The beauty of the Sorrentine Peninsula is nothing short of spectacular; we took four days out to explore Ravello, the Amalfi coast, Positano and Sorrento with our guide Cheryl Pagano of Bella Sposa. The extraordinary landscapes are incredible: in one direction you face lush green mountains, turn to see dramatic limestone cliffs overlooking azure blue seas and then wander down tiny medieval alleyways taking in fragrant lemon gardens in abundance.

We start in the Ancient town of Ravello, a popular destination for aristocrats and artists, perched on a mountain ledge 350m above the sea, providing panoramic views to take your breath away. We chose the beautiful Claire Pettibone Gown ‘La Perla’ from Kathryn S Trueman in Morpeth – instantly transforming Mara into a medieval princess. Working her magic with the brushes was professional makeup artist Nikki Storey, based in Positano; she finished off the look with a long single plait and complemented this with the Aurelia headpiece from What Katy Did Next. Hard at work was cameraman Daniel from Shoot Me Now films capturing the space and movement that a camera just can’t.

Positano

Gem of the divine coast, is beyond expectations. Cheryl guided us through the tiny streets where our newlyweds received a lot of attention.Wearing the exquisite Noguera Yolan Cris from Kathryn S Trueman featuring an embellished illusion bodice and the finest floaty skirt delicately rippling in the sea breeze (left page). On the pretty beaches of Positano Mara is transformed into a Greek goddess. The gold beads from the gown from Bexbrides shimmered in the sun; Nicki teased loose locks and worked in gold leaf hair combs from What Katy Did Next. Vyncent is suitably suave in this laid back look; where we teamed the ivory jacket and waistcoat combo with french navy chino’s from Dandy Threads in Guisborough.

Amalfi Coast Taking in the Amalfi Coast and racing back to catch the best sunset of the week, we just had time to discover this beauty spot: a stunning backdrop for your wedding photographs. Mara wears the exquisite Yolan Cris Olivia gown in Champagne from Kathryn S Trueman’s exquisite boutique in Morpeth. Stocking coveted designers from across the world, we were really spoilt for choice when it came to choosing the gowns to accompany us on this shoot. We absolutely loved our shopping trip! Kathryn and her team were incredibly helpful and as brides popped in and out, it was plain to see the outstanding attention they received. Also, there is no doubt this is a high end, luxury bridal boutique and I half admit to expecting to be treading on egg shells when I first visited but I couldn’t have been more wrong. I was immediately welcomed and the atmosphere was warm, inviting and quite down to earth, I would highly recommend. Kathryn continues to bring fantastic designers to the North East, making her the go to bridal boutique for beautiful couture labels offering brides something that bit more special.

Bella Sposa Cheryl Pagano from Bella Sposa is not only English speaking she is a local girl from the Northeast, who married her Italian sweetheart and now calls Sorrento home! In fact it’s obvious during our visit that she is part of the rich tapestry of this family orientated community; highly regarded, knowledgeable and well liked gives her the edge when it comes to planning your wedding. I have no doubt that whatever your big day plans include, Cheryl can source pretty much everything. Tour operator packages sold en masse may seem a bit lack lustre when it comes to the personal touches you would expect back home but Cheryl is completely independent of these and not only will she be able to make the most out of

your budget, but will help you pack it with personal touches too. We talk to Cheryl about some of the venue options to consider, whether its Classic Italian Elegance, Chic and Boutique or a rustic family restaurant, there really is something for everyone’s taste and budget. “I have to say for the ceremonies, I do love the Cloisters of Saint Francis. This venue dates back to the 8th century so it has such an authentic and romantic feel to it. Although Sorrento is home to me, I do love Positano and the view from the terrace of the town hall there can only be described as breath taking.”

“As for reception venues, I love the modern feel of The Vista Sky Bar at The Hotel Mediterraneo and hearing the guests synchronised reaction of “WOW” when they arrive. The Hotel Mediterraneo offers a stunning pool area, relaxed garden area, 7th floor restaurant looking out to Mount Vesuvius and not to mention their new skybar that offers 360 degree views of Sorrento!” “I also really like villa weddings as they allow bridal parties to have complete privacy and to really let loose on the decoration side of things. Villa Antiche Mura is a personal favourite of mine as it is also where I got married. It is only a short drive from the Cloisters and literally sits on the cliff edge looking out to the Bay of Naples. There are also some great hotels here but I tend to only work with ones that can give my couples exclusive areas.”

Tessa looked completely elegant in her Rembo Styling Joya gown with a statement blue headpiece from What Katy Did Next and blue Aruna Seth shoes. In complete contrast Mara wore a customised vintage gown from Bexbrides to give us that ‘Free spirited’ Boho vibe. Both looks including hair were styled perfectly by Argentinian make-up artist Jimena Puy.

Moodboard Wedding and Event Planner Kirstin Halstead styles up our three inspirational moodboards and talks us through each look.

Ethereal Translucent A translucent paper place setting inspired this ethereal table styling. Dress your tables with nude, grey or delicate layered sheer fabric to set the tone. We styled the place settings with clear charger plates supplied by Whitehouse Event Crockery, silver flecked napkins, translucent paper place settings and clear quartz crystals. Use candles and masses of timeless cream flowers for drama on the tables and around your venue. Use ghost chairs for your ceremony seating. All you need now is a show-stopping sheer bridal gown to complete the look.

Powder Blue Blue Hydrangeas are my favourite flower so I knew we had to create a look based on this pretty bloom. To style the tabletop we used powder blue table linen, silver charger plates, Wedgwood-inspired napkins, silver-rimmed glassware, and a single white rose at each place setting. To complete the look, Regal Florists designed high and low floral arrangements for the table using blue hydrangeas, cream roses and peonies among others for a luxurious touch. The Flamingo Bakery designed a breathtaking cake inspired by the colours, patterns and textures of blue hydrangeas.

Moroccan Jewel With travel and culture being a huge inspiration for wedding design at the moment, we decided to create a rich jewel-toned Moroccan table set up in an English country garden. To set the scene we created a tabletop filled with pink, gold and turquoise lanterns, candles and dinnerware under a colourful sheer canopy. We decorated the table with gold sequin table linen and roses. Set this into one long table and it would be a really romantic outdoor setting for an evening rehearsal dinner.

