It’s not hard to see that beautiful roses with their heady scent symbolize intimacy and romance. A mainstay in the floral bouquet, the ancient Greeks and Romans associated roses with Aphrodite and Venus, the goddesses of love.

ane and Lynda first met over an intense game of ping pong. Neither of them remembers the winner, but both remember the fun they had together. Dane had recently moved up from California and was rooming with a friend of Lynda’s. A few years after the ping pong game Lynda temporarily moved in with them, as luck would have it. She and Dane got to know each other better during that time and started dating soon after. On March third, a very cold but sunny day, the two set out for a lovely hike to the Big Four Ice Caves. Although the caves were a beautiful sight, Lynda was worried about ice falling on them. Dane began telling her about why March third was important; it was his grandparents’ 70th wedding anniversary. When Lynda finally stopped taking photos and turned to Dane, he had a beautiful diamond ring for her. The ring had originally been his grandmother’s, then was passed on to his mother, and then to him to give to Lynda. … continued on the next page

Much of the wedding was put together DIY-style. Dane and Lynda made their own invitations, and even brandied cherries for drinks themselves. “Our main mission was to enjoy each other and our company and spend less time worrying about formality,” Lynda said. The two made an old fashioned bar out of a chest they found at Goodwill. Tables were decorated with small vases — also found at Goodwill — and flowers from the Farmers Market. Centerpieces were made from small cheese wheels in the shape of wedding cakes. An important detail that Dane and Lynda included as an element in their wedding was GPS coordinates. “GPS coordinates are something Dane and I plot for the special moments in our life,” Lynda said. They plotted the coordinates to where they would get married and placed it on their invitations. The GPS theme carried from decorations to the table numbers at the reception.  Dane’s father officiated the wedding and the two were married outside at a point near the water overlooking the lake at the quaint and charming Lakedale Resort. After the ceremony, they rowed back across the lake to the reception, which took place in a lodge at

the resort. “We wanted a venue where we could bring our own caterer and have all of our family together in one location for the whole weekend,” Lynda said. Family included their dog, Roo, who was the “ring girl” for the wedding. Lynda wore a beautiful white trumpet silhouette dress with a strapless sweetheart neckline. The dress was purchased at a charity show for $300. Even Roo was dressed for the occasion in a white, home-made tutu. The newlyweds first dance was to “Thinking Out Loud” by Ed Sheeran. “I had heard the song at work before it had come out as a single, and before we were engaged,” Lynda said. “The first thing I thought when I heard it was, ‘I’m going to dance with Dane to this at our wedding someday.’”  After the wedding, the two chose to go “glamping” at the resort, staying in a canvas cabin nestled in the woods. They had electricity, a fireplace, private shower, and even complimentary foot warmers delivered each night. [

Picking the Picture-Perfect Venue WRITTEN BY FRANCES BADGETT

he glint of the sun on the water can either be beautiful and romantic, or harsh and punishing. A lovely sunset over the lake can end up being a massive glare in the eyes of your guests, making everyone in your photos squint. In our part of the country, rain contingency should be available year-round, especially in what we commonly refer to as Juneuary. So how does a bride plan for great photos? â&#x20AC;Ś continued on the next page

STEP ONE IS TO CHOOSE YOUR TIME OF DAY CAREFULLY. The hour just before sunset is called The Golden Hour by filmmakers and photographers for a reason — the light is slanted, glowing, perfect for capturing the halo of sun behind your hair or the romantic glint off your jewelry. Mid-day sun is harsh, bringing out many shadows and unwanted angles. The perfect light for outdoor portraiture is actually lightly overcast and misty — not the ideal wedding light. But if you end up with a rainy day wedding, don’t despair. Your photos may end up better than you remember.

STEP TWO IS TO BE AWARE OF THE LOCATION. Get to know it. If possible, walk through it before the big day with your photographer. Pay attention to where light reflects, how it enters windows in the middle of the afternoon, what the glint off of nearby bodies of water is like. Your photographer will likely know how to

work with these things, but it’s good to choose a place to stand with your family that isn’t fraught with trouble. If you can stretch your budget for two photographers, do so. Often one can catch a sense of the whole picture, while the other checks for details, and vice-versa. Water is beautiful. Water makes everything glow. But it can throw light and shadow in unpredictable ways. If you want a sunset beach photo, or a shot from a boardwalk overlooking a bay, make sure you work with your photographer beforehand. Photo editing and a good couple of shooters can take the anxiety out of your day, but making sure that you aren’t complicating the process is a good idea. The photographer is going to be really focused on what you want out of their work, so it’s good to give a little bit back by thinking about what works best for them, too. Remember, the best results come of clear communication, so if you must have that squinty photo of your bridal party, maybe also have a backup under the soft light of a tent. [

t was one of those magical dates — drinks that become more drinks, then dinner, then a night cap — four restaurants, hours of conversation, the way a perfect date is supposed to be. For Kat and Nick, there was an immediate spark. “At the time, Kat was living in Vancouver and we went to a few of her favorite Gastown haunts and for our one-year anniversary we went back for a rerun of the first date.” Kat is Canadian, and accommodating both sides of the border took some extra planning. They started with a legal ceremony at the Seattle courthouse, and then followed up a few months later with a more personal ceremony at a farm in Squamish. A civil service followed by a celebratory wedding is not uncommon in Europe, but isn’t as typical here. But for Kat and Nick, it was perfect. … continued on the next page

