I

realize this opinion may make me unpopular with many in and around Chicago, but I’ve loved this year’s weather. As an enthusiastic lover of cool temperatures and equally enthusiastic hater of heat and humidity, nearly all of 2014 has catered exactly to my weather preferences. On one surprisingly-but-wonderfully crisp morning in July, I thought on my way to work, “It feels like it’s time for the marathon!” Of course, most of us preparing to run the Bank of America Chicago Marathon had yet to hit the halfway points in our training programs, but nevertheless the 60-degree morning couldn’t help but spark my excitement for October. And here we are! After months of training, 45,000 runners will fill the streets this month to take on one of the greatest endurance events in the area: the Bank of America Chicago Marathon. Watching the culmination of all that hard work inspires me every year, and personally, I can’t wait to get back out on the racecourse and take part in the event once again. If you plan to run the Bank of America Chicago Marathon this year as well, this issue has all the content you need to get excited for Oct. 12. From pages 34 to 48, we have your complete guide to the event with all the information you could want to know. With runner profiles, tips on spectating and calming your nerves and advice for making the most of your time in Chicago, you’ll definitely want to keep this guide on hand to make the most of your marathon experience. Feel free to stop by and say hi to Chicago Athlete at the Health and Fitness Expo and Participant Packet Pickup. We’d love to meet you!

Athlete Recovery Lounge Opens on North Side

A

s Brian and Robyn LaLonde moved forward in their endurance sports careers, progressing from cycling and triathlons to Ironmans and ultramarathons, they developed a passion for the industry. They also developed stubborn aches and pains. “We were always riding the line of injuries and seeking treatment, constantly scared of what was around the corner,” Robyn says. When researching professional athlete training methods, the LaLondes realized many pros had access to recovery tools amateurs would avoid due to prohibitive costs. To bring that arsenal to the masses, the LaLondes opened Edge Athlete Lounge. Edge, located at 1747 N. Elston, aims to provide a complete experience for everyday athletes. “We named it ‘Lounge’ for a reason,” Robyn says. “We have warm light and a big fireplace. People want to spend time here. They come to recover and stay to work on their laptops.” Edge features state-of-the-art recovery tools, including RecoveryPump boots, cold and hot water therapy, electrical stimulation, handheld laser therapy and inhouse medical services, including physical therapy, sports chiropractic care and sports massage. 16

Beyond that, Edge also offers training options, including a Wahoo Kickr bike studio, Woodway treadmills and a group fitness area to work on functional movement. “We’re all about creating a well-rounded athlete,” Robyn says.

KIDS LEARN TO RUN WITHOUT INJURY

Those looking to take advantage of Edge’s off erings can either purchase a day pass, which allows access to the facility, or monthly memberships, which provides a host of opportunities including the ability to make reservations, warm up and cool down sessions at races where the Edge Mobile Athlete Lounge makes stops, free indoor parking and free coff ee.

Introducing children to running at a young age can set the stage for a lifetime of wellness and activity, but training programs should cater to a child’s unique needs. Pacing and injury recovery in particular take on a different significance for youngsters. Professional consultation can help children run and heal safely.

Athletes and the public looking for a bite to eat can stop in Edge’s café, which features Intelligentsia coffee, baked goods from Red Hen Bakery and catering by HandCut Foods. The local flavor featured in the café fits with Edge’s overall mindset.

ILLINOIS TRIATHLETES PERFORM WELL AT NATIONALS

“We want to keep it as local and micro as possible,” Robyn says. “It’s integral to who we see Edge being.” For more information on Edge, visit www.edgeathletelounge.com.

The nation’s top age group triathletes competed in August at the USA Triathlon Age Group National Championships. Jennifer Garrison of Naperville won the 35-39 International distance age group. Elizabeth Brackett of Chicago, David Roadhouse of Wilmette, Graciela Val of Evanston and Bob Scott of Naperville also won their individual age groups.

Women-Focused Athletic Boutique opens in oak park

L

ively Running, one of the newest local specialty stores geared specifically towards women, opened its doors in Oak Park this past summer, combining boutique shopping with athletic gear. “We’re more towards Anthropologie than your typical athletic store,” co-owner Kate Pezalla says. Pezalla and her sister Anne, who also co-owns the store, grew up in Oak Park and wanted to bring a women’s-specific athletic store to the town that fit the area’s commitment to supporting small businesses. In addition to being its own independent business, the store features products from smaller companies and boutique brands to provide shoppers with alternatives to what they may usually find in bigger stores. While Lively focuses on apparel, customers can also find accessories including shoes from Newton, On Running, Hoka One One, Pearl Izumi, Altra and Merrell along with fuel, foam rollers and yoga mats at the store.

Lively works to make its shopping experience inclusive to all women, and to that end features a play space for children with a rug, coloring books and crayons to make shopping simple for moms. “A key part of our mission is that we’re family friendly,” Pezalla says. “We want moms to feel welcome shopping here. They can bring their kids in, put them in the play area and shop with their hands totally free.” The store also hosts weekly Thursday night fun runs at 7 p.m. and hopes to add more recurring events as time goes on. Both Kate and Anne hold RRCA running coach certifications as well, making them a convenient resource for local runners with questions about training. Lively Running is located at 109 N. Oak Park Ave. in Oak Park. For more information on the store, visit www.livelyrunning.com, and to stay up to date on Lively’s events, visit www.facebook.com/livelyrunning.

Better Boys Foundation Receives cycle Kids Grant The Better Boys Foundation, a North Lawndale-based organization that aims to provide youth and their families with experiences that enhance emotional, social, academic and career development, recently received the Fit Kids are Happy Kids National Grant from CYCLE Kids. The grant provides a CYCLE Kids program to organizations unable to purchase the program outright to help educate students on bike skills, safety and nutrition. “I am overjoyed to kick off a CYCLE Kids program at the Better Boys Foundation in Chicago,” CYCLE KIDS founder and executive director Julianne Idlet said in a press release. “It’s very exciting to see such enthusiasm from the community and I’m thrilled to add them to the CYCLE Kids family.” CYCLE Kids partnered with Johnny Sprockets to implement the program, which uses bicycles as a way of teaching children and their families how to adopt healthy and active lifestyles. The curriculum teaches riding skills, bike maintenance and road safety in addition to providing practical nutritional skills, including portion control and meal balancing. 18

