GOING PURPLE FOR PREVAIL
It’s as easy as picking a day in the month of October and wearing purple. Take a picture and share on social media using #gopurpleprevail. Companies – ask your employees to wear purple and pick a day when the whole company participates. • 72% of all murder-suicides involve an intimate partner; 94% of the victims of these murder-suicides are female. Prevail: Susan Ferguson (Executive Director) ; Esther Lakes (President of the Board), Michelle Corrao (Assistant Director); Tom Wood Noblesville: Mike Bragg (General Manager)
DONATE TO PREVAIL We are also asking individuals and companies to help Prevail and Hamilton County families affected by domestic violence and sexual abuse by donating some of the following items: • Grocery/Gas Cards (many women have no access to funds after fleeing their abuser)
• Spiral notebooks
• On average, nearly 20 people per minute are physically abused by an intimate partner in the U.S. During one year, this equates to more than 10 million women and men. • Nearly 1 in 3 women and 1 in 4 men are victims of intimate partner violence • Each year, 1 in 15 children are exposed to intimate partner violence, and 90% of these children are eyewitnesses to this violence
• Individually wrapped candy • Juice boxes • Tissue boxes
Drop off items at Tom Wood Volkswagen in Noblesville, located at 14701 Tom Wood Way.

FALL HAS ARRIVED: IT'S TIME TO GO PRO It’s the time of year when our schedules suddenly explode with appointments for laser treatments. After a spring and summer enjoying all things outdoorsy, it’s natural for many people to take a look in the mirror and be a bit dismayed at what they see. While there are tons of options to address sun damage and the conditions that result from it, the HALO Pro is the most aggressive and effective treatment from a nearly ‘all-inone’ perspective. HALO Pro is also the top choice of our patients who are on a maintenance program as it allows them to come in twice a year and still keep building on their results. HALO is the only hybrid laser on the market; it combines ablative (exfoliating) and non-ablative (regenerating) wavelengths to treat the skin from the outside and affect the deeper layers, where all of the long-term benefits begin. We combine the HALO with a BBL Photofacial to create the HALO Pro treatment – giving the patient the full-scale frontal attack on rough texture, large pores, fine lines and pigment problems (both red and brown spots and patches). Because we can treatment multiple areas with this protocol, many women opt to have their faces, necks and chests treated together, creating a dramatic result for those zones most exposed to the sun.
Make no mistake; this is a game-changing treatment and as with most advanced laser treatments, there will be a few days where you might not look your best. We can adjust the intensity of the treatment to meet your needs, and some individuals are ready to apply makeup in 24 hours while others may want to wait two to three days. A good rule of thumb is to choose a long weekend when you don’t have any events to attend. Email our aesthetic team to learn more about the
HALO Pro, and get ready for truly dramatic results.
Halo Pro is a laser procedure that can treat sun damage, acne scarring, and fine lines and wrinkles, as well as pigmentation issues like age spots, sun spots and melasma.

EDUCATED MEMOIR
SCALING MOUNTAINS Get lost in one woman’s pursuit of a proasic life.
In her best-selling memoir, “Educated”, published in 2018, author Tara Westover takes you through her life growing up in the mountains of Idaho. With no birth certificate, no doctor’s visits and no schooling, Westover takes the reader through her life growing up in a survivalist family where common luxuries – like an education or seatbelts – were dangerous examples of popularized culture. This novel is an inspiring, tear-jerking, incredible testament to faith and perseverance, and will have you rooting for Westover and her desire for a normal life, from the very first page.
THE VAN APFEL GIRLS ARE GONE MYSTERY THRILLER
Author Felicity McLean brings you this compelling and dark comedic mystery that follows main character Tikka in her search to uncover what happened during the long, hot, Australian summer of 1992. After her three friends, the Van Apfel sisters, go missing, Tikka returns home to Australia from Boston, and unpacks the mystery that has haunted her for years. With each passing chapter, you’ll be on the edge of your seat, trying desperately to piece the clues together and solve the case of the Van Apfel girls.
CITY OF GIRLS HISTORICAL FICTION
From “Eat, Pray, Love” author Elizabeth Gilbert, comes “City of Girls”, a hilarious, glittering and honest look at life in New York during the 1940s. Trail main character Vivian, as she moves to Manhattan to live with her Aunt Peg in her playhouse, The Lily. Throughout the book, Vivian finds herself in glory and in turmoil, from the end of the Great Depression, through World War II, and into her later years. These pages provide a show-stopping and sparkling depiction of life in New York City and the allure of the playhouse. By the end, you’ll be longing for a front row ticket to a performance of The Lily’s, “City of Girls”.
IT’S NOT SUPPOSED TO BE THIS WAY
CHRISTIAN / SELF-HELP Everyone, at one point or another, finds themselves lacking understanding and control of what’s going on around them. Author Lysa TerKeurst seeks to remedy that insecurity, and instead, offer the alternative – that disappointment can often lead to something much larger. For our readers who enjoy books that bring them closer to their faith, “It’s Not Supposed to Be This Way” conveys love, humor, hurt and divine intervention in a beautiful work about learning to let go, let God and keep on going.

By definition, upcycling – also known as creative reuse – is: “The process of transforming by-products, waste materials, useless or unwanted products into new materials or products of better quality and environmental value.” The concept certainly spoke to Kayla Wrin, a senior at Purdue University and Noblesville grad, who decided to upcycle old clothes into head-turning fashions. Her vision led to a creative, highly desirable and marketable small business. In July 2018, Kayla set up her sewing machine at her parents dining room table, paint brushes and piles of clothes in front of her, and decided to get to work. The artist credits her grandma’s influence and requests from friends for the success of her small business. Named “k.Jo Customs”, her work focuses on turning old threads – specifically flannels, jean jackets and worn t-shirts – into one-of-a-kind, eye-catching tailgate gear for game days. Kayla finds inspiration for her custom orders from upcycling tutorials on YouTube, and from the vintage clothing her customers pass on to her. In the

Starting next summer, Kayla hopes to open up a stand at the Noblesville Farmers Market and expand beyond her Boilermaker clientele.

