Impending Closure to U.S. 421 Crossover

JULIAN - The N.C. Department of Transportation will improve traffic flow and safety by removing a center crossover intersection on U.S. 421 in Randolph County next month.

An NCDOT contractor will close the left-turn movements from Shiloh Road/Colonial Trading Path to U.S. 421 on March 20 to reduce the possibility of t-bone and angle crashes at this location.

Drivers will soon turn right from Shiloh Road or Colonial Trading Path, travel on U.S. 421 for a short distance and safely make a u-turn to travel on their desired route.

In addition, U.S. 421 will be reduced to one lane of travel in each direction beginning on March 20 and lasting into the autumn.

This lane reduction will allow the contractor to work on the outside shoulders and aid in construction.

The speed limit will also be reduced to 55 mph in the work zone within the project limits. This speed limit reduction is also expected to include a $250 penalty for speeding within a work zone.

The work is part of a larger project to improve intersections along U.S. 421 surrounding the Greensboro Randolph Megasite.

NCDOT has collaborated with local of fi cials, Randolph County Emergency Management, Randolph County Schools, and the North Carolina State Highway Patrol in an effort to improve traffic mobility and safety in the area. The detour routes are as follows:

From Shiloh Road:

• Take U.S. 421 South to Old Liberty Road.

• Take Old Liberty Road to U.S. 421 North.

• Take U.S. 421 North to Colonial Trading Path.

From Colonial Trading Path:

• Take U.S. 421 North to N.C. 62.

• Take N.C. 62 to U.S. 421 South.

• Take U.S. 421 South to Shiloh Road. Motorists are reminded to slow down and remain alert when approaching the work zone and detour.

Every time the U.S. Army moved

Colonel Guy Troy and his late wife Wynne to a different location around the world, the couple had one goal in mind. “We wanted to leave the community a better place than we found it,” he said. “We wanted to become a part of the community and make a difference.”

When Colonel Troy retired from the Army in 1976 and he and Wynne moved to the Troy family farm in just west of Liberty, the couple set about to do just that.

Wynne, along with friend Pam Sawer (now Stephens) opened a popular shop called “Lavender and Lace” in downtown Liberty. The couple became an active part of the Piedmont Land Conservancy, and Colonel Troy began his community service by serving on numerous boards, including the Liberty Planning and Zoning Board, the Randolph County Planning Board and the North Carolina Aviation Museum Board of Directors. In addition, making use of years of military experience, he became a member of the Randolph County Honor Guard.

An avid historian, Colonel Troy volunteered to serve on Liberty’s Patterson Cottage Committee, the group charged with caring for the 1884 cottage, the oldest remaining residence in the town. The cottage, which was donated to the Town of Liberty in 1976, soon became Liberty’s unofficial museum.

As chairman of the committee in 1999, Colonel Troy led fund raising efforts that gave Liberty one of its favorite icons, the Liberty Heritage Wall.

The wall, which is actually a mural seven feet tall and twenty feet wide, is located in the hallway between the Liberty Public Library and the Liberty Town Hall. The wall, a project of the Patterson Cottage Committee, was designed by Beverly Wilson and Brenda Shelton and consisted of clay tiles which were fired by Seagrove artisan Ad Vanderstaak. The group worked on the tiles in the old Liberty Depot, courtesy of the late Jim Wilson.

The Heritage Wall consists of images of parks, the train depot, the old firehouse and the Curtis Theatre, among others. An oak tree, with the date of the first deed in the “new town of Liberty”, 1809, is in the center of the wall. Thanks to Colonel Troy’s leadership and the group’s endeavors, funds were raised from the wall that still help support the Patterson Cottage today.

In 2018, when the newly formed Friends of the Patterson Cottage began efforts to find a space for a real museum in Liberty, Colonel Troy quickly became the largest individual supporter of the project.

The Heritage Wall, Patterson Cottage, the soon-to-be Liberty Heritage Museum, and the conservation of the Troy Farm are all results of the Troy’s desire to improve their community. Liberty is certainly a better place because of the Troy’s desire to make a difference.

Franklinville’s Riverside Park is a popular place for birthday parties, cookouts, weddings, showers, reunions, church outings, and so much more! Liberty Fire Department Update

Liberty Fire Department held a promotion ceremony Friday evening at Liberty Town Hall. We're proud to announce the promotions of Dakota Holt to C-shift Lieutenant, Jonathan Hall to C-shift Fire Engineer and Bryan Joyal to C-shift firefighter/reserve driver. Mike Wilson was promoted to B-shift Lieutenant, Cody Hulin to B-shift Fire Engineer and Steve Caudill to B-shift firefighter/reserve driver. Terry Wright was promoted to A-shift Lieutenant, Tommy Coble to A-shift Fire Engineer and Christian Barnhardt to A-shift firefighter/reserve driver. Jacob Whatley was given his LFD shield and has been officially welcomed onto the department. Fire Marshall Jason Coleman was promoted to Captain. Lieutenant Bret Pedigo was promoted to Captain. NCDOT Urges Safety Around Railroad Tracks

RALEIGH – State transportation officials are reminding people to stay off railroad property because it is illegal and dangerous.

