Flutterings of Spring
A dreamy, romantic, Edwardian setting and the delicate hues of Spring.
Beautifully curated Edwardian details, married with the floral romance of spring, is brought together here to inspire a reception setting perfect for an elegant approach to your day.
8
Life’s simple pleasure of a scented flower was beautifully curated into these delicate arrangements by Darling & Green. Layers of soft, almost translucent tones, of the heavily scented Ziva Paperwhites, mixed with White Lilac Flower, Queen White Hellebores, and Double Avante-Garde Tulips, delightful Spring chic. Blue and white china is so easy to source from car boot sales or second hand shops. Here we have layered a beautiful selection with our own DIY printed fabric tablecloth and napkin (see page 23), accompanied with pretty bespoke stationery from Ruby Shoes Wedding. Hand cut paper butterflies add that extra touch of delicate detailing.
9
“My heart is, and always will be, yours” Jane Austen, Sense and Sensibility Floral filled milk jugs and stone pots add perfect detailing, especially if you group a couple together. White-on-white petals are always a statement of beauty..
life’s simple pleasures.. Greet your guests with a touch of glamour with a refreshing reception drink of ‘gin fizz’ decorated with delicate viola petals. Pretty wraps of scented soap make perfect favours for your guests and .will add an amazing scent to your reception room. Floral tones for the ladies, Lemon Verbena for the gentlemen. Here we have wrapped a selection in our own printed white muslin. and parcel tied with linen thread.
Stand small vases on plates to add extra layers of detail, pot garden birds are a great way to hide little elements of spring We love this table number from Ruby Shoes Wedding tucked away under a floral canape.

Floral Love Let your guests enjoy the sunshine inspired by our romantic English country garden setting..
As Inviting As A Summer’s Day New and vintage fabrics are a perfect alternative to a plain tablecloth, and very easy to make yourself with a sewing machine or hand stitched. Add frills or lace borders for the top table for that extra layering of detail. Don’t be shy, mix colours and varied scales of floral prints such as blousy blooms with smaller scale ditsy prints.
Bring the happiness of the garden inside using beautiful displays of scented florals. Florists Darling & Green have used the fragrant selection of Darcey & Edith, Yves Piaget and Jardinier roses from David Austin mixed with a sprinkle of scented Jasmine. We have used patterned vases to sit alongside jam jars, that have been decorated with fabric ribbon to add a special hand-made touch to the table decor (see our DIY project on page 25) Pinned to the front of the table is this rather cheery ‘love’ bunting from The Linen Garden. Our bride wears a beautifully romantic floral lace dress from Bex Brides and carries a scented bouquet as her perfume for the day.

all that summer brings Refreshments of fruit punch and cordials are perfect reception drinks for your guests on a warm summer’s day and they also add a little splash of colour to the table too. Mix the colours of Summer with this pretty floral garden stationery from Ruby Shoes Wedding, it is such a treat and looks perfect mixed with vintage floral china plates; beautiful floral layering for an afternoon garden party.
Please Be Seated Pretty statement chairs can be a little luxury detailing for your day. Lightweight muslin is a great inexpensive way to decorate a chair. We love how the light works with the fabric and shows the silhouette of the spindles; all beautifully decorated with scented roses and pretty ribbons from Darling & Green
14
The smallest of details can add a little visual conversation to the table such as this ‘lovers and a picnic’ coffee pot used as a vase. Take days out at weekends to scout around car boot sales to find unusual treasures for your day.

Autumn Gatherings home-spun, hand-made home-baked and keepsakes
faux flowers - real love
The interest and indulgence in all that is hand-made, home-baked, re-claimed and re-treasured is still a key element in life-style and wedding trends. From DIY projects to commissioning a designer-maker to create something special for your day, here we embrace just that through inspiring Autumn tones.
16
Here is hand-made at its finest.. Individually crafted petals form these beautiful bespoke hand stitched bouquets and boutonnières from Cheryl-Ann Taylor. Added details of seed heads and feathers make this a beautiful Autumnal keepsake that you can treasure for many years displayed in your little nest of a home.
17
homely details SWEET SENTIMENTS Home-baked rustic treats for desserts are perfect for the more home-spun wedding. Danish apple cake, deep filled jam tarts decorated with chopped berries, sprinklings of brown sugar all served just slightly warmed from the oven. TWEED & TEXTURE We are smitten with this menu from Ruby Shoes Wedding.... Textures of tweed and cloth in rich palettes are certainly a warming detail to the colder seasons PLEASE SNUGGLE After the summer months we still crave to sit out on an early Autumnal evening. Nurture your guests with a cosy collection of blankets to snuggle up close

“autumn...
the year’s last,
loveliest smile.”
William Cullent Bryant It is great fun to search for those personal details that will help evoke a ‘carefully curated’ look to your day. Here we have used a charming floral backdrop of antique sari’s as tablecloths from ebay, floral pottery from car boot finds and sawn cuts of wood; all fabulous rustic treasures. Nail art is a great craft that you can do together or as a family project. Here we have used reclaimed blocks of wood to create threaded table numbers. You can use varied coloured/ types of threads too for each number. Follow our DIY project on page 26 to create these hand-made alternatives to decorate your table.

A BotanicaL WINTER “The warm welcoming tones of a fauna wrapped winter, the glistening of crystal and the glow of metallics
A wintry gathering of shimmering textures, mirrored tones of glass, crystal and copper, ferns and potted succulents bring a crisp, clean, classic warmth to the colder season Smoked glass vessels filled with grand Nephrolepis fern is paired with the soft, flowing Maiden Hair fern to give contrast, balance and texture designed by foliage fanciers Darling & Green. Sequined cloths display glittering spaces as branches of White Jasmine spread its heady scent as it lays relaxed between each table setting. A beautiful organic arrangement. A relaxed seating plan from Ruby Shoes Wedding in tones of cotton whites and twine pinned washing lines, sits perfectly within this natural setting. Snipped sprigs and miniature branches of foliage hang from guilded pegs to add that extra depth of decoration.

