THE AFFORDABLE COMPANIES When you’re undertaking a remodeling project, the choices and questions can be overwhelming. Let the experts at Affordable Companies simplify the process. 1 Light fixtures and Mid-century table

For this Mid-century Modern house, we wanted seating at the island, but not in a traditional way. We fell in love with the style and shape of the light fixtures. Once we selected the light, we sent the wood shade to our Amish cabinetmaker to custom-match the grain and stain. We then designed the table to sit right below the light. 2 Backsplash Tile This tile is a classic penny round. We wanted a fun pattern, but decided to give it more impact by running all the way up to the ceiling behind the hood.

CARLIE INTERIOR DESIGNER Carlie has more than 10 years of experience in residential remodeling; six specifically focused on kitchen and bath design. Her goal is to always understand her clients’ needs and provide a custom design that meets their lifestyles. Carlie is versatile in all styles of design, but personally loves Mid-century Modern.

3 Cambria White Cliff Quartz Cambria White Cliff quartz countertops were selected not only for durability, but the homeowner has a large collection of colorful Fiestaware pottery. The pure white counters provide a backdrop for the vibrant pops of color. It also allows the homeowner to easily swap out the accent colors in the future. 1000 3rd Avenue SW, Suite 120 Carmel, IN 46032 | 317.575.9540 the-affordablecompanies.com

Roxanne & Darrel’s story could be that of many. They were overweight, but still led relatively active lives. “You just can’t out-exercise a bad diet” is Roxanne’s conclusion, “our cholesterol numbers were high and we were both on meds for it. Darrel also had high triglycerides.” Roxanne is not alone in being unaware of the difference between what we “think” we look like and what we really do. She comments, “Geez, I didn’t realize just how much weight I gained until I saw this picture. I actually had a hard time finding a full length one of Darrel and me because ‘selfies’ are mostly of our face only.” “After going through HNT, we have really become conscious of our overall health, and have managed to eat better, stay active, and keep our weight at a healthy number. “i lost 20 pounds and Darrel lost about 30. We are both off our meds,” states Roxanne. But what she is most proud of is how her new lifestyle impacts those she loves most. Adoring the cherished title of cool Aunt Rox, she beamingly restates, “My family means the world to me.”

BefOre BefOre

This truth is reciprocated as Roxanne’s sister, Rachel, and brother-in-law Andy, are the ones that introduced her to HNT. Rachel and Andy were introduced through his parents, who heard about HNT through their niece. Family and friends celebrate the successes of those they love.

Health & Nutrition Technology (HNT) is more than a weight loss program. We strive to assist you in living out the motto: Change your life... so you can live it! People want changes they can sustain. We do too. We have been in the Indianapolis area since 2002, with Dr. Dawn Ayers at the helm. A medically supervised behavior modification program tailored to meet your needs. COMPRESSION SOCKS HELPFUL FOR RUNNERS & WALKERS Graduated compression socks aid recovery for athletes and weekend warriors

K

nee high compression socks or calf sleeves are becoming increasingly popular among runners and walkers. If you have participated in any running events lately, you have probably noticed that many runners are wearing these products and you may wonder why.

Jeffery P. Schoonover, MD FAAFP, RVT, RPVI, Diplomate, American Board of Venous and Lymphatic Medicine

Indiana Vein Specialists®

Blood circulates in our bodies through a network of vein and arteries. As you probably remember from high school biology, blood that is pumped from the heart to the legs must be moved back up to the heart. The calf muscle actually pumps venous blood against the force of gravity when you walk and run. Medical grade compression stockings improve blood flow by helping the calf muscle pump more effectively. These stockings have been used for years with patients after surgery, to treat leg swelling and for varicose and spider veins. It is well documented that these stockings benefit those with venous and lymphatic disease by reducing pain, inflammation and swelling. For athletes without venous or lymphatic disease, there is increasing evidence that sports compression stockings can decrease muscle pain after a race. This pain occurs because of lactic acid build-up, micro-trauma at the muscle fiber level, electrolyte depletion and a release of prostaglandins. In addition to runners, compression socks are being routinely worn by golfers, baseball players, football players, basketball players and other athletes. It is clear that wearing compression socks after exercise, such as running, lessens muscle pain because it increases the calf muscle pumping efficiency, which clears out lactic acid and prostaglandins more effectively. There are no definitive studies yet that show a clear benefit of use during an athletic event. The good news is that sports compression socks and sleeves are available in a variety of colors and styles. We do advise all athletes with varicose vein disease to wear compression socks during events to increase the calf muscle pump function while reducing swelling and venous pooling in the legs. Indiana Vein Specialists® is a proud sponsor of the Carmel Marathon Weekend. Join us at the event’s Fitness Expo on Friday, April 17, 2015 at the Monon Center in Carmel.

