WELCOME TO THE NORTH SOUND. “Nature is not a place to visit. It is home.” — Gary Snyder
OUR NOISE POLICY: MAKE A LOT OF IT. Hear that? It’s the sound of students giving back. Audio Technology, Music, and Society students at Fairhaven College of Interdisciplinary Studies help run Bellingham Girls Rock Camp. They teach young girls how to shred on guitars, blast drums, belt lyrics, and capture it all in a professional recording. The camp uses music to inspire female empowerment and create social change. Yeah, it gets a little loud sometimes. But hey, that’s rock n’ roll.

Where We Call Home

W
elcome to the North Sound, where we call home! As you’re out and about exploring our beautiful area, look around and see what we see — mountains on one side, ocean views on the other, not to mention the surrounding lakes, trails, and beautiful greenery. Within an hour we can be snowboarding on Mount Baker or out on a sailboat exploring the San Juan Islands…it is no wonder we love to call this place home. While you are here, there are a few things you won’t want to miss. Are you a beer drinker? In June 2015, Priceonomics ranked the Bellingham metro area as the snobbiest place in the country when it comes to beer. We have multiple award-winning craft breweries within miles of each other — my favorites are Kulshan Brewing Company, Boundary Bay Brewery, and Chuckanut Brewery. The village of Fairhaven, with its art galleries, quaint shops, and great dining, offers a unique urban shopping experience that you won’t want to miss. Do you like the seaside? Head to Birch Bay, where we’ve got a large public beach, water slides, clam digging, great restaurants, and paddle boarding. All of these make for a wonderful experience. Whatever you do, don’t forget whale watching — we are surrounded by the immense beauty of the San Juan Islands and the orcas, otters, seals, and other marine life that inhabits our shores and waters. An orca sighting is an experience that will last a lifetime. If you’re looking for antiques and art galleries, there are quite a few options. La Conner is one of my favorites spots, a quaint town located along the Swinomish Channel in Skagit Valley. It is a great destination, with wonderful dining and shopping opportunities. Around the corner from La Conner is Anacortes, the gateway to the San Juan Islands. Take a leisurely stroll through the city’s core, which houses many boutiques, gift shops, restaurants, and galleries. There are also many large regional events throughout the year, like the Anacortes Arts Festival in August, which draws hundreds of artisans and thousands of visitors. Catch the ferry and check out the islands — each has its own flavor and style. One last note…if you’re here in April, be sure to check out the annual world-renowned Skagit Valley Tulip Festival. As you can see, the adventures our area offers are numerous…just get out and explore! The friendliness of the people will astonish you — it’s why so many people from around the globe come to visit and end up staying. Whether for a few nights or a decade, welcome home to the North Sound.