Rachael & Luke Grinkle Park
Rachel & Luke Brough held their ceremony and reception at Grinkle Park Hotel, North Yorkshire. They envisaged a lovely outdoor summers day with a really good party feel for a big family wedding. Grinkle Park Hotel – Excellent food and service. The General Manager, Richard Ibbott, was the most enthusiastic and dedicated person we met on our venue tour. Richard made everything run smoothly with little stress on us. We chose Jen Hart to be our photographer because of her ability to take really nice candid shots of people having fun. Great results! Two dresses. One day, one evening. The Day dress was a white lace full length -
32
fitted, slightly vintage. The Evening dress picked for dancing inspired by the Guns n Roses, November Rain video. Shorter at the front than at the back, great for dancing twirls. My bouquet was made by my maid of honour. Purple themed brooch bouquet with paper flowers made from a book by my favourite author. Can you describe a memorable moment from the day?
Our first dance. We had been attending Ceroc dancing classes in the run up to the wedding so we were able to put on an impressive show for guests who didn’t know we’d been practicing. A word from the Groom I stayed overnight at my parents’ house and got up to a cooked breakfast with the groomsmen, friends and family. I decided to arrive early at the venue to greet guests and have a little Dutch courage before the ceremony. At one point I sat at the top table feeling genuinely happy, carefree and content with life. How did you prepare for the speeches? Methodically! I made sure everyone was thanked. I also made cue cards and practiced a few times on my own to get the timings right. 3 Words to describe your wedding day Happy, sunny, party

Emma & Scott
So after night after night of going to bed early with the Ipad to search the internet (Scott was working offshore) I ended up on the American websites, in particular Nordstrom and I found the exact shoes I was looking for, but they were last season’s shoes! I hunted on every single website for the shoes until I managed to track down a store in the states that went out of their way to locate them for me.
Middleton Lodge
Our close friends had arranged for us to meet at their wedding in 2005, but as Scott walked in, I walked out (I had food poisoning) so we were never introduced. A few days later, we started talking on Match.com and we had our first date on the 1st of October 2005.
“I know everyone says this, but take 5 minutes to take some time out. I remember running back up to our bedroom to reapply my lipstick and looking in the mirror, grinning and saying ‘oh god, im married’ and then I did a little dance. I had spent months planning this day and it goes so so fast.”
I loved the party scene in Baz Lhurmans Great Gatsby and remarked to my friend that one day, I’d love to throw a party like that. That one day became our wedding day; it was all about the party! We wanted a very relaxed and informal wedding. As neither of us are religious, we didn’t want a long ceremony, readings or songs. We didn’t think our boys would sit still long enough either. My dad passed away a few years ago and I asked one of my younger brothers to walk me down the aisle. We had a bet who would cry first, I won, he did! Never mind the dress...it was all about the shoes!
“From waking at 6.30 and not going to bed until 4.30! I would happily do it all again and we have had so many people telling us that it was the best wedding they had ever been to!”
They
were gold, Christian Louboutin’s – Volpi. I knew that I didn’t want typical bridal shoes as I wanted to be able to wear them again after the wedding. Scott and I had been to Leeds shopping and I tried on a pair of Jimmy Choos but found the heels too unstable and I’d also tried on a pair of glittery Miu Miu shoes....but neither of them were ‘The Ones.’
34
The Photographer: Sally Thurrell – what can I say about Sally.... Apart from the fact that she is amazing. You wouldn’t think that Sally was a photographer as she is so personable, you would think she was a guest at the wedding. Sally’s style is so laid back and informal and her work is perfection! Anyone that offers to give my mum her own earring-back when Mum had lost hers is wonderful in my eyes – that’s a lovely gesture! Sally Thurrell Photography - www.sallytphotography.com
35
From the Bride I hand made all of the wedding invites, table plan, place cards and table centre pieces (flowers grown in my Mums garden). Steven’s mum Anne made us some lovely strawberry whisky in little personalised bottles as favours and my cousin made my very tasty wedding cake. My love of horses always meant I wanted a horse and carriage to take us from the church to the reception – nothing flash just a local guy who was really friendly and relaxed. Everyone said you should take a moment in your wedding day to spend together and reflect on it, and the journey in the carriage allowed us to do that – it was lovely to enjoy some ‘us’ time, enjoy champagne and just breathe after the pre wedding work up!
Melissa & Steven Jervaulx Abbey
My mum and her family are originally from Middleham and I spent a lot of time there as a child. I always envisaged that I would get married in that church, as I knew it would mean a lot to my mum. Jervaulx Abbey was the perfect place for our reception as we are both outdoorsy, we were both won over by the natural beauty and atmosphere.
From the Groom My favourite moment of the day was seeing Melissa walking down the aisle and the horse and carriage journey to the reception. We kept the speeches relaxed but I was still so nervous! I had it all in my head and hadn’t written it down – probably should have done! I think I said thank you to everyone… 3 Words to describe your wedding day: “Everything we wanted.” From the Photographer Melissa and Steve are such a great couple and were so easy to work with, I think my favourite moment of their wedding was capturing a tender moment between Mel and her Dad when they were listening to Steve’s speech. That part of my job is priceless as it’s a moment that they will never forget anyway, but I caught on camera so they can have it forever.

