Camp Ranachqua Memorabilia - 1917-1940s Introduction: While the founders of Ranachqua Foundation attended Camp Ranachqua at the Ten Mile River Scout Camps mainly in the 1930s, the camp is far older, starting at the Kanohwahke Scout Camps in Harriman State Park in 1917. Camp Ranachqua moved to Lake Nianque at the Ten Mile River Scout Camps in 1929. Camp Ranachqua issued many patches over the years but we know very little about most them: 1. Where were they issued? The Kanohwahke Scout Camps or T.M.R.? 2. What years were they issued? 3. Why were they issued? For what purpose? Sources include camp literature and photos from the Kanohwahke Scout Camps. Here is what we know about Camp Ranachqua patches and what we don’t know. All information would be appreciated. Thanks to Gene Berman for some of the images and information. David M. 1917 - Kanohwahke Scout Camps This is from the cover of the 1917 brochure promoting Camp Ranachqua at the Kanohwahke Scout Camps. Campers were urged to purchase the camp emblem upon arrival at camp for 15 cents each.
Circa 1919 - Kanohwahke Scout Camps
Campers received a diamond-shaped patch with a stylized embroidered “R”. These were typically sewn onto uniform shirts, tee-shirts, beanies and swim suites
Circa 1919 - Kanohwahke Scout Camps We see a few adults and older Scouts wearing same “R” patch with a chevron beneath it. What does the chevron mean? When was it issued?
Kanohwahke Scout Camps? This is similar to the Camp Ranachqua arrowheads issued at Camp Ranachqua during the 1930s but the “R” and “I” are felt instead of embroidered. Where was this patch issued? When was it issued? For what purpose? Note: We generally assume that the numbers represent first-year camper, second-year camper, etc. Scouts had to satisfy certain requirements to receive the patch. We are looking for proof of this in camp literature. Because of the red arrow we assume that this patch is associated with Ranachqua Lodge but we know little about it. Where was this patch issued? When was it issued? For what purpose? <- Photo of Skipper Hoffman wearing patch.
Kanohwahke Scout Camps?
This is the only photograph that could date from the Kanohwahke Scout Camps showing the block-style Camp Ranachqua “R”.
Kanohwahke Scout Camps or TMR?
This is a 1934 photo of Jack Srulowitz who was on Camp Ranachqua staff. He is wearing a diamond-shaped patch with block-style “R” and a chevron beneath it. Where was this patch issued? When was it issued? For what purpose? What does the chevron mean?
Kanohwahke Scout Camps or TMR? Here are a variety of blockstyle “R felt-on-felt patches. These are black felt on green felt. Where were these patches issued? When were they issued? For what purpose? What do the multiple chevrons mean? They could indicate 1st-year camper, 2nd-year camper, etc. but it would be useful to confirm this in camp literature.
These patches are green felt on black felt. Where were these issued? When were they issued? For what purpose? What do the multiple chevrons mean? They could indicate 1st-year camper, 2nd-year camper, etc. but it would be useful to confirm this in camp literature. Why the change to green on black felt?
Probable TMR
These items were donated by Ranachqua Foundation member Mort Berger to the Ten Mile River Scout Museum. Where were these patches issued? When were they issued? For what purpose?
TMR
We assume that these were issued by the TMR Camp Ranachqua but know nothing else about them. When were they issued? For what purpose?
TMR
This is the series of Camp Ranachqua arrowheads issued at T.M.R. during the 1930s. We generally assume that the numbers represent first-year camper, second-year camper, etc. Scouts presumably had to satisfy certain requirements to receive the patch. We are looking for proof of this in camp literature. When were they issued? What were the requirements to earn the patch?
TMR We assume that this patch was issued by the TMR Camp Ranachqua but know nothing else about it. When was it issued? For what purpose? Why the different colors?
TMR
We assume that this patch was issued by the TMR Camp Ranachqua and has something to do with Ranachqua Lodge, Order of the Arrow. Besides that, we know nothing else about it. When was it issued? For what purpose? <- 1936 Camp Ranachqua staffer wearing patch.
TMR <- 1936 Camp Ranachqua staff wearing staff jackets with patches. Does anyone have one of these patches?
TMR
There are a variety of black and green beanies presumably issued by Camp Ranachqua. When was each issued?
