PREPARE TO POUNCE ON ANIMAL PRINT. We adore the standard neutrals – white, black, gray, khaki, cream – but we’re wild about the idea of tossing cheetah, leopard or snakeskin into the same palette. This summer, we invite you to play with print. Swap your simple white jeans for a cheetahinspired skirt from Blue Peppermint, or give your basic white tee the day off, and instead, reach for this leopard print cami from Dottie Couture. If you’re still apprehensive about going all-in with the animal threads, try mixing in an accessory like a head scarf or a fun scrunchie, instead. EXPERT ADVICE Q+A

ABOUT-FACE

We all want to put our best face forward. There are so many options for acheiving that youthful glow, and not all are surgical. Dr. Emily Hrisomalos discusses how they find you the best option, that meets your goals.

Q A

Is it possible to only address certain areas of the face at one time?

Definitely. We always ask patients what their specific concerns are and discuss what surgeries will best optimize these features. Often surgery is guided by whether or not it is the upper or lower face that we aim to improve. We then discuss specific procedures to address these prioritized concerns. All discussions include projections of the expected outcome and recovery time.

Q A

What if I’m not ready for surgery but I still want to look younger?

The great thing is, for more mild aging changes or for those who are just not ready for surgical facial rejuvenation, we have multiple non-surgical options. Botox helps to relax dynamic lines mostly of the upper face that are created with facial movement, while fillers are used to fill areas of volume loss or shadows created by the tissue atrophy and descent that occur with aging and are present when the face is at rest. Laser resurfacing and chemical peels are also great noninvasive options for improving overall skin quality and freshening up your appearance.

Q A

What are the most common surgical facial rejuvenation procedures?

Among the most common surgeries we perform for facial rejuvenation include eyelid surgery (upper and/or lower blepharoplasty), brow lifts, and facelifts.

Q A

Who is an ideal candidate for a facelift?

An ideal candidate for a facelift is someone who desires improvement in their jawline and neck. These areas become heavy turning the youthful heart-like shape of the face into a more

rectangular one. The jawline and neck are the primary areas addressed with some secondary benefit in the mid-face and cheek area. Generally these patients have aging changes beyond those that filler will optimally address, however recently the trend is towards patients pursuing surgical intervention at a much younger age.

Q A

What is the downtime?

Post-surgical downtime varies depending on what type of surgery is performed. The majority of downtime is “social” meaning that patients are actually feeling great, and often forget that they still have bruising and swelling present. Physical downtime is generally 3-5 days with about 1-2 weeks of social downtime.

Q A

Will I still look like “me” after a facelift?

Yes. We strive for very natural results and, particularly with facelifting, tailor the procedure to each patient’s specific facial anatomy in order to restore their youthful appearance rather than having a specific “look” we strive for after surgery. Patients should feel like their own younger selves again after surgery and have their appearance reflect how energetic they feel.

Q A

What can I do at home to make my results last?

The foundation of any surgical or non-surgical procedure is in skincare. We recommend pre and post procedure skincare to all our patients and truly see results optimized when skincare is made a priority. This leads to an overall healthier, more youthful appearance and helps to achieve the “glow” that patients are often striving for.

NON-SURGICAL TREATMENTS Dr. Emily Hrisomalos

Patients often come in asking what non-invasive treatments can help in various areas of the face. We have created a facial roadmap to help explain what can help where. In general, neuromodulators (such as Botox) are used to improve or prevent lines created with muscle movement, called “dynamic” lines. Fillers (such as Juvederm) are generally used either for augmentation or to fill lines that are present at rest. Called “static” lines or shadows. Both can be utilized with very natural results depending on injector technique and patient preferences.

1

FOREHEAD

Movement of the brows creates transverse or horizontal lines in the upper forehead as well as vertical lines in the glabellar area that are referred to as “11s” and can inadvertently give off the impression of anger or fatigue. These are treated well with Botox which relaxes the muscles that create these lines. Without repetitive movement, these lines soften and often disappear leading to a smooth appearance of the forehead.

2

EYE AREA

Repetitive movement around the eye area such as smiling and squinting creates radial lines at the lateral aspect of the eyes referred to as “crows feet”. Botox relaxes these muscles and softens these lines. Conversely, the under-eye area is best treated with filler which can improve the appearance of shadows or dark circles that can cause a tired appearance.

3 4

CHEEK

The cheeks tend to lose volume with age causing the cheekbones to lose definition and become flat. Volume here and in the temples can be restored with filler.

LIPS

With age the corners of the mouth often become downturned and fine lines can develop around the lip border. Filler works very well to restore lip volume, fill in fine lines, and “upturn” the corners of the mouth. Botox can also help with fine lines.

5

LOWER FACE

Deep shadows often develop between the corners of the lips and the chin known as “marionette lines”. These are best treated with filler which can also be used along the jawline and chin to increase definition and projection.

SUMMER ZUCCHINI NOODLES WITH FRESH HERBS

PEA AND BACON PASTA SALAD

MAKES 4 SERVINGS

This recipe is a healthier version of one my childhood favorites. It brings back memories of long summer nights and the smell of a backyard cookout. Salty bacon, fresh peas and bow tie pasta are all smothered in a zesty dressing. This is the ultimate summer side dish, but it can also be eaten alone as a Meal Prep lunch. For an even heartier version, add a leftover grilled protein from your cookout.

This is the perfect recipe for a hot summer day! Bright, fresh herbs pair with tangy feta cheese. It all ties together with the delicious crunch of zucchini noodles. I love this recipe because it’s a light, low-carb option for the days you don’t want something heavy. It’s also an amazing Meal Prep recipe. Simply add some leftover grilled chicken to make an easy grab-and-go work lunch.

