2007 ANNUAL REPORT
HAIL THE PIONEER
Hail the pioneer. The one who goes first, opens up possibilities…and encourages youngsters everywhere to dream: “I can be or do anything.” Such a man is William “Willie” O’Ree, the first black player in the history of the National Hockey League. Mr. O’Ree broke in with the Boston Bruins in 1958 and played professional hockey for 21 years. Nearly all of that time he played with very limited vision in one eye due to an injury early in his career. He is now the Director of Youth Development for the NHL. Recently he spoke at Kips Bay to a delighted audience. Introduced by Youth of the Year Qadry Harris (standing next to him), Mr. O’Ree told our youngsters to follow their dreams--no matter what.
MISSION STATEMENT The mission of Kips Bay Boys & Girls Club is to improve and enhance the quality of life for all young people, ages 6 to 18, with special emphasis on those who need us most. Kips Bay Boys & Girls Club exists to assist as many young people as possible to realize and achieve their potential for growth and development, and to attain the skills necessary to live and succeed in a complex world. visit us @ the new www.kipsbay.org
A TIME TO WONDER The milestone of a 75th birthday, a serious illness, the 20th Anniversary of the Annual Day Camp outing at our home in Oyster Bay, and completing 44 years on Kips Bays’ Board of Trustees…all of this since my last President’s Message in the Annual Report.
Above I’m surrounded by six of our young club members and the 4member crew of the Tall Ship Unicorn at the annual outing that Marge and I host on historic Oyster Bay. The young ladies, all from our program at MS 101, were taking part in a week-long maritime education and leadership course called Sisters Under Sail, which is led by an allfemale crew. After lunch it was back out to sea to complete the sail.
It leads a man to reflection on our mission and accomplishments, to gratitude for all of those who annually put together and support this, our signature event, and to wonder at the privilege of touching 14,000 young lives each year. And touch lives we do. Each time a young person walks through the door at any of our ten service venues and is greeted by an adult who cares, we are molding lives. Children and young people in our care are safe and they are supervised. And that’s just the beginning. Time at a Boys & Girls Club is productive time. At "The Bay" youngsters can become computer literate, learn to ice skate at the Bronx’ only ice rink, study dance or drama with professional artists, learn to sail a tall ship, perform community service, learn to swim, expand their horizons at our rustic camp in Harriman State Park, learn entrepreneurial skills at our teen-operated food services, visit colleges, get help with homework, participate in a skills and mentoring clinic with baseball great Roberto Alomar, or engage in any of scores of other constructive activities. By your direct gifts and attendance at our special events, you help to enable the mission of the Kips Bay Boys & Girls Club. I thank you sincerely and assure you that you will continue to have the best and most exciting youth organization anywhere. Best wishes,
Frederic R. Coudert President
YO U R B OY S & G I R L S C L U B I N AC T I O N Dear Friends and Donors: We know that every year so many of you support our mission and activities with gifts, personal encouragement and voluntary efforts. For that, we thank you so much. Your support remains absolutely vital. Because we continue to grow — 14,000 youngsters enrolled at 10 sites in 2007. Because we continue to be largely privately funded — 62% of our budget in 2007. Because we continue to innovate — see our new program immediately below. Here, in pictures and captions, are just a few highlights from Kips Bay Boys & Girls Club from the past year. We hope you are proud to help make all this happen.
Congressman Crowley Awards Kips Bay $310,628 for Nutrition Education and Obesity Prevention
(back row l. to r.) Daniel Quintero, Assemblyman Peter Rivera, Councilwoman Annabel Palma, Councilman Jimmy Vacca, Congressman Joe Crowley. Youngsters operate healthy snack canteen at P.S. 101.
In 2003 the U.S. Surgeon General reported that, in two generations, the percentage of overweight 6- to 17-year-olds had risen from 4% to 15%. Reaching out to the Family Weight Management Program of nearby Jacobi Medical Center, we learned that in 50,000 annual outpatient visits to the general pediatric clinic, 34% of youngsters were overweight. Obesity prevention was on our radar screen and we designed an approach that married encouragement of life-long sports and nutrition education. Our new obesity prevention grant from Congressman Crowley will give a big boost to those efforts.
Our Second Summer at Camp Sebago The summer of 2007 was our second at beautiful Camp Sebago in Harriman State Park. For “City Kids,” many from our homeless shelter and housing project programs, a visit to Camp Sebago means fresh air and hiking, swimming and boating, fishing and exploring the one-room nature museum. Nearly 950 youngsters made day trips to Camp Sebago in 2007, along with 70 others who stayed for 11 days. Unfortunately, this was less residential camping than we had hoped for. The limitation we encountered is needed physical plant repair. If you or your company can help with the renovation, we’d love to meet with you.
Baseball Great Roberto Alomar Conducts Clinic for Winter Instructional Baseball Program
(l. to r. back row) Daniel Quintero, baseball coordinator Robert Casellas, Roberto Alomar. Youngsters are one of twelve 10-and-under teams that participated in 2007/8 Winter Instructional Baseball. A lot of baseball people, ourselves included, think he was the best second baseman of all time. He's Robbie Alomar and he came to Kips Bay to conduct a baseball skills clinic. But his message went well beyond the game he played so well. He told the 90 youngsters in attendance: "Baseball is just a game; education is forever."
K-Company Rocks Shea Stadium on Latin Night
Goya Foods is a generous long-time contributor to the arts at Kips Bay. So when they ask K-Company to wear the Goya logo at an event, we are delighted to comply. Here they are on a beautiful late summer evening at Shea Stadium in September 2007. Of special note is the young lady in the white dress, Jocelyn Quiroz, age 12. In November 2007 at a Boys & Girls Clubs of America event in New York City, Jocelyn became the first winner of the “Major League Baseball Hank Aaron Chasing the Dream Award,” presented by Mr. Aaron himself. A $2,500 scholarship will be used on Jocelyn’s behalf for singing lessons, costumes and transportation — all to help her “chase the dream.”
