Offices Closed for Holidays City Council Filing Opens December 12 Have you ever considered running for City Council? Filing for City Council candidates begins Friday, December 12, 2017, at 8:00 am and continues through Tuesday, January 16, 2018, at 5:00 pm. You may file in the City Clerk’s office at City Hall, 201 S. Franklin St., during regular business hours, Monday through Friday, 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, except for designated holidays. The Municipal Election for City Council will be held on Tuesday, April 3, 2018. To qualify, you must be 21 years of age prior to taking office; a US citizen; a resident of Kirksville for one year preceding the election; a registered voter; and not been found, or pled, guilty to a felony under state and federal laws. Prior to filing, each person must complete an “Affidavit” with the Missouri Department of Revenue affirming that all state income taxes, personal property, and real property taxes on the place of residence have been paid. All City offices, including the Aquatic Center, will be closed on Friday, December 22, through Monday, December 25, 2017, in observance of Christmas. All City offices will reopen Tuesday, December 26, 2017, for regular business hours! All City offices, including the Aquatic Center, will also be closed Monday, January 1, 2018, in observance of New Year’s Day. We apologize for any inconvenience these closures may cause, and wish you and yours a very happy holiday season!

The City of Kirksville, Kirksville Downtown Improvement Committee (KDIC), and the Kirksville Office of Tourism want to remind you that Santa Claus will be coming to Downtown Kirksville beginning Saturday, December 2, 2017! Following the Kirksville Kiwanis Christmas Parade at 5:00 pm on December 2, 2017, Santa will welcome children to his house on the Second Floor of the Adair County Courthouse from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm! Santa will return to the Courthouse on December 9, 16, and 23, 2017, from 10:00 am to 12:00 pm! Please note: the Courthouse is accessible to all, regardless of ability! Holiday activities and train rides will be available during every visit! This holiday season, come see Santa and his elves in Downtown Kirksville!
Fire Safety Tips for the Holidays! The holidays are a time for families and friends to gather together, but that also means a greater risk for fire. Following a few simple tips will help ensure a happy and fire-safe holiday season. For Holiday Decorating:

Choose holiday decorations that are flame resistant or flame retardant.

12/13—P&Z Meeting, 6:30 pm Replace any string of holiday lights with worn or broken cords or loose bulb connections. Be 12/18—Council Meeting, 6:00 pm sure to read the manufacturer’s instructions for the number of light strands to connect.
Use clips, not nails, to hang holiday lights so the cords do not get damaged.

Have a covered metal container ready to dispose cooled ashes. The ash container should be kept at least 10 feet from the home and any nearby buildings. Use only portable space heaters with an automatic shutoff, and plug electric heaters directly into a wall outlet, never an extension cord.

Public Christmas Tree Drop-Off! Are you wondering what to do with your old Christmas tree? The City will offer a free Christmas tree drop-off from December 26, 2017, through January 5, 2018! Christmas trees may be dropped off within the orange fenced-in area in the northeast corner of the Missouri Street and Main Street public parking lot. All decorations, including ornaments, lights, tinsel, etc., must be removed prior to drop-off. We appreciate your cooperation!
