NOW IS THE TIME TO TRANSFORM YOUR FAVORITE SPACES.

Upgrade your ride for the new year. I was born and raised right here in Noblesville. I grew up in a home without domestic violence or assault – it wasn’t something I saw, or even heard about. But when I was introduced to Prevail of Central Indiana, I was shocked by the number of individuals who are affected by domestic violence. In 2018 alone, Prevail helped more than 4,000 clients in Hamilton County. (Nearly 80 percent of clients are women and children.) Domestic violence and abuse are hard topics to discuss, so you don’t often hear about them. But at Tom Wood Volkswagen in Noblesville, we’re breaking the taboo and raising awareness for Prevail, an organization that helps families in Hamilton County. – Mike Bragg, GM of Tom Wood Volkswagen in Noblesville

The Volkswagen Tiguan. Take a closer look... Car-Net Remote Access services are free for the first five years and includes various ways of interacting with a Volkswagen vehicle from a distance. For example, drivers can unlock or lock their vehicle or start up their vehicle from a distance using the mobile app.

View a remote vehicle status display to check their vehicle’s fuel level, mileage, and door and window statuses. These services are free of charge for the first five years, and you can continue the services after that if desired.

To help Hamilton County families affected by domestic violence and sexual abuse, you can donate the following items: • Art supplies (for children to journal and express their emotions)

• Bottled water (8 oz. bottles, preferably) • Individually packaged snacks • Gas cards (many women have no access to funds after fleeing their abuser)

Some of Indiana’s finest nature hikes are in Parke County, so it’s fitting that the area also hosts an entire fair devoted to one of their native trees’ most revered flowing crops: maple syrup. If you, like so many, dream of drizzling the amber goodness on your breakfast plate, you won’t want to miss the annual Parke County Maple Fair, February 29 – March 8. The event began in 1964 as a way to highlight local maple syrup producers. The fair is a celebration of the end of winter, when area farmers are collecting sugar water from the trees, an important step in the syrup producing process. The Maple Fair is held at the Parke County 4-H Fairgrounds in Rockville. Each day, from 8 a.m. – 4 p.m., guests are invited to indulge in a hot stack of pancakes slathered in the finest local maple syrup. An array of maple-made goods, including cookies, candies and, of course, syrup, are available for purchase. The Covered Bridge Art Association lines the walls with one-of-a-kind paintings, and area artisans and crafters are on hand offering unique pieces for your home.

Let your curiosity take you on an adventure with turn-by-turn directions to nearby sugar camps. Once there, you can take a tour and see the syrup being made.

Many of us have big fitness aspirations around the first of the year, but a few months in, our motivation dwindles. If you’re looking to recharge your resolutions, a sharp new outfit might just be the perfect jumpstart. We asked Brandii Wilson, an avid runner and barre instructor at B Present Studio in Fishers, to share her goto gear. She offered us four of her favorite brands that help women stay active without blowing their budgets.

REFLEX BY 90 DEGREES

WHAT TO TRY: THEIR PANTS These leggings come in several styles and colors, and are so comfortable they’ve been compared to lululemon yoga pants. I love the high-waist compression options, which are key for any high impact workout, like running, boxing, bootcamps, etc. Sizing is also pretty consistent, which makes it easy to order online. Available at TJ Maxx and Amazon

DSG 1

WHAT TO TRY: PANTS, SHIRTS, BRAS

These pieces hold up through the toughest workouts. Similar color schemes make it easy to mix and match and come up with several different outfit combinations. The price point is very reasonable, too. I highly recommend the sports bras and fleecelined yoga pants for running outside in colder temperatures. Available at Dick’s Sporting Goods

C9

WHAT TO TRY: ALL CLOTHES These pieces are similar to Athleta® or lululemon, but a fraction of the cost. They work great for both low impact and high impact workouts, depending on the style. Several of the pieces I have had held up even through 4-5 workouts a week. I’ve been known to wear them when running errands as well. 7

1 DSG Seamless Racerback Sports Bra, $18; 2 Calia Support Bra, $30; 3 DSG Fit Tank, $17; 4 DSG Women’s Performance Tights, $20; 5 DSG Puffer Tote, $26; 6 Calia by Carrie Underwood Leggings, $55; 7 Calia Womens Long-Sleeve Mesh Panel, $45, all available at Dick’s Sporting Goods

TRY THEM OUT!

Put these threads to work at a barre class at B Present Studio in Fishers! bpresentstudios.com

This is the highest price point of the bunch, but so worth it. The colors and styles are so pretty and flattering on all body types. You can find outfits great for both lower impact workouts such as yoga or pilates, and higher impact workouts like running or group cardio classes. I love the shirts with motivational quotes. They keep me moving through my toughest workouts. Available at Dick’s Sporting Goods

EXPERT ADVICE

HEART HEALTH:

CHOLESTEROL IS NOT THE ENEMY I’ll admit it: Whenever I see a conventional lipid panel these days, I really don’t know what to make of it. That’s not a bad thing, actually. Why? Because a conventional lipid panel really doesn’t tell me, or anyone, anything. At least not anymore, it doesn’t. You know the test I’m referring to: Total cholesterol, LDL, HDL, and triglycerides.

Old School: The Conventional Wisdom “Myth”

Here’s what we’ve always heard: (a) that Cholesterol is bad for us, (b) that LDL cholesterol is REALLY bad for us, (c) that HDL is the protective, “Good Guy,” and (d) that triglycerides are, well… just kinda bad, though not as bad as LDL. For many years, this interpretation represented the best, most sophisticated understanding available regarding lipids and the role they play in heart disease.

New School: What the Science Really Says

The problem with this “Old School” interpretation is this: Today we know better. Today we know more, far more than we used to. Frustratingly, while our understanding of lipid metabolism (i.e., cholesterol) has changed dramatically over the past many years, this new information has been largely ignored by conventional medicine. Here’s a small sampling of what we’ve learned: » Not all LDL is bad. Some, perhaps even most, is actually beneficial. It’s only a particular kind of LDL (small, dense, oxidized LDL) that can cause problems. » Not all HDL is good. It’s only the larger, more buoyant HDL particles that protect. » In fact, cholesterol in general is not the enemy. It’s not some space-age, alien molecule invading out bodies and clogging up our arteries. Just the opposite, in fact. Cholesterol is an essential part of every cell in the body. It’s absolutely crucial for optimal brain health. And without cholesterol, we simply can’t make important hormones like progesterone, estrogen, testosterone, and cortisol.

On Beyond Cholesterol

What’s more, there’s a very strong, and rapidly growing, mountain of evidence that suggests that the real problem underlying heart disease isn’t cholesterol at all, but rather inflammation. And the conventional lipid panel tells us absolutely nothing about inflammation. Nothing at all.