Lauren & Dom Whinstone View
What made you choose your venue? It’s a relaxed venue, we loved the thought of getting married outside, Andrea the wedding planner was so helpful and can honestly not do enough to help you plan your day and help it run smoothly. Nothing is too much trouble for the staff at Whinstone View and it really stood out for us The Theme... Relaxed/rustic/vintage we chose muted pinks, purples, blues and creams. We wanted it to be a relaxed atmosphere where everyone felt comfortable and just enjoyed themselves! How did you entertain your guests? We had John McGough play sax during the drinks reception and then sunshine daze for the evening.
38
John and the band were fab, they really got everyone up on the dance floor The Details... Lauren her mam and sister made the ladies favours - they made teacup candles. They also made the placemats for the centre pieces, they were hessian with laces trims A Memorable Moment... Probably our first dance when all our guests sang along to ‘Can’t take my eyes off of you’ and joined us on the dance floor. From the Bride... I spent the morning with my close family and bridal party. We all had our hair and make up done at my parents house; whilst
having breakfast and some champagne for our (my!) nerves! Yes really nervous up until I walked down the aisle and I saw all of our friends and family. It was a lovely moment seeing everyone and seeing Dom at the end of the aisle. I relaxed after that point and had the most amazing day. 3 words to describe your wedding day? Unforgettable, whimsical, fun From the Groom... My ushers, best man and dad came round, we had breakfast together and I tried to relax! My favourite moment was when the bridal party came down the aisle; seeing Lauren, her bridesmaids and flower girls, is a moment I won’t forget.

Gemma & Steve At Home - Commondale
We love looking through the albums of our just married couples and this gorgeous wedding captured by Vicki Brotton is super cute. We loved the pretty candy coloured dresses the bridesmaids wore along with the rose bouquets they carried. Gemma and Steve made use of parasols and furniture which are great props for your wedding. Vicki Brotton is an established and highly regarded photographer with a varied and impressive portfolio of work under her belt, from family shoots as well as commercial and editorial magazine work. It’s obvious talking to Vicki that she is passionate about her couples and takes her time to understand what is important to them; this kind of approach allows everyone to relax around her, for her to fit right in and get the best shots of the day.
How would you describe your style of work? My style of photography is very natural and relaxed. This allows me to blend in with your guests and capture the special moments as they happen to tell the story of your day. Describe your couples… My couples are unique! Young or the more mature! From traditional romantics to alternative weddings. I love the different ideas and styles of my couples and it inspires me to capture their personalities on their special day! A venue that you love to work at… Every venue is different and brings with it exciting new photographic opportunities. I personally love the outdoors but I am often swayed by a romantic castle or stately home!

Tell us about Gemma & Steven? Gemma & Steven were a great couple to work with, they were excited about their wedding and wanted to have fun and enjoy the experience. I think this is reflected in their photographs. It is important to me to make my couples feel relaxed and comfortable in front of the camera this allows me to capture the natural moments in my photography.

...and I’m feeling good...
You only need to take a look around you in bars and restaurants, on nights out or even in the office, to see that Men’s Styling has taken a turn towards the smart. Gone are the logo t-shirts, the jeans and trainers, and the overlygelled hair. Men are now dressing like men. It’s like tailoring has come to town. It all started with the reinvention of the chino in varying brave shades at the forefront high street retailers; they made it okay to be bordering on the dressier side of smart casual – girlfriends everywhere rejoiced. Following that and most recently came the cool, laid back yet effortlessly chic nod to Old School – braces came back with sharp shirts, bow ties were no longer only paired with The Suit, braver colours than black and grey were deemed acceptable – and slightly eccentric facial hair arrived (girlfriends stopped rejoicing). Nowhere is this upwards curve more evident than in Men’s Wedding Tailoring.

Grooms are able to have more of a creative handle on their attire for the day – and that of their Groomsmen. Whereas Brides have often had a say in the styling for their man, we’re seeing a rise in Grooms owning it themselves. With such varied ranges coming into play, it truly is an opportunity to make a Style Statement. Tweeds in varying country and city palettes, use of patterns such as tartan, woven blends and herringbone are all making a scene. Handmade, traditional English pieces are proving popular over generic suiting, adding to the overall theme of the Big Day. Here, Charlotte Eve from Eve Photography shares with us a pinboard of inspiration – we’re particularly loving the layering textures – tweed on a crisp shirt, and polished metal buttons and pocket watches against floral button holes. The Debonair Groom is born.

Great

I would probably have to say the Fallen Trees as you have the stunning uninterrupted backdrop of the Cleveland Hills as your guests look on and, the surrounding fields add so much as well at whatever stage they are at, be it a gentle swaying of barley or the bright yellow of oil seed.

ANGROVE PARK
What styles of wedding do you see?
All our weddings are different as each couple decides what they would like to feature and puts their own stamp on things. We have had miles and miles of bunting and numerous hay bale creations; couples arriving in VWs and tractors; rainbow themes and vintage themes, spring weddings and summer weddings, Wedstock and Wedstival. It’s the people that make it at the end of the day.
Mix up the Great British outdoors, the beautiful landscape of North Yorkshire, a dedicated and innovative team and voila! You have the very beautiful luxury outdoor venue which is Angrove Park, complete with Honeymoon Suite and unique bus bar. Intrigued? We talk to owner Louise about life at Angrove and what a special and magical experience they offer to the couples that choose this stunning venue.
Does the weather have a say?

