Students will draw, trace and paint from the images from Blossfeldt and Haeckel’s books, and as the class progresses, create their own interpretation of the ideas they have studied. Expressive techniques using charcoal, inks, washes, mix media and water-based paints will be investigated over the six weeks. Open to all skill levels.

Investigate abstraction and simplify reality, eliminating all detail from recognizable landmarks and leaving only the essence of Winter. Expect to be inspired through this descriptive and emotional approach to art and subject! All painting/drawing media and experience levels welcome.
From cave paintings to contemporary media there is no image so universal as the human form. There is also probably nothing more intimidating for the beginner or anything quite as effective for artists in portraying the human condition! Whether you think you “can’t even draw a stick figure” or you just want to sharpen your skills, this class is geared for all levels of experience. Each class will work from a live model, exploring different ways to interpret the figure and the many techniques used in life drawing. From quick gesture drawings that capture movement and energy to longer poses that focus on subtle shifts of light and detail. Students will gain a working knowledge of anatomy and proportions and practice the skills and methods involved in drawing the human form.

Her paintings are timeless and classic yet have a fresh contemporary feeling. Painting from observation using a limited palette of Italian earth oil colors learn to approach the still life with Macgillis’ technique. Simplifying the palette helps students learn to see the colors before them and mix their paint accordingly. Art historical references will be included in this intense introduction to painting from still life.

Independent animators, secret filmmakers, exceptionally private people who’ve sublimated their creative impulses for far too long... you are all invited to come crawling out of the woodwork during these dark winter months and join us for an experimental animation studio at local bar and eaterie, Phineas Gage’s Moral High Ground in Pittsfield. A place to experiment with new approaches to animation, work on a personal project that’s been sitting on the backburner, or jump in fresh to a brand new medium, this ministudio will meet in three week sessions. Each session will conclude with a public screening at 8:30p on the last class day of both student work and other exciting short films from the experimental animation world at large. Come on out, try something different, and share whatever weird ideas have been lurking in your head with similarly weird-minded individuals! Sessions may continue past March, depending on how this experiment vibes out...

Often, some of the most powerful and touching imagery can be found right where we live. By turning the lens inward into our private lives we can discover a wonderland of treasures! Through a series of exercises students will learn to look at their lives from different angles to find intriguing visual moments. Our goal is to find ways to photographically express feelings, to capture the ephemeral and to transform the banal into something lyrical. To demonstrate how the personal becomes universal we will look at the work of both contemporary and historical photographers such as: Elinor Carucci, Tracey Baran, Larry Sultan, Roy DeCarava, Uta Barth, Sally Mann, Alessandra Sanguinetti, Nan Goldin and Mitch Epstein among others. At the end of the workshop students should have at least ten images to add to their portfolios and a new awareness of their work’s possibilities.
Starting with collage and found imagery, we will flow between still and moving art as we sidestep our inhibitions about art making and self expression. Using direct and immediate techniques designed to subvert our resistance and creative blocks, we will incorporate found imagery and materials into painting, and put compositions into motion with a simple and surprising animation technique using magazine cut outs and cut paper puppets. We will examine the dialogue between the static and the moving image, and allow these two practices to inform each other as we take risks and experiment in this two-day creative laboratory. All levels welcome.

The intent is to give children an experience of color, not form. Because the wet paint is laid on wet paper, the colors flow, blending into one another in beautiful, unexpected ways. To begin, we will work with one color at a time to get comfortable with the technique. Single colors can be painted as “clouds” of color with varying intensity on the page, allowing some white to shine through here and there. After painting with each of the primary colors singly, we will try the various two color combinations: red/yellow, red/blue, and yellow/ blue. When applied in the classroom, children will be excited as they experience the magic for themselves of how secondary colors are formed when combining two colors. The second day will focus on teaching the watercolor technique to the higher grades (3-8+). This workshop, lead by an experienced artist and Waldorf teacher, will lead the workshop participant through integrating the techniques learned on the first day and applying them to formative paintings which depict scenes relevant to the academic curriculum being taught.

The picture book, as it is today, is a relatively new art form. It elevates the image in a narrative with a small number of words to convey meaning. Generally for children ages 3-8, the audience and reach of picture books is also widening. This workshop will offer an overview of the art of the picture book and how a picture book goes from idea to marketing and publication. Using examples from the start of the modern picture book to the finest in contemporary picture books, we will look at the art of visual storytelling and the role of the picture book in the lives of children. Participants will work with the interplay of word and image and have the opportunity to work on their own “dummy book” either from their own story or an existing text. The dummy book includes the text and images in sketch form and 1-2 pieces of finished art. It is the standard form for creating picture books and presenting them to potential publishers. This workshop is open to experienced artists interested in picture books as well as beginners, for those serious about publication or anyone who wants to learn more about visual storytelling. Resources for continued study and for marketing and publication will be offered.

