Publisher’s Letter Notes

Welcome Home Explore your new area and discover why so many LOVE Whatcom County.

W

ELCOME! You’ve discovered

the most beautiful place in Washington state, at least from our point of view. Whatcom County is diverse in so many ways, from the beauty of the landscape to the people who live here. When you come to Whatcom County, you don’t come just to work, you come for a new and better lifestyle that balances work and play. You have come to the right place. Around every corner, you’ll discover why so many of us gravitated here. We come from all different backgrounds and from around the globe. Many just came to visit and ended up finding home, while others were born here and never wanted to leave. Others started their journey at Western Washington University and couldn’t bear the thought of leaving. Whatever the reason, and wherever your journey began, we’re glad you chose Whatcom County to be your new home. As you start to explore the area, be sure to make a trip into Fairhaven. This historic district is full of boutique shops and amazing restaurants, not to mention the South Bay Trail, which starts near Fairhaven Inn and leads all the way to Bellingham’s downtown core. On the way, visit Boulevard Park, or grab a latte from Woods Coffee and enjoy the sunset over Bellingham Bay. Downtown Bellingham is another destination full of history, charm, and plenty to do and see. Wander the streets, check out the eclectic shops, and find your new favorite restaurant. While you’re there, make sure to stop by the Whatcom Museum’s Lightcatcher building, a relatively new structure that is already an iconic landmark. Another

town treasure is Mount Baker Theatre. Many world-renowned productions stop here on their way from Seattle to Vancouver, meaning you get to experience global talent in an intimate atmosphere. It is not to be missed! Head north toward the Canadian border for stunning trails, hikes, clam digging, crabbing, epic sunsets, and oh…the food. Leaderblock Wine Co. in Ferndale has earned a Spectator of the Year award two years running, making it a must-visit. While you’re there, say hi to Amberleigh, she’ll welcome you with open arms and is the Sommelier who heads their wine collection and list. Next, find your way to Lynden, our charming Dutch town full of unique boutiques and restaurants. If you love antiquing, Lynden is a gold mine. Visit during the annual Raspberry Festival and get a first-hand taste of the area’s bountiful crops. Mountain lovers, simply drive east on Mt. Baker Highway to a little slice of alpine heaven. Whether you’re looking for world-class skiing, epic hikes among lakes and wildflowers, or just a beautiful bike ride through the forest, the Mt. Baker area has it all. For something gentler, take your pick of the Chuckanuts, Galbraith, or visit one of the county’s numerous parks. Wherever you go, and whatever city you are now calling home…welcome to the neighborhood! We look forward to meeting you and helping you settle in. Sincerely,

Lisa Karlberg President | Publisher

Welcome Guide 2021 11

Notes  Whatcom County Executive’s Letter

Dear Friends! Welcome to Whatcom County!

A

S THE HOMELAND of the

Lummi and Nooksack tribes, Whatcom County has been welcoming newcomers from across the Americas, Europe, Asia, and beyond for many generations. A little more than three decades ago, I too was a new resident, bringing my family from Canada to make a home near the town of Lynden. If you’ve decided to call this place home, then we already have something in common and share love for Whatcom County! I’d like to offer a couple pieces of advice as you settle in. First, stop by your local library and get a library card. Libraries are cradles of local culture and knowledge, and Whatcom County has some great ones with very helpful and friendly staff. They can point you to the local history section, where you can learn about the customs of the Coast Salish people, the outsized dreams of the first pioneers, or the cunning of local smugglers. Also, I’ve found that librarians can advise on much more than books — they’re always ready to share their favorite hikes, mustsee museums, and suggestions for what to do on a free afternoon. Second, set aside some time to explore not just your immediate neighborhood but also the wide array of destinations between Lummi Island and Point Roberts to the west and Mt. Baker and North Cascades National Park to the east. It’s well worth a special effort, and you’ll soon have a dozen outing options for every season and mood. As you may already know, this beautiful corner of the world offers incredible outdoor recreation opportunities — where else can you ski, cycle, and sail all on the same day? Even after half a lifetime here, I am still uncovering hidden gems! Third, discover Whatcom County’s bounty. We’re nationally known for our raspberries and are the number-two dairy producer in our state, but there’s much more than that. From farm fresh

12

Welcome-Whatcom.com

produce and artisan baked goods to our vibrant arts and music scene, you’ll have opportunities to satisfy your established tastes while also pushing your boundaries with new culinary and cultural experiences. Our small-scale, locally owned businesses contribute so much to the color and character of our communities, and I believe that patronizing them is our civic duty! Fourth, don’t forget to introduce yourself to your neighbors and, if you are so inclined, get involved! I think you’ll find that our community is friendly and welcoming. Consider joining a hobby club, service organization, or community group. There’s a wealth of opportunity for civic engagement! My own first steps into the public arena began with my involvement in a foundation to support my children’s schools. Perhaps you too will find something that provides personal enrichment while also giving back to your community. Finally, get to know your representatives in local government. While much attention is given to the goings-on in Washington DC, it’s your local public servants who are responsible for your roads and parks, schools and emergency services, and so much more. Speaking as County Executive, please know that County Government is here to serve you, and we are committed to being accessible, responsive, and transparent as we do the people’s business. I’m sure in a very short time you will begin to feel that this is a great new home and will be telling all your friends and family what we say — “I Love Whatcom!”