EXPERT ADVICE DETOX

Spring Clean Yourself: an intro to detox Spring. It’s all about new beginnings. New life. Fresh starts. It’s time to open the windows and air out the house. Time for a good, deep cleaning. This year, why not give yourself a fresh start, too? What’s this about? The word of the day is “detox.” Short for “detoxification,” DETOX has become a buzzword of sorts. You’ll see it on magazine covers. You’ll hear about it on TV and probably even from some of your friends. People talking about “cleansing,” or “doing a cleanse.” Cleansing is just another word for detox.

Stephen P. Elliott, M.D. Living with Intention, INC

The scoop So what’s this all about?

317-863-5888

First, there’s the fact that we live in a world saturated with bad stuff. [See “Toxic Soup” box.] In the air we breathe. In the food we eat. In all those lotions, creams, soaps, powders, and sprays we use to make ourselves look pretty and smell good. And they build up. They accumulate. Next, we recognize that, over time, all this bad stuff becomes more than we can handle. While our bodies are uniquely designed to be resilient, our ability to poison ourselves and our environment has outpaced that resilience. That’s where detox comes in. Detox helps your body rid itself of all that accumulated bad stuff. But be careful! Sometimes, when you start detoxing you can get into trouble. That’s why it should only be done under the guidance of a physician specifically trained to walk you through the process. Are your liver and kidneys ready for detox? Do you have diabetes? Heart disease? What about side effects? If you’re going to detox, detox safely. Want to hear more? call today and register for a FREE, 90-minute seminar. WHAT NOT TO DO WHEN CLEANING By Tracy Line

1. Scrub Away Stains: Scrubbing your carpet can destroy the fibers. Instead, blot stains with a damp white towel and treat with a stain cleaner. Make sure you blot until almost dry, otherwise new dirt will cling to the area, creating a new stain. 2. Mix Products: Combining products (such as bleach and ammonia) can pose a health risk. In addition, the chemical combinations can damage surfaces such as tubs and countertops. Also avoid mixing two brands of a similar product; doing so can create noxious fumes.

3. Ignore What You Can’t See: The dirtiest spots in our homes are those that get touched the most. Make a habit of wiping and disinfecting light switches, appliance handles, doorknobs and the TV remote every time you clean.

4. Clean Windows in the Sun: Sunshine and warmer temperatures cause window cleaners to dry too quickly, leaving windows streaked. For best results, clean when it’s below 70 degrees and cloudy. Spray solution on windows, scrub with a microfiber cloth or non-scratch sponge and use a squeegee to get rid of excess cleaner.

5. Go Au Naturel Everywhere: In our attempts to be green, many of us are using homemade or all-natural cleaners. Such solutions work well, but the acids in household staples like lemon juice, vinegar or baking soda can damage natural stone countertops and marble or wood floors. Educate yourself on where you can safely use these solutions.

HOW TO:

THE 1-DAY SPRING CLEAN Most of us like having a clean house; it’s the getting there we struggle with. But spring-cleaning doesn’t have to be hard. Use these 6 easy steps to get your cleaning done in a day.

Step 1: Define Your Priorities. Take a walk through your home and make a game plan. Do you want to clean all the rooms or concentrate on a few? Will some rooms take longer than others? Are there certain areas (e.g. mirrors, knickknackfilled shelves) that need extra attention? Knowing what you’re in for can help you manage your time. Step 2: Gather Your Gear. Get everything you need together in advance so you can clean faster. Fill a tote or bucket with items such as microfiber cloths; bathroom cleanser; disinfectant wipes; sink, counter and window cleaners; 2 non-scratch sponges (for the bathroom and kitchen); and a roll of paper towels. Toss in your iPod and you might even have fun while you work.

Step 3: Line up the Loads. Start the day by stripping the beds (including blankets and comforters) and gathering bathroom towels and throw rugs. Do a load of laundry each time you clean a room, and by the end of the day, the laundry will be done. Step 4: De-Clutter. Grab a basket and fill it with everything that needs to be tossed or put away: your daughter’s snow boots, old magazines, the candle you never once lit. At the end of the day, go through it and keep, toss or donate to your heart’s content.

Step 5: Pick a room, any room. Start by wiping down ceiling fans and work your way south. Wipe down pictures, shelves/counters, furniture and baseboards. Finish by vacuuming and/or mopping. Time saver: Spray cleaners on the bathroom tub, toilet and counters beforehand. Return after cleaning another room and then quickly scrub and rinse everything from the top down. Step 6: Wrap It Up. Remake the beds, put away towels, replace rugs and go through your clutter basket. Next you can pat yourself on the back for a job well done. Wine anyone?

