Monoprint is painting, painting on a Plexiglas plate. The medium lends itself to painterly technique and flowing color and form. Using the same plate many times creates freedom and versatility in working with images, forms and color. Techniques demonstrated: roller techniques, silhouettes and stencils, ghost images, sequential opportunities, and wiping out to create marks and line. Monotype technique in one form or another has been associated with artistic legends since the middle of the 16th century. Practitioners include Seghers, Castiglione, Blake, Degas, and Gauguin. Join the masters in creating spectacular artworks.

Collage Workshop: Transforming Everyday Materials in Pittsfield Anne Roecklein Saturday and Sunday, 10AM to 4PM CP06F12: November 3 and 4 Location: The Lichtenstein Center Member Tuition: $132 Non Member Tuition: $144

This is an intermediate-level weekend workshop focused on using everyday materials in collage to develop imagery that turns the familiar into the newly unfamiliar, and creates meaning that is both personal and accessible. Collage has been described as the quintessential medium of our time– perhaps because of the enormous amount of mechanically reproduced images that surround us that make great materials for collage. Come spend a weekend thinking about all of the different things you can put together – materials that accumulate in your everyday life, such as sugar packet wrappers, junk mail, store receipts, etc. Some materials will be provided, but start collecting your own! Then, we’ll work to balance details with overall compositions, explore accumulation and saturation, and create constructions that transform the commonplace into the extraordinary.

CP05F12: October 20 and 21 (two Days) Member Tuition: $132 Non Member Tuition: $144 Plus $25 Materials Fee

Enter the Wabi- Sabi world of ephemera, found objects, and the patina of age. Add this Japanese aesthetic to your 3-D creations, house them in boxes and you embark on an enchanting mixed media journey. Assemblage is the technique used to create 3 dimensional encasements or sculptural works where anything goes! In this workshop learn about scale, depth and basic construction skills. Find the perfect adhesive. Come with a collage theme in mind and bring source materials and your favorite box. Inspiration is everywhere: nature, theater, circus, shrine or wonderland! Give life to your smallest collections, antiques, ephemera and everyday flotsam, when you awaken your Wabi-Sabi appreciation.

“Being an intern allowed me to build confidence, hone my teaching abilities, all while gaining a network of connection.”

I make collages, assemblages, and installations that explore ideas such as making an improbable narrative possible, giving an underutilized material the chance to be something more than ordinary, or testing the idea of infinite improvement. I blend found images and materials to create utopian places and landscapes as well as imaginary systems or tools that might help us attain or understand our desires. Color is the driving design element in my work. -Anne Roecklein, IS183 Faculty Artist 4

Saturday, 10AM to 4PM

What can go wrong with clay, glazes and kiln firing - everything. At some point every potter will encounter a clay or glaze defect. Identifying the problem and knowing how to correct the defect will enable you to spend more time making pots or sculpture. What are the problem producing glaze and clay body materials? What are the “guaranteed” reliable materials? The answers and other labor and time saving detailed information will be thoroughly explained in our workshop. Whether you’re just starting in ceramics or are an advanced professional we believe you will gain an increased understanding of ceramic materials and how to solve basic clay and glaze faults. If you have ever had a clay, slump, warp, crack, or glaze, run, craze, crawl, bubble or pinhole, you might find this “day with the broken pots” useful.

Although not everyone makes tea in a teapot, every potter should spend some time making teapots. The teapot is a wonderful compilation of ceramic forms requiring diverse skills: throwing and trimming round forms, making secure lids, throwing a narrow spout and pulling handles. All with an eye towards balance, perfect proportions and functionality of the finished product. Join the challenge – and the fun.

Ongi throwing is the exploration of the “linear” in a nonlinear form. It will open your work up to a whole new aesthetic understanding of volume and scale. Plus, it will make all your other ceramic friends jealous that you can throw a super large vessel. -Craig Langlois, IS183 Faculty Artist and Berkshire Museum Education and Public Program Manager 6

Posed versus candid portraiture will be regarded as well as the challenges of photographing people we know or strangers. Aside from demonstrations of techniques, in and out of class assignments and group critiques we will also look for inspiration to the work of photographers who have explored portraiture artistically such as Alec Soth, Jessica Backhaus, Diane Arbus, Susan Paulsen, Annie Leibovitz, Matt Mahurin and Deana Lawson among others. The goal is to learn how to photograph people in an engaging manner and achieve compelling results that capture the photographed person’s essence.

