PUBLISHER’S NOTE
JOIN ME AT 6:20 Many of us have felt God calling us to do something in our lives at one point or another, but have we really, truly listened? Acting on these subtle messages is often easier said than done. There’s always an excuse not to follow up or follow through — I don’t have enough time, it’s too hard, what would people think? “A Higher Calling” (page 17) tells the stories of four brave women who have heard God’s calling loud and clear, and weren’t afraid to act on it. Each received a message to help people in her own unique way, and that’s what makes each woman’s testimony so interesting. These stories have motivated and inspired me to begin living my own faith in a more compelling way, by acting on an idea God has been instilling in me for more than a year. I’ve told only a few family members about it because I’m finding that it’s amazingly hard to put myself out there. But here goes. It’s my personal feeling that America could be a much more prayerful nation than it is. I know that we do pray, but God is calling me to find a way to help us pray together. I was recently talking to my mom about this notion, and she told me that when she was growing up on a farm in Minnesota, all the farmers prayed at 6 a.m. and 6 p.m. I wondered why we couldn’t do this again here and now. Not just farmers, but everyone. Matthew 18:20 tells us, “For where two or three gather in my name, there am I with them.” So here’s what I propose — the 6:20 Project. Set your phone alarm for 6:20 p.m. nightly, and take a few moments to join me in praying for peace around the world. “I pray for God to put peace and understanding in the hearts of everyone, especially those filled with hate. I pray for God to place love in the hearts of the leaders of all nations, and to keep that love at the forefront of all the decisions they make. I pray for a faithful nation that looks toward God first in all actions great or small. In the Lord’s name I pray, amen.” Here’s wishing all my readers a new year full of peace, love and joy.

EXPERT ADVICE Q+A
Healthy gums, healthy heart?
How good periodontic care affects your cardiovascular health Implant Dentistry and Periodontics 9865 E. 116th St. Suite 100 Fishers, IN 46037 8801 N. Meridian Suite 103 Indianapolis, IN 46260 Call 317-842-2273 and mention Kit Magazine to schedule a consultation or to receive more information indyimplants.com
Q A
What is periodontics, and how is it different from standard dentistry?
Q A
What does a periodontist do exactly?
Periodontics involves the specialization of the structures surrounding the teeth, where standard dentistry traditionally involves focusing on the teeth themselves and preventing decay.
A periodontist is a dentist who specializes in the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of periodontal disease, and in the placement of dental implants. Periodontists are also experts in the treatment of oral inflammation. They’re familiar with the latest techniques for diagnosing and treating periodontal disease, and are also trained in cosmetic periodontal procedures.
Q
How exactly does improving your periodontic health reduce risks for heart disease?
A
Cardiovascular health involves many parallels to mouth health at the molecular level. Proteins that can be measured via a simple blood test can identify if there are high levels of inflammation in the body. Thus, decreasing the inflammation in the mouth is going to improve the body’s ability to fight inflammation elsewhere. Periodontitis is chronic inflammation, which is a state in which the body’s nonspecific immune system is revved up, lowering energy and increasing susceptibility to other diseases. People feel healthier and have more energy after periodontic treatment.
Q A
What other health issues can be affected by periodontic health?
For diseases like diabetes we see improvement in glucose levels after periodontal treatment. Meanwhile, diabetics are ADVERTORIAL
three times more likely to have periodontal disease because of their compromised healing potential. Studies show patients with arthritis (inflammation of the joints) have a higher incidence of periodontal disease. Other studies have shown that periodontal treatment decreases arthritis parameters such as pain and swollen, tender joints.
Q A
What can women do to improve their periodontic health?
Following through with recommended treatment is the best way to improve periodontal health. Treatment involves removing bacteria that are not reachable with any home remedies. Once healthy, women can see their dentist or periodontist for regular cleaning intervals. Home care is the second biggest factor in improving periodontal health. Flossing is just as important as brushing, because it disrupts the biofilm of plaque between the teeth and below the gumline where the brush can’t reach. Brushing and flossing twice a day with good technique will help keep your teeth healthy for a lifetime.
Q A
How do I know if I have a periodontic issue? Are there symptoms I should look for?
Q A
What questions should I ask my dentist or periodontist?
Bad breath or red color while spitting in the sink after brushing are the most common signs. Red tender gums are a clear indicator of inflammation. Also, if your gums have receded to the point that the root shows, you may have gum disease.
Many moderate to high-risk patients are often co-managed between the dentist and periodontist. Patents should ask, would my risk for decay and periodontal disease be lowered by being co-managed?

