FORZA MUSICA : deel 2 ! Geen ander devies dan forza musica ! vat zo krachtig en franjeloos samen waar het KlaraFestival voor staat. Waarom het dan vervangen? Noemt u voor ons part het KlaraFestival 2009 forza musica II. En dat er nog veel mogen volgen. Aarzelen of anderszins langzaam aantrekken ligt ons niet: we vallen op de openingsdag met de deur in huis. Op stadspleinen en in trein- en metrostations krijgen bewust opgedaagde luisteraars zowel als argeloze passanten het betere werk voorgeschoteld. Ontdaan van de natuurlijke biotoop wordt goede muziek immers des te meer wat ze is: goede muziek. Zonder twijfel het sterkste argument dat tegen het KlaraFestival 2009 in stelling kan worden gebracht, is het verwijt van overvloed: maar liefst drie vaste afspraken per dag hebben we met u. Voor de avondconcerten worden de grote kanonnen bovengehaald die we in Studio 4 van Flagey en in de Henry Le Bœufzaal op u loslaten. Tijdens de lunch- en laatavondconcerten ontdekken we nieuwe talenten of laten we de grote kanonnen in een kleinere setting en in een intiemere sfeer horen. In ons programma van dit jaar ontwaart u twee krachtlijnen, op het eerste gezicht antipoden, maar zoals we u menen te kunnen tonen ook complementen. In het Verre Oosten hebben we veel fraais voor u gevonden, van traditie over kernrepertoire tot nieuwe muziek. Zweden dankt zijn prominente plaats in het programma, behalve aan zijn puike muzikantengild, aan zijn voorzitterschap van de Europese Unie, dat in september loopt. Tenslotte zochten we voor u de interessante combinatie, die nu eens koortsachtige confrontatie, dan weer vlekkeloze harmonie betekent. Klavierwonder Elisso Virsaladze met het jonge Aviv Quartet, Martha Argerich met Charles Dutoit, een ‘duel’ tussen Valery Gergiev en Esa-Pekka Salonen, Orphei Drängar, een der beste mannenkoren van de wereld, met Stravinsky’s Oedipus Rex, de Living Room Music in huiskamers versus de heel wat broeieriger Late Nights. Met het KlaraFestival kan het culturele seizoen in alle hevigheid losbarsten. Klara zendt ook dit jaar zonen en dochters uit opdat de luisteraar geen minuut van de concerten moet missen. Het middagconcert bieden we om 15 uur aan in Ludwig. Fred Brouwers is -noblesse obligeonze gastheer vanaf 19 uur en nadien pakken Lies Steppe en Bart Vanhoudt de late night-vreugde voor hun rekening. Het KlaraFestival betekent voor Klara twee weken lang live radio. Bovendien laat Rondas zich twee zondagen inspireren door Zweden en trekt Trio naar het Verre Oosten. FORZA MUSICA : deuxième ! On n’attendra pas la fin du KlaraFestival pour savoir de quel bois cette édition 2009 se chauffe. Il s’inaugure immédiatement dans les métros, les gares et les squares de Bruxelles, sous les yeux ébahis des navetteurs, soudain empêchés de métro-boulot-dodo. Cette édition garde intact son slogan – forza musica ! – comme pour dire que la musique est toujours la plus forte et sans doute la plus efficace contre la morosité, les replis identitaires et le train-train débilitant. Autant se dépayser lors de nos trois rendez-vous quotidiens ! entre l’Extrême-Orient d’où nous voulons vous faire parvenir les échos des traditions et de la création récente, et la Suède qui est à l’honneur à l’occasion de sa Présidence du Conseil de l’Union européenne. Les jeunes talents sont à l’honneur des concerts de midi et profitent de l’acoustique merveilleuse du Studio 1 de Flagey, notre partenaire tout feu tout flamme de cette édition, pour faire tout ce qui leur passe par les doigts. On y trouve aussi de grands formats comme Elisso Wirssaladze et l’Aviv Quartet qui pourraient aisément remplir le sublime Studio 4. C’est là, ou dans la grande Salle Henry Le Bœuf du Palais des Beaux-Arts, notre fidèle coéquipier, que le KlaraFestival donne toute sa mesure. Vous y sentirez toute la sève d’un Philharmonique de Séoul complètement rajeuni, des confrontations entre Chinois et Belges, entre Martha Argerich et Charles Dutoit, entre ensembles de musique contemporaine d’ici et de là-bas, entre Salonen et Gergiev. On y conclut même avec le meilleur chœur d’hommes du monde, l’Orphei Drängar, précipitant la fin d’Œdipe en même temps que celle du KlaraFestival. Mais on se saurait conclure sans une 7e édition du Living Room ni les Late Nights, qui sont la face nocturne des réjouissances. Avec le KlaraFestival, la saison culturelle démarre très fort ; avec Radio Klara, vous aurez du mal à vous boucher les oreilles ! A 15 heures, son programme Ludwig vous donne la réplique du concert de midi : de quoi vous secouer jusqu’à 19 heures. Fred Brouwers, célèbre présentateur mélomane du Nord, vous introduit aux directs du soir : le grand concert de 20 heures et la Late Night, à 22 heures, lovée dans les voix douces comme la nuit de Lies Steppe et Bart Vanhoudt. FORZA MUSICA : second movement! Once again the festival season is upon us, and once again KlaraFestival 2009 is already being heralded as a triumph. Its advent is being trumpeted throughout Brussels’ underground, stations and squares, rousing commuters from the torpor of their daily routine. This year’s festival retains the original slogan – forza musica ! – as a way of communicating just what a marvellously bracing antidote to self-absorbed isolation and the numbing daily routine music can be. This all goes to make a very welcome change of scene, as we transport you from the daily routine of commute-work-home to such far-flung realms as the Far East from whence we bring you a mix of traditional and modern music, and Sweden, which is currently celebrating 6 months of its presidency. Our lunchtime concerts will be showcasing fresh new talent, who will benefit from the marvellous acoustics of Studio 1 at Flagey, our red-hot partner for this season, to set aflame all that passes beneath their fingers. We will also be seeing more mature talent there such as Elisso Wirssaladze and the Aviv Quartet, who will be filling the fantastic Studio 4 with their sublime sounds. It is also here in Studio 4 and at the Salle Henry Le Bœuf at our partner the Palais des Beaux-Arts, that the KlaraFestival comes into its own. Here, the rejuvenated Seoul Philharmonic will really get the sap rising, China meets Belgium, Martha Argerich doubles up with Charles Dutoit, and contemporary music ensembles from around the world. There will be conductors such as Daniel Harding, Esa-Pekka Salonen, Valery Gergiev, Myung-Whun Chung & Muhai Tang. Finally, the best male choir in the world, the Orphei Drängar will bring us Orpheus’s tragic end to mark the triumphant climax of the KlaraFestival. However, the festival wouldn’t be complete without the 7th series of Living Room or Late Nights, the brightest of late-night celebrations. Live on Klara!

