I

f you've always imagined a destination wedding, but find yourself having to choose a local venue because trekking your entire guest list to the Caribbean or Tuscany sounds like a headache, we've rounded up the perfect local venues. It's time to think outside the box to create a local destinationstyle wedding. For rustic, farm-themed weddings, picture rolling pastures, wide-open spaces, and weathered wooden structures like BelleWood Acres in Bellingham, Barnstar in Ferndale, or even Lynden’s Northwest Washington Fairgrounds. All three venues are perfect backdrops for a wedding steeped with rustic farm details like using bales of hay for seating and congregating. Choose simple wildflower bouquets that convey effortless elegance. Put a premium on the homespun: Go for the familystyle dining option, and use Mason jars not only for cocktails, but single-serving desserts instead of the traditional cake. Open pastures can set the stage for cowboy-themed details. Choose gingham-trimmed invitations and outfit the wedding party in cowboy boots and 10-gallon hats. Wagon wheels and horseshoes (ends up for good luck!) make for fitting accents. Add a starry effect by crisscrossing strings of lights above the dance floor. If nautical is more your style, look to the San Juan Islands for inspiration. The Rosario Resort & Spa on Orcas Island offers breathtaking water views that can tie your nautical wedding together. Decorate with anchors, rope, and maritime flags. You can also incorporate driftwood into the centerpieces with soft colored blooms like lavender and blush toned roses. If you’re going casual, consider having the groomsmen wear boat shoes and the bridesmaids wear espadrilles. If you’d prefer an elegant feel, drape strands of pearls and use seashells as votives. Dreaming of wine tasting in Tuscany with your spouseto-be? Then a winery-themed wedding at one of Washington’s many vineyards might be the right local destination for you. Check out Samson Estates Winery in Everson, where their beautiful vineyard sets the stage for an elegant wedding. When working with a vineyard theme be careful with the details to avoid crossing the line into kitsch. Think less is more. Allow the vineyard to take center stage in decor without adding too much, like simple floral centerpieces on cloth-draped tables. For party favors go with classic crowd pleasers like etched wine glasses complete with personal-sized bottles of wine. Wherever you imagined your special day taking place, there’s bound to be a venue nearby that can transport you a million miles away and serve as the ideal backdrop for whatever you have in mind. With a little ingenuity you can have a destination wedding, locally. ♥

Flowers by Season WRITTEN BY NATALIE RANSOM OF POZIE BY NATALIE

T

o have and to hold, flowers add a memorable accent to your special day. We give you a season-by-season guide to what’s blooming when, what will hold up, and suggestions on how to put the flowers or arrangements to best use.

5

WINTER 1. Dusty Miller: A unique filler, great for contrast and texture. The foliage will appear more white, blue, or gray when mixed with different flowers. 2. Rose Hips: The dried fruit left after a rose blooms. These are long-lasting and will stay red for many years. There are some varieties that have large hips and some that are small. 3. Pine Cones: The classic winter accent. Can be saved for years to come after the wedding. Great as an accent in centerpieces. Affordable and cute. Can be dressed up with glitter or painted metallic.

4

2 3

4. Blue Spruce: The unique minty blue color is great contrast to the darker greens of many other evergreens. Long lasting, fragrant and affordable.

1

5. Douglas Fir: A classic Pacific Northwest green. Soft fragrant branches are great for table garlands, arbors and bouquets.

AUTUMN 1. Cabbage Flower: Large full head. Very sturdy blooms. Great for a pop of color and texture in bouquets, centerpieces and arbor arrangements. Very long-lasting. 2. Button Mums: Affordable and available in a large variety of colors and shapes. Small blooms add texture and color without stealing the show.

1 8 2

3

3. Red Hypericum: Long lasting and vibrant berries won’t wilt even out of water. The burgundy variety is also a nice fall accent color. 4. Banksia: Unusual long lasting blooms. Make a statement with something different. Great for bouquets, arbors and centerpieces. 5. Agonis: Unusual dark brown color is unique. Great for texture and color contrast.

