Meet Your 2018-2019 City Council On Monday, April 9, 2018, City Council member Phillip Biston was sworn into office for his second term. Here’s the City’s rule as it relates to grass: it is every property owner’s responsibility to maintain their property, and that includes mowing grass. City Code requires that grass and weeds not exceed 8 inches. Additionally, don’t forget that you also need to maintain your half of the alley behind your property! To everyone who maintains their property, thank you: we appreciate your hard work! If you see a property not in compliance, please let us know by using the Citizen Service Request tool on the City website at www.kirksvillecity.com/submit-service-request. We will reach out to the occupants and / or property owner. These individuals will receive a notice of violation that includes a compliance date. For more information, contact the Codes Department at 660.627.1272.
Founders Day 2019! You are invited to join us in honoring the men and women who made Kirksville what it is today during the City’s annual Founders Day ceremony! Organized by the City of Kirksville’s Friends of Forest-Llewellyn Cemetery, the ceremony will be held Sunday, May 27, 2018, at 2:00 pm in Forest-Llewellyn Cemetery. The cemetery is located one block west of the downtown square, at the west end of Harrison Street. The American Legion Post 20 will be joined by John H. McNeil Camp No. 62, Sons of Union Veterans, for a ceremony, gun salute, and cannon firing, to honor those veterans buried in Forest-Llewellyn Cemetery. Additionally, the Friends of Forest-Llewellyn Cemetery Committee will be dedicating a gravestone for John T. Angevine, as part of the event. Angevine, who died in 1923, was a local businessman and community leader, who had no descendants and, therefore, was buried without a gravestone of his own, although his family plot is marked by the famous “weeping woman” statue near the entrance to Forest-Llewellyn Cemetery. For more information, contact Economic and Community Development at 660.627.1224.
Pets Take More Than Food and Water Caring for your pets is not only important for their health and wellbeing; it’s important to your neighbors and the community. Providing your pets with nutritious food, adequate water, proper air, shelter, exercise, and veterinary care is the responsible thing to do. Not properly caring for your pets is not only harmful for your pets and annoying to your neighbors: it may also be a violation of City ordinance.
