A
fter running the Bank of America Chicago Marathon last year, I found a fair number of my acquaintances had a similar reaction: “I can’t believe you did that! I could never run a marathon!” While I certainly understood why they would feel this way—26.2 miles is a long way to run, after all—I almost always had the same response for them: “If I can do it, you can do it.” I firmly believe that to be true. I’m far from being an elite athlete. I don’t spend the majority of my waking hours running—not even close. But yet I still completed a marathon a mere two years after I picked up running. How? Through training. Diligent, smart training can get anyone to the start and finish line of his or her first, second or 50th marathon. Though it does take a lot of dedication, if you’re willing to carve out time in your life to consistently run farther and farther for four to five months, you, too, can run a marathon. It helps to have a base to begin your training. On page 32, Will Wagner writes on the importance of base building. Right now is the ideal time to start preparing your body and mind for the task of marathon training. No matter what kind of mileage you currently run, using this time to prepare for the task ahead will have major benefits once marathon training gets underway. Marathon training isn’t just about running, however. Cross training provides important physical benefits that both complement your running and help stave off every runner’s worst fear: injuries. Kate Bongiovanni introduces us to the specific benefits of several cross training options on page 36. Though marathon training certainly can cut into your social life, it also provides you with the unique opportunity to get to know other runners. Long runs, unsurprisingly, take a long time to complete, but having company can make the time fly by. Many local running groups organize long runs for fall marathon training. If you’re looking for a running buddy, be sure to check out page 40. Be sure to stick with Chicago Athlete throughout the summer for continued updates on marathon preparation. I’ll be sharing a bit of my journey to this year’s Bank of America Chicago Marathon here and on www.mychicagoathlete.com, and I hope you’ll join me!

World Running uses a grassroots ranking system that factors times, race conditions, age and number of races completed into an individual’s rank. Users can input their own times into the site after each race and watch their rankings change according to their performance. In addition to global rankings, World Running also provides training plans, nutrition and injury advice and up-to-date running news. spiring or current triathletes looking for a low-key alternative to traditional multisport retailers have a new option in Live Grit, a store that hopes to be the “most comfortable bike-swim-run store you’ve ever seen.” The idea for Live Grit came from owner Gillian Fealy’s own experience as a recreational triathlete. Fealy felt unnerved by the competitive atmosphere she noticed at other multisport stores and resorted to purchasing her gear online in order to avoid feeling out of place. “I didn’t feel comfortable going into triathlon stores and asking questions,” Fealy says. “I felt like my questions were stupid, like how to fix a flat tire for the fifth time.” Live Grit, located at 1010 W. Monroe, intends to be a beginner-friendly, non-intimidating location. It has the markings of a traditional multisport store, with a wide range of gear and equipment, but labels its prod16

ucts with “Learn,” “Train,” or “Achieve” tags in addition to normal markings to help shoppers understand what gear they need for their experience and competitiveness levels. Fealy hopes this user-friendly labeling, along with special events hosted by the store, will set Live Grit apart as an entirely different multisport shopping experience. “There is more to life than triathlons, so we have events that have nothing to do with triathlons: happy hour, art exhibits, brunches after rides,” Fealy says. “It’s a community of like-minded people and a lifestyle. That’s what we’re trying to sell here and the community we’re trying to create.” Live Grit is open from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Mondays, tuesdays, thursdays and Fridays, from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Wednesdays, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturdays and from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sundays. Dan Lowry of Playmakers Elite took third in the race with a time of 23:17. “After being outkicked last year, it’s nice to come in first place,” Riley said in a press release. “I love this race. It’s got a great energy to it. It’s great for training.” In the women’s race, first-time Bank of America Shamrock Shuffle participant Katie Kellner, also a Hansons-Brooks Distance Project runner, won the event in 27:13. Evanston Running Club’s Laura Batternick finished second in the race with a time of 27:30, and Danna Herrick of Urbandale, Iowa rounded out the top three in 27:37.

