Paul B. Weiss Angel Investor, Entrepreneur, Leader...

In the warmth of our San Francisco Studio Paul Weiss walked in, looking dashing in his off-white blazer, yellow pocket square, matching socks and casual designer jeans, revealing a bespoke white dress shirt tailored for him on Savile Row, a shopping avenue in Mayfair, central London, famous for its traditional men’s bespoke tailoring.

His imposing presence, expertise and sharp looks has earned him the reputation of being a major reference among the entrepreneurial community in the Bay Area. Having lead over $4 billion of equipment portfolio and company purchases, he is among the most successful leasing fund managers in history in terms of capital raised.

After 20 years in the equipment leasing business, Paul was named by Leasing News one of the industry’s 25 most important lifetime dealmakers.

Today, Paul is a Principal at Panthera leasing and holds positions as Chairman of Wylan Capital, Pacific Rim Partners KK and Managing Director at the “AF” Accelerator, a program founded to accelerate the growth of qualifying technology start-ups in the consumer, fashion, and retail industries.

Similarly to most successful individuals, Paul’s outstanding success didn’t come without bumps on the road, however, his personal story is close to extraordinary. This is a man that always had the courage of his convictions. In 1987, he stood when the stock market crashed, and a wife only one month shy of giving birth to his first daughter, he decided to make a career change. You can tell, when he’s right, he knows he’s right! Only a man with a strong sense of self, faith in his own abilities and determination could possibly pull it off.

The Interview Hadi: In 1987, you had already started a career in investment banking when the stock market crashed and you decided to change paths... what was that process and experience like?

Paul: I didn’t decide to change paths, the decision was made for me because my firm was suddenly in trouble and investment banking was the world’s least useful skill in the late months of that year. It was hard to imagine that “paper” investments would be attractive for a while, and I lucked into a position in the financing and leasing of equipment, which felt in comparison to be a much more desirable type of investment. So of course the process was a bit shocking, going from full speed to full stop then trying to get back into gear on something new!

Hadi: Tell us about Panthera Leasing, when was it founded and what is it?

Paul:I stayed with the equipment leasing thing since I made that change in 1987, with some blocks of time off. Panthera was formed last year with the benefit of deep pockets and a lot of interesting deal flow. We lease equipment to large corporations, recently this has included railcars and commercial aircraft parts and related equipment.

Hadi: You have acquired equipment with an original value of $4 billion, what was that like? Is there a lot of pressure managing large amounts of assets?

Paul: In markets where the deal size is large, such as real estate or big equipment, these kinds of numbers are not uncommon.

My track record has been recognized a bit because it spans many different kinds of things in my industry, and almost all of these were on behalf of companies I co-owned or funds I comanaged. When doing deals large or small, the pressure is to absolutely do your homework and know your markets completely. It is never easy to do this, but having certain specialized areas of focus can be a great benefit. I found it all pretty straightforward; do your homework, then go back and recheck it twice.

Hadi: You are also an active member of the Keiretsu forum (world largest angel group), can you tell us more about the organization and your role in some of the programs they hold?

Paul: Randy Williams founded Keiretsu to bring group expertise to the otherwise “lonely” activity of angel investing in emerging stage companies. In scores of chapters domestically and abroad, Keiretsu brings some smart and monied people together with great young companies. I have invested in a few, gone on a slew of boards, and been lucky to be a regular mentor and resource to a bunch of companies that I have met. I am also lucky to be regularly invited to be a judge and panelist at JumpStart Days and PitchMeGreen, local events for entrepreneurs to pitch ideas and strengthen their positioning.

Hadi: Presently, you are the Managing Director at the AF accelerator, what is the purpose of the accelerator?

Paul: Fashion companies and technology companies with a fashion or retail context, have unique needs in today’s technology

focused market.We started the AF Accelerator this year to provide a unique Silicon Valley incubation experience for emerging companies in this space. It has been a very selective process but our first companies are about to begin in the Accelerator.

We have received attention from major brands worldwide, one of which we expect to be a co-founder. Apparently, there is a tremendous demand for this kind of service; the Bay Area has fantastic programs but they are general emphasis, and all of our companies see very specific things they need an accelerator to provide.to pitch ideas and strengthen their positioning.

Hadi: Your success is ,without a doubt, a result of hard work; what does a typical day in the office look like for you?