MICHELLE CORRAO ASSISTANT DIRECTOR, PREVAIL On a fateful September night in 1996, Michelle Corrao’s life changed forever. Abducted, assaulted and stuffed into the trunk of her own car, Corrao was preparing herself for the worst when an off-duty police detective noticed her assailants acting strangely and, ultimately, wound up saving her life. Now, Corrao uses her experience to inspire other victims of crime through her work with Prevail, a non-profit Hamilton County victim awareness and support program that partners with local law enforcement, prosecution, health care facilities, faith-based communities, schools and counselors. Last year, Prevail worked with more than 2,500 victims — women, men and children. “Being a victim is such an isolated, alone feeling,” Corrao says. “It takes so much courage just to walk through our door. We make sure everyone who comes into our office is safe. We meet them wherever they are, and whatever their journey looks like, we walk through it with them.”
“It was definitely a God thing,” she says. “As I was reading the paper, I saw there was a crime victims group five minutes away from me. I really connected with the people in that group.” Passionate about Prevail’s mission, Corrao works mainly to connect the agency to the Hamilton County community. She also focuses on public speaking and sexual assault/domestic violence prevention and education. “I am a victim of assault,” she says. “Talking about it makes you vulnerable, and it’s scary. But the more I did it, the more I realized that people need to hear what I had to say and connect with it. That’s what keeps me going — seeing the hope in other people.” Corrao remains devout in her faith. “I hope and pray my faith continues to get stronger every day,” she says. “Many more good things have come out of my assault than bad — mostly, the people God’s placed in my life to get me through it.”
Corrao’s been part of Prevail for 15 years and worked in a number of different capacities. She credits God with leading her to the organization in the first place.
TRACY LINE AUTHOR, FREELANCE WRITER Nearly two decades ago, when her family purchased its first computer, Tracy Line launched her writing career by composing essays on motherhood and assignments for local publications. “I’d always wanted to write a book, but it’s such an overwhelming undertaking and deciding what to write often stopped me cold,” she says. In 2013, Line’s book finally began to take shape. She started the project intending to write about miracles, interviewing 20 people across the country, but she wasn’t happy with the way the actual writing was going. After switching gears and free-writing several pieces on faith, her direction became clearer. Chasing God: Finding Faith From the Outside Looking In is the end result, a collection of Line’s personal essays chronicling her own faith walk. “I love to write; it fills me with great joy, but for a long time, I just thought of it as something fun to do,” she says. “I took a spiritual-gifts inventory and realized my
gifts were communication and encouragement. It hit me that my writing ability is a gift from God, and maybe He wanted me to use this gift in a way that would honor Him.” Once the book got going, Line felt God’s hand guiding her all the way. “It’s hard to explain — everything just came so easy and the pieces just lined up to make it happen,” she explains. “The entire process has been a blessing.” Line grew up attending church inconsistently, but has always considered herself a spiritual person. Like many, she’s struggled with her faith at times and occasionally questioned her beliefs. As an adult, the idea of being part of a church community has gained greater importance to her. Line, her husband and their three daughters have now been members of Geist Christian Church for 10 years. “I think as humans, our pride often gets in the way of our relationship with God,” she says. “For me, when I come to Him with a pure heart and no agenda, that’s when I truly feel His love.”
MARTI STARKEY ATTORNEY, AUTHOR
Marti Starkey has always loved to write, but after earning a college degree in communications/journalism, she decided instead to pursue a career in law. “The practice of law requires all kinds of writing,” she says. “In my practice, one of the best gifts I can give to my clients is to simplify the law in explaining it and making it understandable for them.” Starkey has worked in trust and estate law for more than three decades and is an equity partner at the firm of Harrison & Moberly LLP. But within the past eight years, she’s found herself penning articles of encouragement and faith. The idea of writing a book is something that had been in her head and heart for nearly 20 years before she finally sat down to do it. “It was clear to me that someday, before I passed from this life, I was to share what the Lord had shown me regarding obedience,” she says. “It was as clear as anything I had ever felt, and I had peace about being called to do it. I didn’t know if anyone would even read the book; all I knew was that I was to write it.”
The Blessing of Obedience came together by way of small articles written over the course of three or four years. After Starkey’s father passed away in 2010, she felt that the time was right to get serious about the project. “When I started to write, it flowed out of me so quickly, my fingers could hardly keep up,” she says. “Although I’d been writing the book in my mind for those decades, the actual majority of putting it on paper happened in a two-week period. It was one of the most amazing experiences of my life.” The publishing process moved along equally quickly. Pat Kieffner at IBJ Publishing told Starkey she’d never seen a book published so fast. Starkey’s currently at work on a second book, and continuing to live her own faith. “I think only God knows our hearts,” she says. “The time I set aside each morning to pray and read the Bible is the most important aspect of my day.”
CAROLEE VANATTA GARDEN OF HOPE
Carolee Vanatta believes in growing her faith. Literally. Several years ago after touring Indianapolis’ Wheeler Mission, Vanatta found herself “called” to make some sort of personal contribution to the organization. “There was lots of canned and boxed food; it’s harder for these organizations to get fresh produce,” she says. “Any amount is beneficial to them. The garden wasn’t my idea — I feel like it was God’s plan.” A discussion with friends led Vanatta to plan a garden with the intention of donating all the produce she was able to grow. The friends gave her free run of a 1-acre plot they own near the Westfield/Zionsville border for a “Garden of Hope,” and others pitched in to help. The result? Hundreds of pounds of fresh vegetables — all gifted to Wheeler Mission. Last year, Vanatta’s 82-year-old father took over the gardening duties, and the produce was donated in Boone County through the Zionsville Presbyterian Church food bank and other outlets.
“I have a friendship with a woman who owns a greenhouse,” Vanatta says. “She had some plants to give me, but the labels had all been taken off, so we didn’t know exactly what we were growing. We ended up with a bumper crop of peppers and tomatoes!” The garden has evolved each year, and Vanatta’s proud that it’s been able to help feed those in need. “For some reason, I was called to put something like this together,” she says. “I figured if we trusted, prayed and kept our purpose in mind, it would flourish. And it has.” Vanatta encourages others to set out an extra plant or two in their own home gardens and give away the output to someone who needs it. And to listen to their inner voices and act upon their own callings. “We’ve all been given different gifts that are revealed to us as we go through life,” she says. “God has gifted me with a heart that feels compassion for the needy. It’s all about figuring out what your gift is, and then doing something with it.”

A natural beauty.. THE BLESSING OF OBEDIENCE BY MARTI STARKEY
Â
For two decades, Marti Starkey felt compelled to write about the difficult and challenging subject of obedience. She tells of how her understanding of obedience has grown and changed as God has allowed her faith to be tested. It is her belief that obedience to God, in and of itself, is a blessing, and perhaps along with peace, is what God intends when He talks about blessing our lives. YOUR
SHAPE Tips + Styling by Beth Divine | Photos by Chris Whonsetler
You know one size doesn't fit all. Make the most of your fabulous figure by focusing on getting the proportions right with our put-into-practice-today tricks for three of the most common shapes. Two cardinal rules for every body type: 1. Wear lighter colors on the areas you want to look larger and darker colors on areas you want to appear smaller. 2. The hourglass shape is the most balanced — and coveted — figure type. Get the look by making your chest and shoulders proportionate to your hips and booty, and then define the waist or area just above the waist. Go figure.

SKIP THE DRIVE-THRU. THESE STOPS LIVE UP TO ALL THE BUZZ. By Amy Lynch
The City of Carmel is known for welcoming and promoting a range of art genres — performing arts at the Palladium; interior design at the Indiana Design Center; and visual, culinary and graphic arts in the Arts & Design District. Now it’s setting its sights on the art of caffeine. Several Carmel restaurants and cafés are dedicated to creating coffee, espresso, lattes and freshly brewed teas that are nothing short of drinkable masterpieces. With that in mind, Carmel introduces the Caffeine Trail, launching in January 2016, as an effort to focus attention on the high-quality gourmet coffees and teas available in our community. The Trail will serve as a guide for tourists and residents to help them locate the most unique, delicious caffeine options in Carmel and the surrounding area. The public can get its first sip of the Carmel Caffeine Trail during the IU Health North Second Saturday Gallery Walk on Jan. 9, 2016, 5-9 p.m., in the Arts & Design District. Kit couldn’t wait to get a sneak peek … we visited three local shops to give readers a preview of what they can expect to find on the new Caffeine Trail.
SoHo Café & Gallery An eclectic café/art gallery hybrid, this aesthetic-minded coffee shop sits just a few feet from the Monon Trail, luring crowds of active customers and creative types with lattes, Maya teas, smoothies, pastries, wraps and paninis. Counter Culture Coffee takes the lead here when it comes to roasting, although SoHo has also worked with Zionsville-based Julian Coffee Roasters to stock its fragrant inventory. The expertly prepared and poured lattes are beautiful, delicious works of art. Four rotating signature latte flavors change monthly according to seasonal themes and barista inspiration, but customers can always order a cup of the basic brew anytime. Zing Café Boasting exposed brick walls, retrocool tabletops and simple-yet-chic décor, this intimate little coffee shop has been open since only last August, but is already making a big impression on its surrounding Village of WestClay community. Zing relies on a Zionsville supplier to provide its individual roast coffee, and the signature chocolatey café mocha nicely complements the menu of paninis, salads and soups. Through breakfast, brunch and lunch, you’ll see cozy tables populated with ladies who lunch, moms with kiddos and professionals pecking at their laptops while sipping steamy cups of coffee and espresso or frosty frozen frappes. Eggshell Bistro Stepping into this French flea market-themed establishment feels like transporting to Europe for a globally inspired breakfast or lunch. Owner Larry Hanes’ tasteful design sensibilities lend themselves nicely not only to the décor, but also to the beautifully presented plates of bistro-style fare and cups of Four
Barrel Coffee, exclusively sourced from a San Francisco company that remains highly focused on single-origin coffees (such as a rare Kenyan Sawa Sawa from a 30-acre microplantation).
The imported Italian La Marzocco espresso machine makes a gorgeous centerpiece behind the counter, in addition to a halogen Japanese siphon, two cold-drip Kyoto towers, a Todi system and an espresso bar.
Looking like a luscious milkshake complete with a whimsical paper straw, Eggshell’s hickory-laced N’Orleans Iced Coffee is one of the bistro’s most popular orders.