To open the cultural season with a fanfare, Klarafestival will be broadcast live on Radio Klara. The Ludwig programme brings you the lunchtime concert, which should keep you going until 7pm.. Fred Brouwers, the famous northern music-lover, introduces the evening’s live concert at 8pm, with the deliciously dark tones of Lies Steppe and Bart Vanhoudt taking you through the Late Night, from 10pm. There will be two weeks of live broadcasts, interspersed with Sunday broadcasts bringing you the sounds of Sweden (Rondas) and the Far East (Trio), the two guiding lights of this triumphant season. NL Het succes van de first night van vorig jaar was zo hartverwarmend dat we er een gelijkaardige lap op geven. Het recept: men neme een klassieke musicus en zette hem neer in een biotoop die de zijne niet is. Waardoor hijzelf des te meer wordt wat hij is: een klassieke musicus. Drie concerten van wereldformaat tussen 15.30 en 17.30 u zonder aankondiging of andere plichtpleging in de drie grote treinstations van Brussel, simultaan een tiental concerten in de centrale metrostations. Van 18 tot 19.30 u op drie andere openbare plaatsen. Opnieuw zullen pendelaars, als ze hun trein al niet missen, later aan de toog arriveren. Ontsnappen is geen optie. fr La last night de 2008 devient la first night de 2009, histoire pour les navetteurs qui transitent par le métro et les trois grandes gares bruxelloise de s’immerger directement dans l’esprit du KlaraFestival. Trois concerts de renommée internationale ! Katia Skanavi, Severin von Eckardstein et U Theatre ont accepté de troquer le concert hall pour le hall de gare avant de filer vers trois squares de la capitale. Une quinzaine de musiciens en tenue de soirée font de même dans les stations de métro. De la musique partout, authentique, généreuse, gratuite : c’est cela FORZA MUSICA ! uk This was a huge success at the two last festivals, both with musicians and audiences. On opening night, 15 concerts (classical, world and jazz) will take place in train and metro stations across Central Brussels. The three main stations – Midi, Central and North – will host three world-renowned pianists during rush hour from 3.30 to 5.30. Last year, commuters missed their trains to hear the music. The musicians dress formally, as they would in a concert hall, and say that the atmosphere is excitingly warm and spontaneous. mocht horen – allicht de meesten onder u – valt op deze eerste festivalavond te benijden. U ontdekt niet elke dag een musicus van dit kaliber. Zo begaafd dat Lipkind, kind van Russische emigranten, vrijgesteld werd van legerdienst, terwijl veel van zijn muzikale klasgenoten van de oorlog terugkeerden zonder armen, zonder handen. Worstelend met zijn verworven privilege kwam hij naar hier om incognito de Europese conservatoria aan te doen. Maar onbekend is hij niet gebleven, zijn naam weerklinkt wereldwijd (of hij wil of niet). Samen met pianist Roman Zaslavsky speelt hij Rachmaninovs opus 19, Sjostakovitsj’ cellosonate en een fantasie met fuga van Busoni.