STAYING FIT NEVER GETS OLD!
Styling by Laura Walters | Photography by Chris Whonsetler Makeup by Ashley Thompson, ProSoto Beauty Studio, Indianapolis
We adore denim – It's classic, comfortable and versatile. But, admittedly, sometimes donning these practical pants can get a little dull. We asked Style Riot’s Laura Walters to solve our denim dilemma and provide a fresh take on the basic blue go-to. She delivered, with three options that have us falling in love all over again.
Bar III Printed Blouse, $69; Free People Prairie Tunic Dress, $64; Levi's 311 Levin Shaping Skinny jeans, $29; Macy's, macys.com
Laura loves Levi’s! This pair has a slight high rise, which hugs all body shapes, and plays well with other denims.
22 kitindy.com
versatile
Whoever said you can’t wear denim on denim, never met this dress. To ease your outfit selection, opt for a versatile jean color. As a general rule, darker jeans go well with a lighter denim. Layer a print under those blue tones to bring out the wash and turn up the overall look.
A formal blouse added under this jacket lends an unexpected, dressier effect, while amaintaining a classic style.
From a white pump, a high-top sneaker, or a bootie, you can’t go wrong in pairing a white shoe with this sleek, casual style.
blue crush There are plenty of ways to elevate your boyfriend jeans from comfy to chic, like adding a military blazer. Laura recommends buying your boyfriend jeans two sizes bigger than your normal size (to achieve that baggy look), with a fun rip and a nice crop at the bottom. Bar III White Blouse, $69; Free People Boyfriend Denim, $98; Tommy Hilfiger Military Blazer, $169; Macy's, macys.com
Whether you opt for a confident pump, high-top sneaker or basic bootie, you can’t go wrong by pairing a white shoe with this casual look.

It's time to introduce your favorite pleated skirt to your go-to denim jacket. They're a match made in heaven! A deep tone, like the wine shown here, and leather add a desirable depth to the enemble. Layer over a button down blouse to dress up the look, or a fun t-shirt to keep things casual. Michael Kors Dorothy Fle Studded White Pump, $135; OAT Jean Jacket, $99; Levi's Pink T-shirt, $15; Calvin Klein Wine Leather Skirt, $130; Macy's, macys.com

As a business owner, you manage your employees, your professional finances, payroll and budgets, marketing, acquisition of new business, retention of continued business, and a myriad of other things from building deficiencies to hiring and firing staff and negotiating contracts. Routinely, the demands of your career, particularly as it becomes more successful, can steal you away from your MOST important business in life, your family. Families are about quality of time, discussions, appreciation for others, leading by example, and all those qualities which require patience and time. If you find yourself stumbling through a legal separation or divorce, take the time to momentarily reflect on your successes and attributes, focus on the list below and be prepared to hurl yourself out of the quagmire and into your next successful chapter in life.

BE PRESENT
cchalaw.com
Assess your daily involvement with the children as well as your awareness of the longer-term goals, strengths, interests and passions of each child. When you are caring for the children are you present, rested, pleasant and enjoyable? Or, are you tired, irritable, working, focused on a phone, computer, or the deadline next week? Are the children interrupting you? Or, have you put work aside and out of your mind, so it is not imposing on the time you are sharing with your children learning about or alongside them; and what makes them excited, afraid, cozy or proud?
BE AWARE
How many hours per week are you working? Have you calendared the activities of the children first so that work is secondary? How often do you travel and how long are you away? When you are travelling who primarily cares for the children? Is there a schedule or calendar that will reflect exactly how often you leave the children in the care of someone else or miss their events? Re-engage and sharpen your awareness of the household finances each month and yearly. Where are all the accounts, safety deposit boxes, wills, retirement assets? What are the monthly expenses as compared to the household income? Who is providing you with investment strategies? Is that person’s allegiance to you or your spouse? Are you able to login and access all accounts and obtain information or move funds? Be sure to note trends regarding monthly amounts and timing of payments. Should a spouse be inclined to try to funnel money, it is usually in smaller amounts frequently, so as to go unnoticed. By watching monthly trends of amounts, timing, and number of transactions in an account, unusual activity is easier to detect. October is an excellent time to “tune in.” Income taxes will be due if you are filing joint returns and requested an extension back in April. Even if you did not extend your income tax filing, October is ripe for household budgetary discussions and projections for next year which will require you to know all sources and amounts of income, including that available to fund retirement, and pay expenses and taxes.

OUTSOURCE TO REDUCE DEMANDS ON YOUR TIME:
What responsibilities do you take on that do not require your skills, talents, affections for your family, or YOU? Outsource those jobs to free up your time and enable you to spend more time focusing on your family first; and business second. Chores like house cleaning, landscaping, and tax preparation, are all very time consuming. With a little research or recommendations from friends or professionals, these chores can be completed by another. Design your days, weeks, and months with the same precision you used in designing your business plan; be intentional and deliberate about where, how and with whom you spend your time away from your business. Avoid the work calendar controlling you; shape your goals and schedule to deliver your time and attention to the dreams of your children. Presence, awareness and outsourcing will enable you to start the legal process from a position of strength; and from there forge your future and that of your family.
WOMEN WITH PURPOSE
THREE FEMALE ENTREPRENEURS EXHIBIT COURAGE, TENACITY AND SELFLESSNESS IN THEIR BUSINESSES By Brooke Reynolds
GAME-CHANGERS. PACESETTERS. GO-GETTERS. Each year, the Starkey Entrepreneurial Woman Award identifies females of this merit and honors them for their tireless efforts in the world of business. Because they deserve it. Marti Starkey, a lawyer and pioneering businesswoman herself, founded the prize in 1998 to recognize the heroic entrepreneurship of other women. Each year the award goes to an inspirational female business owner in Indianapolis. Kristen Luidhardt, president of The Prosper Group, a digital marketing business that specializes in political campaigns, is the 2019 award winner. Shawna Webster and Tiffany Sauder were runners-up. Here, Kit shares how these three inspiring women pushed past their fears to follow their dreams and what they learned along the way.