Spring break is often a time for good family memory-making and relaxation; a “break” from our day-today lives. It is also a common time for high school and college students to misuse substances like alcohol. In recognition of Alcohol Awareness Month, the Counseling team at Living with Intention wants to help you and your family have a fun, safe, and healthy Spring Break by providing you with some information and tools to help you prepare:

FA CTS:*

WHAT ’S A PARENT TO DO?

• 1,825 students between the ages of 18 – 24 die each year from unintentional, alcoholrelated injuries including alcohol poisoning.

• Parents need to have open, honest conversations with their kids about the expectations and boundaries around alcohol use, as well as discuss the risks.

• Signs of alcohol poisoning include: slow and irregular breathing, vomiting, lapse of consciousness and confusion.

• DO NOT UNDERESTIMATE THE POWER THAT GOOD, INTENTIONAL PARENTING CAN HAVE ON THE DECISION-MAKING OF KIDS.

• Additional dangers associated with alcohol risk include: sexual violence, assault, and injuries due to intoxication.

• Participate in activities with your kids that provide opportunities for quality family time.

• Each year nearly 700,000 students between the ages of 18 and 24 are assaulted by a peer who has been drinking.

• Be a role model for healthy, age-appropriate alcohol use.

• More than 97,000 students between the ages of 18 and 24 are victims of alcoholrelated sexual assault or date rape each year.

• For more helpful tips, visit our website at LivingWithIntention.biz

• Additionally, nearly 600,000 students annually are involved in unintentional, alcohol-related injuries.

HOW MUCH IS TOO MUCH? EARLY EDUCATION ON ALCOHOLISM & ADDICTION

by Judy Burnett

A large portion of the adult population drinks alcohol. But how much is too much and how often is too often? Excessive alcohol use is the fourth leading preventable cause of death in the United States and accounts for one in 10 deaths among working adults. How do you know if you or someone you know has an alcohol problem? April is National Alcohol Awareness Month, aimed at increasing public awareness and understanding to decrease the stigma associated with alcoholism that often prevents individuals and families from seeking help. This year's theme is For the Health of It: Early Education on Alcoholism and Addiction.

The USDA defines moderate drinking among women as up to one drink per day and up to two drinks per day for men. Men and women use alcohol as a stress reliever, a socialization tool, a reward, a gourmet activity, a status symbol or for the positive impact on heart disease. According to the National Center for Health Statistics, 67.6 percent of men 18 and older and 55.3 percent of women 18 and older describe themselves as current drinkers. Last year NBC's "Today" program reported that experts are warning

about alcohol abuse by moms. In a TODAY.com survey, almost 40 percent of respondents said drinking helps them cope with the stress of being a parent and more than onethird said they have mom friends they think have a problem with alcohol. More than half of the respondents to the survey named wine as their drink of choice. Stephen Creel is a licensed addiction counselor with Living With Intention of Fishers. He works with adults and adolescents facing addiction. He says women metabolize alcohol differently than men. "Alcohol is

more concentrated and the physical consequences can be greater," Creel says. "Women progress to dependence more quickly than men." "For women there is no safe dose of alcohol," says George Brenner, a licensed addictions specialist with Community Health Network and part of their Psychiatric Consultation Liaison Team. He warns of the effect of alcohol on women, Why do we drink to excess? The Collaborative Studies on the Genetics of Alcoholism is a nine-center research project in the United States designed to identify and understand

Does Someone You Know Need Help With Alcohol? Please remember that even if a person shows some of the symptoms, it does not necessarily mean that they have an alcohol addiction. The presence of these symptoms could relate to stress, depression or other health or behavioral problems that may or may not be related to substance abuse.

BEHAVIORAL SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS • Guilt or shame around drinking • Lying about drinking • “Blacking out” or forgetting what happened while drinking • Activities involving drinking alcohol are a priority • Withdrawal from relationships • Neglect of children • Unexplained absences • Legal problems

MEDICAL AND PHYSICAL SIGNS • Declining personal hygiene and personal health • Nausea, vomiting or diarrhea • Pupils larger or smaller than usual; face flushed or bloated • Weight change • Tremors or shakes • Emergency room visits for alcohol overdose or unexplained injuries • Inability to focus and track in a conversation • Slurred speech; unsteady gait Brought to you by Fairbanks

the genetic basis of alcoholism. Indiana University is part of that project. Howard Edenberg of IU School of Medicine-Indianapolis has reported that genetic analyses have shown there are regions on three chromosomes that contain genes that increase the risk for alcoholism.