‘Some days you have to create your own sunshine’ and nowhere is that more true than in the UK. We are ready for all the British Summer weather, and go to great lengths to ensure it is not the main feature of the day but we embrace it and in its own funky way, it can add to that British Festival feel. Life at Angrove...
We converted a double-decker bus
into a bar that can be hired for events here at Angrove; as well as a great bar service it provides a great talking point for guests, amazing views and that added bit of je ne sais quoi. Our second double-decker bus conversion has been a labour of love that has upcycled, recycled, recreated and reproduced everything from watering cans to kitchen chairs, to create a rustic en-suite private woodland escape that you won’t want to leave! Nestled in the trees and surrounded by festoon lighting and an outside decking chill-out area, couples can simply relax, either under the stars in the hot tub, or upstairs inside in the ‘snug with a view’ over the course of their wedding weekend. It comes complete with large shower & toilet, breakfast room and facilities, mini-bar, and super king size bed upstairs. The perfect accompaniment to your bespoke wedding. What do you love most about Angrove Park?
I love the fact that we have built it from scratch and as a result it is a very important place to me, I want everyone who stays here to feel that it is important to them when they are here and experience it as their personal place for the whole weekend. Tel: 07920113599 www.angrovepark.co.uk

Anna ‘Cordelia’ Mason - Makeup Artist Smokey/grunge look This is my favourite smokey eye, undone, uncontrived and looks smouldering! It’s actually quite easy to achieve with a little practice and a few precautions to stop the dreaded black eye look. This is heavy eye makeup and you are likely to make a mess while attempting it. I always start such a look by working on the eyes first and then cleaning up any fall out prior to applying foundation. Applying a jet black gel eyeliner around the entire eye line including the top and bottom water line. Then be brave and take it out around the eyeline. If it looks a little messy at this stage, don’t worry. Take a super soft blending brush and blend it into nothing. No harsh lines here! Then to add depth and give some dimension to the black base, apply a multi toned dark brown eyeshadow over the top, again blend into nothing. I applied some strip lashes to Laurie for extra vava voom and even some individual lashes on the bottom outer lash line. With a such a strong eye the base should be simple and flawless and I used an illuminating foundation to achieve this and very little blush, just a pop of pink on the cheeks. Lips were hydrated with balm and the same pink pop from the cheeks was dabbed gently on the lips for a beautiful natural look. Watkins Wright Hairdressing Great Ayton
I would like to give a few words of praise and to say thank you to the wonderful stylists. I had my hair done there on the morning of my wedding I had met my stylist Katie the week before and we had gone over every aspect of my hair, as in colour cut and style so the whole morning flowed easily which also included plenty of tea, biscuits and empathy, I had been involved in a car accident a few days prior and was in agony on the day but nothing was too much trouble, I even made some slight changes to the style but Kate took it in her stride and I received so many compliments at the wedding an the style of my hair and also the wonderful colour Kate had put on my hair”
- Philipa Davies, May 2015
“I found out about Watkins Wright at a local bridal fair and after chatting to the girls I decided to make an appointment in the salon, following that I booked the girls for our wedding (I’m so glad I did!!) From the Beginning Amelia and the girls listened to my ideas, they offered advice and support and gave me some great tips before hand to ensure my hair was in great condition before our big day” On the day itself Amelia and Steph could not have done more, they were happy, chatty and completely put me at ease. My hair was utterly beautiful (as was that of my 3 bridesmaids) and I couldn’t have asked for a better service – I really can’t thank them enough”

Bex’s quirky secret attic has become a must-visit experience for fashionforward brides from all over the North East and beyond seeking vintage and pre-loved dresses from her eclectic collections. and this is only the tip of the iceberg! The beautiful new boho collections from Belgian designer Rembo Styling are a recent addition, offering a premium designer label at surprisingly affordable prices.
“Can't praise Rebecca enough! My wedding dress was perfect - it's as if she read my mind and designed exactly what I was thinking about...”
Vintage & Upcycled Many preloved or sample dresses with vintage shapes can be adapted and customised and this is where I completely admire Bex’s flair and imagination. A few tweaks, maybe even a new style of sleeve or adornment, can lead to a previously-overlooked gown can be transformed before your very eyes. Bex’s technique is impossible to describe - it has to be seen to be believed. Bex considers herself a designer as well as a dressmaker.
Bespoke & Save the Day! You might not have considered having a unique dress made for you, but this service is increasingly in demand from brides who have looked everywhere... Bex works with clients right through the process, building trust along the way. She loves the magical ‘Cinderella’ moment, when the bride sees the dress of her dreams for this first time. She can also repair or customise any dress brought to her to make it perfect. The Old Stable, Hurworth Grange, Hurworth Place Darlington, DL2 2BN www.bexbrides.co.uk Tel: 07801 443931

Say “I Do” to a Humanist wedding ceremony, with
King’s Celebrant Services
N ow more than ever you can think about a ceremony
that you as a couple would like, a truly personal experience that is completely unique. We caught up with Karen King from King’s Celebrant Services, to find out more. A Humanist Ceremony is based on love, relationships, family, support and community, values that Karen feels are the important things that bring and keep people together.
As bridal fashion marches away from the traditional say a big hello to this beautiful boho trend that is taking the bridal catwalks by storm, sleeves, lace and chiffon paired with loose boho hair creates an ethereal look that is the new ‘traditional’. This beautiful styled shoot in a derelict Edwardian house shows this trend off to the max and seeing this coming to life through Natalie’s talented camera work quite rightly caught the eye of Vogue. Bex used her collection of vintage upcycled gowns to create the look and with Kathy’s super styling turned these beautiful girls into real life models.

Once the legal formalities have been completed by a registrar this then leaves couples free to hold their wedding ceremony anywhere they chose. Family and friends can also take part if they wish by sharing readings and if you want something a little different Karen can talk you through some alternative customs such as broomjumping, hand-fasting or ring warming. Vow renewals, wedding celebration ceremonies for couples who have already married abroad and Civil Partnership update ceremonies are also available as well as Baby Naming’s which allow you to welcome a new child into the family whilst leaving them free to make their own choices in the future.

brides and grooms want their reception and ceremony rooms to look amazing and often the details can really add meaning and personality, so now with a specialist stationer on board Special Events can offer stationery to co-ordinate and complement the look couples want to achieve. Understanding the couple’s vision is key and their consultation process is a vital and enjoyable part of bringing it all together. Marilyn will meet couples either at their venue or at a place of their choosing; it’s a very relaxed meeting and throughout the planning process, if further meetings are required, this is all taken in their stride. Developing trust with their clients is so important and this is something Special Events really excel at because they take the time to get to know their couples beforehand and
then deliver, what they promise.
Marilyn says, “I believe that we understand what suits the venue, we take time to find out what the bride is looking for and we are able to source quality products.” Their pride, dedication and attention to detail has not gone unnoticed either and they are the preferred supplier of three fantastic NorthEast venues. Having a great relationship with Marilyn and Rob means they trust them implicitly when it comes to dressing their venues. Operating throughout the North-East from Scarborough to Newcastle, Special Events have styled a wide variety of venues, from weddings in marquees to luxury hotels, giving them a wealth of knowledge and experience and a fantastic reputation to match.

