PUBLISHER

Launched in 2017, The KNOW Book + Tribe began as a way to bring more attention to dynamic women doing remarkable things in the Phoenix metro. We knew there were an outstanding number of women impacting the community and making big strides in their industries. Our goal was to get those women from behind their computer screens and into the public eye. Thus, we created the KNOW Book, a carefully curated publication that would feature vision-led women in a glamorous and authentic style. As the momentum grew and we recognized the need for more, we launched our Tribe around the women featured in our KNOW Book. Our mix & mingles soon ensued and we witnessed incredible things happening. We saw our women doing business with each other, creating friendships, supporting each other, collaborating on projects together and so much more. What started as a fun project to spotlight women, has turned into a full-blown movement. The KNOW Book + Tribe has expanded beyond its birthplace of Phoenix, Arizona; its aim is to launch in every major city across the United States and Canada. Today, we are excited to welcome the dynamic women of the Queen City into our KNOW Tribe. The women featured in this book have been vetted against our high standards. I am proud to say that each and every woman featured is filled with integrity, vision, and grace. Welcome to KNOW Charlotte!

AMBASSADORS Queen City, get ready to meet our inaugural class of the KNOW Tribe! Throughout most of the spring, summer and fall, we’ve worked tirelessly to find the top female influencers in our city who embody the KNOW Tribe mission to LIFT + RISE with each other, to celebrate collaboration over competition, and to do so with integrity and joy. And we did it! Throughout the pages of this book, you’ll see trailblazers and up-and-comers, company leaders and solo makers, fitness gurus and political stars. Our book is as diverse and beautiful as our city. Our hope is you’ll learn and grow from each other as much as we have in the process of getting to know each of you. You were invited to join the KNOW Tribe for a reason: you’re incredible and your energy needs to be shared with the other women in this group. We hope every time you open this book, the stories of your Tribe will inspire you as you inspire us. Thank you for being a part of our Tribe.

HEATHER GEAR PROVIDENCE PLASTIC SURGERY Think Plastic Surgeon’s wife and images of a woman with duck lips and a serious shopping habit come to mind. Not this one. Heather Gear started Providence Plastic Surgery with her husband over 5 years ago. She’s trying to change how people think about plastic surgery, aging, Botox and skincare in a space that resembles a chic LA boutique rather than a medical office. Heather captures her life in a blog, Real Plastic Wife, providing behind the scenes glances into family life and business along with personal rants and raves, including things like ‘what it’s like to know her husband looks at naked ladies all day’. She’s challenging the stereotype of what a plastic surgeon’s wife (and plastic surgery) should be.

BEAUTY JO COWAN FRANCHISE OWNER OF BLO CHARLOTTE Jo Burrows Cowan opened Blo Blow Dry Bar Charlotte in 2013 with the goal of bringing gorgeous hair to the Queen City. Five years and over fifty thousand blow outs later, she’s well on her way to achieving that goal. Jo was born and raised in England, and, yes, she still has the accent. She moved to North Carolina in 1990 to attend school, graduated from Davidson College and then obtained an MSN from Vanderbilt University in 1998. She and her husband moved to Hawaii in 1998 where Jo began her career as an nurse practitioner, caring for critically ill and recovering infants in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. Jo moved back to Charlotte in 2008. After ten years of working as a nurse practitioner, she decided to stay home to raise her children. Once her youngest daughter started Kindergarten she embarked upon her new career as an entrepreneur by opening Blo in Myers Park. Jo lives in Quail Hollow with her husband, their three daughters, one large dog, one tiny elderly rescue dog, and a very grumpy cat.

Tribe is what we are all about! We are a respite for your soul, your staycay yet vacay, a little space (well, we are pretty big, over 4000 square feet) that you can call your own -- for an hour or two during your hectic week – or longer if you like. We’re the big purple house at 429 East Boulevard. Owner Tonya Reid has built her tribe of excellence with veterans and up-andcoming talent in the industry. We know everything there is to know about hair. How to cut it, how to color it, how to straighten it, curl it, dry it, style it, lengthen it. Love the skin you’re in is our mantra. Top-tier skin care and products are our specialty. Massage? Let’s just say our clients melt into the massage bed and float away on a cloud of relaxation when their treatment is over. Nails? We take a natural, healthy approach to nail care. Our spa pedicures offer more time to lounge in luxury with a soothing massage and softening paraffin treatments. Appointments? SARAH BAUCOM AND CARRIE BARKER Carrie Barker and Sarah Baucom go way back. We’re talking middle school and high school together in Charlotte. Despite how frequently their paths crossed, the two never chatted before 2012. At that point, both had achieved professional success in their respective fields – Carrie in architecture and design; Sarah in Construction + Interior Design. As well, both were creative entrepreneurs having launched their respective companies. In 2014, they combined forces to launch Girl Tribe. Girl Tribe was born with one undeniably-strong message: support women-owned businesses for each other, with each other. Girl Tribe lassoes the power, energy, and chutzpah of the female, creative entrepreneur who make things happen - whether its funding, managing employees, or working through the daily nuances of owning their own business. The two hosted the first Girl Tribe Pop Up in 2015 across the southeast in cities, such as Charlotte, Raleigh, Greenville, Atlanta, and Nashville. Every event averages 100+ retailers, 3000 customers/traffic at each event, approximately $400K+ in revenue for the vendors and a cultural footprint with the power to shift women in business around the world.