Paul: If it’s an office day I am making calls by 6:30 a.m. to grab the East Coast, at the gym most days in the 9 or 10 a.m. window, more phone meetings through the afternoon. Hopefully the late afternoon is creative work or a break. Later in the day, calls maybe to West Coast or Asia. If it’s a travel day, it could be meetings anywhere in the Bay Area or most any city...

Hadi: Tell us one aspect of your personality that you think played a major role in your success?

Paul: I sweat the small stuff. I don’t recommend sweating the small stuff, but I do, while not the healthiest philosophy it does tend to make the final work product pretty darn good. I think people notice and appreciate that.

Hadi: Do you have any siblings? If so, how many?

Paul: I have a younger sister who lives with her family in Palo Alto.

Hadi: Let’s talk fashion! Who is your favorite menswear or tie designer? And why?

Paul: I have yet to find a Zegna blazer that does not feel great and draw unsolicited praise when I have it on. People stop and ask me also about my Charvet ties, which don’t get to see the light of day as much as they used to!

Hadi: How would you describe your everyday style?

Paul: In San Francisco, 90 percent of business meetings are jeans appropriate, but for me that usually means a refined, upscale pair. Nice loafers, add one of my shirts (many of which are bespoke which I think makes a statement that’s important as to fit and quality), and one of those snappy blazers I referred to.These days a pocket square with is complementary, not matching, is my rule and I doubt you would find me without that.

Hadi: If you could give us an approximate number of cities you’ve visited, how much will it amount to?

Paul: Well, I have been to all of the lower “49” states and Canadian Provinces which seems like it would be about 60 cities, London Paris Tokyo and a few other European cities too, the Persian Gulf and Israel so all of their big cities as well, so let’s guess 75?

Hadi: To finish off, I have to ask…If you had to go back and change one thing in your career; what would it be?

Paul: Every low point and adverse event was a gateway to something else, without exception.This only became clear from the perspective of hindsight, it’s a priceless lesson. No changes for me thanks!

Your story in the US is unique. How did you make it to the Silicon Valley and become a hot commodity here?

I came to the US almost 18 years ago. I graduated from Moscow State University with a degree in theoretical physics, which wasn’t a great degree to make a decent living. I came to the US with $2K in savings and first lived in Chicago working on an H1B visa. In 6 months I decided to move to Silicon Valley where I saw the future of technology. On a 3 day trip from Chicago to Silicon Valley my car broke down in the middle of the Rocky Mountains.There was nothing, just cows and me. I didn’t even speak good English at the time. Eventually, I spent the rest of my cash to fix my car and arrived at the valley totally broke. 10 days later, I had my first job here. 6 months later, I founded my first start-up while experiencing all of the limitations of a work visa. Soon, my startup was bringing 10 times more money than my H1B salary.

and we saw a huge potential in it. We pivoted 99% from what we originally envisioned for Hive7, but eventually everyone got on board with it. We started developing the game Knighthood. We got to 1 million users in one month and many million users few months later.

You got to 6 million users, right?

We got to 6 millions on Knighthood alone and then we did additional portfolio games across all networks. We ended up with over 10 million players altogether.

In 2010 you sold the company to Playdom, now owned by Disney. Looking back, do you still consider this a success or do you with you kept the company longer?

I was outsourcing contracts from the US to Russia.

That was a dotcom period when an average price for developer’s work was $250 per hour here, but an average price for a Russian developer was $50 per month. However, few years later due to the dotcom crash, my company quickly downsized from $150K a month to 0, and I started looking for something new.

I consider it a moderate success. To pinpoint one thing that we didn’t do right at the time was our weak fundraising efforts.This is an important piece of advice: if you see a ‘hot’ market, do not let your caution or ingrained rationality stop you. Zynga really seized the opportunity then. Once Zynga leveraged their huge funding, our advantages started to disappear. We were looking for an exit since small social gaming studio wouldn’t survive on its own. You probably know about Zynga recent disastrous quarter and lack of growth in social gaming – all the issues that were obvious to us years ago are now coming to the public view. I’m glad that we got out in time.

After quitting your consulting business, you founded Hive7. How did you come up with the idea?

You touched a lot on trends in 2010.