Personal touches… We have 3 children so we wanted to make it just as enjoyable for them. We set about arranging a separate table for the older children with kiddie decoration and dress up outfits, pens, paper glue etc etc. they loved it and kept them happy during speeches. I would say our wedding was ‘rustic chic’ (I found this term in a Kiss the Bride magazine!) We wanted our day to have lots of little personal touches and keepsakes. We had a thumb print canvas (which we have displayed at home) A vintage dressing table photobooth in keeping with the theme. We also had a hand painted dresser which displayed pictures of our family and ancestors on their wedding day which our family loved. The centre pieces were a miss match of lovely vintage trinkets such as birdcages, jugs with artificial flowers, vintage books, candles, vintage crockery all stood together on a hessian square. The favours were cinder toffee and nougat pieces wrapped in Grease proof paper and tied into a
hessian pouch. We gave it a feel of summer by including a daytime BBQ which everyone loved! A vintage Icecream van called Millie from Scoops And Smiles which had all those lovely flavours we all love replaced traditional desserts. Guests were entertained… We hired a magician for the few hours after guests arrived to the venue and had Garden games for the kids to keep them out of mischief lol and hired a band for both arriving and the evening. They had a sax player who played as guests arrived and mingled in the gardens. Memorable Moments… The father/daughter dance I did with my dad. It was really emotional. We had this before the first dance and the band sang ‘My Girl’. It was really touching and symbolic as my dad, at the end of the song, handed me over to my husband for the first dance. The Dress... A fishtail dress by Mon Cheri. Champagne fabric underneath with soft ivory lace laid over with
appliqué lace hand sewn over the bust and flowing down the dress. Bridesmaids and attendants… I had 7 adult bridesmaids and a bridesman (gay best friend) and hubby had 5 groomsmen including his dad and grandad The Bridesmaid dresses were from Exclusively Yours in Wingate and were stunning, we decided on a blend of different shades to match the wedding. Dusky pink, blush pink and my maid of honour was in a vintage lavender.

Whinstone View; an
enchanting retreat tucked away in 14 acres of surrounding woodland and beautiful Scandinavian log cabins, Wray’s Barn is packed to the brim with rustic charm and unique character. It really is a natural beauty! When you arrive, you get a real sense of what this venue is all about. Beautiful luscious greenery, gorgeous outside terraces and even a roaming peacock or two - all the boxes are ticked for Whinstone View before we even step inside. However, we were keen to learn more about what this venue has to offer in the out-of-peak season. With the days drawing in lighting, is a big factor in setting the mood and with the approach to Wray’s Barn all lit up with festoon lighting, it’s nothing short of magical. A romantic New Year’s Eve wedding at
whinStone view We desperately wanted
to get married on New Year’s Eve because we got engaged in Las Vegas on NYE so the date is special to us. We had given up on the idea until we met Andrea. We originally went to discuss a Spring wedding until Andrea told us about their exciting barn project – Wray’s Barn. As soon as Andrea showed us the plans we said yes! I just knew it would be beautiful. We watched the barn going up and were invited to lots of events at Whinstone View- in one event we watched a virtual tour of the barn; it was fab! When I saw the completed barn, it exceeded all my expectations. It was so beautiful; I knew my wedding day would be perfect! Magical Winter weddings... Winter weddings are

utterly magical and romantic. Honestly the best day of our life and we both said we wouldn’t change a thing! Would you recommend Whinstone View? Absolutely! The whole day was perfect and that was down to the staff; they helped us to create what was the best day of our lives. Andrea, the wedding co-ordinator, made sure the day ran flawlessly while the waitresses made sure the venue looked beautiful from start to finish. Nothing was a chore - even the day before staff helped us to set up and we were there for hours. Whinstone View is a beautiful venue with a stunning backdrop, incredible food and hospitality; intimate and relaxed. Having the lodges also added a wonderful end to a magical day.

As far as fairytale
weddings go, the setting at Durham Castle couldn’t be more perfect. With a rich heritage dating back to William the Conqueror and having accommodated the Queen of England, this residence really is fitting for a wedding. Durham Castle is currently a college for Durham University students but during university holidays the Castle is available for private functions, completely away from the public, making this your exclusive venue!

used for weddings? You really do need to visit Durham Castle to appreciate its architecture and beauty, but we will try to describe as best as we can! Once you arrive on to Palace Green and make your way to Durham Castle, the courtyard is your first port of call, which is where we host reception drinks and canapés. The Tunstal Gallery and Senate Suite are both available for an indoor drinks reception. We have a beautiful ‘secret garden’ which is a stunning location for photography. The ‘Undercroft Bar’ is situated below ground level and is