equinox’s gold Coast and loop locations recently began to offer Precision Running classes, a treadmill-based workout that combines speed, incline and recovery to increase strength and fitness. Precision Running classes use the Balanced interval training experience developed by running coach David Siik to train runners of all abilities, which he describes as a balanced version of high intensity interval training. “you still get the same burn with less impact on the body,” Siik says. “When you do hiit, those max sprints and incline put force on your body. this softens that impact found on bigger speed and inclines.” the hour-long class features movement prep and ramp up/run periods followed by 30-40 minutes of the precision run intervals. Class concludes with a brief core work session. “Fully realized, it’s like track practice,” Siik, a former collegiate 800-meter runner, says. though the class tends to attract fitness runners, Siik says competitive runners, particularly those that focus on shorter distance races such as 5Ks and 10Ks, benefit from the work as well due to its interval-training format. Precision Running classes take place at equinox gold Coast, 900 N. Michigan, on tuesdays, thursdays and Saturdays, while the classes take place at equinox the loop, 200 W. Monroe, on Mondays, tuesdays and thursdays. a complete class schedule can be found at www. equinox.com.

ClassPass

laUnChes In ChICago Market The local fitness market has seen a boom in boutique and studio gyms recently, with locations popping up all around the city that offer everything from boot camp to barre workouts. With so many options, the cost of trying out different workouts can quickly add up over the course of a month. ClassPass, a startup based in New York City, seeks to solve that problem. “ClassPass is a monthly fitness membership program that lets you take classes across different studios and boutiques in your area,” Payal Kadakia, founder of ClassPass, says. “It lets you keep up the variety that people are seeking in a fitness routine.” For $99 a month, ClassPass members can visit attend unlimited classes at any studio within the ClassPass network, visiting each studio up to three times per month. Locally, over 40 studios participate in the ClassPass program, including Flywheel, The Dailey Method, Sweat on State and Moksha Yoga. “On average, these classes operate at 60 percent capacity,” Kadakia says. “We’re here to help them fill those spots and grow even bigger.”

Youtside Fitness Club

Introduces Unique Workout Concept in Chicago

C

hicagoans looking for a way to shake up their outdoor workouts have new option with Youtside Fitness Club, a year-round, outdoor-based fitness company that combines high intensity interval training and group exercises in an effective workout. Youtside, whose name combines “you” and “outside,” follows three primary principles: social fitness, variety and multiple levels. Partner and group exercises change with each class, and participants can choose among beginner, intermediate and advanced levels at any class. “So many people in Chicago go from their ‘work box’ to their ‘gym box’ and don’t get to take advantage of the beauty and motivation that outdoor workouts provide,” Patrick Kuehn, founder of Youtside, says. “By getting people out in the parks, the Youtside fitness formula takes full advantage of 20

the outdoors, caters to all fitness levels and, most of all, uses innovative group and partner exercises to make the workout fun.” Youtside currently meets on the south side of Lincoln Park (157 W. North Ave.), Montrose Beach, Oz Park and Wing Park in Elgin, with plans to expand to the western suburbs and the north side of Lincoln Park (330 W. Diversey). The full-body workouts last one hour and take place on varying days of the week at different times based on location. Class packages come in five- or 10-class bundles, four classes per month or one, three or six month unlimited packages. First time participants can try Youtside for free, though they will need to register online prior to the class. For more information on Youtside, visit youtsidefitness.com.

While some ClassPass members go on to join the studio they visited with ClassPass, Kadakia says the company particularly caters to those looking to mix up their workouts. “Eighty percent are variety seekers who want constant variety,” Kadakia says. “They just never had a tool to do it.”

ClassPass began its Chicago operation in September. To learn more about the program, visit classpass.com.

outdoor retailer Rei recently released its fall class schedule that provides local residents with a variety of ways to enjoy the natural resources available both within Cook County and a short drive away. Marathon Recovery

Y

ou finished the marathon! Now what? You’re likely sore and in pain. Walk backwards carefully down those steps with pride, but remember to recover properly. • Post-race, day 0: Drink water and start to take stock of how you feel. Commit to giving your body time to recover and heal. Notice what parts of your body hurt and to what degree on a scale from one to 10. Don’t just focus on your lower body. How are your shoulders, neck and hands? Write it down so you can track your recovery. Many people like to celebrate after a race, but alcohol consumption could disrupt a smooth recovery. • Day 1-2: Avoid any type of exercise, as your body is, in a sense, still exercising for 48 hours after the marathon. Continue to rest, get a massage, drink two to three liters of water, sleep more and eat lean protein like chicken or egg whites to help your muscles repair. Review your list from race day and make updates to the degree of soreness or pain you feel. • Day 3-7: Toward the end of the first week, if your soreness has significantly diminished, you can incorporate a light cross-training exercise. Swimming or light resistance training will help activate your muscles safely.

By PeteR StoePkeR

• Day 8-14: By the end of this week, you can start a light run. Novice runners should do no more than three or four runs. Start with an easy two miles and slowly build up to no more than eight miles at the end of the week while continuing to cross train. If you have soreness, pain or you fatigue more quickly, your body is still recovering. Pushing through the pain could lead to serious and long-lasting injury. • Day 15 and beyond: Now that you have let your body heal correctly, you can start thinking about your next race. Incorporate resistance training into your workout to improve performance. Running works the same muscles in same way. Resistance training helps keep the body in balance. Peter Stoepker is a coach at GhFitlab, with locations in Bucktown and Glenview. By tracking up to 40 measures for each client and incorporating the science of behavior change, GhFitlab creates a custom-tailored workout like no one else. “We have the most public green space in Cook County of any metro area,” Salus says. “the forest preserves have over 69,000 acres of green space where you can bike, paddle, run or play sports.” to help encourage Chicagoans to take advantage of these resources, Rei plans classes in areas where people may not immediately think to go, with classes such as backcountry navigation with a gPS and a fall colors hike designed for those 55 and older at the Palos Forest Preserve on oct. 5. another fall color hike open to all and a fall color outdoor photography class will take place at the Sag Valley Forest Preserve on oct. 11. “one thing people comment on often, especially when we get out to the Palos Forest Preserve, is that they can’t believe it exists, because it does feel like you’re out of Chicago and away,” Salus says. “it feels remote and in the woods.” For those looking for something a little more adventurous, Rei offers a hikes and hops class, where participants travel to Starved Rock and Matthiessen State Parks to explore the parks and cap off the day with dinner at a local establishment. Rei also has classes within the Chicago city limits, including educational courses on how to ride a bike at gompers Park and a kayak tour of the Chicago River.