I’m so lucky to have this magnificent backdrop literally on my doorstep and for five years I’ve anticipated capturing the exquisite beauty of bluebell woods but every year I miss it! The short window for wild bluebells is a national phenomenon and starts early May in some regions, lasting until early June if you’re lucky! This special collaboration for Pretty Gorgeous included Victoria Edwards Photography and our friends Watkins-Wright Hairdressing. Both had the unenviable job of managing these three divas, and their demands, including certain hair styles! I have to say it was no easy task but both took it in their stride and had them loving all of the extra attention.

28

Dresses are available in baby sizes and go up to teens, in particular that awkward 10-14 range when some bridesmaid styles can look too grown up. Our stylish tea-length dresses can all be customised with flower corsages and silk ribbon sashes to impress the most discerning fashionista... Even if she is only three!

Inviting children to your wedding? Kirstin Halstead shares her top tips to keep children happy and entertained on your big day. Remember, children bring fun, laughter and adorable moments to a wedding so don’t freak out too much about inviting your friends’ and family’s young ones. The only thing I would say is: don’t go crazy with the invites - keep children to a manageable number. Be prepared, have fun organising children’s entertainment and enjoy the day together. • Fidgeting – Children have a short attention span and can easily become bored and restless, especially during the wedding ceremony and speeches, so it is a good idea to have a quiet room for these moments. If you don’t have that option then prepare a personalised activity bag full of quiet fun to occupy them. • Activity Goody Bag – Speak with the parents and ensure you include age-appropriate goodies to keep children occupied throughout the day. Include crayons and colouring books, create a supervised scavenger hunt map, disposable camera, puzzle books, healthy snacks (check dietary requirements with parents first), toys and glow sticks.

30

31

"We didn't realise we were making memories, we just knew we were having fun" 32

33

• Include Me – Some children want to be involved and feel an important part of the day so ask them to hand out favours and confetti to your guests. • Garden Games – If your reception venue has a garden or a safe outdoor area then plan for some outdoor games during the drinks reception. Include giant jenga, hula hoops, giant Connect 4, lawn bowling, Twister or maybe even a bouncy castle or carnival style games. • Quiet Movie Room – Supervised by either a hired crèche/ professional minder service or a willing group of parents, quiet rooms are just what children need for those parts of the day when boredom kicks in and they become tired from all of the excitement. Ask your venue to provide a TV and DVD player so you can offer a selection of films for them to watch. Make sure the room has lots of soft furnishings and comfy chairs. You also want to include a table full of board games, colouring books and crayons. • The Food – Create a special children’s menu with your caterer to include items such as pizzas, mac and cheese, mini burgers and salad. Serve treats like milkshakes and cookies for the toasts. Ensure you discuss with parents all dietary requirements in advance. • Children’s Table – Having a children’s table for the wedding breakfast has pros and cons. Cons being that parents won’t be sat with their children but you can have them seated at tables close by and the children will enjoy sitting together for dinner. Include ‘colouring-book-style place mats and crayons for the table so the children can colour in while they await the food. • Book a Photo Booth – Photo booths are one of the best ways to keep children and even the adults entertained. What is more fun than dressing up in silly hats and posing with your friends! • Entertainment - This is one of the fun parts, booking the children’s entertainment. There are so many options, whether it be a magician, clown or a balloon artist, even a mini zoo could be fun? Check with your venue first.

Create Your own Stylish Napkins So you have found a fabric you love and want to make napkins with it for your big day. DIY goddess Natalie Convery from Hand Maid is here to tell you how. Step One Iron your chosen fabric to remove any creases – this will make it easier to work with.

Step Two Cut your fabric into pieces 28cm x 30cm to make your napkins. This includes a 1cm seam allowance all the way around. Step Three Fold over the straight edge of your fabric by 0.5cm to lose the raw cut edge. Then turn again by 0.5cm to remove the raw edge from the inside and create a clean seam. Iron this fold flat so it is easier to work with on the machine. Step Four Place your fabric and turned seam under the sewing machine and stitch down the inside edge of the seam to keep it in place. Step Five Repeat around all four edges of the napkin. Step Six Fold in half and press and you have a finished napkin!

Venue: Grinkle Park Hotel Photographer: Keith Moss Photography Crockery: Whitehouse Event Crockery Cake: Sugarcraft Flowers: Flowermaiden Linens & Table Decorations: Hand Maid Silk Ribbon: PomPom Blossom

“We had a go at making our own napkins too and it is much easier than we thought. Thank you, Natalie.” Have a go at this awesome DIY - we would love to see what you create. Share your image with us on Instagram or Twitter @kissthebridemag and use #HandMaidDIY.

“Of the day,

the thing that

stands out most is laughter!”

Katie and Joe Stammers first met at university in Scarborough, when, like every good Disney film, fate pulled them together through a shared love of the classic fairytales.

Katie & Joe Grinkle Park, Saltburn 54

Joe proposed to Katie in Scarborough on Christmas Day and so begins this story... Having been to Grinkle Park in North Yorkshire for a friend’s wedding early into their engagement, all they needed to do was meet Richard, General Manager at the hotel, and they were sold. “Richard put us at ease; he allowed us to run the meal as we wanted,” says Joe. “He ensured that it was the most personal wedding we could have – which was perfect for us”.

Ensuring personal touches for the décor, they used wedding photographs from their friends’ weddings, alongside reams of bunting and Disney table places. The children from Katie’s class even wrote messages for guests to read at their tables. The guest favours were a mini-vinyl of their favourite songs. For a hand-made feel, Joe made chalkboards and the signs leading through the hotel’s grounds. However the icing on the cake was a surprise present made be Joe’s Dad - a wooden life-size Lumiére from the Disney film ‘Beauty and the Beast’ with a sign saying ‘Be Our Guest’. “We’ve still got it in our hall now!” says Joe.