Alcohol and Youth Alcohol abuse is common among middle, high school and college students. According to Brenner, alcohol is the No. 1 drug of choice for American youth. Some students mix energy drinks and alcohol, such as Red Bull and vodka, a potentially deadly combination. Energy drinks contain caffeine and some contain alcohol as well. Mixing the two increases the risk of heart rhythm problems. In 2010, the FDA concluded that mixing energy drinks and alcohol is dangerous and should be avoided. "Adults will move from starting to drink to dependence in about 10 years," Brenner says. "Youth can move from beginning to drink to alcohol dependence in one year." Creel suggests parents be alert for signs that their child might have an alcohol problem such as loss of interest in activities and sports, change in peer groups, irritability and declining grades. Because of spring break and proms, Creel says, "This is a time for binge drinking and that can cause sexual assaults, auto accidents and death." He believes parents should not allow children to drink at home. "The belief that providing your children with a safe place to drink will prevent them from drinking when they are not with you is misguided and dangerous. Drinking at a younger age drastically increases the likelihood of dependency later in life—regardless of when the use began."

Where to Turn for Help If you think you or someone you know has drinking-related problems, seek help. In 2012, 1.4 million adults and 76,000 adolescents received treatment for an alcohol use disorder at a specialized facility in the United States. "Like any other chronic disease, it is not going to go away on its own," says Robin Parsons, director of adult services at Fairbanks Hospital in Indianapolis. Fairbanks adult and adolescent patients begin with an assessment to determine the appropriate level of care. Fairbanks services include medically managed detox, medically monitored rehab, clinically managed residential care for those at high risk for relapse, a partial hospitalization program and an intensive outpatient program. "A person can directly admit to any level of care based on the assessment," Parsons says. The adolescent recovery program is specific to the child's needs and may include attendance at Hope Academy, a chartered public high school operated by Fairbanks. Community Health Network operates a 24-hour crisis line where one can seek information and referral for themselves or someone else. Community provides addiction treatment on both an inpatient and outpatient basis, including community-based outpatient services. Outpatient care usually involves one to three group sessions a week. "None of us wants to acknowledge that a significant problem exists," Brenner says. "Talk to your primary care provider or a professional that works with substance use disorders. Get an assessment." Private individual addiction counseling for adolescents and adults is available at Living With Intention. Creel says counseling is necessary at any age to overcome alcohol abuse. "It is not a lack of willpower," Creel says. "Addictions will not surrender to willpower."

KNOW THE FACTS AND WHERE TO GET ANSWERS • Projectcork.com provides anonymous, self-assessment tools. Click clinical tools, and then AUDIT for a selfassessment. • Women are less likely to seek treatment due to societal stigmas—confidentiality in treatment is key. • Every year, families and communities are devastated by tragedies that occur over spring break due to binge drinking. • Women progress more quickly than men from use to abuse to dependence due to differences in metabolism. • Women are at greater risk for harmful physical effects from alcohol abuse than men. • To be most effective at any age, interventions must be tailored to the individual and their family. Stylist Susan Beckwith brings her mighty mix of spunk and polish to your spring closet. Use these seven wardrobe staples to create countless outfits. By Susan Beckwith | Photos by Chris Whonsetler

SUSAN SAYS: Most people only use 20 percent of their closet 80 percent of the time. Therefore, it’s critical to build a wardrobe that is full of quality pieces that will stand the test of time.

WWSW W H AT WO U L D S U S A N W E A R

SPRING STAPLES FLARES SUSAN SAYS: For those who detest skinny jeans, great news … flared jeans and trousers will be big for spring 2015. I’m excited about this trend. As much as I love the skinny silhouette for those of us with hips, we welcome a figure-flattering style that looks great on all shapes and sizes. If a true flare is intimidating, a bootcut is a great moderate option. I was having a bit of a Rachel Zoe moment and channeling my inner ’70s diva with this look. I especially love my fringe bag from Delaney’s that can be worn as a cross body purse or clutch. 38 kitindy.com March +April 2015

TRANSITIONAL ACCESSORIES SUSAN SAYS: Scarves, statement necklaces and bags in the hues of spring can help you transition your winter looks right into spring. Those who know me best can attest that I love a classic leopard print. Most leopard prints consist of shades of tans and browns, which are traditionally associated with fall and winter wardrobes. This is a fashion fallacy! Think of leopard print as a neutral that can truly be worn year round. For example, by adding my Steve Madden bag, J-Crew scarf and Madden Girl pumps in shades of coral, it transcends this dress from The Linden Tree into a perfect option for your spring wardrobe.

