Candidates’ Forum Goes Virtual

The City’s Spring Brush and Limb Pick-Up is scheduled for April 5 through 9, 2021!

The Kirksville Area Chamber of Commerce’s annual Candidates’ Forum has gone virtual! The Chamber will host the Candidates’ Forum – for City Council and Board of Education candidates – via Zoom on Tuesday, March 16, 2021, for Chamber members only. The recording of the Candidates’ Forum will then be made publicly available beginning March 17, 2021, on the City of Kirksville’s YouTube channel at www.youtube.com/kirksvillecity.

City crews will begin picking up tree limbs and large brush on Monday, April 5, 2021.

Then, on Tuesday, April 6, 2021, citizens registered to vote will have the opportunity to select one individual for the City Council. The candidates for City Council, in the order they will appear on the ballot, are: Kevin A. Alm, Kabir Bansal, John Gardner, and Dana Danny McDowell.

Help beautify our community and get your lawn ready for spring and summer! For more information, contact the Public Works Department at 660.627.1291.

Although the work is expected to take the entire week, to guarantee pick-up, your brush must be placed curbside by 7:00 am, Monday, April 5, 2021.

For more information on the Candidates’ Forum, contact the Chamber at 660.665.3766. For more information on the Municipal Election, contact the City Clerk at 660.627.1225.

Daylight Savings Time is almost here! On Sunday, March 14, 2021, at 2:00 am, be sure to move your clock forward one hour to 3:00 am. When you do, be sure to also change the batteries in your smoke alarms! We would like to remind you that a smoke alarm with a dead or missing battery is the same as having no smoke alarm at all! Here are some tips to help ensure your smoke alarm protects you, your family, and your home: 

Test your smoke alarm every month.

Plant a Tree This Spring! The City has received a Tree Resource Improvement and Maintenance (TRIM) grant from the Missouri Department of Conservation to help purchase and plant forty-nine new trees throughout the City’s park system! The trees will be planted this April, and a local Arbor Day planting event is being planned for Friday, April 30, 2021. If YOU are interested in planting a new tree, mid-March to May is the perfect time. Be sure to select a tree that is appropriate for both our local climate and your property. Additionally, if planting in the City’s right-of-way, review the City’s rules for tree species, spacing, and distance from the curb, sidewalk, street corners, and fire hydrants by visiting www.kirksvillecity.com/ municipalcode. Then, before you dig, call 1.800.DIG.RITE to ensure your location is safe. After your new tree is planted, water it often. Remember to add three inches of mulch around the tree in the shape of a donut. Some trees may even need to be staked for their first year. For additional tips on planting a new tree on your property, visit mdc.mo.gov/trees-plants/tree-care. For more information, contact the Parks and Recreation Department at 660.627.1485.

Door-to-door activity will likely increase as the weather improves.