We’re teaching creativity...
In the Schools
We’re improving academic engagement and arts literacy through integrative arts programming in our schools
Learning Through Arts In just five years, IS183‘s Learning Through Arts program has become the Berkshires’ leading service provider for integrative arts programming in the schools, using dedicated art-making in a variety of modalities to reinforce academic curriculum goals for students grades pre-K–12. While LTA’s design and implementation are complex, its premise is simple: provide kids with the opportunity to explore their creativity with the guidance of skilled artist educators and they will thrive—intellectually, academically and socially.

Now in its second year, IS183‘s ArtsCool is a curriculum-based, integrative summer learning program for pre-K–5 students living in poverty in the Berkshires. In collaboration with WordxWord’s Spoken Word Festival, ArtsCool reinforces academic curriculum standards through an innovative visual arts, spoken word and movement program.
An intensive, five-week summer program, IS183‘s new ArtsBridge program transforms at-risk 8th graders into artists and community advocates, enhancing academic engagement, working side-by-side with IS183’s international Berkshire Residency Exchange artists.

The Studio Experience
We’re delivering hands-on, studio art-making to all ages, means and abilities in our community The Studio Experience is central to everything we do at IS183—because we believe good things happen when individuals are provided with the space, the instruction and the materials to make things—with their own hands. Begun twenty-one years ago as a summer experiment with just fifty students, The IS183 Studio Experience has grown well beyond the walls of our four founding studios in Stockbridge, to provide sustained engagement in art-making year-round in studio settings throughout the Berkshires and beyond.

Artist Residency Programs
We’re modeling a world where artists are agents of community change
Berkshire Residency Exchange IS183’s four-week Berkshire Residency Exchange brings international emerging contemporary artists, in collaboration with Omi International Arts Center, to the Berkshires to engage deeply with our community. BRE artists teach at-risk teens in our Bridge program, lead studio visits, talks and other public programs, and deepen their work and process in pop-up studios.

Professional Development Programs
We’re strengthening arts literacy by training artists to be educators and educators to use the arts
Teaching Institute In its third year, the IS183 Teaching Institute offers college-track arts educators an intensive six-week prepracticum experience each summer at IS183, in combination with a series of classes and workshops yearround designed to provide a solid foundation in creative techniques for using the arts in a variety of classroom settings.
Summer Teaching Assistant and Junior Assistant Internships
New! Annual
Each summer, IS183 employs approximately twenty young people considering careers as arts educators. Preference is given to college students pursuing art and/or education majors— while junior interns, from ages 15 and up, are offered opportunities to gain real world experience assisting in the IS183 studios.
Launching May 2013, the IS183 Berkshire Arts Educator Award will bring visibility and recognition to our community’s most inspiring K–12 educators. Annual nominations will be solicited from the communityat-large; annual honorees will be selected by jury.
Berkshire Arts Educator Award
Enriching the School Day Program IS183 faculty artists provide valuable hands-on training in new modalities to pre-K–12 grade educators, working side-by-side in the classroom to increase student engagement through art-making in new media, while reinforcing the Massachusetts Curriculum Frameworks.

Coming Up at IS183 Citizen’s Hall Residency Projects
Emerging Artist Showcase ‘13
IS183‘s Citizens’ Hall Spring Residency ‘13 will feature local artists Cynthia Atwood of New Marlborough and Beck Balken of Great Barrington in their first collaboration. Cynthia Atwood, a resident of the Berkshires for over twenty-two years exhibiting both locally and regionally, uses sewing techniques to create sensuous, provocative work that investigates how we perceive the world beyond our immediate reality. Beck Balken’s artistic output is a study of persona, self and consciousness, and how spiritual emergence of the self unfolds over time. He has an extensive exhibition record both nationally and internationally, and his work is included in the collections of the Scottish National Gallery of Contemporary Art, the J. Paul Getty Museum, and the Rubin Museum.
Now in its third year, IS183’s adult student show will showcase the work of emerging artists from current IS183 adult classes and workshops. The exhibit is co-curated by artists and students Arline Shalan and Kay Castelle, and organized and installed by an all-volunteer staff. All IS183 adult students and Open Studio participants are eligible to submit work created at IS183 during the 2012-13 school year. Application information and entry forms are available at IS183, and are being accepted on a rolling basis through May 31. The Emerging Artist Showcase will be on view in IS183’s Stairwell Gallery at Citizen’s Hall, Stockbridge, from June 17 to August 25. Opening reception is Saturday June 22, from 4– 6 pm.
“With a Grain of Salt,” the work of Cynthia Atwood and Beck Balken, will be installed throughout the month of April; the public is invited to drop by and watch the artistic process in action. Opening reception Thursday, May 9, from 6 - 8 pm at the School. Project will be on view through June 3.
Open Call for Artists for Citizens’ Hall Fall Residency ‘13 IS183’s Citizen’s Hall Residency is open to twoperson artist teams from the Berkshire County region. Artists need not have prior installation or collaborative experience, but each team must submit an application package that includes application form, resumes, work samples, and project proposal that demonstrates how team will engage the space of IS183’s stairwell and secondfloor landing in their installation. Prospective applicants are strongly encouraged to visit the space prior to submitting an application. Complete application information and forms will be available January 1 at IS183 website and office. Application deadline is February 8. The Fall 2013 residency will take place September 3 through October 1.