International Contemporary Artists Have Community Impact! Summer 2012 marked the inaugural year of IS183’s Berkshire Residency Exchange (BRE), an innovative program bringing international contemporary artists into the classroom! Over the course of three weeks students in Pittsfield Public School District’s summer transition program, Bridge 2o12, worked side-by-side with BRE artists, engaged in a cultural and creative exchange they would not otherwise have access to. As part of a service learning curriculum designed to transform at-risk students into artists and community advocates, BRE artists served as a catalyst for positive engagement and expanded Bridge 2o12 students’ perspective on the world.

BRE artists served as a catalyst for positive engagement... This year’s artists Noor Al Suwaidi of the United Arab Emirates and Bembol dela Cruz of the Philippines fostered increased dialogue

on culture and global awareness, reinforcing lessons on community stewardship and advocacy. Utilizing art as a communication vehicle, Bridge 2o12 students were empowered to use 2012 BRE Artist Bembol dela Cruz art to share their authentic voices with their local community and the world. At the culmination of their three-week collaboration, BRE artists presented the students and their work to the public during the Pittsfield First 2012 BRE Artist Noor Al Suwaidi Fridays Artwalk at Ferrin Gallery on August 3rd, impacting the community by cultivating positive public recognition of the Bridge 2o12 students’ creative accomplishments. Professional contemporary artists in the classroom provide a different model for success— success defined by positive creative risk taking

Professional contemporary artists in the classroom provide a different model for success... and personal expression. BRE artists transform the community by both allowing students a new way to thrive and achieve, and by functioning as a lens for the community to see the potential and positive contributions of our most at-risk youth.

Bembol dela Cruz works with a Bridge 2o12 student

We are thrilled by this successful launch and the possibilities as BRE expands to incorporate more artists working in more schools, furthering the impact of this unique program in our community!

Birdge 2o12 students work on water wheels

In Summer 2012, IS183 offered a five week arts and service learning curriculum, Fluidity to the at-risk students of Bridge 2o12 at Taconic High School. This original curriculum transformed students into artists and community advocates using the Housatonic River, a 150 mile river whose headwaters are in Pittsfield, as inspiration. Students connected to their community, learned of the history and importance of the Housatonic River watershed, other organisms that share the river habitat with man, and the challenges faced by all stakeholders in the watershed. By programs end each student had the tools to take personal action and voice their opinion on how to ensure the future viability of our most important resource. “I have been amazed at the connections IS183 Faculty Artist Angel Heffernan has been able to form with the students through their Fluidity curriculum. She has taught them that art is a meaningful way to express themselves. I have watched kids with tremendous turmoil in their lives find peace and tranquility in their art, all while reinforcing academic curriculum goals and engaging them as community stewards and water advocates. Angel has made great strides reengaging reluctant learners, and our students are excited to take part in her class.”

Citizens’ Hall Residency Welcomes Dream Home! IS183 is excited to announce our fall Citizens’ Hall Residency program featuring artists Andrew Davis and Claire Fox! Starting Tuesday September 4, North Adams artists and gallerists Claire Fox and Andrew Davis will begin installation of Dream Home, a thematic exploration on a miniature scale addressing their own personal mythologies and incorporating painting, sculpture, installation and video. The public is invited to join our fall residents in the creation of Dream Home during open studio hours Saturday September 22 from 11am to 1pm. All are welcome to the opening reception with artists talk on Wednesday October 3 from 6 to 8pm. A twice-yearly program launched this past April, the Citizens’ Hall Residency is both a showcase for local talent and provides an access point for the public to witness creative production in progress. The Citizens’ Hall Residency program invites one pair of artists each fall and spring to collaborate on an on-site installation in our Stairwell Gallery, activating the space during our shoulder seasons and transforming functional space into an interactive exhibit. Citizens’ Hall resident artists host open work hours and a gallery talk, inviting the public to step into their process.

Making Functional Ceramics at Reid Middle School This summer students from Reid Middle School, Pittsfield made functional ceramic vessels with IS183 Faculty Artist, Laura Gratz, during two one week long summer sessions. After learning how to create a ceramic vessel, taking a tour of Sheffield Pottery, and glazing and firing their work, students used their pieces out in nature to drink pine needle tea and eat food cooked over their campfire.