STARKEY ENTREPRENEURIAL WOMAN AWARD WINNER
KRISTEN LUIDHARDT PRESIDENT OF THE PROSPER GROUP As a wide-eyed 23-yearold with a Political Science degree, Kristen watched the 2004 presidential campaigns with great fervor. She was especially drawn to the grassroots power and mobilization used by Democrat Howard Dean’s team. Although she’s Republican, it inspired her to see how that campaign harnessed the power of the internet to get people involved. She was working on campaigns at the time and knew she wanted to start her own marketing firm but had fears that she wouldn’t be able to maintain clients year-round, as politics is generally seasonal work. With a whole lot of tenacity and the counsel of her mentor P. Eric Turner, a successful businessman and former Indiana Speaker Pro Tempore, she formed The Prosper Group in October 2006 at the age of 25. The company offered website design and development services, search engine optimization, blog creation and writing to political campaigners. Kristen evolved The Prosper Group in order to make enough profit to sustain the business throughout the year. In order to keep costs down, she drove instead of flying and sometimes even slept in her car. Time and time again, she had to win the business over someone better known and better connected — and she was usually the only female in the room. Marti Starkey (left) presents the Starkey Entrepreneurial Woman Award to Kristen Luidhardt.
In 2009, after signing three big political clients who won their campaigns in their states, The Prosper Group was on the map on a national scale, giving them a competitive edge with reputable firms in Washington, D.C. and other political hotspots. To date, The Prosper Group has served clients in 44 states and have worked for the Republican nominee for president twice, as well as others during the primary election process. They’ve been recognized for awards more than 40 times by prestigious organizations, such as the American Association of Political Consultants and Campaigns and Elections. In August, The Prosper Group was named one of the fastest growing private companies by Inc. magazine. Today, they employ 40 professionals, working in six states. Kristen says, regarding how far she's come as an entrepreneur, there are two things that bring her tremendous pride: “First, that I have had success as still the only woman-owned digital agency of scale on the Republican side, and one of very few womenowned political agencies, period,” she said. “Second, the decision to grow beyond Indiana has allowed me to bring what I've learned across the country back home.”
“THE DECISION TO GROW BEYOND INDIANA HAS ALSO ALLOWED ME TO BRING WHAT I LEARNED ACROSS THE COUNTRY BACK HOME.” KRISTEN LUIDHARDT

PRESIDENT OF ELEMENT THREE
CEO OF SEEDS OF LIFE HOME BASE SERVICES, LLC
Tiffany Sauder says she grew up in a “wildly entrepreneurial” home. They had a family business, and Tiffany’s dad was intentional about teaching his kids the value of showing up every day, not quitting until a job was completely finished, and about financial literacy.
Shawna Webster started out meandering down a career path that was not fulfilling her passion, but it lead her to where she is today.
TIFFANY SAUDER
When Tiffany was 24, she and her father purchased a small design consultancy and rebranded it, working tirelessly to turn it into a success. Now, 15 years in, Element Three is the largest marketing agency in Indiana. They’ve been on the Inc. 5000 list five years in a row and become the most creatively awarded agency in Indiana, winning more than 60 Addy awards (presented by the American Advertising Federation) in the past five years. Those accolades didn’t come without adversity. During the recession of 2008-2010, Element Three took quite a hit when almost all of their clients froze their spending. “I knew that in order to climb out of the hole we dug for ourselves, we couldn’t just go back to operating as usual,” Tiffany said. “We had to sell bigger deals if we were going to have the cash to pay back what we had to borrow to stay alive – and we had to differentiate ourselves from the pack of sameness.”
SHAWNA WEBSTER
As an officer at the Rockville Correctional Facility for Women, Shawna Webster often talked with the offenders about their children, and heard devastating stories about siblings being split up and displaced because of incarceration. Her heart was heavy for these kids, but she couldn't see much hope from her position inside the prison walls. Shawna decided to do something to make a difference. She left her job at the facility and began working for a foster care agency in Marion County, where she started out as a case manager and then became the program supervisor. In April 2008, Shawna started Seeds of Life Home Base Services, LLC. Her business licenses foster homes, places children and oversees those placements on behalf of the Department of Child Services. They also provide programs that teach foster caregivers how to care for the kids properly. Seeds of Life also recognized the need to support families when they’re separated, so they offer parent aid, counseling services and family visitation services. Business is growing, with a central office in Indianapolis and two family visitation centers – one in Indianapolis and one in Anderson, with further expansion on the horizon. Shawna is most proud of her humble beginnings as an entrepreneur, when she started out with a microwave stand from Goodwill as her desk. “I knew that, if I could be financially disciplined and carry out the sevices God placed on my heart, my latter days would be full of prosperity.”
Tiffany dove headfirst into sales training and personal coaching to learn how to create revenue quickly and fearlessly. She also made a marketing technology decision that streamlined the business and leveraged Element Three as experts on the matter. Their strategy worked. Tiffany now leads herself, her family and her employees at Element Three by the adage, “Write bold stories.” It’s an exclamation to push your personal limits to grow, learn and lead. “Running this company and leading this group of talented people is one of my life’s greatest joys. I’m better for the journey, and I hope and pray they are, too.”