HATCOM COUNTY ENCOMPASSES several cities, towns,

and villages, each with its own unique attractions and charms. Explore your own neighborhood, then hop in the car and see what’s up the road. The biggest city is Bellingham, home to more than 90,000 people. Here you’ll find Western Washington University, one of the top universities in the state and one of the city’s largest employers. The downtown corridor and historic Fairhaven Village are both hubs for shopping, entertainment, and fine dining. With plenty of parks and recreation areas sprinkled throughout the city, there’s always something to do. Just outside Bellingham you’ll find Ferndale, the county’s thirdlargest town, and due north you’ll encounter Custer and Lynden. In the county’s northwest corner is the bordertown of Blaine, which contains the seaside village of Birch Bay. With two ports of entry, the area is a hub for international travel and activity. To the east are the Mount Baker Foothills, where you’ll find the towns of Deming, Maple Falls, and Glacier along Mount Baker Highway. Keep going up the highway and you’ll reach Artist Point, a nexus of trailheads with spectacular mountain views. Travelling north and south on State Route 9, you’ll encounter the towns of Sumas, Everson/Nooksack, and Acme. 

A

S THE LARGEST CITY IN WHATCOM COUNTY,

Bellingham is a nexus for shopping, dining, recreation, education, healthcare, culture, and so much more. The city’s history begins thousands of years ago, with the North Coast Indians. These Salish-speaking tribes lived near the coast, using the bay and rivers to fish. It wasn’t until the mid-1800s, during the gold rush, that four small towns emerged in earnest around the bay: Bellingham, Fairhaven, Whatcom, and Sehome. Decades later, in the early 1900s, the towns were consolidated into the city we now know as Bellingham. What was once a quiet community based on fishing, mining, and lumber is now a bustling college town home to roughly 90,000 people. Bellingham’s population has nearly doubled since 1980, and continues to grow faster than the state’s average. It’s no surprise the city has begun to attract people from all across the country; it’s been named one of the best places to live by Sunset Magazine, Outside Magazine, and Livability. Bellingham has also garnered attention for its clean air, bike culture, and safety. The city’s physical boundary is shaped by Bellingham Bay to the west and the North Cascade Mountains to the east. To the south lies Lake Whatcom, which supplies the city’s drinking water and offers various recreation opportunities. The city comprises more than 20 neighborhoods spanning roughly 30 square miles of land. Prominent neighborhoods include Barkley, Fairhaven, Lettered Streets, Columbia, Birchwood, Cordata, Sunnyland, and Sehome. 22

Welcome-Whatcom.com

When it comes to dining, entertainment, and shopping, head to Downtown Bellingham, the city’s nexus of commercial activity. Locally owned shops offer everything from boutique clothing to home decor and outdoor gear. The restaurant scene is equally eclectic, spanning price points and international cuisines. From fresh sushi to midnight Russian dumplings or Ethiopian stew, Bellingham has you covered. For locally grown produce, head to Depot Market Square, where every Saturday from April through December you’ll find the Bellingham Farmers Market. With more than 100 vendors serving everything from organic veggies to locally made crafts, the Farmers Market is a big attraction for locals and out-of-towners alike. Another popular summertime event is Downtown Sounds, a free outdoor music festival featuring bands from all over the U.S. Perhaps the biggest affair of all is Ski to Sea, a multi-sport relay that takes place each Memorial Day weekend. Starting with skiing on Mount Baker and ending with sea kayaking in Bellingham Bay, this race draws big crowds, especially to the finish line festivities in Marine Park. When it comes to the arts, Bellingham boasts enough venues and events to keep your calendar filled 365 days a year. For live entertainment, the iconic Mount Baker Theatre attracts big names in music, drama, culture, literature, and comedy, from Jane Goodall to Ira Glass to Arlo Guthrie. Other music venues include the The Shakedown and Wild Buffalo House of Music. For a dose of the visual arts, visit the Whatcom

Museum, which comprises the Lightcatcher Building and Family Interactive Gallery, Old City Hall, and the Syre Education Center. Allied Arts of Whatcom County also hosts a downtown Art Walk on the first Friday of each month, showcasing local artists and makers. Bellinghamsters also appreciate the art of a good beer. With more than 15 breweries, many of them award-winning, it may be hard to choose where to go first. Boundary Bay, Aslan, and Chuckanut Brewery are a few good places to start. If you’re more of a cider fan, check out Bellingham Cider Company, Herb’s Cider, and Honey Moon Mead & Cider. Bellingham isn’t all fun, games, and drinks (although there’s plenty of each to go around). It’s also a nexus for institutions of higher education. The largest is Western Washington University, ranked as one of the best public universities in the Pacific Northwest. The city is also home to Whatcom Community College, Bellingham Technical College, and Northwest Indian College. For K-12 students, the town offers a variety of schools, including private, Montessori, and faith-based options. The city is also a great place to stay healthy. With clean air, water, and plenty of recreation opportunities, it’s easy to keep active no matter the season. When it comes to indoor fitness, you can choose from countless gyms offering traditional services as well as CrossFit, hot yoga, rock climbing, pilates, and more. For medical services, there’s PeaceHealth St. Joseph Medical Center and plenty of smaller clinics, including naturopathic and alternative medicine options.

Another great part of Bellingham is what surrounds it. Less than 60 miles from Vancouver, BC and only 90 miles to Seattle, residents enjoy easy access to both urban centers as well as many trip-worthy towns in between. Just south of Bellingham is the Skagit Valley, a rich agricultural area internationally famous for its spring Tulip Festival. Opt to get there via the Chuckanut Drive Scenic Byway — you’ll be rewarded with beautiful views of the mountains, the bay, and nearby San Juan Islands. On the east side of the Cascade Mountains, the Methow Valley is a destination for hiking, biking, and water recreation, as well as a great place to see fall colors. Nature-lovers don’t have to leave the city to get their fill of fun, however. Bellingham is known for its natural beauty and outdoor recreation. With more than 60 miles of bike lanes and even more miles of trails, there’s always something new to explore. Mountain bikers can have a heyday at Galbraith mountain, which boasts more than 60 miles of worldclass trails. It’s also a great destination for hiking or horseback riding. There’s also plenty to see and do at Whatcom Falls, Arroyo Park, and on the Interurban Trail. For a longer backpacking adventure, head into the Chuckanut Mountains, or stick to a day-hike up to Oyster Dome for breathtaking views stretching all the way to the Olympic Mountains. Boaters can sail out from Squalicum Harbor, a full-service marina and public boat launch that also offers walking trails for those who just want to boat-gaze. Whether you’re here for a year or the rest of your life, Bellingham is an all-around great place to call home. 

