The Hinge

KIRYAT GAT’S URBAN CORE Gradient THE GRADIENT OFFERS OPPORTUNITIES FOR CREATING PERMEABILITY AND CROSSING OF THE RAILROAD TRACKS. EXISTING BOTH ADJACENT TO AND SPANNING THE TRACKS, THIS TEMPORAL MECHANISM CAN EXPAND AND CONTRACTS ACROSS SPACE.

Layered Connectivity

Strategic Plan THE STRATEGIC PLAN FOR THE HINGE CENTERS ON THE CONCEPT OF CROSSING GRADIENTS ON SEVERAL DIFFERENT SCALES. OUR GOAL IS TO CREATE NEW TENSIONS AND CAPITALIZE ON EXISTING ONES ALONG THE MAIN CORE CONNECTOR AND ACROSS THE RAILROAD TRACKS, PULLING RESIDENTS AND WORKERS IN BOTH DIRECTIONS. THE INTENSITY OF USE WILL VARY BY GRADIENT, FURTHER RELIEVING EDGES BY ALLOWING FOR DISSOLVING AND SOFTENING OF BARRIERS. SDEROT LAKISH SERVES AS A CORE CONNECTOR INTERSECTING THE TRAIN TRACKS AND INCREASING PERMEABILITY BETWEEN THE CITY CENTER AND THE INDUSTRIAL ZONE. THIS WILL ALLOW FOR TRANSIT-ORIENTED DEVELOPMENT IN AND AROUND THE HINGE THAT WILL BE AT ITS MOST INTENSE AT THE TRAIN STATION AND CONTINUING TO OTHER ANCHORS OF THE MUNICIPAL CORE. THIS WILL LEAD TO INCREASES IN ACTIVITY, USE, DEVELOPMENT, DENSITY, AND ECONOMY. IN ADDITION TO THE MAIN CONNECTION ACROSS THE TRACKS, THE STRATEGIC PLAN CAPITALIZES ON THE RELATIVE INFREQUENCY OF TRAIN PASSAGE BY ALLOWING FOR MICRO-PERMEATIONS TO FURTHER STITCH THE URBAN FABRIC ON BOTH SIDES OF THE TRACKS. 50 M FIXED ROUTE BUS PEDESTRIAN WADI NETWORK ON-DEMAND TRAIN

THE MASTER PLAN IS A MANIFESTATION OF DEVELOPMENT STRATEGIES INTO AREAS OVER VARIOUS INTENSITIES AND GRADIENTS. THE ROAD AND TRAIN SERVE AS CONNECTOR LINES THAT INTERSECT AND FEED INTO AN INTEGRATED NETWORK. PEDESTRIAN NETWORKS CONTAINED WITHIN THE GRADIENTS FURTHER FEED INTO AND OUT OF AREAS OF INTENSITY. THE CORE CONNECTOR WILL GUIDE GROWTH, DEVELOPMENT, AND INFILL TO ACTIVATE THE MIXED USE PROCESSION OF RESIDENTIAL, MUNICIPAL, COMMERCIAL, AND INDUSTRIAL.

FIXED-ROUTE BUS - THE CONVERGENCE OF MULTIPLE ROUTES SUPPORTS A HIGHER INTENSITY OF ACTIVITY RAIL - A MULTIMODAL BUS/RAIL NODE ACTIVATES THE BRIDGE AND INCREASES ACCESSIBILITY PEDESTRIAN NETWORK - BOUNDARIES ARE DISSOLVED ACROSS THE CITY, FURTHERING THE EXISTING CAR-FREE MOBILITY WADI NETWORK - A SERIES OF SPACES REESTABLISHES THE WADI AS AN ENVIRONMENTAL AND SOCIAL ASSET. The Hinge

KIRYAT GAT’S URBAN CORE Inventory The Hinge is the piece of land that stiches together what are presently the main section of the city and the industrial district. Currently these zones are stratified with hard edges and abrupt barriers. The Hinge is also the location of the Kiryat Gat train station. The crossing is impermeable from within the Hinge, and the train tracks serve to reinforce the lack of connectivity in this area. UNPAVED SPACE PARK/PUBLIC GARDEN

Anchoring Paradigm

We propose anchoring new development in the Hinge by focusing on the municipal core and train station, using the tension between the strengths of the main city and the industrial zone. This connection will eventually lead to the development of secondary connections and infill.

Truncated Networks Kiryat Gat suffers from a lack of network permeability. What could be a vibrant, busy urban core suffers from stratified uses, separate zones, and a lack of connectivity, due to existing truncated networks. By focusing on important features of the urban fabric such as transit nodes, municipal buildings, natural systems, and generators of economic activity, Kiryat Gat can create better point-topoint connectivity, bridge current physical divisions, and revitalize the center of the city.
