PROBLEM STATEMENT. The purpose of this project is to design a boutique hotel for Nádvorí, an American hotel and resort company that focuses on minimizing the human carbon footprint. Nádvorí, is centered around green-living and follows LEED building standards in all of their locations as they believe that hospitality design can serve as a catalyst for change in the future of stainability. The site for the hotel is located in Prague, Czech Republic, in an existing building, 4 stories high and roughly 20,000 square feet. Prague is ranked among the world’s 10 most sustainable cities offering “a high quality of life for its citizens, good eco-friendly factors for the environment, and solid economic health for reaching long term goals,” (Arcadis 2016). The design will focus on the use of sustainable materials and altering the existing structure to maximize energy efficiency.

03

THESIS STATEMENT. Sustainable design in the hospitality sector will improve quality of life during the duration of your stay, and will encourage visitors to continue living a green-lifestyle upon their return home. Due to its international location and diversity of visitors, this will help spread world wide and become a catalyst for a green future.

INSPIRATION IMAGES.

The design for the hotel draws inspiration from the courtyards hidden amongst Prague architecture. The space uses a color and material palette inspired by the “courtyard feel” and features a five story atrium that functions as a courtyard space with casual dining, lounge space and a functional water feature.

CONCEPT STATEMENT. Nádvorí, a boutique hotel in Prague, Czech Republic, uses sustainable design to improve quality of life for the duration of your stay and aims to encourage visitors to continue living a green-lifestyle upon their return home. The design for the hotel draws inspiration from the urban planning of Prague, mimicking the courtyards hidden amongst the historic architecture. These courtyards provide opportunity for green space to exist within the dense city scape. The design draws from the defining features of a courtyard: enclosed on four sides, open to the sky, exposed historic architecture, water feature, vegetation and hidden entrances. By creating a courtyard within the hotel, it allows plant life to exist indoors and provides opportunity to teach visitors about the importance of sustainability in their every day lives. Within the courtyard, a water feature encompasses both aesthetics and functionality, serving as a rainwater catchment and purification system and an interactive installation. By showing beauty in the processes of sustainability, I hope to inspire visitors to live sustainable lifestyles.
