Johannes Pohl, President

Pohl Position This year, the US market offically became the largest export market for the Komptech Group. It’s something we never dreamed of when I started here in 2007, and my thanks go out to the great Komptech USA team who made it possible. While some markets in Europe are beginning to be saturated, we are really just starting to hit our stride in the US and Canada. 2012 was an election year; in the past that has sometimes meant less investment, but we saw no downturn. In fact, 2012 continued as strong as it started. As our installed base grows, parts and service are also growing in importance. In 2012 we doubled our warehouse space at headquarters in Colorado, and we continue to add personnel across the country to make sure our growth is backed by solid customer support and service. Our dealer network grew significantly over the last 12 months, and has become a real backbone for us. For our customers, Komptech’s R&D investment pays off each and every day. We can proudly say that we are ahead of the competition in almost all categories, especially when it comes to economy. Every cent the price of gas goes up is a challenge for all of us, but Komptech customers feel it a lot less because we engineer our equipment to be more energyefficient and still provide more output. This is a path we will continue to take.

Stonefex Stone Separator Cleans up

Entry-level “Joker” Joins the Trommel Line-up

Since the introduction of the Komptech Hurrikan plastic separator, customers had been asking for a stone separator. With the Stonefex, we’ve delivered. It effectively removes nearly 100% of rock and stone as well a large majority of lightweight inert materials. Stone as small as ½” can be separated out of woody materials. The Stonefex uses forced air to separate the lighter fraction from the heavier materials. As the rocks and stones are dropped out it simultaneously removes the plastic and paper from the lighter particles while in suspension. The heavier fraction is funneled to a side discharge conveyor while the wood slides to a secondary conveyor. By adjusting the air volume, infeed conveyor speed, and the suction fan, stones can be separated from wood at up to 100 cubic yards per hour of input feedstock. The single axle trailer is easily maneuvered, and a front jacking leg makes it easy to adjust underneath a conveyor. Whether for compost, green waste, biomass fuel or C&D waste, the Stonefex is a relatively inexpensive investment that greatly increases the return on materials and/or cuts tipping fees.

We’ve rounded out our line of trommel screens with entry level “Joker” for farms, smaller compost facilities, large landscape contractors, and material handling systems with smaller volume material flows. The hydraulically powered diesel unit has a small footprint and single axle trailer, making it easy to maneuver into tight spaces. With a heavy duty frame and 2 conveyors, its gross weight of 11,000 lbs tows with a large pickup truck. Setup and operation are simple. A front jacking leg levels the unit, and two hand cranks raise and lower the conveyors. The Joker is up and running at full speed in seconds, but is totally adjustable for various end products. Screen drum changes are easy, thanks to a large swinging access door. Optional quick-change screens make changing screen panels a snap. The ingenious single fines discharge conveyor is the width of the trommel, eliminating transfer points and spillage. The Joker’s low price makes it easy for entry level operators to get started screening compost, soil or mulch and grow their business.

When it Rains it Pours Screening Wet in Washington State

With over 40 inches of rain per year, the Pacific Northwest is a challenging place for screening compost. But Lenz Enterprises accepted the challenge and is making it work, with a little help from a Komptech Multistar L3 star screen. Lenz started out in the gravel and agricultural business, so composting seemed like a natural progression. To screen the compost, at first they did what most sand and gravel companies do – they used their flat deck screen. But those are designed for sand and rock, not compost, which is much stickier. Like most others who try it, they soon found that the wet compost would bind up the screen. That meant either constantly cleaning out the screen, or screening only when it’s dry – which is not very often in their part of the country. “In order to compensate for mother nature we decided to

purchase a star screen,” says Jason Lenz. “It allowed us to do very high production even during the heavy rainy season.” This became especially important as Lenz moved into processing food waste, which brings many more challenges in addition to the high moisture content of the waste stream. Food waste has a lot of contamination, so Lenz needed something that could also remove plastic from the material. After looking around, the company decided on an L3 star screen with the dual wind sifter option. This multifraction machine lets them remove contamination while screening wet material at a very high rate. Thanks to the complete on-the-fly adjustability of the screen settings, the operator can compensate for variations in the material instantaneously. Lenz Enterprises Inc. is a family business, and has been serving