TRENCH SUSAN SAYS: I feel instantly chic when I wear a trench. I love this neutral Ann Taylor cape trench option because it’s a nice twist on a classic. For this look, I decided on my Joe’s skinny jeans, navy and white stripped J-Crew T-shirt, floral pumps and a minty green purse I surprisingly scored at a hospital women’s boutique. (Hospital gift shops and boutiques have lots of hidden gems. They often attend the same apparel markets as other area boutiques.) From weekend to work, a trench is a piece that’s truly worth investing in. 39

FLORALS SUSAN SAYS: Mixing patterns can add some spunk to your spring look. It’s less expected than traditional solids. I fell in love with this skirt as soon as I saw it at Boomerang Boutique off of Mass. Ave. That was no small feat considering I had exactly $0.50 to pay the meter, which meant mere minutes to peruse the store. I highly encourage those looking for truly eclectic urban finds to check out this boutique.

CARDIGANS SUSAN SAYS: Summer is around the corner, but it hasn’t arrived just yet. To look stylish without fear of freezing, invest in a few cardigans. These are great transitional pieces that can easily be layered over your favorite dresses and blouses. In the summer, I wear longer, lightweight cardigans with T-shirts, denim shorts and ankle booties to create a look perfect for hitting the summer music festival scene.

FLIRTY DRESS SUSAN SAYS: Perhaps because I think of pastels when it comes to spring, I believe it’s a sweet time of year. It’s the perfect time for feminine ruffles and polka dots. I love the classic look of this Tommy Hilfiger dress. I purchased it for a fashion field study with Ball State University to visit the Tommy Hilfiger showroom in New York. The pop of color in the belt adds some fun personality and goes perfectly with my Michael Kor’s carry-all tote. 40 kitindy.com March +April 2015

DENIM SHIRT SUSAN SAYS: The options are endless with a classic denim shirt. Wear it belted over a spring dress or pair it with skinnies in a bright cheery color. For a work look, tuck a denim shirt into a pencil skirt and slip on some cute heels. You can even wear denim on denim. The trick is making sure to keep the light denim on top and the darker denim on the bottom.

For boutique coupons, visit Bel leoftheMidwest.com For more of Susan’s suggested staple items and a free printable checklist, visit her blog, belleofthemidwest.com. Included along with the checklist are great coupons for The Linden Tree, Boomerang Boutique, A Corner Cottage and Delaney’s.

SEEKING A FIRMER, SMOOTHER YOU? Three out of five women are unhappy with their bodies but a new procedure offers a non-surgical solution

S

ixty percent of women and 53 percent of men hate looking at their bodies in the mirror. When the lumps, bumps, bulges and dimples require a change to looser fitting pants, stretch fabrics and big shirts, it may be time to consider the Cutera truSculpt®, a new non-surgical treatment developed for those who eat right and exercise regularly but just cannot seem to get rid of stubborn muffin tops, love handles, saddlebags, bra fat and cellulite. TruSculpt is a “no downtime” treatment that uses radio frequency energy to deliver heat to targeted zones, reducing, firming and smoothing problem areas over time. The energy is delivered uniformly to the deep subcutaneous fat layers to sculpt or contour the body. This RF energy destroys the targeted fat cells, which are broken down and disposed of by the body over about three months. The treatment works well for abdomen, flanks, thighs, buttocks and other stubborn areas where fat accumulates and is effective for both women and men. TruSculpt can also temporarily reduce the appearance of cellulite. We recommend a minimum of three treatments spaced 30 days apart. While results vary with each patient, results are seen as early as four weeks after the first treatment with optimal results typically achieved at 12 weeks after the last treatment. A TruSculpt treatment lasts about an hour or less and you can return to your normal activities immediately. Some patients experience some redness, swelling or mild tenderness in the treated area for a few hours following the procedure. The ideal candidate for TruSculpt is in reasonably good health and not obese. It is not a weight loss solution and will not deliver the same results as a surgical procedure, such as liposuction. It can be used for all skin types and colors. TruSculpt should be performed only by providers who have been trained and certified in the procedure. If you think TruSculpt might be for you, call us to schedule a consultation.

Dr. Turkle offers an ongoing series of free webinars on various surgical and non-surgical enhancement topics. To view a webinar go to www.turklemd.com

INDIE HOME STYLE Story by Brooke Reynolds | Photos by Chris Whonsetler

What sparks your creativity, interior design and style? Alec and Jenny Tod look to vintage accessories, retro prints and even their dog, Indie, to bring their hipster style to an unassuming Fishers home. No one would call this ranch run of the mill. Let their DIY savvy and fresh take on design inspire your space.

51

WELCOME Walk through the front door of Alec and Jenny Tod’s home, and you’re immediately awakened by the aroma of coffee. They can’t wait to pour you a cup, made from freshly roasted south-CentralAmerican beans. “How do you take your coffee? You know it’s best black,” Alec teases, proud of his batch for which he handselected the beans and tastetested before serving.

The heartbeat of Jenny and Alec’s home evokes an overwhelming sense of welcome—from the in-house barista service, to the spare bedroom warmly decorated, to the love they’ve poured into the overall vibe of their the collective rooms.