FOOD & BEVERAGE CAROL WAGGENER BOLD MISSY BREWERY Every morning when Carol came in to work, her first boss would pop up over the cubes and shout “Look out everybody! Here comes the Bold Missy!” Her career included hard time at a mega brewer, but she developed a great love of the fun of the beer business. On a craft beer pub crawl, she realized that she wanted to start her own brewery. Several years later, after living and breathing hops, malt and yeast, the Bold Missy Brewery was born. The first 100% female owned brewery in Charlotte, the Bold Missy brewery creates well loved styles of craft beer. Each brew is named for a famous “Bold Missy”, such as, Rocket Ride for Sally Ride, Git Yer Gun Golden for Annie Oakley and Solo Flight for Amelia Earhart. The taproom also has a kitchen to prepare perfect small bites that pair well with beer.

Founder and Storyteller, Mai-Lis Bahr, launched People of CLT to provide a platform for people to share their stories. She publishes stories about everyday Charlotteans, entrepreneurs, causes, and influencers. It is her mission to educate and empower and promote inclusiveness, unity, understanding, community, diversity, and empathy through storytelling. Stories have power—they inspire, motivate, and challenge us. Stories help us to not only see others, but to see ourselves more clearly, as we connect with the stories of those in our community; a community that is strengthened by the power that is unleashed by the collective energy of individual stories. People of CLT provides a place for authentic engagement with real people. Mai-Lis loves seeing the community spirit grow by helping others make new connections through storytelling. Whether you have a personal, product or service story, know that People of CLT can connect you to tens of thousands of others. MOLLY GRANTHAM If you want real life, honesty twisted with humor, and authenticity in a corporate world… start following Molly Grantham. This two-time Emmy award winning journalist is an anchor, author and mom. She’s a leader in social media and fixture in our households, working at WBTV News since 2003. Last fall she published her first book, Small Victories: The Off-Camera Life of an On-Camera Mom. Despite the telegenic glamour she shows Charlotte on a daily basis, she lets us know it’s okay to screw stuff up and – YES! – still want to work, even after you have kids. Molly doesn’t shy away from tough stuff: She has covered gangs, terrorism, the fight to legalize cannabis oil in North Carolina, is actively involved in Charlotte’s cancer community, and started #MollysKids, stories about local kids facing uphill medical battles. But we like Molly because of her glass half-full perspective, self-deprecating truthtelling and the madness she manages to smile through when it comes to the swirling circle of life.

PAGE FEHLING If you’re an insomniac, the parent of a newborn or just a bleary-eyed lover of local morning television, Page Fehling is your new best friend.

Page grew up right outside Washington, D.C. She graduated from UNC Chapel Hill with a journalism degree and then spent two years as a Peace Corps volunteer in Honduras. Several foot-in-the-door jobs in NYC propelled Page into her first on-air gig in Raleigh, NC and then on to Charlotte where she now hosts “Good Day Charlotte” every morning on Fox 46. Page is in love with three men and one woman. But she’s married to one and gave birth to the other three, so that’ll teach you to jump to conclusions. In her “spare time” Page and her husband Jake co-host a podcast called, “Date Night with Jake and Page.” She and her (immediate and extended) family all live in Union County on one big weirdo family compound. If that doesn’t make you think she’s insane then maybe this will: Page loves waking up at 2 AM and bringing you your morning news every day. Pinky swear.

What does a Charlotte girl need to know this week? That’s the question Susu Bear asked herself in 2009, when she was looking to put her retail and consumer marketing experience to practical use as a stay-at-home mom. The answer was scoopcharlotte.com, a website and weekly newsletter created by Charlotte women just for Charlotte women. Write about what you know and love ~ which for Susu meant upscale shopping, fitness, beauty, wellness, fashion, food, family & fun. Figure out how to make money at it ~ which for Susu meant creating Charlotte’s first paid content marketing platform, and growing it to be the number one female targeted medium in the city. Over 67,000 local women visit the website each month and another 65,000 are fans and followers of scoopcharlotte’s social media. Know your brand, have a vision and just stick with it ~ which for Susu has meant almost 10 years of growth, expansion, adaptation and marketing strategy. If you’re a woman in Charlotte of any age and you like a boutique-style experience, with quality, personal service and unique flair, then scoopcharlotte is for you.

NON-PROFIT JENNIFER DIVITTORIO THE MARK AND SHARON ROBB RESEARCH FUND At the exact time that Jenn DiVittorio’s Rodan & Field business was beginning to really explode, both of her parents were simultaneously diagnosed with terminal, neurodegenerative diseases. Her Mom was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s Disease at the age of 68, while her Dad was diagnosed with an incredibly rare form of Parkinsons, Multiple System Atrophy, at 70. In an effort to honor her parents, she reached out to her alma mater, Penn State, to create an endowment. She partnered with Dr. Gong Chen, The Professor & Chair In Life Sciences, to create & fully fund the Mark & Sharon Robb Research Fund in 2016. Dr. Chen’s research focuses exclusively in Brain Repair, in Neurodegenerative Diseases. One year later, she partnered with Penn State again to create The Robb Family Fellowship to help the Graduate School continue to recruit top talent in this area of research. Jenn reached the coveted “Legacy” title within Rodan & Fields, and now uses her business as a platform to both fund research and raise awareness to her honor her parent’s true legacy.