FR Qu’il est parfois difficile d’être enfant prodige. Gavriel Lipkind par exemple, si doué qu’émigré en Israël, il est exempté d’office de service militaire et voit revenir de guerre ses condisciples musiciens sans bras, sans mains. Il s’exile en Europe, hantant incognito les conservatoires pour se prouver qu’il valait bien un traitement de faveur aussi exorbitant. Qu’il le veuille ou non, son nom doit éclater à la face du monde. Avec sa technique infaillible, ses traits de génie, son caractère ombrageux et libre, viscéralement, il ne peut échapper à lui-même. Et à nous non plus.

pluspunt is voor een jazzband. Met goed gevolg samenspelen met Dizzy Gillespie of Michael Brecker is dat natuurlijk wél. Tolvan Bigband staat voor puik ensemblespel op het scherp van de snee. En op z’n Zweeds: tolvan betekent twaalf en zou verwijzen naar het volume geestrijks dat de musici op het podium verzetten. Over de maat werd geen duidelijkheid verschaft.

The child of Russian émigrés, he was given a special exemption from military service because of his outstanding talent, a privilege that troubled him deeply for many years. Teaming up with pianist Roman Zaslavsky, he will be playing Rachmaninov’s technically demanding Sonata in G, op 19, Shostakovich’s lyrical Sonata for cello and piano and a Busoni fantasy and fugue.

cette édition du KlaraFestival se fait logiquement par une tête de pont : Taiwan. La fondatrice de l’U Theâtre, comme la plupart des pionniers du théâtre indépendant taiwanais, s’affichait il y a vingt ans comme un pur produit de la scène alternative occidentale. Il fallait donc à cette disciple de Godowsky d’apprendre à se connaître et s’éveiller à ellemême, c’est-à-dire à ses racines profondes, avec lesquelles elle renoue par la méditation et une recherche minutieuse des rites ancestraux. Ce qui frappe dans ces représentations, c’est l’impact extraordinaire des percussions – les tambours particulièrement, surnommés les « Batteurs de l’immobilité » – chorégraphiant l’espace sonore de leurs baguettes géantes. uk This 20-strong percussive theatre company is the cream of Taiwan, producing a mesmerising mixture of Kodo drumming, Buddhist meditation and Kung Fu. Their intensely physical show, Sound of the Ocean, traces the journey of a drop of water all the way to the ocean, and is staged by the company’s two artistic directors – master percussionist Huang Chi-Chun and Liu Ruo-Yu who has worked with the legendary Jerzy Grotowski. nl Pianowedstrijden zijn natuurlijk maar wat ze zijn, maar als je zoals de Koreaanse pianist Sunwook Kim uitgerekend de Clara Haskil-wedstrijd en die van Leeds wint, is dat veelzeggend. Nauwelijks achttien was hij. Ongelooflijk jong voor deze wedstrijden die, in tegenstelling tot nogal wat andere, meer om muziek dan om sport draaien. Behalve een kort hedendaags werk van Unsuk Chin speelt Kim Bartoks Derde Pianoconcerto, bijgestaan door Myung-Whun Chung en zijn Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra, een orkest van wereldformaat. Die laatsten nemen tenslotte Debussy’s poëtische symfonie La Mer en Ravels La Valse voor hun rekening. Repertoire dat Chung uitstekend ligt, getuige de bewondering die hij in Parijs oogstte, zowel bij het publiek van de Opéra de la Bastille als bij de grote Olivier Messiaen. FR Dès son arrivée en 2005, comme conseiller artistique,

Myung-Whun Chung (par ailleurs Directeur musical de l’Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France) a mis le premier orchestre de Corée du Sud sens dessus dessous. Réorganisé en fondation, il a remplacé 40% de ses effectifs par la crème des jeunes musiciens coréens et instauré une politique de résidence inaugurée par la compositrice Unsuk Chin. Du flair : elle a remporté le Grawemeyer Award (le Nobel des musiciens) et le Prix Arnold Schönberg. S’il vous présente aujourd’hui le pianiste SunWook Kim, ce n’est pas par hasard.

UK The electrifying Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra is one of the world’s leading orchestras and its chief conductor Myung-whun Chung was the darling of Paris opera-goers during his spell at Opéra Bastille. Olivier Messiaen dedicated his last piece to him as his most inspired interpreters. The orchestra’s soloist is Korean prodigy Sunwook Kim, the only pianist ever to have won top prize both at the Leeds and the Clara Haskil competitions. He’ll perform Bartok’s Third Piano Concerto, as well as a small and charming contemporary piece by Unsuk Chin. Ending with evergreen favourites Debussy’s la Mer and Ravel’s deconstruction of the Viennese waltz, la Valse.

