Helping to achieve a Zero Energy House in the suburbs of Auckland In Point Chevalier, Auckland, the first New Zealand Open Source Zero Energy House is being built and Viking Roofspec is a part of the team making it happen. You may be asking what a Zero Energy House is? Owners Jo and Shay refer to it in practical terms: “We will generate the same amount of energy onsite using renewable energy systems (in our case -photovoltaics) as that which we import from the grid (electricity will be the only imported energy source used in our house)” said Shay, “So if an electricity meter measuring the electricity supply to the house ran backwards when energy was being fed back to the grid, (i.e. when site generation was more Website Strategies

than used), then it would read zero at the end of the year for a nett-zero site energy building.” But for them it is not just about energy, it is also about: •

Heath, comfort and lifestyle

Resilience to increased energy costs/shortages

Wide effects on the environment including resources, climate change and pollution

Low embodied energy

That’s where Viking Roofspec steps in to be a part of this exciting new home. The Zero Energy House has a green roof between the garage and main house. As well as being nice to look at, the green roof provides a stable thermal mass that performs to a similar level as a concrete slab. It’s extremely important to have a good membrane product between the soil and timber substrate to stop moisture getting into the wood. Jo and Shay chose to use the Enviroclad product from Viking Roofspec due to its performance and environmental credentials: •

It's 100% recyclable.

Seams are heat-sealed rather than using oil-based tapes and primers

It's watertight - enough to be used as a pond liner.

It has extremely high puncture resistance, to a level that rivals bituminous membranes, but isn’t made from bitumen!

It's also well-tested, having been installed in over 800 projects throughout New Zealand.