Peter planned a surprise engagement which was so romantic. He surprised Katy with a trip to Dublin where her late grandparents had got married. Pete proposed outside the very church on the same day that would have been Katie’s Grandparents 64th wedding anniversary. Katy had always dreamt of getting married at the Winterschladen (Grandparents) family home. “We had a clear vision of what we wanted our Marquee to look like and Black Cherry Events helped create our

very personal, elegant wedding venue that had the “wow” factor for our guests. “We wanted our wedding to be elegant, personal and have the best mix of Pete and I. Pete has loved tractors since growing up in the countryside and so it was very important for him to arrive at church in a huge “Black Beauty” Fendt 939 that Peacock and Binnington very kindly supplied for us. I have always dreamt of my wedding day from being a little girl. I love detail and wanted to make our wedding very special and memorable. We created the K&P crest with our friend David, who runs a design agency. We wanted the K&P crest to represent the style of our wedding and we used it

on the invitations, menus, table names, table plans, gifts, right through to the ‘thank you’ cards. We had black and white photos of our late Grandparents framed with candles and a sign in the entrance marquee. My father-in-law created an amazing sign that had our special landmarks written on it – Hull, where we met; Dublin, where Pete proposed; New York, where I was surprised for my 30th birthday; and Knaresborough; being where we live plus, an extra signpost directing to the marquee with “Mr & Mrs Egerton” upon it. My Dad also surprised us with a special flag at the bottom of the drive with the K&P crest, which wowed guests and also made it clear where the reception was from the church.”

Teenage sweethearts Abigail and Matthew were both members of Redcar’s young firefighter association back in 2003 when they first started dating.

I later found out he’d worn his winter coat as he hid the ring box in his hood; he knew I’d have seen it in his pocket and didn’t want to ruin the surprise.

“It was 13th August 2014; Matt being his spontaneous self asked if we could go for a late walk on the beach with fish and chips. I remember laughing at him as it was quite hot out yet he put on his big winter coat. As we were walking back home along the beach Matt started drawing in the sand with the help our two year old son, Bobby. I walked ahead and left them playing when Matt shouted me. When I turned around he was down on one knee inside a big love heart in the sand proposing! Of course I didn’t hesitate in saying ‘yes’ as the dog walkers around us started clapping...

We enjoy the outdoors and spend time walking, biking, camping and taking Bobby on adventures to the Lake District. We had originally seen photos of Whinstone View on social media and knew it suited our personalities and the vintage theme we were wanting. The theme for the wedding was everything that Matt and I loved rolled into one day. We both have a love for the Lake District, subtle colours and vintage accessories and wanted to incorporate the outdoors as much as possible.

Matt’s brother Tom was best man and he’s known for being a joker; its fair to say Matt and I were both a little nervous at what was going to be included, but his fantastic use of poetry and knowledge of Matt and I blew us away. However, we were totally unprepared for a poem he read that was written by Matt’s Dad, Stuart. It was written from the view of our son Bobby, who has special needs and is non-verbal. This part of the day was made memorable because we were able to hear what someone believed Bobby’s feelings were towards us. It was very emotional and had us all in tears! Remember, the day is about you both as a couple: don’t try to please everybody else. Let your personalities shine through the day and give yourselves a day to remember.”

Kelvin and Kirsty first locked eyes on each other at V Festival, sharing food and their love of music and later reconnecting via Facebook. “Kelvin took me away to my favourite place (Cornwall) camping for the weekend to celebrate the anniversary of the date we met. We went into Newquay for food and then, as it got dark, we had a nightcap at The Boathouse, listening to the sound of the sea. It’s such a romantic place, with the fishing boats straight in front and candles everywhere. He then asked if I fancied a walk back along the beach and halfway, under the stars, he turned me around and put one knee in the sand. It was perfect and perfectly us. Immediately on viewing Wray’s Barn at Whinstone View we fell in love with it. It felt warm and friendly; it’s a familyrun business and definitely retains the charm of this. It embraced the outdoors

with so much greenery and outside space. The beams, fairy lights and the fact they weren’t selling a set package but would fit it around your wishes and personalities, topped with the fact they offered a ‘Festival Theme’ and that’s how we met - it just felt right. It was quirky for us whilst being comfortable for all our guests. Obviously the festival theme was the overall vibe we were going with, but it was also important that our wedding felt relaxed. It was a whole family occasion and so we had our Weimaraner ‘Woody’ dropped off wearing his bow tie after all the guests had eaten. It all worked out perfectly. During the day we had an amazing acoustic duo called The Project, there was table football which was a huge hit and space hopper races.

great DJ called Sunshine Daze who played around the band and finished the night on a high. The traditional fish ‘n’ chip van went down a treat, along with the sparklers, teepee with log fire and s’mores to toast on the fire. We didn’t want the day to end. “For me, my most memorable moment was our first dance. It felt so intimate even though we were being watched and snapped. We sang the words to each other and thinking about it just makes smile.” Kirsty “My favourite moment of the day was seeing Kirsty walk into the church. I was really anxious before that as she was running a bit late, but then the music finally started playing and when I saw her I just thought she looked stunning. Her dress was very different to what I’d imagined but was far better - she looked beautiful.” Kelvin

Lauren & Andrew

Lauren and Andrew met on an evening in Durham. Lauren was out for a friend’s birthday and Andrew was on an impromptu night out.

Lartington Hall , Teesdale

“Andrew and I had gone to Edinburgh for a weekend break. Andrew proposed in Edinburgh Zoo – it was a hot summer’s day and he chose a secluded spot at the top of a hill which overlooked the city. We wanted a venue exclusive to us, which Lartington Hall offers. After visiting a few lovely venues, Lartington Hall blew us away. It is truly stunning, without being in any way ostentatious. We loved that we could have our full day of celebrations in one venue, yet be married in a beautiful chapel, have our wedding breakfast in the elegant dining room and enjoy our reception in the grand ballroom. We didn’t want to base our wedding on one set colour or theme but the styles we chose throughout edged towards a mixture of rustic, vintage and English country garden. Having made our own ‘His and Hers’ crossword for guests to complete before dinner along with ‘advice for the Bride and Groom’ cards, they made for some very interesting comments! The children had their own ‘Eye Spy’ photograph challenge to complete.