2 pints cherry tomatoes, sliced in half 1 tablespoon fresh dill, finely chopped 1 tablespoon fresh oregano, finely chopped 1 tablespoon fresh thyme leaves, finely chopped 1 tablespoon red wine vinegar 1 tablespoon extra-virgin olive oil 1 shallot, minced 2 cloves garlic, minced 2 zucchini, spiralized 1 yellow squash, spiralized 1 /3 cup crumbled goat or feta cheese Salt and pepper, to taste 1| In a medium bowl, add tomatoes, herbs and vinegar and gently stir to combine. Set aside. 2| In a large skillet with high sides, add olive oil. Heat pan over medium heat until simmering. Add shallot and stir for a minute. Add garlic and cook for a minute more (be careful not to burn the garlic). Add the zucchini and yellow squash noodles to the pan and cook until tender, but still has a little crispness (about 3-5 minutes). 3| Pour noodles into a large serving bowl, top with the tomato and herb mixture and sprinkle with cheese.

MAKES 4 SERVINGS

Salad

1 pound farfalle pasta, cooked according to package directions 1 (10 oz) bag frozen peas, thawed 1 /4 cup finely chopped red onion 1 bunch asparagus, finely chopped 1 red bell pepper, diced 1 green bell pepper, diced 6 slices chicken or turkey bacon Salt and pepper, to taste

Dressing

1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce 6 tablespoons light mayo 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard 1 /2 tablespoon honey Salt and pepper, to taste 1| Heat oven to 400 degrees. Place bacon on a parchment or foil-lined baking sheet. Bake in the oven for 16-20 minutes or until bacon is golden and crispy. Remove from the oven and place on a paper towel lined plate. Cool and crumble. 2| In a large bowl, mix together cooked and cooled pasta, pepper, asparagus, peas and bacon. 3| Mix together Worcestershire, mayo, mustard and honey in a small bowl. Pour dressing into bowl with pasta. Stir to combine. Portion into containers based on serving needs.

ADVERTORIAL

EXPERT ADVICE

SUNSCREEN: CONFUSION ON ALL FRONTS THE DANGERS OF TOO MUCH SUN Everyone agrees: Ultraviolet rays from sunlight can damage the skin. From painful sunburns to unsightly discolorated “age spots” to potentially deadly skin cancer, the verdict is clear: UV rays are bad for your health.

So you should avoid them, right? Sunscreen is a good thing, right? Not so fast. There’s more to the story than this. It depends in large part on what’s in the sunscreen.

The Danger of Protection from the Sun

The FDA (Food and Drug Administration) recently revealed results from a study that demonstrated toxic levels of four common sunscreen ingredients after just 4 days of application (as one might be exposed to, say, on vacation). For the record, the four toxic chemicals were/are oxybenzone, avobenzone, octocrylene, and ecamsule. One of these, oxybenzone, is a known endocrine disruptor, meaning that it can adversely affect metabolism of important hormones throughout the body. And it’s not that these chemicals are found slightly higher than the established safety threshold, it’s that their levels are way, way higher than what’s considered safe. In fact, other studies have demonstrated that it takes, on average, less than a minute, sometimes just seconds for chemicals applied to your skin to enter your bloodstream. And from there they spread throughout the body.

And Then There’s Vitamin D

And, to make matters even more confusing, it appears that Vitamin D is actually protective against the most dangerous, potentially fatal, type of skin cancer there is: melanoma. And by virtue of the fact that they block dangerous UV rays, they also block the absorption of Vitamin D, which comes from the sun.

Different Types of Rays

But wait, there’s more: Let’s say you find a sunscreen that’s safe, containing no dangerous chemicals at all. Now you need to know that the SPF number you find on the label only indicates protection against UVB rays, not UVA. And both types are dangerous. Fortunately, over the past several years, more and more companies are recognizing the growing demand for UVA protection and are offering products that do just that. But you have to look. You have to do your homework.

When In Doubt, Use Minerals

Two particular sun blockers that appear to be among the safest contain minerals, either Zinc Oxide or Titanium Dioxide. Applied topically, these minerals block both UVA and UVB and contain none of those dangerous chemicals found in most sunscreens. Is it possible to apply too much of either of these? Theoretically, maybe, but compared to other options, these appear to be much safer.

Learn More. Educate Yourself

For more information, I recommend visiting the website of the Environmental Working Group, www.ewg,org. Every year, this group publishes an online sunscreen guide reviewing the safest, and most dangerous, sunscreen options on the market. And, while you’re at it, check out their Skin Deep data base, too. If you think sunscreens are a problem, consider all the other chemicals you apply every day in the form of soaps, shampoos, conditioners, moisturizers, fragrances, makeup, and more.

But if you’re looking for more ways to glam up your second-day hair, we’ve got you covered. Use a clear elastic for each braid.

CHANNELING COACHELLA Go Boho, babe! Start by pulling a portion of your hair into a half-up, half-down ponytail. Once that is secured, take the front pieces of hair (on both the left and right sides), and put them in Dutch braids, all the way down. Next, take the pieces in the back that you left down, and do braids on both sides. Gently mess up each of the braids to give them a “lived-in” look. Wrap the two back braids around your ponytail, and secure the two front braids around those back braids with a hair pin. You’ll finish with all four braids wrapped around the original ponytail. Model, Josie Sanders

ROMANTIC WAVES Beachy tresses are beautiful this time of year, but why not take them a step further by adding these whimsical twists? Start with simple curls (courtesy of whatever curling tool you prefer). Next, take the front pieces of hair on both sides of your face and twist them back to the middle of your head. Secure those twists with hair pins and you’ll have a lovely half-up do. Leave it as is, or opt for a full updo by grabbing the hair in the back of your head and twisting it in one direction. Secure this with hair pins or a cute metal clip for an effortless style for all ages. Model, Brooke Gigante

PULL ON THROUGH Gather a small section of hair at the top of your head for a half-up ponytail. Secure that with a clear elastic and then clip it up so you can grab another section directly below that. Once you have that second section tied, you’ll grab the top section, separate it around the second, and secure that with an elastic. Repeat this step until you run out of hair. Mess it up by pulling on sections of hair to separate the braid and make it wider. For a fun variation, pull the bottom in toward the lower part of your head, and secure with hair pins for a chic final look. While this style sounds hard, it’s really quite simple once you’ve had a little practice. Model, Joy Cain

STAYING IN THE LOOP If you can’t find the right hair accessories, don’t worry. “Hair decorations” are one of Kit’s favorite new trends. Here, we tied in a timeless oversized clip and sweet scarf. To achieve this look, start with simple beach waves and a half-up ponytail. Next, make a hole directly above the ponytail holder, and then flip the end of the ponytail through that hole. Pull at the hairs that were turned in to give the style some texture, and voila! You have the first option. For something a bit more, grab those hair decorations and get ready to play! Secure the front of your hair back with the clip and tie the scarf around the ponytail in whatever fashion you prefer. The small pieces are a perfect way to punctuate those lovely summer locks. FUN BEHIND THE SCENES

Life can’t be all work and no play — especially with a scenic set and a talented, entertaining crew!

