Flowers in Forest-Llewellyn Cemetery Spring is here, and we want to remind you of the Forest-Llewellyn Cemetery Flower Policy. All artificial flowers, wreaths on a stand, and headstone sprays that have been placed throughout the winter must be removed by April 1, 2018. You are welcome to place new headstone sprays, fresh cut flowers, and artificial flowers contained in a permanent vase, attached to the marker, as they are permitted year-round. However, they are subject to removal by City staff when they become soiled, weathered, or displaced by a storm. Holiday flowers placed on a grave for Memorial Day or Independence Day are encouraged, but must be removed two weeks after each holiday, or they will be removed by City staff. Prohibited decorations include, but are not limited to, solar lights, shepherd hooks of any size, statues, figurines, vases, pottery, ceramics, wind chimes, decorative rocks, wood chips, landscape timbers, furniture, Christmas trees, ornaments, trinkets, adornments, borders, flag poles, and banners. For more information, contact the City Clerk at 660.627.1225.

Be Sewer Smart! You can help prevent sewer blockages! Here is a list of eleven items you should NEVER flush down your toilet: 1. Bathroom Wipes: These wipes create clogs and backups in sewer systems. 2. Condoms: Latex prophylactics are like kryptonite to sewage treatment plants. 3. Cotton Balls & Swabs: They gather together, causing massive blockages. 4. Prescription Medications: These drugs destroy bacteria, contaminate groundwater supplies, and can have terrible effects on wildlife downstream. 5. Paper Towels: These are NOT designed to break down in water like toilet paper. 6. Cigarette Butts: They’re full of incredibly toxic chemicals. 7. Band-Aids: These are made from non-biodegradable plastic. 8. Dental Floss: Despite feeling like string, dental floss is not biodegradable. 9. Fats, Oil, and Grease: Cooking fats may be liquid when it’s hot, but as soon as this grease hits the drain, it cools and congeals, becoming pipe-clogging wax. 10. Cat Litter: Cat litter is an absorptive substance and can clog pipes. 11. Disposable Diapers: Diapers are made from toxic plastic which is designed to expand when it comes in contact with water. 12. Sanitary Napkins and Tampons: Cotton snags easily, and if your home’s plumbing pipes have any cracks or root infiltration, the cotton can quickly get caught in the line.

Did you know that a backflow prevention device is used to protect potable water supplies from contamination or pollution due to backflow in water supply systems? Water is normally maintained at a significant pressure to enable water to flow in your household from the tap, shower, etc. Your sewer can also have a backflow preventer: a device that will allow water and other materials that back-up to escape from the cleanout rather than flow into your home. These simple devices can prevent costly damage to your property!