igh School track and field athletes from around the state descended on Illinois Wesleyan University during the last weekend of March for the Illinois Top Times High School Track & Field Indoor Championship. The meet, designed to produce a premier indoor championship experience for Illinois athletes and coaches, saw several top performances by Chicago area high schoolers. Aurora Christian’s Peyton Wade was the lone local 1A top three finisher, taking second in the girls 60 meter hurdles, third in the girls high jump and third in the girls long jump. Though she recorded a 5-04” leap in the meet’s high jump, earlier in the season Wade cleared 5-08.75”: the best high jump of any girl in the state all season. Aurora Christian’s 4x200 meter relay team of Natasha Brown, Meghan Hagerty, Hope Montalbano and Becca Wert took third at the meet. In boys 1A competition, Theodore Hopkins of Leo Catholic High School in Chicago finished second in the 60 meter dash. Hopkins also ran for Leo’s 22

eric WaLLor
Running became Eric Wallor’s athletic focus in his junior year of high school and since then his focus has paid off. Wallor fought through wintery conditions and a hilly course at the March Madness Half Marathon in Cary on his way to a more than two-minute victory. Wallor trains and competes every year at a number of distances but says he concentrates on marathons. The Palatine resident traveled to Boston to compete in his first ever Boston Marathon in April where he aimed for a sub-2:24 finish. His preparation for Boston consisted of the win in Cary and the Bank of America Shamrock Shuffle 8K. Despite not feeling his best, Wallor set a personal record at that distance by 17 seconds and had the third fastest time of any Illinois runner. After Boston, Wallor says he will turn his focus to his next marathon, the Bank of America Chicago Marathon. He also hopes to qualify for the Olympic Marathon Trials in 2016.
Maria Lindberg
As a runner at York High School, Maria Lindberg set records and was a state champion. As a collegiate athlete at Boston College, she was a four-year AllAmerican. After taking some time off from running after the birth of her son, Lindberg has returned to the road with impressive numbers. Lindberg attacked the course at the March Madness Half Marathon and finished in second place. The 31-year-old then won The Race That’s Good For Life 5K in 17:24. Lindberg says she went out just to run her own race and it wasn’t until the race was over that she realized the gap she had put between her and the field. Both races come in training for her return to the marathon at the Christie Clinic Illinois Marathon in Champaign, where she hopes to PR with a sub-2:50 time. With a 15-month-old son, Lindberg often trains on the treadmill or takes him along in a stroller. Lindberg says she wouldn’t be able to return with the success she has had without the support of her husband, parents and in-laws.

They love what they do and love the kids but they also live their mission statement. Every person we’ve met and continue to meet is phenomenal.” Lauren credits running for Mercy Home as one of the things that helped her push through tough workouts, even when uncontrollable elements presented her with tough challenges. “It kept me going through every single training run,” Lauren says. “The 18 mile run, it rained the entire time. It was in the 50s or 60s, freezing cold rain the entire run. There are moments where you want to quit and say, ‘I’m done,’ but thinking about running for Mercy Home and the challenges and obstacles the kids who come out of there overcome: if they can live through those things and be positive, I can finish these last couple miles. It sounds very cliché, but it’s so true. You really have that in your mind as you’re going through.” Altogether, the Bells raised over $5,000 for Mercy Home through their charity running.

on doing it ever. I like to run, but I don’t love it. I’m not a fast runner. It’s nothing I excelled at, but I was looking for something new and different to challenge myself and thought, ‘What the heck?’”
“I kept thinking the whole time that if [my friend] could do it on vacation, I need to get off my lazy butt and do something for myself,” Jeff says. “I ran my first 5K that spring.”
Though it was Lauren’s first time taking on a marathon, Jeff, having run one before, found training to be familiar territory.
Jeff connected with Chicago Endurance Sports after his first 5K and quickly ramped up his mileage, completing a few half marathons and eventually running the LaSalle Bank Chicago Marathon in 2003. Lauren, looking for a new challenge, joined CES as well and trained with the group for a couple years. In 2004, Jeff began to take on new responsibilities at work and the Bells had their first child, leading to a nine-year hiatus from running. Instead of easing back into the sport in 2013, the Bells returned to the roads with the marathon. “We started up with [CES] again and I decided to do the marathon,” Lauren says. “I had never planned 26