This scarf from Karisma adds a sweet touch!

Over-sized barrettes are everywhere this summer! Thanks Hamilton County Parks and Recreation Department for allowing us to shoot at the beautiful Osprey Park Pavilion at Morse Park and Beach.

THAT’S A WRAP Take the timeless style of Audrey Hepburn, add a dash of the intentionally disheveled look we’re loving this season, and you’ve got a sensational warm-weather statement. You’ll need a summery head scarf for this option. Begin by curling your hair into loose beach waves. Next, pull the hair from one side of your head over to the other, but leave some larger pieces in the front (usually using your dominant hand is easiest). Then simply twist your hair into a loose French twist. Wrap your head scarf around while leaving your front pieces out. Finish by pulling at the French twist to loosen up the hair and add a touch of texture. Model, Brooke Gigante

CATCH OF THE DAY At Kit, we believe that the only thing better than a great fishtail braid, is more fishtail braids! For this look, you’re going to start with a side Dutch braid, pulled out for texture. Pull the rest of your hair into a side ponytail, and secure it with a clear elastic. Next, pull a bit of hair and wrap that around the elastic to hide it. Place a fishtail braid in the side ponytail, from the top to about halfway down. Secure that with a clear elastic, and follow the same step of wrapping a little bit of hair around the elastic. If you’re a fishtail fanatic, you can add little fishtail braids to the remaining hair. Pull at all of the fishtails and braids to add some texture, and go reel in some compliments for your handy work! Model, Josie Sanders

NOT AFRAID TO BRAID Just start crossing strands, and we’ll guide you through the rest. Start with multiple braids around your head (we had six). After you’ve secured all of your braids with clear elastics, pull at them to loosen and separate the sections. Next, wrap the braids around your head and secure them with hair pins. You’ll take pieces from the left side of your head, and wrap them to the right, and vice versa. When you’ve wrapped/stacked the last braid, pull at the braids to mess them up a bit and achieve that trendy, undone look. Not only is this option perfect for a day at the beach or a night on the town, it’s incredibly easy to master! Model, Joy Cain

EASY BREEZY This look is simple, but it’s so chic, making it the perfect option to keep in your toolkit for days when you’re running late to work or grabbing drinks with friends. Start with a small half-up bun, secured with a clear elastic. Leave some pieces down in the front. Spread the bun by grabbing the sides and making it a little wider. Next, take a piece of hair and wrap it around the elastic to add some glam. You can curl the rest of your hair or leave it straight, and even add some decorations if you feel like elevating the look. This method is quick, adorable and sure to be your summer soul mate. Model, Kari Kirk

skin secrets: ONE SMALL MACHINE CAN HELP ERASE SUN DAMAGE THIS SUMMER We bet you didn’t know it, but there’s an annual cycle in the skin care business. It really speaks to how our lives here in the Midwest evolve every season. Because our summers are so short and seem to arrive straight out of winter with barely a few weeks of spring to precede them, we tend to embrace them by flying full-tilt through the longer days, enjoying the outdoors and keeping our calendars full. At The Lifestyle Spa, we know when summer arrives not by the date, but by the sudden shift in our reservations toward lighter maintenance treatments, such as Theravedic Facials and Chemical Peels. Nobody has time for downtime during the summer, so more aggressive, results-based treatments like the age-defying HALO Laser or the brown-spot obliterating BBL Photofacial almost disappear from our schedules until the fall arrives. While we understand why this cycle happens, the irony is that it’s during these months that most of the UV damage we see on our skins takes place.

What’s a summer-lover to do about maintaining great skin? One word: Vivace. We found the extraordinary Vivace RF device to be the ideal solution for our sun-loving, booked-to-theminute patients. Vivace is the nextgeneration of skin care, combining microneedling and radio-frequency technology to contour and tighten the skin of the face, neck and body. Vivace immediately stimulates the skin to produce new collagen, reducing fine lines and scars and softening wrinkles all without downtime or pain. The treatment can be performed in the morning and you’ll be comfortable going out that evening, with only minor redness. Best of all, Vivace requires only an hour out of your schedule, and can be performed on any skin type or color. We were a bit skeptical at first, but after experiencing it ourselves we became true believers. It’s the perfect bridge for summer skin care – great benefits and maintenance – without a commitment to downtime; perfect for those of us with schedules that leave us little time for ourselves.

Vivace’s 36 micro-needles deliver RF energy into the deeper layers of the skin to stimulate an immediate response.

EXPERT ADVICE Q+A

VARICOSE VEINS DURING AND AFTER PREGNANCY

BY DR. DANIELLE CAMPBELL, MD OF ASCENSION, CARMEL VEIN SOLUTIONS

Varicose veins are fairly common during pregnancy, affecting 10-20% of pregnant women. In many cases, these swollen blood vessels predominantly found in the legs, will reduce to normal size after the baby is born. In some cases, the change is permanent but there are options to treat the problem.

Schedule now at: Ascension Carmel Vein Solutions 317-582-7676 13450 N. Meridian St, Suite 160 Carmel, IN 46032

Q A

What are varicose veins?

Varicose veins are large, swollen blood vessels found predominantly in the legs, but can show up almost anywhere in the lower half of your body – even your rectum or vulva. When they swell above the surface of the skin, they create lumps that tend to be purple in color and may look alarming but are typically not a medical problem.

Q A

»

»

When Do Varicose Veins Start to Appear During Pregnancy?