EXPERT ADVICE Q+A
SKIN REMODELING FROM WITHIN
DR. JANET TURKLE DISHES ON THE SECRET TO ANTI-AGING
Q A
What is RF Microneedling?
Microneedling with radio frequency (RF) is the latest in anti-aging skincare technology to address the common signs of aging and sun damage, while remodeling your skin from within and restoring your youthful glow.
Q A
What is RF Microneedling used for?
RF Microneedling helps address fine lines and wrinkles, skin tightening, acne scars, stretch marks, pore size and overall texture, while building collagen and elastin.
Q A
What is the difference between traditional microneedling and RF microneedling?
Traditional Microneedling uses multiple, fine needles that create micro-injuries in the skin, stimulating the body’s own healing response to produce collagen and elastin. RF Microneedling adds the element of radio frequency to the traditional Microneedling procedure. This technology delivers energy deep into the dermis which heats the underlying layers of skin. This signals the production of collagen and elastin, resulting in the tightening of the skin over a period of time. With the combination of RF energy and the deeper delivery method, RF Microneedling can produce faster, more dramatic results than traditional microneedling.
Q A
What results can patients expect?
Results will vary from person to person and occur gradually over time. Most patients start to see improvement after their second treatment with final results seen about 3 to 6 months after the last treatment. With an at-home personalized skin care regimen and maintenance, you can enjoy your results for as long as possible. Results are greatly influenced by your lifestyle, sun exposure, diet, and the use of effective skin care products.
Q A
Turkle & Associates 11455 N. Meridian St., Suite 150, Carmel, IN For an appointment, call (317) 848-0001 TurkleMD.com
What does it feel like?
Most patients report feeling some heat and/ or a warm needle prick. After the application of a topical anesthetic, the procedure is very tolerable.
Q A
What is the downtime?
After the treatment, your skin will appear pink or “flushed,” which will lessen over the next few days following your treatment. Patients who need a more aggressive treatment may experience more pinkness or possible swelling. You can resume normal activities immediately after your treatment, but be cautious to stay out of the sun. RF Microneedling is safe and effective for all skin types, and requires little downtime.
STEP 1
STEP 2
STEP 3
The applicator is placed on the skin’s surface and micro-needles smoothly penetrate through the surface of the skin, creating small microchannels with uniform placement.
Delivered RF energy is released to the targeted areas through the tip of the micro-needles.
Collagen and elastin cells are gathered surrounding the needle insertion areas and new tissue regeneration and remodeling begins

EXPERT ADVICE
PREVENTING CANCER THINGS YOU CAN DO NOW Perspective
The news about cancer in the US today is mixed. We’ve made great strides over the past 50 years, and today the overall chance of surviving a cancer diagnosis is higher than ever before. That said, the fact remains that this year alone, an estimated 1.7 million Americans will be diagnosed with cancer, and over 600,000 will die of cancer. Clearly, the war against cancer is not over.
The Role of Genes is Small
Most people are aware that genetics and family history frequently play a significant role here, sometimes strongly affecting the likelihood of developing cancer. Inheriting specific abnormal forms the BRCA, hMLH, and/or HPC2 genes, for example, can increase a person’s risk of developing breast, colon, and/or prostate cancer, respectively. Still, while that’s true, the impact of genetics is actually quite small in the grand scheme of things.
Stephen P. Elliott, M.D. Living with Intention, INC 11979 Fishers Crossing Drive Fishers, IN 46038 317-863-5888 LivingWithIntention.biz
Lifestyle: The Choices We Make
The most significant factor influencing the likelihood of developing cancer is you and the choices you make every day. By now almost everyone knows that smoking, drinking to excess, too much sun exposure, and obesity all have an enormous impact on cancer risk far greater than any genetic inheritance. But there’s more to consider, too.
Diet
When it comes to diet, there’s more to it than just not overeating. It’s watching carbs in particular. Why? Because cancer loves sugar! Cancer cells are more active, more rapidly growing and dividing, than normal cells. And that means they require more energy. And what’s the best way to provide cancer cells with energy? That’s right: Sugar. Since cancer loves sugar, one of the most fundamental choices you can make is to minimize sugar. Beyond that, there are many foods like garlic, ginger, curcumin, green tea, and berries that contain a wide variety of potent cancer-preventing and cancerfighting phytonutrients. Emphasizing those foods can help, too.
Sleep
Sleep matters a lot, perhaps more than you might think. Why? Because minimizing the risk of cancer requires a healthy immune system, and a healthy immune system requires adequate sleep. The immune system rejuvenates and repairs itself during the restorative, restful hours of sleep.
Minimizing Toxins — Reading Labels
Nutrition Beyond Diet
Even the best of diets, however, may not be enough. Knowing and optimizing your levels of specific vitamins, minerals, and other nutrients can help prevent cancer as well. Optimizing Vitamin D, for example, can help prevent breast cancer, prostate cancer, and malignant melanoma. Vitamin C, too, can help, as can iodine, selenium, and certain forms of Vitamins B6, B9, B12, A, and E. That said, it’s not simple. The situation is complex. Nutrition is complex. Too much of a good thing can be a bad thing. When levels are too high, many vitamins become toxic. In other instances, the vitamins themselves are complex. Take Vitamin E for example. There are 8 different forms of Vitamin E. Some are helpful; others may actually be harmful. And Vitamins A, B6, B9, B12, and D all come in various forms as well. You have to be careful and know what you’re doing.
Reading food labels to avoid dangerous food additives can help, too. Being aware that thousands of skin care products contain cancer-promoting toxins and then avoiding or at least minimizing those products can also help.

makeup
As the temperatures and tones outside transition, so do our wardrobes, hair care and makeup routines. Autumn’s arrival – with its warm, spicy palettes and pots of caramel and coffee tints – provides the perfect excuse to play with new products and pigments, and perhaps even find a few new staples. Kit invited professional makeup artist and owner of Pro Soto Beauty Studios, Brenda Sotolongo, to pull together a collection of cosmetics from a range of retailers at a variety of price points. These recommendations promise to deliver radiant results, without breaking the bank.