“It’s been a lot like riding a bike in getting used to it and retraining my body but I’ve found in running, age has helped a lot,” Jeff says. “Having gone through the experience a decade ago and teaching myself the mental aspect and being more patient has helped a lot.” For the 2013 Bank of America Chicago Marathon, the Bells committed to raising funds for Mercy Home for Boys & Girls, a residential, aftercare, referral and community-based mentoring program for young men and women in Chicago. Both Lauren and Jeff felt strongly about Mercy Home’s mission and found it to be an ideal match for their desire to run for charity.
“It was really rewarding to do what we wanted and as a family get that in, but also know that we were able to help a great organization at the same time,” Jeff says. The Bells will once again don green singlets this fall as they take on the 2014 Bank of America Chicago Marathon as Mercy Home Heroes. “I have to say I had a very ideal experience [in 2013],” Lauren says. “I don’t know if I could do that with a second one, but I thought we’ll try and hopefully raise some more money for Mercy Home even if it doesn’t go quite as well.” In addition to running the Bank of America Chicago Marathon, Jeff also hopes to someday go beyond the 26.2 mile mark with a 50 mile race sometime before he turns 45 in 2016. In the mean time, though, both he and Lauren will focus on training for this year’s marathon: a goal Jeff says is attainable for anyone. “For people who are wanting to raise money but unsure of whether or not they can do a marathon, with the training CARA and CES provide, anybody can do it,” Jeff says. “Understanding how to do it: that has already been figured out. It’s just a method of working it. Having the groups to provide the motivation is so different than I’m sure it was 15 or 20 years ago. To that end, I think it’s something anyone can do if they budget the time to do it.”

Summer Youth Triathlon Preview If your kids are like mine, they love running, biking, swimming or a combination of all three. Kids also enjoy the challenge of navigating through all three of those sports plus transitions in a youth triathlon. Over the last decade, I’ve seen hundreds of kids do their first triathlon, and I would estimate 99 percent of them could not wait to do another. Triathlon can be a fun summer adventure for any kid, but as always, it is very important to follow a few guidelines to ensure a successful and happy experience. What is the right age and skill level? Most kids are ready to do their first triathlon once they are about 7 or older and possess the bike skills and swimming ability to navigate the course safely. Young cyclists must be able to mount and dismount their bikes easily and corner and brake competently. Wait until the training wheels are long gone before your kids start triathlons. Young swimmers should be able to swim 100-200 yards without fear. If you are considering a race with an open water swim, be sure to practice that first with your child. What equipment do we need? Your child will need swim goggles, bike shoes, a tunedup bike (fit for your child), a good bike helmet and running shoes. You may want to consider a running race belt which will make wearing the race number for the bike and run much easier than putting a t-shirt on over wet arms and head in transition. How do we find the right race? Look for a youth-specific race for young triathletes. Good youth-specific races should off er a safe course

with loads of course volunteers to keep the athletes on the right path. Youth-specific races also off er age appropriate distances. For young athletes aged 7-10, the swim should be 50-200 yards, the bike should be 2-4 miles and the run should be .25 miles to 1 km. For athletes 11 and older, swims should be 100-300 yards, bikes should be 4-8 miles and runs should be 1 km to 2 miles long. I recommend looking for USA Triathlon sanctioned races for good events, but my kids have also had some wonderful race experiences at races that are not USAT sanctioned. It is always good to ask around to fi nd out how safe and wellorganized a race has been in past years. Check out the online calendar at www.mychicagoathlete.com for options. The Tower Tri and the MMTT Youth Triathlon are two good races in May. More events are available in July and August. Splash and Dash events are USAT sanctioned swimrun races. These are fun swim-run sprints that don’t require the logistics of a bike course. Events will be held in Batavia, Oswego and Geneva (MMTT Splash and Dash) in June and July. For a complete list of Splash and Dash races, see http://www.usatriathlon. org/events/youth-aquathlon-series.aspx.

PreParing to Train The ImporTance of Base BuIldIng B y

In about five months, runners from around the world will descend on Chicago for the Bank of America Chicago Marathon. If you’ve been through this marathon thing before, you know exactly what that means: it’s time to build up your base before your training begins in earnest.
t h e
B a s i c
Buildin gB Base building is a six- to nine-week low-key version of actual marathon training. The specific routine varies depending on the experience level of the runner, but all have some commonalities. Foremost among them is to build up your base in a manner that staves off injuries and wear and tear. It’s a long journey to the start line of a marathon, and you want to take great care to have a healthy body when you arrive there. “You want nice, easy miles at a conversational pace [during the base-building period],” Ryan Caturan, the sports training program coordinator for Chicago Endurance Sports, says. “You really just want to get your activity level up—get your legs moving and your feet underneath you. You don’t necessarily have to worry too much about the number of miles you’re doing, and you want to avoid doing too many hard hill workouts. Your focus should be more on your feet. You want to get used to being on your feet quite a bit.”