Stephen P. Elliott, M.D. Living with Intention, INC 11979 Fishers Crossing Drive Fishers, IN 46038 317-863-5888 LivingWithIntention.biz

Fortunately, a growing number of labs are now offering tests that measure and report (a) a more detailed assessment of cholesterol in a way that really matters, and (b) an array of important inflammatory markers, like Myeloperoxidase, LpPLA2, oxLDL, and hs-CRP.

Resolve to be Informed

If you’re among the millions of Americans who, once again this year, have resolved to get serious about their health, then start by resolving to be informed. If you have a family history of heart disease, or if you have other known cardiovascular risk factors like smoking, diabetes, hypertension, etc., then ask your doctor to help you dig deeper and order a more comprehensive cardiovascular risk assessment. Don’t settle for “Old School” when it comes to your health. You know better now.

Story by Brooke Reynolds + Photos by Chris Whonsetler

Back in the mid-90s, sitcoms like "Friends" and "Seinfeld" popularized coffeehouse hangouts. That’s when Noble Coffee & Tea Company, in the heart of downtown Noblesville, opened its doors — 1996, to be exact — and it’s been a thriving business ever since.

This spring, Noble Coffee & Tea will add another beverage category to its repertoire: cocktails! The new offerings will involve adding boozy goodness to their coffee and teas, and introducing fresh libations by season. We asked co-owners Mark and Robyn Littler to give us a tempting taste of what's to come. Keep your eyes on the Noble Coffee and Tea Company, Ltd. Facebook page for updates on the availability of their caffeinated cocktails and, in the meantime, try whipping up these toasty recipes at home.

Caribbean Coffee

We trade the whisky in a traditional Irish Coffee for a locally produced rum that is sure to conjure up memories of vacation at the beach.

11/2 ounces Hard Truth Toasted Coconut Rum 2 teaspoons raw sugar 8 ounces Noble Coffee Rio Blend Whipped cream, to taste 1| Combine the rum and sugar in a traditional Irish coffee mug. Add the coffee and stir to dissolve the sugar. Top with whipped cream.

The Littlers take pride in roasting all the beans for their coffee each week in a roaster right next to the shop. Mark says they put a lot of care into offering organic, fair-tradesourced coffee, and they even support local and global charities with their beans.

SIP AND SUPPORT: Proceeds from the Full Throttle blend benefit the restoration of the Nickel Plate Express 426 locomotive.

Charitable coffee lovers will appreciate that proceeds from the cafe's Full Throttle blend support the restoration of the Nickel Plate Express 426 locomotive. The full-bodied, wellbalanced cup of joe has notes of caramel, peanut and baker's chocolate, with a smooth, creamy finish. What’s not to love?

The Littlers shared that they will soon offer home-brewing classes as well as open roasting times, when you can buy beans in bulk right out of the roaster. The shop also hosts special events such as a kids’ barista experience, complete with a hot chocolate spread on their training bar, ideal for a birthday party or group scout outing.

Hot Toddy A traditional toddy uses black tea with honey, lemon and rum/whisky. With ours, we can use any of our teas, but I would suggest giving the one featured here a try. A toddy is a great drink to soothe a winter cold. The cinnamon offers the right amount of spice to make you breathe easier, and the sweetness of the flora soothes a sore throat. Our English breakfast tea has great body and depth without the astringency you may get with lower-quality teas.

1 ounce Hard Truth Cinnamon Vodka 1 /2 ounce Cardinal Spirits Flora 8 ounces hot English breakfast tea Cinnamon stick, to garnish Sprig of mint, to garnish Honey, to taste 1| Combine vodka, flora and tea in your favorite mug and wait 4-5 minutes for the tea to steep. Garnish with a cinnamon stick and a sprig of mint. Add honey, to taste.

Brain surgery saves girl’s life — twice “It was the day after Valentine’s. I thought she had the flu or had eaten too much at her school party. I didn’t know she was throwing up blood.” Maribel Ham called an ambulance for her 6-year-old daughter, Elsa. It wasn’t the flu. It was much more serious. At the ER, a CT scan showed bleeding near the part of the brain that controls movement. Elsa was airlifted to Peyton Manning Children’s Hospital at Ascension St. Vincent. Waiting was a pediatric neurosurgery team led by Jodi Smith, MD, an accomplished specialist who had recently joined the hospital. On arrival, Elsa was unresponsive. “It was so scary,” said Maribel. “But they treated us like family. They let me know that my daughter was in good hands.” Dr. Smith removed the right half of Elsa’s skull to relieve the pressure from the bleed. When Elsa woke up, she showed immediate improvement. But the day after, a follow-up MRI scan revealed a brain tumor as the cause of the bleed. Dr. Smith did a second surgery six days later to remove the tumor and replace the skull bone that had been removed. “It was heartbreaking. I was praying and crying,” said Maribel.

Maribel Ham. left, found lifesaving care for her daughter, Elsa, at Peyton Manning Children’s Hospital.

“Dr. Smith said the bleeding in Elsa’s brain helped the doctors discover the tumor.” The pediatric neurosurgery team was able to take out the bleed and nearly all of the tumor. “It’s a miracle that she survived,” said Dr. Smith. “Elsa is doing remarkably well. She’s made great strides in regaining her strength and movement.” Elsa recovered at Peyton Manning for three weeks. Maribel also had Elsa’s two sisters — 14 years and 7 weeks old — with her. What helped her through those tough days: the supportive nurses, child life specialists and chaplain. “One night, everything piled up on me,” recalled Maribel. “A nurse sat down and just listened to me.

It takes a special person to do her job, taking care of both the kids — and their parents.” As a result of her condition, Elsa experiences some lingering weakness, so she continues to work hard in physical and occupational therapy. She also began chemotherapy under the direction of Jessica Goodman, MD, to help prevent the tumor from growing again. “She’s very resilient,” said Maribel. “Even when it hurts, she says, ‘I’m fighting it, Mom.’” Elsa’s keeping up with her firstgrade schoolwork, going to school when she has the energy. Her main goal: This little fashionista wants to play dress-up again.

HEART OF THE MATTER

WOMEN & HEART HEALTH

WHAT IS A HEART ATTACK? WHAT IS A STROKE?

February is often associated with roses, chocolate, and stuffed animals. But the heart-filled month is about more than traditional valentines – it’s also American Heart Month. This federally designated month can be traced to 1963, when President Lyndon B. Johnson established it under presidential proclamation. In his remarks announcing the first American Heart Month, President Johnson urged Americans to “give heed to the nationwide problem of the heart and blood-vessel diseases, and to support the programs required to bring about its solution.” Almost 60 years later, American Heart Month continues to raise awareness about cardiovascular diseases and the importance of living a hearthealthy life. Although American Heart Month is confined to the shortest month of the year, heart disease knows no borders. In the United States, it is the No. 1 cause of death for both women and men. And while heart attacks and strokes pose the same dangers for both sexes, women are less likely to act upon their symptoms. That’s because women are prone to experiencing “silent symptoms” like shortness of breath, sweating, nausea, or back pain. There’s also a misconception that heart disease is a “man’s disease.” In truth, strokes, heart attacks, and other cardiovascular disease are the No. 1 killer of Hoosier women. Each day, 23 Indiana women die from heart disease. So, how can women identify their symptoms, or recognize when they are having a heart attack or stroke?

