Tips for Heart Health Month Here are some tips if you suspect someone is having a heart attack:

Glass recycling tote: available at City Hall during regular business hours!

Glass Recycling Program Update! Due to the positive response to the City’s new Glass Recycling Program, Advanced Disposal (the City’s waste services provider) is extending glass recycling pickup to include the first Tuesday of each month for the next two months! As usual, please have your glass recycling totes set curbside on the first Monday of each month. However, if your glass tote hasn’t been emptied by the end of the day Monday, please leave your tote curbside, and it will be emptied on Tuesday. This procedure will be in place for the months of February and March, 2017. Then, beginning in April 2017, glass recycling pickup day will resume its regular schedule of only the first Monday of each month. Thank you for recycling your glass!

Ensure the scene is safe. Try to wake the person. Check for a pulse.

Call 911. Find an AED (if possible).

Begin CPR.

Apply the AED ASAP (if possible) and follow the AED prompts.

Continue CPR, following the AED prompts, until EMS arrives.

As a reminder, glass should be placed directly into the tote. Glass placed inside a plastic bag cannot be picked up. For more information, contact Codes & Planning at 660.627.1272.

Mark your calendar for the Municipal Election on Tuesday, April 4, 2017! Three candidates have filed for two positions on the City Council: Rick Steele (incumbent), Jerry Mills (incumbent), and Kevin A. Alm. Council terms are for three years. Following the election, the Council will hold a special meeting to select the Mayor and the Mayor Pro Tem. Also on the ballot is a sales tax question for a one-half of one percent (1/2 of 1%) sales tax for the funding of City Parks and Recreation, that will last for fifteen years. If approved, the funds will be used solely to construct, maintain, improve, and manage parks, trails, playgrounds, park parking lots, bathrooms, aquatic facilities, cemetery, and other natural lands and facilities used for recreational purposes.

City ordinance requires either the tenant or owner of a  02/20—City Offices Closed property to remove snow and ice from the sidewalk within 24 hours of the end of a snow event. More and more people are using the sidewalks for exercise, recreation, and going to and from work or school. Please be considerate of your fellow citizens and ensure your sidewalks are clear! Preparation is key: be sure to have a good snow shovel and some ice melt handy. We thank you for your cooperation, and we’re sure your neighbors will thank you as well! Winter Weather Driving Tips Drivers have grappled with their fair share of ice this winter. Here are a few tips to avoid accidents while driving in this winter weather: 

Slow down! Your souped-up, four-wheel drive may help you go, but it doesn’t help you stop.

Avoid ice! When ice starts accumulating, stay home if at all possible: it’s not worth the risk!

De-ice your windshield before driving! Get it all, not just a spot the size of a softball.

Don’t idle your car in the garage! Start it up, back it out, and let it warm up in the driveway.

Always be prepared! Keep a snow shovel, kitty litter or sandbags, jumper cables, and an extra blanket or two in your car. Even if you don’t use them, you may come across someone who will.

Tips for Being Safe on the Ice As our lakes and ponds freeze over, many will venture onto the ice for recreation. Here are a few tips to stay safe: 

Confirm ice thickness by drilling a hole five (5) feet from the edge of the ice.

Do not venture onto ice that is less than four (4) inches thick.

Wear a life jacket, regardless of ice thickness, and never go out on the ice alone.

If you are with a group, avoid standing together. Spread out.

Don’t attempt to rescue pets or other animals that fall through the ice; you can become a victim too!