»

Varicose veins can develop anytime during your pregnancy, but they tend to get larger and more pronounced as you gain weight through your pregnancy. After birth, those leg bulges will recede, and you will look like your pre-pregnant self again in most cases.

»

Q A

What Causes Varicose Veins During Pregnancy?

The extra volume of blood you produce during pregnancy is essential to support two growing bodies. It does, however, put extra pressure on your blood vessels – especially the veins in your legs, which have to work against gravity to push all that extra blood back up to your heart. Add to that, weight gain and the pressure your ever-growing bump puts on your pelvic blood vessels, and the vessel-relaxing effects of the extra progesterone your body is producing, and you have a perfect situation for varicose veins.

Q A

What Can I Do About Varicose Veins When I’m Pregnant?

There are some tricks you can try that may help minimize varicose veins that show up during pregnancy, or at least keep them under control. If they do pop up, here are some possible remedies and tips: » Keep your blood flowing. Get off your feet whenever you can, and keep your legs elevated when sitting. Flex your ankles every so often, and break the habit of sitting with your legs crossed (this strategy also helps keep spider veins at bay). » Get moving. Exercise is key in preventing varicose

veins – so take a walk (or even better still, several walks) each day. Rely on comfortable clothing. Make sure you wear clothes — including underwear — that fit well and don’t bind, especially around the tops of your legs. Extra support. Support hose can counteract the downward pressure of your belly and give the veins in your legs a little extra upward push. Watch your weight. Keep your weight gain during pregnancy down to what your practitioner recommends – usually 25 to 35 pounds. Sleep on your left side. This helps avoid pressure on your main blood vessels and mantains good circulation. Don’t strain. Heavy lifting or straining on the toilet can add to vein pop ups. Remember to take your vitamins. A balanced pregnancy diet keeps veins healthy. Make sure to eat lots of foods with vitamin C, which your body uses to produce collagen and elastin (connective tissues that repair and maintain blood vessels). When Should I Call the Doctor About Varicose Veins During Pregnancy?

As soon as you notice them. Because there is a general association between varicose veins and the risk of deep vein thrombosis (DVT), or blood clots. Be sure your health care provider is aware of your condition. LAST THOUGHT: If your varicose veins don’t go away after the baby has arrived, you can think about having them medically treated or surgically removed then, just not during pregnancy.

EVERYDAY WELLNESS TIPS FOR EVERY STAGE OF LIFE There’s so much more to overall wellness than keeping up with routine screenings and immunizations. From infancy through our senior years, the things that contribute to a healthy life look different with each passing age. Nutrition, mental health, fitness and prevention are considered the key difference-makers. Here, local physicians clue us in to the positive well-being choices we can make for ourselves and family members during the different stages of life.

31

EARLY CHILDHOOD

ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

Dr. Rinku Sehgal, a family medicine doctor for Ascension, encourages breastfeeding in infancy, because it decreases the chance of autoimmune diseases and obesity. She also reminds parents to get immunizations done in a timely fashion and get routine screenings for autism and behavioral disorders. Dr. Sehgal says the type of food the child is eating is very important. It’s best to increase protein intake and serve more natural foods. Kids should also be active outside for at least two hours a day. The Vitamin D found in sunlight reduces the risks of visual impairments, anxiety and obesity. Limit screen time, Dr. Sehgal says. And no screen time until they are at least two years old.

If possible, Dr. Sehgal suggests kids move from screens to paper as much as possible to avoid visual impairments. “Studies have shown that lessons are grasped better on paper, anyway,” she says. Enforce 8-10 hours of sleep and plenty of outdoor play. Dr. Sehgal says it’s important to screen for counseling at a young age, because when an emotional wound is at a surface level, it’s easier to treat than when the issue goes deeper.

JUNIOR HIGH

HIGH SCHOOL

Because the media we consume changes the brain and thought process, it’s important to implement restricted access to all Internetenabled devices, Dr. Sehgal says. “Counseling, supervision and guidance are your friends as you parent this age group. Observe any behavior changes, watch their social circles and speak frankly and openly with them.”

COLLEGEAGE This stage is all about self-reliance. They should feel confident making healthy food choices and smart decisions on their own. They should also be able to set long-term goals, as well as milestones for achieving them, Dr. Sehgal says.

By this stage of life the child should have a grasp on good nutrition, how to deal with stress and responsibility, understand the value of money, and know what commitment and a balanced life looks like. If the child is obese, Dr. Sehgal suggests getting a cholesterol check. She also recommends teaching all teens about STDs and STIs, drugs and alcohol.

20s This stage is all about self-leadership and developing a loving relationship with one's self. “Help 20-somethings continue prioritizing their health,” Dr. Sehgal says. “Show them how to steer away from obesity, anxiety and depression. Teach them mindful meditation, and advise them to understand their emotions and deal with them using healthy coping mechanisms.”

Set an example

Parents have a huge influence on their kids’ health journeys. They build the foundation early on, set the example as kids get older, and influence and guide adolescent kids into adulthood. At the same time, parents have the equally important responsibility of caring for themselves. We can’t care for others at the best of our ability unless we’re taking the best possible care of ourselves first. Before computers, video games and 300 cable channels, people were far more active than they are today. Outside activity and entertainment were second-nature and weren’t thought of as formal exercise. Dr. Carol Weesner, an emergency medicine physician and owner of Motion 4 Life Fitness, says the best way for adults to influence kids to exercise is to make physical activity a consistent part of the day. “We don’t all have to lift weights, run a marathon, or bike the Tour de France. We are talking about things like playing outside, walking together, bike rides or hiking,” she says. In addition to activity, parents need to set a good example in the food they eat. Adults should include a lot of fruits and vegetables in the family diet and limit drinks with significant sugar. And at any age, activity and good nutrition is often easier to maintain when shared with other people. This not only results in higher accountability, but increases social interaction. Connectivity with others is very important as we age.

