West Coast born. Midwest raised. The Vine Series
Introducing three new varietal wines to the Oliver family. As with any of our wines, the story begins in the vineyard. These wines are no exception to our philosophy of fruit forward wines that express the varietal characteristics of the grapes from which they are made. From our luxuriously sweet Moscato, to our superb Chardonnay, to the complex flavors of our Dry Red Blend, there is something here for everyone.

PUBLISHER’S NOTE
HOME DEC analysis paralysis After this long, cold winter, my husband and I were really excited to begin working on our outdoor space. My family moved into our home a couple years ago. We love it here. The house has strong bones, big pantries and plenty of closets. It’s on a wonderful lot in a rambling neighborhood, but it still needs some TLC. We updated major things right away—windows, siding, heating and air conditioning—but after the first wave of improvements, we’ve struggled to get anything else done. Simply put, I have trouble making decisions. Instead of moving ahead decisively, I talk about what I’d like to do and look at endless magazines to gather ideas. Then I become paralyzed when faced with so many choices and options. The outdoor space was an area I knew we would thrive in, if I could just pull the trigger on a direction that suited our budget. I worried about the costs involved in hiring professionals, but I’m so happy we did. In the long run, relying on the pros saved us time and money by helping us make the right decisions the first time. As with most things, having someone who confidently knows what they’re doing guide you through the process makes life so much easier!
photograph by Hether miles
Now, we love our updated porch (see page 35). It’s nothing fancy, but it’s amazing how paint, comfy furniture, a landscape plan and finishing touches from a decorator have transformed our space. It’s the perfect place to find a little peace, entertain friends or browse all those home magazines I seem to be collecting. My family is so excited about the results that we’ve decided to keep the momentum going by updating the front porch, too. Special thanks to the wonderful companies who helped us—Marean Roberts Interior Design, CertaPro Painters and Sundown Gardens. Get outside and make the most of the season!

Lane Change
Local brewer finds her happy hour By Lindahl Wiegand + photos by Chris whonsetler

E
ilise Lane was steadily moving up the corporate ladder in a comfortable insurance job, but her heart wasn’t in it. When her husband, Nick Servies, asked what made her happy, they both laughed when she responded, “Well, I’m really obsessed with beer.” A seed was planted, and while traveling and tasting microbrews in Oregon, the seed grew into a hops plant. “I tried a coconut stout that changed my world and said, I have to have this again, and I want to make it myself,” Eilise says. When she asked if the brewer was in, she heard three words that would inspire her: “No, she’s not.” Eilise bought a home brew kit. She went back to school for fermentation sciences, and then packed up and moved from Indiana to Oregon. After spending six years homebrewing and shadowing experts in some of her favorite Oregon breweries, she completed an apprenticeship with the American Brewer’s Guild. She then wrote a business plan and moved back to Indiana. “I learned a lot while living in the Northwest. Not just about beer, but about how to live my life and give back. I wanted to bring that back to my community in Indiana,” she says. One coconut stout and seven years later, Scarlet Lane Brewing Company officially launched in McCordsville, Ind.

The first brewers Today, the craft beer business is fairly male dominated, with women making up just 29 percent of brewery workforces. Eilise was one of two women in her apprenticeship program. But history tells a different story. From the Amazon to Egypt to England, women were the first brewers. “It was truly a woman’s craft. We were just left out of the business for a while,” Eilise says. “Not that men aren’t wonderful brewers, but it’s great to see and meet more women who are getting into it. I love seeing all these strong women support each other.”
What’s on tap When Scarlet Lane opens its doors, Eilise and her team will be filling growlers with three delicious beers, with a seasonal release always in rotation. Eilise offers her tasting notes. Vivian Red IPA. “This is our flagship beer. I wanted something sweet and caramel-ly to back up the big, hoppy notes characteristic of an IPA.” Dorian Stout. “There’s always going to be a stout in rotation—something approachable anyone can enjoy. My girlfriends used to be so scared of stouts. Now we go out and they all order dark beer!” Saison De Silas. “We brought in a different brewer to focus on developing a saison. I wanted to keep it light, easy to drink, spicy notes with a bit of lemon.”
16 kitindy.com May+ June 2014
A taste of what’s to come In the near future, you’ll be able to buy pints of Scarlet Lane brews at area restaurants and bars. The brewery also plans to open its tasting room this summer. Eilise says the environment will be cozy and laid-back with a late-1800s, pre-Prohibition feel. Award-winning Head Brewer Chris Knott, former head brewer at Ram Restaurant & Brewery in downtown Indianapolis, and a tight-knit team of friends supports Eilise at Scarlet Lane. “We just want to make really awesome beer. We came together to start a business and to have fun with each other and everyone we meet on this journey,” she says. ❍

