Below are the upcoming very newsworthy events happening throughout the Papillion La Vista Community Schools. We have listed two weeks worth of events and we will be sending them to you on a weekly basis. If you have any questions, please feel free to call or email us. Thanks in advance for your great coverage of the Papillion La Vista Community Schools! -Annette Eyman and Kala Morrissey Papillion La Vista Community Schools Story Ideas Week of November 9, 2015 Tuesday, November 10 PLHS Student Council Students Celebrate Veteran’s Day On Tuesday, November 10, PLHS student council and National Honor Society students will blanket area neighborhoods with flags. Beginning at 3:30 p.m., students will place a small flag by people’s mailboxes. They anticipate it will take about 45 minutes to place flags in the whole neighborhood. The students are doing this in recognition of Veterans’ Day. Wednesday, November 11 Papillion-La Vista South High School Honors Veterans The ninth grade students of Papillion-La Vista South High School will gather in the Titan Theater on Wednesday, November 11 at 11 a.m. to honor local veterans. The program will open with NJROTC presenting the flag. The Missing Man Table will then be set. This table is set for six empty places, representing the Americans still missing from each of the five service areas- Army, Navy, Marine Corps, Air Force, Coast Guard and one place for civilians. Then, the auditorium will go silent as a moment of silence is held for the POW/MIA military personnel around the world. The choir will then sing a patriotic song. Guest speaker, Admiral Cecil Haney, Commander of U.S. Strategic Command will then speak to the students. The ceremony will close with a final thank you. Papillion Junior High Holds Veterans Day Assembly Students at Papillion Junior High will gather together from 8-8:30 a.m. on Wednesday, November 11 for a special Veterans Day assembly. The program will begin with local veterans being escorted into the gym, introduced and recognized for their service. Then, the Pledge of Allegiance will be said followed by student Aiden Fisher playing “Star Spangled Banner” on his guitar along with the jazz band. Next, the 7th and 8th grade chorus will perform a selection of patriotic music and a poem will be read. This is a great opportunity for the students to learn about those in the military and show their appreciation for their service. Anderson Grove Honors Veterans Students of Anderson Grove Elementary will gather around the flag pole at 8:30 a.m. on Wednesday, November 11 for a Veterans Day celebration. The program will begin with the Anderson Grove Boys and Girls Scouts presenting the colors and raising the flag. While the flag is being raised, the whole school will then recite the Pledge of Allegiance and students will be singing the Star Spangled Banner. The 3rd and 4th grade students will be singing a patriot song followed a moment of silence and “taps” being played. Patriot Students Celebrate Veteran’s Members of the Patriot Pride Council and Pride Kids Care Club will honor veterans on Wednesday, November 11. The students will greet veterans and active military parents as they drop their children off at school that morning from 8-8:15 a.m. The students will have hand made posters and wave flags for all those that go through the drop-off line. Veteran and active military personnel are then invited into the school library to enjoy cookies and conversation, as well as, a tour of the building, pointing out aspects of the building that honor military personnel such as the plaque at the base of the flag pole from 8:15-9 a.m. Some of the guests will even be honored by saying the Pledge before the morning announcements. Hickory Hill Students Celebrate Veterans Day Hickory Hill Elementary students and staff are inviting active, retired and reserve military personnel to join them for a special Veterans Day Celebration and all school assembly, starting at 8:10


a.m. on Wednesday, November 11. The student council will kick-off the celebration by leading the whole school in the Pledge of Allegiance. The Hickory Hill singers and third grade students will sing a collection of patriotic songs. A slideshow of relatives of Hickory Hill students and staff that have served or are serving in the armed forces will be shown. The celebration will close by honoring military personnel in attendance. This celebration is a great opportunity for Hickory Hill students to learn respect and appreciation for the men and women that have served and are currently serving our nation. Walnut Creek Hosts Veterans Day Event Students and staff of Walnut Creek and local veterans will gather in the school gymnasium for a Veterans Day Assembly on Wednesday, November 11 at 9:00 a.m. The Papillion-La Vista South High School NJROTC will kick-off the event with the presentation of the colors and students will recite the pledge. The students will then hear from Jeremy Kinsey, former Air-Force member and currently a La Vista Police Captain, as well as, PLC Schools Board of Education member. Kinsey will talk about what Veteran’s Day means to him and how being in the military helped him in his current job. Veterans in attendance will then be recognized by having their names read and they will be presented with a certificate of appreciation. 