NL Muhai Tang, allicht de meest vooraanstaande Chinese dirigent, leidt het Symfonieorkest van Vlaanderen in dit opmerkelijk programma waarin enkele moderne Aziatische werken tegen de Vier letzte Lieder van Richard Strauss worden afgezet. Het concerto voor suona (een oosters dubbelrietinstrument, verwant met onze hobo) en orkest van de in Brussel wonende componist Hao Fu Zhang krijgt zijn wereldpremière met Guo Yahzi als solist. Multistilist Tan Dun kent u misschien van zijn soundtrack voor ‘Crouching tiger, hidden dragon’, de succesfilm van Ang Lee. Hij tekent hier voor een werk met orkest, cellosolo en videoprojecties. Qilian Chen neemt de solopartij in Strauss’ liederen voor haar rekening. fr Un concert emblématique du KlaraFestival : ouvert sur

l’inconnu et fondamentalement antinationaliste. Qilian Chen est chinoise ? Et alors. Est-ce suffisant pour la priver du crépuscule de Strauss ? Anssi Karttunen est Européeen, cela ne l’empêche pas d’être le violoncelliste attitré de Tan Dun, oscarisé et « grammysé » pour sa bande-son de Tigre et Dragon d’Ang Lee. Après un concerto pour violoncelle en multimédia, goûtez le raffinement du suona, hautbois traditionnel chinois, par son maître incontesté et dans la création mondiale de Hao Fu Zhang qui fait sa révolution culturelle au Conservatoire de Bruxelles.

NL Jihye Lee is een Koreaanse jazz-zangeres die in Brussel woont en er onlangs een jazzprijs wegkaapte. Ze verzorgt deze late night met haar kwintet. Sfeervolle luister-jazz met een Koreaans vleugje. fr Mélange rafraîchissant de jazz américain et européen pour cette jeune coréenne. Elle vit en Belgique depuis sa victoire, en 2007, à la 3e édition du Brussels International Young Jazz Singers Competition, à l’Ancienne Belgique. Mais à bien écouter, on retrouvera chez Jihye Lee ses origines traditionnelles coréennes qui dépaysent ses propres standards. uk Sultry-toned Korean Jihye Lee sings jazz standards, accompanied by her quintet. uk The Flanders Symphony Orchestra has gone Asian under the baton of Muhai Tang, China’s best-known conductor. They’ll be premiering a concerto for suona (an oboe-like Chinese instrument) by Brussels-based Chinese composer Hao Fu Zhang. Hong Kong’s suona’s maestro Guo Yahzi will be the soloist. The next piece, for cello, orchestra and video projections, is by the multi-facetted composer Tan Dun. He was working as a New York taxi driver when film director Ang Lee asked him to compose the soundtrack for Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. International stardom was fast to follow. The evening will end with Richard Strauss’s poignant Vier Letzte Lieder, sung by the wonderful Qilian Chen. Who says it takes a Western singer to sing the German classics?

NL Xuefei Yang is heel erg mooi, maar dat is niet wat we u

eigenlijk wilden vertellen. Ze is een redelijk verbijsterende gitaarvirtuoze uit Peking, de eerste overigens die gitaar studeerde in het Westen. Zoals dat gaat met gitaristen, kiest ze voor een Spaans programma: Tarrega en Albeniz, met van deze laatste onder meer de cyclus ‘Asturia’. Waren we niet zo zeker dat u er zelf ook wel opkomt, we zouden zeggen: olé.

fr Cette guitariste chinoise n’est pas seulement jeune et jolie, elle a remporté des concours sur absolument tous les continents. Elle gratte même aujourd’hui les meilleurs guitaristes de sa génération. NL Ooit werden in Cremona de beste violen van de wereld

gemaakt, tegenwoordig maken ze er ook strijkkwartetten. Quartetto di Cremona is een internationaal gerenommeerd en gelauwerd ensemble dat ons in dit Haydn-jaar twee uitstekende kwartetten van de Weense meester voorzet: nr. 42, het eerste van de zogeheten Tost-kwartetten uit 1788, en nr. 66, het eerste van de Lobkowitz-kwartetten uit 1799. Mooie symmetrie, enigszins bedreigd door Stravinsky’s Grotesques.