How you move your feet, as well as the rest of your body, will go a long way in determining your readiness for official training. Longtime Chicago-area running coach Bill Leach stresses that focusing on developing efficient, fluid form in the base-building stage. “The most important thing is to get a core program in place, and the next-most-important thing is the correct running gait,” Leach, who has served as director of gait analysis for the Chicago Area Runners Association since 1999, says. “You’re not likely to become injured if you’re running in an efficient manner, and if you’re not running at a duration that causes you to become inefficient. “Someone might go out the door and run seven miles, but if their core is not strong enough yet and they’re generally not fit enough yet, then the efficiency goes down and the injury risk goes up dramatically. You want to incrementally increase mileage while also attending to the issue of gait.” Monotony can also become a factor, even in the earliest stages of preparing for a marathon. Meg Sullivan, the training program manager for CARA, recommends mixing up your workouts to keep things interesting. This might include entering the occasional 5K. 34

“A lot of people compete in races throughout their training,” Sullivan says. “For me, I do like to add one faster workout during the week, just to keep your legs fresh and not get bored, because at some point you’re going to have to really start ramping it up. It’s good to keep doing a little bit of speed work [during the early stages]. But if you’re starting from scratch, you just want a lot of easy running and easy mileage.” Cross training also figures into the base-building equation, and not simply to beat the boredom. These exercises range from low-weight, high-repetition weightlifting (such as squats) to swimming and biking. Yoga has also become popular because of the way it keeps the body limber. “A lot of runners don’t want to cross train—they don’t like it as much,” Sullivan says. “But I try to stress that even if you don’t feel like it, you should really hop on the bike once a week. It takes away from the pounding that running does to your body. Either that or take a complete day off. I’m a fan of yoga as well, and I would suggest doing it once or twice a week. Yoga helps for injury prevention and making sure you’re properly stretched. I’m really becoming more of a fan of cross training in general because it helps to prevent injuries.”
Base Building for everyone Marathons showcase runners of all experience levels. The same holds true for the training leading up to marathons. “You’re going to see basically every walk of life doing a marathon, especially with the Chicago Marathon, which is so popular,” Caturan says. “Training also varies from person to person. There are so many factors.” Below are some base-building tips for runners based on their weekly mileage outputs: 0–10 Miles These are typically people who have a sedentary lifestyle and are new to the marathon experience. If you’re at this level, Caturan suggests doing timed intervals for the first month, such as three minutes running/two minutes walking and then progressing to five minutes running/one minute walking. The running should be easy and conversational, while the walking should be brisk.
Adds Leach, “If someone is having a low tolerance to running, then cycling and swimming are good examples of activities where cardiovascular development can occur. They provide a reduced-load, reducedimpact workout.” Nevertheless, it stands to reason that racking up the running miles remains the key to base building. “There’s really nothing quite as effective as running for building up the base,” Leach says. The average person should aim to log between 20 and 25 miles per week during the base-building phase and should be able to do a six-mile run with relative ease. This will ensure that your body can withstand the rigors of your true training regimen, which will start around mid-June. “You don’t want to go full-out where you’re using 95 percent of your maximum heart rate,” Caturan says. “You really just want to work on form and efficiency, and you’re working on strengthening the entire body. Base building focuses on your overall core so that you have as injury-free a marathon training experience as possible.”
10–20 Miles These are also runners in the novice area, and the key remains to avoid injury risks. An interval of eight minutes running/one minute walking is recommended here. You’ll start at lower miles initially and gradually build up. Move at a reasonable pace; you want to feel like you could run another mile or two when you’ve finished a workout. 20–30 Miles More experienced runners—those who likely have participated in half or full marathons—work in this base-building zone. They’ll steadily increase their workouts and potentially be at 40 miles per week by official training. 30–40 Miles Hills and speedwork are part of the workout routine for these active runners. When they enter marathon training, they’ll have an extremely solid base and will transition right into hard workouts. MyChiCagoathlete.CoM

elite marathon runners often log 100 to 120 miles during peak training weeks: perfect when your job is to run day-in and day-out. But if the rest of us ran those massive miles, we’d likely find ourselves on the disabled list before we even had the chance to toe the start line at our target marathon. 36