RUNNING FOR TESSA By Tracy Line
COLTS CHEERLEADERS SET THE PACE FOR THE 2016 ONEAMERICA 500 FESTIVAL MINI-MARATHON No one saw it coming. Not her teammates, not her friends and definitely not her family. So when former Indianapolis Colts Cheerleader Tessa David had a stroke, everyone she knew was left in shock. Tessa, who was only 28 at the time, was in peak physical condition. What she and her family and friends later learned is that a stroke can happen anytime to anyone at any age.
Colts Cheerleader and stroke survivor Tessa David.
“If anyone gets to the point where they want to quit, all you need to do is remember why you signed up for this in the first place: Tessa,” Brittany says. “That is all the motivation and fight you need to keep going.” Brittany and most of her fellow cheerleaders knew little about strokes prior to Tessa’s situation, but now they are advocates for awareness. “Victims of strokes are affected in many different ways, but a lot of the time they must relearn basic skills that we take for granted every day, such as walking and talking,” Brittany says.
In honor of Tessa, the Indianapolis Colts Cheerleaders, in conjunction with the OneAmerica 500 Festival MiniMarathon, plan to raise funds and awareness for the National Stroke Association. Last September, members of the squad ran the entire course in order to set the pace for donations. Their time? 2 hours and 7 minutes. So for each 2016 participant who finishes the race faster than the cheerleaders, the 500 Festival will donate $1 to the National Stroke Association (up to $6,000). To add to that, the Indianapolis Colts will also donate $1 for every person who beats the cheerleaders’ time. For Cheerleader Brittany E (last name protected for privacy) the cause is very personal. “I started cheering during the 2011-2012 season and Tessa was a veteran cheerleader at that time,” she says, “I had always looked up to her not only because she was a vet and an amazing dancer, but Tessa always had a way of lighting up the room with her smile and presence.” Are all the cheerleaders runners? Not exactly. “A few of us are,” says Brittany, “but most of the girls have not done many long distance runs.” In fact, many of the girls admitted to being nervous about setting the pace for donations. Even so, they were inspired to give it their all. The team plans to train together for the upcoming race so they can encourage each other along the way. Though distance running is a new type of physical challenge for many of the cheerleaders, they are excited to be raising funds for the cause.
28 kitindy.com
While Tessa still has challenges ahead, she has come far in the last year. Brittany credits Tessa’s strength and dedication to her recovery. “Tessa is one of the kindest, strongest, most positive people I know,” she says, “She is a fighter and although her road to recovery has been long and trying, she still keeps a smile on her face and still lights up the room with her presence. Our thoughts and prayers are with her every day.” Brittany and the Indianapolis’ Colts Cheerleaders are grateful to both the OneAmerica 500 Festival and the National Stroke Association for the opportunity to honor their friend and teammate. To join in the fun, fans are invited to take the challenge to social media using the hash tag #FasterThanColtsCheer.
SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS OF A STROKE Act Fast: When it comes to a stroke, the faster you can get help the better. Call 911 if you observe any of the following symptoms in a friend, loved one or co-worker. »» Sudden numbness or weakness of the face, arm or leg, especially on one side of the body. »» Sudden confusion, trouble speaking or understanding. »» Sudden trouble seeing in one or both eyes. »» Sudden severe headache with no known cause.
Nominate a Saint for CICOA’s Caregiver of the Year Award Taking care of a family member or friend is often rewarding, but it also can be an overwhelming responsibility requiring a great deal of sacrifice and creativity. To honor that sacrifice, CICOA Aging & In-Home Solutions created the annual Caregiver of the Year Award. Any personal, unpaid caregiver in Central Indiana who provided care for a family member or friend in 2015 is eligible. The winner will receive a $500 cash prize, be featured in the March/April edition of KIT magazine, and be recognized at CICOA’s Signature Breakfast on Thursday, April 21, 2016, at 502 East Event Center in Carmel, Ind. EXPERT ADVICE Q+A
Lasting, intentional weight loss AN INTRO TO DETOX. The American Norm It’s a sad but real truth: It’s now “normal” to be overweight in America. Look around. You know it’s true. Is it true when you look in the mirror, too? Ouch! The problem isn’t simply one of appearance. Losing weight isn’t just about looking better. It’s about feeling better. It’s about being healthier. (Fat, you see, isn’t benign. It’s not just sitting there. It’s active, and dangerous, and deadly.) So the answer? Just lose weight, right? And so we diet. As a nation, we diet. In fact, 50% of American women are dieting on any given day. And teenagers, too: 90%, in fact, try dieting to lose weight. How do we do it? We roll the dice (i.e., watch an infomercial, talk to a friend), spend a lot of money, and try something. Anything. Weight Watchers. NutriSystem. Slim Fast. Ideal Protein. Atkins. The Zone. South Beach. The result? A few months later, we’re still overweight. A year later, we’re still struggling.
Stephen P. Elliott, M.D. Living with Intention, INC 11979 Fishers Crossing Drive Fishers, IN 46038 317-863-5888 LivingWithIntention.biz
The answer So what’s the answer? Well, for many, the answer starts with DETOX. Detox? Really? Why? Because ours is a world swimming in toxins. We don’t think about it a lot, or at all, but it’s true. Toxins are everywhere. In the air we breath. In the water we bathe in and drink. In the additives, preservatives, and pesticides in our food. In the personal hygiene products we use to make ourselves presentable. They’re everywhere! Both around us and within. That’s right, they’re inside us. And they accumulate. And where do toxins like to accumulate more than anywhere else? In fat cells, that’s where. And because they accumulate in fat cells, toxins create a roadblock to lasting, effective weight loss. It’s simply much harder to lose weight and burn fat when the very fat we’re trying to burn is filled to the brim with bad stuff. Why? Because the fat cells themselves rebel. When we burn fat, fat cells shrink, right? Right. But when they shrink, what happens to the concentration of the toxins within those cells? It goes up. Let me say that again: when we burn fat, the concentration of toxins within our fat cells increases. So then what? Then this: the next time those fat cells get a chance to grow (read that: the next time you “cheat” on your diet) they jump at that chance as though their very cell-lives depend on it. Because they do.
So here’s the deal. Here’s a plan that gets us past that hurdle: By combining a well-designed detox protocol together with a healthy nutrition strategy (I hate the word “diet”), we can avoid the yo-yo frustrations of the past and finally realize lasting, successful weight loss. Intrigued? Want to hear more? Then call today and register for a FREE, 90-minute seminar.