ARKLEY VILLAGE IS ONE OF BELLINGHAM’S first urban com-

munities, offering all the amenities of the larger city in a cozy setting perfect for families and new businesses alike. The village emerged in 2010, after the Mount Baker neighborhood was split into Barkley and Irongate. Situated east of I-5, south of Sunset Drive, and north of Roosevelt and Alabama Hill neighborhoods, Barkley Village is emerging as a mixed-use neighborhood with plenty to do and see. For prospective homeowners, many Barkley homes enjoy views of Bellingham Bay as you make your way up Alabama Hill. Overall, the neighborhood is a great fit for those interested in recreation and sightseeing. All you have to do is continue on Sunset Drive until it becomes Mount Baker Highway, a stunning stretch of road with access to world-class hiking and skiing. Barkley is home to companies with local and international reach, making it a great option for business owners. The commercial center of the village lies around the intersection of Woburn Street and Barkley

Boulevard, where you’ll find stores, restaurants, and modern office buildings. One of the area’s highlights is the Regal Barkley Village IMAX & RPX movie theater. Near the theater you’ll also find numerous restaurants, including Scotty Browns, Jalapeños, On Rice, MOD Pizza, and Bob’s Burgers. Zen Sushi also holds a fantastic happy hour from 11-4 p.m. Monday to Friday where for every three sushi plates you pick, the fourth is free. For craft wine and beer, head to Overflow Taps, a taphouse that donates part of its proceeds to clean water access to those in need across the globe. In addition to shops and restaurants, Barkley residents enjoy quick access to Bellingham Public Library- Barkley Branch, Haggen Food & Pharmacy, and various healthcare clinics. For those interested in exploring Bellingham’s outdoor recreation, Whatcom Falls, Northridge Park, and the Big Rock Garden are only a short bike ride away. During the summer, nearby Bloedel Donovan Park makes a great destination for swimming in Lake Whatcom.

A variety of events take place on the Barkley Village Green, which serves as the neighborhood’s hub for entertainment and gatherings. Recurring events include the Vietnam Veterans Car Show, the Salish to Salish 10K, and the Barkley Village Wine Walk. The space has also been used to host a summer farmers market. Barkley is a great place for families, with plenty of kid-friendly events and businesses. The Barkley Village Easter Hunt occurs yearly, while the Barkley Gazebo Park holds annual events perfect for children. If you’re hoping to catch a familyfriendly movie, Regal Cinemas offers a My Way Matinee every second and fourth Saturday at 10:30 a.m. The lights are turned up and the volume is turned down, allowing for children to sing and dance along to whatever film is playing. As for schools, the closest elementary school is Northern Heights Elementary School. Students then attend Shuksan Middle School and Squalicum High School. 

NE OF THE FOUR ORIGINAL

settlements that later consolidated into Bellingham, Fairhaven boasts a rich history that can still be felt in its downtown core and surrounding residential streets. Located at the southern end of Bellingham’s city limits, residents enjoy views of the Chuckanut Mountains and Bellingham Bay. Fairhaven originated in the late 1800s, when many believed it would become the western terminus of the Great Northern Railway. Although Seattle eventually won that particular bid, Fairhaven grew into a bustling town nonetheless. The town is sometimes remembered for its seedier side during the early 1900s, when it boasted saloons, brothels, and opium dens. Little bits of the town’s early history can be found on historic markers throughout Fairhaven Historic District, so keep your eyes peeled to the ground as you explore. Some markers identify old buildings — Cigar Factory 1907 — while others are just plain morbid, like one that reads: Here is where Mathew was cut in two by a streetcar. The downtown area features a grid of Victorian red brick buildings constructed in the late 1800s. The architecture adds an old-timey charm to the already charming neighborhood, with restaurants and shops secreted away in narrow alleys and courtyards. Downtown, the Fairhaven Village Green is the perfect place to enjoy an ice cream cone from Acme Ice Cream or read a book from Village Books, a beloved independent bookstore. In the summer months, the Village Green also hosts a Bellingham Farmers Market and Fairhaven Outdoor Cinema. After strolling through Fairhaven’s quaint streets, stop by Galloway’s for a cocktail or head to Stones Throw Brewing for a pint of local beer. If your canine companion is with you, drop

into Paws for a Beer, a dog-friendly tavern with plenty of play space. If you’re hungry, Fairhaven has numerous restaurants, from delicious Thai-Lao fusion at Maikham to mouthwatering prime rib and salmon at Dirty Dan Harris Steakhouse. For views of the bay, head to Keenan’s at the Pier. If you’re craving a slice, have your pick at Fat Pie, Fairhaven Pizza, Övn Wood Fired Pizza, and Pizza’zza. Fairhaven residents also enjoy access to the Fairhaven branch of the Bellingham Public Library, as well as a quick commute to Western Washington University, which is just up the hill. Public schools within walking distance include Lowell Elementary School and Fairhaven Middle School. Residents are also in reach of numerous local health clinics, gyms, and Haggen Food & Pharmacy. Essentially, anything you need is only a short drive — or walk — away. If you need something downtown, it’s just a quick hop onto the highway or a pleasant drive along the bay into Bellingham’s commercial center. For recreation, the neighborhood enjoys access to miles of trail systems. The nearby Interurban Trail connects Fairhaven Park, Arroyo Park, Marine Park, and Post Point Estuary, where Great Blue Herons nest in the summer. For a walk along the water, head to the South Bay Trail, which starts at Taylor Dock and eventually drops by Woods Coffee. Follow the trail far enough north, and you’ll find yourself in downtown Bellingham. At Fairhaven Station, travelers can journey on the Amtrak Cascades line or a Greyhound bus, both of which offer regular transport to Seattle, Portland, and Vancouver, BC. The neighborhood also connects to the Chuckanut Drive Scenic Byway, perfect for a joy ride along the water or for accessing trailheads into the mountains. 