Cross training allows runners of all abilities to reach their peak performance levels and helps ward off those pesky injuries that can often accompany marathon training. “Cross training is absolutely necessary for runners to stay healthy and run successfully for many years,” Meg sullivan, training program manager at the Chicago area Runners association, says. Why cross training aids runners depends on the method used, as each cross training option, whether it be swimming, using the elliptical or lifting weights, has its own set of benefits: strengthening bones and joints, firing slow-twitch and fast-twitch muscle fibers or being a low impact alternative to other forms of training. But the underlying factor is simple: cross training can make your running better.
“What athletes will ultimately get out of these types of training is less chance of injury, more leg—and body ‘core’—strength, power, and endurance to help the runner keep good form throughout the run, power and speed, as well as endurance to last through the whole race.”
— erik Marthaler
“What athletes will ultimately get out of these types of training is less chance of injury, more leg—and body ‘core’—strength, power, and endurance to help the runner keep good form throughout the run, power and speed, as well as endurance to last through the whole race,” erik Marthaler, personal trainer, triathlon and running coach and co-owner of lateral Fitness, says. Unfortunately, runners often wait to use this secret weapon in the marathon training arsenal until they’re injured. “i would encourage runners to plan cross training, such as biking, swimming and elliptical, into their schedule before they are hurting,” sullivan says. sullivan’s suggestion: cross train on easier training days. “Just aim to get the major running workouts in during the week,” she says. “For example, the runner should make sure they can complete the weekend long run, one speed workout and one tempo run. the rest of the week should be easy running and one day of cross training.” sometimes that’s easier said than done. to help encourage runners to complete their cross training, marathon training plans like CaRa’s emphasize the importance of non-running workouts. “CaRa coaches absolutely advise runners to cross train and we provide them with many opportunities and discounts to do so,” sullivan says. “We are determined to keep our runners safe, healthy and strong and so have been creating partnerships with places such as Corepower yoga, FlyWheel, aiR aerial Fitness and shred 415 among others. We want to keep our runners motivated and excited about training. everyone should switch things up a bit to keep training fun.” What one person finds fun may not entice another runner, but with cross training, there are plenty of options, even during the height of marathon training.

“These rides can actually be much more challenging than riding outside seeing as you can push yourself continuously with no interruptions,” Angela Park, a triathlon coach at Spark Multisport, says. Spin sessions increase fitness and anaerobic threshold, allowing you to run longer and faster. Cycling workouts also afford the opportunity to train your aerobic base, work muscles that don’t see much action when you’re running and get an intense workout without being too hard on the body. “Biking helps runners keep an endurance base and even work on speed while preventing too much pounding,” Sullivan says.
Yo gA
Yoga is a prime example of low-impact movement that won’t compromise recovery from that long run you had over the weekend, with benefits that go beyond stretching sore muscles and warding off injury. Yoga also teaches breathing techniques and focuses the mind: two practices useful on race day when you need your head and body to work together. “Yoga and strength training are two great ways to complement a marathoner’s training and offset any imbalances,” Sullivan says. Classes like Chicago Endurance Sports’ Yoga for Runners cater to runners’ needs and help to improve performance in sports as a result of increased flexibility, strength and mental focus.

Recently, Equinox partnered with UClA for a 12-week study that showed that Equinox’s three-cycle system—laying the foundation, balance and coordination and advanced training—worked. The study found increases in lean body mass, muscle strength, muscle power and Vo2 Max, all key components to improving fitness.
“When you’re strength training, you can do rotational movement, you can do frontal plane movement, lateral movement and side-toside movement,” Pezzullo says. “it’s going to make the body more well-rounded than just going in that forwards and backwards plane.” Where you are in your training program affects what kind of strength training you want to do. “At the beginning of the program it is best to add a lot more weight training,” Marthaler says. “Weight training helps strengthen the bones and joints, as well as burn calories and fat.” While weights will help fire the slow-twitch muscles, Marthaler likes to employ plyometrics—moves like jump squats, box jumps and speed skaters—to hit the fast-twitch muscle fibers and build muscular strength, endurance and power. “This is also a great way to work the heart as well as blood flow to the muscular system,” he says. “Building capillaries and working on blood flow to the muscles helps eliminate lactic acid buildup, helps from cramping from lack of oxygen to the muscles and even recover faster after a hard run.” Here’s where a personal trainer becomes invaluable. “Hiring a trainer or coach who knows about running and program design is also a smart investment to make sure the athlete has a successful and efficient race,” Marthaler says.
“Taking the client through these stages through something as simple as a squat will give them a great foundation, will decrease injuries and will increase strength,” Amanda Pezzullo, personal training manager at Equinox gold Coast, says.
Your trainer can keep you on your toes and hold you accountable, but finding a trainer who understands running can help you get the endurance, flexibility, increased stabilizer muscles and increased power you want to take your running to the next level.
increasing strength can also help you only improve your overall performance.
“We know that the strength training is going to be secondary to their runs,” Pezzullo says. “We want to do something that’s going to supplement it and make their runs more positive and make their runs easier for them versus tougher.”
“[Strength] often gets overlooked [during training] but is vital to speed, endurance and injury prevention,” Park says. 38
The strength training you can get working with a trainer can break running’s movement monotony, promoting balance and decreasing your chance of injury.