FACT OR FANTASY? 5 THINGS YOU THOUGHT YOU KNEW ABOUT HEART DISEASE By Cindy Cohen, RN
31
Sometimes what you think you know gets in the way of what you should know. This happens when you think you already know all the facts, but you don’t, so your fantasy begins. You’ve made up your mind. When your mind is made up, there’s no need to hear any new information or reevaluate what you know. This is where fantasy takes over: you know the imaginary world you live in where you think you know all the answers. Don’t worry. You’re not alone. Many of us are right there with you. What you think you know about heart disease may be one of the fantasies you live in. Now might be a good time for a much-needed reality check to revisit what you think you already know. Let’s explore together. Ask yourself:
Do you know the heart disease facts or are you living in a fantasy world? Does this sound like something you might think?
1
No one in my family has ever died of a heart attack so I don’t need to worry.
Fantasy: Most experts agree that having a mom or dad who has had a heart attack can be a predictor but not always. People often share the same healthy or unhealthy habits as their parents, so it makes sense heart disease does cluster in family groups, but so do smoking, eating too many unhealthy foods and hanging out on the couch. As you live your life, if you make healthier lifestyle choices than your family did when you were growing up, your health picture will look different than your family's. If you make the same lifestyle choices, then yes, you need to worry.
are more likely to have a heart 2 Men attack than women.
Fantasy: Heart disease is the No. 1 cause of death for women. According to the New England Journal of Medicine, women are more likely to die of a heart attack than men even though slightly more men develop heart disease than women. You may be surprised to know that women are six times more likely to die of a heart attack than they are of breast cancer.
Heart disease is a disease of middle or 3 old age so I don’t need to worry about my kids. Fantasy: Studies show that by the time toddlers are 3, fatty deposits are already forming on the arteries. By age 12, hardening of the arteries is developing along with all those crazy hormones. Thirty percent of high schoolers ages 17-18 have high blood pressure, 17 percent have high cholesterol, 30 percent are obese and 6 percent have diabetes — all early signs of heart disease and predictors of heart attack.

emotional stress you are feeling 4 That can kill you.
Fact: It’s no joke. Your stress reaction is the way you cope with the frustration, anger and depression associated with the frantic pace of our everyday lives, and you may not be doing a very good job at coping according to recent studies. Whether you think you are handling it or not, a recent Mayo Clinic study reported treating anger and depression may be nearly as important for preventing heart attack as diet and exercise.
doesn't matter what I eat because it 5 Itdoesn’t really count.
Fantasy: Your food choices always matter. With every bite you are either helping to build a strong body or encouraging disease and sickness. You are either filling your body up with empty calories causing you to be overweight or with the nutrients needed for a fit body and better health. Foods either reduce inflammation, protecting your blood vessels, or increase inflammation, damaging them. There are no neutral foods. There is never a food that doesn’t count. They all count.
KNOW THE FACTS About 610,000 people die of heart disease in the United States every year. That’s one in every four deaths. One of every three women dies from heart attack each year, killing approximately one woman every minute. Heart disease is the leading cause of death for both men and women. Half of the men who die suddenly of heart disease have no previous symptoms. If you have no symptoms, you may still be at risk for heart disease. Even if you have no family history of heart disease, you can still have a heart attack and die. It’s up to you. Studies show that healthy choices have resulted in significantly fewer heart disease deaths. Here are a few lifestyle changes you can make to reduce your risks: »» Don’t smoke. Smoking reduces the oxygen and blood flow to the heart, which is vital to healthy heart function. »» Get a medical checkup and ask your doctor about how to manage your blood sugar, blood pressure, cholesterol and weight. »» Know your family history as far back as three generations including mom, dad, siblings,
Can a heart attack be reversed?
grandparents, great grandparents, aunts and uncles. Did they have a stroke or heart attack, and how old were they when they had it? »» Stay active at least 30 minutes most days of the week. You don’t have to run a marathon — just a little exercise goes a long way when it comes to your health. Activity brings oxygen to the heart, builds strong circulation and heart muscle. »» Educate yourself and your family first on the foods that are the healthiest — fruits, vegetables, whole grains, beans, soy, seeds and nuts — and then how to make healthy food choices easy and simple. The resources I most often recommend in health coaching for healthy eating are the American Heart Association Healthy Eating (heart.org), The Juice Plus+ Company (YourJuicePlus.com) and the USDA (choosemyplate.gov). Seek out the assistance of a medical professional, nutritionist and dietitian or health coach to guide you down the right path. Cindy Cohen, RN, is a Certified Health Coach and wellness Consultant. Network to launch the first dedicated Cardio-Oncology Clinic in Indiana.
Permanent damage after a heart attack can be mitigated with prompt treatment in the hospital. When you arrive at any of our Community Health Network location emergency rooms you are evaluated by a board certified cardiologist to determine if you qualify for state-of-the-art treatment and possible use of stents and other therapies than can manage blood clots in the blood vessels of the heart. These treatment options may not be feasible if you wait too long to come to the hospital, said Rey Vivo, M.D., cardiologist at Community Heart and Vascular.
chemotherapy may damage your heart. Community Heart and Vascular Hospital is first hospital in Indiana to offer a multi-disciplinary program for heart testing and management of patients undergoing cancer treatment. Thousands of Hoosiers receive chemotherapy treatments each day as they fight for their lives against a variety of cancers. What they may not know is that those lifesaving treatments may cause damage to their hearts. Understanding the connection between heart disease and cancer treatments has driven Community Health
Community’s Cardio-Oncology Clinic is located at Community Heart and Vascular Hospital on the campus of Community Hospital North. Community’s cancer patients will receive initial heart assessment screenings at Community Cancer Center North. Those at risk will be seen in the dedicated Cardio-Oncology Clinic, where they will receive an individualized cardiac risk evaluation and treatment plan. Their care will be closely coordinated between cardiologists and oncologists throughout the duration of their treatment schedule. According the Mayo Clinic, almost every chemotherapy drug has some effect on the cardiovascular system—and patients who are followed by a cardiologist specialized in treating cancer patients can prevent and reduce the negative effects of cancer-fighting drugs on the heart. “We understand that dealing with cancer can be overwhelming,” said Rey Vivo, M.D., cardiologist at Community Heart and Vascular and a leader of the initiative. “We want to reassure patients that we have a program that can look after their heart health before, during and after they receive cancer treatment. Using cardiac imaging and biomarkers, we aim for early detection and treatment of potential cardio-toxicity from cancer therapy.” — Provided by Community Health Network