One of my hobbies is competitive gaming. In 2003 there were first signs of interactive web apps appearing all over tech landscape, such as Google Maps and early experiments with AJAX. I noticed that the worlds of 3D virtual communities and the web are completely disconnected, but they had a lot to give to each other. Initially we developed AJAX virtual world. We received a lot of coverage in press, and Robert Scoble even called me a god of Javascript at the time. However, the two worlds didn’t blend as well as we had hoped…

Can you please clarify for our readers what AJAX is?

AJAX is one of the technologies that were cutting edge in 2005. Fundamentally, this is a technology behind Twitter and Facebook, and which makes many websites feel so ‘alive.’ That was a big thing 7 years ago. We thought we should build a whole community based on AJAX, not just static pages, but a community with avatars, chat and items.

How did Hive7 thrive?

One obvious trend is mobile. A rapid mobile growth is exciting and presents an opportunity, but it also poses a threat to the companies, which have been fundamentally web-based and now need to adjust their business to mobile to live and prosper mobile revolution.

For the new companies that are just starting now, should they start on mobile?

Make your business useful and relevant on mobile first and then think about web. If a company doesn’t make sense as a mobile experience, it will be hard for it to survive, since 5-10 years from now mobile will be everything.

10 years from now? It must be just two!

What’s next after mobile – are we going to fly to space or what are we going to do?

In sense of Silicon Valley trends, we’re going to see the revival of biotech and other non-computerized industries. I am an investor in one of the promising stealth biotech startups. In the future, we will see the intersections of industries, where a non-computerized industry will cross paths with software. One good example of this intersection is Uber.

You started Inporia, and your fashion application Kaleidoscope. Why did you make a step from a successful gaming industry into a bit risky fashion industry?

As ironic as it may sound, I see a lot in common between gaming and fashion industries. Why do people play social games? They play games to feel better about themselves, raise their self-esteem, and get additional energy. Fashion does the same - material products that it brings makes people feel more confident, while the emotional value of these goods has no correlation with their physical manufacturing. I did not like that in social games we were selling virtual goods without a real value.

We decided to apply the best practices from social gaming space to fashion and ecommerce.

Where can I find your app and what does it do?

nsky’s head With our app every day we send you the new fashion looks selected by our editors. It’s cross platform app – you can use it on the mobile, iPad, and web. You can simply download it or go to kalei.do. Every look is tagged with products it consists of. With few clicks you can buy any fashionable look you like in the app.

What do you think about fashion in Silicon Valley and fashion in startups? If the fashion is not there, should it be there?

I think that young hackers should pay more attention to fashion. Fundamentally, they need to understand the core concept of fashion, that it’s a way to change a way someone looks. If you understand the basics of fashion, you can easily create looks – formal, casual, playful casual, and so on. It’s like having control over your own image pixels. If guys in startup communities start thinking about

fashion in more technological and practical way, then they will find fashion much more interesting and exciting.

What about girls in startups and their fashion habits?

I think girls in startups really know what they are doing and they look great - all five of them whom I know (laughs).

I heard that you fly a plane, is that true?

That’s true and that’s actually how me and my co-founder met. We started flying planes together. Flying is a lot of fun and it’s very appealing to young entrepreneurs, since it’s very technical, very exciting and challenging to a degree. Also, many overestimate how expensive it is – it’s not, one lesson would cost you about the same as two good dinners out.

What advice would you like to give to your fellow hackers?

Spend some time studying fashion. It will get you girls. Keep hacking everything, including fashion!

What makes Anna, Gina, Tell us about your professions and what you ladies love about your jobs?

Anna: I’m the Chief Executive Officer of 4Sync (beta). 4Sync is a cloud storage provider. We are very excited about our launch this October at DEMO that will be held by VentureBeat.

Gina: I am the Vice President of Marketing at Canaan Partners, a global venture capital firm with $3 billion under management. We invest 60% in technology and 40% in healthcare startups. The best part of my job is working with the amazing entrepreneurs in our portfolio.

Which side of Canaan Partners is more exciting for you, tech or healthcare?

Gina: It has to be the tech side, mostly because I’m not allowed to say much about the healthcare side due to regulatory constraints. (laughs).

Lesya: Anna, how did you start working at 4Sync?

About a year ago, I was asked to help bring 4shared.com to the US market. 4shared is an Alexa 100 website and is the world’s largest file sharing application based in Kiev, Ukraine. Last year, 4shared.com released 4Sync (beta), which was a simple add-on that allowed people to sync with their 4shared.com account with their devices. I had a strong feeling about 4Sync and convinced 4shared to fund me to start operations here in the US, and I’ve been building 4sync (beta) in the US since January this year.