Pinterest and Instagram are amazing for inspiration”

We did a lot of DIY to personalise the day by decorating mason jars for our flowers, spruced up old picture frames and mirrors for our seating chart and menu board, and we created a collage made up of Polaroid snaps of Andrew and I throughout the years. For our favours we filled jars with sweets and paying homage to our Edinburgh Zoo proposal, we spray painted zoo animal figures gold and stuck them to the jar lids.”

Stephanie & Martin Rockliffe Hall, Darlington

Stephanie and Martin’s beautifully stylish wedding at the fivestar Rockliffe Hall was a wonderful occasion which dovetailed perfectly with my style of photography. Stephanie and Martin had been together for ten years. Stephanie first met me when I photographed her Prom at school... and she remembered me when she became engaged and wanted me as her wedding photographer! How cool is that? Stephanie looked effortlessly glamorous in her Mia Sposa dress and her bridesmaid dresses from YAP bridal, and Martin and his groomsmen looked so smart.

We got engaged when I was nineteen and he was twenty-two. Arthur asked my Dad’s permission to marry me on a Sunday afternoon after tea. He said, “Mr Taylor, I just want to ask you a question. I’d like to marry Mary; may I have your permission?” Dad turned and looked at me and smiled, and smiled at Arthur and said, “If you promise to look after her!” We were very close, Dad and I. We had wonderful parents on both sides and were both made to feel very welcome. Arthur would come and meet me after work in Newcastle and we’d go for tea at his Mum’s house, where he’d stand behind my chair, where I was sitting. His Mum said to him, “Arthur, what do you think we’re going to do to Mary? You don’t have to protect her!” It’s the little things. My sister was my chief bridesmaid, and Arthur had his best friend as his best man. We married in St. George’s Church in Gateshead, with a lot of people there, including our ninety-odd year old

grandmothers! Our reception was in the church hall next door, and my Mother catered, as we still had rationing until 1953, and you still bought things with coupons. When it came to my dress, we thought about trying to get some fabric to make one, but I had heard a friend was wanting to sell her wedding dress. I went and tried it on - it was more a cream than a white - and bought a new veil to go with it. Arthur bought me my pearls. Following our wedding in 1950, we lived in Newcastle, where the first of our two sons was born. We moved to Newcastle for work, but it broke my heart leaving, and I just didn’t settle in the area, so in 1956 we moved to Newton Aycliffe, and we still have the same house now. I did keep a horseshoe from our wedding, but over the years it got damaged; however I have all the photographs and all the letters he sent to me from the 1940’s! Editorial: Kim West

Mary & Arthur Mary and Arthur were married on 25th March 1950, after meeting at a Dance Academy run by Arthur’s friends. Here, Mary tells the story of their courtship and wedding. “We met in 1945 at a Dance Academy that belonged to friends of Arthur. My sister was going to dancing lessons, and Mum had encouraged me to go along as I was very nervous at dances, I didn’t have the confidence - I was only sixteen and a half.

66

Arthur was a Flight Sergeant in the RAF. We courted for five years, and often went to dances, and to the pictures. We once stood for an hour and a half to see ‘A Matter of Life and Death’, as Arthur had written to me to tell me about it; he’d seen it on his base. Arthur wrote to me every day – sometimes twice. He’d send a brief note to say he was going flying, then another when he returned; “got back safe, love you.” We were, and are still, very close. I’ve still got all those letters, from the beginning, when we met in 1945. I keep them all in date order at home.

Marriage Laws & Legalities

The Elopement Wedding and Event Planner Kirstin Halstead shares the photographs from her elopement and talks to us about the practicalities of eloping. Ash and I had been together only a matter of months when he proposed to me and suggested eloping to Nashville, Tennessee. We both have a shared passion for America so I just knew this was going to be a seriously fun wedding adventure. We decided to elope because there is something about it that is really romantic and exciting and we don’t regret one second. It was the best day of our lives! If you have been thinking about eloping but aren’t quite sure whether to bite the bullet and go for it, I hope the following tips will help you decide if it is the right choice.

Family & Friends Consider what is very important to you, if you can’t live with the fact that eloping may upset some of your family and friends then don’t elope. Even though elopements are traditionally supposed to be secret, we told our loved ones that we would be eloping in advance to minimize upset and help them feel more involved. We also took the time to explain to family and friends why we had chosen to elope and that it wasn’t that we loved them any less. If you do feel like eloping is something that you both really want to do, then go for it and don’t look back, we didn’t.

Make sure you understand the marriage laws and legalities in the location you want to get married. The last thing you want to do is fly to the destination of your dreams and not be able to get legally married. The legalities and requirements are different in each city, state and country. Contact the local embassy and ensure you make any appointments necessary in advance and get a marriage license.

Location When choosing the destination for your elopement, there are so many beautiful locations around the world. Think about somewhere close to your hearts, somewhere you love or have always wanted to visit. Consider the time of year, weather, logistics of travel and exchange rate.

Wedding Planner & Suppliers Plan ahead like you would any other wedding, suppliers get booked up in advance abroad too. I would always recommend booking a wedding planner to help with the planning of your elopement. They can also help with sourcing top local suppliers and help you check over those marriage laws and legalities.

Even though elopements generally aren’t too costly, it doesn’t mean you can’t have THE dress, a 5 tier cake, sleek wedding transport and a rocking band. You can still book everything you would have done back home, just on a smaller scale. Remember this is your dream wedding day!

A Post Wedding Party You might decide to throw a post wedding party when you return from your honeymoon. This can be as laid back or lavish as you want it to be. We chose to go out for dinner with loved ones to mark the occasion as soon as we returned, we shared the polaroid’s we had our photographer take and just took a moment to tell everyone how much they meant to us for supporting our marriage and decision to elope.

Final comments Remember eloping isn’t for everyone, you need to think your decision through together and weigh up the pro’s and con’s. Are you doing it for the right reasons? Eloping was right for us and we wouldn’t change a thing about it. I thought I would feel guilty on the day but I didn’t, my face ached from all of the laughter and smiles I was sharing with my new husband. It totally rocked! This cake takes a seaside theme with beautiful ocean teal, white and gold. 2. This cake has delicate pastel shades running through the design to match the bridesmaids. 3. Modern vintage - teacups are still here to stay Yes teacups are still a big trend and are set to stay for a bit longer as I have many bookings for this type of cake with sugar teacups and handpainted details, mix up with bunting and sugar flowers.