EXPERT ADVICE Q+A
Maintaining good pelvic health
Women are sometimes hesitant to discuss pelvic health issues with their healthcare providers, but they don’t have to be. Cara Berg Raunick, DNP, CNP, Board Certified Women’s Health Nurse Practitioner at St. Vincent Carmel Women’s Center, allays fears about how to bring up some of the most common questions relating to this sometimes sensitive issue:
For a consultation or more information: St. Vincent Carmel Women’s Center 13420 N. Meridian St. Carmel, IN 46032 317.583.4437 stvincent.org/ womenscenter
Q A
What exactly does the pelvic area include?
Q A
What are some of the most common pelvic issues you see?
Q A
What symptoms might indicate a pelvic issue?
The pelvic area includes several organ systems — urinary, gastrointestinal and reproductive.
Pelvic and sexual health issues are far more common than people think. Twenty-five percent of women experience vulvar pain known as vulvodynia, 40 percent have concerns about sexuality, 20 to 55 percent experience urinary incontinence, and 10 to 20 percent will get surgery for incontinence or pelvic organ prolapse.
Leaking urine when you cough, laugh, sneeze or exercise; a sensation of pressure or bulge in your vagina; not being able to make it to the bathroom in time; waking up multiple times a night to use the bathroom; painful sex; persistent vulvar or vaginal itching, burning or dryness.
Q A
What should women do if they are experiencing any of these symptoms?
It’s always best to be evaluated by a healthcare provider. It’s really hard to correctly diagnose yourself, or have a provider diagnose you over the phone. It’s tempting to reach for an over-the-counter remedy, or to ask a nurse or doctor to call in a medication without seeing you, but we often end up treating the wrong thing that way. At best, you don’t get better; at worst, it can make a problem worse. If you do choose to start with an over-the-counter, make sure you schedule right away if what you try the first time doesn’t work.
ADVERTORIAL
Q A
How are pelvic issues diagnosed?
Q A
Is there a stigma about pelvic health issues?
Q
How much control do women have over their pelvic health?
A thorough history and exam is often enough to get a good diagnosis. Depending on the issue, labs, imaging or other tests can help figure out what’s going on.
Yes. Even though these issues are common, they are almost never talked about. Because of this, women often think there’s no way to make these problems better, or that what they’re experiencing is just a normal part of aging. You are not alone, and you don’t need to be embarrassed to talk with us. These are personal issues, and we get that, but it’s what we hear about and address every single day. These aren’t always quick and easy fixes (although sometimes they are), but there is help out there.
A
As with most health issues, some risk factors are within our control and some aren’t. Genetics and aging play roles we can’t do anything about. Pregnancy and childbirth are also risk factors. We do have more control over risk modifiers like avoiding smoking, watching your weight and practicing Kegel exercises.
Q
Tampons or pads?
A
What’s best is generally what’s best for you. Just make sure to avoid any product that’s scented.
Q A
What can women do to preserve their pelvic health?
Maintain a healthy weight, don’t smoke, follow a good diet. And practice those Kegels!

LODGE LOUNGER SUSAN SAYS: We all have those sweatpants that have been our go-to for more years than we’d like to admit. They’ve seen their fair share of rom-coms and veg fests and, in general, much better days. So retire those holey sweatpants and up your loungewear game. Choose patterned leggings in a fun bright hue or pattern to beat those winter blues. Add a lush oversized cardigan and slippers for a comfy look that is pajama-party ready.
COWBOYS & INDIANS SUSAN SAYS: You can wear a denim shirt year round. It’s an ideal layering piece and is a perfect complement to my Denim & Supply Ralph Lauren Aztec cardigan. For maximum comfort, I pull on my coziest leggings so I can curl up in an oversized chair with an enticing book. To ensure I stay toasty warm, I finish this look with an adorable knit hat lined in faux fur from Target.
MOST VALUABLE LAYER SUSAN SAYS: For another great denim look that is casual but still big on style, try a denim dress. Since it seems I’m always cold, I especially like to wear lots of layers in the winter. So underneath my dress is a Climatesmart Cuddl Duds tank, which wicks away moisture from your body to help you stay warm and dry. Over my dress is the coziest vest, ideal for wrapping up in on a blustery day. Seriously — it’s so soft I have to keep from petting myself. I found both the dress and vest on my yearly bus trip to Nashville, Indiana, with the Noblesville Parks Department.

HEARTBREAKER SUSAN SAYS: Some people abhor Valentine’s Day and believe it to be just a Hallmark holiday. While in one sense I can see their point, the hopeless romantic in me really appreciates the intentional reminder to celebrate those we love most. If you will be out on the town celebrating, pass on the LBD and opt for a little red dress instead. I picked up this adorable apple red, fit-andflare jersey dress with an embellished collar at T.J.Maxx for a steal. With black tights, platform pumps, vegan leather moto jacket and a fun clutch, this a great look for a hot date or a night out on the town with your friends.
REIGN BOOTS SUSAN SAYS: You can absolutely mix your high-end gems with your budget-friendly steals. These boots were a gift from a boutique that sponsored me during my reign as Miss Indiana. I remember when I received them I almost fell over. If I were to have paid for them, they would have cost me two months’ rent at that time. I’ve worn them so many times over the past 10 years, including at my wedding rehearsal, where we had a barn dance and I boogied the night away. These boots are an excellent example of how high-quality shoes are definitely worth the investment. At right, I paired the boots with an ivory suit skirt from Loft. Instead of wearing the suit jacket, I opted for a Mossimo Supply & Co. cheetah print sweater from Target. For accessories, I chose a large Style & Co. oversized envelope clutch and a statement necklace.
WORK THE BLANKET SCARF SUSAN SAYS: Blanket scarves are very popular at the moment and I really love the look. However, my petite frame can easily feel overwhelmed in all that fabric. I like to wear mine more as a vest and add a small leather belt to give it some shape. When worn with an all-black ensemble, black ankle booties and some of my favorite gold accessories, it makes for a stylish winter work look. Among my accessories are two Bourbon and Boweties bracelets purchased from AH Collection. This South Carolina company has tons of unique pieces that are full of Southern charm.

It is just as important to read the labels on your skin care and makeup products. It may surprise you to learn that, according to the FDA, there are only two categories of skin care ingredients: drug, which affects the “structure and function of skin” and cosmetic, which affects the “appearance of skin”. The manufacturers use all other terms purely for marketing purposes. Now before you read more, grab a jar or bottle of one of your skin care products. Some common skin care drugs you might find on a label are salicylic acid, benzyl peroxide, hydroquinone, trans retinoic acid (retinol, Retin A, Renova) and all sunscreens (zinc oxide, titanium dioxide parsol).
Dr. Jan Turkle Turkle & Associates
There are several cosmetic or non-active ingredients within skin care products. Some of those are: diluents (water), emollients, stabilizers, emulsifiers, solvents, thickeners, “feel” ingredients, preservatives, stabilizing agents and “label copy” ingredients. Some emollients you might find on your label are myristates, stearates, behenates and triglycerides. Some stabilizers are EDTA, BHT and BHA. Emulsifiers are usually a number preceded by PEG. For example, PEG-20 Glyceryl Stearate. Your label will probably contain some preservatives, such as parabens (methyl, butyl, isobutyl, and others), phenoxyethanol, diazolidinyl, methylisothiazolione, DMDM hydantoin and natural ingredients, which stop bacteria, yeast and mold from growing in the product. “Feel” ingredients are silicone based, such as cyclopentasiloxane or elastomers. Solvents are things like propylene or butylene, alcohol and phthalates. Finally, you may find thickeners such as polymers, cellulose gums, xanthan gums or waxes. The ingredients that most often lead us astray are the label copy, or marketing, ingredients that are added to make a claim on the label. These are ingredients such as aloe, most botanical extracts and “natural or “organic” ingredients. Active ingredients, which actually make changes in the skin, are things such as Vitamin A (which will always have “retin” in the name), Vitamin C (acids and “ates”), peptides, enzymes, acids (alpha and beta), anti-inflammatories, stem cells and factors and EGF or VGF. These are the ingredients to look for on your labels if you want to make a difference in your skin. Many products can make your skin feel and look good temporarily; the products you should invest in are those that make a lasting difference. Remember that price is not the determining factor. A $75 jar of cream can be just as effective as one that is $300. Read your labels for the active ingredients.