DOCTORS TREAT BABY’S RARE BIRTH DEFECTS WITH PERSONALIZED MEDICINE — AND EMPATHY Pregnant with Clay, her third child, Sheena Schramski had by all accounts a normal pregnancy. Then during her 20-week check-up, Sheena and her husband were told that their baby had developed serious complications. During the ultrasound they saw Clay’s heart had shifted.
“The first visit is the one you remember the most,” said Sheena, who was relieved she had the support of Ascension St. Vincent care teams. “From the beginning I was never pushed aside or bulldozed over. The doctors always took the time to explain the plan and answer my questions.”
“The MFM team is part of an incredible network of people at Ascension St. Vincent. Our priority is to provide each family personalized care with empathy and compassion,” said Tovah Buikema, DO, FACOG. “We are here to offer guidance and support for moms-to-be who require more complex care.”
The care team determined that Clay would need to undergo a series of surgeries to correct the defects.
Sheena was referred to a maternal-fetal specialist at Ascension St. Vincent in Indianapolis. Doctors had determined that in addition to his heart complication, Clay’s lungs were only 65 percent developed and he had an omphalocele — a condition where the baby’s organs are outside his body.
“After his first surgery was successful, the doctor came into our room with a grin that I’ll never forget,” said Sheena. “Because I knew he wanted the same thing that I did. We both wanted to make Clay better.
During the entire time, Sheena knew that the care team was invested in her family. “After the surgery it was all about how we could get Clay to grow, how we could feed him, and how to make this work,” she said.
“His body was a puzzle and they had to figure out the best way to go about treating it,” said Sheena. “That first appointment was also the first time we could start to get our questions answered.”
Every pregnancy is different, but knowing that yours may be high-risk can add to an already emotional experience.
After 62 days in the hospital, the Schramskis were able to take their son home. Today, Clay enjoys playing soccer with his sisters, family camping trips, and is starting kindergarten.
Maternal-fetal medicine (MFM) specialists are OB/GYNs who have advanced training in managing high-risk pregnancies. They offer care to both moms and babies experiencing complications, including pre-existing health conditions; pregnancy-related complications; or diagnosed genetic conditions.
Ascension St. Vincent care teams get to know you as a woman and an expecting mom. Our trusted team of doctors, nurses, midwives and specialists deliver high-quality care for you and your baby based on your health and your preferences. CARE AND THE
CANCER CONNECTION By Lindahl Chase | Photos Leah Severson
Kim Heger has no family history of cancer. Her bloodwork was always normal, and her routine mammograms were just that - routine. She was not just healthy, she was a marathon runner. In August 2018, she was training to do the Indy Women’s Half Marathon with her 20-year-old daughter and planning an epic two-week trip to England with her family. Without warning, without even a lump, plans changed. An annual mammogram on August 9 led to a second mammogram, a biopsy and an official diagnosis on August 29. Breast cancer.
37
Kim was blindsided. She recalls making phone calls the day after her diagnosis, trying to fit treatment into her busy schedule filled with work, travel, family and friends. “The surgeon finally told me that I needed to accept that things were no longer in my control. That we need to deal with my diagnosis, and that might require a change of plans. All of the sudden, something else had taken control of my destiny." Kim underwent a bilateral mastectomy in September. They found another tumor, seven centimeters in diameter. The final pathology report revealed she would need both chemotherapy and radiation. “At first, it was no big deal, maybe a lumpectomy, maybe some radiation,” Kim said. “Week after week there was worse news and worse news.” In October, Kim began eight rounds of chemotherapy, took a month off treatment, and resumed another 33 rounds of radiation treatment in Houston, where she moved for six weeks. She returned to Indiana in May and almost exactly one year after her initial diagnosis, completed reconstructive surgery in August 2019.
A LOT CAN CHANGE IN A YEAR. For Kim, the past year has changed her perspective on wellness and the connection between the mind and body. She found yoga was a transformative and important part of her healing. Today, she is pursuing a certificate in nutrition and plans to be a health coach. The journey also provided an eye-opening glimpse at the barriers that so many women and families face while in cancer treatment. “I’m fortunate. I have help at home, a good job, insurance. But I still had to make sacrifices for my family. I couldn’t help but wonder how single parents do it. How can you be expected to just go along with your life?” Kim met Nancy Shepard, founder of Indiana Women in Need (IWIN) Foundation last September, as her treatment journey was getting underway, and was blown away by the organization. IWIN supports women and men across Indiana who are in treatment for breast cancer by paying for services that relieve emotional, physical and financial burdens. Nancy founded IWIN after her best friend and fellow surgical nurse was diagnosed with cancer at the age of 36.
"The surgeon finally told me that I needed to accept that things were no longer in my control. That we need to deal with my diagnosis and that might require a change of plans. All of the sudden, something else had taken control of my destiny"
“She is a sturdy, strong, capable woman,” Nancy said. “But she had small children and all of the sudden she couldn’t lift them up or take care of the home. And, by the way, you are immunocompromised because of chemo, but you work in an environment where you are exposed to germs. It really was overwhelming and hit home.” Nancy became committed to the cause and started figuring out how to help people gain control somewhere in their lives, when so much was not in their control. IWIN was born, and she quickly learned the two greatest needs were transportation and meals. “Transportation to and from treatment and appointments is a critical service, especially in rural parts of Indiana,” Nancy said. “That and meals. We are not only offsetting the financial responsibilities of putting food on the table, but alleviating the physical toll for someone who may be sick or tired from treatment or surgery.” Among other services, IWIN provides for housekeeping, childcare, lawn maintenance and medication assistance. Eligible recipients are an active part of the decisionmaking, choosing what will best help them, and when. “Whatever you think you need that keeps you in the game,” Nancy said.
Kim immediately recognized the critical resources that IWIN was providing. She and her husband put together a fundraiser for IWIN last year at Ironwood Golf Course, and are currently planning another for September 2019. “I remember giving Nancy a check for $2,000 last year, wishing it was more, and she was just so grateful,” Kim said. “She said, you have no idea how far this will go and how many people we can help with this.” She points out that just because chemotherapy and many other treatments are now outpatient does not mean that it is e,asy to walk out and drive yourself home after, much less head home to fix dinner. “I didn’t need the financial support or the ride to the hospital, but I finally surrendered and let people bring us meals,” she said. “I realized I needed to accept the help, and that what they were bringing was not just food, but love and comfort and support. This is what IWIN does for people.” For more information on IWIN and how you can contribute to their cause go to iwinfoundation.org.