WORTH MORE THAN A THOUSAND WORDS A little more than 50 years ago, Apollo 8 astronauts William “Bill” Anders, Jim Lovell, and Frank Borman were the first to enter lunar orbit. The men’s mission consisted of 10 orbits around the moon, during which time Anders was tasked with photographing the moon’s dark side — the side hidden from Earth. On December 24, 1968, Anders had his camera out to shoot the moon’s surface — a bleak, forbidding landscape of gray craters and mountains. Despite the novelty of seeing the moon from space, it was the sight of Earth emerging on the moon’s horizon that left the astronauts agape. According to the ship’s transcript, Anders cried, “Look at that picture over there! Here’s the Earth coming up. Wow, is that pretty!” No one had ever seen Earth like this: beautiful, fragile, a suspended speck that contained everything the astronauts — and the entire human race — had ever known or loved. The year 1968 had been a turbulent period of social and political upheaval in the U.S. The nightly news broadcast body counts of American troops in an unpopular war in Vietnam. In one threemonth span, Martin Luther King Jr. and Bobby Kennedy had been assassinated. Riots occurred regularly in the streets, and more broke out during the Democratic National Convention in Chicago. Then came Apollo 8 and, with it, Anders’ photo. Seen from Apollo 8’s vantage point, Anders’ photo, “Earthrise,” did not show borderlines or warring countries. It showed our home. The now-famous photo brought to light Earth’s fragility and is even credited with igniting the environmental movement in the following decade. HERITAGE FLIGHT MUSEUM Anders, now in his eighties, lives with his wife, Valerie, in Washington’s Skagit Valley, where aviation remains a fundamental part of his life. In 1996, he founded the Heritage Flight Museum in Bellingham. The museum is now located in Burlington at the Skagit Regional Airport. Scattered amid the museum’s collection of vintage aircraft, one can find multiple references to Anders’ 1968 Apollo flight. A framed copy of “Earthrise,” signed by the crew, is also on display, along with other artifacts. Anders’ resume doesn’t stop at astronaut, museum-founder, or even world-famous photographer. After space travel, he was appointed to
the president’s Atomic Energy Commission, served as the ambassador to Norway, and worked as a successful top executive at both General Electric and Textron. Only later, wanting to pursue a project closer to heart, did he open the Heritage Flight Museum. Today, two of Anders’ sons, Alan and Greg, run the museum along with their father. The museum’s mission is simple: to tell the stories of U.S. combat veterans through the collection’s 14 antique “warbird” planes. The majority of the museum’s aircraft were donated by Bill Anders and Valerie, as well as private donors. A few of Greg Anders’ personal planes are on display. The collection features giants like the A-1 Skyraider, which was used as an armed search-and-rescue vehicle during the Vietnam War and is one of only seven still flying in the world. According to Greg Anders, the plane burns about 1.5 gallons of gas per minute — about three at takeoff — and weighs about 7,500 pounds. Each plane appears to have been meticulously placed in the hangar like a jigsaw puzzle. Walking from one to the next involves ducking and weaving. The planes aren’t held behind velvet ropes — you can actually reach out and touch history. When the weather’s good, you can see and hear history too, during the museum’s monthly air shows from April to October. “You get to see [the planes] live and breathe here,” Greg Anders says. The Anders men still visit the skies regularly in their favorite aircraft. Greg Anders, who saw combat during Operation Iraqi Freedom, likes to fly the Skyraider along with his other favorites, the “Hog Wild Gunner” and the P-51 Mustang. “There is nothing quite like hearing the Skyraider start up,” Greg Anders says. “It is quite the experience.” NEW HORIZONS The Heritage Flight Museum is planning a big expansion project, set for completion in 2020. It would nearly double the museum’s size, creating room for more hangar space and two additional education rooms to tell the story of Bill Anders’ trip to the moon. More than 50 years later, we could still use a reminder to consider Earth from an outside perspective. “We came all this way to explore the moon,” Bill Anders famously said, “and the most important thing is that we discovered the earth.”

See, Make, Play Local Art Resources for the Five Senses By Becky Mandelbaum
B
efore I moved to Washington, a friend of mine who lives in Seattle tried to sell me on the state. “You would love it here,” she said. “It’s beautiful — there’s mountains and water and trees and really great food.” “But it’s so rainy,” I whined — a classic out-of-towner grievance. I could practically hear her rolling her eyes over the phone. “Think about it,” she said, “half the year you can hole up and write!” I recall this conversation every fall, when Washington pulls a gray blanket over its head and the days grow darker, time slows down. Although my first instinct is always to book a ticket somewhere sunny, I eventually remember that the fall and winter are perfect opportunities for hunkering down and turning inward. In this way, Washington is an artist’s paradise. You can spend the summer seeking out adventure and beauty, and then while away the winter months turning this inspiration into something tangible: a painting, a song, a story. Find out what to hear, see, touch, taste, and smell in our corner of the world, plus an extra category dedicated to play. Whether it’s a concert, an art show, a poetry reading, or a virtual reality escape, there are plenty of ways to keep the creative juices flowing all year long.