22 kitindy.com

Heart attacks occur when a coronary artery – which supplies blood to the heart muscle – becomes blocked and blood flow stops or is severely restricted. So, what causes the blockage? Blood clots and plaque buildup. When they block the flow of oxygenated blood to the heart, the muscle begins to die. A stroke is similar in nature but affects the blood vessels in the brain instead of the heart. (A “brain attack,” in other words.) A stroke can occur when the carotid artery – which supplies blood to the brain – becomes blocked. This type of blockage can be caused by either a blood clot or a plaque buildup. Strokes can also occur when a blood vessel in the brain ruptures or leaks blood into surrounding tissue.

This is often caused by high blood pressure, which strains the walls of arteries. In short, heart attacks and strokes are both caused by blocked blood vessels or restricted blood flow. But while the nature of these two health risks are similar, there are some differences in the symptoms.

HOW TO TELL IF IT'S A HEART ATTACK Each day, 23 Indiana women die from heart disease.

In men, heart attacks are generally the result of a sudden rupture in the coronary artery. Women, however, are more likely to have smaller, less fatal heart attacks. Instead of bursting, plaque is more likely to erode into the blood vessel wall – especially in younger women. As such, women are more likely to have heart attacks with no overt symptoms. This includes shortness of breath, sweating, fatigue, nausea, or dizziness. However, many women do experience classic symptoms: pain, pressure, discomfort, or a squeezing fullness felt in the chest, neck, jaw, shoulders, arms, or back. If any of these symptoms last more than a few minutes – or go away and come back – call 911 or get to the hospital. Every heart attack is different, so don’t ignore the signs (even if it’s “just” cold sweating, lightheadedness, or a slight tightness in the chest).

HOW TO TELL IF IT'S A STROKE In younger women, naturally occurring hormones play somewhat of a protective role. However, the risk of having a stroke increases after menopause, due to hormones, reproductive health, pregnancy, and childbirth. As such, women are more likely than men to experience a stroke. Because a stroke affects the brain, it’s important to think FAST (Face, Arms, Speech, Time). Smile – does one side of the face droop? Next, raise both arms. Does one arm drift downward? Check for slurring, too, and ask for a sentence to be repeated. Remember that time is of the essence, so if any of these symptoms are present, call an ambulance. It’s best to go to the hospital even if only one symptom is present.

WHAT WOMEN SHOULD BE AWARE OF Women face unique challenges when it comes to heart health. Pregnancy, for example, serves as somewhat of a stress test for the cardiovascular system. If there is a history of preeclampsia or eclampsia, the risk of having a heart attack or stroke in the next five to 15 years doubles. Birth control is not without risks, either. Oral contraceptives can also increase blood pressure. Women who experience migraine headaches with aura also have a greater likelihood of suffering a stroke. And while men and women can have the same discomfort during a coronary blockage, women are generally older than men when they have their first heart attack.

As American Heart Month reminds us, heart attacks can happen to anyone at any time, regardless of age or sex. So learn the symptoms and don’t be afraid to trust your instincts.

HEALTHY HEARTS START IN THE KITCHEN H

COMMUNITY HEALTH NETWORK CARDIOLOGIST WEIGHS-IN ON HEALTHY HEARTS, HAPPY TASTE BUDS

HEALTH

KIT

FOR WAYS TO TAKE A STEP TOWARD YOUR HEART HEALTH IN THE NEW YEAR, START BY LOOKING AT WHAT YOU PUT ON YOUR PLATE. If your food came from an animal or it was processed, it probably has saturated or trans fats. These “bad fats” raise your cholesterol and put you on the path toward heart disease when eaten in excess. 24 kitindy.com

"The jury is still out as to whether or not unsaturated fats are just as good as polyunsaturated fats in a hearthealthy diet," said Karamchand Paul, MD, cardiologist with Community Physician Network. "I recommended that patients limit both, and eat them in moderation until a clear consensus has been achieved by researchers and physicians."

RED MEAT ALTERNATIVES

PASS ON THE BUTTER

How can you indulge and still get the nutrition your body needs? Easy, it’s time to make some substitutions! Everyone knows to cut back on red meats, but a lot of people don’t know how much flavor you can find in lean proteins like salmon.

Thankfully there are ways to get that buttery goodness without all the saturated fat that comes with it.

Salmon is a meat to add to your cooking repertoire. It isn’t just packed with healthy omega-3 fatty acids, it’s also a versatile staple for lunch and dinner. You can bake it, pan-sear it, or even grill it if the weather allows. This fish can pack a lot of flavor if you know what to do with it. Try making a simple teriyaki or honey garlic glaze, or cooking it with lemon and capers along with pasta. Oh, and a word about those meatless burgers. Go easy on them. It’s true that they’re made from plant-based ingredients, but that doesn’t mean that they’re necessarily healthy. They usually contain considerable amounts of unhealthy fats. Just keep thinking of them for what they are — burgers — and make them a once-ina-while meal.

Speaking of guilty pleasures, we have to address the elephant in the room: butter. We all have a love-hate relationship with it.

Instead of adding butter to the pan to sauté your dinner, try an oil. Most oils are packed with healthier unsaturated fats, and can add extra depth of flavor to your meal. Olive and canola oils are two replacements you might have on hand, but avocado and peanut oils are worth exploring for different ethnic meals. Butter is a crucial part of most baking recipes, but it’s not irreplaceable. Other creamy ingredients can do the trick and make your baked goods a bit healthier. Greek yogurt, applesauce and avocado can be substituted in certain recipes to cut back on saturated fat.

KNOW YOUR RISK FACTORS A dietary change can take time, but here’s an easy step you can take in the next five minutes. Take Community’s heart health risk assessment. By answering a few questions about your lifestyle and health history, you can get insight into your risks and a personalized plan for your heart health journey. We may be in the depths of an Indiana winter, but that isn't stopping these three fashionistas from daydreaming about the arrival of sunny spring. Kit enlisted this trio of local style experts to offer pointers on wardobe updates we can make now in preparation for warmer days ahead. From versatile sweaters to the most desirable denim, and all the pieces underneath, this is what those in the know are adding to their closets to look cool next season.

FAST-TRACK TO

SPRING

DOTTIE COUTURE This local boutique is a trusted stop for contemporary women’s fashion. They are known for offering both the season’s hottest trends and classic pieces that won’t break the bank. Brooke Magdzinski, owner of Dottie Couture, encourages women to accessorize every outfit with a healthy dose of confidence. “And if someone pays you a compliment, just say thank you,” she said. “It instantly elevates your style!”