Fairhaven

In The Loop If you hear the name Dirty Dan Harris, don’t be alarmed. Born Daniel J. Harris, he was Fairhaven’s original founder, named for his shabby appearances and questionable hygiene. A colorful character, he’s responsible for the Fairhaven we know today. Birders can flock to Post Point Lagoon — one of Bellingham Bay’s few remaining pocket estuaries — for a glimpse at the area’s resident Great Blue Herons. The herons typically arrive in February and stay through the summer, and can be viewed from a peaceful boardwalk.

When you’re not too busy swimming or playing golf, some of the most beautiful parks are right in your area. Afternoon Beach and Marina Park both have direct access to Lake Whatcom. Other parks like Harborview Park and Beaver Ridge Park offer more trails and hiking options. Just a short drive away you’ll find Galbraith Mountain, which boasts beautiful views of Lake Whatcom and world-class mountain biking trails. Other fun recreation areas include Lookout Mountain Preserve and the Stimpson Family Reserve. Should you have a passion for gardening, there are two community gardens perfect for satisfying your green thumb and connecting with neighbors. There is also a Clubhouse featuring a cafe, along with the neighborhood’s administration and accounting departments. As for other places to eat, Tino’s Pizza & Pasta Co. is nearby, along with an El Agave Mexican Restaurant and Ken’s Cozy Kitchen. Instead of heading into town for grocery shopping, residents can visit the Valley Market & Deli. Education wise, Sudden Valley feeds into the Bellingham Public School District. Sudden Valley is home to more than 7,000 residents. Originally a private property known as “The Ranch,” Sudden Valley took off in 1969, when a developer named Ken Sanwick purchased the 1,200 acre parcel. Sanwick dreamed of a neighborhood with homes tucked into the trees, offering a wilderness feel in a residential setting. Since then, Sudden Valley has become just that — a quiet, nature-centered community for retirees and new families alike. Just minutes from Bellingham’s core — most residents have a 20-minute commute — Sudden Valley is a nice option for anyone looking for a quieter way of living while still being close to the city. Home prices are also more affordable than in Bellingham proper, making it a great option for first-time buyers or people wanting to downsize. Plus, there’s plenty to do without going into the city. With 20 parks, multiple playgrounds, and access to the lake, you will never tire of exploring. Sudden Valley also boasts the Sudden Valley Golf Course, a public course with 18 holes and a driving range. Other amenities include two swimming pools — one of which is Olympic-sized — and a marina where you can store canoes and kayaks. The Community Center serves as a hub for resources and events. Here, you’ll find a gym, daycare center, game lounge, dance barn, and a sauna with showers. Check the center’s

Bellingham city limits you’ll find Ferndale. The town is situated along the Nooksack River, with views of Mount Baker to the east and the San Juan Islands to the west. Home to nearly 15,000 people, Ferndale’s population grows to roughly 30,000 when you include unincorporated areas surrounding the town. Located northwest of Bellingham, Ferndale is nearly equidistant between Seattle and Vancouver, BC, offering quieter living with easy access to urban amenities. Although its roots are in dairy and logging, its industry now relies heavily on manufacturing. Affordable commercial property makes it an appealing location for growing businesses. The town is already home to several prominent companies, some international, including Samson Rope, SuperFeet, Cascade Dafo, NutraDRIED, and Jack’s Paleo Kitchen. When it comes to education, the Ferndale School District serves more than 5,000 students both within city limits and in the nearby communities of Custer, Lummi Island, and north Bellingham. It offers six elementary schools, two middle schools, and a high school. Ferndale was founded in the mid-19th century, and still features relics from its pioneer past. Along with plenty of trails perfect for walking, jogging, or biking, Hovander Homestead Park also offers a glimpse into the town’s agricultural roots. At the center of the park you’ll find the historic Hovander House, complete with a barn and resident farm animals during the warmer months. Each summer, the park also hosts a Civil War reenactment and the Antique Farm Fair. Just east of Hovander you’ll find Tennant Lake Park, a mecca for birders or those simply looking for a pleasant place to walk. Visitors can stroll a boardwalk through the wetlands or visit the Tennant Lake Interpretive Center. A lush fragrance garden outside the center offers a full sensory experience. Visitors can tour the historic log cabins each July during Old Settlers Weekend and during Olde Fashioned Christmas. Outside of these dates, visitors can also schedule tours throughout the year or rent select buildings for parties and events. Bird-lovers will enjoy the Sardis Raptor Center, which rehabilitates injured animals and offers educational programming perfect for young birders. Visitors can observe a variety of rescued birds native to the North Sound, including bald eagles, owls, hawks, and falcons. Despite its relatively small size, Ferndale packs a big culinary punch. Downtown, you’ll find the New Mexico Tamale Company, named as one of Yelp’s best places to eat in America in 2020. There’s also Leader Block Wine Co & Eatery, an Italian restaurant whose award-winning wine program earned recognition from Wine Spectator Restaurant Awards in 2019. If you’re into craft beer, head to FrinGe Brewing, a relatively new brewer that hosts rotating food trucks. Other must-stops include Edaleen Dairy, The Steak House, and Luxe Thai Cuisine. 