“Railroad property and tracks are for trains and are not for walking, jogging or any form of trespassing,” said Jason Orthner, director for the N.C. Department of Transportation’s Rail Division. “This time of year, students are also taking senior and prom pictures. We strongly urge photographers to not trespass on railroad property.”

NCDOT’s Rail Division also urges people to follow these tips:

• Pedestrians should always cross the railroad at safe, legal crossings such as bridges, underpasses, and railroad crossings with signage.

• Never walk or jog on railroad property or along a railroad track. Railroads are private property and are not walking paths.

• Never stop your vehicle on railroad tracks at a crossing; make sure you have room for your vehicle before proceeding across.

• If there is an emergency at a railroad crossing, call the number on the blue sign at the crossing. This is the fastest way to alert officials who manage the railroad. The division’s BeRailSafe program provides important rail safety information to the public, schools, law enforcement and first responders. Please visit www.berailsafe.org for more information.

Lily Butler was a senior at Providence Grove High School, where she excelled academically and athletically She was a passionate and accomplished distance runner, inspiring her cross country and track teammates to exceed their own expectations. Lily embodied selflessness and humility. She believed a person's character was defined by how they treated others. Lily had a big heart and was a good listener. She will be remembered by her kindness and loving spirit Lily lost her longfought battle with an eating disorder on July 20, 2021. She was seventeen years old.

This is a charitable event with proceeds going to The Oaks Therapeutic Community and Randolph County Family Crisis Center

"I know Roho" is a phrase coined by many throughout the years in our community. Rogelio Tinoco or Roho as he is better known. started out as a delivery driver for a hardware building store in Randleman. For years he had dreamed of opening his own store to call his own and with his boss soon retiring he figured it was now or never. With the many years of experience he has accumulated and the love and support of his friends and family his dream became a reality. In 2013 he opened up a small store in Randleman, NC, named Rohos General Store. When the store first opened it started out small with some hardware tools and landscaping products. We realized that the thought of expanding was inevitable as the community around us began requesting construction materials such as lumber, shingles, and much more. Our store grew to a tremendous size thanks to our community and we are glad to be a part of it in helping it grow too. In 2022 it was decided that it was time to expand to a second location in Liberty, NC. We hope to have the same level of trust and support in each other with the community in LIberty that we have earned in Randleman. Both stores are stocked with items such as hardware, plumbing, and electrical supplies and a multitude of construction materials such as lumber, masonry blocks, shingles and much more. Preserving African American History

The town of Siler City got a colorful new addition with this beautiful Mural. The mural was painted in honor of the original African America store owners. And what a perfect time to paint the history of these buildings durning Black History Month. All of these amazing painters are A&T students or Alumni. I had the pleasure of speaking with Darlene Mcclinton and she shared with me her passion of providing opportunities to aspiring artist to get out and do what they love and making a career of it. She is giving them the opportunity to do what they love in life.

He regularly writes a blog (at jaymarshallonline.com) and recently published When the Spirit Calls A new book is scheduled to be released in November 2023. Jay views retirement life as a " ministry of availability," meaning he has the freedom to say "yes" to the right opportunities as they arise. Born in North Carolina and raised in the Plainfield Friends community of Chatham County, Jay now resides in Greens Fork, Indiana with his wife Judi, who is an ordained elder in the United Methodist Church.

5:00 PM - 8:00 PM and Sunday 12:00 PM - 2:00 PM. They have a unique menu that varies from day to day. I would suggest following them on Facebook to get the chefs menu for the day they post. Pick your main course and then you get one of all their sides with unlimited refills. Not to forget their great desserts. They have items from flame grilled steaks to old fashion favorite meals . Hi Everyone! Save Our Staley

We had a great meeting last night at the Staley Fire Dept. There were several new faces and visitors that came, interested in the information, and concerned for their community and the surrounding communities. Any kind of development does not only affect the land on which it sits, but also the surrounding areas, for miles. This would be affecting the quality of life for many who might not realize it.

One thing that made an impression on the committee is that many people, outside of Staley, are concerned and are hungry for more information, and to know what they can do to help.

We announced the winner of the 50/50 raffle, and even though being present was not required, we were so glad that it was someone present at the meeting!

House Representative Neil Jackson and Senator Amy Galey were present at the meeting as our guests by invitation. We greatly appreciate their efforts to come and listen to the concerns of our community.

We also appreciate County Commissioners David Allen and Kenny Kidd for making the effort to stop by after another meeting they had a prior commitment to. They also stayed and spoke to several memebers of our community.

We passed out a flyer that has our County Commissioners information on it, along with some helpful points, to encourage everyone to call or email them- and politely, short and sweet, - inform them of the opposition to a quarry coming to the area and the desire to preserve our area as rural, agricultural, and residential.

When Barney told Andy he should just let Opie "decide for himself" how he wanted to live… Andy had these words of wisdom.

"No, I'm afraid it don't work that way. You can't let a young’n decide for himself. He'll grab at the first flashy thing with shiny ribbons on it. Then, when he finds out there's a hook in it, it's too late. Wrong ideas come packaged with so much glitter that it's hard to convince ‘em that other things might be better in the long run. All a parent can do is say 'wait' and 'trust me' and try to keep temptation away."

Somehow... we have lost this basic truth. Too many people are more worried about being their child’s friend, than in being a parent.