family Empty Nest
Rewrite your future
finding fulfillment in an empty nest By tracy line + ILLUSTRATION BY WIL FOSTER
T
here was a time, long, long ago when you really couldn’t picture this moment. Standing in your living room, surrounded by Tonka trucks, Lego bricks and Barbie’s pink tutu, you couldn’t fathom a house without children in it. Couldn’t imagine not wiping sticky fingers 10 times a day, tying neon shoelaces or cutting someone else’s steak before you could sit down to eat your own. In fact, there were likely days you wished your children would just grow up. Now that day has arrived. Your oldest is getting married next summer and your youngest will be headed to college in the fall. Meanwhile you’ll be still here. No more toys, no sticky hands, no demands on your time. Finally you have the freedom you’ve longed for, but yet all you want to do is hit rewind and go back.
Empty nest syndrome
There’s a name for this feeling and period in your life. Empty nest syndrome is a time of mourning or depression that occurs when the youngest child moves out of the family home. According to Carin Rubenstein, PhD and author of Beyond the Mommy Years: How to Live Happily Ever… After the Kids Leave Home, a recent study found 10 percent of all women (and some men) experience long-term emotional upheaval when the last child moves out. It’s really no surprise. As parents, we dedicate the majority of our time to taking care of, fretting over, and talking about our children. To say they’re an enormous part of our lives is, well, an understatement. Like the death of a loved one or going through a divorce, empty nest is characterized by feelings of loss or sadness. One often feels out of sorts, depressed or confused about what’s next in life. If you’re experiencing empty nest, it’s important to acknowledge your feelings. They are a normal reaction to this transition into the next phase of life and parenthood. “Empty nest is a grieving process,” says Linda Elliott, a licensed mental health counselor and Executive Director at Living With Intention, a medical and counseling group in Fishers. Elliott has worked with numerous clients who experienced extreme sadness when their children moved out. For many, she explains, empty nest is a stage stemming from a loss of purpose in life. “It’s a depressed mood we go through,” she says. While our children are ready to move on, we feel left behind.
18 kitindy.com May+ June 2014
Those who have been the primary caregiver for their children may experience it more deeply. Having invested nearly 20 years into raising their children, they are now faced with a blank slate. “It’s the only job in the world whereby if we are successful, we’re left unemployed,” Elliott jokes. But there’s no need to keep your slate blank; it’s just a matter of rewriting your future. Use the following techniques to help you get through empty nest and discover the joys in this new phase of your life.
Stat: Ten percent of all women (and some men) experience long-term emotional upheaval when the last child moves out. Taking steps to mitigate the pain can help prevent you from becoming a statistic.

Where Home and Garden Meet
family Empty Nest
Keep family ties tight Your young adults are out of the house, making it even more difficult to communicate—as if it were easy when they did live under your roof. They are experiencing their own sense of freedom, so meet them where they are to make staying in touch easier. Use technology Making a smartphone call is so old school, so try texting, Twitter, Google Hangout, Facebook, Skype or whatever technology your child prefers. Doing so will increase her likelihood to maintain communication. Don’t forget snail mail Who doesn’t love to get personal mail? Even as your child is busy living his own life, he’ll appreciate knowing you’re thinking of him. It’s a low-key way to express your love. Give bribery a shot Nothing speaks to the heart of a young person like food and fun. Invite her for a home-cooked meal, meet for appetizers at her favorite pub or offer to take her to a movie or theater production. It certainly worked for my parents when I was a young adult.
1
Develop a plan while the nest is full. We know our children will eventually leave. Elliott suggests we prepare in advance. “Depression and anxiety come when we don’t have a plan,” she says, “when we feel out of control.” Start envisioning what life sans children will be like before they leave. Think about what the days will look like, how you might feel and how you’ll want to spend your time. A plan will help you look toward the future instead of dwelling on the past.
2
Allow yourself to feel sad. “Give yourself grace,” Elliott says. Oftentimes we try to talk ourselves out of our feelings. Sadness and depression are natural emotions. We need to feel them to get through them. For many, the first year is the hardest. But don’t set a time limit on your emotions. Admit your feelings, know they will pass, and remember it’s ok to shed a tear now and then.
3
Talk it out and listen. One of the best ways to work through our emotions is to talk about them. Spill your guts to a close friend, or discuss your sadness with a peer going through the same situation. Ask your mom how she felt when you left home. You’re not the first empty nester; instead of trying to reinvent the wheel, learn how to cope from those who’ve been through it. A counselor can help if your can’t find relief on your own.
4
Remember who you were. Surely you did something before you started changing diapers, helping with homework and driving everyone everywhere they needed to be. Who was that girl? What did she do in her spare time? Find her and bring her back. Now is the time to go back to school, volunteer, focus on your career. Joy can be found in so many places. So go on, the world is waiting for you.
5
Reinvent your relationships. An empty nest can be hardest on those who have lost connection with their spouse. So many of us envelop ourselves in the role of parent, employee and daughter. We’ve forgotten how to be a partner. The man you married isn’t just a dad. He’s your other half. Go find him. Tear him away from the garage, the yard or ESPN and take him out to dinner. Single moms can now reconnect with family and friends. If you aren’t putting yourself out there, consider dating again (remember, you no longer have a curfew). Regardless of your marital status, Elliott suggests connecting with others through activities you enjoy. Whether it’s traveling, dining out, or simply walking the dog, do it
20 kitindy.com May+ June 2014
with people who matter the most to you. Great freedom comes with having children out of the house. If you’re married, focus on reconnecting with the man you fell in love with so long ago. If you’re single, recognize the fact that you now have the freedom to do whatever you want.
6
Embrace the good and the freedom. You may feel sad now, but statistics show you won’t forever. A recent article in Time magazine stated that second to childless couples, empty nesters are the happiest of couples. Consider the positives of having your children gone. First of all, you can quit worrying about, waiting up for and picking up after your teenagers. You can take a backseat to being responsible for them. “If I’ve done my job well, they’re prepared,” says Elliott, “and I don’t have to obsess anymore. I am free from the day-to-day worries.” Secondly, for the first time in a long time, you can put yourself first. The days belong to you. No more orthodontist appointments, school functions or volunteering to work the concession stand at football games. This is the time to take those piano lessons, spend an entire Saturday reading in your pajamas or dance naked in the family room (just because you can). Best of all, now you can enjoy watching your children fly. Grow. Become. As the mother of three adult children, Elliott adds, “Adult relationships with your children can be marvelous, it’s so rewarding.” All the reward without the day-to-day worry: Sounds like a gift to me. m