LIGHTWEIGHT SWEATER $42

Spring in the Midwest, with its chilly weather, is the perfect season for a lightweight sweater, but they’re also great year-round. Get one in a neutral color to front tuck into jeans, shorts or to throw over a swimsuit on Spring Break.

FLAT-BRIM HAT $22

Instantly elevate your style or cover up a bad hair day with a trendy flat-brim hat. “When I see a woman wearing a hat, I am instantly impressed because it takes confidence to rock one,” Brooke said.

MIDI SKIRT $46

Pair a midi (midlength) skirt with your favorite rocker tee, sweater or tank. Dress it down with sneakers or dress it up with a heel or bootie. “Skirts will be huge this spring, and I am here for this girly trend."

28 kitindy.com

brooke magdzinski Brooke Magdzinski is owner of Dottie Couture, a women’s clothing boutique with three storefronts in Indiana and a robust online business. She has been in the fashion industry for nearly 15 years, starting as a sales associate at a highend boutique and finding her niche soon after as a buyer. Brooke attends markets several times a year and typically buys a season in advance to see what’s trending before it hits the market.

carla mackie Carla is a certified master bra fitter by National Fit Specialist Freddy Zappe in New York City. She has more than 14 years of experience pairing women with the perfect undergarments. “Proper fit is where it starts, but there’s so much more to it,” Carla said. “There’s a connection between breast health and the right bra, and there’s a connection to overall health associated with proper support.”

UPLIFT INTIMATE APPAREL It has been said that undergarments make the outfit. Carla Mackie, owner of Uplift Intimate Apparel in Carmel, agrees wholeheartedly. “A properly fitted bra, the right panties, shapewear – these are what make you look fabulous in your outfits." This season, stop hiding under bulky sweaters and try new properly fitted undergarments that will change the way you feel about your body. You’ll welcome those spring tees and body-hugging dresses with a renewed and surprising confidence.

LISE CHARMEL CHIC BRA $110

This is a customer favorite at Uplift. It has a smooth spacer fabric with a feminine touch, which molds nicely to the breast and can be worn under anything. It’s available in a variety of colors and sizes.

BLUSH PANTIES 3 pairs for $33

Freshen up your panty drawer with a thong or hipster in sizes XS-XL, in a variety of prints and solids. The popular options mix and match with most bras and don’t show an unwanted panty line under clothing.

WRAP UP ROBE BY VP $218

This robe is Carla’s favorite. It's available in a variety of prints and two lengths. The style is soft and cozy and luxurious to wrap yourself in after a bath or while getting ready for work.

FAUX LEATHER LEGGINGS BY SPANX $98

Faux leather that’s actually comfortable is a thing of beauty. These basic faux leather leggings can easily by dressed up or down and transition well into early spring. The contoured power waistband gives you a flat gut and great butt.

NAVY BLUE JUMPSUIT BY JOSEPH RIBKOFF

POWERFLEX KNIT DENIM JACKET BY LIVERPOOL $98

GIA GLIDER JEAN BY LIVERPOOL $98

Denim knows no season, especially in the Liverpool brand! The Gia Glider style comes up higher in back so that when you bend over, the jeans actually stay up. They also contour your legs and make you look a size smaller. The Gia is the perfect hybrid between a pull-on and a five-pocket jean that actually holds its shape all day long.

Jackets are the perfect piece for transitioning seasons. The black Powerflex knit denim jacket combines the authentic look of denim with the comfort of knit. “Once you try it on, you will never want to have a regular jacket again. The spandex in the Powerflex just feels amazing,” Amber said.

$237

This jumpsuit can be worn with a cardigan or jacket over it as we transition into spring weather. Take this piece with you on Spring Break, as the fabric on this jumpsuit travels beautifully.

amber noone

BASH BOUTIQUE The new year calls for new fashion risks, and Amber Noone, owner of Bash Boutique, located in Westfield, Noblesville and Wabash, Ind., offers the perfect place to find pieces to do just that. Amber suggests experimenting with color a bit more this spring. “We have been keeping it pretty safe with black and gray for quite some time, but color can be a great addition if it’s the right hue for you,” she said. And the statements don't stop there. “We still love our skinny pants, but we are starting to introduce flare pants and they are adorable with the right top and shoes.”

Amber Noone, Bash Boutique owner, started her first boutique in Wabash, Ind., more than five years ago (hence the name). The business venture was born from her infatuation with visiting boutiques all over the county. “I love when someone comes into the store and tells me that the sweater, pants or jacket they bought here is still their favorite piece in their wardrobe."

RELAX REFRESH RENEW Look good and feel your best throughout the New Year.

SMOOTH AND WRINKLE FREE Our popular neurotoxin injectables, Botox and Jeuveau (Newtox) can be used as an easy tool to prevent or treat signs of aging that are caused by repeated facial muscle contraction. These work by temporarily relaxing the muscles that cause these lines to form, often in the forehead, between the eyebrows, and around the eyes to eliminate horizontal lines of the forehead, the “11s”, and the “crows feet”. This leads to a smoother and softer appearance in a matter of days! REPAIR + PROTECT PRODUCT REGIMEN We believe an at-home skincare routine is essential to preparing your skin before treatments and maintaining your results long after your procedure. We have a wide range of medical-grade skincare for every skin type and tone, and when combined with your treatments here, can elevate your results or even reduce your recovery time.

RESTORE A HEALTHY LOOK AND TEXTURE Laser treatments are perfect for the winter season when most are not actively exposed to as much sunlight. Popular laser resurfacing procedures like the CoolPeel or BBL can help correct sun damage, uneven tone and texture, and large pores with little to no downtime. More aggressive treatments like Deep Laser Resurfacing address deep and coarse lines as well as scarring for a powerful transformation, revealing healthier, stronger, and more youthful skin. TRANSFORM AND REJUVENATE As we age, we naturally lose collagen and elasticity, resulting in skin laxity, along with descent and loss of facial volume. Common facial cosmetic procedures such as facelift, browlift, eye lift (upper and/or lower eyelids), and even rhinoplasty can help you regain a youthful look and significantly improve confidence in your appearance with beautiful and natural results. When combined with medical-grade skincare and adjuvant nonsurgical treatments, results are long-lasting and comprehensive.

firsthandsupply.com, $20 WHY HE LOVES IT: This pomade is made from all natural ingredients. Even the container is made of recycled plastic. My friend introduced it to me several years ago and it was the first hair product that kept my hair frizzfree and didn't get greasy.

amazon.com, $8 WHY SHE LOVES IT: I love the minimalistic look of this notepad. Admittedly, by nature I’m not always the most productive person, which isn't acceptable when you work in a deadline-driven field. This notepad has a permanent spot on my desk and I’ve used it for years to keep me on task. Knock Kock® also has other super functional notepad styles. The weekly meal planning one is another staple in my routine.

