“All labor that uplifts humanity has dignity and importance and should be undertaken with painstaking excellence.“ Martin Luther King, Jr.
According to Wikipedia, excellence is a talent that is so good it surpasses normal standards. Most people aspire to have this standard of performance but the path to excellence is a long one. It takes time, discipline, effort, and dedication to achieve it. Its effect may not materialize immediately but when the years of practice and discipline come together, like in the last minute dash of the tri-athlete to the finish line, it is impossible to deny the beauty of excellence at work when he wins the first prize. Hence, it is a great tool that makes a leader become effective and stand out among others. This is how we would like to shape the next leaders of our generation. I would like to encourage everyone to dedicate themselves to the meaningful process of learning. Maximize the sources of learning in KMBI and find mentors to pull you out of the stumbling blocks. Mentorship can happen anytime, anywhere. It doesn’t have to be face to face or formal mentoring. Mentoring can also be channelled in new avenues of learning like books, the internet and videos. Although we learn a lot from those who mentor us (our Paul), we are also encouraged to look for those we can mentor (our Timothy). We can learn as much from those we mentor as we are being mentored by someone else. Mentorship is important to shape our characters, discipline, vision, mission, and mindset to achieve one goal. It is in mentoring that we can fully realize excellence. If you have performed excellently, you need to teach others to do the same so they can pass it on. Regardless of generation differences, success now and then still takes a focused, strategic, and passionate mindset. Hence, it remains a challenge for us to be excellent in our present obligations and for shaping the leaders of next generation. We must have the right attitude to be an effective agent of change that would transcend to every generation. Let us be reminded that we are called to be excellent in every aspect of our lives. We must have room for excellence and allow it to nurture, transform, reform and empower us. As we prepare KMBI for the future, we must also prepare our workforce to assume its lead.

Cebu North clean up drive against dengue Cebu North branch recently organized a clean-up drive at Tejeros, Cebu City to prevent dengue outbreaks. Aside from warding off dengue, the activity aimed to encourage residents to clean their own backyard and prompt them to actively serve the community. “We are doing this not only for social activity but to somehow lessen the threat of dengue in our community,” said Marietta Cabral, Cebu North branch program assistant, as staff and program members start to clean up the center house and nearby areas. “We really planned this activity because we know the importance of having a clean place to live at. We are glad that members helped during the preparation and contribute for the expenses of the said activity,” said Susan Timona, center vice president for special project. Due to its success, the branch plans to continue the clean-up drive next month.

MIFOS online database sample showing Metro Davao 1 clients profile.
With the pilot testing of MIFOS (Micro Finance Open System) last September, Valenzuela branch migrated their data to the online system to test and determine its capabilities and limitations. A user’s orientation and training was also conducted, prior to migration of data, for program familiarization. The orientation was attended by branch managers, accountants and accounting assistants of Valenzuela branch. They were also joined by Luzon operations managers, head office representatives from finance & accounting, management information system staff, and audit & training personnel.
To date, the team is still waiting for the organized report of the result of the test. “This is crucial because it would determine the capacity and adjustments that the employees would go through. Through this, we can also identify if we can adopt with the system or vice versa,” said Jofel Gandeza, Information
Technology manager. The results of the test would also serve as a determining factor if pilot testing can start in four other KMBI branches in San Fernando, Naga city, Bacolod city, and Davao city. One of the features of MIFOS is the easy retrieval and consolidation of reports from branches and head office. With this, reports will be automatically generated. MIFOS can help in achieving the aim of EISTOP to computerize and synchronize KMBI’s system. Per laid out plan, MIFOS is scheduled to roll out to branches by October 2010.