Autumn – with its cool, but not-yet-frozen soil – is the ideal time to plant trees. Taking advantage of fall conditions grants the roots time to grow deep and strong, so that when summer rolls around again, they'll be able to support a stable trunk and sprawling branches, dripping in brilliant foliage. We invited the experts from Allisonville Nursery to share their recommendations for the best tree options, as well as tips for taking care of them over the winter.
THE RED BUD FLOWERING TREE
▢▢ This tree flourishes during early spring. Tiny magenta-colored buds swell into rosy pink flowers that linger for 2-3 weeks before the leaves take permanence for the summer.
▢▢ During the fall, the buds will turn a pretty canary yellow, which give way to tiny beanlike pods that remain on the tree into the winter months.
▢▢ You can plant this tree and expect it to thrive virtually anywhere, but, it needs to be watered regularly. Remember to groom and prune its branches to maintain its attractive flowering.

THE TULIP
FAST-GROWING SHADE TREE
▢▢ The tulip tree has buttery yellow cup-shaped flowers, with yellow eyes and orange centers that appear at the very top of the branches from mid-to-late spring. As seasons pass, the foliage transforms from beautiful emerald green to brilliant gold.
▢▢ This tree is far from lowmaintenance. It demands care and attention, and requires full sunlight. After planting, keep an eye out for insects and disease.
ORNAMENTAL QUICK FIRE® HYDRANGEA EARLY BLOOMER
▢▢ This beautiful tree blooms a full month ahead of other panicle hydrangeas, extending the bloom time and beauty from early summer through autumn. The flowers transition from white to pink and then to red, throughout the four seasons.
▢▢ This tree can be planted in both full sun and full shade, and can grow in most average-to-moist conditions. Just don’t let it dry out.
IMPERIAL HONEYLOCUST DEEP-ROOTED
▢▢ This tree is a favorite for shade seekers, with its tendency to grow and spread broadly. It boasts a high tolerance for different growing conditions and beautiful colors, making it a prime pick for your front yard. ▢▢ The Honeylocust should only be grown in full sunlight. It can adapt to most dry and moist conditions, and will do just fine under average home landscape conditions. It's relatively low-maintenance, and best pruned in late winter following the extreme cold. ▢▢ The honeylocust is known for having deep roots that stay well below the surface.
GREEN GIANT ARBORVITAE BARRIER BUILDER
▢▢ This tree is the perfect solution for privacy or wind screening, and is resilient in any type of season.
▢▢ The foliage is very green, and remains green throughout every season. It’s not known for flowers or fruit, but its shaggy brown bark adds an interesting dimension to the landscape. ▢▢ Applying thick mulch around the root zone in the winter can help protect it in exposed locations or colder microclimates.

CORYDON T TRAVEL
KIT
When it comes to history, Corydon packs a punch. Founded in 1808, it served as Indiana’s first state capitol. Today, this historic hideaway is home to refined restaurants and art extravaganzas. For couples wanting a weekend getaway, look no further than Corydon’s charming downtown and quaint bedand-breakfast.
WHAT TO DO For a firsthand demonstration of offhand glassmaking, visit Zimmerman Art Glass. (It’s a family business representing five generations of glass blowers.) On October 18-19, they’re hosting the Zimmerman Glasstoberfest. This annual celebration includes live music, a beer garden, German food, and live glassmaking demonstrations. Since the festival is free to attend, consider picking up a unique piece to commemorate your romantic weekend. If you’re traveling in late October, though, head to the Corydon Extravaganza. This two-day festival will be held October 26-27 and will feature all things rusty, dusty, timeless, and quirky. With more than 200 vendors at this indoor/ outdoor, rain-or-shine event, you’re bound to pick up something. That same weekend, you and your significant other can join the Corydon Capitol State Historic Site for the Real Haunted Happenings Ghost Tour. It’s one-part history lesson, one-part ghost story, and three-parts fun. Tickets are $15 per person, and tours are October 26, at 8 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. For a more romantic, relaxing experience, head to All About You Massage and Day Spa for a couples massage. 46 kitindy.com
Southern fusion style restaurant, 1816 Modern Kitchen & Drinks will take your dining experience to the next level.
WHERE TO EAT For craft cocktails and refined comfort food, get a reservation for two at 1816 Modern Kitchen & Drinks. Scott Dickenson – who has trained with Dallas McGarity, a Food Network “Chopped” champion – is the chef behind this new restaurant. His “southern fusion” style includes fried green tomatoes and shrimp and grits. There are some twists, though – ramen even makes an appearance on the menu. Table for two, please!
WHERE TO SLEEP When it comes to accommodations, Corydon has it all: hotels, a bed-and-breakfast, cabins, campgrounds. We recommend heading downtown, to the Kintner
House Inn. Rooms at this romantic bed-and-breakfast start at $79. Plus, you won’t need your car once you arrive; all of Corydon’s historic hotspots are within walking distance.
LOOKING FOR MORE? Southern Indiana boasts miles of caves and caverns, so check out the Indiana Cave Trail. You also can visit the Corydon Capitol State Historic Sites or enjoy award-winning wines at Best Vineyards Winery & Distillery. For more ideas, visit thisisindiana.org/fall.