Lume All Natural Deodorant

lumedeodorant.com, $13.99 WHY SHE LOVES IT: I had been using the same deodorant for years and it just doesn't seem to work anymore. Especially after 24 hours. I had been wanting to try something all natural but was afraid I wouldn't like how it felt. Well, Lume is awesome! It feels great and lasts for more than 48 hours. I use unscented because I am really sensitive to smells, and it's been a perfect fit.

Buxom Lash Mascara

Sephora, Ulta, Amazon, $22 WHY SHE LOVES IT: I have naturally long lashes, but I've always struggled to find good mascara that doesn't clump, dry out quickly or make me look like a raccoon. This mascara gives me a natural look that takes me from morning to night without getting clumpy or flaking off. It has been in my makeup bag since 2014, and I have never tried another, and don't plan to. The brush is perfect, the formula is great (especially if you wear contacts), and the price is affordable. I can't say enough good things about it!

I started with a loaner about 39 years ago, and I'm sure that one is still going strong. I have had several, and they never broke down, they just went to homes with passionate bakers. Through so many birthday cakes, and so many cookies, this powerhouse machine took my baking to the next level.

I've been using it for three years, and love the semi-hidden deals it offers. I've found luxury hotels in London for $100 a night, and have stayed in the Chicago Loop for $50-$80 a night. I highly recommend HotelTonight to anyone who is planning a trip and is looking for a swanky place to stay.

REFRESH AND RENEW YOUR INTERIORS WITH THESE FIVE HOUSEPLANTS FROM ALLISONVILLE NURSERY

LAVENDER

Lavender is a highlight, low-water plant with endless benefits. It’s calming, smells phenomenal, and you can use its sprigs to decorate and perfume your home. And since lavender is sometimes used in baked goods or drinks, it’s the perfect plant for the kitchen.

TERRARIUM

Bring the great outdoors inside. This woodsy terrarium is the ideal statement plant for desks and counters. It takes up less space than other plants and feels both whimsical and natural. And while terrariums can house any number of plants, these small evergreens feel rustic, yet modern. To water, spray them every once in awhile, but be careful not to use too much.

3

ALOE VERA

Cool. Refreshing. Soothing. This beneficial plant is great for your skin, but its positive properties don’t end there. Because it’s a succulent, it’s easy to take care of. With just a little bit of water and medium-to-high light, aloe vera will thrive. Cut a couple of leaves if you get a burn or use it in a drink.

4

MOONSHINE SNAKE PLANT

New plant parents should consider a snake plant. These low-light plants can go anywhere – even in rooms with no natural light. And since they only need to be watered once a month, they can survive in any environment. (Including bathrooms or windowless rooms.)

5

CRISPY WAVE FERN

Ferns are not your traditional houseplant. But when planted in a gorgeous pot, their fun and funky texture fits right in with a modern aesthetic. This little guy is perfect for a countertop and can handle low light environments.

FICUS STARLIGHT

Variegated ficus plants are relatively easy to take care of and boast beautiful, colorful leaves. When done up as a kokedama – the Japanese art of growing plants in a moss-covered ball – it becomes an elegant, unique hanging plant. The ficus takes medium light, and when it comes to water, it can either be sprayed with a water bottle or set in a water-filled dish. Keep in mind that the roots can dry out more easily in winter, due to the furnace.

TIDBITS There are a variety of pots to choose from. Mix and match to create a colorful, complementary combination. A moisture meter is worth every penny. It’s the best tool you can have for houseplants, as over- or under-watering are the most common reasons plants don’t survive. The plants Allisonville Nursery receives are specifically grown to be houseplants. They’re already adapted to indoor environments. Kokedama, is the Japanese art of growing plants in a mosscovered ball.

LIVING IN PLACE

A THOUGHTFUL DESIGN AGING

FOR EVERY SEASON OF LIFE

KIT

Architectural design professional Adam Gibson explains the importance of making homes more comfortable and accessible to everyone, regardless of age or ability.

HOW IS “LIVING IN PLACE” DIFFERENT FROM “AGING IN PLACE”? “Aging in Place” concepts are focused on people who want to remain in their homes as they age. The type of design I do has a more in-depth coverage of people’s needs. “Living in Place” is a more comprehensive type of design. It’s about making all homes accessible, comfortable and safe for everyone. There’s even an institute dedicated to the practice, called The Living In Place Institute.

HOW DID YOU GET INTERESTED IN THE CONCEPT OF LIVING IN PLACE? For the last 20 years, a lot of my focus has been on kitchen and bath design. I moved into full-scale architectural design about 10 years ago and initially concentrated on Aging in Place concepts. Then I started realizing that I knew a lot of families who had unique, specific needs. I worked with one family who had an autistic child. I also worked with an individual who had vertigo and needed a horizon line to keep herself upright.

38 kitindy.com

HOW WOULD YOU DESIGN A BATHROOM TO SUPPORT THE IDEA OF “LIVING IN PLACE”? For the client who had vertigo, I designed a shower that has a horizon line – a row of accent tiles – five feet off the floor. Because those tiles were a different texture and color than the rest, she remained upright without having to hold on for dear life. I also design towel bars to be actual grab bars. (How many people have had their child pull a towel bar out of the wall?) These are designed to hold up to 250 pounds, and they’re so decorative that you can’t tell it’s not a towel bar.

EVERY DETAIL IS IMPORTANT. WHAT’S A “SMALL THING” YOU ALWAYS INCORPORATE? Lever door handles, which are far better than knobs. People with arthritic hands have trouble gripping “regular” door handles. I like to use levers that have a “return” (the piece at the end that bends back toward the door). If someone loses their balance but grabs the door, it can catch them and save them from a pretty disastrous fall.

WHAT ARE SOME DESIGN DETAILS THAT BENEFIT EVERYONE, REGARDLESS OF AGE AND/OR ABILITY? Beach-entry, or curbless, showers are natural and aesthetically pleasing for those who have needs and for those who don’t. Doors, especially in a bathroom, should swing outward. That way, if someone slips and falls, you can still get to them. I like to have shower doors swing both ways – outward for safety, inward for aesthetics. It’s a small thing that may not be noticeable, but works well for everyone.

WHAT ARE SOME WAYS A HOMEOWNER CAN PLAN AHEAD? KITCHENS ARE THE HEART OF THE HOME. WHAT DO YOU RECOMMEND?

▢ Toe-kick lighting is for more than just aesthetics. They make for a good night light and show people the walk line.

▢ Lowering the reflectance of counter tops makes a big difference. Consider honed or matte surfaces rather than polished counter tops. ▢ Don’t put a microwave above a cooking surface. A vertically challenged person, or someone weaker than average, can get severely burned when removing hot liquids.

▢ Use push-to-open drawers, or drawer and cabinet pulls that are easy to grip for those with arthritic joints.