PETER MONE

Peter Mone came to running later in life but since diving in has found his niche and has gone from casual runner to marathon runner to coach for Fleet Feet’s Boston Bound program. Mone has raced more this year than ever before. He had top ten finishes in both the BTN Big 10K and the Rock ‘n’ Roll Chicago Half Marathon in July along with two overall victories this year at the Waterfall Glen Xtreme 10 and the Chicago Spring 10K. Mone particularly likes races from 10 miles to a half marathon, but he tries to keep a variety in his schedule. After a busy spring and summer, Mone plans to focus on the Bank of America Chicago Marathon. Last year the Winnetka resident finished in 2:28 and hopes to beat that this year, shooting for a 2:25.

Paying it forward

“It was the first time I had ever gotten sick, but I kept going,” Pedroza says. “I had never pushed myself that hard before. It was a culmination of my college experience.” After college, Pedroza decided to conquer her fear of the marathon, once again in part thanks to the Big Shoulders Fund. “I signed up for the Bank of America Chicago Marathon in 2013,” Pedroza says. “I got the courage to sign up for a full marathon because Big Shoulders had a marathon fundraising team. It was their first year hosting a charity marathon team ever.” Big Shoulders marathon runners needed to raise $500 last year, and though Pedroza says she found that sum daunting at first, she far surpassed that goal, raising over $1,700 for the organization. Pedroza trained for the marathon with Viento, a running club Little Village, and the Chicago Area Runners Association, which provided her with help both during training with her 10:00 mile pace group and after an unexpected roadblock three weeks before the marathon when she developed tendinitis in her foot. “I felt defeated,” Pedroza says. “I felt I did everything right. The CARA trainers told me I could still do the marathon; I just couldn’t do anything else except the marathon.” Pedroza felt the support from her fellow running partners those few weeks like never before. “For people whom I see just once a week, I felt really brave and empowered,” Pedroza says. “I got so many emails of support from my CARA group.”

Gabriela Pedroza CharIty: Big ShoulderS Fund

By eMily Stone

Gabriela Pedroza came to running during her junior year of high school when she joined the track team at Saint Ignatius College Prep, a school she attended in part thanks to a scholarship she received through the Big Shoulders Fund, which works to support inner-city Chicago Catholic schools. as a Gallagher Scholar, Pedroza received financial aid from fifth through 12th grades that helped make Catholic education affordable.

Pedroza attended University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and decided to run the Christie Clinic Illinois Half marathon with no training leading up to race day despite having no formal racing experience.

“I thought I was going to be a star,” Pedroza says of her time on Saint Ignatius’s team. “I had hoped to be an awesome long-distance runner or sprinter, but my coach kindly recommended that I try shot put.” Though not thrilled about the event change at the time, Pedroza says she still takes pride in her strength at shot put.

After completing her first half marathon, which didn’t go as well as she had hoped, Pedroza looked into training programs. With the help of a structured plan, Pedroza shaved 30 minutes off her time the next year. Pedroza had a goal to beat two hours by her senior year of college and missed the time by just a few minutes.

“My first race ever was a 5K when I was in third or fourth grade, and I am pretty sure I walked the whole way,” Pedroza says.

Pedroza’s family also stood behind her in her training, even if the thought of her running a marathon seemed unthinkable to them at first. “When I told my mom I signed up for marathon, she was scared,” Pedroza says. “She couldn’t imagine a human running for 26.2 miles straight, but she quickly developed faith in me. She has always supported me, and even accepted all of the grocery list changes I made to ensure I was getting enough protein, calcium, all that good stuff.” Pedroza plans to run the Bank of America Chicago Marathon once again this month in support of the Big Shoulders Foundation.“My education was invaluable,” Pedroza says. “I need to pay it forward to Big Shoulders and hope to make some sort of an impact because of them and for them.”

Autumn Fall Treasure Hunting Fall has arrived and with it comes Chicago’s best weather with clear air and beautiful scenery. Chicago offers so many ways for families to enjoy autumn outside. Here are a just a few ideas. Forest Preserves and State Parks The many parks and forest preserves in our region each have elements that make them unique. Discover their features by exploring them one by one. Northeast Illinois has 18 state parks, ranging from Illinois Beach to Goose Lake Prairie to Chain O’Lakes to the Kankakee River State Park. Check out the DNR’s website (www.dnr.illinois.gov/recreation) for information on all of the state natural areas. Take a hike with a picnic, rent canoes, learn from a nature center, go fi shing, ride a trail and see some wildlife. Family adventures like these give our children critical outdoor time and result in wonderful memories. Orienteering If your family enjoys walking in the woods, you might want to add the challenge of participating in an orienteering meet with your kids. The Chicago Area Orienteering Club has a long history of hosting quality meets. Events cost about $10 and provide courses for beginner through advanced competitors with a free beginner’s clinic at each event. Kids love orienteering because it seems like a treasure hunt in the woods. Cyclocross If your child aged 10 or older loves leaping over obstacles and riding around trees, across grass and up hills, you might want to introduce them to cyclocross. The wildly popular Chicago Cross Cup starts on Sept. 28 at Caldwell Woods and goes weekly until the state championships at Montrose Harbor on Dec. 7. Check out www. chicrosscup.com for all information. Juniors race for free but must have a USA Cycling license (one day licenses are $15 and annual junior licenses are $35). Kids can race on mountain bikes or cross bikes. Good natured heckling is an honored tradition at cyclocross races but your kids will only hear encouraging cheers from the fun cross crowd.

BANK OF AMERICA CHICAGO MARATHON GUIDE

SPECTATOR GUIDE

VIEWING AREAS FOR BANK OF AMERICA CHICAGO MARATHON

BY EMILY STONE

THE BANK OF AMERICA CHICAGO MARATHON COURSE COVERS 29 NEIGHBORHOODS OVER 26.2 MILES, GIVING THE 1.7 MILLION SPECTATORS NUMEROUS OPTIONS FOR VIEWING THE EVENT. LOOKING FOR THE INSIDE SCOOP ON WHERE TO CATCH THE RACE? CHECK OUT THESE TIPS FROM AID STATION CAPTAINS ALONG THE COURSE. LAKEVIEW Lakeview showcases its diversity and energy each year for the Bank of America Chicago Marathon with three stages of entertainment featuring the R.O.T.C—the Righteously Outrageous Twirling Corps—drag dancers and (mostly) male cheerleaders coordinated by Frontrunners/Frontwalkers Chicago, an LGBT running/walking club. “The runners love it, as do the spectators,” David Reithoffer, Aid Station 5 captain from Chicago Frontrunners/Frontwalkers, says. “Some of the runners even stop to take photos and jump on stage. The whole area is energized.”