WAKE UP AND SMELL THE COFFEE Text by Amy Lynch | Photo by Chris Whonsetler
Cute vintage carts make the perfect storage spot for coffeerelated accoutrements. We found this one at a Noblesville antique store but weren’t sure what to stock it with. Or, for that matter, how to prepare a great cup of hot or iced coffee at home. Here, three local experts offer helpful tips and tricks.
how to grind, measure & prepare the perfect cup at home? three coffee fanatics chime in.
Wilfred Sze
Stephen Hall
Chemex, Hario V60 or AeroPress equipment (ranging in price from $30 to $60) all allow you to taste the subtleties of coffee and eliminate much of the bitterness. The Chemex brews coffee more like a tea, while AeroPress provides an espresso-type coffee.
The most important pieces of equipment are a scale and a good grinder. If you have those two things, you can ensure you’re using the proper amount of coffee each time you brew, and using the proper grind for whatever brewing method you enjoy the most. At home, I use a Hario Drip Scale and a Baratza Encore grinder.
Wilfred began his coffee journey by working for a roaster in Australia, and then training baristas in New Zealand. He’s now collaborating with General American Donut Company on a coffee soda product and other new drinks.
You must grind your own coffee. I recommend a Baratza Encore grinder, which costs about $120 but is very reliable. Don’t buy coffee at the grocery store because it goes stale quickly, becoming flat and bitter. Instead, order your coffee online from a specialty coffee house. “Specialty” describes beans of the best flavor that are produced in special microclimates. For iced coffee, get a cocktail shaker and mix your sweetener (honey, cinnamon, chocolate, caramel) with the coffee. Then add ice and shake. Pour over ice, and you’ve got a great iced coffee.
A former wine guy-turned-software guyturned-coffee guy, Stephen currently owns Tinker Coffee, where he hosts cupping classes and is very active on social media.
I have absolutely no issue with using a traditional drip brewer at home, but manual brewing allows you to control the brewing time and water temperature, which can help ensure the best brew possible. If I’m brewing coffee for me and my wife, I use a Chemex. If I’m brewing a single cup of coffee, I use an AeroPress or Kalita Wave. During warmer months, I love making Japanese-style iced coffee. We’ve got a great guide on using this method on our website (tinkercoffee.com). I got so into this kind of cold brewing that I started to experiment a bit and ended up really enjoying an ice-brewed coffee with a bit of lemonade on top. We call it a “coffee shandy.”
Alec Tod
Alec fell in love with coffee five years ago after learning about single origin coffee at a shop in Cincinnati and continues to grow his knowledge through experience. He launched Indie Coffee Roasters in 2013.
When brewing coffee at home, think about weight, water temperature and grind size. By adjusting these components, you can adjust the flavor of your coffee according to the brewing method. In order to achieve great coffee, you must have freshly roasted coffee, a quality burr grinder, a coffee drip scale and a stovetop kettle. There are many different home brewing methods; some of the most popular are a French press and a Chemex. The French press is an immersion method and is fairly easy to brew, but because of the metal filter, the cup can be gritty or heavy tasting. The Chemex is a pour-over brewing method. Although it makes what I feel to be a superior cup, the technique can be more intimidating. Indie Coffee Roasters specializes in cold-brew coffee concentrate. Adding water and ice allows you to adjust the cold brew to your own taste and preferences. Our suggestion is onethird concentrate, one-third water or milk, and one-third ice.

Jewelry: What ’s new for By Tracy Line
A
A new year calls for a new look. And according to our friends at Smith’s Jewelers, styles for 2016 include bold colors, earthy stones and more delicate settings for rings, necklaces and bracelets. But that’s not all; read on to find more about what’s happening in jewelry this year.
New Trends It’s all about the gold; both yellow and rose gold are hot metals for fashion jewelry this year. Bold colored stones are also increasingly popular. “Gemstones that are hot right now are more of the organic variety,” says Lisa Bartley of Smith’s, “Turquoise, opals, lapis, chalcedony, coral, [and] all varieties of quartz.” Another popular stone is morganite, a soft pink colored variety of beryl. Layering your jewelry is also fashionable. Stack bracelets and wear 2-3 delicate necklaces together to create a unique look. “Another big trend is wearing jewelry with self-expression and symbolism, along with designers and companies that donate part of their proceeds to charities,” says Lisa, “The Giving Keys collection is a great example.”
For the Bride While round brilliant-cut diamonds continue to be a best seller, new looks in bridal wear include oval, pear and emerald cut diamonds. White metal settings are still a fashionable choice, with many offering touches of rose gold. And you can never go wrong with a classic, romantic look. “Feminine mountings with halos of diamonds around the center diamond and in the mounting are still very popular,” notes Lisa.
Lasting Looks Even if you aren’t one to follow the trends, you can maintain a stylish look with just a few staples in your jewelry box. Simple diamond stud or gold earrings, a classic strand of pearls, and gold bangle or link bracelets will do the trick. These timeless pieces add elegance to any outfit.

Lisa Bartley, a graduate of IU Kelley School of Business, has worked for Smith’s Jewelers for over twenty years. “I love working on the downtown square of Noblesville,” says Bartley, “along with seeing and evaluating all the neat heirloom pieces that come in for appraising.” Bartley also has her Graduate Gemologist and Graduate Pearls credentials from the Gemological Institute of America (GIA). She and husband Chris are parents to nine-year-old twins, Ryan and Claire, as well as one-year-old Charlie.

TO A BETTER YOU
By Tracy Line | Illustrations by Wil Foster
We’ve all done it. We make New Year’s resolutions with gusto, and then by February we’ve dropped the ball on all of them. There has to be a better way, and in fact there is. Instead of setting unrealistic goals for the new year, what if you resolved to be a better you? To help out, Kit has rounded up some of our favorite experts to give you simple tips and tricks to put you on your way to becoming a better, happier, healthier you in 2016. It won’t even be that hard. In fact, you may discover taking better care of yourself proves to be a treat, not torture.