When planning, I often draw a doorway to be framed for a 36-inch door (which is ADA-compliant). I can infill it and make sure the electrical switch isn’t in that infill. Should the need arise, the homeowner can order a new door and, within a couple of hours, have a wheelchairaccessible doorway. If it’s a multi-story home, I’ll stack closets on top of each other. That way, you can easily remove the flooring between the floors and have an elevator shaft. This is prohibitively expensive if not planned in advance. But with forethought, there is much less cost.

Adam Gibson is an Indianapolisbased architectural design professional specializing in luxury home additions, homes, kitchens, bathrooms, entertainment spaces and commercial suites. Adam is a Certified Master Kitchen and Bath Designer, a Certified Aging in Place Specialist and a Certified Living In Place Professional. Known for infusions of natural light, clean lines and efficient use of space, Adam brings out-of-thebox imagination, eco-friendly technologies and a healthy environment to each of his designs.

▢ Consider a flush-mounted, induction cooktop. Aside from being the quickest and most efficient, flushing it with the counter top adds to the work area.

forty questions FOR YOUR PARENTS Roots author Alex Haley once said, “In every conceivable manner, family is the link to our past, the bridge to our future.” These are wise words, but most of us fail to ask our parents about their pasts, the family tree and our own childhoods until it’s too late. You may have already lost a parent, and if you haven’t, you may be facing that unfortunate circumstance before long. BY JUDY BURNETT* *This article was originally published in 2013. Over the years, it has become a favorite among Kit readers, which inspired us to share Judy's wise words once again.

In the coming days, set aside some time to sit down with your parents and, with a video camera or digital tape recorder at hand, ask a few questions so that you can record an oral family history. It may take more than one session to get all of your questions answered. Begin the conversation by letting your parents know how important their memories are to their children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Here are 40 questions to use as a starting point (you may want to add to this list). These questions should lead to some enlightening and entertaining conversations with your mom or dad. You’ll learn things about them you never knew, and you’ll probably come away with an increased respect for their lives, the choices they’ve made and the challenges they’ve overcome.

refresh YOUR HOME THIS IS THE YEAR. The year you finally put up window treatments; print and frame family photos; declutter that guest room that has slowly become an extension of your attic; take on a complete remodeling project. After all, you’ve watched more than enough HGTV. We believe in you. And whether your New Year’s resolution is to reorganize, renovate or refresh your home, the impressive network of design professionals at the Indiana Design Center (IDC) can help. The IDC in Carmel is approaching its tenth year as a premier destination for the design community and Indiana residents looking to build, remodel or decorate their homes. Design professionals and the public are welcome to shop in all first floor retail showrooms, many of which also offer in-house design services. As you set about taking action and tackling your residential resolutions, keep these expert tips from the IDC team in mind and remember, they’re here if you need them!

DRAPERY STREET WINDOW TREATMENTS CAN MAKE A HOUSE FEEL LIKE A HOME. Drapery Street is a design boutique that offers modern window treatments and custom design. owner Caryn O’Sullivan offers these tips for ways to refresh the windows in your home in 2020. ▢ Examine “trouble spots” and tackle these first. These issues are often easy to fix yet cause major frustration throughout the day. For example, a blind with a broken cord or a shade that lets too much light into a bedroom. ▢ Mix trends with timeless choices and choose wisely. For pieces you’ll keep for years, choose timeless options. Keep trends contained to easy to swap pieces. For example, Silhouette® shades are a classic choice for windows. Bring in trending fabrics with pillows. ▢ Technology never goes out of style! Invest in home automation that will make your home function for you, like motorized shades that automatically open at sunrise and close at sunset.

▢ When refreshing your space, working with a designer can actually help you save time and money by preventing you from making costly mistakes. Indiana Design Center Suite 109 (317) 342-9594 draperystreet.com Caryn O’Sullivan, Owner

FERGUSON BATH, KITCHEN & LIGHTING GALLERY Sometimes the smallest details can have the largest impact. If you’re looking to upgrade your kitchen, bath or lighting in 2020, the experts at Ferguson Bath, Kitchen & Lighting Gallery have you covered. Ferguson showroom manager Natalie Gertiser offers these tips for refreshing your home: » Update your lighting in a main room and it can feel like you have changed the space. Mixing metals is also common, so don’t feel locked into one finish. You don’t have to redo the rest of your house just because you replace one light fixture. » The powder room is one of the most used spaces in your house whenever you have guests. Colored vanities add a lot of style and are a fun way to quickly change the look of that space. » Updating your kitchen faucet, which is the most used faucet in your house, can completely enhance the look of the kitchen. For an added bonus, explore some of the new technology features! Need some advice on how to get started? Ferguson consultants are available to meet with you one-on-one in the showroom. RUSTED WINDOW HOLDER MATTRESS Many of us start the new year with a resolution to be healthier. But your body won’t really cooperate unless you’re getting proper sleep. Whether you’d like to lose weight, start exercising, focus better at work or be a more patient parent, sleep is critical. But, for many of us, the question is where do we begin? Lauren Taylor, owner and president of Holder Mattress, offers these tips for refreshing your bedroom and setting the stage to get a good night’s rest. » A new mattress designed for you and the way you sleep is the foundation. The staff at Holder are trained to help find the best mattress set for your individual needs. » Pillows should be replaced every 1 - 5 years, and can make a huge difference in the quality of your sleep. » Bedding is a big deal. Breathable and natural materials like tencel make great sheets that help regulate your body temperature. » Sleep is most successful in a cool, dark room. Avoid screens and alcohol before bed. If something is weighing on you, write it down so your mind can let go of it and you can deal with it in the morning. Try calming essential oils like lavender or chamomile to help relax.

Everyone wants their home to feel welcoming. If one of your resolutions this year is to get your house in better order, enlist the advice of expert Stacy Molander, owner and lead designer at Rusted Window. Rusted Window is a lifestyle boutique that takes great care in helping clients create a comfortable and gracious feeling not only in their home, but in the gifts they give. They offer unique items in home decor and gifts, and operate as a full-service wedding florist and event rental boutique. Here, Stacy offers her steps for restoring order and calm.

PAIR’D FURNISHINGS WHY NOT GET A REFRESH SOME SOMEWHERE EXCITING? Pair’d is a high-end furniture manufacturer from Bangladesh, and Carmel’s Indiana Design Center is home to their first showroom in the United States. They offer their own furniture collection of unique styles inspired by classic pieces. Stephanie Riwitis, Pair’d operations manager, suggests refreshing the home by bringing in new decorative accessories, art, pillows or paint. A colorful accent chair, a fun side table, new lamps or a new rug always freshen up a room.