OLD TOWN “We refer to Old Town as the Fleet Feet neighborhood,” Mark Colpoys of Fleet Feet Sports Chicago and Aid Station 7 captain says. “Old Town is one of the louder spots on the course because of the spectators.” The Elvis impersonator, who sings, gives high fives, pumps up the crowd and encourages runners on North Avenue, makes an impression on runners and spectators in Old Town. In Old Town, spectators can see their runner twice on the course without having to walk more than a block. After cheering on participants as they run north on LaSalle, walk one block west and see them again around Mile 10.5 on Wells Street.

PILSEN Pilsen offers another classic Chicago neighborhood to watch the Bank of America Chicago Marathon. Some spectators come to Pilsen year after year for the mariachis, clowns, jugglers, Mexican Ballet or high school dance groups that participate every year.

“The camaraderie and energy of passing through the Mexican-American community is infectious,” Alicia Gonzales of Chicago Run and captain of Aid Station 15 says. “The majority of our volunteers are Mexican and we are so family-oriented that it is contagious. We really encourage all the runners and want them all to make it through; and that translates into how we support our runners and our volunteers.”

CHINATOWN Chinatown’s beautiful architecture makes it one of the most memorable locations on the course for many runners. “By the time the runners pass through the Gateway to Chinatown, two or three lions are dancing to celebrate and cheer,” Ricky Lam of the Chinese American Service League and Aid Station 17 captain says. Volunteers from the aid station play music, display signs and cheer on the runners. The atmosphere and excitement from the spectators, plus the runners knowing they are only a few miles from the finish line contribute to Chinatown’s unique marathon spectacle. Many spectators have their own special routes that they take each year. John Vance, a Chicagoan and longtime Bank of America Chicago Marathon participant and spectator chooses his route carefully. “I find watching the Marathon a very emotional and very motivating event and the spectators are really an important part,” Vance says.

“Dreams are realized and broken on that wonderful event called the Marathon.” He recommends three particular viewing locations: MILE 3, close to the Former Michael Jordan’s Restaurant (now Gino’s East) on the west side of LaSalle. “This area is not too crowded with spectators so you have a clear view of the action,” Vance says. “You get a good view of the elites and, because it is early in the race, there is not that long of a delay between the elites and the specific person for whom you are cheering. It is also a good landmark for your runner to look for you.” MILE 12 on the east side of Orleans Street, south of Hubbard and north of the Merchandise Mart. “Because of its proximity to LaSalle, it is a short walk from your last viewing area so you can see the elites at Mile 12 without needing to cross the line of runners,” Vance says. “This is one of the key parts of the race because your runner is starting to feel a little tired and you need to pump him or her up before they make that long run west on Adams and even longer run back east along Jackson.” MILE 23, north of US Cellular Field, east of the highway under the Metra tracks bridge. “Most people go to Chinatown because it is one “L” stop earlier, but I find Chinatown just too crowded and your runner can’t find you,” Vance says. “At this Mile 23 mark, your runner is tired and for some, this is the critical part of the race to achieving his or her time. While it’s fairly crowded, your runner can still find you and really needs your support for that last push.”

BANK OF AMERICA CHICAGO MARATHON GUIDE

FINDING YOUR RUNNER WITH 45,000 RUNNERS FILLING THE STREETS OF CHICAGO, FINDING A LOVED ONE ON AND OFF THE COURSE MAY FEEL LIKE LOOKING FOR A NEEDLE IN A NEON, SWEATY HAYSTACK. NEW TO THE ROLE OF CHEERLEADER OR MARATHONER? READ ON FOR TIPS TO MAKE MARATHON DAY A BREEZE! ON THE COURSE Have a plan. You know that carefully structured, meticulously followed plan that determined your every move for the past four months while training? Take that Type A approach and formulate a strategy for your spectators. Pick intersections or landmarks along the course and, using your expected pace, estimate a time when they can expect to see you at those locations. Know your outfit. You likely picked out your race day outfit well ahead of time to make sure it wouldn’t cause any undue discomfort on the run. Take a picture of yourself in your marathoning garb and send it to your fans, especially if they haven’t seen you before or after your long runs. Use technology. Encourage your spectators to take advantage of runner tracking options, such as texting, McDonald’s Runner Update Centers or the Bank of America Chicago Marathon app. If you plan to run with your phone, you could also consider using apps such as Glympse or the RoadID eCrumb feature, both of which allow those you choose to track your location in real time. Don’t panic. Seeing your spectators will give you a boost on the course, but place the burden on them to find you while running, not the other way around. You already have a monumental task: running 26.2 miles. You don’t need the added stress of finding a handful of your biggest fans among the estimated 1.7 million spectators lining the course.

OFF THE COURSE Have a plan. Before race day, talk to your fan club about reuniting. Many runners find their friends and families in the runner reunite area, located in Butler Field north of Jackson Drive between Columbus Drive and Lake Shore Drive. The runner reunite area includes signage that makes it easy to meet up. Consider alternatives. Do you have a common last name? Do you have a common first letter to your last name? You may want to pick a different letter by which to meet your friends and family after the race to avoid congestion. Consider alternative alternatives. While you can reunite on Butler Field, you don’t have to reunite there. Charities often have designated areas either in charity village or in close-by hotels, as do many training programs. If your charity or training program allows guests, consider meeting your party at that location. 36

MARATHONER’S GUIDE TO CHICAGO FOR THE OUT-OF-TOWNER

BY KATE BONGIOVANNI

YOU CAN HANDLE A 26.2-MILE TOUR AROUND CHICAGO, BUT YOU’RE LOST WHEN IT COMES TO FILLING IN THE REST OF YOUR MARATHON WEEKEND. WE’VE GOT YOUR BACK. Sifting your way through Chicago’s highlights, especially when you don’t have as much time for sightseeing as you usually would, may seem a little daunting. Where do I eat? What should I see? Where can I celebrate? You’ve got restaurants with options for whatever your palate craves. You’ve got the nightlife—for celebrating after you’ve run your marathon, of course. You’ve got the attractions from the historic buildings and museums to Navy Pier and the Magnificent Mile, where crowds flock regardless of the season. Have no fear. We’ll help take the guesswork out of everything to do in Chicago.

