Knitfest is a free community event attracting around 10,000 visitors each year. The Sunshine Coast is fortunate to have a strong local textile and agricultural industry supporting the Fibre Arts industry. Knitfest showcases the many talented Fibre Artists our country has to offer, while inspiring everyone to get off the couch and try something new in the world of Fibre Arts. We give support to the many Fibre artists, arts and crafts groups, knitting for causes groups, artisan groups and craft suppliers. We thank our community, local Council and business’s alike for sponsoring this event. Our wonderful team of enthusiastic yarnbombers and fibre artists share their amazing skills.
We had some bad news last year. We were asked to take part in the Brisbane Street Art Festival running over 2 weeks, yarnbombing the Queen Street Mall. It was an absolute honour. Sadly, during that time, we had 7 years worth of decorations stolen from our display. This has had a huge impact on the way we will be able to decorate the event this year but as always, we will do our best.
Our theme this year is “Wild Women”. Please enjoy what we have to offer and don’t forget to wear your handmade woolies, beanies and scarves.

Create a Wet Felted Wool Glasses Case
In this fun class you will learn how to make a seamless glasses pouch made from pure merino wool. Which colours, how you embellish and decorate your very own arty glasses case will be born from your imagination. You’ll learn to lay wool over a resist, and turn the wool into solid felt. The wool will become sturdy under your hands. The pouch can be used for lots of things, jewellery, treasures etc. No experience necessary.
Wet Felted Baby Slippers
Choose your coloured soft merino wool and create a cute pair of baby booties/slippers. Learn to use a resist to stop the wool felting together and hand sculpt them into shape.
Materials: Bring your own length of ribbon approx 2 metres, scissors and plastic bags for stuffing in the booties. All other materials supplied.
Make a wet felted hat in soft merino wool
In this workshop i’ll show you how to create your own pattern for your hat (yours to keep) and learn to draught the wool onto your pattern called a “resist”. We then add decorating embellishments in silk and mixed exotic fibres, then manipulate the wool so it becomes firm. We will mould the hat to the shape of your head and ensure your hat is one of a kind. You will make a stylish hat you’ll be proud to wear.

Bag of Tricks
Learn Tunisian crochet, Romanian cord, back post stitches, cabling, crab stitch and crochet joining in one class and when all the learning is done you walk out with a snazzy raffia bag. Only basic crochet stitch knowledge is needed.
Drop Spindle Spinning
Learn how to turn greasy fleece into spun yarn using a drop spindle. In this hands on workshop Maree will demonstrate how to prepare fleece using different types of tools such as a flicker brush, hackles, wool combs and hand carders in readiness to spin the fibre into yarn on a drop spindle. You will learn to spin in the grease as well as plying your yarn. How to wash the fibre and yarn is also shown. All materials included, both sheep and alpaca fleece and the hand crafted wooden drop spindle. Materials: All supplies are provided including the spindle which is yours to keep.

The Granny Square has made a huge resurgence. This workshop is for granny square lovers who enjoy utilising the traditional Granny Square into clothing like vests, jumpers and skirts, to name a few, but find the results are often boxy & unflattering. The half granny square may be just the answer – an easy way to shape armholes, neck & hem lines.

In this workshop you will be introduced to the magic and beauty of natural dyeing. I will share with you which plants and kitchen waste can be used for dyeing, how to effectively mordant fabric and the technique of bundle dyeing. KNITFEST
On Saturday, there’s lots of fun down at the MALENY SHOWGROUNDS where the Alpaca Raw Fleece Expo is held as well as the Maleny Arts and Crafts Workshop where there will be displays of Arts and Crafts for sale.

On Saturday the members will be demonstrating various crafts from spinning, weaving, knitting and machine knitting, crochet and more. There will be a range of handmade items for sale.

Raw Fleece Expo - Alpaca Show, Fleece and Halter
This year an International Alpaca judge will be giving a running commentary as they judge each fleece on Friday, July 1st. The fleeces will be display until Saturday afternoon. There will be an alpaca enthusiast with the fleeces who can answer questions on husbandry, breeding, fleece judging and fleece preparation. The halter show on Sat has over 60 alpacas of both breeds and all colours in the show ring. Exhibitors are from northern NSW to central Qld. The Exhibitors are a friendly bunch so come and meet them, chat about alpacas, fleece and have a look at the fleece for sale at the display.