Chicago Quarter Marathon
Raider Run 5K
a p r i l 5 | pal o s he i ghts The Raider Run 5K saw a large age range in its top finishers on both the men’s and women’s side. The top ten of the two divisions saw an age differential of more than four decades ranging from pre-teen to Baby Boomers. Chicago’s Andrew Sutherland was able to hold of Matt Wagner despite Wagner being half Sutherland’s age. All told there were five finishers combined in the men’s and women’s top ten under the age of 15.
ap ril 5 | C hi Cag o The inaugural running of the Chicago Quarter Marathon offered runners a blend of the best parts of Chicago running along with a new twist offered at no other area race. The course was the unusual distance of 6.55 miles and ran along the Lake Michigan shoreline. Brandon Gittelman and Kristie Hawkins took the men’s and women’s titles in the first-year event.

TrAininG SiTe coorDinATor AT WATerfAll Glen foreST PreServe in DArien to know each other. I will call on runners who are now in their second year to tell the first timers how successful their first year was and why they are back for more. I will ask runners recently back from a race to talk about that and we always feature our “Charity Runner of the Week.” CARA partners with more than 60 charities. Charity runners are a pillar of marathoning and are a big reason the sport enjoys such widespread support (who else can effectively shut down large portions of a city and throngs come out and cheer?). Charity runners get the opportunity to address the group, explain which charity they are supporting and why. I will then forward by email a link to the runner’s fundraising page to everyone. After the run, there are always fluids and snacks that the groups take turns bringing out, which allows runners to get to know each other, even if they are not in the same pace group. When all that is over, I (and the other two or three Group Leaders handling water stops) pick up my water stop, bring it home, clean all the jugs, dry them out and put them away until next week. I get a little breakfast when I prepare the jugs and try to get a little lunch when I am putting them all away. Q When did you become the site coordinator? A I first ran with CARA’s marathon training pro-
gram in 2005. I was a volunteer Group Leader for a few years and then became the Site Coordinator in 2010. This will be my fifth year.
Jim Murphy
Q Do you usually train with the group at Darien, or do you run on your own? A Oh, yeah, I both train with the groups and run on my own. Like other Group Leaders I usually run with the same group but will fill in for others when a Group Leader is out sick or on vacation. As long as my usual group is covered by another Group Leader, sometimes I run with groups just to get to know the runners. I can’t remember all the names, but I try to get to know the runners.
Q Walk me through a typical Saturday morning during marathon training. What do you as the site coordinator for cArA’s Darien long runs? A The runs generally start at 7 a.m., but I am working by 5 a.m., checking emails to see if any Group Leaders will be out on short notice, calculating the wet bulb temperature to compare it to the heat and humidity safety guidelines, perhaps looking at weather radar for storms, grabbing a little to eat, making gallons of Gatorade, filling up jugs of ice water, loading up the SUV and setting up one of the water stops on the course all before getting to the start line by 6:30 or so. Two or three other Group Leaders are also getting
Q What do you enjoy the most about being a site coordinator? A Guiding runners through a tough training program, supporting them when they doubt themselves or falter and sharing in their joy when they conquer difficult goals. With perseverance, people can overcome what seem like impossible obstacles and accomplish amazing things. It is great to be there when they do so and rewarding to play a small role in their success. As I have learned in other contexts (swinging a hammer for Habitat for Humanity or tutoring a student in a struggling public school) many of life’s greatest pleasures come when you help others with no expectation of pay or reward. The bonus for me is that at the same time I stay in shape and get to run a few marathons a year.

their water stops set up on the course. I won’t be home most Saturdays until about 11 a.m. My SUV is the collection point for snacks runners have brought to share at the end of the run. A Group Leader from one of the fast groups will take the car key and set up the snacks because they will be the first group finished. Before the run I will have some short announcements on logistical or training topics, describe the course (how many miles, any turnaround points, etc.) and identify where the water stops and bathrooms are located.