An Evening at Yankee Stadium Most of us at "The Bay" are major league New York Yankees fans. So our first fundraiser at the legendary "House that Ruth Built" was a special evening indeed. Thanks to the Yankees' Brian Smith and Brian Cashman for greeting our guests in the Great Moments Room prior to the game. Special thanks to major sponsors DavosPharma and the New York Yankees and to contributing sponsors: Bronx Kids Inc; Doonan, Graves & Longoria, James P. Druckman, Carmen Goldberg, GTL Construction, Marvin Hamlisch, Health Plus, K.E.B. Pest Control, Curtis O. Minnis Sr. and Progressive Home Health Service. Daniel Quintero, young fan, Brian Cashman
Rick Goings and Brooke Shields Bring “Chain of Confidence” to Kips Bay Boys & Girls Club
Rick Goings, the dynamic Chairman and CEO of Tupperware Corporation, is also the Chairman of Boys & Girls Clubs of American’s National Board of Governors. On October 29, 2007 we were delighted to welcome Rick and actress Brooke Shields to Kips Bay to promote Tupperware’s “Chain of Confidence” initiative. Goings brought actress and mother-of-two Shields to promote a Chain of Confidence Campaign for women supporting women in achieving their life goals and ambitions.
K-Company Plays the Garden K-Company, Kips Bay’s renowned touring dance and vocal troupe, performed three numbers during half time at a March 2007 New York Knicks game. The young woman in the white dress is Kips Bay alumnus, Asia Nitalino. Asia was a K-Company member during 2001-2003 and is now a member of the New York Knicks’ dance troupe. Asia also scored this year on Channel 11, winning a competition to perform with the group, Pussy Cat Dolls. Asia is one of many for whom K-Company was a springboard to professional success in the performing arts.

Author and donor Ray Negron (left), with Paul H. Ross at 2007 Annual Meeting of Trustees.
Paul H. Ross was named Interim Acting President of Kips Bay Boys & Girls Club in September 2007. Mr. Ross has been a Trustee since 1984, a Vice President since 2005, and is Chair of the Investment Committee. In 2004 Mr. Ross launched a new and distinct Trustee Scholarship Fund with a securities gift of $104,708. The Fund is expended at the rate 20% per year solely for actual scholarships. First Annual Scholarship Recipients Dinner, January 8, 2008
Scholarship recipients, staff members and trustees (above) pose for a group photo at our first annual Scholarship Recipients Dinner. Thanks to extraordinary trustee giving the scholarship program has tripled in the last five years to 68 current participants. Most scholarships are used at academically elite private high schools in the Bronx such as Fordham Prep, Aquinas and Mount St. Michael. NYU, Barnard and Vassar are among the colleges attended. We gratefully acknowledge the outstanding generosity of Paul H. Ross, Frederic R. Coudert, Manuel and Elizabeth Villafa単a, and Mr. & Mrs. Charles H. Mott.
PLANNING FOR THE FUTURE Childhood is more threatened today than it was even ten years ago. With a globalized America and rapid cultural and technological change, it’s important to move forward in a way consistent with the time-honored values that have worked for Kips Bay Boys & Girls Club for four generations, all the while striving toward a contemporary vision. Recently the Board approved a new 5-year plan, which took stock in our organization and concluded that — although we serve 14,000 children and have tripled in size over the past 10 years — much still needs to be accomplished. Strategic Planning for a gift-supported institution is an act of faith: Expressing confidence in the future, putting forth a road map, and providing a springboard to action. So it is with Kips Bay Boys & Girls Club’s Strategic Plan for the years 2008–2013. Over the last 10 years we’ve been able to accomplish most of what we planned. We have been fortunate in that, with all the demands the various communities we are located in require of us, we’ve been able to step up and meet those demands. Highlights over the past 5 years have included: Securing 2 new locations in public housing and a rustic summer camp in Harriman State Park; increasing our registered annual membership to over 14,000 children; tripling enrollment in our scholarship program to prestigious private high schools and colleges; developing innovative entrepreneurial programming; and increasing participation in the rite-of-passage Summer Youth Employment program to a remarkable 1,000 teenagers in summer 2008. These achievements, along with many others, have established Kips Bay Boys & Girls Club as one of the leading youth development organizations in the City, and indeed in the national Boys & Girls Club Movement. But our work is far from over. In this new 5-year plan we will focus on strategic growth, strengthening our Board and private resource development, building our program capacity (especially in the area of outcome measurement), and building and opening our new Clubhouse in the West Bronx. As always, Kips Bay remains committed to the future of our children and the communities we serve. Ultimately, we seek to change lives as well as save lives. To that end we invite all who embrace our mission to join our efforts. On behalf of our children, I thank you.

WON’T YOU GIVE A YOUNG PERSON KIPS BAY BOYS & GIRLS CLUB FOR A YEAR?
Culminating performing arts event, 2007 Summer Day Camp
Kips Bay Boys & Girls Club remains a bargain. Approximately $600 gives Kips Bay Boys & Girls Club to a youngster for one year. We’ll do our best to help them flourish and become leaders as the outstanding young men and women of the scholarship program (see page 14) are doing. All of them perform voluntary work as a condition of their scholarships, and are achieving excellence in their education. At your Boys & Girls Club, we teach giving back every day.
Help us build the future. PLEASE CALL ME Daniel Quintero 718-893-8600 ext. 240 daniel.quintero@kipsbay.org