PARKE COUNTY
September and October are peak months for Parke County. As soon as the leaves start turning, camp sites fill up. This rural county isn’t just known for its fall foliage, though. It’s also home to the annual Covered Bridge Festival.
TRAVEL
KIT
If you've never been to the Covered Bridge Festival, you're missing out. The sights, tastes and shopping are well worth the trip.
48 kitindy.com
WHAT TO DO There are 31 covered bridges in Parke County, earning it the nickname “Covered Bridge Capital of the World.” To showcase these historic structures, the county puts on a 10-day Covered Bridge Festival each October. This year, the festival takes place October 11-20, with nine communities each
adding their special spin on the event. Rockville will have wood carving demonstrations, for example, while Montezuma will have crullers. The mills and crafts at Bridgeton and Mansfield are also very popular with visitors.
If you're planning a visit, don't miss the Parke County Covered Bridges & Wallace Garage Model T Tour. From September 28 to October 2, Model Ts will be touring Parke County. Hang around Rockville, and you might just see one! Following the Model T tour, the Newport Antique Auto Hill Climb offers something for everyone. This three-day event will be held October 4-6 and features a gospel music jamboree, flea market, parade and fireworks show.
WHERE TO EAT The tenderloin at ThirtySix Saloon costs $5, which leaves a generous budget for the sensational sides. While you’re waiting for your food, check out the game room and throw some darts. You can also hang your hat at the Hog Pit, the seasonal outdoor deck and bar. Both establishments are family-friendly, as is Narrows Restaurant in Turkey Run State Park. This cozy restaurant offers breakfast, lunch and dinner, and even dishes up lunches to-go for those out on the trails.
WHERE TO SLEEP Turkey Run Inn is the largest facility in Parke County, with 61 rooms. (Turkey Run Inn also operates various cabins and cabin rooms.) But for every person who stays in a hotel room, there are 20 people who camp. Peak season means 20,000 campers a night, so reserve a site sooner rather than later. Really, there’s no wrong place to stay. You can pitch a tent at Racoon Lake State Recreation Area, Rockville Lake Park, Shades State Park or Turkey Run State Park and be immersed in the fall foliage.
LOOKING FOR MORE? There are plenty of familyfriendly outdoor adventures in Parke County. Hike through Turkey Run State Park or Shades Park, float down Sugar Valley Creek or rent a boat at Racoon Lake. For more ideas, visit coveredbridges.com.

WHAT TO DO
WHERE TO EAT
Since its launch in 2016, Exhibit Columbus has been the city’s standout autumn event. This year, the annual exploration of art, architecture, design and community features 18 outdoor installations. The installations are scattered about downtown – giving you and your crew means to explore some of the city’s most iconic sites. Afterward, take an in-depth architecture tour. The Miller House and Garden tour is enchanting, but if you’re more into history than mid-century modern design, check out the Inn at Irwin Gardens or Zaharakos Ice Cream Parlor tours. Tours tend to sell out, so book a ticket in advance. (Adult tickets are $12-$25, depending on the tour.)
Henry Social Club (HSC) has been serving up small plates, large plates and homemade breads since 2014. Their cocktails are a thing of beauty, too. But if you're more of a “wine person”, don’t worry. HSC has a world-class selection. Upland Brewing Co.’s Columbus location is also a landmark in both design and experience. Located in a historic 1903 pump house, Upland offers some of Indiana’s best craft beer.
On October 11-12, add Columbus’ annual street festival celebrating the community’s cultural diversity to your agenda. The two-day, family-friendly event features art, international music and dance performances, and craft demonstrations from the host county. (India is the host for 2019.) There’s also the Déjà Vu Art & Fine Craft Show later this fall. This annual show is held at the Commons and features art made from upcycled or recycled materials. In the hands of professionals, these materials are transformed into beautiful works of art.
WHERE TO SLEEP The best thing about staying in downtown Columbus? You won’t need to use your car once you arrive. Amenities and attractions are within walking distance of both the Inn at Irwin Gardens and Hotel Indigo. (The former is a bed-and-breakfast in which the renowned Irwin family used to live.)
LOOKING FOR MORE? If your trip to Columbus is a family outing, be sure to take the kids to the playground at the Commons and check out kidscommons, a three-story children’s museum located right across the street. If design is what you crave, hop on a bikeshare and savor a tour of some of the world’s best architecture.

ONE NOBLESVILLE RESIDENT HAS US FALLING HARD FOR HER BREEZY, SMART STYLE
Story by Brooke Reynolds | Photos by Chris Whonsetler
H HOME
KIT
When Carla, an avid Kit reader, wrote to us recently to rave about a local interior decorator, we listened. “Shannon does marvelous transformations. Please consider her for your magazine,” she wrote. You don’t have to ask us twice, Carla! Noblesville resident Shannon Sorells exercises her creativity as a Marketing Manager for Buckingham Companies, a commercial real estate and property management firm. Shannon focuses on the aesthetic components of their communities, ranging from interior and graphic design, to branding and photography.
But her true passion is bringing beauty and happiness into individuals' homes, which is why she started her side business, Styled by Sorrells (IG: @styledbystorrells). Shannon's designs have been featured by House Beautiful, Pottery Barn, Home Bunch, Wayfair, Sherwin Williams and Becki Owens Design, among others. When it comes to getting started, Shannon follows a basic formula. “I love a neutral and timeless palette as a foundation for design, both within my own home and the projects I work on,” Shannon said. “By starting with a simplified base, you can adjust your design or change your style simply by swapping a few pillows and accessories and adding interest through texture and wood tones.” Shannon and her husband, Chris, had their eye on their current home – which she affectionately dubbed “a diamond in the rough” – in the Pebble Brook Subdivision in Noblesville. It had been on the market for a while and had a timeless, stately appeal. Once Shannon, Chris and their two children moved in, Shannon began digging in to the interior renovations. She opted for a white backdrop for a classic beauty she could dress up with accessories and transform seasonally through thoughtful touches.