In The Loop Lynden is home to two major events that attract visitors from all across the state: the Raspberry Festival and the Northwest Washington Fair. Both are a blast, with plenty to eat, drink, and see. Lynden is home to the very first Woods Coffee, now a popular chain with locations all across the North Sound. If you’re feeling strategic, head to Bender Fields for a game of life-sized chess. They also have — you guessed it — numerous fields for baseball, softball, and soccer. There’s also a bocce ball court, a playground, and an offleash area for dogs. Bellewood Farms is your destination for seasonal fun. Whether it’s apple cider and pumpkin picking in the fall, Christmas trees, sleigh rides, and hot toddies in the winter, or u-pick apples in the summer, there’s always something to do. The town feels like a return to simpler times, yet offers an eclectic Main Street with modern restaurants and shops. The community of roughly 15,000 people is tight-knit and friendly. Don’t be fooled, this quaint town knows how to throw a party. It’s home to the Northwest Washington Fair, the Northwest Raspberry Festival, and a Lighted Christmas Parade. For more than 110 years, people have gathered on the first day of June for the town’s annual Farmers Day Parade, which celebrates the area’s rich agricultural ties. Lynden has several beautiful parks, including Berthusen Park, Bender Fields, and City Park, sometimes called Million Smiles Park. Residents also enjoy quick access to Bellingham, BC, and the coast. The Lynden School District offers above-average education to roughly 3,000 students, with three elementary schools, one middle school, and one high school. It also operates a partnership alternative learning school that spans grades K-12. As the largest Dutch settlement in Washington, Lynden boasts a rich history that can be felt in its shops, restaurants, and attractions. Much of the action takes place on the four-block span of Front Street, also known as Old Dutch Town. Here, you can visit the Lynden Pioneer Museum to learn about the town’s history, or taste this history for yourself at the nationally recognized Lynden Dutch Bakery.

Birch Bay/Blaine

B

LAINE LIES ON THE CANADIAN BORDER, boasting

miles of beautiful coastline with views of Vancouver Island and Point Roberts. Its population is roughly 5,000, with a school district that operates a high school, middle school, elementary school, and a primary school. The Blaine School District also maintains a primary school on Point Roberts, a pene-enclave community located south of Vancouver, BC, across the Georgia Strait. Located on the border between Blaine and Douglas, BC, you’ll find the Peace Arch, centerpiece of the larger Peace Arch Historical State Park. Constructed in the 1920s to celebrate peace between Canada and the United States, the towering white structure remains an iconic part of Blaine’s culture, while the larger park serves as a nexus of recreation and activity. The park’s 85 picnic tables and playground make it a great place for lunch with the family while a day-use kitchen, available for rent, facilitates larger gatherings. Each June, the park hosts an International Arts and Music Festival. Protruding between Semiahmoo Bay and Drayton Harbor stretches Semiahmoo Spit, a destination for beautiful views and wildlife sightings. A short paved trail across from Semiahmoo Park offers an easy way to soak in the scenery.

34

Welcome-Whatcom.com

At the very end of the spit you’ll find Semiahmoo Resort, a luxury getaway featuring fine dining at its on-site restaurant, Packer’s, as well as spa treatments, golf, pickleball courts, and beach-side activities for the whole family. To the east of the spit is Drayton Harbor, whose waters serve as the lifeblood for tide-to-table restaurants like Drayton Harbor Oysters. If you prefer turf over surf, head to Jack Niemann’s Black Forest Steak House, toward the harbor’s north end. The waters around Blaine are also home to the Historic Plover Ferry, which once transported cannery workers between Blaine and Semiahmoo Spit. During the summer, visitors can relive this slice of Washington history by riding the ferry on its original route and then visiting the Alaska Packers Association Cannery Museum. Across from the spit, bird lovers flock to Marine Park, host of the annual Wings Over Water Festival. Rocky beaches, walking trails, picnic areas, and a nautical-themed playground make it a perfect destination for the whole family. For a unique shopping experience, visit The Swanson Gallery, a studio featuring stained glass art and gift items.

BIRCH BAY South of Blaine and Semiahmoo you’ll find the beach-side village of Birch Bay, named for the sparkling body of water encapsulated by Semiahmoo Peninsula and Point White Horn. With roughly 8,000 residents, this familyfriendly community centers around the picturesque bay, which offers stunning views and year-round recreation. Kids and adults alike can have a blast at Birch Bay Waterslides, a water park featuring fast slides, a kiddie pool, and hot tubs. For a different water experience, there’s Birch Bay State Park, with more than 8,000 feet of shoreline and warmerthan-average water for Washington beaches. The park offers endless recreation opportunities from camping and birding to wind-surfing and clamming. Point White Horn Marine

Reserve is another great place for a hike, with the chance to spot seals, porpoises, and various birds. Other sources of fun in Birch Bay include fishing, boating, or golfing. Junior golfers can try their hand at putt putt at Miniature World Family Fun Center. The Fun Center also offers an arcade, go-karts, and a mini train ride through the forest. Retail is concentrated in Birch Bay Square, a shopping center off I-5. Here you’ll find an assortment of stores and restaurants including the locally owned Bow Wow and Woofs, Betty Be Good, and Bob’s Burgers and Brew. For waterside dining, visit Bay Breeze Restaurant and Bar, CJ’s Beach House, or Birch Bay Teriyaki & Chinese. Another sweet destination near the water is The C Shop Candy Shop, Cafe, & Pizzeria. 