THEIR STYLE Their design style is eclectic for sure. “It’s a combination of vintage, industrial and modern design inspired

52 kitindy.com March + April 2015

by our love for art and handmade things,” Jenny says. Many of their prized furniture pieces come from late grandparents’ homes or from the handiwork of their fathers. “Our best moments in this house have taken place when our friends and family are over,” Alec says. “Our door is always open. I love our house the most when it’s full of people.”

When the Tods have people over, the décor is an easy conversation-starter. Most people inquire about the chalkboard wall in their kitchen. They write grocery lists on it. They hang spice containers from it, and they’ve labeled the spices on the wall with chalk. Jenny, “a truly creative artist,” as her husband labels her, draws seasonal art at the top of the chalkboard wall.

A BIT OF BACKWOODS: Jenny showed her dad pictures of her vision for treetrunk side table. He cut down the lumber from a fallen tree, glazed it and gave it to Jenny and Alec for their living room.

WEDDING MEMORIES: The Tods' wedding theme had a modernized retro feel. A photo from the ceremony fits perfectly with the same theme in their home.

DISC JUNKIES: Alec and Jenny love their record collection. Alec's dad let him take what he wanted from his collection, and the favorites are now displayed on their wall. Their record player came from grandparents.

WALL STATEMENTS: It helps to be artistic. Jenny painted the ampersand hanging on the living room wall. The framed prints came from Vintage Indy Marketplace, a monthly market for vintage, antique and other items sold by locals.

OUTSIDE THE BOX: Indie, the Tods' miniature dachshund, has taken up residence in an old suitcase that was used as decor in Alec and Jenny's wedding. The pillow inside it was once on the living room couch. Indie took a liking to it and claimed it as his own.

CREATIVE BACKDROP: Alec and Jenny meticulously designed a 15-foot-tall accent wall in their living room with neat crosses. It took them 8 hours to mark every spot with a laser level, carefully lay down washi tape and use a hair dryer on each application to keep them in place.

Get down to business Alec Tod wears his heart on his tattoo sleeve. He loves coffee so much that he has a Chemex filtration brewing system tattooed on his left forearm. One year ago, Alec and Jenny started an artisan coffee-brewing business out of their home called Indie Coffee Roasters. Alec selects the beans, and they carry out small-batch testing of seasonal beans to ensure the besttasting coffee possible. Jenny is the creative genius behind the logo and packaging. Indie, their miniature dachshund, is the business’s namesake. The logo also has a retro feel, which is the type of design Jenny and Alec infiltrate into their style at home, too. The Tods brewed their first batch of coffee outside on a popcorn popper, and “it sucked,” they agreed vehemently. But since then, they’ve rotated in a new coffee flavor every month, depending on what beans are in season, and they always offer their two best-performing coffee flavors. “Before my coffee business, I was drinking 1.5 to 2 pounds of coffee a week,” Alec said. Now he’s glad to have turned his passion into a business, creating something that’s uniquely theirs.

Jenny graduated from Herron School of Art and Design and is now an Art Director at Element Three, a marketing and branding agency in Indianapolis—but her creativity doesn’t turn off at 5 p.m. She has and inherent an eye for seeing potential design, which is part of the reason why Jenny and Alec chose their house. They loved the high ceilings, big master bedroom and large fenced-in backyard. The community of Fishers drew them in to their current home, too. Their neighborhood is just down the road from downtown Fishers, where they frequent Riviera Maya, Sno World and the Fishers Farmers Market. They are members of the neighboring YMCA and attendees at nearby Northview Church, where Alec works as an IT coordinator. In this family, Jenny has the creative talent and Alec is more of the creative problemsolver. Their office space, while eye-catching and functional, took some creative problem-solving on Alec's part to bring it to fruition. The desk, which houses four computers so the couple can work side-by-side on their freelance projects, hangs from the wall thanks to six heavy-duty weight brackets. The other shelves hang high above the desks and hold a risky amount of weight as well. All these shelves were handcrafted and hung for less than $300 total. “I see our house evolving as we evolve and grow as individuals,” Jenny says. “Our home represents us as we are now. I see that changing and growing with us as we do.”

EXPERT ADVICE Q+A

Healthy gums, healthy heart?

How good periodontic care affects your cardiovascular health Implant Dentistry and Periodontics 9865 E. 116th St. Suite 100 Fishers, IN 46037 8801 N. Meridian Suite 103 Indianapolis, IN 46260 Call 317-842-2273 and mention Kit Magazine to schedule a consultation or to receive more information indyimplants.com

Q A

What is periodontics, and how is it different from standard dentistry?

Q A

What does a periodontist do exactly?

Periodontics involves the specialization of the structures surrounding the teeth, where standard dentistry traditionally involves focusing on the teeth themselves and preventing decay.