CARB ON Fueling up on starches before race day easily tops your mustdo list. Doing so is no problem in Chicago with perennial pasta favorites like Rosebud and Maggiano’s. Cross off two goals you might have marathon weekend—carbo-loading and hitting the city’s hottest restaurants—by snagging a reservation at RPM Italian, Nico Osteria, Piccolo Sogno or the recently renovated Spiaggia. After the race, when pasta and quinoa are the last foods you want to stuff into your stomach, go for a slice of Chicago-style pizza at Giordano’s or head over to Randolph Street’s restaurant row where you’ll find some of the city’s top tables. Or try River North’s Three Dots and a Dash, the tiki lounge serving tropical cocktails that make it easy to forget about those sore legs.

CELEBRATE The Bank of America Chicago Marathon technically ends once you cross the finish line, but the partying has only just begun. The 27th Mile Post-Race Party in Butler Field at Grant

Park is not only the area to reunite with your family and friends, but also where you can start celebrating your marathon accomplishment with beer, music and a soft spot to rest your tired legs. If you want to celebrate after you’ve had a chance to shower, stretch and maybe even snack, you don’t have to venture too far from the marathon’s start line. From a pre-race pep rally that typically happens the Thursday before to selling the official marathon merchandise including finisher gear, you can’t go wrong stopping at Nike Chicago (669 N. Michigan Ave.).

PLAY TOURIST Moving the body after an endurance event helps with recovery—it gets the blood flowing and kick-starts tissue repair— so if you’re not in rough shape, hobble around the city to see some of Chicago’s famous sights. Favorites include the Skydeck at Willis Tower; 360 Chicago, formerly known as the John Hancock Observatory, which recently opened the Tilt experience unlike any other city view; the Art Institute and the Field Museum; the Chicago Architecture Foundation River Cruise, which highlights several Chicago buildings; and Cloud Gate, the kidney-bean sculpture anchoring Millennium Park. And who wouldn’t want a medal-holding selfie by “The Bean”? You can’t get more Chicago than that.

CALMING YOUR PRE-MARATHON NERVES TOP TEN TIPS

BY COACH MARK BUCIAK, QCC

THE LAST WEEK OR TWO BEFORE THE MARATHON CAN BE THE MOST DIFFICULT PART OF TRAINING. THE MILES DECREASE DURING THE TAPER, BUT THE NERVES INCREASE. I STILL HAVE THESE FEELINGS EVEN AFTER COMPLETING 58 CAREER MARATHONS. THE FOLLOWING SUGGESTIONS MAY HELP YOU DEAL WITH PRE-RACE JITTERS.

MYCHICAGOATHLETE.COM

You can’t make up for lost time and miles at this point. Rest is key. Yes, you still should do some easy miles, but no more long runs. Enjoy your taper. You deserve it!

Do not try anything new in the last weeks before the race. This includes everything from your shoes, diet and clothes to what you consume before and during your runs.

If you’ve kept a running log, read through it. Remind yourself of all the hard work you have done. This will build up your confidence. If you have not kept one, start now by putting your thoughts in writing. Recap your key runs. This will help calm your nerves.

A massage can help you relax. Make sure you go to someone who has experience working with runners and book it for two to five days before the marathon. Schedule your appointment early to avoid conflicts during this busy time of year.

A gentle or beginner’s class is another way to relax.

Include several goals that you would like to accomplish, such as getting to the finish line safely and with a big smile on your face. Contemplate alternate time goals (“A” and “B”) to avoid unnecessary pressure that could negatively impact your race day performance.

PACK FOR MARATHON DAY.

8

GO TO THE EXPO ON FRIDAY.

9

PRE-RACE DINNER:

A week or ten days before the race, start thinking and gathering everything you need or might need for the event. Don’t wait until the day before to do this.

Friday is less crowded and more enjoyable than Saturday. Sleep in on Saturday and relax at home. Stay off your feet.

If possible, eat this meal at home. You can decide what to eat, but I will make two important suggestions. Have this meal about 3 p.m. on Saturday afternoon so that you will not be going to sleep on a full stomach. Remember that you’ll be waking up around 4 a.m. on Sunday. After your meal, go for a five- to 10-minute relaxed walk around the block. This helps digest the food and gives your mind some fresh air to relax.

10

PLAN HOW TO GET TO THE START LINE:

Don’t overlook this important piece of the puzzle, and don’t count on finding a taxi at 5 a.m. on Sunday morning. You could take the CTA, but I suggest that you ask your most dependable friend or a family member to drive you to the starting area and drop you off. Additionally, I will offer a free final tips seminar for the race on Monday, Sept. 29 from 7 to 8 p.m. at REI, 1466 N. Halsted. I look forward to seeing you on marathon day at the 13.2-mile mark near Old St. Pat’s Church. I will give a shout out: just run on the right side of the street and have your name on your shirt. Wishing you a safe and enjoyable marathon.

Mark Buciak (PB:2:30:25) is the coach and program director of THE ROAD TO BOSTON Training Program and Running Camps. Runners of all abilities are welcome at his year round program. Find more information and contact Coach Mark at theroadtoboston.info.

LAST MEN STANDING

THE EIGHT MEN WHO HAVE FINISHED EVERY CHICAGO MARATHON

BY MYLES DANNHAUSEN

JUST 4,200 RUNNERS CROSSED THE FIRST STARTING LINE OF THE THEN-MAYOR DALEY MARATHON IN 1977. ONLY HALF OF THEM FINISHED. IN THE 37 YEARS SINCE, THE BANK OF AMERICA CHICAGO MARATHON HAS HAD FIVE DIFFERENT NAMES, THREE SPONSORS, AND ONE CANCELLATION (1987, WHEN NOBODY STEPPED UP TO SPONSOR THE RACE). EIGHT MEN HAVE SEEN THEM ALL, AND THEY ALL EXPECT TO CROSS THE FINISH LINE FOR THE 37TH TIME ON OCT. 12. HERE’S A LOOK AT THE CHICAGO EIGHT. DANIEL SKRZYPCZYNSKI Lives in: Brighton Park | First Bank of America Chicago Marathon time: 4:20 | 2013 time: 10:18 | Best time: 3:04 Favorite marathon experience: Running the first with my brother Paul, hitting the 20-mile mark with my brother John, and when I was 60, walking the course with my daughter after having meniscus surgery in August. Advice for first-timers: Truly listen to your body and pay attention to what it’s telling you.