Welcome Guide 2021 35

Mount Baker Foothills Mount Baker comprise several small communities, each with their own mountain-town charm. The towns are dotted across a large geographic area, accessed by either Mount Baker Highway (State Route 542), which starts in Bellingham and runs north-east toward the mountain, or State Route 9, which runs north and south.

Mount Baker Highway Along this spectacular highway, which follows the Nooksack River before winding up toward its apex at Artist Point, you’ll encounter several small towns. The first is Deming, which falls within the Nooksack Indian Reservation and is home to the tribe’s government offices. Deming is home to roughly 350 people. Each June, it hosts the Deming Logging Show, an entertaining display of logging techniques and talents with proceeds benefiting injured loggers. If you’re hungry, head to North Fork Brewery or Refugios Country Italian Cuisine. Heading northeast from Deming, following the Nooksack River, you’ll reach the towns of Kendall and Maple Falls. Both towns are beautiful but small, with 200 and 300 residents respectively. Although there’s not much retail activity, Maple Falls does boast a popular Japanese restaurant called Yuki Yama as well as a grocery store. North of Maple Falls,

up Silver Lake Road, is Silver Lake Park, a picturesque recreation area that offers a campground as well as cabin and lodge rentals. Next up the highway is the town of Glacier, which serves as the gateway to Mt. Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest and parts of North Cascades National Park. Popular trailheads accessed from Glacier include Skyline Divide, Church Mountain, and Heliotrope Ridge. Hikers can get information and permits at the Glacier Ranger Station, located just off the highway. Those wanting to refuel before or after a day of adventure can visit Chair 9 Woodstone Pizza & Bar or the Wake n Bakery. The town also offers various lodging options. A few miles beyond Glacier, down FS-33, you’ll encounter Nooksack Falls, a nearly 90-foot waterfall worth the detour. Continue up the highway to arrive at Mount Baker Ski Area, a resort known for its record-breaking snowfall, difficult inbound routes, and generous backcountry access. At the very end of the highway you’ll reach Artist Point, a breathtaking destination offering 360-views of the surrounding Cascade mountains and access to world-class hiking, including popular trails like Chain Lakes, Ptarmigan Ridge, and Table Mountain. Snowpack means the parking lot is only accessible from July through October.

Heading east from Bellingham on Mount Baker Highway, you’ll encounter a roundabout at Nugents Corner. If you head north on SR 9 at this roundabout, you’ll hit the sister towns of Everson and Nooksack, populations 2,500 and 1,500 respectively. In Everson you’ll find a few attractions, including Samson Estates Winery and Raspberry Ridge Golf Course. Both towns are rural with rich agricultural roots and many active farms. Each year, the cities host the Everson — Nooksack Summer Festival featuring a parade, pancake breakfast, and live music. Just before the Canadian border you’ll hit the town of Sumas, population 1,500. One of the town’s major attractions is the Sumas International Motorsport Academy (SIMA). With a nearly mile long track and numerous technical curves, it is considered one of the best race kart tracks in North America. To the north, the town’s Sumas-Huntingdon Border Crossing offers a route into Canada, connecting SR 9 with BC 11 in Abbotsford. If, instead of going north on SR 9 at Nugents Corner, you head south at the roundabout after Deming, you’ll find the town of Acme and the unincorporated community of Van Zandt, both residential areas nestled in the valley between Whatcom Lake and the Cascade Mountains. The tiny town of Acme has fewer than 300 people and Van Zandt is even smaller. For some all-American fare, visit the charming Acme Diner in the town’s center. 

Head to Church Beach, behind Lummi Island Congregational Church, for incredible views and plenty of sand-combing fun. While you’re there, walk the meditative stone labyrinth. On the first Saturday of every month, the public is invited to visit the Sculpture Woods surrounding the home and studio of artist Ann Morris. As you explore the 15 acres of lush forest with views of Legoe Bay, you’ll encounter various bronze sculptures that blur the line between nature and art, myth and reality.

Lummi Island

J

UST OFF THE COAST OF BELLINGHAM you’ll find this

tranquil community of fewer than 1,000 people, surrounded by the Salish Sea. Despite its name, the island is not technically part of the Lummi Indian Reservation, which is located on the peninsula across the water. Visitors and residents access the island with a short ferry ride — fewer than 10 minutes from shore to shore. Although it’s less than a mile from the mainland, Lummi Island feels like a world away. The island’s slow pace and relaxed beach vibes make it a great place for a day trip, weekend getaway, or extended retreat. Although the island lacks a true town center, several businesses are situated close to the ferry dock, on Nugent Road. In walking distance from the ferry you’ll find the Beach Store Cafe and SauseBurger Stand, as well as the Islander Store, which sells groceries. Also in range are the Island Library, Beach Elementary School, which serves students K-5, and the historic Grange Hall, a local gathering place and venue for parties, weddings, and other town happenings.

Toward the heart of the island is Artisan Wine Gallery, which hosts tastings on Fridays and Saturdays and features local artwork. On the northeast side of the island is Curry Preserve, a 50-acre expanse of land with walking trails and frequent wildlife activity. The property is managed by the Lummi Island Heritage Trust, which also maintains the Baker Preserve. Here, a steep trail takes hikers up more than 1,000 feet in only 1.6 miles, leading to a breathtaking viewpoint of the San Juan Islands and Rosario Straight. Also on the island is The Willows Inn, internationally renowned for its on-site dining. The restaurant’s head chef, Blaine Wetzle, has been recognized by the James Beard Foundation as the Best Chef in the Northwest. The restaurant has accumulated numerous awards for its Pacific Northwest fare and has been listed as one of the best restaurants in the world. The tasting menu features fresh produce grown on-site and seafood caught in nearby waters, creating a hyper-local culinary experience worthy of bucket lists around the globe. What’s an island without beaches? While most beach access is limited to private property, Lummi has a few public beaches, including a beach near the ferry dock on Nugent Road, Church Beach, and Sunset Beach. Church Beach is