4 6 5

6. Cedar: A local green that is long lasting and beautiful. Great for garlands as it holds up very well out of water. 7. Leucadendron: A tropical that is long lasting and sturdy. The blooms range in color for great contrast. 8. Gunnii Eucalyptus: A smaller leafed version of eucalyptus. Same lovely eucalyptus fragrance. Great to add texture to bouquets, centerpieces, and arbors. 10 CoutureWeddingsMag.com

SPRING

3

5

4

1. Tulips: Affordable. They come in a large variety of colors. Good for bouquets and centerpieces. 2. Ranunculus: Many-petaled bloom will open up to be large and full. Looks great in bouquets and decor. Comes in many shades, including some bi-color, like this photo. 3. Wax Flower: Unique citrus fragrance. Great filler. Nice combination of fragrance and color. Available in several colors. Holds up well, can be used as hair flowers. 4. Hydrangea: Great base for bouquets and centerpieces. This mini-green variety is nice to work with because the heads aren’t too large. Adds the perfect pop of green.

6 6

5. Tree Fern: Versatile and delicate green. Holds up extremely well. Can be used to create a cascading look without the weight.

1

6. Calla Lily: Great for bouquets and boutonnieres. Holds up well, even when not in water. Comes in a variety of bold colors. One of the only flowers that has an almost black variety.

2

SUMMER

4

1. Peonies: Quintessential romantic flowers. Large full fragrant heads. Bold enough to use as the only flower in a bouquet or centerpiece. A wedding classic that isn’t fading out of popularity any time soon.

3

2. Green Hypericum: Great textural element. I like to use these for boutonnieres because they hold up extremely well. Faint maple syrup fragrance is unexpected and sweet.

5

3. Mondial Roses: One of my favorite, frilly, large-headed affordable roses. They have many of the same qualities of the much more pricey garden roses. Long lasting. 4. Spray Roses: I like mixing large roses and spray roses for texture since spray roses come with buds attached. They are great for boutonnieres. 5. Silver Dollar Eucalyptus: Another wedding staple. Soothing fragrance. Extremely long-lasting. Will hold up out of water. Great as a green for garlands. Dusty color is a nice contrast. 6. Seeded Eucalyptus: Greenery and texture combined. The seed pods are a great accent for bouquets, boutonnieres, and centerpieces. Long-lasting, fragrant and affordable.

Invitation Etiquette WRITTEN BY CATHERINE TORRES

I

nvitations tell guests important information for your wedding: location, date, time, registry details, and anything else you want to convey. The basics are easy, but what if you have something more delicate to convey, such as no children at the ceremony or dealing with plus ones. We did some research to answer your trickiest invitation etiquette concerns. Question: Kids are great, I just don’t want them running around during my elegant wedding. How do I write that in the invitations so no one gets offended? Answer: The most straightforward way to handle this situation is by addressing the invite’s envelope with the names of the adults who are invited. You can include an additional inner envelope to further clarify the invitees, or write in the guest names on the RSVP card so 12 CoutureWeddingsMag.com

there’s no confusion. Incidentally, this is the best way to allow or discourage plus ones. Some couples will also include a “no kids” note on their wedding website, written in a fun manner: “Your kids are awesome, but we all deserve some adult time. So, we ask you leave anyone under 16 years old at home.” Question: When should I send save the dates and wedding invites? Answer: It depends on your guests and how many of them have to travel. if you’re having a destination wedding, sending save the dates six month to a year in advance is a good idea. Although, remember that save the dates are completely optional and many people won’t secure travel or lodging until they receive a real invitation. Traditionally, wedding invitations aren’t sent until six to eight weeks before the

big day, but three months is ideal if traveling is a big consideration. Question: How do I make sure people RSVP? Answer: Unfortunately, not everyone follows invitation protocol and RSVPs on time. It’s frustrating for any event, especially for a wedding, but there are some things you can do to ensure your guests get back to you. Clearly write how to RSVP and by what date. You can include a pre-addressed and stamped card, and offer the option to text, email, or call. If you’re using snail mail, keep in mind guests may follow the rule of having the card post-marked by the RSVP deadline, so make the date two weeks before you need the final head count. Finally, if you have a lot of stragglers, send a courteous email a few days before the RSVP deadline to remind them. ♥