The official marriage ceremony cannot be performed at Durham Castle but there are churches close by along with Durham Registry Office. For those who are lucky enough to gain permission, ceremonies can also take part in Durham Cathedral!
Interesting facts… Durham Castle is not open to the public and access can only be made with daily guided tours which can be booked via Palace Green Library. Even on the tours there are certain parts of the Castle that people do not get to see, but couples do! T
he Parkmore Hotel, situated on the outskirts of Yarm, is one of those hidden gems, a family-owned business independently run by Jeremy and Louise along with their son James; experienced hoteliers who know what it takes to make guests feel welcome. A warm welcome from the off from highly-trained, uniformed staff creates that air of elegance on arrival. Great food and hospitality are the makings of a memorable occasion and again The Parkmore Hotel gets this right on all levels. The dedicated catering staff, lead by experienced head chef Patrick Yen, deliver exceptionally high standards of cuisine and not just in tiny portion sizes either! Locally sourced produce and home-made favourites are staples, along with beautifully presented mouth watering desserts. We particularly love their Sunday Roast dinner! Steeped in heritage, this beautiful property dates back to 1896 and was originally the home of a wealthy ship-building family. Many original features are still evident, including the stunning examples of handpainted stained glass above the main doors and the beautiful picture window at the top of the main staircase: Interesting features your

photographers will be able to use to capture those all important precious moments of your day. Upon choosing your wedding here, you will be able to select one of three function suites to entertain your guests. The Three Rivers Suite can host weddings up to 120 and is the largest of the rooms: spacious, fully air-conditioned and with a private bar. For smaller and more intimate weddings the Yarm Suite, with its French doors leading into a secluded courtyard, is a beautiful space for up to 50 guests to enjoy. The newly refurbished J’s @636 restaurant is a modern and contemporary space accommodating up to 65 for dinner. The Yarm Suite is licenced for civil ceremonies, which adds convenience for couples that would prefer to stay in one place. And with an impressive 55 rooms available, accommodating guests couldn’t be easier either: why cut the evening short to find a taxi, when a comfortable room and a hot breakfast the next day could be yours? If that wasn’t enough, you can start your honeymoon in complete relaxation enjoying the leisure club facilities which include a heated indoor pool, sauna and steam room, perfect also for the night before your big day.

English Law allows you to be married in the church of the parish where you live, or have lived for any 6 month period in the past. You can also be married in the same church where your parents or grandparents were married, or where you were christened, and if you have fallen in love with a particular church, you can simply “habitually attend” for six months and you are qualified to get married there as well. There are other qualifying factors too, so see your local vicar to explain them to you. They will be thrilled to welcome you. Second marriages are also possible in the Church of England, but your vicar might need to ask you a few questions, and any nonBritish nationals may have to go through certain legal preliminaries first. Go and talk to your vicar about the possibilities; they will be
delighted to help you. The law doesn’t allow the Church of England to do same sex marriages. I hear you like magic tricks… Every vicar will have their own way of making the service special and adding a little bit of magic is mine. I love the effect of the cut and restored rope trick when jaws drop open to see the rope joined back together again. It is such a special time… It is a great privilege to be with a family at such an important event in their lives, and it is always a delight when you see them again afterwards. Some come back again on Sundays, or for christenings, but I hope all know that the door is always open and a welcome waiting for whenever they come. What is the smallest group you have performed a ceremony for? The smallest wedding I have taken had bride, groom, bridesmaid, best man, two witnesses and me present.

One happy couple is Suzanne and Craig who were recently married in Positano. From the moment I spoke to cheryl pagano of bella Sposa I knew I had found the perfect person to help organise our wedding. She was so knowledgable about the area and totally on my wave length. She listened to us and understood exactly what we were looking for. She guided us through every stage of our wedding planning and it was so lovely that whenever she was home visiting her family she came to see us too.
We chose positano town hall to get married as it has an intimate terrace overlooking the stunning Amalfi coast where they hold the ceremonies. We also wanted a reception venue that was intimate for our party where we would have the place to ourselves. As well as being contemporary and modern with amazing food. Cheryl recommended a small boutique hotel with a great restaurant and amazing views of Capri. It was absolutely perfect! It had an amazing rooftop terrace where we had our drinks reception. We then moved to the Capri terrace for our fabulous
dinner and then to the pool area for dancing! We were even more delighted when it was awarded a Michelin star, a few months before our wedding. Cheryl helped with all of the fine details for the ceremony and the reception, even my special request to arrange a Porsche as a surprise for Craig, on the morning of the wedding. I still can’t believe she managed to pull this off, but she did! Contact: Cheryl Pagano Tel: 0039 339 2240 680 info@weddingplannersorrento.co.uk www.weddingplannersorrento.co.uk