Stephanie says it’s important to really analyze the way you use the room that you want to renovate. From there, you might decide to rearrange furniture for better functionality, get rid of the pieces that don’t serve the space anymore, or bring in new furniture that actually suits your needs in that room. Pair’d can help, no matter what you decide. Indiana Design Center Suite 107 (317) 740-0318 pairdfurnishings.com Stephanie Riwitis

All of their products are customizable, and their expert team is available to help at every stage of a project, from conception to installation. Looking to add that “wow” factor? Cori recommends a pair of sliding glass doors. Whether for a closet or to divide two rooms, this is one easy way to completely change the look of a space. Lorenzo Finestre offers glass sliding doors made in Italy. Some of the hottest trends are smoked glass, multi-lite grids and glass with metal mesh. The doors are completely customizable from the frame finish to the color of the glass. Indiana Design Center Suite 214 (317) 379-7935 Lorenzofinestre.com Cori Brown, CEO

CONCEPTUAL KITCHENS & MILLWORK Perhaps you’ve already done the light refresh — a few times, actually — and you’re ready for more of a kitchen overhaul. Conceptual Kitchens & Millwork can help. They specialize in full remodels and new project builds, keeping aesthetics top of mind as they create. Amy Kreutz, partner and senior designer at Conceptual Kitchens, emphasizes the importance of color and texture in a kitchen remodel. She says many clients are choosing wood over tile in their kitchens, and the reasons make sense: It feels better on bare feet, and there are so many textures and colors of wood to choose from nowadays. Cabinet finishes in the kitchen remodel can be a nod to the furnishings in the other rooms of the home.

renew YOU

LIVING WITH INTENTION STEPHEN ELLIOTT, MD

IT’S YOUR TURN. You may have had the best of intentions in 2019, but life got in the way. Write down your goals and start. Today. Not tomorrow, not Monday. Not next month. Your time to take control in 2020 starts now. A better version of yourself is within reach. From fitness to fashion and well-being to happy floral arrangements, you’ll find what you need to get motivated to make this decade one you won’t forget. Your body is in a constant state of renewal. Literally. Just ask Dr. Elliott. You can make a fresh start. You can make the change. You just have to— begin.

52 kitindy.com

Today, there’s not a single cell in your body that was present seven years ago. Like it or not, renewal is inevitable. You renew. I renew. Everyone renews. We are, each of us, forever in the process of becoming.

The existential fact of renewal is not the issue. It’s the quality of that renewal that’s up for grabs. It’s what we’re becoming that matters, that makes a difference in the quality of our lives, and, humbling and scary though the thought may be, that makes a difference in the lives of those around us.

an opportunity of becoming something better, a better version of ourselves. At transitions like this we resolve: to intentionally eat better, to exercise more, to make family a greater priority, to learn something new, and so on.

We learn from nature that beginnings and endings go hand in hand. Each requires and defines the other. As with spring and fall, as with every cell in our body, so it is with everything. For every birth, there must, of necessity, be death.

Each of these new beginnings, however, requires that something old must come to an end. Making better food choices means that the old, bad food habits have to go. For exercise to become a reality, then those time-suckers that keep us from exercising have to die (like phone/social media, perhaps).

And so, at the beginning of this new decade, this new year, we are, each of us, faced with

But dying is okay. After all, without dying, there can be no new birth. And birth is hopeful.

LIVING WITH INTENTION LINDA ELLIOTT MA, LMHC THE NEW YEAR IS THE PERFECT TIME TO TAKE A FRESH LOOK at how closely aligned our lives are with what we believe to be our life’s priorities. Each of us are unique individuals, living unique lives. And just as a calendar year has different seasons, so do our lives. We can so easily slip into mindless routines and habits that made perfect sense in one season of life, but are no longer serving us well. And sometimes what we tell ourselves regarding what is most important to us, isn’t receiving the time and attention it merits. This new year, give yourself the gift of a quiet place, your favorite warm beverage, a piece of paper and a pen. Be still and consider what is most important to you. Begin by brainstorming, writing down everything that comes to mind. Put the list away for a few days, then go back and look at it again. Is anything missing? Are there things that should be removed?

Once you’ve determined your top priorities (probably 4 or 5 at most), review your daily calendar and checkbook. Does your spending, both of time and money, reflect the priorities you’ve identified? If so, wonderful! You have the assurance that you are spending your time and resources on those people and things that are most important to you. If not, begin making gentle, manageable adjustments in order to create a life in which your resources are spent on the people and things that matter most. Living an intentional life!

AMANDA’S EXCHANGE The first part of the year is a great time to take inventory of and clear out the wardrobe. Closets are often so full that the more we have to choose from, the harder time we have actually seeing what we own. HERE ARE FOUR PRACTICAL STEPS TO DECLUTTER YOUR CLOSET:

1

Pull out all of your hanging clothing and place them into piles, organized by pants, dresses, special occasion, etc.

2

Touch each piece before you hang it back into your closet. Consider these questions: » Does it fit right now? » Does it flatter me? » Does it reflect my current style? » Is it in great condition? » Does it serve a purpose?

3

If you can answer yes to these questions, hang the item back in your closet. When you do, follow these guidelines for optimal organization. » Group like items together. » Color-code within each grouping. » Hang pants and jeans lengthwise for easier viewing.

» Hang out-of-season clothing to the back. » Face all hangers the opposite direction. At the end of the season, you’ll be able to easily see which items were not worn.

4

For discarded items, divide them into three categories: » Resell: Pieces currently in style and in excellent condition; they just need someone new to love them. » Donate: Pieces more than three years old with slight wear but in good shape. » Discard: Items stained or excessively worn. Keep your closet fresh by repeating this process at the beginning of each season. Consider also removing pieces from your closet every time you shop. (If you purchase three items, discard three items.) This will keep your closet clutter-free!

McNAMARA FLORIST When we put our holiday decorations away for the year, our homes can feel a little empty. A great way to bridge the gap between holiday décor and spring is to bring in some green plants. If you don’t have a green thumb, look for a great silk plant that will still liven up the space. Slowly adding green back into our life can refresh a space as well as boost our mood. Green plants are moodboosters, and they also help to clean the air around us. It’s never too late to learn how to care for a plant! McNamara has a selection of plants that are considered easy to care for. They also have animal and kid-friendly plants. Focus on invigorating your space with plants in the rooms where you spend the most time, such as the kitchen, living room and bedroom. Peace lilies are great for bedrooms because they can tolerate low light and they are known to clean the air, which can help you sleep better. KIT Interior by Rachel Rae Hadley | Photo by Chris Whonsetler

After we pack away all of those holiday decorations, our home can seem so bare. For the team at Kit, this makes the end of the festive season a little ... well, depressing. Can you relate? Don’t despair! Rachel Rae Hadley is here with five quick and inexpensive ways to dial up your decor without cashing in all of those gift cards you got in your stocking. There’s nothing like a design refresh to lift the spirit.

CONSULT THE PLANT GURUS AT MCNAMARA AND ALLISONVILLE NURSERY FOR HELP PICKING THE PERFECT GREENS FOR YOUR SPACE!