LAUNDRY ROOM »»»
ROOM REDEFINED
The laundry room was once a bedroom. Because you had to walk through both the master bedroom and master bath to get to it, it made perfect sense to transform it into a laundry room. The Sorrells put in new premium plywood floors and repurposed an old entertainment center for a folding table and shelves.
A PATTERNED PATH
Recreate these plywood floors by having a home improvement store cut the plywood in 6”x32” strips. Hand-sand each strip, including the corners. Use construction adhesive and pneumatic nails to create a herringbone pattern. Then apply stain and polyurethane.
56 kitindy.com
AND NOW FOR THE ENTERTAINMENT
The folding table and shelves are reclaimed pieces from an old entertainment center. The folding table is what the TV used to sit on, and the shelves flanking the washer and dryer are from the storage sides of the unit. Shannon added paper behind the glass to hide laundry detergent and colorful beach towels.
THINK THRIFTY
Shannon repurposed an old bathroom vanity for the desk area, and the chandeliers are from Habitat for Humanity Restore. The chairs are from Goodwill and Facebook Marketplace.
KITCHEN
»»»
WARM WELCOME
The wood tones and brick achieve interest and warmth in the kitchen and dining room. The brick floors add texture and — bonus! — hide every imperfection.
CABINETS FOR SAFE KEEPING
Shannon added floor-toceiling cabinets to match some of the woodwork that was already in the home. The cabinetry is the perfect place to store and organize all of her seasonal decor.
WINE DOWN
The Sorrells save all of their wine corks, and on special occasions, they mark the date and reason for the celebration.
57
DINING AREAS »»» BEAUTY OF STORAGE
The beautiful woodwork is actually hidden storage. It's a great spot to store items you don't use every day— like seasonal decor. In a couple months, Shannon will swap out the white pumpkins for the evergreens and classic Christmas plaid.
DELIGHT IN THE DETAILS
“I chose wicker chairs for our breakfast nook and textured pillows for the living area to incorporate more texture with subtlety,” Shannon said. “I love being able to add color for the seasons, if I so choose, without negatively affecting the overall design.” We love the charming details.

Charcuterie TO SHARE One of my younger sisters somehow instinctively knew how to easily put together beautiful and balanced cheese trays, and yes they were stunning. Prior to my working at the cheese counter at Whole Foods, I didn’t have a clue about what cheeses to get, let alone accomniants. A niece of mine just recently did a massive board—so large that she had to use a cookie sheet— but you can use a simple plate or platter. I noticed that the items placed on my niece’s board were well-chosen in that she knew and loved them all. Like my sister, she knew the rules, and rule number one is do your own thing. Make yours special in your own way. Take the time to learn about the about the cheeses. I have put together a little information about where to start; not guidelines, but “sure things” in regard to pairings and variety. It’s nice to share with a crowd because you can include more variety, but a nicelydone board can be done for two. Meat and cheese boards, or charcuterie, have been on-trend for a while and it’s not just because they are KETO-friendly. It’s because this dish invites sharing. Plan ahead and go to a local market, or visit a cheese shop or grocery that has a substantial cheese section. Murrays in Kroger and Whole Foods are my usual favorites. Feel free to ask for help! The cheesemonger behind the counter most likely knows about the product, which hopefully you can sample. I worked behind the cheese counter at Whole Foods for years, and collaborating with the customers was a pleasure. It was a joy learning about cheeses, the history of them and the classic pairings, as well as working with some truly gifted chefs that always pushed one’s taste-buds. One more hen possible, have your cheese freshly cut. When I plan a board, all sorts of ideas get into my head. Not just color, taste, and texture, I like to think about the origin, and the style of cheese. Representing local is a must, and we have plenty of award winning local cheeses that deserve some bragging rights.

FRESH CHEESES Feta, fresh mozzarella and fresh chèvre are great on their own, and, like most cheeses, they pair beautifully with sweet or savory. (Pro tip: For a charcuterie board, it’s best to have cheeses that are easy to pick up with your hands.)
05
You will need at least one Brie-stye or triple-cream bloomy rind cheese. Trillium by Tulip Tree is a crowdpleaser. I also recommend Delice de Bourgogne, St. Angel, Saint-André, Camembert or La Tur. These are all lucious cheeses.
07
09 10
I enjoy playing with different ages and styles. Emmental and swiss are great, but my heart belongs to caveaged Gruyère. Piave has a subtle, yet complex flavor. I love the nuttiness of an aged Gouda, and the fact it gets firmer and saltier as it ages. Sheep or goat’s milk Gouda hold their own to cow’s milk in this category. I typically opt for Euphoria, Parano (sheep’s milk), Robusto or uniekaas. If you enjoy fruit or veggies in your cheese, try Cotswold or English cheese with green onions, or a Wensleydale with cranberries or blueberries. These are also very visually pleasing. Most people have a very strong opinion, for or against, blue cheese. I like to put a “gateway” blue on my board, such as Cambozola (a camembert-gorgonzola blend) or Saint Agur, a nice creamy, toned down cheese paste.
11
ACCOMPANIMENTS
CHARCUTERIE
Crusty baguettes and crackers are paramount for a perfect plate.
We have some great local shops. But if you can’t make it to Smoking Goose or Turchetti’s for your cured meats, don’t panic. These local favorites have excellent distribution, so you can usually find their products in a market nearby.
Nuts, (I prefer marcona almonds), go with almost any cheese. And there are so many options. Pickled or cured items, like cornichons (picked cucumbers) and spicy carrot sticks offer a nice flavor profile, and I have to have fresh olives from the specialty department.
A coated rind cheese often adds color, texture and flavor. Rosemary or espresso-rubbed varieties are some of my favorites. Always look for a special or limited release cheese. You can usually find small cuts of cheeses if you are on a budget or want to try something new without a full commitment.
FRUITS Fresh fruit is lovely when it’s in season, but dried varieties offer a nice alternative. Fig spread, especially the chilli fig I used for this board and sour cherry, is a favorite of mine.