A periodontist is a dentist who specializes in the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of periodontal disease, and in the placement of dental implants. Periodontists are also experts in the treatment of oral inflammation. They’re familiar with the latest techniques for diagnosing and treating periodontal disease, and are also trained in cosmetic periodontal procedures.

Q

How exactly does improving your periodontic health reduce risks for heart disease?

A

Cardiovascular health involves many parallels to mouth health at the molecular level. Proteins that can be measured via a simple blood test can identify if there are high levels of inflammation in the body. Thus, decreasing the inflammation in the mouth is going to improve the body’s ability to fight inflammation elsewhere. Periodontitis is chronic inflammation, which is a state in which the body’s nonspecific immune system is revved up, lowering energy and increasing susceptibility to other diseases. People feel healthier and have more energy after periodontic treatment.

Q A

What other health issues can be affected by periodontic health?

For diseases like diabetes we see improvement in glucose levels after periodontal treatment. Meanwhile, diabetics are ADVERTORIAL

three times more likely to have periodontal disease because of their compromised healing potential. Studies show patients with arthritis (inflammation of the joints) have a higher incidence of periodontal disease. Other studies have shown that periodontal treatment decreases arthritis parameters such as pain and swollen, tender joints.

Q A

What can women do to improve their periodontic health?

Following through with recommended treatment is the best way to improve periodontal health. Treatment involves removing bacteria that are not reachable with any home remedies. Once healthy, women can see their dentist or periodontist for regular cleaning intervals. Home care is the second biggest factor in improving periodontal health. Flossing is just as important as brushing, because it disrupts the biofilm of plaque between the teeth and below the gumline where the brush can’t reach. Brushing and flossing twice a day with good technique will help keep your teeth healthy for a lifetime.

Q A

How do I know if I have a periodontic issue? Are there symptoms I should look for?

Q A

What questions should I ask my dentist or periodontist?

Bad breath or red color while spitting in the sink after brushing are the most common signs. Red tender gums are a clear indicator of inflammation. Also, if your gums have receded to the point that the root shows, you may have gum disease.

Many moderate to high-risk patients are often co-managed between the dentist and periodontist. Patents should ask, would my risk for decay and periodontal disease be lowered by being co-managed? 55

FRONT PORCH VIGNETTE

VINTAGE FLARE Rustic olive buckets from Hoosier Sister pair perfectly with faux lavender sprays from Allisonville Nursery.

Story by Cassie Perry | Photos by Chris Whonsetler

With spring knocking at our front door, it only makes sense to heat up our décor on the front porch. Just as a warm welcome awaits on the other side, the opportunity to make a lasting impression can start with the first step. Or in this case, maybe two steps up. Long gone are the holiday twinkling lights and festive feel that enveloped my front porch just a few months ago. Like many other homes in the area, it is left feeling rather drab and cold because, well, it has been—drab and cold. However, determined to transform this winterscape into a succulent escape, I called on my good friends at Hoosier Sister to bring some of their vintage whimsy to my front door. Next stop was Allisonville Nursery to peruse the faux perennials and lush lilacthemed inventory. Together, with some of my own items infused in the mix, a cozy and inviting space was in bloom. Gretchen Harter, co-owner at Hoosier Sister vintage finds, knew just what I was looking for (and always seems to nail it!) by lending me some amazing rustic olive buckets to fill with vibrant lavender sprays. I wove burlap yardage through the buckets to soften and cozy up the front entrance to my covered porch. As the sun starts to shine longer in the afternoon, I often enjoy watching my little ones run through the freshly cut grass. A cozy sitting area is the perfect spot to relax and try to bottle up their giggles. In my case, I have two areas to focus on. On the longer side of my porch, I utilized a timeless wooden bench seat and dressed it up with colorful pillows in poppy, navy and poolside blue shades. The water coolers tied in perfectly with both the orange color in the pillow, flowers and pattern in the wreath wrap (constructed out of an old plaid shirt and silk hair tie) on our lilac door wreath. The secret to creating a seamless, yet unique and visually appealing design is to blend colors that complement one another so as to not get too “matchy,” which can feel like a pop-up “store display.” Choose one primary

color you want to focus on and potentially two other less-dominant ones that you can use as accents in smaller snippets. If your porch happens to be sized for a more intimate seating area, a small end table and chair will flow with ease. My goal was to create a functional space that married two parts of the porch setting in this instance—one longer and one narrower. Keeping in mind the vision was “vintage meets fresh,” I chose rustic furniture as a starting point, added in a shiny splash of galvanized steel in the accessory pieces and finished it off with flowers that carry over the same bright poppy hue. As you begin the search for your own porch “spring me up” in the following weeks, don’t forget to search through household items you already have. You just might gain a new perspective—from any seat on the porch—on creating your own unique design this season.