he Pacific Northwest is its own art gallery, with natural wonders tucked into every corner. With so many picturesque beaches, forests, and alpine vistas nearby, it’s always a little sad when rainy weather obscures these views or hinders us from adventuring as far as we might like. Luckily, there’s also plenty of beauty to find indoors, at museums, galleries, and art shows.
Located in the quaint and quirky town of La Conner, this museum regularly hosts rotating exhibitions from artists across the Pacific Northwest as well as exhibitions from its permanent collection of art. If you’re planning a visit to La Conner, the MoNA — and its gift store — are a mandatory stop. In order to offer access to as many visitors as possible, admission to the museum is free. 121 First St., La Conner,

Ann Morris — Sculpture Woods In her sculptures, artist Ann Morris captures the intimate, primitive, and spiritual relationship between humans and nature. Her private studio on Lummi Island is surrounded by nearly 15 acres of trees, among which stand more than a dozen of her bronze sculptures. The sculptures are breathtaking, celebratory, and emotionally charged, the kind of art that gives you chills and leaves you contemplating larger themes for days to come. One depicts a human/animal form decomposing into the mossy forest floor. Another portrays a woman held aloft by a minotaur-esque monster, representing the unity of the feminine and masculine. In 2018, Morris donated the Sculpture Woods to Western Washington University, which will use the space to enhance its arts curriculum. To view the sculptures, you can book an appointment or visit for free on the first Saturday of each month, when the grounds are open to the public. 3851 Legoe

Touch W
hen I hear the word art, I often think of paintings on a gallery wall or pieces of pottery concealed in an off-limits glass case. But some art is meant to be touched — both in the process of creating it and during the experience of admiring it. Here are a few nearby places where you can engage with the art of touch.
We covered what you can expect to see at the Pacific Northwest Quilt & Fiber Arts Museum, but there’s also plenty to do, learn, and touch. The museum regularly offers workshops in everything from quilt making and basket weaving to classes that explore how to create a hand-bound leather journal. The quilt making classes cater to quilters of different experience levels, exploring specific topics in the art, such as working with circles or employing various color palettes.
Ragfinery Everyone has a dress, shirt, or jacket they love that’s falling apart. Rather than give up on beloved old clothes, why not learn to fix them? The sewing and crafting classes at Ragfinery help you give new life to old fabric, keeping old clothes out of the landfill and bringing beautiful, upcycled pieces into your wardrobe and home. Learn the basics of fabric repair with courses like Upcycle Sewing and Marvelous Mending or explore a new craft such as needle felting, toymaking, rug braiding, weaving, or indigo dying. All classes are taught by local artists, helping to strengthen creative communities and inspire new, environmentally friendly projects. 1421 N. Forest St., Bellingham, 360.738.6977, ragfinery.com

Since 2011, the Bread Lab — a “laboratory” run through Washington State University but located in Burlington — has been exploring the complicated science behind bread-making. Over the years, the lab has yielded some pretty incredible results, including creating a healthier tortilla chip for the restaurant chain, Chipotle. Who knew? Now, you too can get in on the Bread Lab fun with King Arthur Flour’s Baking School. Although the baking school started in Vermont — and King Arthur Flour has been supplying America with flour since the days of the Revolution — the school now operates this second location in our own Skagit Valley. The employee-owned company offers classes for all levels of baker, ranging from introductory courses to intensive classes that last up to a week long. The Skagit campus offers classes for kids, home bakers, and professionals. 11768 Westar

What would you get if you fused a sculpture with an instrument and then decided the whole thing was actually a toy? The result might be something like the Interactive Exhibits at Mindport. The hands-on multisensory exhibits are meant to be touched, heard, seen, and manipulated. The interactive gallery is filled with various inventions, each meant to engage the senses in a novel way. One exhibit, called “Gator,” consists of a vintage rotary phone — if you dial the right number, you might spot a little light-up alligator hiding inside the machine. Another exhibit, “Backwards Speech,” lets you record your speech and then play it backwards at various speeds. Dirty Dan Harris Steakhouse has been serving up class in Bellingham’s Fairhaven district for nearly 44 years. The dark wood walls, brass fixtures, and historic building bring visitors back to a heartier time when maritime law was the rule of the land. In addition to their famous natural beef, Dirty Dan’s does seafood right and the seafood pasta alfredo is no exception. Dungeness crab meat, scallops, seasonal fish, mushrooms, tomatoes, shallots, and plenty of parmesan top this penne dish.