Guarding Your Joy at Work By Ken Layawan
A
t this point, how would you assess your joy at work? I hope you are still energized with happiness on whatever kind of work God has given you. If you read our Joy @ Work series, then you would have learned by now how to acquire joy at work and the importance of sharing it with others. However, you can still lose that joy for various reasons. It is your responsibility to guard it in your heart (Proverbs 4:23). But the question is, how do you guard that JOY? Now, let us define once again the meaning of joy. Webster’s New World Dictionary defines joy as synonymous with “happy,” “glad,” and “cheerful.” These definitions only define the expression of the wonderful emotion but it fails to consider the causes of joy. For you to easily recall its real essence, let us present JOY as an acronym: J – Jesus O - Others Y – Yourself You may notice that they are presented separately from one another, but they are actually interconnected. 1. Putting Jesus First. When you put Jesus first in your life, you will have a blessed life. Having that blessed life results a joyful life. Having this joy in your heart that can be reflected in having joy at work really does not depend on circumstances but on a living relationship with Jesus Christ. Even if you have everything in life or become the richest and wisest man on earth but if God
does not give you the ability to enjoy it, it would be meaningless (Ecclesiastes 1:2). That is why it is important that you put Jesus first in your life. It can happen when you show your love to Jesus. The word of God is so clear in Deuteronomy 6:5, which tell us to love God with all our heart, mind and soul. We are to love Him 100%. However, there are times our hearts are set to prioritize other things before God. We are consumed by other things like material things, career, and family and only a portion of our hearts is left to Jesus. This is not loving God with all our heart. If we put God in the center of our lives, if we follow the greatest commandment of loving Jesus first, we can effectively guard the joy that Jesus provided us. 2. Love for others. There would be a feeling of joy in your heart when you are able to show your love for others by helping them in their times of need. Jesus mentioned the commandment of loving one another in John 13:34. Our relationship with fellow men, women and children is inseparable from our relationship with God because His second greatest commandment is to love your neighbor as you love yourself (Mark 12:30-31). Who is our neighbor, then? Jesus taught us through a parable of the Samaritan in the Gospel of Luke that a neighbor could be anybody who
needs our help. We are taught to love the Lord with all our heart and at the same time to love our neighbor as ourselves. Every person is a neighbor to be cared for. Hence, our neighbor is not limited to our family, officemates, program members, but anybody that needs our help. 3. Pay Attention to Yourself. You should not forget to pay attention to yourself. You should be absolutely confident that God loves you. You need time for self renewal and enhancement where you still need to be dependent on God for you to be in good shape holistically. You can consult self management books or articles on the internet to help you in your self enhancement. We have to have a mindset of being transformed by the renewing of our mind. We should not conform to the pattern of this world because God’s intention for us is to have a transformed life (Romans 12:2). It can happen when we change the way our mind operates and focus on Godly attitudes, desires and ideas. The acronym J.O.Y is a special reminder to each and every one of us to guard that joy in our hearts. I encourage you to put Jesus first so you can love others and be transformed. This can definitely enable us to have the joy that is founded on Jesus. It would be a kind of joy that goes beyond your circumstances. Pray to God that you may have that joy with you all the time.

Biblical basis of counseling 1. Principles of counseling 1. Know when to speak.

