WELCOME TO THE 2020 KIPS BAY DECORATOR SHOW HOUSE PALM BEACH Dear Friends, Welcome to the Kips Bay Decorator Show House Palm Beach. Our dreams of creating a Palm Beach Show House have fortunately become a reality, thanks to the enormous efforts of everyone involved these past two years. Now in our third year, the Show House has become a staple of the Palm Beach community and an important source of funds for the Boys & Girls Clubs of Palm Beach and the Kips Bay Boys & Girls Club of New York. The New York Kips Bay Decorator Show House has been the gold standard of show houses for more than four decades and hosting an event in South Florida has provided even more opportunities for the design community to bring forward creative and innovative designs. We are delighted to have secured the participation of a world class group of interior designers, and the home of famed interior designer Lars Bolander, an 8,751-square-foot home located on a double lot at 260 Palmetto Lane, inspired by South African and Dutch architecture. WHAT’S IN THE PIPELINE PALMARO GAMES & CADET ROOMS EXPANSION

ZHANAE “I’m 9 years old and have been in Kips Bay Boys & Girls Club for 4 years.” Zhanae says she “loves Kips Bay because it gives me a place to play games, meet friends, read, and have fun with friends.”

Extensive renovations are set to begin at the Lucile Palmaro Clubhouse to accommodate the rapidly-growing numbers of our six- to nine-year-old Club members. The proposed renovation will reorganize current program space with dramatic upgrades to the Games Room, Cadet Room, Fine Arts Studio and expanded core activity rooms. Significant enhancements include new energy-efficient

skylights in the Games Room, Cadet and Fine Arts areas. The addition of a new Education Room and enlargement of some existing spaces in the Clubhouse will help us maximize space for learning, fine and digital arts, and STEM programming. Improvements to lighting and HVAC will provide a more comfortable environment in the Clubhouse. Renovations will begin in the summer of 2019 and are to be completed by the spring of 2020.

CULINARY LEARNING CENTER A state-of-the-art Learning Kitchen is planned in the Frederic R. & Margaret Coudert Clubhouse to expand our budding culinary arts program. This kitchen will serve as a vessel to educate our young people and their families about healthy eating, including how to shop for and cook healthy food.

It will also provide valuable career-readiness services for teens interested in becoming professional chefs or entering the catering business. Renovations are slated to start in 2020 and will be completed by the end of the calendar year.

Gove Elementary’s Intimidating Pretty Girls step team receives their ﬁrst place trophy

In May, four teams of step dancers from three Boys & Girls Clubs in the Glades area traveled to Jacksonville, FL to compete in the Regional Championship of the 2019 National Step League Competition. Gove Elementary’s talented Intimidating Pretty Girls team performed the original Nightmare step routine and brought home ﬁrst place in the elementary age division. The win qualiﬁed them to proceed to the national championships held at Morehouse College in Atlanta. “We were really impressed with all four of the Boys & Girls Clubs teams from Palm Beach County,” said Adam Barnes, CEO of the National Step League. “Their routines were dynamic and engaging and they displayed the highest level of sportsmanship.” Other Boys & Girls Clubs that competed were Rosenwald Elementary and the Smith & Moore Family Teen Center. “Congratulations to Gove Elementary and all our Glades Area members, as well as the staff, who routinely go above and beyond to support excellence in our Clubs,” said Jaene Miranda, president and CEO of Boys & Girls Clubs of Palm Beach County. 43

The Youth of the Year scholarship is courtesy of the Mary Alice Fortin Foundation headed by Hon. Danielle H. Moore and Hon. Lesly S. Smith.

There’s no lack of leadership when it comes to Kalayah Samuels. She’s a force to be reckoned with at the Florence De George Boys & Girls Club. She takes her job as a Junior Counselor seriously, helping the younger kids while learning from them at the same time. Danielle H. Moore and Lesly S. Smith

“I tell the kids to strive for greatness and that it is OK to stand out,” she said. “Being Youth of the Year means that I have to set an example.”

Kalayah is more than a role model to the kids at the Club. She is also an inspiration to anyone who takes the time to listen to her plans for the future.

“I want to start out in nursing because I want to have hands-on experience, and then move up to hospital administration,” sai d the Palm Beach State College student. “I always felt that being a leader was one of my best traits.” Kalayah’s layah’s journey has not been an easy one. Her mother passed away when she was 4 years old and, thankfully, she and her younger brother were raised by her grandparents. “They are extremely proud of me,” she said. “I look up to my grandparents.” Before re joining Boys & Girls Clubs, Kalayah wasn’t sure she wanted to attend college. But when she went on college tours and campus visits with the Club’s Career Bound 2.0 program, a whole new world unfolded. “Attending nding Boys & Girls Clubs opened my eyes to the fact I could be a college student,” she said. “Winning Youth of the Year meant I could go to college straight from high school. Something I would not have been able to do without the scholarship.” Kalayah h has found college to be a kind of Nirvana. “Everyone is there to further their education,” she said. “They are determined. There is more engagement with the teachers. That is what I like about it. You are around people who have the same goals as you do.” Getting to college was also aided by the support she has received from what she considers to be her second family - the Club - and she plans on staying active in the organization. “My goal is to stay involved in the Boys & Girls Clubs,” she said. “And when I have a family, my kids will deﬁnitely be going to the Club.”

SUMMER SUMMERSTEM STEMPROGRAMMING PROGRAMMINGISISOUT OUTOF OFTHIS THISWORLD WORLD For the summer, 21st Century Community Learning Centers programming at the Club was all about STEM. Learning was based on NASA curriculums and concentrated around astrobiology, the solar system, the sun, and stars. Lessons tied in nicely with all the attention given to the 50th anniversary of the first moon walk and related TV coverage about space travel, which members got the opportunity to experience with a mobile planetarium. STEAM City Kids conducted an on-site “Space Adventure” that made kids feel like they were traveling through space in a spaceship. Members also enjoyed several field trips to the Kennedy Space Center and the South Florida Science Center and Aquarium. Certified teachers, with the help from the Clubs’ Family Service Coordinators, transformed their rooms into a unique experience that included solar systems, space shuttles, Mars rovers, and a host of other items.

KIDS WIN FLORIDA STATE ZERO ROBOTICS COMPETITION Middle school students from Boys & Girls Club of Boca Raton, visited the Kennedy Space Center to represent the state of Florida in the National Zero Robotics Summer Competition. The ﬁve-week STEM curriculum introduces students to computer programming, robotics, and space engineering. It provides hands-on experience in programing SPHERES – Synchronized, Position, Hold, Engage, Reorient, Experimental Satellites. The program culminates in a competition where winning teams get to see their SPHERES operate via a live feed from the ISS, while NASA astronauts provide real-time commentary.

Bamboo Hill A few years ago, current owners Lars Bolander and his wife, Nadine Kalachnikoff, were driving around and came across a dirt road off of Sough Flagler Drive. It immediately caught their interest. The house on the property turned out to be a sales office for the undeveloped land of the former Orchid Society. This was the beginning of what would be a wonderful adventure for the both of them. After much thought, they decided to leave their charming Worth Avenue apartment and bought the two lots which are now referred to as Bamboo Hill. It was their dream to build a house, and with the help of Smith & Moore Architects their plans came to life. Finally, in 2007, they moved their first piece of furniture into the house and have enjoyed every moment that they have lived there.