40s

50s

60s

PTSD and other mental illnesses become more prevalent at this age. “Turn off the TV! This is not a form of relaxation,” Dr. Seghal says. Do something more productive to unwind, and debrief what happened during the day by journaling, taking a walk, meditating or praying. Keep up a good routine of diet and exercise, because if we’re taking care of ourselves first, we can take better care of our families.

The stress level goes up at this age because we’re trying to achieve and acquire so much. At this stage, we are maxed out with responsibilities, which is why it’s more important than ever to take care of ourselves. Oftentimes, that good care starts with our headspace. “If we do not declutter our minds, we will never be truly rested and refreshed, no matter how much sleep we’re getting,” Dr. Sehgal says. “The more emotion and stress that we’re not dealing with during the day, the worse our sleep will be.”

Diet and exercise are more important now because this age is more prone to diabetes, heart problems and high blood pressure. Pay special attention to the warnings on medications. Get tests done as preventative measures. Practice good sleep hygiene, which means observing a set bedtime and wake time. Limit water intake in the evening and stay away from caffeine and alcohol before bed. “Contrary to popular belief, alcohol does not help with the quality of sleep. You won’t wake refreshed,” Dr. Sehgal warns.

According to Dr. Pat Healey, a geriatrician with Ascension, 80% of 65-year-old adults have at least one chronic disease. The most common ones are arthritis, hypertension, heart disease or adult onset diabetes. These are all diseases we can control without inhibiting quality of life. However, when we pile on more than one of those chronic diseases, that’s when it does affect function. “Everyone thinks heredity determines how long you’re going to live, but that’s only 20% of the equation,” Dr. Healey says. “Other factors are mental health, socioeconomic status because of access to healthcare, and luck.”

At this stage, Dr. Healey says twothirds of adults have three or more chronic diseases. Today, chronic diseases are just an inconvenience, but pair those with the effects of aging, and the risk of illness goes up. “What diseases you pick up may have nothing to do with how well you’ve cared for yourself over the years. Sometimes it’s just about the role luck plays,” Dr. Healey says. At this stage of life, he suggests moving away from preventative care and into holistic care.

Living well into one’s 80’s and 90’s can now be perfectly realistic. It's important to ask yourself what you want this phase of life to look like, and then set medical goals for that. It’s also important to recognize that this can be a stage of loss — financial, relational, physical, mental, etc. Therefore, people who handle losses well, are the ones who age well, Healey says. “Over age 75, we don’t have a lot of medical guidelines,” Healey says. “We let the patient guide us, rather than letting medical guidelines direct us.

Arteriosclerosis (hardening of the arteries) is the No. 1 cause of death in this decade, so talk with your physician about how to prevent heart disease. “We’re all scared of cancer, but we’re dying of hardening of the arteries,” Dr. Healey says.

Four out of 10 adults who are 85 or older have dementia. Alzheimer's disease falls into this category. Make sure, as you age, people you’re close to know how you feel about medical treatments. Have those tough conversations so your loved ones feel comfortable with how to execute your wishes.

Feel like you’re walking a tightrope? Family caregivers perform complex balancing acts every day. Carrying responsibilities for family, work, homemaking, errands, etc. is hard enough. Add caring for a family member with aging or disability needs, and suddenly you can feel like the slightest breeze may send it all crashing down. You don’t have to do it alone. ADVENTURE. SERVICE. FAMILY. BY VICKI MAYNARD Pictured: Vicki and her two grandchildren, Graham and Gwendolyn

TODAY, AN ESTIMATED THREE MILLION OLDER ADULTS ARE CARING FOR THEIR GRANDCHILDREN. Many years ago, I was one of those grandchildren. My grandparents were in their 60s when they committed to raising my brother and me during a time when it was much less common.

My grandmother was my haven during a very turbulent time in my childhood. She taught me about unconditional love and about serving others. She not only taught it, she modeled it every day with her own sacrifice to raise her grandchildren. My grandfather taught us to take risks and to love adventure. Practically every summer, we took a trip to the western United States, where we explored the desert and the mountains with him. He always believed his very best days were ahead of him and modeled that behavior for us daily. 35

"AS A CHILD RAISED BY HER GRANDPERNTS, I HAVE A HEIGHTENED AWARENESS AND A DELIBERATENESS ABOUT HOW I WANT TO BE A PART OF MY GRANDCHILDREN'S LIVES."

I was blessed to have them in my life until they were well into their 90s. They were very engaged great-grandparents to my two boys, and they provided the same unconditional love only grandparents can provide. Fast forward to today. Now, I am a grandmother. There are no words to describe the love I feel for my grandchildren. I am the same age my grandparents were when they became parents, again. As a child raised by her grandparents, I have a heightened awareness and a deliberateness about how I want to be a part of my grandchildren’s lives. I think I can sum it up best in three foundational gifts I'd like to impart on them: adventure, service and family.

ADVENTURE It's now my turn to pay it forward with my grandchildren, by being the one to introduce them to adventure trails and caves and tell them stories of big, brown bears. I want to explore our state and national parks with them. I want them to climb trees, play in the dirt, walk across creeks, pick up rocks and pretend they have magical powers. I want them to appreciate the beauty, diversity and creativity of nature.

SERVICE I want them to look for the good in others and discover the joy and fulfillment of serving. Service not only promotes well-being in the community, it provides well-being personally. I hope my grandchildren will be superheroes and fight for justice and equality.

36 kitindy.com

FAMILY Growing up, watching sports together reinforced family values and helped create unbelievably strong bonds. Loyalty, endurance, passion and sportsmanship were all things we learned while cheering on our favorite teams. (Well, sometimes we slipped a little and occasionally lacked in the sportsmanship area.) We would disagree with a referee’s opinion or a coach’s particular play call, but win or lose we supported our teams. The same was true about family. No family is perfect. We experienced dropped balls and occasionally disagreed with the "referee", but being a part of a strong family was always knowing you had a team on your side. My hope today is that, in some fashion, I can be an example of these foundational values for my grandchildren. While at the same time, also doing all the expected grandmother things, like being their protector from the outside world and their biggest supporter in their endeavors, no matter their level of talent. And I promise that every chance I get, I'll tell them stories about another time and another set of grandparents. The outstanding grandparents who provided me with such valuable gifts and experiences, and who taught me about adventure, service and the immeasurable importance of family.