4. Subtle Whimsical A strong theme, like Alice in Wonderland but keeping it more subtle in ivory and white and subtle hints of the theme, this beautiful wedding cake is feminine, whimsical and pretty with floating ruffle flowers and gold touches. 5. Secret Garden Be magical, sugar wild flowers and a fairytale wedding, a secret door to enchant your guests and muted pastel shades of soft gold and dusky pinks. 6. 1 Think about your venue – Always take into consideration your surroundings before thinking about dressing your venues with flowers. 2 Budget – Work out a budget for floral décor and confirm this with your florist from the initial consultation. This will mean your expectations will be managed and they will work with you to create something beautiful on budget. Flowers are expensive so it is important that the budget is set. 3 Do your research – Look into which flowers will be in season when you get married. Choosing out of season flowers can be expensive.

5 Create a moodboard – Take the time to look in magazines, books, Instagram and Pinterest for flower décor styles you love. Then create a moodboard for your florist, have fun with it and be flexible. 6 Choose local – Use local flowers, so many florists now celebrate using made-in-England flowers freshly grown in their gardens. All about the Flowers If you love flowers just as much as I do then you are going to get really excited about this beautiful creative part of the wedding planning process. Kirstin Halstead shares her top ten flower tips to give you a head start.

4 Choosing the right style of florist – Look through florists’ portfolios and social media platforms before booking an appointment. You don’t want to waste yours or the florists time if they can’t provide the style or aesthetic you are looking for.

8 Reuse – Look to reuse any flowers from your ceremony at your reception venue. 9 Get personal – Use flowers that have meaning and bring back happy memories for you, don’t just go off colour and what is most popular. 10 Vessels – Get creative with your flower vessels and dress extra items for a creative luxury feel. Adorn bookcases, crates, dressers, chairs, trees and walls with flowers to create a wow factor. Editorial: Kirstin Halstead

Don’t get too hung up on small details. For example; if your lip colour looks great then roll with it. It doesn’t have to be exactly the same colour as the roses in your Bouquet. Of course you want to look and feel your best, and you want hubby to be blown off his feet when he’s see’s you walking down the aisle but he’s marrying you because he loves you and doesn’t care that you’ve not quite managed to loose that last 3lb or that the £60 lash serum hasn’t given you luscious long lashes it promised. Stay focused on things that really matter. A calm, relaxed, and happy bride radiates beauty from within. Tell us your favourite beauty quote? ‘The most beautiful thing a woman can wear is confidence’

Where do you get your inspiration from? What is your make-up style? My inspiration comes from everywhere! Looking back at makeup throughout the ages is certainly a favourite of mine. I loved the 1920s through to the 1950s in particular, and love the old Hollywood stars such as Audrey Hepburn, Greta Garbo and of course Marilyn Monroe. I am also inspired by the work of other make-up artists such as Charlotte Tilbury, Lisa Eldridge and Hung Vanngo. My make-up style is beautifying and pretty, making the most of each client’s features, rather than a one-sizefits-all approach. I love to showcase amazing features and enhance natural beauty.

I’m really pleased to see that dewy skin is still on trend going forward. I also love the idea of a bold red or dark berry lip with little makeup elsewhere to really make a statement; it’s very modern and cool. What make-up items shouldn’t we leave home without?

Glory Days was founded by Hayley Claire Neil - dressmaker, costume designer and vintage devotee. Having developed a passion for fashion history and design at an early age, Hayley designed, sewed, sketched and embroidered her way through school, gained a degree in costume design at the Edinburgh College of Art and went on to work as a freelance costume designer, maker, and assistant in the enchanting realms of theatre and film. Following an epiphany which struck whilst on a depressingly uninspiring shopping trip to help find wedding dresses for her sister, Hayley made her dreams a reality and opened the boutique in York in March 2012. Taking the name ‘Glory Days’ from the Pulp song she herself walked down the aisle to on her wedding day, she set out with a wish to offer an alternative choice of dress for the off-the-beaten-track bride. I’m often inspired by bygone styles of the 20th century, but also nature, music, and modern-day couture catwalks. Fabrics inspire me too, and chic simple lines and graceful cuts which work with the female body rather than against it.

What tips do you have for brides when choosing a dress? I think having an open mind is one of the most important things. Brides do tend to have a good idea of what suits them but it’s also good to try on a few wild-card options as you never know what might surprise you! Also don’t let anyone convince you that if you’re a certain shape or size then certain dress styles are to be avoided at all costs; it breaks my heart when brides come to the boutique saying someone has told them that they shouldn’t wear empire line/high necked/low backed gowns because of this, or to avoid satin because it ‘shows everything’. You never know until you try something. Do you have a particular style? Someone recently commented that my Rolling In Roses Instagram feed has quite a dusky moody feel for a bridal designer, and I guess that’s true! I think there will always be a slightly atmospheric rebellious element to my work, but overall I’d describe it as historical nostalgia fused with modern romance. Give me a stylish one liner/ statement that you would pin on your wall? ‘Don’t tell me who to be. I’ll wear what I want to wear.’

Bex and her team design made-to-measure bespoke bridal gowns and also provide a specialist customization and repair service for vintage gowns. Bex offers a wide range of styles to suit every client’s budget and theme. Bex is particularly known for her vintage and period styled creations. Tell us about your background in fashion and design? I come from a family of seamstresses and knitters. The female line of my family tree traces back with all the women in the fabric trade and all the males as engineers.  I used to sit on the floor picking up my mum’s scraps and making them into dolls clothes and the family business was a department store so I was always in front of amazing clothes and in-house seamstresses. It is no wonder I now have my own mini emporium that reminds me of those happy childhood hours. What made you decide to design wedding dresses? My first wedding dress was for my mother-in-law when she remarried about 12 years ago. I’ve never looked back. I sometimes am stunned to

Kate Fearnley Kate Fearnley is a fashion designer who’s bespoke designs and beautiful women’s clothing has been spotted on celebrities such as Alexandra Burke, Girls Aloud, The Saturday’s and many more. In 2010 she won Cosmopolitans Fashion Entrepreneur Award and this year Kate has launched her first official bridal collection.

find I’m now an award winning dress designer with a job I love. What inspires your designs? I’m inspired by historical costumes, paintings, especially Pre-Raphaelite, and museums and I’m a sucker for a period drama. Do you have a particular style? I’m known for my vintage styling; however, my clients say I’m just like a magician who can get into their head and magic up the dress they were dreaming of, whatever that might be, from a Victorian ballgown to a medieval fairy or a 50s rock chick.