6th grade students will stand in the back of the gym with Thank you Signs and the entire student body will stand to say thank you and salute. The assembly will close with a patriotic song. Prior to the assembly, students will be able to decorate a star with the name of someone they know in the armed forces. The stars will then be displayed in the school. This is a great opportunity for students to honor those that have served our country. La Vista Junior High Honors Veterans On Wednesday, November 11 all students at La Vista Junior High will come together for an assembly at 10 a.m. to honor veterans. The ceremony will begin with the PLSHS NJROTC presenting the colors and the LVJH combined choir singing the national anthem. They will then honor four staff members who have served in the military. The ceremony will close with a final thank you. Thursday, November 12- Tuesday, November 17 Health Professional to Speak with PLHS Students Throughout this semester, health professionals will visits students in Katie Krieger’s Intro to Health Careers class at PLHS. The guest speakers will talk to students about their job and their education. The speakers will each speak from 8:55-9:45 a.m. and 9:50-10:40 a.m. The schedule of speakers is. • Thursday, November 12 Kathy DeFord, DeFord Family Dental • Tuesday, November 17 Jeffrey Schwindt, CHI Lab Friday, November 13 Bell Elementary Honors Veterans Bell Elementary students will gather in the gym on Friday, November 13 th at 8:10 a.m. for a special celebration. The school will show a slideshow of friends and family of Bell students and staff that are serving or who have served in the military. The whole school will then sing a patriotic song together. This is a great opportunity for the school to recognize military personnel. Zoo Academy Students Teach Sixth Grade Students About Adaptations and Habitats Around the World Sixth grade students across the Papillion La Vista Community Schools will have the unique opportunity to learn about adaptations and habitats from around the world from high school zoo academy students. Zoo academy students will travel to various sixth grade classrooms throughout the PLC Schools and talk about four different biomes: the Rain Forest, the Ocean, the Tundra and the Grasslands. Within each habitats, the student(s) will talk about the adaptations and skills necessary to survive in these environments. They will also talk about the problems that the habitats currently face and what can be done to prevent those problems. This lesson ties into both what the zoo academy students and the sixth grade students have been talking about in their classes. Monday, November 16 PLHS Career Office Offers Luncheon for Students to Learn About Buffett/Goodrich Scholarships On Monday, November 16, nearly 145 students that qualify to apply for the Buffett/Goodrich scholarship will be invited to attend a special luncheon on applying for these prestigious scholarships. The PLHS Guidance office will be hosting the annul Buffett/Goodrich luncheon from 11 a.m. – 12 p.m. The students will enjoy lunch and hear from 2 PLHS alumni, Anthony Figueroa and Dylan Utter. This is a great opportunity for students to learn about how to apply and receive scholarships and see what they can do at the next level. Monday, November 16-Tuesday, November 24 Rumsey Station Hosts Canned Food Drive Students at Rumsey Station Elementary will be bringing canned foods and nonperishable items with them to school from November 16-24. Students earn points for their class for each item donated. The class with the most points will win a party of their choice. All the collected items will be donated to the TriCity Food Pantry. As part of this food drive, the Fuel Up to Play 60 students will also be collecting money in milk jugs throughout the school. The money will be used to purchase milk for the food pantry, something that is often in short supply. This is a great way for the students to learn about helping others in the community. Tuesday, November 17 – Thursday, November 19 Author In Residence Works with All 4th grade Students in PLC Schools Throughout the school year, Author Jeff Kurrus will be hosting monthly author-in-residence sessions with 4th grade students across the district. Each month Jeff will be working with the students on their writing ad doing an interactive fun writing activity. Throughout the year, students will also have the ability to upload writing to share with their peers and Jeff. Jeff Kurrus will also upload his writing for students to review. Students will also skype with Jeff on a regular basis to ask questions about the writing process. In November, the students will be working on reviewing their work so far, participating in fun writing activities and working on peer reviewing their work. He will be working with students at various buildings on November 17-19. Monday, November 23 La Vista West Hosts Manners Meal Over the last couple of weeks, students at La Vista West have been brushing up on their table manners. They will put those skills to test as they gather for their lunch on Monday, November 23. From 11:35-12:45 as students arrive at the cafeteria for their normal meal time, they will notice that things will be a little different. The tables will be decorated with table cloths and flower vases. The students will then be seated like they were in a restaurant. They will then be served their lunch time meal by staff members of La Vista West. This is a great opportunity for the students to put their learning to the test. Tuesday, November 24 PLC Schools Elementary Students Learn About Soybeans Fourth grade students across the Papillion La Vista Community Schools will have the opportunity for their science curriculum to come to life. Over the last several weeks, the students have been learning about soybeans and how they affect their everyday lives. Sharon Ryan from the Nebraska Soybean Board will be traveling from school to school to present “Soybeans A to Z” to the students. During her presentation, she will talk about the process of growing soybeans. She will show several everyday examples of how soybeans are used. Some examples will include peanut butter and vegetable oil. Sharon will also talk with the students about how soybeans affect the economy in Nebraska. This presentation helps tie into the student’s current science curriculum. The schedule of presentations is:
