PUBLISHER’S NOTE

WHY WE CARE In this issue of Kit, we have the distinct privilege of telling the stories of CICOA’s three highly deserving Caregiver of the Year award finalists. I had the pleasure of meeting these finalists, and it truly amazes me to see just how good some people really are. For most of us, life can be full of stress, worry and complaints. But believe me, we have nothing on these caregivers. They have had to give up jobs, take care of their families and pay mounting bills while also spending a great deal of time caring for their loved ones. What makes their stories so special isn’t what they do every day, but how they do it so selflessly and just how much they give of themselves. Gayle Towles, this year’s winner, has been a caregiver not once, but twice in his lifetime. He lost his first wife to cancer, and his second wife to Alzheimer’s Disease. I wish everyone had the chance to meet this amazing retired coach and teacher. I am utterly convinced that just reading Mr. Towles’ story will inspire you to be a better person. I also had the honor of meeting Janelle Elmore and Rene Gatlin, CICOA’s other caregiving award finalists. They are extraordinary women who give so generously of their time and talents without ever realizing how truly special they are. Mr. Towles’ daughter, Kelli, perhaps summed it up best in the recommendation letter she sent to nominate her dad: “Gayle shows others what it truly means to love.” For these caregivers, this isn’t something they do for recognition or reward. It’s just who they are.

SPRING BREAKS THAT WON’T BREAK THE BANK

t

GET AWAY FROM IT ALL, RIGHT HERE IN INDIANA

TRAVEL

With so many options for recreation and relaxation within a few hours of Indianapolis, there’s no need to travel very far to pull off a fun, memorable spring break the whole family is sure to enjoy.

Hamilton County

Looking for some spring break action close to home? Hamilton County brims with family-friendly fun and good times. Conner Prairie Interactive History Park offers entertaining (and educational — shhh!) programming year round, including a special Easter on the Prairie event March 26. Or let youngsters delve into their creative sides at Nickel Plate Arts Adventures in Art camp, March 28-April 1. Keep the kids active and stave off any “I’m bored!” protestations with bouncing at Sky Zone Trampoline Park, go-karting at K1 Speed Indianapolis or bowling at Pinheads. Get out and explore the treehouse perches stationed along the two-mile trail at Flat Fork Creek Park. Girls — and boys — can fulfill their dreams of emulating Katniss Everdeen at the Strawtown Koteewi Sport and Archery Range.

KIT

Fort Wayne

If you can’t make it to Fort Myers, set a course to Fort Wayne! Designed specifically with younger guests in mind, the Fort Wayne Children’s Zoo opens for the season on April 23 with new baby penguin, orangutan and giraffe additions among its permanent residents. (Watch for a new Australian Adventure area to launch this summer.) The Fort Wayne TinCaps minor league baseball team kicks off its 2016 schedule April 9, and the Foellinger-Freimann Botanical Conservatory’s magical live butterfly exhibit takes wing April 16. Also downtown, the historic Embassy Theatre hosts “Peppa Pig Live” on March 24 and “Annie: The Musical” on April 8. Fort Wayne’s isn’t for kids only. Fans of Vera Bradley purses and patterns will want to mark their calendars to attend the company’s annual sale extravaganza event, taking place this year April 13-17. 2

3

If it’s nice outside, head to the ever-popular Monon Trail and one of Carmel’s Zagster bike rental stations, and then pit stop at Bub’s Burgers and Ice Cream or Soho Cafe & Gallery. If the weather’s not cooperating, stop in the Monon Center, where indoor pools, an exercise center, gymnasium and other activities await. Or spend the day just exploring the many delights of Carmel’s Arts & Design District populated with art galleries, fun shops and lots of dining choices. 3

Richmond

Fossils, fairies, trunks and treats — there’s plenty to discover in Richmond. The Whitewater Valley Fossil Hunt provides a program to educate visitors about Wayne County’s archeological past. Grab a free passport at the Old National Road Visitors Center, and then collect five fossils for a stamp and a commemorative embroidered patch. While you’re there, pick up a passport for the Chocolate Trail and sample your way through the area’s candy shops, bakeries and other sweet stops.

2

Along the way, keep an eye out for fairies … more than 40 locations throughout Wayne County participate in the Enchanted Fairy Trail, adorning their establishments with whimsical fairy doors, houses and gardens. Pop in to say hello to Randolph Mastodon, live reptiles and the Egyptian mummy on display at the Joseph Moore Museum of Natural History on the Earlham College campus. A second mummy resides at the Wayne County Historical Museum, in addition to a series of new Adventure Trunks that take little ones on a journey through their own imaginations.

3 4

Corydon

You don’t have to dig very deep to uncover new adventures in Corydon. This historic southern Indiana town is home to Indiana’s Underground packed with caves just begging to be explored. Indiana Caverns hosts “Deep Darkness,” an active four-hour experience that involves kayaking and crawling. Meanwhile, Marengo Cave’s easy walking tours are more appropriate for less intrepid firsttimers. Squire Boone Caverns were discovered by Daniel Boone and his brother Squire in 1790. Don’t forget to pay your respects at Squire’s on-site grave and hit the zipline, if you dare! Corydon was also Indiana’s first state capitol, lending it a proud sense of history and a collection of notable sites to visit. Round out the day by teeing off at the Golf Shores Fun Center, taking a hike through O’Bannon Woods State Park, enjoying a sweet treat at Emery’s Ice Cream and snapping a selfie in front of Butt Drugs.

Madison

On the banks of the mighty Ohio River, the charming town of Madison lures visitors with history and recreation. Clifty Falls State Park proposes a great overnight destination packed with options to make the most of the great outdoors (there’s also an indoor pool). You can call ahead to make arrangements for a horseback trail ride at Shilo Farms, or if you prefer to travel by two wheels, pack your bikes (or rent some at Fizz’s Bike Shop) for a leisurely cruise along the river and through the picturesque Hanover College campus. Watch out for the “Bubble Man.” Kids love watching this local legend create giant bubbles on the riverfront. The Madison County Historical Society’s History Center holds an 1800s school room and general store, and the Ohio Theatre screens kid-friendly flicks in an old-timey atmosphere. When you’ve built up an appetite, hit Hinkle’s Sandwich Shop for what is arguably one of the best hamburgers in the state. Just make sure to save a little room for a tasty treat from Red Peppermint or Cocoa Safari afterward.

HEROIN HITTING HOME

ADDICTION IN INDIANA AFFECTS EVERYONE. UNDERSTANDING THE IMPACT IS A FIRST STEP. By Amy Lynch

30 kitindy.com

21%

IN MARION COUNTY, THE INDIANAPOLIS METROPOLITAN POLICE DEPARTMENT REPORTED A 21 PERCENT INCREASE IN HEROIN USE BETWEEN 2010 AND 2011.

Our growing heroin epidemic

The devastating problem of heroin addiction is hitting home, and hitting hard, in Central Indiana, and the families it’s affecting might surprise you. Young athletes, scholars and homecoming queens from solid, upstanding schools and communities — no one is immune to the insidious lure of this rapidly growing epidemic. “Heroin was once thought to be restricted primarily to urban areas, and minorities over age 45 were most at risk,” says Steve Creel, a therapist/addictions specialist at Living With Intention. “The most at-risk population for heroin-related death is now whites between 18 and 45. It’s become more prevalent in suburban areas as well.” In Marion County, the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department reported a 21 percent increase in heroin use between 2010 and 2011, also noting that Mexican drug cartels consider Indianapolis a prime hub because of its intersecting interstates and thoroughfares. Marijuana currently ranks as the most commonly used illicit substance in Indiana, which may serve as a gateway into harder drugs like heroin. “For young people seeking treatment at Fairbanks, the typical teen heroin user has experimented with several different types of drugs,” says Molly Burns, director of marketing and business development for Fairbanks Addiction Treatment Center. “There are many different ways they are exposed to heroin — friends, family members, parties and school.” Heroin’s cheap price tag (sometimes as low as $3 to $10 a bag) and easy access make it even harder for some users to refuse. Even scarier, all it takes is one time to get hooked, leading to near-immediate addiction.

“In the beginning, an addict’s use is typically a small part of his life and progresses to the point that the substance use negatively impacts nearly every part of his life,” Creel explains. “It interferes with social responsibilities and interpersonal relationships. Cravings and thoughts of use tend to become intense and invasive; those who are addicted to heroin or other opiates are literally overtaken by their thoughts about how to obtain the substance.” Drug addiction can start at any age, and statistics show it’s now happening earlier than ever. “The average age of first use of marijuana has been reported to be 16; some studies say it’s as young as 14,” Creel says. “When a person comes to treatment, it’s important to obtain information about age at first use — those who begin using at earlier ages are much more likely to struggle with dependency, anxiety, depression and other mental illnesses.” Addiction can be difficult to define. Burns points out that individuals don’t have to use drugs or drink alcohol every day to have a problem. And the presence of some symptoms like physical decline and behavioral changes could relate to other conditions, which may or may not be related to substance abuse. Heroin is a different story, though. Users often exhibit telltale signs such as loss of function, extreme sluggishness, constricted eye pupils, nausea, vomiting and all-over itching. Other giveaways might include the discovery of a powdery or dark sticky substance stored in a balloon or foil packet, along with the presence of drug paraphernalia like razor blades, syringes, spoons, lighters and rubber tubing. Symptoms of withdrawal can mimic the flu and range from abdominal cramping and runny nose to insomnia and anxiety.

31

“ADDICTION DISCONNECTS PARENTS FROM THEIR FUNDAMENTAL RESPONSIBILITY OF PARENTING THEIR CHILDREN” “When addiction is present, use of the substance continues despite negative physical or emotional consequences,” Creel says. “There’s a loss of control. People begin to break their own rules regarding parameters they put in place to help control their use, and may become annoyed with others who express concern.” Guilt or remorse about drug use and behaviors while under the influence may be other indications of a problem. If you suspect your child might be using drugs, acting fast can quite literally save his or her life. “Don’t ignore the problem; seek professional help immediately,” Burns urges. “A range of treatments including behavioral therapies, medications, lifestyle changes and a supportive environment are effective at helping people stop using heroin and return to stable and productive lives.”

The littlest victims

Sadly, Indiana children can easily become indirect victims of their parent’s drug use and abuse. “In 2015, Indiana experienced a 25 percent increase in Child in Need of Services filings, the abuse and neglect case that follows a child’s removal from parents,” says Cindy Booth, Child Advocates of Marion County executive director. “We experienced a 30 percent increase in cases in the Indianapolis area.” Child Advocates provides independent, child-focused representation to children who have suffered abuse or neglect, and is the only agency to contract for this service with the Marion County Juvenile Court. Last year, the organization served more than 7,000 central Indiana children in need. Booth says about one-third of the Marion County CHINS cases filed in 2015 included substance abuse allegations against parents at the beginning of the case. Of those, 885 involved heroin. “Addiction disconnects parents from their fundamental responsibility of parenting their children,” she explains. “The need for the drug becomes paramount, and children

32 kitindy.com

are neglected and/or abused as parents seek and use the drug. We’ve had more than one case in which children have found their parents cold and unresponsive and had to call 911.” When children are removed from their homes by the Indiana Department of Child Services and brought into a CHINS case, Child Advocates acts in their best interests. “It’s then that we can advocate for services for the children while their parents undergo treatment, we hope,” Booth says. “As we advocate for the children, we monitor their progress, watching out for wellbeing factors. We want each child to be in a safe and permanent home as soon as possible.”

Sloane Swayze makes metal-and-gemstone jewelry you’ll want to keep on all day and night. “I focus on making simple, everyday pieces with a little twist to them,” says the Indianapolis jewelry designer. With basic shapes and clean lines, Swayze’s affordable, easy-wearing necklaces, bracelets, earrings and rings retail at boutiques across the country, including Homespun: Modern Handmade and Eva Maison in Indianapolis, and online at sloanejewelrydesign.com. Swayze’s passion for making jewelry started in middle school, when she was into polymer-clay beads. By high school, she was selling her handmade jewelry to friends. Even Swayze’s art teacher bought a necklace from her. She went on to Ball State University to major in art with a concentration in metalsmithing. Funny thing is, Swayze had never picked up a torch before enrolling.

But she quickly got comfortable melting and fusing metals at super-high temps, and now the 24-year-old Indianapolis native designs metal jewelry full time. She uses argentium sterling silver, which she says is a step up from traditional sterling silver. “It’s stays newer looking,” Swayze says, “and it doesn’t tarnish.” In her studio on the northeast side of Indianapolis, Swayze solders, stamps and drills metal to bring her designs to life, incorporating semi-precious gemstones to add a bit of color here and there. If you find yourself loving a bunch of her pieces, well, that’s the point. They’re meant to be mixed and matched. “I’m just not one to wear one piece of jewelry,” she says. “I like to layer them up.”

A TOUCH OF SPR IN G By Susan Beckwith | Photos by Chris Whonsetler

While you can’t count on the weather during an Indiana spring, you can trust Susan Beckwith to help you navigate the shifting winds of style change. Start by thinking about layers — definitely key as you stroll into warmer weather. Borrow Susan’s unstoppable confidence, style savvy and eye for a deal to take you from work to weekend during some of Indiana’s chillier months.

WEEKNIGHTS OUT SUSAN SAYS: For dinner out with friends, this is one of my go-to looks. My Joe’s jeans are beyond comfortable, and the darker wash works well with my other navy pieces. I love items in my wardrobe that tell a story or transport me back to a memory. I found this flowy chiffon vest on a bus trip with the Noblesville Parks Department at the Shipshewana Flea Market. Who would have ever guessed? The paisley print in lilac and yellow rev things up for spring. To make this more of a weeknight look versus weekend, I opt again for my neutral Calvin Klein nude stiletto pumps and a clutch in a sunny yellow.

36 kitindy.com

LAYERS FOR DAYTIME SUSAN SAYS: Spring is the perfect time of year to channel your softer side in florals, lace and strappy heels. However, with my fair skin and light hair, pastels aren’t my best look. Instead, I work in the softer hues of spring in my accessories and typically stick to bolder colors in my clothing. Navy is a color that looks great on almost everyone and especially blondes. Sleeveless long blazers like this one from White House Black Market are a great staple piece. Wear them year round by switching the base layer: a thin sweater in winter, a blouse in spring and a fitted tank during the summer months. Until we hit those warmer temperatures, for work I’ll pair this blazer with my favorite classic white button-down blouse from Loft. To brighten things up for spring, I chose my maize slim ankle pants from White House Black Market. To elongate my legs, I opted for my neutral Calvin Klein stiletto pointed pumps.

CASUAL DATE NIGHTS SUSAN SAYS: I like to experiment with different looks. However, if I had to wrap up my current style in one outfit, this would be it. I recently purchased this tulle skirt from Delaney’s and I’m totally in love. Honestly, I have endless plans for this new addition to my closet. I’m excited to transition it into summer months by pairing with fun graphic tees and tanks. For this WWSW story, I’m wearing it with a light blue Billabong plaid shirt and some ankle booties from Altar’d State. This would be my idea of a good date night outfit. Most of our dates are casual affairs, but the skirt makes it a little more special and a change from my every day.

Find more of Susan’s style at belleofthemidwest.com. 37

WORKOUTS ON THE CHEAP SUSAN SAYS: Running and high-energy activities are my exercise of choice, but recently I’ve been practicing yoga at Riverview Rehab & Fitness and I love it! I can already tell a difference in my flexibility. It’s been a great complement to my cardio regimen. Regarding my active wear, patterned leggings are my jam. I have no problem saving up for investment wardrobe pieces. However, due to potential make-up and sweat stains, workout wear is not something I like to spend a lot on. With that said, I do feel more inspired to exercise when I have coordinating workout gear. To find looks that motivate but don’t break the bank, go to T.J. Maxx. They have all kinds of excellent workout apparel like this Under Armour turquoise tank and these Marika leggings. Namaste!

WEEKENDS ON THE GO SUSAN SAYS: Once spring hits, I start pulling out my lighter-wash denim like these jeans from Citizens of Humanity. I think heels or wedges look best with this flared style. For a fresh spring look, I like to wear them with my Delaney’s floral short-sleeved top and coral Steve Madden bag. Since the weather can still be unpredictable, having a light coat like my leather BCBG moto jacket or trench is a good idea.

BRIDAL SHOWER GIFTS C

Spring is also a popular time of year for bridal showers. Here are some of my favorite gift ideas for those brides-to-be. A | PERSONALIZED CUTTING BOARD: To this day, some of my favorite wedding presents are pieces I still use to entertain guests. For the new couple, this personalized cutting board will be a sweet start to creating a sophisticated buffet. B | AMY CORNWELL: An Amy Cornwell jewelry creation is an excellent choice for brides. Amy has been featured in Midwest Living magazine and her clients include former Bachelor contestant Tenley Molzahn. Shown here is her “Reese” necklace in gold with the couple’s initials, “h & a.” The best part: Amy is a born-and-bred Hoosier. Check out amycornwell.com to see a closeup of “Reese” and more amazing pieces.

C | RECIPE BOX: A recipe box might seem like an old-fashioned, practical choice, but I think it’s a timeless alternative to Googling recipes. Add a personal touch by including one of your own recipes in the box. For all you loyal WWSW readers who might be curious, the recipe I passed on with this gift was my “Grandmother Guilkey’s 7-Layer” dinner. (Get the recipe at belleofthemidwest.com.) D | BEAUTY PRODUCTS: Brides want to look their best on their wedding day, so passing along some of your absolute favorite beauty products is a great idea. These skyn Hydro Cool Firming Eye Gels de-puff tired eyes to help create a flawless face that’ll be photo ready. Heaven forbid she has a blemish right before the big day, but these new Peter Thomas Roth acne-clear dots will help her save face just in case.

SMOOTH YOUR CELLULITE Dr. Turkle discusses Cellfina™, the only FDA-cleared minimally invasive procedure to improve the appearance of cellulite.

E

veryone hates cellulite. No matter how trim you are or how good of shape you’re in, you probably have some cellulite on your buttocks or thighs. Now there is Cellfina to smooth the appearance of cellulite for at least two years. Cellfina is a onetime, outpatient procedure offered only through qualified physician offices. In the clinical study, patients reported high rates of satisfaction with their treatment results. Two years post-treatment, 96 percent of patients were satisfied, surpassing the satisfaction rates of other cellulite treatments. The Cellfina system treats the structural cause of cellulite – the connective bands woven throughout the fat in the buttocks and thighs. These tight bands pull down on the skin, creating the puckering or dimpling effect you see on the surface of the skin. Cellfina releases the tension on these bands so the skin can bounce back and smooth itself out. Most patients see results within three days of treatment and results continue to improve over time. In the study, the results lasted at least two years. This is the longest duration for any FDA-cleared cellulite treatment. Because Cellfina is minimally invasive, there is no general anesthesia. The treatment is performed in our office. Using a local anesthetic, a small needle-sized device is inserted under the skin to release the fibrous bands. The treatment takes about 45 minutes. There may be minimal soreness, tenderness, swelling and bruising for a couple of weeks following treatment. Most patients resume normal activities the next day. Ideal candidates for Cellfina should be at or near a healthy body weight. If you have cellulite and would like to see if Cellfina is right for you, call today to schedule a consultation.

Gayle Towles

Nomination letter by daughter Kelli Towles

“My dad, Gayle Towles, has said on numerous occasions that he was always meant to be a caregiver. Until her death from colon cancer almost 20 years ago, he was with my mom daily, never leaving her side and even retiring from a coaching/teaching job he loved to care for her full time. “A few years after my mom’s death, my dad met and married his current wife, Kitty, who in January succumbed to Alzheimer’s. He had been a full-time caregiver for her for the past eight years, and at age 81, said that as long as he was able to care for her, he would continue to do so. Kitty was completely dependent on him for several years, unable to walk, see, speak or go to the bathroom on her own. My dad fed her, changed her diapers, drained her throat, provided her oxygen and nebulizer, kept her meds organized and performed numerous other duties to keep her comfortable, happy and as healthy as possible. He dressed her quite fashionably, put makeup on her, got her hair done and took her anywhere he could, from the grocery and church, even Pacers games. Toward the end, she was unable to communicate on any level, but he was as proud as a peacock to have had her by his side. Even on the days he received relief, he said he missed not being with her. “My dad is an inspiration to everyone he comes in contact with. Many times when he was out in a restaurant with Kitty, feeding her every bite, strangers would come up to him and comment on his love and patience. Some even paid for their dinner without saying a word.

“The example my dad has provided for his great-granddaughters cannot be underestimated, showing them what it is to care for someone without expecting anything in return. When he said his vows for better or worse, he truly meant every word. As with all caregivers, there are struggles, but he never complains. The hospice nurses who assisted him were amazed at how kind, gentle and patient he is, and have indicated that my dad’s love and care are what kept Kitty going for so long. “My dad is the epitome of caregiving, and was certainly placed on earth to show others what it truly means to love.”

“IT’S AMAZING HOW FAR A PERSON’S STRENGTH CAN BE STRETCHED.“

Janelle Elmore Nomination letter by Amanda Avant, IU Health professional

“Janelle and her husband, Patrick, dated for more than six years and have been married for three. On Feb. 10, 2014, at age 34, Patrick was unexpectedly admitted to the hospital for congestive heart failure due to a familial cardiomyopathy. “Originally, Patrick received a BiVAD Centrimag device intended for shortterm recovery and a bridge to a heart transplant, spending four months in the ICU. In June 2014, a complication led Patrick to a Left Ventricular Assist Device pump, which was disheartening news to the family. “During this time, Janelle juggled caregiving responsibilities with mothering her 13-month-old child and figuring out how to provide for her family. She had to receive training on the ventricular assist device before Patrick could be released to go home and wait for his transplant. He wasn’t able to work and money was tight. 42 kitindy.com

“With all this information thrown at her so quickly, Janelle didn’t bat an eye. She was available at all times and communicated well with Patrick’s health care team. Many young VAD patients struggle with the device, as it requires a huge lifestyle change for both the patient and the caregiver. If it weren’t for Janelle, Patrick may not have stayed on track. Within the year, Janelle became pregnant again. As if this family hadn’t already faced enough stress, their little girl was born prematurely in 2015. Even as a new mom with a baby in the NICU, Janelle managed to take care of Patrick. It’s amazing how far a person’s strength can be stretched — Janelle is a prime example and came out shining in the end.

“The baby girl regained her health and came home, but in November 2015, Patrick fought an infection in his LVAD — a dangerous issue that can be lifethreatening. Again, Janelle rose to the challenge, keeping Patrick on track with medications and medical management. Patrick has had ups and downs, but is currently awaiting his new heart. The journey isn’t over, and Patrick will continue to see our cardiac team for the rest of his life, but Janelle puts us at ease knowing he’s in good hands. Without Janelle, Patrick would not be here today. She stands out as one of our best caregivers of the 65 patients and their loved ones we treat here in our clinic.”

“QUALITY OF LIFE WAS RENE’S MANTRA, AND SHE PURPORTED TO PROVIDE IT FOR HOWEVER LONG HER MOTHER HAD LEFT.“ Rene Gatlin

Nominated by Sharen M. Waters, friend and hospice social worker

“I’m not nominating Rene Gatlin because she does more than others, although it’s likely she does. And I’m not nominating her because she provides care with uncanny patience and considerable grace, although she does. I’m nominating her because of her heart, her story and who she is. “Several years ago, Rene volunteered to move her mother, Irene, from Arkansas to Indianapolis to single-handedly care for her in her home. Rene’s mother didn’t raise her; her grandmother did. Irene was unable to because of cognitive limitations, and now needs total care assistance. “Rene wakes throughout the night to feed her mother, in addition to serving her breakfast around 10 a.m., when she takes a break from her work-from-home job designing and managing computer software programs for a large hospital in Arizona. Because Irene can’t eat from a spoon, she is on a pureed diet. Rene orders freshly prepared, pureed meals for her in a variety of cuisines. To preserve her mother’s quality of life, and also to eliminate risk of aspiration, Rene must dispense the meals drips at a time, alternating with sips of drink. As you can imagine, this takes a very long time. After breakfast, Irene gets her daily wash, during which Rene changes her (sometimes manually eliminating waste), transfers her and changes sheets before returning to work. “Lunch and dinner are just as timeconsuming, but I’ve never witnessed Rene complain or appear stressed. She’s consistently calm and offers care with grace. She takes time to talk with Irene and actively listen, though her mother’s speech is often garbled beyond comprehension. It’s uncommon

for bed-bound individuals to avoid skin breakdowns, but because of Rene’s attentiveness, her mother was able to for a long time. “Rene would often transfer her mother to her wheelchair just so she could feel sunshine on her skin. Quality of life was Rene’s mantra, and she said she would provide it for however long her mother had left.

“Because of the care Irene was afforded, she no longer needed hospice support. Ms. Gatlin has left quite an impact on me. Not only was she attentive to her mother, but she was always available to her mother’s health care providers, asking questions and always seeking to learn more. She is a true partner in her mother’s health care.” Rene Gatlin continues to care for Irene in her home in Indianapolis.

JAR STARS: CANDLE DIY REDUX

C CRAFT

KIT

By Mackenzie McGilvrey | Photos by Chris Whonsetler

Lured by the scent and completely sold by the pretty container, we’re all guilty of buying candles with the intention of finding a use for them after their burn life. They’re just too pretty to throw away. So we store them away and never find a use for them — until now! Retrieve those jars and bottles and reuse them in the bathroom to store cotton balls, tips, bobby pins, makeup utensils, hair accessories and more. But don’t stop there. We’ve listed some other great ways to reuse those stylish jars.

Cleaning Tips:

»» Digging wax out of containers is a struggle. Spare yourself the pain. Fill the jar or bottle with hot boiling water to help break up the wax and planted wick. »» After you’re wax-free, handwash the container with dish soap and a sponge you don’t use on your everyday dishes. »» If there are still dark, smoky spots on the inside of your container, apply nail polish remover to a cotton ball and spot treat.

More Ways to Use Them: Don’t limit yourself to just the bathroom. Here are some other ways to reclaim and salvage your beautiful candle containers. 1

»» Prettify your office. On your desk, place repurposed containers to hold pens, pencils, paper clips, rulers and more.

2

Voted “Best Dressed,” here are some of our favorite candle jars to start your repurposing projects.

»» Plant a plant! Succulents and terrariums grow best in shallow pots or containers. Just make sure to add soil or moss to the bottom for drainage. »» Get decorative. Use a collection of small jars as votive holders. Larger ones serve as rustic flower vases. »» There’s always something else in your house that needs a nice home. Think toothbrush and toothpaste, hair clips, eyeglasses, loose change, car keys. (Now you need to do more candle shopping. You’re welcome.)

EXPERT ADVICE Q+A

healthy sleep, Healthy Body, Healthy Life. DID YOU KNOW THAT A LACK OF SLEEP CAN MAKE YOU GAIN 2 POUNDS IN LESS THAN A WEEK? THAT’S RIGHT, INSOMNIA INCREASES YOUR RISK OF OBESITY. And that’s not all. Insomnia also increases your risk of food cravings, insulin resistance, diabetes, memory loss, cognitive decline, disorientation, confusion, anxiety, depression, mood swings, heart disease and even cancer. Perhaps worst of all, it just makes you feel lousy. Fatigued. Unmotivated. Draggy.

So, if you want to be healthy and have a healthy body, what do you need to do? Sleep, that’s what. Sleeping well is one of the most important things you can do to optimize your health. But it’s not that easy, right? For too many women today, sleep is a real problem. In fact, 1 in every 3 American women struggle with sleep, at least for brief periods, on a regular basis. Worse yet, 10% of all women suffer from chronic insomnia. For them, the idea of feeling rested and ready to go in the morning is something they can only dream of (if only they could sleep and dream in the first place, that is). But not all women are the same. Insomnia is not a one-size-fits-all kind of problem. Some women aren’t able to fall asleep. Others fall asleep just fine, but then awaken early but can’t fall back to sleep. Still others awaken repeatedly throughout the night. The last and possibly the largest group of all simply awaken day after day feeling unrested and unrefreshed.

Insomnia answers So, if any of this fits you, then you have insomnia. It’s official. We know the diagnosis. The question, however, isn’t so much WHAT you have. It’s WHY? Why aren’t you sleeping well? What’s the true root cause of the problem? And that’s precisely where Functional Medicine can help. Functional Medicine is designed precisely to ask the WHY questions. WHY aren’t you sleeping well? Well, there can be lots of reasons. From a simple nutrient deficiency. To obstructive sleep apnea. To a medication or supplement side effect. To hormone problems (think thyroid, cortisol, progesterone, estrogen, etc.). To diet. To stress. To pain. To anxiety and depression. The list goes on and on. You get the idea. So what’s the answer? Well, far too often and for far too many, the answer comes in the form of a prescription medication. As if insomnia is somehow the result of an Ambien deficiency or Xanax deficiency. (That makes about as much sense as saying that depression is caused by a Prozac deficiency or that high cholesterol is caused by a Crestor deficiency.)

Stephen P. Elliott, M.D. Living with Intention, INC 11979 Fishers Crossing Drive Fishers, IN 46038 317-863-5888 LivingWithIntention.biz

The true answer, the definitive answer, can only be found by understanding the cause. And that can take some time. More time than is typically available in a 10-15 minute doctor’s appointment these days. It typically requires some digging, some investigating. But once you’ve done that digging, once you’ve uncovered the cause, then you know how to solve it. And most of the time, the vast majority of the time, the problem can be solved naturally. No prescription necessary. Make sense? Of course it does. And that, perhaps, is one of the best definitions of Functional Medicine I’ve ever heard. Simply stated, it’s medicine that makes sense.

sleep numbers

• According to the CDC, some 40-50 million Americans are sleep deprived. • More than 9 Million Americans spend billions of dollars annually on prescription sleep meds. • All told, the “sleep industry” generates over $370 Billion dollars of revenue annually.

THE BOLDNESS OF NEUTRALS

Envision a room that invigorates you in the morning and calms you in the evening, a room that allows space for your mood to move freely and adds positivity to your outlook on life. This the environment that every neutral-designed room should aspire to be — never boring. “While I do love seeing color splashed throughout a home, there is something about a neutrally based palette that I find equally as bold,” says Cassie Perry of Me&3 Designs and hausofhuntress.com. “With neutrals, you rely on simple, clean lines and minimal color variation to create a strong statement.”

ECHOS OF WOOD With advancements in the manufacturing process, flooring artisans have been able to mimic the wood look, which is both timeless and neutral, no matter what color you choose to complement your space. Floors To Your Home offers many options of the wood look that can be customized for your space.

Cassie Perry OWNER AND LEAD DESIGNER AT ME&3 DESIGNS AND DESIGN BLOGGER FOR HAUSOFHUNTRESS.COM

The color palette and furniture for a room would be nothing without the perfect flooring to pull it all together. Cassie Perry knows flooring is essential to helping you achieve the look and feel of every room in your home. Here, Perry chooses her favorite neutral flooring options to become the perfect setting for your furniture.

NATURAL STONE STYLE

PATTERN OF BEHAVIOR

Get the hand-scraped look of marble and other natural materials from tile, laminate or vinyl. These hot trends from Floors To Your Home are easy to install and maintain — and they’re budget-friendly.

Change the way you think about pattern underfoot. Ask your flooring professional to show you how to create geometric patterns such as chevron or herringbone to give you a subtle pop of interest. Brick and wood work beautifully.

Nick Williams

JOHN KIRK FURNITURE, NOBLESVILLE

Nick Williams knows how to make a neutral room come alive. Choose window treatments in a neutral-colored, linenblend fabric, made into panels that traverse, hung as high as possible to make ceilings soar. An unique chandelier can serve as the room's "statement accessory."

A style in reclaimed wood or metal fills the bill, or choose crystal to dress up the room. “Think daytime diamonds!” Williams says. Here, Williams shares his favorite furniture pieces to arrange in a neutralcentric room.

LUXE OTTOMAN Donate that puffy recliner and opt for a modern chair and ottoman, Williams advises. You can still put your feet up, but you’ll look stylish doing it. The 42.5inch customizable Lorenzo Ottoman from John Kirk Furniture is available in fabric or leather. The shelf on the bottom offers storage space, and casters give a nod to the industrial look. It also doubles as extra seating when your home is overflowing with guests.

TABLE WITH TEXTURE

REFLECTING POOL

The Shelton two-tiered side table is built for utility with its glass top and a center storage drawer. Beautiful clean lines, a gray finish and sophisticated brushednickel hardware give it the texture a great neutral room achieves so well.

“I believe every room needs a mirror, but that's probably vanity speaking,” Williams says. A mirror with an interesting frame can be a great statement piece amid a neutral palette. The 44-inch Carmen Spoked Mirror from John Kirk Furniture is available in several finishes and is flexible to enough to hang in different spaces.

Brian McIntosh

HOUSEWORKS, INDIANAPOLIS

A neutral room does not have to equate to a boring interior design, especially when you use ideas from Brian McIntosh. “Using different textures, tone-on-tone patterns and even modern shag rugs will help give the room interest without being boring,” McIntosh says. He suggests varying textures of leather, nubby fabrics, metals and some elements from nature, such as hair-onhide leathers and woods left in a raw state. Here, McIntosh presents his best recommendations for neutral furniture and accessories and tells us why he loves them.

NEUTRAL PARTY PLAYING HIDE & CHIC Made from cowhide with a leather backing, the Brilliant Rug is a great example of an animal hide that works in a neutral color scheme. This versatile piece from Houseworks would be serene in a bedroom, durable in an entryway or add interest and texture in a living room.

The Aaron chair found at Houseworks is reminiscent of classic midcentury wood-arm lounge chairs from the ’50s and ’60s, but brought up to date. It's beautiful in pairs or add one extra seat in a tight corner. Striking from every angle, the Aaron can stand alone if you need to have a chair floating in the middle of the room.

CRÈME DE LA CRÈME “The Monti is one sofa that debunks the myth that modern can't be comfortable,” McIntosh says. This sofa's design works with everything from ultra-modern to transitional decorating schemes. With impeccable tailoring, an uncomplicated design and airy — nearly floating — stance, it is one beautiful sofa.

CONTAINER GARDENS

Text by Brooke Reynolds | Photos by Chris Whonsetler

Give way to warmer weather! Welcome spring with container gardens full of blooming bulbs, hearty succulents and colorful annuals. These sweet doit-yourself options come from the green thumbs at Allisonville Nursery. Sure, it’s easy to purchase the already-blooming pots, but why not try your hand at creating these pretty little things?

EARLY-SPRING CONTAINER GARDENS

1

WHAT YOU’LL NEED. Be inventive with your container A watering can, old sink or pail would work, as long as it has drainage holes in the bottom. Place a mesh sheet in the bottom of the container to keep soil from escaping. Select good-quality potting mix that indicates it’s for indoor and outdoor containers, and get starter fertilizer, such as BioTone. Now for the fun part: Pick out a variety of cool-weather plants using the rule of thumb, “thriller, filler and spiller.” Thriller plants give height — think pussy willow and daffodils. Filler comes from the pops of color in spring bulbs, pansies and primroses, and spiller plants hang over the edge of the container, like ivy.

2

CONSIDER THE COHESION. Fill the container 3/4 full with a blend of the potting mix and starter fertilizer, portioned according to the package directions. Pull each plant out of the container, tickle the roots apart, and play with the plant placement, considering the balance of filler, thriller and spiller throughout.

3

MOSS IS BOSS. Once you have your plants where you want them, press them firmly into the potting mix. Use a trough to add more potting mix around the plants, but don’t fill the container quite to the top. Place natural moss around the plants to cover the soil. Moss helps keep moisture in, and it looks more finished, as mulch does in your yard. “You could also use pebbles, but moss definitely makes us think early spring,” says Allisonville Nursery’s Sharron Hadden.

4

TRINKET TOUCH. Add seasonal trinkets that nod to early spring, such as moss balls, bird nests, curly willow twigs, bark, rocks or forsythia twigs with little blooms on them. Use these as filler if you didn’t buy enough plants or ran out of moss. These extras add another dimension to the final look.

5

YEAR-ROUND HOME.Keep this container garden indoors by a window. Use a foolproof moisture meter to know when to water, or use the finger test to see if the soil is moist. As the flowers fade on the early-spring bulbs, remove them and replace with early-summer annuals, such as snapdragons, stalks or ranunculus. With only a few change-outs, this container garden will last through the year.

OUTDOOR ANNUALS

1

WHAT YOU’LL NEED: You’ll need a plastic drop-in container with holes in the bottom, used for readying the plants indoors. When the frost is over, this container will be all set to drop into your permanent outdoor ceramic bowl or box. Pick up potting mix and starter fertilizer, and gather plenty of longer-lasting, cold-weather-tolerant, flowering plants. Perennials are perfect filler, while yearlong ivy is good spiller. “You might even consider adding parsley in, for an edible bit!” Hadden says. Thriller height is achieved through twigs and other seasonal add-ins.