Surprising Kat with a proposal took some doing, since the wedding rings had been ordered, her heirloom engagement ring was off being sized, and the paperwork for the legal ceremony had to be completed. But Nick managed to surprise her anyway. He arranged to have the jeweler email Kat and tell her that the ring would be delayed. After Kat’s regular Sunday horseback ride, Nick arrived to pick her up. Just as Nick got on one knee, Kat’s horse started dragging her away. Kat said yes, and the adventure began. Kat said, “Simply saying the vows is so romantic in itself and so for us having something big and fancy just wasn’t us. We wanted simple, intimate, and fun so we went for a courthouse wedding in Seattle and we had a big celebration on our friends’ beautiful farm later in the year.” For the Seattle wedding, Nick’s mom flew out from Cincinnati, and Kat’s mom drove down from Vancouver. They all stayed at the Edgewater Hotel. Kat and Nick had a fireplace and a beautiful view. “The day of the wedding was relaxed and luxurious from beginning to end. We had brunch on the waterfront before walking over to Pike Place Market to choose the flowers for the bouquet.” Kat chose a spray of tulips, baby’s breath, and hyacinths. “It smelled incredible.” 24 CoutureWeddingsMag.com

For the wedding lunch, they picked up artisan breads, cheese, fresh fruit, and champagne and went back to the hotel to relax. After their light lunch, they went to the courthouse and said their vows on the top floor overlooking Seattle. Kat said, “It was beautiful. Moreover the judge who married us was a really incredible woman, she was so invested and heartfelt.” After the ceremony, they dined at Canlis, which Kat says is no doubt the best meal of their lives. The next day, Nick had a final surprise for Kat — a honeymoon in San Francisco. The following ceremony in Squamish was a simple and beautiful country wedding at a log home, with willow trees and glacier views. “We had a salmon dinner, pies for dessert and our good friends honky tonk/blue grass band got the dancing started. They surprised us with ‘Walking after Midnight,’ and so we had our first dance, impromptu and perfectly romantic...which fit just right with the rest of our story.” [

Catering Complexity How to plan for food restrictions Written by Frances Badgett

luten-free vegan mother-in-law-to-be? Vegetarian groom? Maid of honor with Celiac disease? There are a lot more considerations for wedding catering than there were even a decade ago. Considering your guests’ restrictions isn’t just good etiquette, it’s life-saving to that parent whose child can’t be in a room with a single peanut. But it puts a lot of pressure on the bride (and caterers) to come up with big meals that can please a range of diets. Step one is to find out from your guests what their food restrictions are. Separate the deadly allergies from the preferences. Those who insist on non-GMO food can take a back seat to those who have allergies or digestive disorders. It is not okay to ask your guests if they need GF foods for their health or if it’s a choice, and it’s never okay to question someone’s allergies. Next, there will be vegetarians at every event. For their restrictions, go with vegan. It’s fairly simple to make vegetarian food vegan, depending on the cuisine, and vegetarians are happy with vegan items. Vegan cuisine can also take care of the GF and dairy-free restrictions, so having meat and vegan options is a good bet. Kosher options may require a separate caterer, as Kosher has as much to do with preparation as it does with type of foods, so be sure to have your guests state this as a dietary observance. For plain old common sense, it’s a good idea to omit whole nuts from your event. The next step is to find cuisine that you will enjoy that can accommodate restrictions. Some cuisines are more easily adaptable for varying degrees of allergies and preferences than others. Greek is pretty versatile, though it can be dairy-heavy. Gluten-free pasta makes Italian an easy choice. Your caterer can probably find a paella or Asian dish that will work with most dietary restrictions. You might want to plan for an additional gf-vegan cake for those who can’t have dairy, eggs, or gluten. Getting those preferences back from your guests early in the process will be key in planning well, but a few gf-vegan cupcakes just in case will probably serve you well. The goal is make sure that your guests get a good meal, regardless of their restrictions. People with dietary restrictions have lived a long time accommodating to others’ diets. Including them is both good manners, and potentially life-saving. [

et up by a mutual friend, Chad and Cory felt a spark from the moment they met. Although they lived four hours away from each other, the distance couldn’t keep them apart. The two dated long distance until Cory was able to move up to Bellingham. Since then they have purchased their first home, adopted two dogs, and married. The proposal happened over the Fourth of July weekend when Cory and Chad took a camping trip at Patos Island to celebrate the holiday. One evening the two decided to hiked out to a charming lighthouse and catch the sunset. Chad asked to take a photo but instead surprised Cory by getting down on one knee and proposing. She said yes. …

“Our wedding day was incredibly personal and fun for so many reasons.” The ceremony was officiated by the couple’s longtime friend who originally introduced them. Each element of the wedding had a personal touch, from handmade decorations and handpicked bouquets to the location. The two held their wedding in their own backyard, which they had spent the last two years remodeling and landscaping. Many of the guests who attended had helped them along the way so it was a perfect setting to showcase all of their hard work. “Every time we look at our backyard it’s a great reminder of such a wonderful day, and we can’t wait to build more memories here.” The dress was a perfect combination of comfort and beauty. Cory captured a vintage Hollywood look and feel with her gown from the Maggie Sottero collection. It was alabaster white, strapless fit and flare, made from smooth satin fabric; perfect for dancing in. The couple’s first dance together was to “Ho Hey” by the Lumineers. They created a playlist of their own song collection over the years, giving their wedding music a personal touch. The dinner was a true Pacific Northwest style meal with fresh salmon and halibut caught by the groom, his father, and friends. A 30 CoutureWeddingsMag.com

buffet dinner full of northwest flavor catered by Aramark accompanied the delicious fresh fish. For dessert, guests were asked to bring their favorite treats to share. This mouth-watering dessert potluck included caramel corn, lemon wedding cookies, meringue, white chocolate blondies, oatmeal-chocolate chip cookies, and even donut holes from Lafeens Donuts, Cory’s favorite. After dinner and dancing, the party relocated to the Island Mariner for a gorgeous sunset cruise around Bellingham Bay. Surrounded by friends and family, the newlyweds enjoyed the spectacular views, drank local beer, and danced the night away together. “It’s hard to top getting to marry your best friend in your backyard with all your friends and family by your side and then take them out on Bellingham Bay for a beautiful sunset evening.” When the sun had set and the cruise had ended, Cory and Chad made their exit on Chad’s father’s boat. It brought them to downtown Bellingham, where the wedding festivities continued at the Green Frog Tavern. The restaurant opened up its kitchen to make the hungry party guests grilled cheese sandwiches. [

hile attending a mutual friend’s birthday party at Western Washington University, Adam spotted Ashley across the room. He made his way over to her and introduced himself. Ashely was shy, and didn’t know what to think of him, but the two hung out for the night. The next morning Ashley was pleasantly surprised when the phone rang and Adam’s number popped up. That phone call started what they both lovingly refer to as their “Date Weekend Marathon.” On Friday, the two went to the Woodland Park Zoo followed by dinner and a movie. On Saturday, they had a romantic dinner together at Newcastle Golf Club. On Sunday, they enjoyed the day at a Mariner’s game and evening at the Seattle Pier. After eight amazing years together, Adam popped the question. He wanted everything to be perfect; he had the ring, and planned a romantic weekend trip to Whistler, B.C. The two spent a lovely day together enjoying the beautiful weather. After a delicious dinner by a cozy open fire, Adam took Ashley on an evening stroll through the village. …

“While on the way to the lower village, on the Whistler Bridge, Adam all of a sudden stopped.” Ashley said. “He was hunched over like he was tying a shoe lace and all of a sudden he jumped back up took my hand and quickly put something on my finger. As I looked down confused, it took a moment for me to realize what was happening.” The proposal took Ashley by surprise and she exclaimed “But you didn’t even ask me anything!” to which Adam replied, “It’s implied.” Ashley, of course, said yes, and the two enjoyed a beautiful moment together full of love and laughter. The couple spent the next year-and-a-half planning their wedding together. The goal was to celebrate their journey together, and they wanted the wedding to represent them. “The entire day was fantastic and we could not have done it without the support of our family, friends, and wedding planner, Wendy Wojcik.” Their bridal party was a special addition to their day. “The bridal party consisted of the best siblings and friends we could have asked for. I know every couple says that, but we feel truly fortunate for the people that stood with us that day.” 44 CoutureWeddingsMag.com

The wedding was held at Semiahmoo Resort, and the décor reflected the waterfront location with a contemporary and classic style spiced with nautical touches. The color palette was black, white, and champagne with just a touch of blush pink. The flowers, an important touch to the day, included beautiful hydrangeas, peonies, and white anemone flowers. Ashley’s bouquet tied all of the flowers together, and a gorgeous flower wall at the reception topped it off. The bridesmaids wore black floor length tulle dresses in sillouettes of their choice, with sparkly gold shoes. The groomsmen wore classic black shawl collar tuxedos. The dress, from Marcella’s La Boutique in Seattle, was a Vera Wang classic Ghillian. It had beautifully gathered tulle with a sweetheart neckline and asymmetrical waist detail. Ashley wore a simple black sash around her waist tied in a bow in the back. At the reception, the dance floor was packed the whole night. As the guests danced the night away they enjoyed delicious food catered by Semiahmoo Resort. To start there was framboise and brie salad and the entrée was orange horseradish crusted Chilean sea bass. “We consider ourselves very blessed,” Ashley said. “Everyone had waited a long time for us to be married and the wait was definitely worth it.” [
