Pets Take More Than Food & Water Caring for your pets is not only important for their health and wellbeing; it’s important to your neighbors and the community. Providing your pets with nutritious food, adequate water, proper air, shelter, exercise, and veterinary care is not only the humane thing to do: it’s the law. Not properly caring for your pets is not only annoying for your neighbors: it may also be a violation of City ordinance. Also, don’t forget to license your pets! A license is free of charge and is required for any animal four months of age or older. A license is good for one year and can be obtained at the Police Station, located at 119 E. McPherson St. For all animal ordinances, please visit the following link: www.kirksvillecity.com/municipalcode, and, after clicking “Municipal Code”, select “Chapter 5—ANIMALS AND FOWL”. Remember: pets take more than food and water! For more information, contact the Police Department at 660.785.6945.

Operational fire hydrants are important in the event of an emergency, which is why the Fire Department flows fire hydrants! The Fire Department is currently flowing water from fire hydrants to ensure they are operational. This process is conducted annually. If a hydrant is discovered to be in need of repair, it is tagged and the repair is made to ensure the hydrant is fully operational. For more information, contact the Fire Department at 660.665.3734.

Backflow Prevention Devices Does your home have a backflow prevention device? Water is normally maintained at a significant pressure to enable water to flow in your household from the tap, shower, etc. However, if that changes, a backflow prevention device will protect your water system from contamination. You can also purchase a backflow prevention device for your sewer. In the event of a sewer backup, this device will allow water and other materials to escape from the cleanout rather than flow into your home. This simple device can prevent both costly damage and a mess for everyone in your home. For more information, contact the Public Works Department at 660.627.1291.