New ThermiRF Eliminates Fat and Tightens Skin without Surgery CAN BE USED ON ANY PART OF THE BODY
I
ncreasingly, patients seek non- invasive, or minimally invasive procedures that do not require them to take time from work or their daily schedules for recovery. ThermiRF is a new FDA-cleared non-surgical device that uses radiofrequency (RF) energy to stimulate collagen and to address wrinkle reduction, body contouring and skin tightening of the face, neck and body. The major benefit of this technology is that it can be done in the office setting without the need for anesthesia and with minimal to no downtime. ThermiRF delivers radiofrequency energy through a cannula that is inserted under the patient’s skin. The cannula heats the tissue beneath the skin, melting the fat and preparing it for excretion from the body. The heat from the cannula also stimulates collagen production beneath the skin, correcting the skin laxity that commonly occurs after fat reduction and age. The patient is numbed and able to relax and be comfortable during the treatment. The treatments use “temperature-controlled” radiofrequency to make it more comfortable. Because the temperature can be adjusted, the doctor is able to calculate the frequency level to fit the area of the body being contoured. Over time, the treated area fat cells are drained through the lymphatic system and eventually are removed through your body as urine. The treatment results will continue to improve and look better during the first three to six months. During this time, the skin continues to tighten and new collagen is forming. The ThermiRF treatment provides excellent results in areas that previously were difficult to treat with other methods. The procedure can be used to tighten skin on the face, neck, chest and arms. For contouring and fat reduction, we can use it on the abdomen, backs, thighs, buttocks and any fat pockets throughout your body. We can also use this treatment in conjunction with other procedures such as injectables. The treatments generally take less than one hour. After the procedure, some patients may experience a small amount of swelling or redness, but this usually will disappear in a few hours. More than one treatment may be necessary to obtain optimal results. An ideal candidate for ThermiRF has stubborn pockets of excess fat on their body that have not responded to diet and exercise. The patient should be in good health with no underlying conditions. There are several treatment options available with ThermiRF including the ThermiLift to lift, tighten and rejuvenate the lower face and neck; ThermiTight to lift, tighten and rejuvenate the abdomen, arms and other body areas, and for cellulite reduction; and ThermiSmooth to smooth wrinkles.