Jon & Katie JULY 29, 2017 PHOTOGRAPHY BY STEFAN AND AUDREY PHOTOGRAPHY  |  WRITTEN BY ISABELLE MORRISON

F

rom the beginning, Jon and Katie knew they were meant to be. Their first encounter was around six years ago, at a small gathering at a mutual friend’s house. Jon, 26 at the time, noticed Katie, 24, wearing a flannel shirt (the true mark of a fellow Seattleite) and conversation flowed from there. There was immediate chemistry. Katie was shy, but fun and easy to talk to. Her occupation as a nurse shone through in her sweet and caring personality. Jon had a contagious sense of humor, making Katie laugh from the start. Just a few days after meeting, they went on their first date. During the early days of their relationship, Katie lived in Tacoma and Jon lived in Seattle. Katie’s work schedule as a nurse would have her on duty for two days then on weekend for three to four days, which she would spend the entirety of with Jon. … continued on the next page

15

Their abundance of time together never felt claustrophobic or pressured. It was natural, and easy going. After only two months of dating, Jon knew this was something special. Four years later, the pair decided to take a trip to Cancun, Mexico. They spent the second day of their vacation exploring the ruins of Chichen Itza. When they got back to the hotel that night, Jon suggested they go for a walk at a nearby beach. It was there that Jon popped the question with a (temporary) fake diamond ring from Amazon. Afterward, they trailed back up to their hotel room where a complimentary bottle of champagne was waiting. Jon presented Katie with a stack of congratulations cards from their loved ones, and a special music playlist he’d made for her. The couple got married in the summer of 2017. When choosing a date and location, good weather and a unique destination were important factors. When they were told it hadn’t rained on July 29 at Roche Harbor in the San Juan Islands in 30 years, the decision seemed clear. Although they had never been to Roche Harbor, they were instantly sold after their first visit. Everything in the area was close to the wedding venue — a dockside bar overlooking the water, a quaint little village with shops and restaurants, and the charming “Shipwreck Beach.” It was the perfect spot for a gorgeous destination wedding, and a fun weekend getaway to catch up with friends and family. Because Katie wanted to use the outdoors and keep decorations to a minimum for a natural feel, the couple was wed near 16 CoutureWeddingsMag.com

the water, surrounded by beautiful flowers and lush greenery in the sunken garden at the Roche Harbor Resort. Katie wore a timeless white, form-fitting dress with a plunging back and long train, along with a flowy white veil edged with lace. Jon wore a navy blue three-piece suit with a navy tie and cufflinks. For a special twist, their wedding ring was passed through the crowd during the ceremony in the “warming of the rings” tradition, so each of their loved ones was given the opportunity to bless their marriage. Everyone was in tears as Jon and Katie read the vows they’d written for each other. “Everybody was so in the moment and feeling the love,” Jon said. “I remember looking around at one point and half the people I know were crying simultaneously.” The reception was held in the resort’s pavilion and courtyard. String lights and elegant chandeliers hung from the ceiling. Decorations were simple navy and gold accents, and romantic bouquets filled with white and blush-colored flowers, along with eucalyptus leaves. Guests raved over a white, pink champagne flavored cake with gold brush detailing and flowers adorning the top, along with incredible appetizers like bacon-wrapped shrimp. “It’s so humbling when you get married,” Katie said. “All of these people who you love so much travel so far for you and stay the night, just to celebrate your relationship. It’s a very humbling experience.” ♥

Yahtzee! Games People Play ENTERTAINING KIDS (AND ADULTS) AT YOUR WEDDING WRITTEN BY KENJI GUTTORP

T

hey’ve endured the unfamiliar, and sometimes uncomfortable, dress-up clothing. They’ve sat quietly, keeping their squirming to a minimum, all through the wedding service, or they’ve performed admirably in their role as impossibly cute ringbearer or flower-petals-thrower. But let’s face it – kids can take only so much of this ceremony stuff. After the how-do-you-dos and I-dos, they probably are more than ready to bust a move. So, what can you do to make your wedding fun for kids? We have some ideas on how to keep kids engaged and entertained while the grown-ups have to be grown-ups — until even they succumb to the lure of fun and games.