Tell us about your background in fashion and design? I come from a very creative family having careers in fashion design, tailoring and photography which naturally influenced me as a child. I set up the brand Kate Fearnley in 2002 which was an independent wholesale occasion wear womenswear label selling to independent boutiques throughout UK, Europe and as far as Dubai.

Do you follow trends? I’ve never particularly been a trend follower; I tend to set my own based on what suits me and my clients. Luckily at the moment the fashion for vintage and period styling fits with my ethos perfectly and some styles I have been designing for years, like capes, bardot necklines and belts, have come into vogue, so for once I feel like a trendsetter myself.

In 2006 I opened the boutique in Middlesbrough offering a made-tomeasure service.

What made you decide to design wedding dresses? It was a natural progression to then develop the occasion wear brand into bridal wear. I started with bridesmaids to test the water and as that had such a fantastic reaction we started to design and create some wedding dresses. We are now about to launch our first official bridal collection. Tell us about your favourite design or designs? My favourites are the blush toned bridal dresses from the new collection with the heavy beaded lace over lay. It is so delicate yet has this intense heavy detailing that feels so luxurious and special. What tips do you have for brides when choosing a dress? Try styles that you wouldn’t normally go for as I find a lot of the times a bride comes in with one idea and ends up with something completely different. Colour and tone is key to suit each person and it is important that you chose the right shade for your skin. Never rule styles out when you are having it made to measure as the customers proportion and height will be factored in to a design which you wouldn’t necessarily get if you buy off the peg. Do brides need to be thinking about their bridal hairstyle at an early stage of the planning process when choosing their dress? Katie: Definitely, it’s a complete look! You need to know what the dress is like to style the hair. For example, if a bride is considering having her hair down but the dress has amazing detail at the back you won’t get the full effect.

Which hair styling products do you use and love on your brides? Katie: Backcombing dust is a product we use on almost every bride in both up and down looks. It helps give the hair structure and gives it a stronger hold to last all day. We generally use lighter hairsprays throughout styling which enables you to still work with the hair but always finish off with Session Label 3 Strong Hold Hairspray. Tell me what is your personal favourite bridal hair look? Katie: My personal favourite bridal look is a soft-textured up-do for an elegant look. What hair trends do you predict will be popular for 2017? Katie: Bridal hair trends are so mixed right now, with everyone wanting something new and different, but plaits are definitely

a big trend and I can see them being an even bigger trend next year. Tell us why it is important to have a prewedding consultation? Amelia: We always ask our brides to have a trial beforehand as we like to know exactly what they want and want them to feel comfortable in whichever style they are having as it is their big day and so there is no extra stress. Trials also ensure we know the bride’s hair and how best to prep and style the hair to last throughout the day and night. What is your favourite celebrity bridal look? Katie: Millie Mackintosh’s wedding hair was a nice, relaxed up-do which is a rare celebrity look.

TipiChic & LoveDub Cars

Run by James and Rachel from their beautiful home in Middleton St George, TipiChic and LoveDub Cars are both businesses born out of passion. They have both gone from strength to strength, and not only do they run the business professionally and efficiently, they also run it with with genuine excitement and love every day. “Following our infamous pub night ten years ago where we set our hearts on offering a good wedding car service,” James says, “research began in earnest the next day, only to find more than enough classic car companies to feel the market was becoming saturated. We looked for a point of difference, and that’s when we got our first VW Beetle in white – and the business was born. We wanted to provide something unique, something unusual and not seen before. We rode the crest of the big vintage revolution that was just starting to gather steam, taking enough bookings and building enough to be able to get cars two, three and four; by year five we had three camper vans added to the fold. The business is really built around personality – we generally operate with stylishly-dressed female drivers who have that extra attention to detail – they can help sort a bride’s dress before she goes into church, or sort Dad’s buttonhole, almost like an honorary bridesmaid. All of these small touches go a long way. The cars and campers are beautifully refurbished, and really are like family!

“Our tipis can be hired individually for 60-65 people, or joined together for larger parties – two tipis together can hold around 130. They’re fully staffed with a full bar (including draught!) and are so individual! We can provide a chill-out tipi for people to relax, fire pits, and the setup really is up to the couple; perhaps they want long trestle tables and benches for a relaxed feel, or round tables for eight. We’re gathering styling and props all the time. We provide oodles of gorgeous lighting, from twinkling fairy lights to spotlights, to really create an atmosphere, and bunting is available. Our aim is to keep it uncomplicated, and I think that reflects in our pricing. It’s not “hire from…”, it’s a set price. It takes the surprise out of the costing, and means couples don’t have to hold back. My only question at the start is about guest numbers, and from there, the creative fun starts! Generally, the tipi is yours for the weekend – for a Saturday wedding, we’ll begin setting up on a Thursday. Friday is free for decorating and a handover to the couple, showing them how everything works. Saturday is the big day, and Sunday is also part of the package – perhaps they want to host a barbecue at their venue as a wind-down from the excitement of the day before, or to say goodbye to people who’ve travelled to see them.” “Our aim is to help couples have an awesome wedding. From vintage VDubs to a relaxed tipi wedding, we want to the couple to feel individual, cool, and most of all, taken care of.”

The Arches Country House An idyllic hidden gem of a location for your wedding day. Set amongst the Hummersea Cliffs with breathtaking views of the North Yorkshire Coastline, The Arches Country House is an independent, family owned and run accommodation located close to Saltburn. “We pride ourselves on our relaxed and informal atmosphere and we only offer exclusive use of our venue”. We caught up with Yvonne and Stan Smith who were married at The Arches in April 2016 to find out why they fell in love with the venue. “The minute we walked into The Arches we knew it was the place for our wedding, we felt so relaxed. We fell in love with the surroundings, the ambiance of the place, the exposed beams, and the whole rustic-look, so full of character!