nl Voor de tweede keer in deze editie komt het Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra, gespecialiseerd in traditioneel Chinees instrumentarium, aan het woord. Oude instrumenten worden in China niet alleen voor oude muziek gebruikt: op het programma staan twee werken van de hedendaagse operacomponist Guo Wenjing, Autumn Execution van Doming Lam en Yellow River Capriccio van Cheng Dazhao. Zijn uw spieren al bekomen van het avondje met U Theatre (30 augustus), kunt u zich hier in het gezelschap van prachtige musici aan het fijnere werk wagen: Yellow River Capriccio vraagt om rattle drums (van die tamboerijntjes met een steeltje en balletjes aan een touwtje, om het bij vier verkleinwoorden te houden) bespeeld door het publiek. Voor John Howards Five Studies is uw medewerking dan weer niet vereist. Nee echt, dankuwel, maar het hoeft niet. FR Après l’avoir entendu la veille en confrontation avec un orchestre occidental, le Hong-Kong Chinese Orchestra fait vrombir en solo ses 5 tonnes de percussions. En fait, tout l’instrumentarium de la Chine d’avant Mao. On y goûte toute la richesse et la diversité des harmonies, qui ne sont d’ailleurs pas si éloignées des nôtres. Sauf qu’elles s’expriment dans des nuances plus prononcées, plus douces ou plus percutantes, et dans le halo coloré de sa forêt de cuivres. Succulent !

nl Jan Lundgren is één van de bekendste jazzpianisten van Zweden. Hij kreeg een klassieke scholing, maar heeft het inmiddels al een leven lang meer op The Real Book begrepen. UK The Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra specialises in contemporary and classical Chinese music played on traditional Chinese instruments. Their charismatic conductor Yan Huichang isn’t averse to calling on audience participation. These highly skilled musicians display their versatility in two works by opera-writer Guo Wenjing, Doming Lam’s five-movement tone poem autumn execution and Cheng Dazhao’s Yellow river Capriccio that has the audience joining in on hand-held rattle drums. John Howard’s Five studies complete the programme.

NL Opnieuw een Belgische primeur: Sergej Kasprov, leer-

ling van de geweldige Alexej Loebimov, komt voor het eerst buiten Rusland om een concert te geven. Tegenwoordig kan dat, anders dan in Richters tijd, voor je vijftigste. Hoe dan ook, Kasprov is wel eens ‘de nieuwe Horowitz’ genoemd, dat is hysterisch jargon voor ‘hij heeft buitengewoon veel talent’. Kasprovs programma wijst alvast op een smaakvolle, gevoelige ziel: vijf sonates van Scarlatti en barokbewerkingen van Leopold Godowsky uit een bundel die hij om onopgehelderde redenen ‘Renaissance’ noemde.

NL We waren vast van plan om u Martha Argerich aan te kondigen zonder de adjectieven geniaal, wispelturig en legendarisch, maar zoals u ziet is dat alweer mislukt. Panache en hitsigheid achter een klavier: zoals Argerich is er maar één en vriend en vijand zijn het erover eens dat dat ruim voldoende is. Ze neemt samen met haar ex Charles Dutoit en het Royal Philharmonic Orchestra maar liefst twee klavierconcerti onder handen. Voor alle duidelijkheid: ook bij andere pianisten zijn de eerstelingen van Sjostakovitsj en Prokofjev aan de korte kant. Verder schaft de pot Enescu’s Rumanian Rhapsody. fr On ne présente plus la meilleure pianiste du monde, ou, pour rester sobre, la plus ébouriffante, truffant son jeu d’impulsions qu’elle décrit elle-même comme « un robinet grand ouvert, qui parfois déborde ». Double événement avec sa première exécution belge des Premiers concertos de Prokofiev et de Chostakovitch – de quoi épancher sous le mode ironique sa légendaire énergie. Et puis ce sont des retrouvailles avec son second mari, le chef Charles Dutoit, qui vient nous présenter son « nouveau » Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. Chaud devant.

NL Noriko Tujiko is Japanse, woont in Parijs en maakt daar animatiefilms. Mooi, horen wij u denken, al maakt dat haar nog niet geschikt om een concert te geven. Juist, maar dan moet u weten dat Tujiko ook graag ingenieuze soundscapes, samples en beats van Japanse cantilenen mag voorzien. Precies wat ze bij deze late night van plan is. fr Soirée très Lost in translation avec cette chanteuse et com-

positrice japonaise qui s’est aussi fait connaître comme une réalisatrice suffisamment hype pour se faire projeter par la Fondation Cartier (elle vit aujourd’hui près de Paris). Entre électro-pop et trip-hop, elle donne à sa musique répétitive quelques mélodies dépouillées. Atmosphère, atmosphère…

In zaal Ter Arken, een soort langwerpige kelder van het Paleis voor Schone Kunsten, worden het Timf Ensemble uit Korea en ons eigenste Ensemble Musiques Nouvelles tegenover elkaar opgesteld met het publiek ertussenin. De Koreanen spelen nieuw werk van Baudouin de Jaer en van de ooit in België residerende Maleisiër Kee Yong Chong, terwijl de Belgen nieuws van Lok Yin Tang en Japanner Atsuhiko Gondai brengen. Het hele zaakje is verstrengeld en wordt aan u voorgesteld als een soort Tuin der Auditieve Lusten, waarin u rondwandelt en ontdekt. Neergezeten, slechts het hoofd wendend waarheen de akoestische choreografie u leidt. I know an experiment when I see one!

uk Bozar has a long, white concert hall that KlaraFestival

is borrowing for an unusual musical experiment. At one end, the highly-respected Korean Timf Ensemble will play a new piece written for the zither-like kayagum by Belgium’s Baudouin de Jaer, a new piece by the Malaysian Kee Yong Chong and another by Korean cult composer Isang Yun; while at the other end of the room, Ensemble Musiques Nouvelles will play a special festival commission for string quartet and suona by Lok Yin Tang. Also prominently present will be the Japanese composer Atsuhiko Gondai, who studied at Ircam without loosing his sense of poetry. The audience will be in the middle, facing one way, then the other, guided by choreography. Hm.