SIMPLE STEPS TO FINANCIAL CONFIDENCE

ANDREW FIEGA ChFC, CLTC, Financial Advisor, Fiega Consulting

38 kitindy.com

I

n the financial planning world, the phrase “financial confidence” is often thrown around. But what does it mean? To me, a financial advisor, financial confidence isn’t about how much money a client has saved or invested; it’s about how much knowledge they have about their overall financial situation and current and future goals.

"I BELEIEVE FINANCIAL CONFIDENCE IS ONLY ACHIEVED WHEN A PLAN IS DEVELOPED, MONITORED, AND — AS THINGS CHANGE — REVISED." UNDERSTANDING YOUR CURRENT FINANCIAL PICTURE

WORKING WITH A FINANCIAL PROFESSIONAL

Mastering the state of your current finances is often the most overwhelming part of the financial planning process. It includes pinning down your monthly budget and comparing it to what is being spent. The deeper you look into your spending, the better you’ll understand what you must do to meet your goals.

There are financial institutions and advisors on almost every street corner, with different experiences, abilities, and service levels. There is no one-fit solution for everyone. You should find a good financial professional you feel comfortable with, someone who studies your entire financial situation and presents a plan with different options. Once you agree upon the plan, consistent monitoring is required to make sure you do not veer off-course. I believe financial confidence is only achieved when a plan is developed, monitored, and – as things change – revised.

IDENTIFYING YOUR GOALS One of the first questions I ask my clients – both individuals and couples – is, “What is important to you?” The answer determines both short-term and long-term financial planning. If the answer is, “traveling the world,” we would look at that client’s current financial situation and realistically decide if they are booking a trip next month or in five years. Determining what is important gives purpose. It also can reign in unnecessary spending, helping you meet your goals.

▢▢ I KNOW where I am invested and what my money is doing. ▢▢ I KNOW my options to help protect my family financially. ▢▢ I KNOW our monthly budget, and I routinely review it.

▢▢ I KNOW the progress we have made and how much more is needed to reach our goals. ▢▢ I KNOW how to access my accounts and important documents. ▢▢ I HAVE a written financial plan, and I review it regularly.

KIT

BEST BLUSH Story by Susan Beckwith | Photos by Kyle Williams

My son’s nursery is quite rustic, so for our second baby, a little girl, I was excited to focus on incorporating plenty of feminine touches.

We chose Faint Coral from SherwinWilliams® for the walls.

41 kitindy.com

I wanted something soft and peaceful, and I believe we accomplished our vision. We painted the room in Faint Coral by Sherwin-Williams®, which is a beautiful blush color. I was originally drawn to the idea of wallpaper, but decided these floral decals were a better fit. They created the same effect with a fraction of the cost and less work. Plus, they were easy to install and can be taken down and even reused. Regarding the furniture, I used an antique hall tree I already owned. I loved the elegance it added to the room. We paired it with a wicker dresser that provides plenty of storage. To give the dresser even more personality, we switched out the knobs for some more decorative ones that complemented the color of the room. I love that the combination is an unexpected pairing. We placed a brushed gold Jenny Lind crib in the middle of the feature wall. It's flanked by ivory custom drapes with lots of rich texture. I found them at Adkins Draperies in Westfield, and I’m always impressed with their selection, competitive pricing and terrific customer service. Lastly, our Willow glider made by Best Chairs and purchased from buy, buy BABY, is perfect for rocking into the wee hours of the night.

When decorating, I’ve learned that rugs can have a huge impact. They can help anchor a room, add warmth and even layer a room's decor. This gently distressed, rosecolored, 8-foot round rug from Wayfair truly helped define this sweet space. To keep the room from feeling too sophisticated and to add some whimsy, I selected these bunny prints from Etsy and had them custom framed by Creative Framing Concepts in Carmel. Once we had all the larger pieces, it was time to add the special touches. This included twinkle lights on the fiddle tree, the Sweet Dreams medallion made by Marie Ricci on the ceiling above the chandelier, the littler wicker buggy from Horton’s in Tipton and an antique miniature tea set gifted from my aunt, whom I’m named after.

Combining two of our favorite things, style and florals, Allisonville Nursery recently held their sixth spring fashion show, Fashion in Bloom, highlighting the summer's hottest trends. With clothing from local favorite Blue Peppermint Boutique and jewelry by Jill Duzan, the event gave attendees a peek at the popular styles that will be taking over closets in the months to come. We couldn't resist showcasing some of our favorite looks.

HIGH FASHION

LADY IN LACE

High-waisted shorts are always in style, but when they’re snakeskin, they demand attention. Balance out the shorts with a tucked in top to accentuate your waistline. Hayley is wearing a sleek black top with dramatic bell sleeves and edgy sterling silver feather pendant earrings with sliced diamond posts from Jill Duzan.

For summer concerts, dinner on the canal, or lounging by the pool, this dress makes the perfect date. The feminine, flowy frock features intricate lace detailing, with peach and mustard floral embroidery on the capped sleeves. Sydney’s also wearing an artisan ankle bracelet by Jill Duzan for a touch of glam.

TOSS ON A TASSEL

ALTOGETHER COOL

We love this ageless kaftan with a fun tassel trim paired with must-have cropped jeans by Flying Monkey. Combined with a Silverite, pearl and labradorite pendant, long diamond necklace, and silver pave diamond bangle stacked with a Thai silver pillow bead bracelet by Jill Duzan, this ensemble is summer chic. Don't forget a straw hat when you step outside.

Blue Peppermint knows what your closet needs – this versatile black jumpsuit. With adjustable straps and a tie at the waist, this piece can be worn to the grocery store or to your next fancy event. It's perfect as is, but pair the jumpsuit with a statement necklace and diamond earrings by Jill Duzan, and you'll have an elevated look suitable for any soirée.

KEEP IT CASUAL

We just can't get enough of kimonos! Kathryn’s white denim jeans (a definite summer must) and blush lace-trim cami pair perfectly with this floral option. Accessorize the look with a double strand pink Silverite bracelet and long sterling silver earrings from Jill Duzan to bring out the blush tones in the print.