LIGHTS. CARRO. ACTION. LET KATHRYN AND MICHAEL CARRUTHERS OF CARRO OF WYNYARD PHOTOGRAPHY SHOW YOU QUICK TIPS AND TRICKS FOR BETTER HONEYMOON OR WEDDING SNAPS, BRINGING OUT THE DAVID BAILEY IN YOU.
Photography has never been more accessible than it is right now. Almost everyone seems to have a smart phone and they’re not just for the younger generation either. If you’ve started to take photography a little more seriously, or you’ve got a new piece of kit you want to get to grips with, read on. Although photographing your big day should be left to the professionals, we talk to Kathryn and Michael Carruthers of Carro of Wynyard Photography about some basic tips and advice that will have you on your way to better honeymoon or family snaps in no time at all.
LIGHT When photographing indoors, move closer to a light source such as a lamp or fire. The closer the subject is to the light, the broader and more diffused it is, creating a softer, flattering light. The sun is far away and creates harsh, strong light. Place the subject with their back to the sun to create a flattering, even skin tone and a halo of light (backlighting/rim lighting) which avoids unflattering highlights and shadows across the face. Using a reflector to both diffuse (scatter) the light and to bounce it back into the subjects eyes will make them come alive. This all-important ‘catchlight’ is the reflection of the light in the eye and brings a subject to life.
Expensive equipment does not equal talent and does not guarantee great images: after all, owning a Steinway Baby Grand won’t ensure that you can play a symphony. The most important factors are to know the full potential of your kit and to understand the basic elements of photography such as light and composition. Many people think that photography is a point-and-shoot exercise but do you know your f-stops from your Kelvin temperatures?
POSING Taking a shot from above is the most flattering angle for portraiture. Ask the subject to bring their chin and ears forward to create a stronger jawline when facing the camera rather than adopting a relaxed stance. Both of these techniques reduce visible double chins. It feels unnatural. I always say to my clients, if they feel uncomfortable they’re probably doing it right!
COMPOSITION Have you ever wondered what that funny grid is that you keep accidentally knocking on your screen? It’s a composition grid. For professionals, there are many composition theories. The most common is the age-old ‘rule of thirds’. The rule of thirds divides your image into 9 equal sections, whether portrait or landscape. For the most pleasing composition, put your subject or point of interest on one of the 4 points where the lines intersect. Alternatively, place the subject along the lines as guides. Although not as strong as the intersecting points, the lines also create a balanced image. For stunning landscapes, place the horizon on either the top or bottom vertical line. Set your camera to include the visible grid when shooting or keep it in mind when framing the shot.
114
YOU DON’T NEED A MILLION REASONS TO CHOOSE A PHOTOGRAPHER...JUST TWO. CARRO THE DUO!
Then have fun! Use props, find quirky locations. Think outside the box! Use mirrors to shoot reflections! Don’t just stand on the stairs, lie on them! Become a photography ninja – capturing candid, moments in action. I will leave you one little exercise. Stand still and shoot 10 different frames. What is above you or below? What if you shoot from the floor? Macro (close up). Shoot closer objects or the farthest horizon! Test the boundaries. It’s not all about the kit but using your camera and creativity to their full potential!
Ensure the subject lifts their arm away from their body so it isn’t pressed against it. Both their body will appear wider and the flesh will be spread making it look larger. This is a great tip for brides walking down the aisle too as the waist is accentuated! When holding your bouquet, hold your arms slightly away from the body leaving a gap. Modelling is about creating negative spaces (gap between the arm and the body). Next time you read Vogue, observe the awkward and contorted angles that high fashion models use to create an amazing shot!
For more hints and tips why not book in for 1:1 training for amateurs with CARRO of Wynyard. Join the camera club or 4-week class? *subject to availability.

jewellery also known as Mobeus is something to behold a true artisan and master goldsmith based in Hartlepool. Mark has nearly 30 years under his belt and is at the top of his game when it comes to designing and creating wedding and engagement rings. For me the sign of a true artist is someone who can make something that looks good but also with meaning that can be treasured for generations and without doubt Mark scores full marks. Mark’s wife Michelle says, “I was surprised that couples leave it quite late to source their wedding rings and yet it is so true that the rings represent the importance of your relationship and significance of the love you are pledging to each other.” In recent times, the most obvious options have involved buying a ready made item but Mark
has completely turned this idea on its head by offering a bespoke service that it is both beautiful and meaningful. We were interested to find out how grooms are getting involved too and Michelle goes on to explain that “jewellery for men is becoming a growing trend, wedding rings for the groom has become a whole different game. It seems that ‘their’ wedding ring is just as important and exciting! There are so many ideas and designs and they also like the fact that they can come to us with ideas and we can turn that into something real.” Customers are always welcome to just pop in our shop to browse. There is always plenty to look at however we always advise customers to make an appointment if they would like to discuss a design.
117
“ We wouldn’t have
wanted to just pick one off a shelf. Every time I look at my rings now I see works of arts ” It’s the beautiful stories behind the pieces of jewellery that Mark creates that becomes part of the magic and makes their service so unique and special. Victoria and Michael were delighted with the whole experience and their story has a beautiful and poignant twist. Victoria and Michael both love Art Deco and Celtic designs and Michael worked with Mark to draw out a design. “Mark gave him lots of advice on the materials as I don’t like gold. I absolutely loved the ring and haven’t seen anything else like it.” Victoria goes on to explain that “Even more beautiful is the care and inventiveness Mark applied to my wedding ring. Unfortunately I lost my mum 6 months after Michael proposed. She was so excited about us getting married and she loved Michael so much. I took my mum’s engagement
118
and wedding ring in to Mark and asked him if there was any way they could be used in my wedding ring, I didn’t have much hope, as they were both gold and not really my style. Mark said to leave it with him. When I returned he had cleaned up the engagement ring and said I should keep it, but he then told me how he could fuse a wedding band of my choosing with my mums ring, so it would be on the inside, He could retain the hallmark on my mums ring and it would mean that her ring would always be next to my skin. When I went to pick it up, I was almost brought to tears. It is absolutely beautiful and meant so much to me, as my mum was involved in my wedding ceremony, she contributed such an important part, thanks to Mark.

We also want to offer our congratulations to Mark and Michelle as they are now married and of course there was no pressure on Mark… “My ring was actually designed and handmade by Mark and comes in 3 parts. The engagement ring which is made in platinum and rose gold loosely based on a yin
yang shape. It is set with 18 rubies and a diamond. A platinum wedding band and eternity ring will fit either side, tucked in snug under the engagement ring. Mark is currently working on the design of his own wedding ring which will somehow incorporate the design of my engagement ring.” www.marklloydjewellery.co.uk Tel:01429 221000 120 Park Road, Hartlepool TS26 9HU