GIANT-SIZED GAMES Good outdoors or in, big games are the ticket for small people (though best to have adult supervision on some). Giant Jenga will have kids running for cover and squealing with glee as the blocks come tumbling down. Giant Yahtzee lets them exercise their vocal chords too. BelleWood Acres has Farm Jenga and giant checkers (king me!), along with disc golf for the older kids and seasonal tractor rides out to the cornfields and orchards, which can make for not only a rare experience but fun photo shoot – way different than the traditional family wedding portrait.

ON THE GREEN Get fancy and customize games to fit your wedding theme. Lawn games like cornhole, croquet and hillbilly golf get guests chatting and moving around. If you’re getting married at a golf and country club, see what the rules are for the practice putting green – it’s something that can be done in nice clothes and shoes.

CARNIVAL IDEAS Other interactive activities like a coloring station, face painting, or scavenger hunts are all ways to make your wedding more fun and interactive. If you are at an indoor venue and lawn games are not an option, an indoor photo station can be a blast. Kids love to dress up (and so do adults), so it will likely be a hit for everyone, and gives people something to put on the fridge at home.

CREATE YOUR OWN GAME CENTER Pick a half-dozen of your favorite board games that you and your partner love the most and make the game center an interactive place for kids to learn more about the couple to be. Venues vary in what they offer, but ask. Activities outside the traditional fare can give your wedding extra flair and charm. ♥

Jordan & Payton DECEMBER 30, 2016 PHOTOGRAPHY BY KARLYN BETH, ANDA PHOTOGRAPHY  |  WRITTEN BY NICK JENNER

C

hristina Aguilera and Weezer flew from the speakers as Jordan and Payton Baughman mouthed the words in perfect matrimony. The lip-sync duel was performed moments after their marriage and fit right in with the Harry Potter wedding theme. Jordan was always a big fan of the books, saying they were one of the main reasons she fell in love with reading. Payton, another book lover, had read the Harry Potter books as well, though perhaps with less avidity than Jordan, him being a fantasy lover himself. But Payton reread the entire series nonetheless, just to impress her, Jordan said. He had seen her one day wearing a Harry Potter shirt and quickly seized the opportunity to bond with her, said Jordan, laughing. … continued on the next page

Couture Weddings 2018

21

The two were strangers to each other until they met at an Easter gathering hosted by Jordan’s family. Payton was living with Jordan’s cousin at the time, someone she was very close with, and for a while the three of them hung out as close friends. After six months Payton, despite having been forbidden by his roommate, asked Jordan out. Their first date was Thai food followed by a three-hour stroll through Barnes and Noble. “Our love for literature and books is something we bonded over early on,” Jordan said. The pages of their lives flicked on and eventually it came time to sit down and discuss their futures together: Payton had a job offer in Seattle and Jordan was working toward achieving her degree in elementary education. What next? She’d been expecting it for a while, but Jordan was still surprised when Payton bent down on one knee in the living room. Once they were engaged, the couple decided they didn’t want a celebration that tried to simply meet expectations, but rather something that focused on them. Renting out The Leopold Ballroom, Jordan’s first choice, the two settled on a Harry Potter enchanted library theme and Jordan, passionate about wedding planning, worked with her mother to set everything up. Laid out in dark blues and deep greens to match the color scheme were piles of books for wedding guests to take home 22 CoutureWeddingsMag.com

and read. The books were gathered from nearby bookstores and some from the bride and groom themselves. Those taken from the couple’s own library were placed in a large chest, guarded only by a note: “Start a new adventure with one of our adventures.” Another large book sat alone on a table, with “PB and J’s Best Day Ever” scrawled on the cover. You wouldn’t find anything under the cover but delicious chocolate cake. But, of course, that was the idea. Even the flowers were books. Well, pages of them at least. At every table stood a bouquet of adventures carefully torn from one of the many Harry Potter novels. When the guests were all seated and the ceremony began, Jordan walked down the aisle in a beautiful, Maggie Sottero dress, all white with lacing on the top and sleeves. Harry Potter pages were wrapped around her shoes and flowered into her bouquet. Waiting for her eagerly at the end of the walkway was Payton, dressed in a Ravenclaw-blue suit and a Slytheringreen tie. It was then, before family and friends, that Payton, a Ravenclaw fantasy fan, married Jordan, a Slytherin mysterynovel lover, and together they turned the first page of their lives as husband and wife. ♥