We m e a s ur e s uc c e s s diffe r e ntly .

accessed from the parking lot of Lummi Island Congregational Church, on the island’s west side. There, visitors can also walk through a forested labyrinth intended to promote quiet meditation. Sunset Beach is on the northwest shore of the island, near The Willows Inn. Boaters can launch their vessels from Village Point Marina Boat Launch. With its spectacular views, peaceful atmosphere, and small-town quirk, it’s no surprise Lummi Island is a haven for artists. Visitors can engage in the community’s art scene in a variety of ways. Local art venues like Good Thunder Arts gallery and Vitreous Visions offer an opportunity to see work on display or purchase a piece of artwork. For a more experiential outing, visitors can explore the Ann Morris Sculpture Woods, open to the public on the first Saturday every month or by appointment. If planning a visit, consider biking around the island. Bring your own bicycle or rent one from Lummi Island Concierge. A seven-mile loop around the island’s north side involves mostly flat terrain with views of the ocean most of the way. For a more challenging ride, consider the southern end of the island, which has more hills and steep ascents. Both options promise great views and light traffic, for a pleasant tour of the island. 

Ear Solutions Ear solutions is pleased to offer an advanced microsuction ear cleaning technology. Our goal is to provide you with affordable consistent compassionate care that you can trust. You can relax knowing that this procedure is performed by qualified nurse ear wax technologists.

We use the same technology that ENT professionals use. Microsuction is a safe effective way of deep cleaning ear wax build up, debris, and foreign objects from the ear canal. Throughout your appointment the nurse wears a headset equipped with a light source, and sees a highly magnified view of the ear canal, then uses a gentle low vacuum suction pump with an attached ear suction tip to remove wax, debris, or foreign objects with ease from the ear canal.

icrosuction is preferred by many M people, gives customers fast results, and it is much more effective than the traditional ear wax removal methods that use an irrigation syringe. Customers that suffer from hearing loss and ear infections happily report that their symptoms improved significantly after trying microsuction ear wax removal.

WHATCOM COUNTY

A– Z

BY BECKY MANDELBAUM

is sweet. If there’s any doubt, follow the data. In 2018, Livability ranked Bellingham among the top 100 places to live in the country. The city earned high marks for education, arts and entertainment, bike and pedestrian friendliness, and outdoor recreation. Bellinghamsters also know it’s a great place for those who enjoy craft beer, farm to table food, and delicious coffee. When it comes to entertainment, there’s something to look forward to in Whatcom all year round. Major events include Ski to Sea, the Bellingham Bay Marathon, the Whatcom Artist Studio Tour, and Allied Arts Holiday Festival of the Arts. Whatever the season, there’s something to celebrate. On the weekends, keep your calendar full with movies, shows, and events in Bellingham’s downtown corridor. Enjoy live music at The Wild Buffalo or see play at the historic Mount Baker Theatre. Hear the Bellingham Symphony Orchestra or spend the day exploring The Whatcom Museum. For an electrifying outing, visit the SPARK Museum of Electrical Invention, or catch an indie film at the Pickford Film Center. Whatever you like, Whatcom likely has it. If it doesn’t, Seattle and Vancouver, BC are both in easy reach.

NORTH CASCADES NATIONAL PARK

If there’s one thing our area has, it’s lakes. Bellinghamsters can head to Whatcom, Padden, and Samish Lake for boating, swimming, fishing, and trails. Hike into the Chuckanuts to enjoy small lakes like Fragrance Lake and Lizard Lake.

This national park spans four counties, including Whatcom. Journey up Highway 20 to discover turquoise lakes, snow-capped peaks, and oldgrowth forest. Plenty of camping and boating opportunities also abound.

MOUNT BAKER THEATRE

OYSTERS BY THE BAY

A work of art in itself, this historic theater in downtown Bellingham attracts nationally renowned musicians, comedians, dancers, and performers. From musicals and arts lectures to ballets and symphonies, MBT brings big-city art and culture to our humble town by the bay.

Our corner of the country is known for oysters, so there’s plenty of ways to get your fill. Taylor Shellfish Farms in Bow and Drayton Harbor Oyster Company in Blaine are two local suppliers of quality shellfish.

three national parks, numerous state parks, and even more county parks within city limits, the adventures are truly endless. Whatever you do, chances are high you can do it in Whatcom. The county is nationally renowned for its mountain biking, specifically at Galbraith Mountain. Skiers can find world-class slopes at Mt. Baker Ski Area; during the summer, the mountain’s numerous trails attract hikers from all over the world. The Chuckanut Mountains also offer plenty of activity, whether it’s hiking, camping, biking, fishing, or rockclimbing. Golfers have their pick of courses throughout the county and runners enjoy traffic-free excursions on the Interurban Trail. When it comes to water play, Whatcom also has you covered. Boating and fishing opportunities abound in Bellingham Bay, the Nooksack River, and countless lakes. Launch a sailboat from Squalicum Harbor, put in a sea kayak at Marine Park, or explore Canadian waters off the coast of Blaine. The possibilities are endless. Look for city-based park listings in our “Welcome to the Neighborhood” feature, which begins on p.21. 