RON WILLIAMS Lives in: Downers Grove | First Bank of America Chicago Marathon time: 4:45 | 2013 time: 6:09 | Best time: 3:59:33 Favorite marathon experience: Running with my Team in Training teammates and my daughter Abby. What do you miss about the early years of the race? I could keep track of the number of female runners ahead of me. There were only six or seven then.

HENRY KOZLOWSKI Lives in: Wilmette | First Bank of America Chicago Marathon time: 5:02 | 2013 time: 5:19 | Best time: 3:50 Favorite marathon experience: My parents meeting me at the finish line after my first marathon. They were glad that I finished but they wondered if their son had gone soft in the head to subject himself to such an ordeal. Worst experience: My slowest was 5:51 in 1999, basically a fast limp after a fall off of a ladder. I wasn’t sure I would finish. How long will you keep running? I’d like to do at least 14 more to get to 50. Then I plan on running as long as I can. 44

OCTOBER 2014

MYCHICAGOATHLETE.COM

ANDREW PRAXMARER Lives in: Burr Ridge | First Bank of America Chicago Marathon time: 3:12:17 | 2013 time: 6:30:28 | Best time: 2:53:30 Worst experience: In 2007, the hot year. I told my wife at the 11 mile mark that I had never seen so many runners walking so early in the race. Is there anything you miss about the early days of the race? I miss some of my old running partners who hung up their running shoes. Favorite marathon experience: Running with my wife in her first marathon in 2004.

GEORGE MUELLER Lives in: Bloomingdale | First Bank of America Chicago Marathon time: 4:50 | 2013 time: 5:12:53 | Best time: 3:17 Advice for first-timers: Start slow. You already have your personal best in sight! What do you miss about the early years of the race? I miss the innocence of it all and feeling immortal. Favorite marathon experience: Seeing the finish line in 2007. I ran after breaking my leg and going through two months of home IV treatments. This was also the toughest year, as I finished and didn’t know it had closed because of the heat.

RANDY BURT Lives in: Antioch | First Bank of America Chicago Marathon time: 3:36 | 2013 time: 4:02 | Best time: 3:07 Favorite part of the course: Seeing my family on Halsted at Adams, and seeing my granddaughters at Halsted and Jackson usually brings a tear to my eye. Advice for first-timers: It is almost never too cold for a good marathon performance, but heat will rob you of your goals. How long will you keep running? At least the next 20 years. Favorite marathon experience: Seeing Steve Jones running in the opposite direction along Lake Shore Drive the year he set the world record (1984).

LARRY MOON Lives in: Chicago, near Millennium Park | First Bank of America Chicago Marathon time: 4:21 | 2013 time: 7:32 | Best time: 3:15 Worst experience: I believe it was the 1979 race that was extremely hot. I finished OK, but was then crawling on all fours, and I could not see. I was totally dehydrated, and no one ever came to my aid. I finally managed to reach a water station and hydrate myself. Advice for first-timers: Go through your marathon checklist the day before. Even pin your bib number on your shirt. When you grab water, crease the cup for easy drinking. Favorite memory: The first one. I had never run farther than 20 km and did all my training on the Chicago Park District cinder track at Chicago Ave. and Lake Shore Drive. The half mark and finish were both on Lake Shore Drive by Buckingham Fountain. I reached the half mark just in time to see Dan Cloeter, the winner, crossing the finish line! Seeing Cloeter inspired me to finish and to continue running to this day.

JOSEPH ANTONINI Lives in: Chicago | First Bank of America Chicago Marathon time: 4:05:58 | 2013 time: 10:18:12 | Best time: 3:36:19 Favorite part of the course: At my age, the finish line. What do you miss about the early years of the race? Back then it was run on the lakefront, which is beautiful. Today it’s enjoyable in a different way. Favorite memory: The first. Not knowing what to expect, not knowing if I was going to be able to finish it. Approaching Soldier Field on the running path there were people sitting or laying on both sides of the road, some resting, others ready to give up. Of those still on their feet most were walking or limping toward the finish. When we crossed the finish line, everybody was congratulating and hugging each other. MYCHICAGOATHLETE.COM

TATYANA MCFADDEN

SPINA BIFIDA DIDN’T STOP TATYANA MCFADDEN FROM BECOMING THE FIRST PERSON, ABLE-BODIED OR OTHERWISE, TO WIN FOUR MAJOR MARATHONS IN THE SAME YEAR. Born in St. Petersburg, Russia with an underdeveloped spinal cord and below-the-waist paralysis, McFadden grew up in an orphanage that could not afford a wheelchair for her. To get around, McFadden walked on her hands for the first six years of her life, developing early the strength she would later use in racing. Racing became a part of her life after she was adopted by Deborah McFadden, who worked as the commissioner of disabilities for the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. Deborah enrolled Tatyana, anemic and underweight, in youth sports groups, including the Bennet Blazers, a Baltimore-area program for physically challenged athletes. “It was just a way for me to gain strength and independence, to learn how to live life every day,” McFadden says. “But I really found a love for wheelchair racing and I knew that was something I wanted to do every day.”

McFadden took her passion to the Athens Paralympics at 15 as the youngest member ever on the U.S. team, where she won a silver medal in the 100 meters and a bronze in the 200 meters. She specialized in sprints at several other international competitions before her first marathon, the 2009 Bank of America Chicago Marathon. To her great surprise, she won the race. Her performance also earned her the nickname “Beast” after she climbed a hill near the end of the race to grab her first-place finish. “At first I thought it seemed a little masculine,” McFadden says with a laugh. “But [University of Illinois coach Adam Bleakney] said no, it’s what you are.” McFadden trains between two and four hours each day, usually over two sessions, and records more than 100 miles per week. As a student, she would often have a track training session at about 6 a.m., go to class, then train more in the afternoon before settling in to do homework.

TATYANA MCFADDEN

The rigorous schedule allowed her to set a new course record of 1:42:35 at the 2013 Bank of America Chicago Marathon, even while healing from a rib injury.

Schaer finished two seconds behind McFadden at the 2013 race, while McGrory came in 18 seconds after Schaer. The fourth-place finisher, Shirley Reilly, didn’t cross the line until about six and a half minutes later.