Bri & Brady AUGUST 19, 2017 PHOTOGRAPHY BY CLINTON JAMES PHOTOGRAPHY  |  WRITTEN BY KENJI GUTTORP

ri first met Brady at a Mariners game. The meeting was short. At the time Bri was living in Bellingham and Brady was in Seattle. It might not have seemed like love at first sight, but in hindsight, the writing was on the (center field) wall. The first impression was enough. Bri eventually accepted Brady’s advance and a short time later they went on their first date together at a bar in Seattle. Brady was upfront and direct, leaving a lasting impression. “He basically grilled me on our first date,” Bri recalled. “He went down a list of questions he had, a list of what is right for him and every single answer I gave to his questions were, to a tee, what he was looking for.” Brady couldn’t wait for the next time he would see Bri, texting her immediately after she left their date. “We have to meet up again. When can I see you?” A few days later, after a long day of work and not wanting to wait until the weekend, the two met at Tulalip for dinner. … continued on the next page

“We were pretty much married after our first date. We were inseparable,” Bri said. For the next year, they dated long-distance, either Bri would drive to Seattle or Brady to Bellingham, keeping it light and fun with weekend trips until Bri moved to Seattle. After a year-and-a-half of dating, Brady brought up his plan to move to San Diego. What came next was something Brady might not have expected. Bri said she pointedly suggested he should either propose or she wouldn’t be going to San Diego. “Well, I am not going to propose to you,” Bri remembered him saying, “and I was like, ‘OK, fine. Then I am not going!” Brady, perhaps realizing his mistake, proposed shortly after at Bri’s family’s beach house on Lummi Island. He planned a huge family gathering for the weekend, where he would then pop the question. But the plans fell through. They decided to go anyway to get away. But before they left, Brady asked Bri’s father for permission for Bri’s hand, and got his blessing. Armed with a bottle of wine, two chairs propped on the beach to watch the sunset, cheese and crackers, and a GoPro set up behind some logs to capture the moment, Brady pulled Bri in front of the camera, got on one knee and proposed. “It was 32 CoutureWeddingsMag.com

amazing,” Bri said. “He somehow got away to set up hundreds of candles throughout the entire cabin. It was all lit up when we went inside.” They kept things simple, beautiful and elegant in a more traditional sense. The bride selected neutral and champagne colors, the bridesmaids all wore champagne-colored Vera Wang v-neck style dresses. The groomsmen wore matching dark navy suits with white vests. Personal touches were woven throughout their wedding, giving the reception and ceremony an intimate feeling. “Our ceremony was one of my favorite parts of our wedding,” Bri remembers. “My brother officiated our wedding. I think he should officiate everyone’s wedding.” Brady’s sister sang a rendition of “Come Away with Me,” by Norah Jones. To both, having family there to lend a hand planning and pulling off the wedding was paramount. It was important for them to have them involved in the ceremony. “My reception was like a dream. It was the best day of my life,” Bri said. “Everyone you love is around, in one spot having fun. It’s an amazing feeling to have all those people there for you and around you. I never wanted it to end.” ♥

Wedding Cake or Donut Bar? INSPIRATIONAL CATERING WRITTEN BY KATE GALAMBOS

W

ith a booming “foodie culture” in the Pacific Northwest, the reception can be a chance to have fun and get creative with catering. However, how you choose to serve your guests will set the tone for the event. Seated serving keeps the atmosphere formal and avoids lines that can form at buffets. On the other hand, food trucks give a hip, trendy vibe that appeals to a younger crowd. Whether you choose a conventional or unconventional caterer, be sure to look beyond just the food.