3. Maintaining genuine interest and warmth.
6. Being involved and empathic.

distress.Ang isang tagapagpayo ay dapat na magtaglay ng kaugalian o traits of a good counselor upang siya ay maging epektibo sa kaniyang pagpapayo. Narito ang ilan. Traits of a Good counselor 1. Sufficient maturity to care for someone else who is in need. 2. With a humble heart. 3. Has the ability to cope with ambiguity. 4. Acceptance of the other person whether he/she will or won’t change the way expected. 5. The ability to accept his/her own struggles. Upang maging epektibong tagapagpayo dapat ay matuto tayong makinig at magdasal bago pa man ito simulan upang gabayan tayo ng Panginoon na magkaroon ng mas malawak na pang-unawa sa bawat hakbang na ating gagawin. eaders make this world either a better or worse place to live in. Obviously— and naturally—we’d like leaders to make this world a better place. There’s one problem though, despite our desire to have good leaders in our midst, we still get to see some worlds suffering from ineffective leadership. This is the silent crisis of leadership nowadays that maybe least understood. I hope I got all the solution to this crisis. But right now, I don’t. I’m not much concerned about our present leaders. What I’m more concerned about rather is the next generation. As leaders, we will shortly pass on the leadership to our successors. But, what if, only few are prepared to run the next strut of the race. How do we shape the future leaders of this land, then? If we want to end this crisis, we have to assume the responsibility to shape the future leaders. Talk to them. We can’t afford not to talk to the next generation. If we don’t, then, they might repeat the same mistakes we experienced in the past. Giving young people a substantial amount of time is very important. We need to talk to them, engage them in intelligent conversations, and encourage them to speak their minds. We should empower them to see the world as
it evolves, then give them inputs and piece of advice. Show them respect. I grew tired of hearing that leadership has something to do with age. Regardless of our age, we can persuade. An infant can persuade. A high school student can persuade. Everybody can persuade and influence one decision. The younger generation must be respected. Even if they were born in a different time, with different requirements, different problems to solve, and different opportunities, they deserve to be respected. Try to listen to them and help them find better approaches and strategies to succeed in their own time. Allow them to experience life. Some members of the older generation would always insist their authority to someone younger than them. They have the power to stop young people from experiencing the best in life. Take for example the usual family setting, the parents usually decide for their children. Will this work? Yes, but not most of the time. Because of some misfortunes or perhaps negative experiences in the past, we tend to be cautious and overprotective of our children. We stop them from exercising their judgment. We feel that we are the best person to decide. But that is not
the case. We have to let the new generation decide for themselves, however, let us not forget that it is still our obligation to guide them. Lead them with good examples and great experiences. Our leadership stories can help them decide and develop their leadership skills. Leaders create leaders not followers. They already lead. By mentoring and coaching the younger generation, there’s a greater chance for this world to be a better place for everybody. This generation is no longer about the old. It is high time that we talk to the generation that will inherit whatever the old generation is leaving behind. The earlier we prepare them, the better their chances of success. We only need to open ourselves and allow them to emerge as leaders in their own time.
Leaders create leaders not followers.

BUILDING THE FOUNDATIONS OF A WEALTHY LIFE (PART 3)

Isa dapat sa goals natin ay ang pagreretiro, whether we like it or not.
Bukod dyan
ay mayroon pang transfer at documentary stamp tax. Imagine?

14 | Communi-K • vol. 7 no.3

YULETIDE SEASON Saving Tips
C
hristmas season can be very expensive since this is the time where we buy gifts, cards, decors and food for the coming feasts. At some point, budgeting for the shopping frenzy we are used to becomes a stressful chore especially when we are struggling with our finances.
So here are some tips on how to save money this Christmas season: Early Budget Planning. Start to plan your budget and try to save money as early as possible. Arm yourself with a budget planner to monitor your savings. It would help if you itemize your purchase depending on the budget you have. Set a price limit for every gift that you would purchase. This way, you will not lose the spirit of Christmas by worrying over busted budgets. Making a List. Make a list of everything you will need to spend and stick to it! Decide and divide the total budget between the recipients so you will know how much you are going to spend for a specific person. Do not overspend and keep track of your expenses. Make Homemade Gifts. Another way to save money is by making homemade gifts. Coming up with a thoughtful homemade gift may be more valuable to the person who will receive it. It is also a good excuse to spend quality time with kids at home. Popular homemade gifts are are chocolates, biscuits and cookies, sweets, and jams.

