Offices Closed for Holidays In observance of Veterans Day, all City Offices, including the Aquatic Center, will be closed on Friday, November 10, 2017.

Thanksgiving Safety Tips! Our Fire Department would like to remind you to stay safe this year while you prepare your Thanksgiving feast! 

Stay in the home when cooking your turkey, and check on it frequently.

Keep children away from the stove; your stove will be hot!

Keep the floor clear of hazards so you don’t trip over kids, toys, bags, etc.

Keep knives, matches, and utility lighters out of the reach of children.

Be sure electric cords are not dangling off the counter within reach of a child.

Make sure to test your smoke alarms to ensure they are working.

In observance of Thanksgiving, all City Offices will be closed on Thursday, November 23 and Friday, November 24, 2017. The Aquatic Center will be closed Thursday, November 24, through Saturday, November 25, 2017. All City offices will reopen Monday, November 27, 2017, for regular business hours! We wish everyone a Happy Thanksgiving!

Winterizing Your Water Meter

Now is the time to winterize your water meter! If your water meter is prone to freezing, you should take the following precautions to prevent the meter from freezing and breaking:

Make sure you have a tight-fitting lid on your meter pit.

Fill the meter pit with fiberglass insulation, especially if your lid doesn’t fit well.

Place a blanket or straw bale on top of the lid for insulation.

Following these simple steps will help protect your water meter. As a reminder, if your meter freezes, the meter replacement and/or repair is the responsibility of the tenant/owner. For more information, contact the Finance Department at 660.627.1251.


Help Maintain Our Cemetery! As a community, we want to respect and preserve the burials at Forest-Llewellyn Cemetery. To accomplish this, we need the cooperation of loved ones who decorate the graves and add to the beauty of the cemetery. Everyone who visits Forest-Llewellyn Cemetery is asked to follow the rules established by the City Council for placement of flowers and decorations.

Important Dates From November 1 to April 1 of each year, artificial flowers and wreaths on a stand are permitted on gravesites, but are subject to removal by City maintenance crews when they become soiled,  11/6—Council Meeting, 6:00 pm weathered, or displaced by a storm event. Headstone sprays, as well as artificial and fresh  11/7—LPRC Meeting, 12:00 pm flowers in a permanent vase attached to the marker, are permitted year-round.  11/8—P&Z Meeting, 6:30 pm Prohibited decorations include, but are not limited to: solar lights, shepherd hooks of any size, statues, figurines, vases, pottery, ceramics, wind chimes, decorative rocks, wood chips, landscape  11/10—Veterans Day, Offices Closed timbers, furniture, Christmas trees, ornaments, trinkets, adornments, borders, flag poles, and  11/13—Council Study Session, 6:00 pm banners. Santa to Visit Downtown Kirksville!

The City of Kirksville, Kirksville Downtown Improvement Committee (KDIC), and the Kirksville Office of Tourism are excited to announce that Santa Claus will be coming to Downtown Kirksville beginning Saturday, December 2, 2017! Back by popular demand, Parks and Recreation’s “Breakfast with Santa” will be held the morning of December 2, 2017, at Maxwell’s in Downtown Kirksville! Tickets will be on sale from November 1 through December 1, 2017, online at parks.kirksvillecity.com, or at the Aquatic Center during regular hours! Tickets are $10 for ages 5 and up, and children 4 and under are free! Later that day, Santa will return to the Downtown as part of the Kirksville Kiwanis Christmas Parade at 5:00 pm! The parade will take place on Franklin Street, between Missouri and Jefferson Streets. Following the parade, Santa will welcome children to his house on the Second Floor of the Adair County Courthouse from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm! Santa will return to the Courthouse on December 9, 16, and 23, 2017, from 10:00 am to 12:00 pm! Please note: the Courthouse is accessible to all, regardless of ability! Holiday activities and train rides will be available during every visit!