McFadden says she wants to place in the top three at this year’s race. “I hope to [decrease] my time, but it’s also a very strategic race,” she says. While the flat course at the Bank of America Chicago Marathon often yields fast times, weather can always present a challenge. McFadden says the race really comes down to the sprint. The arm power that earned McFadden her nickname makes the hill at the end of the course play to her strengths, but she expects tough competition from last year’s second-place finisher, Manuela Schaer of Switzerland, as well as her former teammate at the University of Illinois and 2013 third-place finisher Amanda McGrory.

McFadden recently graduated from the University of Illinois with a degree in human development and family studies. She’s also involved in charity as a lifetime member of the Girl Scouts of America and as a Paralympics supporter. McFadden says she enjoys how wheelchair racing allows her to help local sports programs for the physically challenged get up and running. “When I first started sports, I had no idea what the Paralympics were about,” she says. “Educating and helping programs get started could be a life-changer for someone.”

A T H L E T E

LINDSAY KNIGHT Age: 30 Category: 2 Team: Heritage Race Club Years racing cyclocross: 5 Favorite race venue: Anything hilly, single-track, muddy or preferably all three. Top goal for the 2014 season: More podiums than last year. How did you first hear about the sport of cyclocross? Five years ago I decided I really wanted to race road, and I joined a team in late July. Since I had no idea how or when the racing seasons worked (I missed the road season) I ended up competing in the relay cyclocross race and had an absolute blast and raced the entire CCC series that year. If you have a sporting or fitness background, what is it? I did gymnastics and soccer when I was younger, but took a hiatus from organized sports in high school. Starting in college, I had a bike for commuting and I also got really into yoga and running, but I kept getting stress fractures, so I turned to the bike more seriously when I started grad school. What was your biggest fear about getting into cyclocross? I was so afraid of coming in dead last—I almost backed out of doing my first race because of it. But then I realized that was silly and had an awesome time (…and did not come in dead last). How did you overcome this fear and learn from it? Talking myself out of excuses. For me, racing and training is mental, and I’ve found if I can shut off that fear-mongering part of my brain, then (mostly) all will be well. What is your motivation to race and train in less than ideal weather? I actually really like the structure and discipline that training provides, and knowing what I ‘have’ to do on any given day allows me to space out that day’s conditions during the workout. When it’s really horrid out, I just tell myself to suck it up and get on with it. How do you describe cyclocross to others that aren’t familiar with it? I describe CX as an off-road race on a road bike, which generally involves obstacles, running, and terrible weather. I’ve yet to convince any of my friends who were not already cyclists to try the sport.

What do you like most about cyclocross? Redlining for 45-50 minutes. There’s something kind of great about knowing exactly where your threshold is and then pushing yourself a bit past it for a not-so-comfortable time frame. Plus, I’m super-competitive and CX has been a much-needed outlet for me on that score. The people and mud are also pretty great.

ELLA NEUROHR Age: 14 Category: Women’s 4/Juniors 15-18 Team: Chicago Cuttin Crew Years Racing Cyclocross: 2 Favorite Race Venue: Montrose Harbor Top Goal for the 2014 Season: Get muddy. How did you first hear about the sport of cyclocross? My dad got me into cyclocross, as he does most things bike related in our house. If you have a sporting or fitness background, what is it? I swam for a few years, as well as running cross country, track and playing a little basketball and soccer. I had always done some bike racing, but started doing full cyclocross seasons two years ago. What was your biggest fear about getting into cyclocross? I was mostly afraid of the cold when I started. I love racing in the mud, snow and ice. Anything below 10 degrees isn’t quite my thing, but I’ve learned to deal with it. How did you overcome this fear and learn from it? Wear the right clothes. Other than that, there isn’t much to do, so just deal with it. What is your motivation to race and train in less than ideal weather? I actually love racing in bad weather. I love the mud and the snow as long as I’m not way too cold. It makes it more fun and technical, and you crash more.

What do you like most about cyclocross? I’m really excited to hang out and race with all of my friends this year. I’m also looking forward to being able to race twice a day, in both the juniors and women’s fields, for the first time. But most importantly, get muddy!

How do you describe cyclocross to others that aren’t familiar with it? It’s the best kind of bike racing. It’s in the grass, mud, dirt and snow. There’s technical stuff, like turns and icy parts, and fast straightaways. Sometimes you have to get off and carry your bike. The people are all so nice and supportive (plus they hand out candy while you race). Basically, it’s awesome.

Fall Shoe Guide RUGGERO LODA The fall season is, for many runners, personal best season. Whether you are looking to start running, increasing your mileage for a fall race, or in it for fun and fitness, running shoes coming out this season have one thing in common: they are lighter than ever. We have run in, and tested, most of the newest editions hitting the market this season. Here is a list of the models we strongly recommend to runners of all shapes, sizes and abilities. As always, if you have questions about the make and model that’s right for you, be sure and visit your local specialty running store for guidance.

FALL 2014

VALUE FALL 2014

CATEGORY: CUSHIONING WEIGHT: MEN’S 9.3 OZ | WOMEN’S 7.3 OZ. PRICE: $85 WWW.SKECHERS.COM

The Hoka One One Clifton is an all purpose running shoe that can be used for a variety of different runs. It combines an ultra-lightweight frame with maximum cushioning, delivering a shoe that is useful for both racing and training. The shoes feels very lightweight, and its rockered profile seemingly propels the runner forward. The Clifton is a good choice for (neutral) runners of all abilities and those looking for a shoe that has the comfort of a daily trainer but is also light enough for racing.

Asics’ popular high-end cushioned neutral trainer, the GEL-Nimbus, returns in a 16th version. The FluidRide midsole continues to provide exceptional cushioning while the updated Guidance Trusstic System provides a smooth transition. Increased gel has also been added to rearfoot to help further enhance the already smooth ride while providing a springy resiliency. The FluidFit upper has been altered to help better the overall fit from that of the preceding model. Wear testers enjoyed the ride that allowed them to comfortably log many miles right out of the box. Many were also pleasantly surprised at the shoe’s flexibility and reasonably quick transition.