Blue Fin Sushi
Nicki’s Bella Marina
102 S. Samish Way, Bellingham 360.752.2583
2615 S. Harbor Loop Dr., Bellingham 360.332.2505
Blue Fin’s array of sushi and sashimi options will make dinner or lunch a tough choice. Although, remember — there are no bad choices. The golden bridge roll makes for a filling and delicious “beginner” roll that even sushi veterans will enjoy. The roll features crab, cucumber, avocado, and scallops, all topped with a unique special sauce. The lightness of the crab and cucumber pairs well with the fatty avocado and scallop, making them the perfect duo.
There is good reason why Nicki’s keeps getting attention for its fish and chips — the dish is delicious and there is plenty of it. Following the tradition of batter-drenched seafood, Nicki’s fish and chips are dipped in their very own tempura-style batter. Visitors get two large pieces of cod, fresh steak fries, and house-made tartar sauce. Keep in mind, the size of this dish means you could easily share, although the flavorful crunchiness might make you want to keep it to yourself.

Lobster Roll Saltwater Fish House and Oyster Bar 113 First St., Langley 360.221.5474
Saltwater flies in its lobster live from Maine for this sublime dish (unlike salmon, when it comes to lobster, it’s OK to imbibe from the other coast). The restaurant’s best-selling dish, the lobster roll is tossed with celery, chives, and house-made mayo, then stuffed into a warm, lightly buttered brioche roll, also made on the premises. With flavors of roasted carrots, brown butter, and sage, you’ll find yourself savoring every last bite in a cozy dining room with a roaring fire.
People visit Vinny’s exclusively for their calamari appetizer. Naturally, you should too. It’s not just your standard calamari served with dipping sauce. It’s unique in that the calamari are breaded and pan seared, then tossed with welled raisins, tomatoes, pine nuts, garlic, and chili flakes. A little salty, a little spicy, and a lot tasty. The calamari can also be served atop a Caesar salad.
Brodetto is hearty bowl of clams, mussels, cod, scallops, halibut, and salmon in a spicy tomato saffron sauce. The flavors melt together, punctuating the fish and scallops. After devouring spoonfuls of the stew, use a crusty piece of bread to soak up the sauce. Cask & Schooner is a laid-back, upscale pub, perfect for enjoying this hearty meal.

ere in the Pacific Northwest, we’re lucky to be surrounded by lush, green forests; deep, salty seas; rocky, snow-covered mountains, and a beautiful, clear blue sky — in the summer months anyway. We’re also lucky to share this place with an abundance of local wildlife. Some we see nearly every day while others are more elusive, making sightings a truly magical moment. Our feature explores some of the creatures with whom we share the land, sea, and sky as well as where you might find them. As you travel our corner of the Pacific Northwest, keep an eye out for some of our feathered, furry, or fishy friends, but please always remember to keep a safe, respectful distance and do not approach, touch, or feed our local wildlife.

LAND A
s you trek our trails, climb our mountains, walk our coastal cliffs, or just stroll through our streets, keep an eye out for common critters like squirrels, deer, and rabbits. Also common in our area are raccoons, skunks, and opossums. Sightings of these land-walkers are most common in the spring and summer months. Although the following animals are less common, rest assured that they are here yearround, enjoying our region right along with us. You can find the massive but charming moose in a few areas of the state, primarily in the Selkirk mountains but also in the Blue Mountains, Okanogan Forest, and the North Cascades. These goofy, lumbering creatures are a sight to behold, but take care if you encounter them on the trail; their size alone makes them dangerous. Washington is home to two types of elk: Rocky Mountain Elk, which live east of the Cascade Mountains, and Roosevelt Elk, which live on the range’s western side. These large, majestic mammals boast beautiful antlers and can weigh nearly 1,000 pounds. You may not see a coyote in Washington, but you may hear one. Listen at night for the howls and yips of these intelligent canines. They live throughout the state, so it’s possible you’ll