OUTSIDE R&R After our frigid winter forced us indoors, cozy seating areas help you take in all the fresh air spring has to offer.

PATTERN MASHUP Add texture and color with a variety of solid and patterned throw pillows. They're inviting and lovely.

BLEND OF TIMES Start with some rustic items and then add in contemporary accents. It's a timeless friendship.

CURB APPEAL

DIY

TAKING YOUR PROJECTS OUTSIDE THE BOX.

A square of tidy boxwood makes a beautiful spring wreath. Cassie Perry offers three ways to dress yours.

1. TUCK IN SPRING BLOOMS To add in vibrant color, choose a faux flower such as this magenta sprig and layer pieces into the wreath. A favorite seasonal saying or personal address on a chalkboard frame is a fun way to add interest and charm.

2. WEAVE IN COLOR No faux flowers on hand? Keep the colored hues flowing by entwining bright yarn throughout. Add on the initial of your last name to close the door, or open it, with a personal statement.

3. STAMP IT OUT If sticking with a neutral pallet is more your style, pick up a piece of canvas banner and stamp your favorite saying, address or last name initial in a classic black color. Spruce it up with a trendy patterned ribbon or old belt that is sure to “stripe up” a conversation.

MASTERING COLOR PLACEMENT. The structural style of your home plays a role in how and where you use color to increase curb appeal. For example, Victorians can easily support four or more colors; modern designs work well with a two-tone treatment of a single color. Follow these painting tips to have them fall in love in at first sight. Garage: continuity rules Painting garage doors the same color as the house can make the house look bigger. To provide visual unity, paint the trim to match either the garage doors or the house trim. Windows: contrast tip Paint the window mullions and frames of a modern house with an accent color to add visual interest without shutters. Dormers can be enhanced with paint that’s a slightly different color than the rest of the house. Accent color: accessorize Paint a weathered garden bench a cheerful hue and surround it with colorful annuals. A trellis supporting a flowering vine can soften the home’s façade. Color can shine even during the long nights of winter—position spotlights to illuminate a colorful front door and adjacent evergreens. TYPE A MESSY

THROW A GIRL A BONE

Take a small piece from the outside of the right side and combine it with the inside of the left side. Repeat. NEXT-LEVEL LOCKS

For Cassie’s look, Katja first sprayed her hair with Sea Salt Spray to add texture and help the big curls stay in. To finish, gently pull the braid apart to mess it up a bit. WHERE TO WEAR

This messy braid is perfect for any casual outdoor activity. Wear it to the beach, on an outdoorsy date or to a summer concert. Fedora Hat from AH Collection Inc.

SPEAR HAPPY Recipe by Chef Will Osgood | Photo by Chris Whonsetler

R

It’s spring and vibrant, crisp asparagus spears are sprouting all across Central Indiana, from farmers markets to produce aisles. They are perfect on the side sautéed, blanched or stir fried. Or really please a crowd with this big-flavored appetizer from Chef Will Osgood of Pipers Restaurant in Indianapolis. (The sugar-cured bacon just might set you blissfully over the edge.)

RECIPE

KIT

ASPARAGUS ALLISON YIELD: 2 APPETIZERS (8 PIECES)

4 slices white bread 8 tablespoons Garlic Cream Cheese (recipe at right) 8 pieces asparagus, blanched 4 slices bacon, fried crisp* 1-2 tablespoons melted butter 1-2 teaspoons sesame seeds 1 Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Cut crusts off of bread and roll flat (like a tortilla) using a rolling pin. Spread bread evenly and liberally with Garlic Cream Cheese.

GARLIC CREAM CHEESE

8 ounces cream cheese, softened 7 tablespoons butter, softened 1-2 teaspoons crushed or pureed garlic 11/2 teaspoons chopped parsley 1 /2 teaspoon dried dill weed 1 /4 teaspoon white pepper 1 tablespoon mayonnaise 1 Blend all ingredients together with small mixer, or by hand. Refrigerate to store. Great on wraps and sandwiches. *Chef Osgood reccomends sugar-cured, thick-cut bacon.

2 Cut blanched asparagus spears in half so that each slice of bread will get 2 pieces. Place crosswise on the bread. 3 Break bacon in half, so that each bread slice gets 2 half pieces of bacon, or 1 whole strip. Place on top of asparagus. 4 Roll up bread, making sure asparagus and bacon are inside the bread rollup. Make sure the cream cheese seals the roll. 5 Place seam side down on baking sheet and brush with melted butter. Sprinkle with sesame seeds and bake at 375 degrees until golden brown. 6 Remove from oven and cut in half diagonally. Serve 4 pieces per plate. Can accompany with freshly grated horseradish in sour cream.