EXPERT ADVICE Q+A
The pain of being in pain Dr. Stephen Elliott of Living with Intention, Inc. discusses ways to cope with pain without the use of chronic pain medication.
Living with Intention, Inc. 11979 Fishers Crossing Drive, Fishers, IN 46038 For an appointment, call (317) 863-5888 LivingWithIntention.biz
Chronic pain (CP) facts: In 2011, CP cost the U.S. somewhere between $560 to 635 billion. That’s about $2,000 for every single man, woman and child alive today. 42 percent of those with CP are unable to work. 63 percent can’t even manage daily activities like bathing, dressing, grooming, etc. 20 percent of all American adults report that pain frequently disrupts their sleep. 86 percent of those with CP report sleep problems. According to a 2006 survey, 51 percent of CP sufferers report little or no control over their pain.
Q A
As I get older, I feel like I’m getting more aches and pains. Is that normal? No—chronic pain is not a normal part of aging.
Q A
Almost everyone I know has pain. Am I imagining this?
Not at all. More than 100 million Americans suffer chronic pain. That’s more than diabetes, heart disease and cancer combined. It truly is a national health crisis. (For more chronic pain facts, see box.)
Q A
Sometimes I don’t think my doctor takes my pain seriously. What’s going on?
If you’re a woman, you’re not alone. There’s a significant gender bias here. More women than men seek medical care for pain, but are less likely to receive treatment. Many physicians discount women’s pain complaints as being emotional rather than real. But even if you’re not a woman, many physicians haven’t been adequately trained in pain management. Others are afraid of over prescribing” pain medications, being seen as a “candy man/ woman,” and running the risk of losing their licenses.
Q A
Why do I feel like my pain makes me so exhausted?
Because it does. Chronic pain has lots of effects, all bad. Feeling tired is just one of them. Others include insomnia, increased sense of stress, depression, irritability, anxiety, difficulty fighting infection, increased risk of cancer, hormonal imbalances, and GI problems.
24 kitindy.com May+June 2013
Q
Besides taking pills, what can I do?
A
Medications (prescription, over-thecounter, or both) rarely adequately treat chronic pain. There’s a vast and growing body of evidence supporting the use of alternative therapies — meditation, massage, stretching, acupuncture, biofeedback, relaxation, visualization, electro-magnetic stimulation with new devices like SCENAR, even simple breathing exercises and changing what you eat. This really is a classic example of optimal health being a mind-body-spirit thing.
Q
What I eat can make a difference?
A
Absolutely! Our Standard American Diet (or SAD, for short — pretty appropriate, I think) is incredibly inflammatory, and most common pain is the result of chronic inflammation. I’ve seen it over and over again — dramatic improvement simply by changing your diet.
Q
And breathing, too? What’s that about?
A
This one, along with meditation, is particularly difficult for us materialistic-“scientific”-Western-culture-types to wrap our brains around. Some even believe this sort of thing is anti-Christian. Nothing could be further from the truth. It’s evidence-based, and it works. Living with Intention, Inc. was awarded the 2013 Fishers Chamber of Commerce Pillar Award for Excellence in the area of Entrepreneurial Spirit.

Annual Pap smears aren’t necessary, and they don’t screen for everything. You don’t need an annual Pap test, according to the American Cancer Society. The new guidelines stipulate: • Up to age 21: No Pap test is necessary. Whoop! • Ages 21-29: You need to get a Pap every three years. • Ages 30-65: You’re due for a Pap smear and HPV (Human Pappillomavirus) test every five years or a Pap alone every three years. • Ages 65 and over: No more Pap smears if there is no history of serious cervical disease. Who said getting older was all bad? No matter how old you are, you’re never completely off the hook. A Pap smear screens only for cervical cancer. “You still need to have a pelvic exam every year,” says Dr. Cameual Wright of Noblesville’s OB/GYN Specialists of Indiana, part of Riverview Medical Group. “The pelvic exam looks at the vulva, cervix, uterus, fallopian tubes, ovaries, bladder and rectum for any abnormalities or possible disease,” says Dr. Susan Benson of St. Vincent OB/ GYN Services in the McCordsville/Geist area.
2
The rate of sexually transmitted diseases among people 45 and older is skyrocketing. In 2011, the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention identified more than 37,000 cases of gonorrhea, syphilis and chlamydia in people ages 45 and older. A 2008 study in the journal Sexually Transmitted Infections showed that in less than a decade (1996-2003), STD rates had more than doubled in this age group, blaming the increase in part on the fact that more adults are divorced and single, which results in new and more sexual partners. Dr. Wright says chlamydia is the most common infection, followed by HPV. HPV is spread through sexual contact and can lead to genital warts, abnormal cervical cells or cervical cancer. “Ninety percent of sexually active people have been exposed to HPV, and most of those are young people,” says Dr. Wright. “Young people have a robust immune system and are able to clear the virus, but as we age we are less likely to clear the virus.” When women are unable to clear the virus, they develop active HPV, which puts them at greater risk for cervical cancer.
3
Abnormal uterine bleeding is common. According to Dr. Benson, abnormal bleeding is the No. 1 reason women seek care other than preventive care in most practices. “There are a lot of options for treatment depending on what the problem actually is and what stage of life the woman is in,” she says. “Sometimes abnormal bleeding happens and it is just normal, although it seems abnormal, and requires only watchful waiting.” Hormone therapy, such as the use of birth control pills, patches, injections or vaginal suppositories, also effectively controls bleeding in certain cases, says Dr. Benson. A progesterone IUD can provide relief for up to five years. Growing in popularity is the endometrial ablation, a simple outpatient procedure typically requiring just local injections and light sedation. “It has a very high success and satisfaction rate and eliminates the periods for good. The beauty is it does not affect the woman’s hormones at all. It is virtually painless, and the women are back to work the next day. It saves a lot of women from having a hysterectomy, which is the final option,” Dr. Benson says.
4
Sex should feel good. The Center for Vulvovaginal Disorders in Washington, D.C. estimates that 20 million American women will have sexual pain disorders at some point in their lives. This often occurs during menopause because of vaginal atrophy due to the lack of estrogen being produced. But painful intercourse shouldn’t be the norm. Over-thecounter lubricants can provide some relief. There are also topical estrogen creams, suppositories and an oral medication available with a prescription from your doctor. The bottom line is do not suffer in silence or avoid sex; talk to your physician.
5
There are lots of birth control options. The formulation for birth control pills has changed,” Dr. Wright says. “The newer pills on the market offer a shorter and significantly lighter period, and many women don’t have a period at all,” she says. “The NuvaRing is a device that goes in the vagina. You put it in for three weeks and then take it out for a week and then put another one in,” Dr. Wright explains. The NuvaRing releases a continuous low dose of hormones to prevent eggs from maturing and releasing from the fallopian tubes.
She recommends women “limit your sexual partners, take an appropriate sexual history and protect yourself with condoms.” (In other words, follow the same advice you would give your own daughter.)
Through a shot in the arm, Depo-Provera continuously releases progestin to keep eggs from being released from the ovaries. “It has been around for a long time, lasts for three months and is very effective,” Dr. Wright says.
I bet you’re worried. I was worried. I was worried about vaginas. I was worried about what we think about vaginas, and even more worried that we don’t think about them.
Another option is Nexplanon, a matchstick-sized implant that goes in the upper arm and provides three years of pregnancy prevention by continuously releasing progestin. Dr. Wright says there are three IUDs currently on the market as well.

EXPERT ADVICE Q+A
Julie Schnieders, MSN, NP is a women’s health nurse practitioner with extensive experience in women’s health. She has a special interest in menopause and pelvic health, and is a breast risk assessment consultant for the St.Vincent Breast Center.
WOMEN’S HEALTH Q&A
Julie Schnieders, MSN, NP, answers some common questions about health symptoms that women shouldn’t ignore.
Q A
Do women often dismiss or downplay their symptoms when something is wrong?
Yes, definitely. I see a lot of women worrying about something, but not following through with checking it out. Or, thinking that if something’s wrong, the doctor will catch it during an annual exam.
Q
Is there a good rule of thumb to follow about deciding when it’s time to call the doctor?
A
Women are caretakers. We get so busy taking care of everybody else and making sure their needs are met, we end up putting ourselves last. Sometimes it’s a case of denial.
If a symptom is present for longer than two weeks, it needs to be checked out. Of course, certain symptoms require immediate attention or a trip to the emergency room. Such as: Heart attack symptoms can present much differently in women than men, and may include fatigue, nausea, shortness of breath, shoulder pain or back pain. The worst headache ever needs to be evaluated quickly. You should also seek immediate attention if you notice any sign of a stroke—uneven smile, weakness on one side of the body, dizziness or slurred speech.
Q A
Q A
Q A
Why do we do this?
What are a few of the most common health symptoms that women tend to ignore?
A cough that won’t go away, especially if you’re a non-smoker; 20 percent of all lung cancers are found in non-smokers. Lingering fatigue could indicate anemia or a thyroid problem. Any kind of breast changes—a lump obviously needs to be investigated, but also thickening, redness or unilateral pain. Bloating that lasts for more than two weeks could be irritable bowel syndrome; you want to make sure it’s not an ovarian issue. Headaches are a common complaint, and need to be worked up so they can be treated the right way. Post-menopausal bleeding; if you haven’t had a period in 12 months and you start bleeding, it needs to be evaluated. Blood in the stool may just be a hemorrhoid, but needs a work up. These are all examples of issues women tend to ignore.
34 kitindy.com May+ June 2014
What will a doctor want to know about your symptoms?
It depends what the symptoms are, but doctors will want to know when the symptoms started, how severe they are and what, if anything, you’ve done to treat them.
Q A
What can happen if women wait too long to seek treatment?
If symptoms go unchecked, they can develop into much bigger problems. Eighty percent of heart disease is preventable with lifestyle changes, and the earlier breast cancer is discovered, the better your chances of survival. If a symptom comes on suddenly or is severe, making a trip to the ER could save your life.

It doesn’t have to cost a fortune to give your outdoor space a new look photos BY chris whonsetler

it publisher Kelly McVey and her husband, Mike, moved into their home a few years ago but never did much to their porch and patio. They were waiting until the time was right to give their outdoor living space a complete overhaul, and after this year’s horrible winter, they realized they couldn’t put it off any longer. With only a small budget to work with, Kelly and Mike asked their friend and decorator Marean Roberts with By Design to help them put together a plan. The only requirements: keep the budget under $3,000, the chairs must be comfortable and have movement (rock or swivel), and a versatile conversation table was a necessity. In the end, the total bill rang up to less than $3,000. “It’s amazing what a little color, paint, landscaping and finishing touches from a decorator can do for a space,” Kelly said. “It’s just perfect for our small family.” Hank, the family bulldog, heartily agrees, and now spends his days lying around the sunny porch with his family.

Caregiving 101
Part VI
A few final thoughts As our Kit Caregiving 101 series winds down, our local panel of sources reflects on their own experiences, and offers helpful words of wisdom to other caregivers. by Amy Lynch
Presented by
40 kitindy.com May+June 2014
Kate Kunk, RN, CIRS-A, Caregiver Options Counselor at CICOA Aging & In-Home Solutions: In 2008, I relocated to Indianapolis (a six-hour drive from Knoxville, where my mother lived in assisted living). My brother was the primary caregiver, and I knew she would continue to receive great care, so she probably wasn’t affected much by my departure. However, in leaving her, not only did I realize the complexities of navigating resources and systems from a distance, I also came to appreciate the special kind of grief unique to those of us who feel like we can’t do enough. I had to learn to accept the limitations of my role, to be present as often as possible and to savor every moment with her. Beth Gehlhausen, Executive Director, Meals on Wheels of Hamilton County: I haven’t been a direct caregiver, but have witnessed first-hand as my mom has provided care to both of my grandparents and now to my stepdad who is suffering from Alzheimer’s. There are so many plates spinning, and she has kept them all going with grace, a positive attitude and determination— providing great care; handling the insurance, doctor’s appointments and personal care; running the household and many other things. It’s imperative that those who have transitioned (usually very quickly) into a caregiving role have a support system, take time out for themselves and gather as much information about available resources as possible. Having someone to talk to who will just listen and be supportive is such a gift for a caregiver. Tina McIntosh, Founder and President of Joy’s House Adult Day Service: I am surrounded by caregiving— it was part of my childhood and it followed me as I became an adult. Fifteen years ago, I was the primary caregiver for my biological father. After that, I started Joy’s House and became a professional caregiver. I have three children. I host a local radio program called Caregiver Crossing, which focuses on the journey of caring for another. Two years ago I was the recipient of caregiving, as I made my way through breast cancer. And two days before this past Christmas, my husband was diagnosed with kidney cancer. My best advice is to embrace the imbalance. Some days, we are incredible in one area of our lives and lacking in another. After that, our scale tips. We can’t be everything to everyone at every moment, but we can be great where we are.

Pat Fox, President and CEO of Riverview Hospital: As a nurse, I know there is no greater joy than being able to help someone in need. While the struggles can be tough on our patients, they can also be hard on their loved ones. For this reason, taking the time to answer their questions and support them is critical. As a recent caregiver to an elderly parent, I remember the emotional journey of guilt, hope, joy and compassion that comes with the experience. Whether it’s cooking a meal, grocery shopping or caring for a loved one following surgery, the demands placed on caregivers can be substantial. Together as a community, we need to support caregivers to let them know first, and most importantly, they are not alone. Maureen Lindley, Vice President of Marketing, Flanner and Buchanan Funeral Centers: Within the past year, I have begun laying the groundwork to serve as a caregiver for my parents. They are in relatively good health and still live in their home. We have updated their will and advance directives, and added my name to their safety deposit box. We’ve also selected and pre-paid all cemetery costs, and we’re working on funeral pre-arrangements. It’s been a process and we’ve taken our time making these big decisions. Thanks to ongoing conversations about their wishes as they age, we’ve felt very little pressure. They’re relieved to mark these items off their list, and I feel good knowing that when we need these services, they’re already in place. Marc Adamson, Administrator, Hancock Regional Home Health: As a physical therapist, I’ve seen many situations in home settings. I have yet to find myself providing care for an aging loved one, but we most likely will all find ourselves faced with a situation where we will be a caregiver or provide support to someone who is. The best advice I can offer is to take initiative in your loved one’s medical care. While the caregiving role can be uncomfortable at times and require difficult conversations, the value and improved outcomes that can result are well worth the awkwardness. Protecting your overall mental and physical well-being by seeking assistance or support services when needed will improve the care you provide, and potentially strengthen your relationship. Carol Applegate, Nurse, Elder Law Attorney and Owner of Applegate Elder Law: I cared for my father as he made his journey through dementia and Alzheimer’s—a long slow process that lasted for more than 10 years until his death five years ago. I am now caregiving for my mother, who lives in an assistedliving facility. As an elder law attorney, I assist other caregivers on a daily basis, but dealing with my own family is totally different. I experience the same feelings and frustrations as any other caregiver. Building a team and planning for the future journey is vital. Caregivers need emotional and physical support throughout the process, and caregivers need each other. There are others out there who truly want to help. You just need to call on them. m 42 kitindy.com May+June 2014