catch one strolling along a seashore or trotting through a field. They’ve even been spotted in cities. Cougars, also known as mountain lions or pumas, are beautiful but rarely spotted in the wild. These stealthy cats appear throughout the state, but prefer areas with dense vegetation. Estimates report that there are roughly 2,000 cougars in Washington. Are those white rocks on the side of the hill moving? Thousands of mountain goats are estimated to live in the Cascade mountain range. If you spot them while hiking in North Cascades or Olympic National Park, make sure you stand at a safe distance before snapping photos.

North American River Otters
Banana Slug Our forests are full of banana slugs. Growing up to seven inches long, these slimy and colorful mollusks are the secondlargest slug in the world! They are fellow trail-goers, so watch your step. Coastal giant salamanders, which eat banana slugs, are pretty big too — they are one of the biggest land-dwelling salamanders on Earth. Living near streams and tributaries, they’ve been documented in the Nooksack River. The pacific treefrog, or the chorus frog, is the state amphibian of Washington and one of the more common species. It has a range of colors from green to brown, but can be identified by its loud chorus of croaking during its breeding period of late winter and spring. You can spot river otters near the shores of regional waterways, including the Salish Sea. These small marine mammals tend to be in small groups, and while known for their playful personality, are carnivorous hunters. Make sure to secure your food at your campsite, as we share our Northwest forests with black bears. These bears love to eat berries, insects, and foliage, but will also get into your garbage. Don’t be fooled — black bears come in a range of colors, from light brown to cinnamon.

ith over 150 miles of shoreline, our great state has many beaches and walkable coastlines that offer prime views of Pacific Ocean sea life. From summer jellyfish blooms to breaching whales along our bays, there is plenty of life in our slice of the ocean. Daily sea life sightings along our rocky beaches include many types of crabs, sea anemones, and sand dollars. At low tide you can easily spot, or even forage, clams, muscles, and many other varieties of shellfish. Thanks to bioluminescent algae, you can swim or even paddle in glowing waters beneath the stars — experience this natural phenomenon during the warmer summer months along the San Juan Islands and Bellingham Bay. You can spot sea stars in tide pools along many Washington beaches. The Olympic Coast is sure to deliver a few sightings of these colorful sea creatures, which are not actually fish but echinoderms. Often mistaken for whales, orcas are actually the largest species of dolphin. They are skilled hunters, though typically docile toward humans. You can find pods of both resident and transient orcas in the Salish Sea region. Many local companies offer tours to see these spectacular and endangered marine creatures. There are a few different species of Pacific salmon: Chinook, Sockeye, Chum, Pink, and Coho. These fish are a cornerstone of our region’s ecosystem and are imperative to native communities. Salmon hatch up freshwater streams and make their way to the Salish Sea to mature before migrating back upriver to spawn. Massive and rowdy, the Steller sea lion basks along the rocky coast of Washington and the Puget Sound. They are the largest species of sea lion and you’ll know one if you see one — they are often in colonies, though commercial fishing and climate change have affected their numbers. The harbor porpoise can be found throughout the Salish Sea. Growing to just over six feet long, these small marine mammals are found in shallow waters. They are distinguished by their round head and shy personality. While taking a shore-side walk in the brisk Washington air, you’ll see plenty of small, shelled friends scurrying around. Purple shore crabs, identified by their small size and colorful bodies, are one such species. In winter, you might find them displaying a mating dance. Careful, they’ll pinch you if you get too close!