“Our guests could not praise the venue enough. The staff were so helpful, constantly checking everyone had what they needed. The food was outstanding and everyone loved the ambiance of the place. We would highly recommend The Arches Country House, for the outstanding service they provided. Each member of staff worked so hard to make our wedding day so special. The day was amazing from start to finish. We also pre-booked all of the hotel rooms to accommodate our family and friends and they thoroughly enjoyed their stay.” To find out more about weddings at The Arches Country House, visit www.thearchesweddings.co.uk or call 01287 677 512.

“We chose a rustic theme. We decorated the tables with wooden logs and jars of flowers as centrepieces; fir cones for name places and the table names were wild flowers. Our wedding cake was a cheese stack, which was decorated with fruit and wooden mice.” “We chose a two-meat Carvery as our Wedding Breakfast, along with a variety of desserts. All of the staff were amazing and they took great care in catering for our guests with special dietary requirements.”

Valerie Rose

Rosewood Co

Creative mum and daughter Valerie and Megan combine their eye for beautiful things with design skill and natural inspiration into their own independent wedding businesses. Entwining their own Garden of Eden with ideas from interior landscapes, their personal service is as individual as the couples they work with… Valerie, for florist Valerie Rose I love spending time in my garden, growing my own flowers and reading endless interior design magazines that help inspire my creativity.

Megan, for bespoke stationers Rosewood Co. My inspiration comes from various avenues in interior design, landscapes, textures and my Mum’s beautiful garden. It’s like a little Eden, we love spending time there bouncing ideas off each other. My latest inspiration are washes and gilt - I’m currently working with a lot of mix media such as watercolour and gold leaf. I’m also finding personal illustrations are currently popular, which for me is perfect, as I love nothing more than sketching away!

The ‘wild’ and the ‘home grown’ meadow style are very popular at the moment, and are much less structured than traditional bouquets and arrangements. Blush and nude tones also still continue to be a favourite for colour themes – it’s feminine yet relaxed.

Ideas and first steps into designing starts in my little studio where I invite my couples to pop in for a chat. I set out my collection and they bring along their own ideas. I love to know their thought process, theme and how they envisage their big day. Discussing colour, style and trims, together we create their stationery suite.

When working with new couples, I’ll invite them to my home, where I base the office, and show them examples of arrangements and my portfolio of work. Together we discuss colours, seasonal flowers and styles which are then tailored to each couple.

I’m most proud of an illustration I did of my clients beloved pooch Coco - she told me she cried when she saw it. For me that is the most rewarding part of my job, I like to make my clients stationery personal to them. Editorial: Kim West

The Forest of Enchantment

When photographer Lissa Alexandra sent us this alternative bridal shoot, we were fixated. The drama of the moody setting and mysterious, edgy styling reminded us of something from the likes of Game of Thrones. This is the ultimate inspiration for a woodland wedding with touch of drama! Lissa says, “In the heart of the Yorkshire Dales lies a hidden treasure of mystery and beauty called the Druid’s Temple. Situated in the grounds of the Swinton Park estate, laid in the woods on a hill overlooking a reservoir. Down the track from the woods is a farm, now turned into a visitor centre with accommodation called The Bivouac. They offer wedding ceremonies next to the temple and around the grounds. I’ve shot a few weddings there now and it’s my favourite outdoor venue; there’s an indescribable energy to the place. Megan wanted to create some unique head dresses, something a bit edgy so she could match the style with some eye-catching make-up. The flowers were created by Jo from Twisted Willow who followed the brief for the two individual looks, using blood red roses offset by rich green ivy leaves and complemented with pheasant feathers as the estate is used for hunting parties. With the photography I wanted the shoot to really highlight the stunning colours in Megan’s head dresses and make-up. The richness of the shades had to come through in the images so I created a unique filter to add in post processing.” Photography: Lissa Alexandra Photography | Location: The Bivouac, Swinton Park Estate | Hair & Make-up: Megan Green Dresses: Little Pearl Bridal Boutique | Flowers: Twisted Willow

Blackwell’s Butchers

Blackwell’s Butchers has always had a cult following of its own. Famed not only for its meats, the service and artisan lines from local producers also set it worlds apart from your everyday village butcher shop. Having provided a wedding catering service for a number of years, the acquisition of their cool Street Food Van brings a new and exciting concept to their repertoire. With the ability to serve a tailored menu directly to your guests from the van, Blackwell’s are offering a quality service and hearty, rustic food, with that added touch of awesome. I met with Anna to discuss their exciting new idea. “The Street Food Van was born out of necessity. For years we’d cater for events with barbecues, but we realised that a van could really benefit us – we wouldn’t have to be setting up for hours on end, we could cook out of the van in a much quicker time. Research pointed us towards a company in Preston who supply and customise these amazing vans. It was designed to perfectly match our requirements. “We provide catering menus specifically for the street kitchen – we run Street Food Saturdays, where the van is parked outside the shop, serving different foods and flavours from around the world. Our menus are constantly developing, and we’re very open

to working with a couple to achieve their perfect wedding menu. Pie and peas is currently really popular – it used to be a bit oldfashioned, but it’s seen as very retro and cool now, and is proving really popular!”

The Groom Guide Fashion, DIY, Travel and more.

“When working with a new couple I always like to meet them, get an idea of what they’re looking for, and provide them with menus. Some couples want a really formal and traditional service, but we’re more rustic and relaxed. We keep in contact on the run up to the big day, and are always available to help with selections. We also have a handy network of suppliers we work with. The couples who come to us are usually the couples not having a traditional hotel wedding, so they’re needing to sort their own furniture, catering and supplies. From glassware to pop-up bars to artisan cheese-wheel cakes (we also offer a pork pie wedding cake!), if we can help, we will! Generally we can cater for around 150 but we’re always flexible.” “We’re increasing our presence at Wedding Fairs with our Street Food Van, so come and sample some food - we’re really looking forward to meeting you!”

How to Tie a Bow Tie Left to tie your own bow tie on the Big Day? YouTube just not helping? Check this out – practice makes perfect!