OVING IS STRESSFUL FOR EVERYONE IN THE FAMILY,

including your furry friends. As you settle into your new home, know that there are plenty of local amenities to make your pet feel right at home. Start your day with a walk through one of the county’s numerous dog-friendly parks, many of which come with beautiful views that’ll keep tails wagging. On your day off, grab a pint with your pup at one of Bellingham’s many dog-friendly breweries and bars. Two local drinking holes, Paws for a Beer and Gruff Brewing Co., specifically cater to doglovers. If you’d rather strike out on your own, there are also plenty of accommodating doggie daycares and trainers around. Those still searching for their forever pet can visit one of the county’s humane societies or shelters. If you’re just wanting to get your kitten fix, schedule a visit to NEKO Cat Cafe in downtown Bellingham for a combination of coffee and cats — take one or both home.  80

Taste  Food Trucks

Sage Against the Machine

The Rolling Stoves of Whatcom County BY LINDSEY MAJOR AND BECKY MANDELBAUM

T

he following food trucks are the rock stars of their industry: inventive, fresh, and so spontaneous you may not find them in the same place twice. Here in Whatcom County, we’re lucky to have access to so many different styles of food. Whether you’re craving Mexican, Salvadorian, Mediterranean, Filipino, or vegan cuisine, there’s no wrong answer to, “Which food truck should I visit next?” We’re even luckier that many chefs are choosing to mobilize their meals so foodies can grab a bite wherever they go, be it a festival, brewery, or baseball game. If you’re torn, why not visit them all? 92

Kebab Casual

Sage Against The Machine Tara and Nate Johnson were quickly approaching their wedding date in 2018 when they decided to start their new business. Their love of healthy eating combined with decades of restaurant experience led them to create Sage Against the Machine. Tara, who has been an off-and-on vegan for most of her life, created the menu based on her favorite recipes. The menu is entirely plant-based, with fresh ingredients from ethical and eco-friendly sources. No trans fats or preservatives appear in anything Sage serves. Nate grew up on a traditional Montana diet of meat and potatoes — so how does he feel about owning a vegan, plant-based business? “It doesn’t feel like I’m missing out on anything,” he says. Sage’s mission is to make their food taste familiar but without all the nasty additives. The name is inspired by the ‘90s band Rage Against the Machine, whose music urged revolutionary change. Sage hopes to inspire similar ideas of change in the food industry. 360.988.1800, satm360foodtruck.com

Kebab Casual Bellingham native Karl Shilhanek started Kebab Casual as a way to ease into the restaurant scene, but quickly discovered that food trucks have a charm all of their own. Kebab Casual brings affordable and healthy Mediterranean fare to the Fountain District, with a focus on grilled meats, homemade sauces, and flatbreads made fresh daily using Skagit Valley flour. Their falafel is a standout, boasting fermented lemon peel, cilantro, and garlic. Accompanied by cucumber, house-made pickled turnip, and organic oak leaf lettuce, the sandwich is served on the truck’s signature grilled flatbread. Tahini and HOSA hot sauce add extra flavor and kick. Enjoy Za’atar fries on the side. If you’re feeling something meatier, go for the chicken shawarma, spicy lamb gyro, or a meat and veggie kebab bowl.

Find this truck on the corner of W. North Street and Meridian, with a few covered picnic tables for on-site dining. It’s right next to 76 gas station, making it easy to grab a soda or extra snack. It’s also catty-corner from Menace Brewing, where you can bring your meal to enjoy with a pint of beer. 360.319.4091, kebabcasual.com

A Que Tacos These mouthwatering tacos aren’t all you’ll find at this authentic Mexican food truck. The extensive menu boasts quesadillas, tortas, nachos, tamales, veggie plates, burritos, and more. You can also pair your meal with an iced horchata. Find them at Goods Local Brews. facebook.com/goodsbrews

Brother’s Bus Bistro Brother’s Bus serves up unique gourmet burgers, like The Mighty Thor, featuring smoked ham, pineapple, and jalapenos. Their playful grilled sandwiches — like the Gourmet LaRayne PB&J and the Grumpy Tiki Grilled Cheese — come on thick, toasted slices of brioche. Catch them at Gruff Brewing in downtown Bellingham. 360.224.2755, brothersbusbistro.com

Danielle’s Back East BBQ This is your destination for authentic southern-style BBQ in Bellingham. Expect generously portioned ribs, brisket, fried chicken, and pulled pork, plus all the sides you crave: mac and cheese, hushpuppies, potato salad, and more. Find them at Stones Throw Brewery. 360.746.8700, backeastbbq.com

Dumpling Girls If you’re looking for piping hot dumplings, look no further. Authentic chicken or beef dumplings come served with a delicious dipping sauce. The menu also has crispy egg rolls and hearty noodle dishes. Find them at Goods Local Brews. 360.671.3085, facebook.com/goodsbrews

Her son Marco joined in on the project, and the two opened Monolo Eats Food Truck in July, 2020. Offering authentic Mexican food with inspirations from Greek, Indian, and South Asian cuisines, Monolo Eats is not just another taco truck. Their menu features ingredients such as tofu, feta cheese, coconut oil, and cucumber, earning their style the title of Alternative Mexican food. The menu caters to various dietary restrictions, featuring both vegan and vegetarian options. On the breakfast menu you’ll find the Breakfast Burrito and the Vegan Breakfast Burrito, featuring crumbled tofu and a sweet potato mix in 94

Super Mario’s Mario fled El Salvador during the dangerous civil war. His first home in the United States was in Los Angeles, where he met his wife, Raquel. When it was time to start a family, Mario and Raquel decided to raise their children somewhere else; they moved to Bellingham in the early 2000s. Mario got a job at Trident Seafoods, where his uncanny ability to fix things earned him the nickname “Super Mario.” His signature phrase was, “I can fix it.” In 2003, Mario and Raquel decided to start their own business. Mario knew Raquel was a superstar in the kitchen, so the food industry was an obvious choice. When they found the perfect food truck back in Los Angeles, they flew down to California and drove it all the way back to Bellingham to the spot where it still sits on Forest Street. The truck was so successful that Mario and Raquel opened their own restaurant