A few thoughts on the space Feel: Outdoor living spaces are an extension of our “four walls” inside and should serve as a seamless extension of your indoor space, as if only another door were to separate the two “rooms.” To achieve this, stick with a color scheme and furniture that complement the interior style of the home, e.g., a traditional space may call for a timeless, simple all-weather wicker set. On the other end of the spectrum, a contemporary or transitional home might demand a sleeker, streamlined look in order to stay consistent with the interior of the home. Color: With the feel of the space in mind, choosing a color palette for the furniture is easy for me because I know that if I stick with a neutralcolored cushion, it will complement any pillow or accessory I select as the seasons change. It’s hard to invest a lot of money in any seating area— inside or out—without wondering if you’ll regret a bold color in a few years. Switching up pillows and throws when your mood shifts is a lot less costly than recovering or replacing lots of cushions. In this particular color set, I chose a poppy orange to round out the bold navy of the home; it’s a fresh, fun pop. Several of my accessories inside the home also complement this color combination, so I can easily bring a few pieces outside while entertaining—fluidity is a key factor. Finds: Before I design a space, I gather an idea folder of the looks I love from several design blogs, retail websites, etc. (Crate & Barrel is featured here, for example.) And then I take inventory of what I currently have that will transition and fill in the “blanks.” Adding a chalkboard frame with a fun summer saying to greet guests is a versatile idea that can be used regardless of season or style changes. Slip casual photos into inexpensive frames that can bear the pollen, dust and weather. It’s a simple way to make the outdoor space carry through the charm that is behind the door that leads inside.

5. 1. A deep tray serves double duty. First, use it to carry drinks and
nibbles from the kitchen to the porch. And second, fill it with candles to light up a dim space. 2. Pair a rustic piece with a more dainty one to bridge outdoor and indoor decor. 3. Make it personal with family photos. Just be sure you have doubles, in case the weather wreaks havoc. 4. Add punches of color with transitional details such as florals, pillows or summery throws. 5. This personalized chalkboard is so welcoming and—who would have guessed—is hiding an outdoor TV. 6. A firepit can be a simple DIY project. quick tips to improve your master bath before showing your house:
1. Clear counter tops of clutter, but leave a display of perfume or a nice decorative piece. Anything SPA like. 2. Don’t hang your day-to-day towels for a showing, unless you use those big fluffy spa like towels. Purchase a couple for “showing purpose only”. They don’t have to be expensive, just look it. 3. Candles around a whirlpool tub are always inviting. 4. Fold and stack your towels, blankets and sheets to be neat in your linen closet. Keep cabinets tidy, too. These details will speak to the overall care of your home when you take the time to keep these areas organized. 5. Keep your rugs clean and fresh on the floors. If you have beautiful tile, the less is better. Show off the assets of our bath.

What would Jodi wear this season? Jodi Pierrot of Middle Sister Style offers up a list of her favorite things
Jodi’s pic kups from The Fashio n Mall at Keystone

other Nature hasn’t been too kind to us this year, and she seems to be very fickle! One day it’s beautiful, sunny and warm; the very next day, it’s snowing. With that in mind, we have to be flexible with our wardrobes. Layers and dresses are staples in my repertoire this time of year, and several new pieces have already made their way into my closet. I’ve also picked up a couple pairs of sandals that are right on trend, and my new handbag and a fresh spring scent get me in the mood for warmer days ahead. These are a few of my favorite things. By Jodi Pierrot + photos by Chris Whonsetler 60 kitindy.com May+ June 2014
LA Made Maxi
Dresses: LA Made Maxi Dress
Jodi says: “I love navy and stripes—what better way to showcase them than on a maxi dress? I found this steal of a dress on Piperlime.com during one of their big sales. I love the fabric and how it drapes perfectly on the body, just skimming the floor. I plan on wearing this dress with my Tory Burch flip flops and a denim jacket (both featured here) as we transition from spring to summer.”
Chevron/neon
Jodi says: “I’m a firm believer that if you find something you love, you should buy it in multiple colors. This neon/chevron maxi dress, also from One by Pink Stitch, will look great this summer with a nice tan. I plan to wear this with my denim jacket and Tory Burch flip flops, and it will be perfect as a cover up as well.” Floral Shift Dress

Chevron/Neon
Jodi says: “I’ve been hunting for a dress that I can wear for multiple occasions. I found this shift at Anthropologie, and the minute I tried it on, I was sold. It’s not too short and not too long, flowy and comfortable. An ideal choice for work, summer date nights and summer weddings (with the right shoes, of course). To make the dress more casual, I’ll throw on my denim jacket and flip flops.”

Jodi says: “If you’ve been reading my features for a while now, you’re well aware of my love for leopard prints. I found this adorable (and very affordable) maxi dress on shopbop.com as I was shopping for clothes to wear on a vacation to San Francisco. I love how chic the dress looks, and it’s also comfortable. I’m sure this item will be on regular rotation for me this spring and summer. During the cooler months of spring, and even on those rare cool summer nights, this dress pairs nicely with a denim jacket.”