ROUND UP

Swap out your holiday wreath for a classic round mirror. Rachel snagged this option at Lowes for just $50. Kit's decorating expert Rachel Rae Hadley loves adding seasonal accents to the Noblesville home she shares with her husband and three college-age kids.

SLIP SAVINGS

Throw pillows flattening your funds? Purchase a pillow cushion ($7 at Ikea) to keep out all year and swap out seasonal pillow covers ($10-$25 on Amazon) to inject personality. It’s a cost-effective strategy for sprucing up your interior on a budget.

COZY THREADS

Tuck away the buffalo plaid and introduce an equally warm throw. Afterall, it’s still winter. Rachel loves going to TJ Maxx to browse their impressive selection. She scored this green gem for about $25.

CITRUS SENSE

Retire your evergreenscented candles and try citrus aromas to ring in the new year. Rachel loves Aromatique candles from McNamara, especially the Valencia Orange option. It’s sweet orange mixed with apple and red berries – a wonderful fresh wintery fragrance.

FIG OR FAUX?

After the evergreen is gone, get some succulents, a fig plant and a rosemary bush to add a little life back into the space. If you don’t exactly have a green thumb, just go with artificial. They look like the real thing!

skin secrets:

THE EVER-CHANGING FACE OF SKIN CARE: EMBRACE TECHNOLOGY IN 2020 As technology evolves, we’re able to deliver really superior results with less downtime. While nothing yet surpasses the results of the HALO Pro for attacking texture, pore size and pigment problems all at once, many people want another option that can get their skin looking optimum with a bit less discomfort and recovery. Enter HALO’s partner in crime, Vivace RF (pronounced Viv-ah-chee). Vivace RF is a robotic micro-needling treatment combined with radio frequency that allows us to treat all skin types with just a four-hour window of downtime (redness). While micro-needling sounds terrifying, the treatment can reduce pore size, smooth fine lines and soften scars. The energy delivered into the deeper tissues by RF stimulates the skin to produce more collagen (production decreases significantly as we age), creating a tighter surface with softer lines over time. Vivace RF sells itself as the treatment that can fit into your workday and still allow you to go out to dinner the same night. Our team tested this on several occasions and found this to be exactly the case: with a little light makeup, no one noticed any lingering redness and we were out and about as normal the same day of treatment. Did we mention all skin types can be treated? It’s true; even our darkest and most sensitive skins are eligible! The combination of micro-needling and RF work especially well to treat vertical lines on the neck and even on immature stretch marks after pregnancy, as well as acne scars.

After the ball drops, many establish resolutions and renewed focus. While these can span the gamut of personal goals, most people choose to focus on aspects of their health and wellness.

DO: purchase a cute,

DO: be a cheerleader.

DON’T: lecture

them on the health hazards of diet soda. Most likely, they already know. Plus, sometimes it’s about progress over perfection!

DON’T: be a coach

There’s a popular belief that it’s the perfect time to hit the reset button — a new year, a new you! While those fitness and nutrition goals are wonderful, they may oddly enough trigger comments that are insensitive and downright hurtful. I believe a lack of etiquette is often due to a lack of self-awareness. Many times, people unknowingly say things that sting and it truly wasn’t their intention.

Susan Beckwith is a certified etiquette coach and blogger behind Belle of the Midwest

DO: your part to help them be successful. Initiate going on a walk or to the gym together or choose to meet at a restaurant with healthy meal options.

All hail citrus season! These tart, tremendous fruits bring light and life in the dead of winter to those of us in the upper zones of the Northern Hemisphere. Their arrival is often an overlooked gift during the season of giving. Selling seasonal citrus for the marching band in high school was a great fundraiser and an excellent introduction to freshly picked, packed, shipped fruit. Since then, I have developed favorites, elated when they show up in the stores in November. They include (but certainly aren’t limited to) satsumas, sumos, blood oranges, Cara Cara, Meyer lemons and ruby red grapefruit. You can get oranges, lemons and limes all year, but these special varieties are only here for a short time, so get them while you can! Citrus fruits are great sweet or savory, and enhance most dishes and drinks. If I put a slice of blood orange in my tea or sparkling water, I feel like a queen all day. Here, I’ve gathered a few of my favorite citrus recipes. One is an orange sauce I fell in love with

60 kitindy.com

decades ago. I’ve lighted it up a bit, but it is heavy on flavor and perfect served with a mild fish such as sea bass or cod, and would be great with duck as well. I also embrace citrus overload on my breakfast plate. I use my preferred box pancake mix and elevate the stack with roasted sliced citrus, served with warm pure maple syrup and whipped citrus-mascarpone cheese. I’m also sharing a dessert called Pavlova. It’s an egg white base filled with a whipped cream that shines with three different types of citrus curd. So, join me in celebrating the joys of citrus – the sweet, the savory, the sensational.

Discover where to find the sweetest local maple syrup on page 14.

Citrus Mascarpone Pancakes I must admit, a few years ago I tried to find the perfect recipe for light and fluffy pancakes and discovered that I actually preferred the “just add water box mix. I would rather spend my time dressing them up anyway.

1 /4 cup pure maple syrup 4 large citrus fruits, such as oranges and grapefruit, peeled and sliced 1 /2 Mascarpone Grated peel from 2 oranges or grapefruit 2 tablespoons powdered sugar

1| Toss the maple syrup with the peeled and sliced citrus. Arrange fruit on parchment and broil in the oven for about 4 minutes, watching carefully so the citrus does not burn. 2| Whip the Mascarpone then add the grated citrus and powdered sugar. 3| To serve, spread the mascarpone on each pancake. Serve with the warm citrus.

Orange Sauce

Citrus Pavlova

3 tablespoons diced shallots 6 tablespoons cold butter 1 cup orange juice 1 teaspoon orange zest 1 /2 white wine a few drops of hot sauce 2 tablespoons plain yogurt

PAVLOVA

It’s very important that you don’t boil the sauce after the reduction and the butter have been added. I suggest doing the reduction part first and finishing it just before serving.

1| In a small saucepan, sauté the shallots using 1 tablespoon of the butter until translucent. Add the orange juice and white wine and boil until it reduces down to just a few tablespoons. (At this point you can remove from heat and set aside until just before serving) 2| Add the butter 1 tablespoon at a time, whisking until melted. (Carefully warm the reduction if you set aside.) Add the hot sauce and whisk in the yogurt. Serve warm on top of your preferred protein. I used cod on a bed of greens, but you could serve over rice and veggies. Recipe makes about 4 servings.

These will be filled with the citrus whipped cream

1 tablespoon cornstarch 1 cup granulated sugar 4 egg whites at room temperature 1 teaspoon good quality vanilla 1 teaspoon white or malt vinegar 1| Preheat oven to 300 degrees. 2| Mix the cornstarch and sugar in a small bowl and set aside. Beat the egg whites until they form soft peaks, then slowly add in the sugar and cornstarch mixture.