CONVENTIONAL Seated Serving (Plated): Allows guests to stay seated while their dishes come to them, avoiding long waits in line for food. Often is the most expensive style of catering because of the added labor for serving. Family-Style Seated: Offers a happy medium between seated serving and a buffet. Rather than bringing out individual plates, servers bring large family style platters to each table, which are then passed around. If you choose this catering option, be sure 34 CoutureWeddingsMag.com

to have tables big enough to accommodate big serving platters. Cost is lower than seated serving because family style requires fewer wait staff. Buffet Style: Usually the most inexpensive option as long as guests don’t all go for thirds. Buffets are set on long tables where guest can serve themselves. Many guests prefer buffets simply due to the sheer number of options, but lines can make for a chaotic environment.

UNCONVENTIONAL Food Trucks: Food trucks have been making a splash throughout the Pacific Northwest, making them an accessible catering option. This fun alternative can allow you to give your guests a variety of choices and experience new flavors. This informal option is not for everyone due to its casual nature. Be sure to factor in time of year and weather to avoid eating in the rain. Donut Bar: Why keep dessert designated as a cake-only affair? Donuts not only taste great, but look cute, colorful and fun as a serve-yourself-buffet. Guests will love getting to pick their favorite flavor, and you’ll love the low price tag. Pizza is a favorite for just about anyone, meaning it is a solid bet for most wedding guests. This inexpensive, unconventional option can also cater to just about any palate or diet because of the wide variety of toppings and crust. Gusto Wood Fired Pizza is a highly-rated local option. Prices start at just $15 a person for an all-you-can-eat cheese pizza buffet and include compostable plates, napkins, and flatware. Even the “all-everything” option is a bargain at $30 per person. What could be easier?

Call to Reserve your Fairy Tale 360.676.2500

Open catering options allow your event to be as unique as you are.

Pot Bars: Believe it or not, in states where recreational marijuana has been legalized, “pot bars” have been spotted at wedding receptions. Much like a bar offering drinks, a pot bar usually comes in the form of a long table with different varieties of marijuana and ways to enjoy. And behind the table, your friendly “budtender” will be able to answer all of your guests’ questions. Single-Serve Ice Cream Cups/Sundae Bar: Another delicious alternative to the traditional wedding cake, ice cream appeals to just about anyone. A sundae bar works as both food and as an activity, especially if you expect lots of kids on your big day. ♥

Amanda & Daniel JULY 16, 2017 PHOTOGRAPHY BY MATT PRIESTMAN PHOTOGRAPHY  |  WRITTEN BY KATE GALAMBOS

W

ith the dreamy 500-year-old Thornewood Castle behind them, Daniel and Amanda Blashaw said “I do” amongst friends and family on July 16th. The couple planned their wedding around a pledge to keep themselves in every detail. “When I say ‘I do’, I want to feel completely me, and I want you to feel completely you,” Daniel had told then-fiancee Amanda. Keeping the wedding in tune with their authentic themselves meant tying the details to their home, western Washington. To achieve a true Pacific Northwest-inspired wedding, the couple served Washington brew, wine, and food, named the reception tables after favorite Washington places and honored the state’s beauty with … continued on the next page

accent colors. The ceremony took place in theThornewood Castle garden while it was in full bloom. A trail of white petals guided the wedding party to each of their places at the ceremony and vibrant blue, pink, and violet flowers surrounded the bride and groom as they said their vows. To bring the outdoors in, as true Washingtonians, the reception was accented with blues and greens in the Thornewood Great Hall. Local Issaquah Farmers Market flowers were used for hand-made decorations and centerpieces. “Western Washington and its beauty is an important pillar in our love story. Both of us were born here, raised here, met here, and fell in love here,” the couple said. Daniel and Amanda met as students at Western Washington University seven years ago. Amanda grew up with Daniel’s roommate and met Daniel while visiting her friend. She found Daniel in the kitchen, complimented his eyes, and left before he could get her name. Later on, Amanda noticed a motorcycle in the garage, only to find it was bright-eyed Daniel’s. He offered to give her a ride and the two rode off into the sunset on Chuckanut Drive. “I went looking for a beer in my own kitchen and found my wife!” Daniel said. Much like their first date, the proposal seemed plucked from the pages of a story book. 38 CoutureWeddingsMag.com

Daniel proposed in Kauai during sunset at the Beach House Restaurant amongst the crashing waves and sea breeze. As romantic as it was, the proposal didn’t go completely smoothly. Amanda had been convinced that Daniel would propose to her while on the trip, but was disappointed when her mom never called to tell her that Daniel had asked her parents for permission. Convinced that her mom would not hide this from her, Amanda assumed the proposal would not happen even after finding a small black box in Daniel’s suitcase. “I assumed it was a necklace and re-hid it,” Amanda said. Much to his dismay, Daniel discovered that the ring box had been moved and was sure Amanda knew his plan. And yet, both were wrong. When Daniel led Amanda out to beach at sunset, each wound up surprised. And as a cherry on top, Daniel had a professional photographer compile a Bachelor-esque movie recording of the engagement and all the details surrounding it. For couples who are beginning the planning process, the Blashaws recommend keeping the day about you. Friends and family love you and will be supportive no matter what. Stick together as a team on the most important choices and let the small stuff go. ♥

Unusual Gift Registries

actually show up as funds that the couple can spend how they wish. Even so, it’s a nicer way of giving money.

FOR DIYERS WRITTEN BY CATHERINE TORRES

W

edding gift registries are a relatively new concept. In the 1920s Chicago department store Marshall Field’s introduced the wedding registry, giving newlyweds better control over the gifts they receive. Traditional registries include the makings of a home: kitchen gadgets, linens, crystal glassware, and home furnishings. But what happens when a couple already has a home set up, or isn’t interested in storing 12 sets of fine china? Enter unusual gift registries. These days, there’s a gift registry out there for every couple, it’s simply a matter of knowing what you want your guests to gift.

FOR THOSE THAT WANT A LITTLE BIT OF EVERYTHING Hybrid registries like Zola allow for complete customization. Couples can register for gifts from numerous stores, cash to help pay for the wedding, honeymoon funds, and even charities. It’s ideal for couples that want just a few more kitchen gadgets, but also want help paying for their honeymoon airfare, and want to pay it forward with a charitable donation. The internet lists dozens or alternative and non-traditional registry sites. With a little bit of searching, you can break out of the box of traditional gift registries. Not only will you and your spouse-to-be get stuff you actually will use, but looking through these unusual gift registries will be a breath of fresh air for your guests who’ve bought newlyweds one too many toasters.

FOR TRAVELERS There are more and more sites helping couples register for their honeymoon itineraries. Sites like Traveler’s Joy allow couples to list portions of their honeymoon vacation which guests can then purchase. The sites usually take a small percentage or flat processing fee which either the couple or guest can pay for. Many times, the gifts for a “fancy dinner” or “couple’s massage” 40 CoutureWeddingsMag.com

If you and your spouse-to-be love spending weekends sanding, painting, and building, then a gift registry at your local home improvement store is perfect. Register for tools, hardware, paint, and even appliances. If you want to update your home, but are apprehensive as to where to start, most home improvement stores offer free design help and even an option to purchase project management.

FOR THE OUTDOORSY COUPLES More the wilderness type? Head over to REI to start a registry for new camping gear or skis. This would be a great opportunity to tie in a honeymoon fund registry too, if your idea of a romantic getaway involves black diamonds or breathtaking views following a 10-mile trek in the woods. REI also allows guests to make birthday and other celebration registries, a good thing to remember when your bike-loving husband needs new gear and his birthday party guests want to know what to buy for him.

FOR PIZZA LOVERS Domino’s Pizza has a wedding registry. You read that correctly. Couples can register for a $60 “2 a.m. Bachelor Party Feast,” a $25 “Wedding Night” gift, and even a $25 “Post-Honeymoon Adjustment to Real Life” gift. We might renew our vows just to register for pizza.

FOR DRINK LOVERS Register for wine, beer, and spirit clubs to keep your glasses full long after your wedding day. New York-based wine purveyor Sherry-Lehmann allows couples to create wine gift registries that cover a range of prices. Another option is to check in with your local favorite brewer or winery to see if they offer a beverage club, then request a membership in a hybrid gift registry, like Zola. With so many local wineries and breweries in our neighborhood, it’s worth asking them to view their club and registry options. ♥