Lesya: What does number 4 mean in 4shared.com and 4Sync?

Anna: The concept originated from a word “for” (“for you”). We are the only cloud service provider solely focused on the consumer. We don’t work with enterprise; we want to focus on YOU.

Lesya: How does it feel to be one of only a few women in venture capital world?

Gina: I’m on the marketing side and not an investor, but I can attest that there are very few women in VC. Male or female though, there is camaraderie both within and between firms, as it often takes a syndicate of players to build a truly valuable company.

Lesya: Gina, do you meet a lot of female entrepreneurs?

Gina: We see some, and they tend to be exceptional – we have a number of amazing women CEOs in the portfolio.

Lesya: Anna, how does it feel to be a female entrepreneur in the Valley?

Anna: It’s especially hard to be a fashionable woman in the Valley. Sometimes, if you dress nice, you are not taken seriously. I think you need to go an extra mile and put those shoes on.

Gina: In terms of fashion, it can be tough to strike a balance in a predominantly male environment.You want to look nice without being distracting, and that’s a tough balance to strike. Men essentially get to wear a uniform every day -- a neutral pair of slacks and a blue shirt, and they’re done! A few years ago, I wanted to save time by having a girl version of the basic work uniform, so I became all about dresses. I call them my one-sies because they don’t leave much room for error -- piece zip it up, add a belt and heels and you’re done!

Lesya:What about you Anna? How do you dress for work?

Anna: I’m a little bit more edgy. I usually wear jeans, a t-shirt, a blazer, and I have to have my heels on.

Usually, I dress very casual since I need to be comfortable when I’m doing business. I don’t want to be restrained.

Lesya: Gina, what do you wear outside of work?

Gina: San Francisco is all about layers. You always leave the house with 5 shirts, 2 sweaters and a jacket that you peel off as the fog wears off and the day gets warmer… and then you put the layers put back on as the evening comes and chill sets in. I like everything to go with everything else so I don’t have a lot of color in my wardrobe. I look for neutral colors, simplicity and a nice cut.

Lesya:You mentioned colors! This summer has been so colorful. Have you added more color into your wardrobe?

Gina: I added some orange and green to my grey, brown and beige closet.

Lesya: Anna, what about you, do you like colors?

Anna: I like to throw a little bit of red into my life – the symbol of power, but I also like to stick to neutrals, like Gina. I like to spice it up with my shoes, but keep it very simple.

Gina: I’m over brands. Brands used to represent quality and craftsmanship, but too often fail to be anything other than a name. For me, the individual garment is what matters as well as the material, cut and the texture.

Also, the climate is mild, so there’s no need for the gloves and hats and other armor required in other climates. I don’t know if I can say that there is fashion here, but there are a lot of happy, comfortable people getting a lot done.

Anna: New York is my favorite city to go to. Here I am very casual, there I pull my Couture outfits. People here just don’t really care.

Gina: There is also this idea that you should be too busy to over-decorate yourself. If you have a choice between brushing your hair and sending one more email, techies tend to send one more email. The emphasis is on maximizing productivity.

Anna: if women dress really nice, people question whether they are working or looking in the mirror all the time.

Lesya:Which is your favorite city to shop in?

Gina: New York.The people who are fashionable are REALLY fashionable or very unique. I love shopping in Paris, too.

Anna: I love New York, and I love shopping in Florence for shoes in all the secret places that I know. I also shop online a lot.

Lesya: is there a fashion role model whom you find inspiring?

Anna: I try to stay as original as I can. My grandma who is very fashionable inspires me. I grew up in Moscow, and my grandma took me to the best museums and fashion spots. She also got me my first Louis Vuitton purse.

Gina: I wouldn’t say I have a role model for my style, but I tend to really like simple and classic clothes that are well-made and understated. Fashion is about standing out, but I prefer to blend in at the workplace.

Gina: Ellen J Custom Designs – she designs each piece for the individual client so they fit well and feel decadent. The lining on the jacket I have on tonight is spectacular.

Lesya: Anna, what is your favorite brand?

Anna: I actually don’t believe in brands either, but I do have a few favorites, such as 7forAllManKind, James Purse and True Religion. I definitely like Louis Vuitton too because it’s classic and French. I’m a big shoe fan so I like Yve Saint Laurent, Jimmy Choo, Manolo Blahnik, and so on! I like high quality garments. I don’t usually buy cheap garments, but I don’t believe in a $200 t-shirt either. It’s all about mixing and making an outfit work.You don’t need a Couture wardrobe, but a few pieces to invest in.