Step One Start with the bow tie lying with the fancy side up. Adjust so right side is shorter than the left. The left end is A and the end on the right, we’ll call B. Step Two Move A to the right side, across B. Step Three Bring A under B and up through the neck loop. Step Four At the joint, fold B towards the right and then towards the left to create a the bow shape. Step Five Bring A straight down over the middle of the bow shape that was made with B. The Stylish Gent

Step Six Fold A back towards the chest and pinch the fold. Step Seven Push the pinched end (A) through the loop behind B. Step Eight Pull on the folded parts of the bow to tighten. Adjust until suave.

How to Fold a Pocket Square Don’t just stuff it in your top pocket any-old-how. James Bond wouldn’t do that.

Step One Start out by laying the pocket square on a flat surface. Step Two Fold one corner in so that you get two overlapping triangles (they don’t want to line up exactly, giving you two points at the tip). Step Three Fold one side of the triangle in to the middle.

Photography: Keith Moss Photography Venue: Grinkle Park Hotel Suits: Bakers Tailoring Florist: Flowermaiden Models: Tyne Tees Models

Step Four Do the same on the opposite side. You could also try a simple “fold in half, fold in half again” for a squared look – make sure the rounded edge is poking out, not the pocket square edges. For a neater look, follow the steps above but make sure the triangle tips like flat on each other in Step Two, so you only have one point. Finally, once you’re dressed, check your suit, and the other lads. Fluff free? Tie straight? Shoes polished? Then you’re good to go.

Ushers & Groomsmen Asked your mates to be your ushers, or have you been asked, and to be honest…you don’t really know what the role entails? More than just showing up in a new suit, the Groom’s back-up-boys do actually have a hand in the day running smoothly. From getting a decent breakfast (and perhaps some Dutch Courage) down the Groom to guiding the Bride’s one hundred year old granny to her pew, you’ll be relied upon to help out. Don’t worry however – if you’re not doing a speech, you can relax as soon as the happy couple say “I do”.

Responsibilities • The best bit – The Stag Do! From Lads on Tour to an active, muddy and wet adventure weekend, you’re supposed to be sending your buddy off to married life with some epic memories, so put some graft in and think of something cool. Food, drinks, and absolutely no strip joints (she won’t thank you for it). Try www.chillisauce.co.uk for some ideas – they even have a really easy app. Select where you want to go, share it via the app with the lads, and let them look after the boring stuff.

Dandy Threads Fashion for the gentleman about town who are looking for something with style & flair

• Attend all of the pre-wedding activities – you might have an engagement party, or wedding rehearsal to attend. Be on time and behave. Don’t stress the B&G out any more than they might already be. A rehearsal will be at the venue of the ceremony, and you’ll be told where you need to be and if you need to say anything or do anything specific. • On the actual day, you might be staying over at the Groom’s house or a hotel. If you’re not and you’re meeting the Groom on the morning, make sure you’re organised. Bag packed the night before, everything double checked. Got your cufflinks? Have you sorted out a card and gift for the couple? Is it wrapped and written? If not – do it! Perhaps all the Ushers can club together with cash and ideas. • Get some cash out for drinks. The Groom won’t be buying any.

• You might need to usher guests to their seats at the ceremony – hence the name. Traditionally, guests of the Bride sit on the left, and guests of the Groom sit on the right. Ideally, you’re supposed to take the lady’s arm and direct her, and her partner will follow, but that’s likely to be a bit awkward. Just be polite, and pay particular attention to elderly guests or those with disabilities. You’ll likely be travelling with the Groom so will be there early anyway, but if not, 45 minutes before the ceremony is a good marker. • Make sure you know where the reception is afterwards and be prepared to offer directions. • Be prepared that you might need to link arms with the Bridesmaids whilst entering and exiting the ceremony, or dance with them at the reception/after the first dance. Make sure your Mrs is aware of this! • It’s quite a nice tradition to decorate the room where the married couple are staying that night. Get together with the Bridesmaids for this – keep it clean, and don’t mess with their stuff – they’re probably packed for the honeymoon! • Enjoy the reception, but don’t go over the top – everyone likes a few drinks, but table dancing and fountain swimming won’t endear you to the new couple’s families! • Lastly, just be organised. Think ahead. Pack in advance. Know your role. Editorial: Kim West

The Light Shack

Dave O’Donnell is one of those beachy, relaxed, creative types that, shortly after meeting him, makes you decide you want his lifestyle. Tucked away in a suite of studios rented out to fellow artisans of various crafts, passion for his work pours out of him, and he spends his days working out amazing new concepts for hand crafted illuminated retro and rusted signage for wedding venues, businesses, hip food joints, cocktail bars and the like through his company The Light Shack. I met him at his studio – a stone’s throw from the coast at Saltburn, to chat about why he does what he does, where his inspiration comes from, and how he can absolutely transform your wedding backdrop in the most personalised way. “I’ve always been interested in light and its various forms and the moods it can create. My background has always been in graphic design, which I studied at college, and still keep my hand in by designing for a friends’ business. I have a lot of experience with lettering and typography, so while I worked in retail in London for ten years, I was always being drawn back to design, and always kept some connection with it. With the desire to return back to my coastal roots at home, I made the move, and got started. Beginning with accent lamps and illuminated props, I began to merge into the wedding scene.

The finished look can really vary, with wedding hire props, the finish has always traditionally very clean, white and polished but with rustic barn style venues becoming so popular rusted metals and reclaimed wood is in demand as people opt for a more vintage look. I try not to do too much with it, as it already has character – building sites can’t wait for you to take it away! I’ll plane the wood a little and apply a lacquer, staying away from staining. I really like to think outside the box with my designs.

There are men who make history There are men who change the world And there are men like me That simply find the right girl Brad Paisley

I think my work is something unusual and a talking point, a great feature for venues to offer their couples, and also great for the married couple to keep at home, if they come to me directly. Your own initials in 4ft tall lights would make one hell of a garden feature!” Editorial: Kim West

I now design and fabricate directly to businesses and prop hire companies but, I also make interior pieces and stylish accent lights for the home. Image and Back Cover Image by Natalie Pluck Photography
