With an emphasis on approaching animation as a fine arts form, experimental animation allows us to play with different techniques and different ways of storytelling. Along the way we will look at the work of experimental animators to gain a better understanding of the history and practice of the field. This class will explore basic animation principles and methods such as: straight-ahead drawn animation, basic stop-motion using clay and objects, flat-puppet, paint on acetate, and pixilation. Students will complete exercises in these techniques and then collaborate to produce and experimental animation piece as a group. All levels welcome.

We will take a look at the good the great and the ugly and analyze what makes design successful, learning about the elements of typography, illustration, photography and layout in the process. Students will then learn to create their own projects using the design trifecta: Adobe InDesign, Illustrator and Photoshop. The class will focus on how to design for impact, legibility and aesthetics. For beginners, this will be a basic introduction to the tools and functions of InDesign primarily and how it is supported by Photoshop and Illustrator. Learn how to create a formatted piece (a brochure, poster, invitation or your choice) and by the end of the class we’ll create digital files that are ready for production. Students will need a laptop and should download a trial or student version of InDesign from the Adobe Creative Cloud.

We will cover the study of shapes, values and colors of the model and there will be still life and flowers from which to choose. In the study of the figure, the student will become aware of the anatomy of the human form by learning the placement of the bones and muscles along with planes and proportions. Much of the attention will be on the use of color, as color speaks so directly to the emotions and conveys at a glance the artists intentions. We will develop awareness of the importance of creating graded washes, which is the basis for achieving the beautiful translucency that is unique to this medium. Drawings can be delicate renderings, bold impulses, evocative suggestions and solid realism. They can be preparations for paintings, sculptures, buildings, and wonderful works of art on their own. The Drawing Studio is designed to introduce beginners to the many possibilities of drawing and to guide those with more experience toward a richer practice. Class projects will be tailored to the group and the individual student and will explore a variety of techniques and subject matter, using a range of media. Come ready to make a mark, try a new material, and expand your drawing practice!

Join us as we explore color in depth through outdoor and still life subject matter. Depending on the weather, we will either head outside to explore the shifting scenes of late summer or work on rendering a still life indoors. Throughout, we will explore both abstract and realist approaches and will focus on careful observation of light, paint selection, color theory, and composition. Guided individual attention as well as demonstrations make this an ideal class for any level. Students can choose to work in any paint medium such as oil, acrylic, watercolor or gouache. This course presents the basics of representational drawing. The goal of the class is to learn to think in two dimensions. Using concepts developed during the eighteenth and nineteenth century in France, Italy, Germany and the Netherlands, students are introduced to simple shapes and how they are used to create form in two dimensions. Modeling is introduced through light and shadow. Charcoal and pencil are used to create line, value and tone. Objects are put into perspective, and perspective is also used as a technique to divide space. Once these elements have been studied, students are introduced to composition. We will also discuss “content” because, while all of these aspects of drawing are important, the most important concept in the creation of art is its subject matter. If time allows, we will also study anatomy. Monster concept illustration by Patrick O’Donnell

Of the four seasons, summer often resonates with us most deeply. Since childhood, it holds a special meaning and generates unforgettable experiences. The promise and memories of summer linger in our hearts the longest. In this hands-on workshop we will explore how to photographically capture the essence of summer. What represents summer to you? What memories of its wonders do you want to keep with you forever? Over one weekend we will work on sharpening our technical skills to best utilize our cameras. Emphasis will be on the elements of composition and understanding the effects of light and shadow, as well as the play of colors. We will photograph garden bounty and natural scenes, silhouetted landscapes and other subjects selected by the instructor and students to highlight summer’s treasures. Students will be encouraged to develop a mini portfolio of images that celebrate their take on the season.

Photography means writing with light. Whether you make portraits or landscapes, whether you use a film or a digital camera, light is your descriptive medium. Light itself might even be your subject. In this workshop, you will learn to observe and to work with light, paying particular attention to light quality and direction, and to the color of light. We will consider both natural and artificial light sources. Observing how light describes a subject, we will discover its expressive and emotional impact. We will analyze light—in photographs and in the world—and we will make photographs in a variety of different light conditions.

Projects will be inspired by a deep inquiry into methods and materials of the art making process and will be a reflection of the lenses through which each artist experiences the world.

Castaldo, Ben Evans

From Leonardo da Vinci to Georgia O’Keeffe to Damien Hirst, bones have been the subject of many works of art. Using what’s inside us as our inspiration, we’ll create 2D and 3D works of art! Projects will include: bone landscapes (O’Keeffe Style), Alternative Matroshkyas (nesting dolls), pop culture skeletons, Dali insides, and Dia De Los Muertos skulls. We’ll work in paint, pastel, ceramics, recycled materials and more. Come prepared to explore the inner you!

