Bat Tests Positive for Rabies Over one month ago, a bat tested positive for rabies in Kirksville. Since that time, twenty-seven bats have been tested, and none have tested positive for rabies. Due to the one positive case, however, the City asks you to take the following precautions.

Call your Animal Control Officer at 660.665.5621 to report a bat in your living space. Do not touch, hit, or destroy the bat, and do not try and remove it from your home. Call the Adair County Health Department at 660.665.8491 to report any exposure to a bat and determine if preventive treatment is needed. This includes waking to a bat in your room. Do not be alarmed if you see a bat outdoors. There are many benefits to having bats outside your home, including their ability to eat 1,000 mosquitoes an hour each night!

Don’t forget: the City’s Fall Brush and Limb Pick Up is scheduled for October 1 to 5, 2018! The Public Works Department’s Street Maintenance Division will begin picking up tree limbs and large brush on Monday, October 1, 2018. To guarantee pick up, your brush must be placed curbside by 7:00 am, Monday, October 1, 2018! This includes limbs that are no longer than 10 feet in length, and / or no wider than 18 inches in diameter. For more information, contact the Public Works Department at 660.627.1291.

For more information, contact the Police Department at 660.785.6945.

Be aware: fire can happen anywhere. That’s why this year’s Fire Prevention Week theme, “Look. Listen. Learn.” is so important!

“LOOK” for places fire could start. Take a good look around your home. Identify potential fire hazards and take care of them. “LISTEN” for the sound of the smoke alarm. You could have only minutes to escape safely once the smoke alarm sounds. “LEARN” two ways out of every room and make sure all doors and windows leading outside open easily and are free of clutter. Fire Prevention Week is October 7 to 13, 2018! Visit www.firepreventionweek.org for fire safety tips and fun activities! For more information, contact the Fire Department at 660.665.3734!