FIREWORKS TO MUSIC AND SO MUCH MORE
Impact Pyrotechnics Ltd offer a completely open and tailored service to suit budgets and requirements for all manner of people. From explosive firework displays to round off your day; to pyro-musical displays where the effects are choreographed to music of your choice; subtle accompaniments to best man speeches or entrance themes; bringing close-proximity effects to your wedding or even background pieces designed solely to present your theme for the day.
You may never have
seen or even considered the idea of pyrotechnics at a wedding before. Whilst the term might imply images of fireworks and extravagance in your mind, the reality is that of a much softer, complimentary light. Fireworks at a wedding?! I’ve never seen that before? How can that work? Whilst having fireworks to enhance your evening is an increasingly popular idea, pyrotechnics can offer much, much more. A way of bringing your wedding to life in ways you never thought possible, creating an atmosphere you and your guests will never expect. How would I do that? I already know what theme I want... Pyrotechnics can be the
120
perfect accompaniment to the feel and style that you want for your wedding. And they can leave a lasting imprint long after the day has been wrapped up. Consider the idea of your names in lights projected onto your dance floor as you take your first dance, or perhaps even a warming display of sparks as the bride and groom are presented to their guests. Incidental pieces can be woven into your day without ever becoming intrusive. With so many different aspects available for weddings, it’s difficult to see ones that truly stand out. People want to create experiences that they and their guests will never forget, and new avenues are being explored all the time. Pyrotechnics have a lot to offer that nothing else can.
Wayne Wilson is the MD of Impact Pyrotechnics Ltd: A north-east UK-based company that have a catalogue of products for a wedding that will illuminate even the most polished of wedding plans. At his wife Catherine’s suggestion Wayne took his production company to a local charity fundraising wedding fair in 2009, to display a new range of products and ideas for a new generation of weddings. After performing the show, Wayne and his company received 35 bookings by the end of that evening. “It’s not about stealing the day.” says Wayne, “It’s about complimenting - truly complimenting - the Bride and Grooms’ vision”. By bringing this big atmosphere and polished production feel to the wedding day, you can enjoy an environment that is truly befitting of the emotion and feeling you will all feel on the big day. In amongst project managing a display for the European Games in Baku in June and running
wedding displays all over the UK and Europe, Wayne and his company recognise how everyone’s day is important: “As a company we don’t offer set package prices, because every couple’s requirements are individual, every venue is different, and people want something unique for their day which is what we can offer them”.
Pyrotechnics Ltd are the new best friend you never knew you had. Indeed, if you’d like an easier job of handling event décor, venue lighting inside and out etc.; contact Impact Pyrotechnics Ltd and request a quote that will wrap everything up in one trusted, spectacular service.

By coming up with a budget and a detailed plan of requirements with every customer, anyone can benefit from the glittering service Impact Pyrotechnics Ltd provides. No job is too big or too small. And there’s always room for flexibility: You can keep the ceremony absolutely traditional, and save the pyrotechnics for the reception, creating as much or as little impact as you require. If you think your wedding theme could be emphasised by, perhaps, pyro-musical fireworks, your names in lights, confetti cannons, snow machines, audio visual displays - the list is endless - Impact

The National
Vintage Wedding Fair
The National Vintage
Wedding Fair is the original UK wedding fair of its kind. Opening their doors to hundreds of vintage loving brides back on Valentine’s Day 2010, the fair has gone on to win awards and more importantly, provided authentic vintage gowns for brides across the country. No, in fact the world as brides have travelled from Europe and even as far as South America to find that perfect dress. Their fairs concentrate on larger cities within the UK and showcase only the best vintage wedding businesses who not only deliver a great service but are passionate towards weddings of yesteryear. With 45 exhibitors, from cakes, flowers, photographers, stationary to wedding dresses, lingerie, shoes and accessories – brides literally can plan their whole day here. And they do. We caught up with Kate Beavis, who owns the fair alongside her husband Adam. “We pride ourselves in bringing a true vintage experience
to the fair itself so, the couples can go on and create this for their big day. Our unique selling point is the amount of original dresses we have for sale on the day – where else can you find an Edwardian dress, a 1920s flapper dress, a 1930s bias cut dress, a 1950s fit and flare, a 1960s mini dress and a 1970s floaty, boho maxi dress, all in the same place? These have all been lovingly restored, so you can find your dress in wonderful condition ready to wear on the day. Our exhibitors are also on hand to advise on fit, tailoring, adapting and storing; they are hugely knowledgeable and passionate about the dresses and helping you find that perfect style.” Adam continues, “It’s not just about the dresses though. At our fairs we have live entertainment and DJs who can be booked for your wedding day. We have a pop up vintage tea room, catwalk shows and other caterers serving canapes and cocktails, which of course can also be booked. Last year we introduced “inspiration stations” – a place where you can sit
and learn a new craft such as how to make flower crowns from foraged flowers, or garlands to decorate your venue. Get your hair styled and your make up too, sit in a vintage vehicle, and keep your eyes peeled for Charleston flash dancers and vintage magicians!” Don’t just take their word for it though. Katherine Higgins, the vintage Antiques Roadshow expert described this as “the place to get your vintage wedding dress from”, Annabel Beeforth from Love My Dress and writer of the book “Style Me Vintage, Weddings” describes this as “one of the very best, most brilliantly organised wedding events out there” and even Channel 4 filmed them last autumn. Make-up Advice from Claire Hartley brows can do!
Lashes should compliment your make up and there are several options to explore.
Strip Lashes and Cluster Lashes - sometimes known as party lashes, are a quick fix, giving instant volume and length. They can be applied on the day and are easily removed. With a array of styles to choose from, you can compliment your make up look perfectly!
“If the eyes are the window to the soul, then the eyebrows are the frame!”
I once read this quote and I’m always amazed at how much of a difference your brows can make to your face.
Your brows will define your eyes, will frame your face and enhance your eye make up.
In my opinion, brow shaping is an art. I will assess your face shape and colouring before creating a bespoke brow, tailored exclusively to each individual. Even with sparse, over plucked brows, I can work with you on a regrowth programme leading up to your wedding. You’ll be amazed at what
Eyelash Extensions are individual lashes, applied one at a time onto your natural lashes. You can create subtle enhancement to a full on glamorous look. They can last up to 6 weeks although maintenance is required to keep your lashes looking their best! Lash Lift Treatments are incredibly popular at present, and I love this treatment! Incorporating an eyelash tint, your natural lashes are transformed! Lashes are lifted from the root, giving length, height and volume. There is little maintenance required and this treatment is perfect for honeymoon too! Contact: Claire Hartley Makeup and Beauty on Beauty Images: Victoria Edwards Photography