Erica Manville, Ben Evans

In the Bauhaus movement the ultimate aim of all creative activity is building. Form follows function! In boot camp we’ll study the essentials, with an emphasis on how materials work. Then we’ll tear down, deconstruct, rise up and rehab using a wide range of materials, all in the context of this early 20th century movement. From ceramics to 2D design to abstract painting we’ll construct works that have weight! “Drawing the Portriat” Teen class at Little Red

The International Case for IS183’s Learning Through Arts Program

Andy Foster—IS183 Board Chair

Supporting arts in education is key to IS183’s mission, with 1,500 kids in over 20 Berkshire schools presently b e n ef it i ng f ro m I S 1 8 3’s L e a r ni ng Through Arts (LTA) curriculum. But why does a program like IS183’s LTA exist? And what makes it important? In the US, we’ve seen the arts suffer through an ongoing series of education cuts. Accountability testing has further deepened these cuts in arts spending — if students are falling behind in math or science, the idea goes, cut everything else, arts included.

“...for the economic side to flourish you need more entrepreneurs, you need more creativity.”

At the same time the US pursues this lose/lose approach, other countries have come to embrace arts education not as a disposable extra, but as a muscular key to future financial and societal health and competitiveness. I consult in the Middle East for a country, Qatar, now developing an in-depth approach to the arts and culture sector, including a national arts curriculum for their schools; much of the ideas come from past American practices, ones we have abandoned in difficult economic times. Qatar sees this program and its attendant costs as a necessary part of the country’s move to an internationally competitive ‘knowledge economy’.

Singapore, a global technology leader, took a sharp turn in 1990 and began to heavily invest in cultural institutions and arts education. They instituted a national arts curriculum and followed up with sophisticated tracking of student engagement. Within a few years they added visual arts and design high schools and universities. The government’s view was succinct. Prime Minister Goh Chok Tong said, “ ... for the economic side to flourish you need more entrepreneurs, you need more creativity. So you must look at the arts... the two must go together.” So in our country, school-based arts programs have been enhanced or replaced by external programs provided by concerned citizens—IS183’s a strong example. Until we come to our senses as a society and support arts and culture with substantial increases in governmental funding to our schools, IS183 needs your help to help our kids. It is critical. As seen by striving countries all over the world, the arts are an essential key to a future that looks increasingly competitive and — to our wonder — increasingly creative.

The activities he leads are creative, engaging, and thought-provoking.” –Co-Teacher Name:

Michael Vincent Bushy

He moved from the east coast of Massachusetts to Pittsfield in 2009, where he has continued to produce and exhibit art throughout the Berkshires.

“He is an awesome, funny, brilliant, sharp influence on his students and his colleagues.” –Former Colleague Artist Statement:

We tend to hold the creative process… self actualization… at the top of Maslow’s Heirarchy of Need. And it is. Many of my students are not at the top of that ladder, nor will they be in the time 36

that I have to work with them. These children are grappling with the lower rungs… Self actualization is a distant concept that’s often totally unattainable in the short years I have with a student. So do I simply not teach these students art? Of course not… I ask pointed questions about how their experiences have led them to their creative decisions. In short, I teach them to use art to communicate… ideas, experiences, and emotions- I teach them that they can convey their needs, and even make the viewer feel what they are feeling.

What I Learned At IS183

Reflections from an ex-Learning Through Arts Program Coordinator Coming out of MCLA with a degree in art and arts administration, IS183 was my first choice of where I wanted to work. I wanted to be at the art school, to make art happen as an administrator and in the classroom. Where I ended up was a perfect balance. I learned so much in my three years at the art school. From basic administrative stuff to marketing and social media to classroom management skills and curriculum development to event planning and program delivery and on and on.

It has truly been a pleasure to contribute to the growth of IS183’s Learning Through Arts program, the planning of THE most creative and extraordinary parties, to develop inspiring (and downright FUN) art lessons for children, and so much more— all while splitting my time between the office and the classroom.

With Love from Santa Cruz, CA Brielle Rizzotti

As an arts administrator the biggest take away for me is the wealth of knowledge I’ve acquired! Before IS183 I’d only read about arts management in class, so the real world, real experience I gained is invaluable. As a faculty member teaching in the Learning Through Arts program what most inspired me was the enthusiasm of my students. I’ve loved being able to be part of inspiring kids. And even when working with populations that are truly challenged—how engaged and creative they are, from the youngest ages! 38

Williamstown, MA — After an inaugural ye a r o f c la s s e s a t th e L i tt l e Re d Schoolhouse, North County Program Coordinator Cecilia Hirsch says that “Our studio classes are taking off! They have helped develop and enrich our community life and connected talented artists with interested students.” Hirsch notes that classes are held in the historic Little Red Schoolhouse, a wonderful property managed by the South Williamstown Community Association (SWCA) - a group dedicated to preserving and supporting historical and community ties. “It has been gratifying to work with the SWCA to ensure that Little Just like exercise, it is Red continues as a so important to work our vital centre to the community,” says creative muscle—and doing Hirsch, “It’s been it in the company of others a great fit since our classes offer a is even better! chance for people to build community while developing new skills, and working different parts of the brain. Just like exercise, it is so important

to work our creative muscle—and doing it in the company of others is even better!” Students at Little Red also help increase the local traffic in Williamstown, heading off to get some cheese at Cricket Creek Farm or fit in some nature discovery at Field Farm or The Clark Art Institute. For Pittsfield families, notes Hirsch, travel time to IS183’s Williamstown and Stockbridge locations are the same—so all are encouraged to make the trek North and enjoy all that Williamstown and IS183 studios have to offer! 39