Pick Cheap but Elegant Christmas Cards. Who said that Christmas cards are no longer “in” because of electronic Christmas cards? Some people may still find it thoughtful to receive Christmas cards. Choose cards that are chic, unique and inexpensive. Look for simple, clean designs with muted palette. You can add just a little elegant touch to it by adding a ribbon. Don’t forget to check the quality of the paper used. As an alternative, we can use postcards and letters. If you’re feeling creative, personalize it and use available materials at home. Express your Creativity with Christmas gift wrappers. A gift wrapped in a special wrapper you created yourself is very special. You can use available materials at home such as old magazine pages, old strings, buttons, glitters, tissue paper etc. and voila! You have an instant gift wrapper! How to save money on Christmas decorations. Invest on a good Christmas tree that can be used for a long time. Be on a lookout for markdowns so you can fill your house with holiday decorations for a small fraction of what they originally cost. If you have kids at home, save the holiday crafts and artworks they made at school. This way, you can fill your house with extra decors and provide joy to your kids by seeing their artwork as integral part in celebrating Christmas at home. Saving money for Christmas dinner. Christmas dinner doesn’t need not
be expensive even if guests and relatives drop by unexpectedly at our homes. We can save money by checking out grocery stores offering great deals. We can build a menu based on discounted goods in the supermarket like chicken, vegetables and other seasonal fruits. Stock up everything for Christmas while it is still on sale but don’t forget to check the expiration date. Nowadays, people are becoming more practical by setting a potluck Christmas dinner wherein guests bring in any food or specialty they prepared for the holiday. Christmas shopping can be fun! All we need is a dash of creativity plus a budget in mind to make the holiday shopping as exciting as receiving gifts from our loved ones. Now, you can start planning! Head Massage:
A quick way to relieve stress
S
tressed? Why not give yourself a massage right at the comforts of your home? Although not as popular as body massage, head massage is an effective way to relieve stress. Head massage is also used as a tool for treating different conditions such as insomnia, stress, anxiety, restlessness, and dizziness. Here are some of the benefits of having a really good head massage: • Reduces stress, calms, soothes and gives comfort to enhance well being. • To relax and improve alertness and concentration. • Revitalizes brain and body and relieves headaches, sinus problems and eye strain. • Improves blood circulation and gives a sound sleep for people especially those who are afflicted with insomnia. • Reduces and releases tension, depression, and tiredness. • Helps in strengthening and improving the hair roots, hair texture, and quality. • Stimulates blood circulation to the hair follicles that encourages hair growth, and retards hair fall, premature gray hair, and baldness. So if you’re experiencing illnesses or medical conditions mentioned above, try this quick fix at home:
because it prevents protein loss in hair shafts and keeps it healthy. • Place at least 2 tbsp. of oil on the palm of your hand and slowly apply oil on your scalp. Just make sure that you apply oil on all parts of your scalp. • Do not rub your scalp forcefully and use gentle circular motion from the top of your head up to the forehead. • Reapply oil and massage the back and sides of your head up in small circular motions. Once done, massage your scalp with your fingers for 3 to 5 minutes. • Avoid the usage of scented oil when suffering from headaches.
Thousand years ago... In India, head massage was originally developed as a grooming technique by women. They use it to strengthen and improve the fullness of their hair. It was particularly popular with women of fashion who wanted to enhance their fine appearance. The technique, in many senses, became part of everyday life and practiced by young and old alike. It became a tradition that was handed down through the next generations.
Allot at least 5 minutes of your time to massage your head before going to bed to fully enjoy its benefits. Enjoy! The
Ugly Truth of
Personal Care Products O