Lesya: I know you are collecting shoes. How many pairs of shoes do you have right now?

Anna: I have about 300 pairs of shoes. I keep them in my office, and cherish them! I loan them out to my friends.

Lesya:What do you ladies think about fashion in the Bay Area and Silicon Valley?

Gina: SF is all about comfort and mobility. People dress casually for work.

Lesya:What is Startup Monthly?

Yuri: It’s a startup accelerator. We are based in Silicon Valley and target local entrepreneurs, as well as Russian and Baltic regions.

What countries do you work with?

We have two centers in Moscow and in Vilnius.

We identify talented teams and bring them to Silicon Valley for two months. While working with them for two months, we cover various topics from customer development to launching their product/service. Our goal is to help these startups find early adopters and angel invertors.

Do you teach them English, too?

We don’t, but we have an English teacher. We bring young adults here so that they can change their mindset and think differently when developing their business.

Who are mentors and investors?

They are serial entrepreneurs and investors. For example, one of our mentors is a co-founder of TechCrunch Keith Teare. Mentors make keynote speeches and host 1-1 mentorship sessions.

Are you following a certain methodology?

We are using best practices of customer development by Steve Blank and lean startup methodology by Eric Reis, combined with our secret sauce.

Jetsetting, on Sails Aug 25, 2012 - The 34th America’s Cup is in full swing in San Francisco with team Oracle practically assured of the win with two boats from the team led by skippers Jimmy Spithill and Russell Coutts go head-to-head in the match-race final on Sunday the 26th.This will be second win for Team Oracle after winning the 33rd America;s cup and if Spithill comes out on top, it will be his second win as skipper. Though this time he is heads on against team and 4 time winner CEO Russel Coutts. BAYFashion had the opportunity to talk to Team Korea before the start of the event and also interview Brad Webb, who was Bowman in the 33rd Americas Cup winning Oracle team.

Its on a high speed sail boat. Going about 45 miles per hour. Sometimes almost hitting whales and sharks. Picking up a few gold medals on the way in the London Olympics. This is Team Korea for Americas cup. Yet they are not Korean. They love Hugo Boss and Armani when they are not sailing. If left up to them, they would wear jeans and a T-shirt at all times. Its hard to plan your outfits when you are in Sweden and getting sponsors flying you to Australia the next day.This is the new face of jetsetting. America’s Cup Race winning team member of the 33rd America’s Cup, Brad Webb is proud to represent Team Oracle. After doing 6 Americas Cup Campaigns for the last seventeen years, he touts winning America’s Cup as the biggest accomplishment of his life.

On average, he traveled through 15 Countries per year before settling down in San Francisco with his wife and child. Brad said it was rare to not have a boarding pass in his possession. He became a jetsetter at age 20 where he was paid to live a rich mans’ lifestyle by sailing the billionaires boats for them all over the World. St. Maarten and St. Tropei where the regular stops.

Still loving the travel and sailing, he now sails for Oracle and gets paid to wear his favorite watches (Tag Heuer). Brad Webb owns three homes, two in the Bay Area and one in New Zealand. His favorite past time is windsurfing and favorite designer (when he is not in his casualwear PUMA Team Oracle Gear) is Kenneth Cole.

The Dominican Republic is his number one vacation spot where he loves to travel with his wife. The balancing act between jetsetting and family life is ensuring that he carves out the time for his family at least one day or night per week. He has learned to say no to certain things to prioritize his family.

Stop Trying To Change Your Man!

onogamy. It’s a controversial word. Some believe it to be a natural instinct, others believe it to be an unnatural idea imposed by religion or morality. Studies have revealed that it may just come down to how a person is wired – some are naturally monogamous, and some are not. This leaves room for each type of person to be who they naturally are, without fear of judgment, and that’s a good thing; but what happens when two people are involved with each other, and one is monogamous and the other is not?

