Creating Sculpted Watercolor Paintings of Nature Robin Brickman Saturday and Sunday, 10AM to 4PM

When I got to art school I was utterly miserable at painting, I really struggled with it, so I set my mind to becoming the best painter I could be, I guess I sort of took it as a challenge.” Samuel Rowlett, Faculty Artist I Wish I Could Draw

Class sessions will include discussions of structure and dialogue; writing for genres; readings, screenings and scene study of great screenplays (including class favorites); table readings and critiques of works in progress; learning to write for the cut (when to start a scene and get the hell out of it); and most importantly, what I’ve learned from some of the best directors in the world.

How can we find and tap the muse within each of us? In this class we will focus on a group of 20th century artists, from Gauguin to Hockney, and their art as a means to stimulate our own creative impulse. We will study concept, color, composition and more as we dig to find the motivation each artist used to create. We will then channel what we learn into jumpstarting more conceptually interesting photographs. Bring an open curious mind, any sort of digital camera, and be ready to make some new and exciting images.
Often, some of the most powerful and touching imagery can be found right where we live. By turning the lens inward into our private lives we can discover a wonderland of treasures! Through a series of exercises students will learn to look at their lives from different angles to find intriguing visual moments. Our goal is to find ways to photographically express feelings, to capture the ephemeral and to transform the banal into something lyrical. To demonstrate how the personal becomes universal we will look at the work of both contemporary and historical photographers such as: Elinor Carucci, Tracey Baran, Larry Sultan, Roy DeCarava, Uta Barth, Sally Mann, Alessandra Sanguinetti, Nan Goldin and Mitch Epstein among others. At the end of the workshop students should have at least ten images to add to their portfolios and a new awareness of their work’s possibilities.
Experimental Animation Studio Dina Noto Tuesdays, 6 to 9PM PH02SU12: July 10 to August 28 (eight Sessions) Member Tuition: $264 Non Member Tuition: $288 plus $25 materials fee
With an emphasis on approaching animation as a fine arts form, experimental animation allows us to play with different techniques and different ways of telling a story. Along the way, we will also look at the work of experimental animators to gain a better understanding of the history and practice of this field. Designed as an introduction to the medium of animation, this class will explore time-based visual storytelling and basic animation principles using such methods as: straight-ahead drawn animation, basic stopmotion using clay and objects, flat-puppet, paint on acetate, and pixellation. Students will complete exercises in these techniques, and then collaborate to produce an experimental animation piece as a group. All levels welcome.

Learning Through Arts Success, Growth for Learning Through Arts
Thank you!
IS183’s Learning Through Arts after-school program has a simple premise: if you provide kids with the opportunity to explore their creativity with the guidance of real artists, they will thrive. They will thrive creatively, exploring a wide range of visual art mediums. They will thrive academically, as the assignments are coordinated with and tied to the academic curriculum they are studying during regular classes. And they will thrive socially, with noticeable improvements in behavior and attitude in school.
2011/2012 Program Sites Capeless Elementary School Herberg Middle School Montessori School Monument Valley Middle School Morningside Community School Muddy Brook Elementary School Pittsfield High School Reid Middle School Richmond School St. Agnes Academy St. Marks School St. Mary School Stearns Elementary School Taconic High School Undermountain Elementary School Williams Elementary School
This premise has been borne out time and again since LTA was launched five years ago at Morningside Elementary School in Pittsfield, where 95% of the kids come from families living below the poverty line. The stunning success of the program has fostered tremendous growth. Today, LTA is: • offered at 16 schools throughout Berkshire County, at all grade levels. • reaching over 300 students per week • employing 20 artist teachers to deliver the program • aided by an additional 14 volunteers There’s much to celebrate in this, and much more still to be done. Want to help? Become an IS183 Member and you will! (See page 19.)
Good People = Great Programs Since IS183 began their partnership with the Pittsfield Public Schools their Learning Through Arts program has quickly become the most popular academic enrichment class.