CATEGORY: NEUTRAL WEIGHT: MEN’S 11 OZ. | WOMEN’S 9 OZ. PRICE: $100 WWW.NIKE.COM

CATEGORY: RACING WEIGHT: MEN’S 7.7 OZ. | WOMEN’S 6.5 OZ. PRICE: $140 WWW.ADIDAS.COM

The Mizuno Wave Sayonara 2 is a lightweight neutral offering for competitive runners racing the half marathon to marathon distance, or for recreational runners who enjoy a shoe that simply feels fast. The Wave Sayonara 2 provides adequate cushioning for long runs, but the firmness of the out-sole may be too rigid for runners used to a softer platform. Except for a few minor changes to the upper, Mizuno maintained the same package as the original Sayonara.

Lighter and faster than ever before, the Nike FALL 2014 Pegasus 31 celebrates one of the longest-standing shoe traditions in the industry. The soft upper will accommodate a wide variety of foot shapes, and the plush, neutral ride feels great on the road. Backed by the likes of Olympic Gold Medalist Mo Farah, this new installment to the Pegasus legacy is sure to please, whether this is your first pair or your thirty-first pair. FALL 2014

Adidas combines two of its most popular running shoe offerings into one great package with the Adios Boost 2. The Boost foam provides a protective ride for longer races and workouts, while the Adios platform maintains the speed and responsiveness of this original classic. Competitive runners will be pleased with the no-frills upper on top of the brand’s latest cushioning technology. The toe-box is a bit narrow, so runners with wider feet may need to size-up for maximum comfort.

FALL 2014

VALUE

While the Skechers GOrun Ultra - Extreme may FALL 2014 look bulky at first glance, this shoe, despite the high-volume cushioning underfoot, is actually quite light. Trending towards “maximalism” in the protection department, the shoe feels much lower to the ground than it seems and the ride is very pleasant. At home on the road or trail, the GOrun Ultra - Extreme features an all-weather upper that repels water and keeps the foot dry in wet conditions. While perhaps not optimal in warm weather, runners will appreciate this offering when the weather turns in the months ahead.

1600V2

CATEGORY: RACING WEIGHT: MEN’S 5.5 OZ. | WOMEN’S 4.6 OZ. PRICE: $110 WWW.NEWBALANCE.COM

The New Balance 1600v2 is a light, fast racing option for the 5K-10K distance all the way up to the marathon. The upper hugs the foot like a glove, and the ride is very responsive with enough heel cushioning to go the distance as one’s stride mechanics tend to deteriorate. Efficient runners may enjoy this shoe for road workouts and tempo runs, but the NB 1600v2 shines brightest for speed FALL 2014 training and race day.

The Brooks Ghost 7 continues to be an ideal shoe for the runner looking for a quality everyday neutral trainer with plenty of cushioning. The new version comes in slightly lighter than the previous model, however it still retains the overall cushioning that runners have come to expect from heel-to-toe. Brooks keeps things simple year after year, with the main enhancement for the Ghost 7 being the addition of the newly integrated Brooks BioMoGo DNA into the midsole. This allows for ample cushioning and a smooth ride without sacrificing responsiveness, stability or overall performance. The Ghost 7 is a perfect shoe for those runners looking for a shoe capable of handling the demands of higher mileage, yet is adaptable for smooth and fast training runs.

BTN Big 10K

Run for Walk

Chicago became center of the college sports world on this July weekend as the Big 10 conference invaded the lakefront. Runners from across the Midwest and East Coast showed their pride in their favorite schools with customized race shirts. While plenty of Chicagoans took part in the race, runners coming in from Hebron, Kentucky took the top spots in both the men’s and women’s division of the 10K.

With football season around the corner, Northwestern hosted its annual Run for Walk 4.1 mile race honoring the memory of former head football coach Randy Walker. This year’s inclusion on the CARA Runner’s Choice Circuit brought a deep and competitive field. The women-focused race offered runners a weekend’s worth of events in addition to just running, including an expo both before and after the race, recovery yoga and plenty of refreshments for everyone. While local runner Karrie Hamstra-Wright took the top overall spot in the half marathon, runners from across the country fill the top 10.

Chicago Triathlon

Au g u s t 2 3 - 2 4 | c h i cA g o

The course change this year helped opened up the competition and turned up the speed along the bike course. Although race director Scott Hutmacher acknowledges some nerves that came with all the changes, he says the race couldn’t have gone smoother. With this year’s success, Hutmacher said the race will continue with all of its changes in the years going forward and has no plans to return to the old course. The fan-friendly design allowed onlookers to take in more of the event then ever before. Hutmacher also says that changing the transition entry and racking process helped alleviate any waiting issues that may have caused problems in the past. With the success of this year, Hutmacher said he hopes to return the Chicago Triathlon to the top of the multisport world and compete every year with the likes of Kona and New York.

OccupATiOn: ChiCago Bears KiCKer

Q What sparked the idea to put on a run to benefit your charity, The Goulden Touch? A I am a huge believer in giving back and I think it is important to start teaching people at a young age its importance and impact. I can never give back to Chicago what this city has done for me.

Through the public charity, The Goulden Touch, we host signature events that are fun and engaging for participants that also give back to the local community. Gouldilocks and the Bears 5K family run/walk was sparked by my friend last year who owns TruCore Pilates as a way for us to create an active event in the northwestern suburbs that raises funds for one of our four Goulden Rules’ partners (Health & Wellness, Social Service, Medical Research and Education). Our partner beneficiary is 78

WITS, Working in the Schools, a 501(c)3 organization that promotes literacy and the love of reading among Chicago’s youth by providing one-on-one tutoring and mentoring to 2,600 students through the dedication of 1,900 volunteers. WITS delivers programs in 31 Chicago Public Schools where 90 percent or more of the students are from lowincome households.

Q What can runners expect at this year’s Gouldilocks and the Bears 5K? A Tons of fun and excitement. The run is filled with people of all ages, families (we have a Kids Dash too, which I also participate in), and Bears fans. Come dressed in your orange and blue or as your favorite book character. It is one of my favorite annual events that we host.

Q What was the inspiration behind this year’s race theme? A One of the Goulden Rules’ areas of giving of The Goulden Touch is education, which is extremely important to our board of directors and me. With our partner being WITS, we thought it would be fun and different to have runners either dress as their favorite book character, or they can come dressed in their orange and blue.

Q Do you consider yourself to be much of a runner? A I’d like to think of myself as a runner, but I don’t think I’ll be participating in the marathon this year! Q Any early-season predictions for what Bears fans can expect from the team this year? A They can expect a hard working team dedicated to trying to bring a Super Bowl title to Chicago.