He goes by many names: Enter the Don Juan (Don Giovanni), the Lothario, the Libertine, Marquis de Sade, Ladies Man, the Player, the Smooth Talker, the PUA (Pick-Up Artist), the Alpha Male, and so on. Historically it was advantageous to a male of a certain societal status to seduce and potentially impregnate as many women as possible, so as to insure the continuance of his name (and DNA). Polygyny and polygamy were ways of increasing a population after wars, or of increasing a wealthy and powerful man’s stature and fame. This is still practiced in parts of the world today, for example one gentleman in Kenya married over 100 women during the course of his life, had 160 children, and divorced 85 of them before dying at the age of 94. Sounds exhausting!

In psychology there is an archetype known as the puer aeternus. This is the eternal boy, epitomized by Peter Pan. He might be good in his career or business, but when it comes to feelings, he avoids responsibility, commitment, change, and anything that might rob him of his cherished freedom. Really, and literally, he just wants to play.

Again I reiterate, there is nothing wrong with such a person, as long as the choice to be involved with him for a time does not carry with it the hope for more. If the woman is also of a similar nature, it can be a very comfortable arrangement, free of expectations and wishes and heartbreaks. I know some gentlemen of this type, and I could not say anything bad about them as men. In the past I have known the other kind as well, who will use this power that they consciously have and wield it as a tool to entice, and feed their ego. For that type, seducing a woman is like winning a business deal, winning a poker game, or any such self-serving accomplishment.

I should not fail to mention the sexual component. Sure, to some women, such a seemingly strong and worldly man is very exciting. Especially when he has kept that boyish quality in him and never outgrew it. Mix in the Alpha male qualities, a little evolutionary impulse, and it is not difficult to see why he may seem so attractive.There is more under the surface, however. For many women who find themselves drawn to such men repeatedly, there is within them a desire to save him, to raise him, to change him. And when he fails to deliver on the promises and hopes, as we knew he would, his boyish charm often elicits much forgiveness, as though the urge to make him into a monogamous man is greater even than the impulse to protect herself from inevitable loss and suffering, even after it has occurred multiple times already, and after all the warning signs are in place. So, is it reason enough to engage in such affairs, just for the brief supposed sparks that can happen? If your answer is yes, then you are not among the women who find such men maddening and frustrating.

Bottom line: if you are looking for a seri-

ous relationship with a man who will devote himself to you and give you far more excitement and love in the context of mutual trust and vulnerability than any one-night stand with James Bond can deliver, and for a much longer time, then consider that kind of man for yourself instead. You may not recognize him at first, likely because the desire to surrender to the fulfillment of a secret wish is for many at first stronger than the natural impulse to seek out one who is most suitable for you… someone who loves you and wants only you.

Our earliest experiences of love tend to fall into those archetypal patterns, until we learn to recognize them and break free of them. Sometimes, the only way to truly learn is from experience.

Ultimately, the things you want most from a man you will indeed truly find, but likely not in the package you expected. So, if you feel strongly about someone who you also know doesn’t treat you as you wish, ask yourself why you feel so strongly about them… could it be that they don’t require that vulnerability from you that you wish to experience (yet might also fear)? Which should you fear more?

When you find those answers, you will know begin to notice the ones you were missing all along…

FASHION OF FOOD When you can’t jet set to Brazil jet on over to instead

by Kelly Jackson For those of us who cannot jet set to Brazil for the weekend, but still crave that Brazilian vibe–there is an option. And it comes with a lot of steak. And salad. And Caiperinhas and handsome Brazilian waiters. A lot of handsome waiters (about 17). The service is attentive and the ubiquitous staff makes you feel like you are getting 5- star service for a 3- star price point.

Come to Espetus Churrascaria, where you can enjoy fourteen different styles of Brazilian steaks (I recommend focusing on the sirloin and the parmesan). Or you can sample chicken hearts, chicken wrapped in bacon, and shrimp in seemingly unlimited servings. Their Brazilian hospitality gives you unlimited buffets of salad, rice, beans, vegetables (a vegetarian will not feel unwelcomed here) and meat. I am not normally a buffet girl (I like fresh and organic which does not usually mean buffet) but this was very fresh and organic with 96

a wide array of options including artichoke hearts, hearts of palm, fresh hummus and guacamole. It becomes apparent why this restaurant has been successful for over nine years.

You just flip your table switch to green for go and red when you need a break.