2 3

CONSIDER THE COHESION. Follow Step 2 from above, except pack the container very tightly — more so than with early-spring bulbs.

MOSS IS NOT BOSS. Skip the moss. Packing the container tightly with plants lessens the need for moss because the filler leaves cover up the soil. At a loss without moss? Use it to cover the lip of the drop-in so the combined containers look more seamless.

INDOOR SUCCULENTS

1

WHAT YOU’LL NEED. Good-quality cactus mix soil (no starter fertilizer this time), a terra cotta bowl (no drainage hole necessary) and a selection of indoor succulents. Choose thick-leafed, shallow-root plants such as aloe, echeveria, jade and cactus. Not only can these annuals withstand desert heat and hold moisture for weeks, but they can also basically survive on neglect, Hadden says. That’s good news for those of us with black thumbs.

2 3

4

TAKE IT OUTSIDE. Once these annuals have been readied indoors with plenty of light, water and warmth, they are ready for life in the great outdoors, post-frost. You may choose to plant them in your yard garden where they will pop up every year. No matter where they reside, be sure to pinch blooms out as they fade so they’ll grow fresh blooms over and over. Use a moisture meter or finger test to know when to water them.

CONSIDER THE COHESION. Follow Step 2 under EarlySpring Container Gardens.

MOSS IS BOSS. Follow Step 3 under Early-Spring Container Gardens, except instead of moss, add gravel to the top. You might opt for colorful fish aquarium gravel or colored glass.

4

INDOOR DELIGHT. Your succulent container garden can stay indoors and should receive direct sunlight from a southwest window. Use a moisture meter to know when it needs to be watered. It’s best to let the soil dry out and then wait one full day before watering again.

RECIPES INSPIRED BY TRULY FARM-FRESH EGGS, THE CHICKENS THAT LAY THEM AND THE PEEPS WHO RAISE THEM. Photos and Recipes by Katherine Costello

It is hard to admit that there’s always been something that made me a little squeamish about the “brown egg thing” as I see it. I knew people who bought fresh brown eggs, but I did not count myself among them, and not because I didn’t care for eggs. How could I not marvel at the transformation of the egg once beaten? At a young age, I was lured by cake recipes that called for eggs to be beaten until they “triple in volume” or “soft peaks form” or the froth becomes a “very pale yellow.” Even to this day I get a bit giddy inside when this little culinary miracle occurs. While shooting “chick pics” on my friend’s farm, I was invited in for a lovely egg scramble with fresh chervil. The eggs were beautiful, with rich-colored yolks due to the fact they’d been laid just the day before. In the end, though, it’s all about the taste. As it turns out, fresh eggs taste better, especially if the person eating them had to drop a phobia to discover them. These are two of my favorite go-to egg dishes. Peeling a soft cooked egg for the Panko Eggs can be a bit tedious, but after a little practice it gets much easier, and well worth it for these little gems.

No. One Reason to Host Brunch ... QUICK & EASY EGGS IN PURGATORY (RECIPE ON PAGE 64)

KALE CITRUS SALAD 4 SERVINGS

DRESSING

1 tablespoon plain greek yogurt* 1 /3 cup citrus syrup (recipe on page 61) 1 /3 cup fresh squeezed citrus of your choice 1 /4 teaspoon minced garlic 1 tablespoon olive oil 1 pinch cayenne pepper Salt and pepper, to taste

SALAD

5 ounces baby kale 1 avocado, peeled and cubed 1 grapefruit, peeled, sectioned and cut into 1/2 -inch pieces 1 orange or 2 satsumas, peeled and QUICK & EASY EGGS sectioned 1 12-ounce can garbanzo beans or white IN PURGATORY bean of SERVES 6 your choice 1 /4 cup roasted pumpkin seeds 3 tablespoons olive oil 1 Using an in immersion blender 2 tablespoons chopped onion (preferred), food processor or blender, 1 teaspoon chopped garlic blend together thepaste ingredients for the 1 teaspoon anchovy dressing. 1 can (14.5 ounces) diced fire roasted 2 tomatoes Toss the salad ingredients with the 1 can (14.5 ounces) diced tomatoes with dressing and serve. green chilies *For a dairy-free “wilted” salad, I’ve made 2 tablespoons tomato paste this by omitting the yogurt and heating the 6 eggs dressing … also very yummy! 6 large slices crusty bread Fresh herbs such as rosemary, thyme, basil, sage, oregano or flat-leaf parsley, to garnish Parmigiano Reggiano or Pecorino Romano, grated or thinly shaved, to garnish

INSTRUCTIONS

1 Sauté the onion in the olive oil on medium heat in a wide pan until translucent. Stir in chopped garlic and continue to sauté for about 2 more minutes. Remove from heat. Pour off 1 tablespoon of the seasoned oil and set it aside. 2 Return the pan to medium heat, stirring in the anchovy paste; drain and add tomatoes and paste, simmering for about 25 minutes. (I prefer my sauce to be rustic/chunky, but you may also blend it in the food processor at this point if you prefer a less chunky sauce.) Make a well in the saucepan for each egg and drop an egg into each well; turn the heat up to medium and cover, poaching the eggs for about 5 minutes for a soft, runny yolk egg.

3 While the eggs are poaching in the tomato sauce, toast your slices of bread on both sides. Brush with the remaining 1 tablespoon olive oil.