Outerwear:
Cardigan by Bordeaux
Cardigan by Bordeaux
Jodi says: “I’m always looking for a good lightweight cardigan, and when I spotted this one at Anthropologie, I had to have it. I’ve worn this with a tank top, my favorite skinny ankle jeans and ballet flats, and I plan on wearing it this spring with my snakeskin Tory Burch sandals. It’s a versatile piece that truly can be worn all year round.”
Banana Republic sleeve jacket
Jodi says: “I love a great Chanel-style jacket, like this one by Banana Republic. I wear this with my Theory ivory sleeveless blouse and J. Crew “Minnie” pants for work. For a more casual look, I pair it with a gray short-sleeve t-shirt by Madewell and my favorite skinny ankle jeans. This jacket will be a staple for years to come thanks to its timeless design.”
Denim jacket by Mother Denim
Jodi says: “It’s worth investing in a great denim jacket. I’ve had the same one for years and kept my eyes open for a new one while I was in San Francisco on a girls’ trip. The key to a great denim jacket is to look for a fitted style as opposed to one that looks too boxy. I roll the cuffs and put the collar up to add a little extra touch of chic. I’ll wear this with everything all spring and summer, and even into fall.”
Peplum striped jacket by Free People
Jodi says: “How can you not love a jacket with peplum and stripe details? I wouldn’t typically think to look at Free People for a jacket like this, but it was on display at Nordstrom and I couldn’t resist trying it on. I always try to purchase items that are multifunctional, so I can get the most wear for my money—this jacket is perfect for work and play. I wear it with my skinny black pants and snakeskin ballet flats for work, or I throw on my favorite white t-shirt and skinny ankle jeans to wear it for play.”

Sandals: Ankle strap/buckle by Louise et cie
Jodi says: “I discovered this new designer at Nordstrom; she’s the wife of Vince Camuto, who also designs fabulous shoes. What do I love about these sandals? Everything! Ankle straps and buckle details are trendy this season, and this sandal has both. The heel is just right with ankle jeans, dresses, work pants and more. And it’s comfortable, which makes me love it even more.”

Jodi says: “It’s no secret, I’m slightly obsessed with Tory Burch shoes. The quality is amazing and the styles are always on point. The bow detail of this classic patent leather nude thong sold me. Bows are another big trend this season, and this sweet little sandal showcases them perfectly. I’m anticipating this will be my go-to sandal all season long.”

Jodi says: “What better way to welcome spring than with a fresh new scent? I discovered this wonderful perfume when I was searching for something new to wear on my wedding day. It’s so fresh and light, it reminds me of spring. And my first bottle lasted two years!”
Handbag by Foley + Corina
Jodi says: “This bag has been on my mind for quite some time. I first saw it years ago while I was living in San Francisco and made a mental note to buy it someday. PASSING ON hope True you
Stops along the way Learn to trust all of life’s twists, turns and yes, even stops. There you will find your truest self. was running down Grider Hill at Lake Cumberland when this 5-foot-by-5-foot wooden sign jumped out at me. It was painted white with red letters and an octagon stop sign shape and said “Slow Down…Stop Ahead.” There were two more signs just like it before the actual stop sign, giving ample warning. A thought blazed through my mind: It sure would be nice to have fair warning when life brings stops along the way. And instantly I knew. I want to believe warnings like this would make the blows easier, but that’s just B.S. I feed myself. Nothing makes those stops less jarring or jolting as the whole of our life is dismantled, requiring us to patiently wait to ground in the new. Stops along the way are necessary. This doesn’t make them easy, and it most certainly isn’t some fair system of justice served. But it is a part of life that each of us gets to experience. No one goes through life unscathed. There is no avoiding life, try as we might to concoct a plan to manage the unmanageable and control the uncontrollable. I actually can laugh at myself now when, in spite of all the wisdom I possess, I still try to willfully power through what I am powerless over. This is absolutely human and, since none of us walks on water, we can accept that we want what we want when we want it and will do things even when we know better to make
64 kitindy.com May+ June 2014
what we want happen. (I hope you are laughing out loud, because I am and it feels good to be entertained by my humanness and delight in the absurdity.) Life is a constant process of letting go and allowing the new. The stops gift us in pauses where we can reflect, asking our selves “What now?! What do I want for my life? Who am I now? What am I feeling? What is this showing me?” There is a grace so fierce and so lovely in the stops along the way, it must be the heavens blowing through us to reveal more. This never ceases, as we are limitless creatures of soul who aren’t wired to stay the same. The soul knocks and invites us to climb the next rung on the ladder. Often, hearing this knock is a result of the stillness found in the stops along the way. The invitation this day and throughout your life is to use the stops that come. Acknowledge the pain and recognize that you never would have wished for the events that rock your world and welcome the wisdom; spin the gold from the heavy lead. Scream out to the heavens, curse them—I assure you they can handle and contain all the anger and rage—and then ask them to show you the gifts of this stop. Trust that although the gifts are expensive, costing us everything in the life we knew—the one that made sense—there are treasures waiting to be revealed. That treasure is you! m