kay, so you can’t go out without brushing your teeth, shampooing your hair, shaving, applying lotion and many more to enhance your appearance. But do you really know the ingredients of the products you are using? Everyday, we come into contact with harmful chemicals used in personal care products like soaps, shampoos, deodorants etc. But since we are often victims of clever endorsements and well-executed packaging of each product, we don’t really give importance on its composition. All we want is to buy the brand and use it. However as consumers, we have the responsibility to check if whatever we buy is safe for consumption. Now, get your favorite product and check if this contains harmful chemicals on our list: Mineral Oil, Petroleum and Paraffin. This literally coats our skin and clogs our pores. Yes, your skin can be initially smoother but it won’t allow your skin to breathe and would become more dehydrated. It prevents the skin to do its job of ridding the body toxins and can speed up aging. This is usually found in lipsticks, lotions, makeup removers, liquid foundation, face creams, eyeliner pencil, wax hair remover, and baby oil. Further, for those who are using fragrant or aromatherapy candles at home or in your office beware of candles that contain paraffin. When burned, paraffin emits toxins that can be harmful to your health when inhaled. It is safer to use products that contain cocoa butter, virgin coconut oil, or sunflower oil. So, look for products that contain cocoamidropyl betaine (coconut cleanser), and decyl glucoside (from corn oil) rather than SLS. Formalin or Formaldehyde. The fumes of this chemical can cause irritation and allergic reaction. Headaches, asthma attacks, watery and burning eyes are among the short-term side effects of exposure to this chemical. It can also lead to skin cancer. This chemical is used in preserving dead bodies. Other products use other names for formalin like methanal, oxymethyline,
urea, 1,3-dioxetane, quaternium, methylaldehyde, methylene oxide, formic aldehyde, oxomethane formalin, phenol formaldehyde. These chemicals are commonly used in nail polish, shampoos, toothpaste, baby wipes, and skin creams. Alcohol or Isopropyl Alcohol. It can dry your skin and speed up aging. Its fumes can cause nausea, headaches, dizziness and depression. This chemical is normally used in perfumes, hair sprays, after-shave lotions, body lotions and hair color products. Talc. Parabens (Methyl, Butyl, Ethyl, Propyl): These chemicals are suspected of having adverse effect on health. It can cause allergies, premature aging, breast cancer, and may contribute to sterility, and early puberty of women. Paraben is commonly used in antiperspirant, lotion, lipstick, shampoo, toothpaste, etc. Manufacturers are using this chemical to prolong the shelf life of their products. Polyethylene glycol (PEG). This may cause hives, eczema, and cancer. It also strips the skin’s natural moisture and leaves the immune system vulnerable. It is normally used as gelling agent in cream, shampoo, and conditioner. Available products in the market may contain small amounts of these harmful chemicals. However, the danger lies in regular use of these products and its chemical reaction when mixed to other products. Before you know it, your body may get pounds of chemicals a year! Remember, we cannot control the products available in the market but we can control what to use for our body. So be a wise consumer! Every married man should know that it’s not because he already established a family, it virtually ends there. Being a good provider is of course, a given responsibility but more than providing food on the table, every Dad must be creative too in nurturing personal relationships with every member of the family. You can’t be just Dads at home! Here are some tips you might want to try:
How to become your wife’s bestfriend? • Kidnap your wife this weekend and take her to a romantic bed-and-breakfast. Make arrangements for a babysitter. • Give your wife a gift certificate for a onehour facial or massage (or both) • Tell your wife that you will take her and the family out for dinner tomorrow night. • Invite your wife to the movies - and see one of the movies she’s been talking about. • Give your wife a foot massage with some good spa oil or body cream. • Help your wife clean up the kitchen after dinner. • Ask you wife to make up a “honey do” list for you. Specify no more that five items though. • Take your wife to her favorite restaurant (no children this time). • Give your wife a coupon that’s good for ten hours of free time as you watch the kids.
curricular activities. • Make it a point to know your children’s friends. • Make your home a gathering place to hang out. Kids love to nibble so always have nibble food available. • Support your children’s interests. If they enjoy fine arts, you enjoy fine arts. If they like sport, you enjoy sports. • If you have daughters, don’t forget them. They learn a lot of valuable lessons by being with dad. • Plan family time together. Children who know they belong to a solid family are more successful in school. • Develop traditions for the family: birthdays, holidays, religious ceremonies, etc. • Touch your children - become a hugger. Appropriate touching lets your children know that they are accepted and loved.