This white eagle muscle tank and edgy knit skirt will have you rocking all night long at your next summer concert. The eye-catching Jill Duzan wrapped leather bracelet with a sterling silver chain and freshwater pearl makes a striking sidekick to the fun rocker vibe.

The man in your life will love this Kemmeter short sleeve performance check shirt by Untuckit. The moisturewicking, wrinkle-free material helps him keep his cool when the weather heats up. With the right threads, he can really pull off that pulled together, yet untucked trend.

BUSINESS CASUAL

FLATTERING AND FLOWY

MAN UP

Andrea's look resides at the intersection of relaxed and refined. The Janelle vest, paired with a blush lace trim cami for a soft pop of color, and mid-rise cropped jeans from Flying Monkey create an easygoing, business casual combination. Give the look a polished promotion with sliced diamond and pave diamond statement earrings by Jill Duzan and a pair of smart espadrilles.

This adorable midi sage-colored dress is perfect for petite frames, and great with any skin tone. Not only is it incredibly flattering, but its trendyt retro-tie front adds a fresh detail. To complete the look, Morgan is wearing lightweight abalone briolette earrings and two bracelets from the Artful, Ancient, Modern collection by Jill Duzan.

Guys, shirts by Untuckit are the perfect piece for your warm-weather wardrobe because you can rock them solo or dress them up with a sport coat. These shirts are easy to wear with a pair of comfy jeans or more professional pants, taking you from backyard barbecue to evening benefit.

FORT WAYNE’S PROMENADE PARK

OLD TOWN, NEW VIEWS T By Tessa Judge + Illustrations by Chad Von Borstel

KIT

Fort Wayne, Indiana, situated about two hours northeast of Indianapolis, has been known by locals and tourists alike for its children’s zoo, Botanical Conservatory and Science Central. Now, starting this August, a brand new attraction is taking up residency. Promenade Park, opening August 9, will serve as the new “front door” to Fort Wayne’s three rivers – the St. Marys, the St. Joseph and the Maumee. These rivers have historically been ideal for enjoying boat rides and tours, kayaking and canoeing, biking along riverfront pathways, and more. Blurring the line between city living and outdoor adventuring, the community’s development and construction of Promenade Park takes it all one step further.

TOP Rendering of Park Foundation Pavilion BOTTOM Aerial rendering of Promenade Park from the northwest side.

Located along the north and south banks of the St. Marys River, Promenade Park will be “providing new access points and enhancing current access points to Fort Wayne’s three rivers,” says Jessa Campbell, Marketing and Communications Coordinator with Visit Fort Wayne. “Being located in downtown Fort Wayne, it will be a great source for entertainment, exploration and fun any time of year!”

1.

While its central, riverside location makes the park accessible and enjoyable for all, its numerous amenities are what really set Promenade Park apart. For starters, the Tree Top Canopy Trail promises a never-before-seen view of downtown Fort Wayne. This elevated public walking trail allows visitors to take a stroll while admiring the river, downtown skyline and surrounding trees from a birds-eye view. In fact, the park’s trees play a large part in the construction of the trail. The project’s designers chose to wind the trail through the mature trees that already stand in the park and the many new ones that are currently being planted. This, they hope, will create the feeling that guests are literally walking among the trees. While the Tree Top Canopy Trail gives Promenade Park a certain wow factor, the park’s many other features are just as exciting. In addition to enjoying the new trail, visitors will have public access to Auer Lawn,

2.

a large grassy area equipped with picnic spots, ping pong tables, corn hole sets and adult swings. The Doermer Kids Canal will provide a safe environment for little ones who want to splash around. Trubble Riverside Cafe and Tap will be the perfect spot to grab a bite and a brew. And visitors can still take full advantage of riverfront activities, including kayaking, canoeing and tours aboard Sweet Breeze, the city’s authentic 1840s riverboat replica. Access to the park and all of its amenities is completely free, but rentals and tours will have fees, so be sure to plan ahead. Fort Wayne’s three rivers have long been a part of the city’s history, and now they have an important role in the city’s future. As the natural inspiration for the development of Promenade Park, these rivers continue to flow and bring joy to the people of Fort Wayne. “This new park will be a way for visitors and locals to return to our roots and celebrate the great sources of entertainment and recreation located in the heart of the city,” promises Campbell.

3.

So, make your way to Promenade Park for the Grand Opening Celebration, August 9-11. The event will feature a floating band performance, community art projects, a lighted boat parade, butterfly release, boat rides, and so much more. The celebration is free and open to all who want to experience what Fort Wayne truly does best: gathering in community to experience peaceful natural wonders amidst the hum of the city.

THREE DAYS IN PARKE COUNTY One of the best things about our beloved Hoosier state is its hidden treasures and sweet surprises at every turn. Parke County, located about an hour and a half directly west of Indianapolis on U.S. 36, is one of Indiana’s greatest treasures, with its 31 covered bridges, Turkey Run State Park and mouthwatering tenderloins the size of your head. We asked a local resident to share her Parke County pointers for a few days in the scenic city.

KIT

DAY ONE

TURKEY RUN STATE PARK Turkey Run State Park might be the most well-known part of Parke County. Its hiking trails, towering trees and sandstone canyons beckon nature lovers of every age and skill level. Winding its way through the park is Sugar Creek, one of Indiana’s most scenic rivers, where visitors can enjoy a day of kayaking, canoeing and leisurely tubing on the water. “It’s gorgeous in every season,” says Parke County resident Courtney Prather. “This hilly landmark feels like it was picked up from the mountains and transplanted to Indiana.” After working up an appetite at the park, you’ve got a few options. For

52 kitindy.com

lunch, make sure to stop at the Turkey Run Inn within the park or Up the Creek Boat-ique. “It’s a small, eclectic gas station-turned-restaurant with a Key West-meets-Jimmy Buffet vibe. They have amazing salads, breadsticks and homemade piña coladas!” offers Prather. Before turning in for the evening, head to Under the Arch for an award-winning, gigantic tenderloin. Finish it all off with something sweet from Gobblers Knob Sweets, Eats, & Mercantile. For accommodations, spend a night at the tranquil Turkey Run Inn or at any of the other nine lodging options within two miles of the park.