Be ready when you keep it at green; it keeps coming. Although you are full after ten minutes, it is so moist and flavorful from their rotisserie that you seem to forget about that red switch. Or is that the handsome Brazilian waiter effect? I walked in on a rainy, foggy night in the middle of our San Francisco summer fantasizing about Rio...Craving a glass of Pinot Noir to go with my steak and warm me up, I was told instead to order the famous Caiperinha. Not wanting ice or a cold drink, I forced myself to agree. But three or four sips later, I was lost in the smooth, not overly sweet, very minty drink. It’s like a mojito but you can taste the alcohol.

Then onto the Brazilian martini – I chose both options: one with acai berry and one with passion fruit. They were smooth and delicious and made fresh with real fruit and juices. Even though I was fuller than full, I had to try a dessert. Their coconut mousse was so light and fluffy it deserved the last inch left in my stomach. I went home warm, happy, and humming the girl from Ipanema.

Hadi: How did you debut in modeling?

Chavis: My mom started my modeling career when i was about 6 years old, then the camera called me again after I started dancing in music videos back in my high school days.

Hadi: Tell us about the feeling when you first won the Mr. USA title?

Chavis: I felt happy but a little confused because I wasn’t sure- at the time, what it was all about, but eventually I was able to really use it to my advantage.

Hadi: Now, Mr. Top Model Intercontinental 2012, are you getting use to it?

Chavis: Yes, definitely and I’m looking out for the next title to take over!

Hadi:You recently relocated to San Francisco from New York. How was the transition like?

Chavis: Hard! San Francisco is much slower pace and is missing a lot of the fashion and personal style that you see in New York, but I’m determined to change that with my new company iCu Networking club!

Hadi: Indeed! I’ve heard the buzz, tell us about that, what you do when you are not posing for cameras?

Chavis: I’m the founder of iCu Networking club! For Fashionistas, Entrepreneurs, Creative and Artsy individuals, we do monthly mixers where we bring the fashion crowd together to meet and mingle. Our Motto is: Party with a purpose! I also have an event planning company and a model staffing company for events!

Chavis Aaron was born in Arizona,.

Youngest of two, he debuted his career as early as 6 years old with the backing of his mum. At 11, he moved to Atlanta, where he appeared in several music videos. The consecration came when he won his first title as Mr. USA 2011-2012, ever since, he’s been in the spotlight and not only is he the new Mr. Top Model Intercontinental 2012 , he is also the founder of a networking club called : iCu (I –See-You).

Hadi: You are appearing on our jetsetter issue so it’s only natural that I ask: where is the most exotic place you’ve ever shot?

Chavis: I’d have to say, the Dominican Republic and Peru, both are amazing and tropical.

Hadi: How would you describe your everyday style?

Chavis: Classic with a twist and Pop of different.

Hadi: What are three things you couldn’t leave your house without?

Chavis: my cell phone, business cards, and a good energy.

Hadi: What’s next in your modeling career?

Chavis: The takeover! Creating an empire similar to Diddy / Jlo and I hate to say it but I have to give props to Kim Kardashian (minus the x-rated video) – Laughs.

Aliya: Lisa, do you mind introducing yourself to our readers?

Lisa: I am a freelance makeup artist with a passion for editorial and high fashion makeup as well as giving my everyday clients the gift of feeling gorgeous. My background in makeup started at a young age when I was involved in theatre and acting.

I have traveled across the country to train with some of the best makeup artists in the industry such as Kandee Johnson and Emmy Award winning makeup artist Kevin James Bennett. Recently, I have worked on some amazing photo shoots in Paris and London and would love to continue working internationally.

Aliya: Define makeup in your words.

Lisa: I believe makeup should make people look more beautiful and feel more confident whether it is used as an artistic expression or to enhance features.

Aliya: Favorite Facial Feature in your subjects: Lisa: II truly believe the eyes are the windows to the soul.

Aliya: Favorite product and product line: Lisa: One of my favorite products is MAC Fluidline gel eyeliner in Blacktrack. It is smooth, long wearing and smudge proof. I love different brands for different reasons. Lately I have been really into Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics, their lip tars are great.

Aliya: What is Favorite tool in your makeup kit?

Lisa:My favorite tool is a fluffy dome eye shadow brush.It is great for blending.

Aliya: Any Beauty tip for our readers?

Lisa: love a good winged eyeliner look. Sometimes I use a business card or folded piece of paper to guide my eyeliner into a quick and perfect winged line.

Aliya: Future plans regarding makeup?

Lisa: I would like to work more in LA and New York as well as continue working internationally. Get signed with an agency, participate in fashion week in NYC or Paris and take my career as far as I could.