Catch MORE Zzz’s Women age 26-64 should get at least seven hours of sleep per night, but experts believe that more than 22 million Americans suffer from Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA). Left unchecked, OSA can lead to a variety of cardiovascular issues and even death. In the past, the most common treatment for OSA has been the CPAP (Continuous Positive Airway Pressure) machine, but it’s not for everyone. “Over 60 percent of patients with a CPAP machine quit wearing it after a few months or are noncompliant from the start due to its limitations,” says Dr. Michael Kluth of Kluth Family & Cosmetic Dentistry. But advances in dentistry are changing the way sleep apnea is treated. “As dentists, we are really one of the masters of the airway and oral-craniofacial complex,” Kluth says. “We can treat the CPAP nontolerant patients with an oral mandibular repositioning appliance (MPA).” These devices are worn at night and push the tongue and jaw forward, making the airway larger and improves airflow. “We have seen absolutely amazing results,” says Kluth of the MPA. With it, he reports, patients don’t experience OSA and feel more rested and focused. Practices like Kluth’s also offer sleep apnea tests and dental CT scans with a 3-D airway analysis. Kluth thinks that in the future, dentists and physicians will work together to diagnosis and treat OSA. If you aren’t getting the sleep you need, commit to doing something about it in 2016.
Say Yes to (healthy) Fats For years, we’ve shunned fatty foods, but many fats are good for you. Resolve to get more of them. “Conventional thinking views almost all fat intake as a negative thing, and this is simply not true,” says Danielle Martin, registered dietitian with Living With Intention Inc. “Consuming fats like coconut oil, avocados and almonds, which are considered high in fat, will actually help your body burn your unwanted fat and as a whole function optimally.”
Get Your Glow On Though we may not have taken care of our skin when we were younger, now we can virtually erase the effects of aging and sun damage. Halo is the world’s first and only hybrid fractional laser. “Halo targets skin damage two layers at a time,” says Dr. Jan Turkle of Turkle & Associates. “The result is a rejuvenated appearance without the downtime of other lasers.” According to Turkle, the technology treats damage on the skin’s surface and then goes down deeper to remove underlying damage. With as little as one treatment (depending on the amount of harm), you can restore that luminous glow you had when you were younger. The procedure is safe and results are permanent, though can recur if the skin is not protected. Results can be seen within just one week. “After the first 24 hours, the skin will peel but the patient can wear makeup,” says Turkle. “At two to three days, there is a light bronzing, and by day three or four, the skin peels to reveal new skin underneath.” Turkle & Associates offer individual and packages of treatments. A consultation can help determine the number of treatments needed.

Ask Why, Not What Some ailments such as high cholesterol, hypertension and insomnia are so common, we think they’re just part of life. But have you considered why you have them? Dr. Stephen Elliott of Living With Intention Inc. thinks you should. “It’s only when we answer the why that we can actually achieve real health,” Elliott says. When it comes to your overall health, there is a big difference between normal and optimal. “If you’ve been told that all your tests are ‘normal,’ and you’re still not feeling well, dig deeper,” he says. “Ask questions.”
Embrace Your Marriage Happy home, happy life. Steve Creel, a Licensed Clinical Social Worker at Living with Intention Inc., urges couples to make a commitment to their marriage to improve overall quality of life. “A strong friendship within a marriage fosters affection, romance and passion,” Creel says. “Set aside 20 minutes per day to listen and discuss each other’s stresses, interests, joys, fears and dreams.” Resolve to intentionally communicate your fondness and admiration for one another and share in the gratitude. “Building and maintaining a strong friendship allows a couple to accept differences and show affection, humor and respect while managing conflict,” Creel says.
Be Strong Diets feel so restrictive. Instead, try taking care of your body. One of the best ways to do so is to add resistance or strength training to your routine. Not only will you boost your metabolism and change your shape, but you’ll also increase bone, muscle mass and energy, and enhance your mood. If you’re unsure where to start, try Get In Shape for Women in Carmel. This specialty gym offers a comfortable atmosphere and touts more personalized service than many big-box gyms. “Our purpose is to empower women through body transformation,” says Marybeth Trotter, Studio Manager. “No one should ever be afraid to try our program, as our specialty is helping anyone at any level.” Clients work with a female certified personal trainer and follow a plan that offers strength training, high-intensity cardio workouts and a nutrition plan to increase muscle tone and resting metabolism. Bonus! Get in Shape for Women is offering a “New Year, New You” special. Save 50 percent off its four-week Slim Down Package with 12 sessions for $186. Call 317-566-8600 to set up a free session or visit getinshapeforwomen.com for details.
Be Proactive about Breast Health In addition to your doctor’s recommendations, stay on top of breast health by considering an annual breast thermography (digital infrared imaging). The procedure is non-invasive and takes only 15 minutes. “By establishing a baseline thermogram and then an annual breast thermogram, you will be able to monitor any physiological changes that may indicate dysfunction or abnormalities,” says Kelley Keesling, a Certified Thermographer at Living With Intention Inc. Early detection gives doctors a “jump-start” on treatment strategies.
Let Go of the Stress Decrease stress and start your day right by planning the night before. “Take care of the tasks and decisions that must be made each morning before you and your family head out the door,” suggests Linda Elliott, Licensed Mental Health Counselor at Living With Intention Inc. Working ahead to lay out clothes; pack backpacks and briefcases; and find musical instruments or sports equipment will make the next morning less stressful. Controlling the “controllables” Elliott says, allows space for the “curveballs” of life — like your car not starting. 45

EXPERT ADVICE Q+A
Women and wine
Many women enjoy a glass of wine with dinner or a champagne toast on special occasions. But if that glass becomes two, or three — or a whole bottle, it may be time to think about how much is too much. Here, Robin Parsons, Fairbanks director of adult services, answers questions about women and alcohol.
For a consultation or more information: Fairbanks Addiction Treatment Center 8102 Clearvista Pkwy., Indianapolis Robin Parsons is the director of adult services at Fairbanks. Women can reach out to Fairbanks and set up an appointment for a substance abuse assessment by calling (317) 849-8222. Or, for more information about treatment options for alcohol dependence or alcoholism, visit www. samsha.gov/find-help.
Q A
What types of alcohol do women seem to have the most problem with?
Q A
Why do women gravitate toward wine?
We see women who drink all types of alcoholic beverages. Alcoholism is a progressive disease. A woman may start with wine or beer, but move to a beverage with higher alcohol content, or continue with the same beverage in greater quantity.
Wine is popular among women because it’s a legal and socially acceptable way to manage stress. Wine is common at events where women are present. The media contributes to the increase in women and alcohol abuse — women are often seen with a glass of wine in movies and TV, which suggests this is normal behavior.
Q A
How does the road to addiction begin?
It is really only healthy to have no more than one 5-oz. glass a day. Women aren’t able to metabolize alcohol at the same rate as men. Also, women tend to drink wine at home alone to medicate sleep issues, depression or anxiety. Some women have a genetic disposition that makes them more vulnerable for alcohol use to lead to abuse, and then to addiction. Others may have unresolved trauma or emotional issues and may be unaware they are self-medicating. Wine is a depressant, so what may make you feel better initially actually exacerbates the depression and anxiety.
Q A
Are there risk factors for alcoholism that women should be aware of?
According to the National Institute for Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, it doesn’t take much alcohol to impair the ability to drive. Alcohol can also interact with a wide variety of medicines. Research suggests that as little as one ADVERTORIAL
drink per day can slightly raise the risk of breast cancer in some women. A pregnant woman can harm her unborn baby by drinking. Heavy drinking also increases the risk of becoming a victim of violence and sexual assault, and long-term drinking is more likely to damage a woman’s health than a man’s, even if the woman has been drinking less or for a shorter length of time.
Q A
What are some indications that you might be drinking too much?
Ask yourself these questions. Even if you only say yes to one, it’s a good idea to talk with a professional: • Do I sometimes drink more than I intend to? • Does it take more than before to achieve the same desired effect? • Do I routinely experience cravings/desire for it? • Have I abandoned other activities so I can drink? • Have other people voiced concern about my drinking? • Have I continued to drink despite negative consequences? • Have I been unsuccessful at attempts to cut down? • Do I lie about or hide my drinking from others?”
Q A
How is alcohol abuse treated?
Treatment approaches for an alcohol problem vary depending on severity. Women with alcohol problems, but who aren’t yet alcohol-dependent may be able to stop or wreduce their drinking with help. We believe women should be treated through gender-specific treatment interventions and programming. Women’s treatment and recovery needs are different than men’s. It’s important to speak to a healthcare professional who has expertise in dealing with substance-abuse issues.