They began with the 21st Century Program in January 2011 at Taconic High school with the “Speak Your Mind” creative art series. The students immediately took to the program where they explored visual arts through several mediums. The success is attributed to a well-rounded, quality curriculum that ties into the Massachusetts core curriculum frameworks. Additionally, the staff from IS183 relates exceptionally well to our targeted students. Good people = great programs. The success of our first year partnership led us to expand IS183’s offerings to more schools and into summer programs, including a summer collaboration with Conte Elementary School. This would not occur if IS183 were not a true collaborator. A symbiotic relationship of funding, in-kind contributions and brainpower have made the program a win for all involved—but especially and most importantly, for the kids! The Berkshire Residency Exchange (BRE) This summer, IS183 is excited to unveil the latest addition to our extensive programming, The Berkshire Residency Exchange. A collaborative venture bringing emerging contemporary visual artists from around the world to the Berkshires each summer, this program was initiated by Storefront Artist’s Project and is now being relaunched at IS183 as the Berkshire Residency Exchange. In partnership with Omi International Arts Center, Project Art, and ArtBerkshires, the BRE will bring innovative artists to Bembol dela Cruz, House Blends the Berkshires for four-week residencies designed for public interaction and cultural engagement. Representing such diverse nations as the United Arab Emirates and the Philippines, and noted arts institutions such as California Institute of the Arts (CalArts), visiting artists will work with local children and youth through IS183’s summer camp programs, present an artists’ talk, and host open studio hours for the public to visit and watch them work. Scheduled at the peak of summer season when the Berkshire region flourishes as a vibrant world-class center of creative endeavor, the Berkshire Residency Exchange will allow artists from around the globe to connect with and explore the rich array of cultural institutions, artists, art collectors and enthusiasts that converge here. While Tanglewood and Jacob’s Pillow have made the Berkshires an epicenter for world-class performing arts talent, BRE is currently the only program providing the same attraction and exposure for the visual arts. The BRE is integral to IS183’s arts education programming, amplifying its yearround schedule by providing the community with exposure to and interaction with artistic ideas and practices from around the world. This rich cultural exchange is essential to an informed creative process in the 21st century, and encourages global connections and dialogue that often lead to profound crosspollination and enduring relationships.
IS183’s key existing collaborators in the BRE project include: Omi International Arts Center (Art Omi), Ghent, NY: Each summer the BRE extends the residencies of two Art Omi international artists by bringing them to the Berkshires to hook into the nexus of artists, arts professionals, museums and galleries centered here. The Art Omi International Artists Residency selects distinguished and accomplished artists from around the globe, fostering creative production and public involvement. Project Art, Cummington, MA: BRE will partner with ProjectArt to provide further opportunities for their resident artists to network in the Berkshires and share their work with a curious and engaged public. Project Art is a restored 19th century former mill building located on the bank of the Westfield River, providing residencies to support emerging and professional contemporary artists in the completion of projects on-site. ArtBerkshires, Berkshire County, MA: BRE Visiting Artists will feature in the events of ArtBerkshires, a series of curated contemporary Dina Noto, School Lunch art programs, projects and coverage spotlighting the museums, studios and galleries of the Berkshires. Organized by gallerists Leslie Ferrin and Sienna Patti, ArtBerkshires brings together collectors, curators, critics and artists through two weeks of venue tours, talks, and special events. This summer’s BRE artists will participate in COVET, a programming theme inspired by the contemporary artist’s relationship and re-evaluation of historical artworks and museum collections. For the schedule of open studios and other BRE 2012 events please check is183.org or call 413.298.5252 x100.
The 2012 program runs from Monday, July 16 through Monday August 13, during which the BRE will welcome the following three artists: Noor Al Suwaidi, painter and ArtOmi International artist from United Arab Emirates. Bembol dela Cruz, ArtOmi International artist from the Philippines working in figurative realism and tattoo art. Dina Noto, IS183 animation faculty artist and alumnus of CalArts, whose animation programs are renowned for their long-standing international reputation for excellence in innovative animation production. As the first resident artist in our new Experimental Animation residency program, Dina will work on-site at IS183 in a pop up animation studio and create finished segments of animation for her current film in production. Summer Arts Camp for At-Risk Children in Pittsfield
who
IS183, Art School of the Berkshires and the WordxWord Festival, in collaboration with the Pittsfield Public School District.
what A fun, educational and creative summer camp for Pittsfield kids, grades K-5, living below the poverty when where
level. Youth who would otherwise have no opportunity for engagement in creative, hands-on artmaking experiences, in spoken word and visual arts. artsCool is taught by skilled artist-teachers, in innovative curriculum developed specifically for this program by IS183 Art School.
Pilot program launches this summer (2012) with programs at two Pittsfield schools, serving up to 90 at-risk children. Conte Community School (4-week program, 45 children) Morningside Community School (5-week program, 45 children)
artsCool transforms each elementary school setting into a whirlwind of creative endeavor.
why
An Arts USA study of after school programs featuring rigorous art making over an extended period of time found that young people who participate in the arts are: • 4 times more likely to be recognized for academic achievement • 4 times more likely to participate in a math and science fair • 3 times more likely to win an award for school attendance
IS183 Art School has put this theory into practice with outstanding results in the Learning Through Arts after-school program, now serving over 300 kids in 16 schools throughout the county. artsCool is a logical extension of that successful program, adapted to a summer camp format and including partners representing other artistic disciplines.
Founding Partner, Word x Word, is a Pittsfield-based nonprofit that celebrates the transformative power of words, and produces the acclaimed annual Word x Word Festival.
how to help
Your tax-deductible donation will allow us to bring this program to the neediest children in Pittsfield FREE OF CHARGE to their families. Rather than being left to their own devices all summer, these at-risk youth will have the opportunity to express their natural creativity through guided artmaking in a variety of media. Please support artsCool today.