s you make your way around our beautiful area, look up to spot one of our local birds of prey. Late January and early February are the best times to catch a majestic bald eagle sitting in a tree. Stay long enough and you might see one swoop down to gorge on salmon. The Upper Skagit River in northern Washington has plenty of viewing sites as well as eagle tours. The Bald Eagle Interpretive Center is a great resource for learning about eagles and where to view them. Daily sightings of hawks and falcons are also common. Which is which? You can easily tell the difference as they soar our clear blue skies. A hawk has wider and more rounded wings, while falcons wings are slender and pointed at the ends. If you get a close enough look, a falcon’s beak, along with the feathers around its eyes, are yellow, while a hawk’s beak and face have more brown tones. The tall, slender, and downright regal great blue heron is found in Washington waterways through all seasons. Hike

around shorelines to see these skilled fishermen at work — you might also see them flying in their slow and spectacular style or standing patiently in culverts along freeways and roads! The quick chirps of the Anna’s hummingbird can be heard year-round in the Northwest in meadows, parks, and gardens. Males perform an elaborate, noisy dive show to attract mates during winter and spring. The hummingbird’s green body and magenta throat make for a beautiful sight on a nature walk. Did you know the Northwest has puffins? The tufted puffin is easily recognized by its orange beak and blonde crests. Although once common to the San Juan Islands, they are now more likely found in summer nesting sites on Protection Island, where the Strait of Juan de Fuca gives way to Puget Sound. The western screech-owl is a bit of a misnomer for this forest-dwelling, robin-sized raptor found throughout the West. It’s call is more of a high toot with an accelerando pattern. They can be found perching and hunting at sunset and throughout the night. With yellow eyes and small ear tufts, the owl is easy to identify. Considered extinct for a hundred years, island marble butterflies are extremely rare due to habitat loss. They can only be found on Lopez Island and San Juan Island. If you find yourself island-side in the spring, you might get a glimpse of its white and yellow wings on a Virginia pepperweed — don’t bet on it, though. If you go searching, be sure to respect their delicate environment.

SHOP LOCAL Faux Feathers & Fur Photography: Katheryn Moran Photography
Is it any wonder that, every now and then, we take our fashion cues from the creatures who live outside, in the elements, all year long? In the cold and wet of winter, we crave the warmth that fur — even artificial fur — can provide. We can also relate to the color and pageantry of birds whose feathers attract attention. For us, faux feathers and fur — when employed creatively, like in the following pages — offer a striking look to combat the dispiriting dark months in the Pacific Northwest. In this fashion feature, we urge you to take a look and maybe go a little wild, all without harming our feathered and furry friends.

The Mint Oreo ice cream made by Mallard Ice Cream is a long-time favorite. The flavor is like the perfect combination of mint chocolate chip and cookies and cream. Enjoy it near the shop’s fireplace in the winter or next to the open garagestyle doors in the warmer months.
Hank and Bubby’s — an ice cream truck known to make appearances at Bellingham Bells games — has a lemon pie flavor that’s out of this world. Waffle cones cost extra, but they’re worth every penny. If you’re venturing to the Mount Vernon area, stop by Forte Chocolate’s production kitchen. If you’re lucky enough, try a bite of the Lemon Pepper Bar. It might sound unusual, but the flavor combination is delicious.
Sirena Gelato, located in historic Fairhaven, serves up some great flavors of this delicious Italian treat. Try the mango flavor — its bright color and strong taste will whisk you away to somewhere tropical. Swing by the Lynden Dutch Bakery while exploring First Street — it’s one of the only bakeries around where you can nibble some traditional Dutch treats, like the Oliebollen. It’s also a great place to fill up on a delicious breakfast.
Pure Bliss Desserts is a consistent gold award winner in Bellingham Alive’s Best of the Northwest competition for Best Dessert. All their treats are scrumptious, but their classic Chocolate Bliss Cake is unparalleled.
When Rocket Donuts closed up shop in Fairhaven, Acme Ice Cream took over the former space. Their amaretto ice cream boasts delicious almond-flavored ice cream with slivers of almond mixed in.