ALL EYES By Brooke Reynolds | Product photos by Chris Whonsetler | Illustrations by Wil Foster
Don’t dump your makeup bag. A fresh look for the new year doesn’t equal a cosmetics overhaul. Updating just a few of your eye-makeup products and routines will go a long way to giving you well-rested, attention-grabbing eyes.
eyebrows
Strong eyebrows are in. A well-groomed, prominently defined brow acts as a frame for your features and makes you look more awake. If you only change one thing about your makeup routine in 2016, resolve to fill in your brows every day. Here, we decode brow products so you know what will make the biggest difference for your eyes. Brow pencils are for patchy spots and thinned-out brow tails. Use short, light strokes to draw in missing hairs. Be sure to use a spoolie (similar to a mascara wand) afterward to blend. Clinique’s Superfine Liner for Brows, found at Saks, has an ultrafine tip so you can draw the smallest hairs possible with extreme precision. Brow powder adds to the fullness of the brow. Coat an angled brow brush with the powder and use light strokes to fill in the entire brow. Benefit’s Brow Zings Shaping Kit, found at Ulta, is perfect for the job. It comes with naturalshaded brow powder, a pigmented wax for shaping, tweezers, and hard-angle and blending brushes. Tinted brow gel tames unruly grays and also tints them to match the rest of your brow. Choose a color that’s slightly lighter than your nongray hairs. Anastasia Beverly Hills’ Tinted Brow Gel, found at Ulta, comes in several healthybrow color options and won’t flake, fade or clump.
LASHES
It seems like there are a thousand mascaras on the market. Believe it or not, there’s a reason for that. Different types achieve different looks for your eyes. Here, pick a customfit mascara based on what's on your agenda.

Thanks to Kim Kardashian, contouring the face is all the rage right now. If you're intrigued but haven't gone all the way, start with your eyelids. Below, determine your eye shape and follow the contouring instructions to give them a more dimensional, rounder, larger shape.
deep-set
Concentrate any shimmery eyeshadow on the eyelid. Smudge a darker shadow along the lash line, and extend this color up and out from the eye in a winged effect. Use eyeliner to intensify the winged look.
hooded
Apply a matte vanilla eyeshadow to your brow bone and eyelid. Blend a medium shade in and above your crease. Concentrate a darker eyeshadow in the outer half of your eye, creating a C shape as you blend it in.
wide-set
Apply a skin-tone eyeshadow to your brow bone, crease and eyelid. Use a medium eyeshadow to intensify the inside corners of your crease. Use your finger tip to tap a shimmery vanilla eyeshadow on the center of the eyelid.

Citrus Syrup wit h rosemar y and Meyer lemon peel
By Katherine Costello
WELCOME TO THE PERFECT TIME OF YEAR
to take advantage of the bounty of citrus in the market. What better way to brighten up the Indiana winter than with the instant freshness citrus brings to the table, no matter the month or the temperature. I have some seasonal favorites, and when I see them in the store, my heart races. The most exotic of these is the Buddha’s Hand, also known as “fingered citron.” If you see one, grab it up like the treasure it is. The fragrance alone will permeate a room with a divinely sharp, sweet floral scent. This distinct member of the citron family isn’t just unusual in appearance. Inside, it has relatively juice or flesh, and its pith isn’t bitter. You can zest away the entire fruit! Keep an eye out for blood oranges, satsumas, Meyer lemons, Cara Cara oranges, and Ruby Red grapefruit in the produce department of your store. Always ask about upcoming and new arrivals from the citrus family when the weather turns cold and baking seems to be the obvious solution. All of these recipes start with a Simple Citrus Syrup that you can make ahead and use as needed. Enjoy the season!
SIMPLE CITRUS SYRUP
/2 cup water /2 cup sugar or honey 1 cup citrus juice (your choice)* 1 1
1 Bring all the ingredients to a boil. Reduce for about 20 minutes over medium heat, stirring often. 2 Store sealed in the refrigerator. *I like to divide into two portions. I put a sprig of rosemary and Meyer lemon peel in one, and satsuma peel in the other to add extra flavor to each batch.

KALE CITRUS SALAD 4 SERVINGS
DRESSING
1 tablespoon plain greek yogurt* 1 /3 cup citrus syrup (recipe on page 61) 1 /3 cup fresh squeezed citrus of your choice 1 /4 teaspoon minced garlic 1 tablespoon olive oil 1 pinch cayenne pepper Salt and pepper, to taste
SALAD
5 ounces baby kale 1 avocado, peeled and cubed 1 grapefruit, peeled, sectioned and cut into 1/2 -inch pieces 1 orange or 2 satsumas, peeled and sectioned 1 12-ounce can garbanzo beans or white bean of your choice 1 /4 cup roasted pumpkin seeds 1 Using an in immersion blender (preferred), food processor or blender, blend together the ingredients for the dressing. 2 Toss the salad ingredients with the dressing and serve. *For a dairy-free “wilted” salad, I’ve made this by omitting the yogurt and heating the dressing … also very yummy!

CITRUS CHICKEN WITH FENNEL 4 SERVINGS
2 chicken breasts, halved and pounded to about 1/2 inch thick 1 /3 cup flour mixed with 1/2 teaspoon salt and 1/2 teaspoon pepper (for dredging) 1 /3 cup olive oil 1 fennel bulb, thinly sliced 2 shallots, thinly sliced 1 teaspoon minced garlic 1 /3 cup white wine or chicken stock 1 /3 cup citrus syrup (recipe on page 61) 1 /3 cup heavy cream Lemon slices and fennel fronds, to garnish
1 Dredge the chicken pieces in the flour mixture to coat, shaking off excess flour. In a skillet over medium-high heat, sautĂŠ chicken in all of the olive oil except 1 tablespoon until it is golden brown (about 4 minutes on each side). 2 When the chicken is done, remove from the skillet. Add the remaining 1 tablespoon olive oil to the skillet and sautĂŠ the fennel, shallots and garlic until translucent. Add wine and deglaze the pan. Add citrus syrup, reduce a bit, and then whisk in the heavy cream. Add the chicken to warm, and serve garnished with lemon and fennel fronds.
