All-Star Leader A Message From The Superintendent I cannot explain how incredibly proud I am to be the Superintendent of the PapillionLa Vista School District. This is an amazing place to work and I am continually impressed by the level of support and dedication of our staff, parents, business partners and community. I believe our District is second to none and I credit our continued success to the PLSD AllStar Team. The level of commitment and the work ethic of the PLSD staff is incredible. In all of the places I have worked, I have never experienced a team that is more dedicated to the success of each and every child. As I visit schools throughout the District, there are endless stories of teachers, custodians, secretaries, paras, maintenance staff and principals going above and beyond to meet the individual needs of our students. It’s the employees in this District that are making a difference.

I believe the evidence of the accomplishments of our All-Star Team can be found throughout this report. I am very excited to share with you our current test data, the accomplishments of our students and staff and the financial report of the District. Most of all, I am excited to share the newly approved strategic plan. Over 50 community patrons, parents and staff came together to develop our strategic goals. We are currently in the process of writing action plans for each of these goals. This strategic plan will be the road map for our future. The Papillion-La Vista Schools belong to you. I would encourage you to ask questions, get involved, visit our classrooms or attend our community forum on December 10. The information in this report cannot capture the true feeling of being in a classroom. Come see first-hand what is happening in our schools and I promise you too will be as proud as I am to be a part of the PLSD.

The PLSD Board of Education meets on the second and fourth Monday of each month at 7 p.m. at the District Office, located at 420 S. Washington Street, Papillion.

Strategic Plan Sets Future Direction of the District During the summer of 2014, over 50 community members, parents, business leaders, teachers, staff and school administrators attended a three day strategic planning session. Currently, an action team is developing the next steps for each of the five goals adopted. These goals will set the future road map for the PLSD. Individualized Learning Goal 1: By 2020 the PLSD will develop and implement a variety of flexible and innovative individualized learning plans for students in grades 7-12. Early Childhood Goal 2: All three-and-four year olds in the PLSD will have access to a quality early childhood program. By 2020, 25% of eligible students will be enrolled in a District program. International Baccalaureate Goal 3: By 2015-16 the PLSD will research and make recommendations on the possible implementation of the International Baccalaureate Programme or similar programmatic options as part of the Papillion-La Vista School District curriculum.

Information processors access and analyze information from a variety of sources for different purposes. Effective communicators apply their reading, speaking, writing, and listening skills to communicate effectively. Critical thinkers and problem solvers assess the situation, gather important information and develop relevant, effective alternatives to reach a solution or decision. Self-directed learners take the initiative to actively and independently inquire and apply learning to new and different situations.

Collaborative individuals value teamwork and the results achieved from multiple viewpoints and talents working together toward a common purpose. Active, responsible citizens are well-informed and apply knowledge and skills to improve the quality of their lives and communities. Quality producers create products and performances that reflect high standards. Personally and professionally responsible individuals take responsibility for their own physical, intellectual, emotional, and social well-being. Individual leaders have a strong sense of vision, have passion, and are able to inspire commitment.

Carriage Hill Named 2014 National Blue Ribbon School! On September 30, Carriage Hill Elementary was named a 2014 National Blue Ribbon School by U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan. This is one of the highest national awards given to schools and Carriage Hill is the first school in the PLSD to ever receive this honor. They were the only school in the Omaha metropolitan area to receive this recognition. The Blue Ribbon Award recognizes overall academic excellence and the progress made in closing the achievement gap among student subgroups. To receive the award, among other things, a school must be in the top 15% of schools in the state in the area of English, and must also show significant growth in achievement. As you can see from the chart below Carriage Hill is accomplishing both of these goals. The PLSD is very honored to recognize the staff, students and parents at Carriage Hill Elementary for achieving such a great honor.