NL Living Room Music is één van onze lievelingskindjes,

waarvan het grote succes ons minder verrast dan vertedert. Het idee: veel muziek hoort meer in een woonkamer dan in een concertzaal thuis, spéél haar dan ook in woonkamers. Dit jaar zijn het een vijftiental inwoners van Sint-PietersWoluwe die hun huis openstellen voor drie concertjes van een halfuur. Een kaartje geeft u recht op drie verschillende concerten waar u rustig naartoe wandelt. Een aanrader, al was het maar om hier en daar een verstokte cynicus het lang vergeten woord ‘gezellig’ uit de catacomben van zijn vocabularium te zien opdiepen.

Ici, pas de pression héroïque, pas de solitude avant ni après, rien que l’émotion, la liberté et l’énergie du partage. uk Living Room Music is a Klara Festival speciality. It’s so successful, they’ve patented it. Every year, 15 or so private home owners in one Brussels commune open their living rooms to very different kinds of concerts – classical, world and jazz. If a piano is needed and there isn’t one in the house, KlaraFestival rents one. Each musician or formation gives three half-hour-long concerts interrupted by halfhour breaks. The musicians love the informality and the warmth of it, and audiences can’t get enough of it. Tonight’s participating commune is Sint Pieters Woluwe/Woluwe St Pierre. You can buy a three-concert ticket and go from house to house.

NL Nog even over de gezelligheid van Living Room

Music. Laat die u niet afleiden van de muzikale kwaliteit. Niemand minder dan het pianotrio Parnassus palmt een van de woonkamers in daags voor dit zondagse lunchconcert. Op het programma: een ode van Peteris Vasks aan Olivier Messiaen, en een klaviertrio van Haydn, die precies twee eeuwen geleden het loodje legde. Tegen alle verwachtingen in, overigens, want nadat de krasse Wiener Bach had weten sterven, Mozart had zien komen en gaan, en ook nog eens van Beethovens Vijfde getuige was, leek hij niet van plan om Schönberg aan zijn neus te laten voorbijgaan.

fr Après Haydn, épinglons l’Episodi e canto perpetuo de Peteris Vasks. Ceux qui étaient au concert de l’Orchestre National, au KlaraFestival 2008, se souviennent des larmes qui provenait du public, plongé dans l’obscurité, lorsque un long lamento de Vasks était sorti d’un violoncelle, au beau milieu d’un orchestre en état de prostration. Même émotion à prévoir aujourd’hui, cette fois augmentée de l’effectif d’un excellent trio à clavier. uk Last year, the audience was moved to tears when Sol Gabetta played a poignant composition by cult Latvian composer Peteris Vasks. This time the Asian-German Parnassus Trio perform one of his works dedicated to Messiaen, along with Haydn’s Keyboard Trio in G. They’re going to Brussels a day early because they’re so keen to take part in the Living Room concert the day before.

G. Mahler Symphony n° 6

NL De Zesde Symfonie van Mahler is bijgenaamd de Tragische. Wees dus gewaarschuwd, want zelfs in de vrolijke Eerste en Vierde zijn Kommer en Kwel goed vertegenwoordigd. De bijnaam is niet officieel van Mahler zelf. Alleen bij de Weense première in 1907 stond ze zo geafficheerd, al beweerde dirigent Bruno Walter, Mahlers assitent, dat de meester haar zelf ‘mijn tragische’ noemde. Het mag raar lijken, want de Zesde ontstond net voor het grote onweer in Mahlers leven: dood van zijn dochtertje, ontslag bij de Weense opera, en het ene paar hoorns na het andere, hem opgezet door zijn al te begerenswaardige Alma. takes place in Kraainem commune. This is the event’s seventh edition: the musicians love it because it’s a much more informal experience than a concert on stage, and it gives them the chance to experiment with a more challenging repertoire.

direction pendant 13 ans de l’Opéra de Hollande – que le Symphonique de la Monnaie a confié son cycle Mahler jusqu’en 2011 (on fête en deux ans l’anniversaire de sa mort et de sa naissance). Un début des plus tragiques avec cette marche funèbre qui ouvre la 6e Symphonie. Trois coups du destin la referment, « le dernier abattant le héros tel un arbre ». Et dire que Mahler l’a écrite à la plus heureuse époque de sa vie.

composition he wrote shortly before the death of his daughter and the diagnosis of his heart condition, is among the great classical weepies. The Monnaie/De Munt Symphony Orchestra gives it their best under the baton of German conductor Hartmut Haenchen. Haenchen, who was born and trained in East Germany, is particularly respected for his interpretations of Richard Strauss, Wagner and Mahler.

NL Toegegeven, voor een festival met de roepnaam Forza

Musica! hebben we niet ontstellend veel Italianen in de aanbieding. Maar als we er hebben, zijn het niet de minsten. Over Aldo Ciccolini hiernaast meer, maar bij dit lunchconcert stellen we u de frisse veertiger Andrea Lucchesini voor. Adelbrieven: samenwerking met de beste orkesten, lieveling van niemand minder dan Luciano Berio. Lucchesini houdt het klein maar groots, met Scarlatti en Schubert.

fr Après l’avoir entendu en mars jouer Berio pour Ars Musica, son compositeur fétiche, Lucchesini nous donne toute l’envergure de son talent dans Schubert et Scarlatti. L’élève de Maria Tipo s’est invité au Berliner, au Concertgebouw ou au LSO. Il a joué sous la baguette d’Abbado, de Chailly, de Dutoit. C’est un chambriste courtisé. Normal qu’à 44 ans, on voie en lui un nouveau Pollini. uk The powerful sound of pianist Andrea Lucchesini, who worked closely with Berio for several years, is second only in Italy to the great Maurizio Pollini. nl Met het stijgen van de levensverwachting zullen we

aan het fenomeen der krasse knarren allicht snel wennen, maar oudjes van het kaliber van Aldo Ciccolini – hij speelde nog met Furtwängler! - zullen wel altijd zeldzaam blijven. Deze fenomenale pianist zet fysieke economie tegenover de hyperkinetica van de jonkies, wijsheid tegenover manifestatiedrang, doeltreffendheid tegenover snelheid, ontroering tegenover hormonale zenuwzwakheid, en kennis tegenover goede bedoelingen. Hij speelt deze keer Mozart, Satie en Chabrier, maar dat is gek genoeg niet zo heel belangrijk. Hij spéélt, en wie er de vorige keren bij was of de bevlogen commentaren hoorde, kan daarvoor slechts dankbaar zijn. Maar geen dank, we doen het graag.

FR Une petite lumière dans les ténèbres, dont l’intensité

n’aura fait que croître et miroiter comme un diamant pur… La prestation de Ciccolini, à 83 ans, en ouverture du KlaraFestival 2008, forçait le respect par sa puissance métaphysique. Sa présence est tout autant indispensable cette saison, d’autant qu’il rejoue Satie, sans doute métamorphosé depuis qu’il en a enregistré l’intégrale, et ses chères pièces du fantasque Chabrier. Et Mozart, comme le veut l’adage, que seuls peuvent jouer les très jeunes ou les très vieux pianistes.

nl Zo Knarr klinkt een beetje alsof de avond niet lang zal duren, maar naar verluidt valt dat nogal mee. Een zo niet gezonde, dan toch aanstekelijke mix van jazz, heavy metal en Duitse grondigheid. FR Avec son metal-jazz parfaitement assumé, ce groupe allemand se maintient en fusion pendant toute la durée de sa prestation. Ces Goths ne se prennent pas pour autant au sérieux. Brisant au passage quelques clichés germaniques, ils affirment encore un peu plus leur singularité sur la scène jazz internationale. UK Zo Knarr plays what is best described as teutonic heavy metal jazz. They’re extremely well known in their native Germany, but like a lot of jazz musicians, they don’t travel much beyond their borders.

UK One of the world’s great pianists, the 84-year-old Italian Aldo Ciccolini transcends his age with thrilling interpretations of everyone from Mussorgsky to Satie whose complete works he has recorded. Ciccolini – one of the rare pianists still alive to have worked with Wilhelm Furtwängler - was very much behind the Satie revival. Tonight he’ll be playing two Mozart sonatas - in D Major and B Major, as well as Pièces Pittoresques by France’s painterly Emmanuel Chabrier.

Grootse muziek met een grote boodschap. Dat is het idee achter het Baltic Sea Music Festival, dat in augustus 2009 voor de zevende keer in Stockholm wordt georganiseerd. Het brengt de beste musici rond de Baltische zee samen en toont hun engagement voor het behoud van het specifieke milieu rond deze regio. Het Zweedse Voorzitterschap van de EU, met het milieu én de Baltische regio hoog op zijn agenda, presenteert met trots de hoogtepunten van dit muzikale evenement in Brussel. Er staat ook nog fantastische Zweedse jazz op het menu, dankzij de samenwerking tussen het KlaraFestival en “Musik i Syd”. NL Lang naar uitgekeken en eindelijk is het zover: Elisso Virsaladze neemt als soliste aan de piano plaats voor Beethovens Vijfde concerto. De legendarische altist Yuri Bashmet – ‘God’ noemen zijn Russische collega’s hem met een knipoog, hijzelf knipoogt niet vaak – soleert dan weer in Kantcheli’s Liturgie ter herinnering aan een overleden vriend. Het Tallinn Philharmonic Orchestra staat onder leiding van zijn chef Andres Mustonen, zonder twijfel dé revelatie van de festivaleditie van vorig jaar. Mustonen houdt zich meestal met oude of hedendaagse muziek bezig, maar vandaag is hij dus romantisch gestemd: ook Beethovens Achtste staat op de rol – Beethovens anticipatie van discomuziek, dixit Glenn Gould. Mustonen weet er wel raad mee. fr Ce concert vaut autant pour ses interprètes que pour

son programme. Mustonen, violoniste inclassable, revient au KlaraFestival en chef et fait plaisir à Yuri Bashmet avec le Concerto pour alto de Kancheli, totalement bouleversant par ses réminiscences post-romantiques et son intense intériorité. L’Empereur ensuite par l’impératrice Virsaladze, et une Huitième symphonie du même Beethoven, à la Mustonen, hachée menu… mais de main de maître !

In zonder twijfel het meest vermetele programma van deze festivaleditie, wordt het symfonieorkest van de Zweedse radio beurtelings aangevoerd door twee van de meest prominente dirigenten van dit moment, tevens twee muziekdieren pur sang. Valery Gergiev neemt Tsjajkovski’s Vijfde voor zijn rekening, Esa-Pekka Salonen de Vijfde van Sibelius. Russen bij Russen, Finnen bij Finnen. For tonight’s concert, they will share the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra, giving the audience the chance to hear a first-rate orchestra working under two thoroughly different musicians. With Gergiev, they will perform Tchaikovsky’s unrelentingly tragic Fifth. After the intermission, Salonen will reveal another facet of the Swedish instrumentalists in Sibelius’s heroic Fifth that ends in a series of crashing chords.

Vakkennis, natuurlijk. Temperament, vanzelfsprekend. Maar dat vleugje extra dat Simon Rattle zowel als Claudio Abbado voor hem innam, maakt hem interessant. Hij mag vanavond alles uit de kast halen voor Verdi’s enorm Requiem, in al zijn operatische weelde slechts in naam een liturgisch werk. En tout cas, le trio électroacoustique Zodiak a fait forte impression l’an passé, furieusement rock mais sans sacrifier lyrisme et créativité sonore totale. Même mot d’ordre : im-pro-vi-ser ! UK This is Zodiak Trio’s second visit to the KlaraFestival, where their particular brand of teutonic heavy metal jazz went down extremely well. They’re top of the charts in their native Germany.

UK That old favourite – Verdi’s lavish requiem - is given the treatment by rock ’n’ roll conductor Daniel Harding and his Swedish Radio Orchestra and Choir. Simon Rattle’s onetime assistant may look the part of a rock musician - pale and slightly built - but he has a highly constructed musical intelligence and a great deal of finesse.

NL Een festival zonder barokmuziek organiseren: het

zou ons niet verbazen als men daar tegenwoordig voor vervolgd kan worden. We hebben weliswaar een beetje Scarlatti op piano gehad, maar de kans is klein dat we daarmee de jury kunnen paaien. Dus maar Ziv Braha gebeld, een puike luitist uit Israël. Hij laat zich bijstaan door een violiste - de Italiaans-Zwitserse baroqueuse Chiara Banchini - voor een rondje Bach en, HaHa, Haydn. Geen barokmens, maar je bent maar één keer tweehonderd jaar dood, toch?

Vervolgens gaan alle registers open voor het werk bij uitstek dat illustreert hoe ontoereikend woorden zoals ‘neoclassicisme’ zijn om Stravinski’s genie te vangen: het enorme, profane oratorium Oedipus Rex. Voor zo’n beroemd werk wordt het eigenlijk vrij zelden uitgevoerd. Een buitenkans dus, zeker in de wetenschap dat de beroemde Orphei Drängar aantreden voor de mannenkoorpartij.

UK You could call him a modern master of jazz piano. Bobo Stenson is undoubtedly Sweden’s biggest jazz export, who’s played with all the greats from Sonny Rollins to Don Cherry. He brings his regular musicians on drums, bass and piano. “My playing has become more simple and more precise,” he modestly declares.

UK The Swedish Radio Orchestra in a second concert with Esa-Pekka Salonen, this time conducting his own violin concerto, played by Canadian prodigy Leila Josefowicz. Among Stravinsky’s finest conductors, Salonen will then turn in a spectacular performance of the music drama Oedipus Rex, for which Jean Cocteau wrote the text that was translated into Latin. This will also be an occasion to display the talents of the world’s top male choir, Sweden’s Orphei Drängar. Based in Uppsala, they’ve been around since 1853.