DAY TWO

ROCKVILLE

TOP LEFT The AwardWinning Wheel House Donuts is a great start to the day! BOTTOM LEFT Stumble in to the Drunk Tank Winery, right below the Old Jail Inn. BOTTOM RIGHT A picturesqe town square is surrounded by shops, art galleries and restaurants.

After a day of hiking, head to Rockville for a little shopping and a lot of food. Get your pastry fix at the Flour Basket Bakery & Cafe or Wheel House Donuts, where visitors can choose their own donut toppings and snap a cool picture. “Wheel House Donuts is every Instagrammer’s dream,” says Prather. “They converted a house into the donut shop, and there are some great photo ops, like their turquoise couch and huge donut. I love their warm, fresh cake donuts.” In fact, Wheel House Donuts won Most Creative Donut at the Indy Donut Fest in 2018. After initiating your caffeine and sugar buzz, Rockville’s quaint town square, is the perfect place for a morning of shopping. Browse antique stores, urban farmchic shops, an art gallery, and more. Drop into some local eateries for lunch or dinner. Aaron’s on the Square, open Thursdays through Sundays, and Thirty-Six Saloon, a biker and barbecue joint, both offer impressive food and a memorable atmosphere. During the summer, the Saloon pulls out the hog pit, opens up the outdoor patio and often has live music. When you’re all shopped out and your stomach’s satisfied, spend the afternoon at Rockville Lake Park, where you can savor the soft crunch of earth beneath your feet and the sweet breeze off the lake in your hair. The lake is known as one of the best for fishing in the Midwest, so don’t forget your pole! Wind down at the Drunk Tank Winery, just below the historic Old Jail Inn, and enjoy an unusual and entertaining wine tasting. Ready to call it a night? Rest your head at one of the 12 accomodation options within one mile of Rockville.

DAY THREE

RACCOON LAKE A popular camping, boating and fishing spot, Raccoon Lake is a great bookend to your Parke County visit. Boasting a beach, five launch ramps and a handful of boat rental outlets, it’s a great place to enjoy a day out on the water with family and friends. Pass the time fishing, swimming, water skiing, playing beach volleyball or just enjoying the views. Hiking trails abound at Raccoon Lake. With multiple options ranging in difficulty, the park has a trail for every level of hiker. Don’t miss the park’s most unique and challenging path: the Archery Trail! Bring your bow, because this trail begins at the parking lot and winds through the Twin Ponds, with options for archery enthusiasts to shoot at stationary targets and from elevated stands along a simulated practice trail. When you’re ready for a bite to eat, head to Sparky’s Roadhouse for food, drinks and the occasional cornhole tournament. Satisfy your sweet tooth with gelato from the Tiki Hut, ice cream from Gilstrap’s Big Berry Drive-in or Amish goodies from the Bellmore Country Store. Turn in for the evening at one of the four lodging options on Raccoon Lake. With so many ways to unwind, this area is a summer travel must. “Parke County is filled with small town charm with some great landmarks and festivals peppered in,” says Prather. “For being such a small community, we have some amazing things going on.” So, pack up the car, head to Parke County, and see what all the fuss is about.

RACHEL’S RENO TIPS Photography by Kyle Williams

When Rachel and her husband decided to flip this 1970s, tri-level house, their first priority was finding ways to make it feel like a home. One of the structure’s most charming elements is the double door entryway, which is fairly uncommon in more modern homes. Rachel knew that replacing the doors would detract from the house’s character, so instead of removing them, she gave them an update. She applied a contemporary look that required merely a vision, some eye-catching paint, a few tools, a bold light fixture and a little elbow grease. If your front porch could use more curb appeal, consider Rachel’s five tips for elevating any drab entryway.

56 kitindy.com

CLEAN SLATE It’s best to start with a blank canvas. Paint a nice neutral tone from floor to ceiling to make your entry bright and inviting.

COLOR COMPANIONS Take your time finding a shade that speaks to you for your front door. It should also complement the rest of your home. Rachel used Kiltz Bamboo Forest, a lively and versatile tone.

SCREEN TIME If you have screen doors, try Rachel’s trick for adding a subtle pop of color. Uninstall the doors and apply a finish, like this champagne bronze. The tasteful touch is a wink to glamour. Hue knew?

ABOVE AND BEYOND Be the neighbor they look up to. Consider installing cedar planks on your porch ceiling, like Rachel did. The Movarian Star pendant light was the perfect accessory to punctuate the botanical vibe.

DELIGHT IN THE DETAILS Add your own personality to the outdoor space with some bronze street numbers, a decorative doormat with a quirky saying on it and some comfy chairs. Be bold, have fun and create an area where you can relax.

SUMMEr Recipes + Photos by Kate Costello

It was as a young girl, spending time at the neighborhood pool in my hometown, when I first experienced the sensations of both ease and excitement simultaneously. I’d wait months to sink into the cool, refreshing water, and once I was there, nothing could rival that blissful tranquility. Since then, any invitation to take a dip sparks a familiar childlike joy. For the summer issue of Kit, I couldn’t resist assembling a menu to match the easygoing jubilation of an afternoon pool party. These dishes require minimum effort, freeing you up for hours of floating with friends. Any prep work can be done in about an hour. The chicken and cheese filling begs for red cabbage and sour cream, and makes the perfect outdoor bite. Ceviche is a simple, delicious standout in any culinary spread. It’s a breeze to make, particularly if you buy your shrimp already cooked, but the presentation is so elegant. Serve it in a hard shell or with a basket of salty tortilla chips. Of course, every backyard fiesta needs a basic beef taco. I like to eat mine with a mélange of white onion, cilantro and a squeeze of fresh lime. Complete the offerings with guacamole or smashed avocados. This season, keep it straightforward in the kitchen, so you can soak up every drop of these sweet sunny days.