western Washington State since 1976. Its mission is to preserve and enhance the environment by providing costeffective composting of farm residuals, land clearing debris, yard debris and food waste from commercial, residential and municipal sources. The company strives to create products and services beneficial to all the people of Western Washington and surrounding areas by providing alternatives to landfilling. Rather than burning or burying, Lenz promotes the reintroduction of organic materials to the earth, for healthier soils and better water quality. The company composts up to 45,000 tons per year at their facility in Stanwood, Snohomish County, Washington.

More Machines, More Parts, More Service 4th Annual Sales and Service Training Event Bigger Than Ever One of the things that has always distinguished Komptech is its focus on good customer service, and each year for the past four years the company has put on a service training event for its dealers. This year’s 4-day event, held the week of September 17 in Denver, was the biggest ever. Investing in expertise Currently over 300 Komptech machines are in operation in North America. More machines means more demand for service and parts, and Komptech is investing heavily to make 6

sure its users are well taken care of. A big part of that is getting our sales partners’ service and parts specialists to the “Expert” level, and this event was aimed squarely at that goal. The company flew in people from all of the 12 North American dealers, as well as technical experts from two plants in Germany and world headquarters in Austria, for a total of 70 attendees. Machines were in attendance as well – eight of them graced the Westin hotel parking lot, so attendees could go from classroom to machine just by stepping outside. Two of them, the Stonefex and

Joker, are new to the American market, and Komptech is proactively making sure that dealers can service them. The other machines, ranging from a Topturn X53 to a massive Multistar L3, are already in widespread use in this country. With upwards of 70 attendees, to keep class sizes small there were two groups that alternated between classroom and hands-on sessions. This year for the first time there was a round-table format – it wasn’t a oneway conversation. Instead, sales reps from the dealers made presentations as well as Komptech personnel, and

the emphasis was on an exchange of knowledge to find ways to improve service, equipment, and training. Parts play a big part Another first at this event was parts training; in fact, parts were a major focus and will remain so going forward. All parts needed for all Komptech machines are in stock in the US; the key to further speeding the supply of parts to users lies in effective relationships between the parts people at Komptech and its dealers. Some of the dealer parts specialists who attended had never actually seen the machines that the parts go with, so this was a great opportunity for them to get some up close and personal time with the machines as well as with the Komptech team. The event included a tour of Komptech’s parts warehouse, followed by a Q&A session. This was no small matter – this year the company doubled the size of the warehouse for the fourth time, so that if a Komptech machine needs it, we have it. But that’s not all Komptech goes the extra mile to train dealer service technicians. Three weeks prior to this event, there was an FG Wilson training on the Multistar L3, also in Denver. FG Wilson makes the genset for all of Komptech’s hybrid machines, and Komptech picked up the tab for dealer technicians to attend.

Racing Naturally the event also included time for team-building and just plain fun. Komptech rented a complete go-kart facility for an evening, and races were held from heats to finals. Dedicated to uptime Our machines are European-made, and American operators are always concerned about parts and service. It’s one of the first things potential customers ask us about. Komptech is dedicated to its customers’ business success, and that means proactively addressing the issue of availability. In fact, it’s designed into our machines right from the beginning with top-quality, US-sourced components from companies like Caterpillar and BoschRexroth. Sometimes these are not the cheapest, but we choose ready availability over price.

It might add a little to the price tag, but it means higher uptime and none of the “endless wait” horror stories you sometimes hear about other companies. We also address the issue by investing in parts stock – currently we have parts worth $2.2 million in our warehouse in Denver, centrally located to get anywhere in North America quickly. And naturally, we address it through service and parts training for our dealers. We make it available, we invest in it, and we incentivize it. It all means that when you’re in a spot, we’re on the spot, with exactly what you need.

Terminating Tires

South Dakota Company Puts the Terminator to Innovative Use Tires have long been a disposal headache – they don’t decompose, they’re a pain to landfill, and piles of old tires are ideal homes for rodents and great places for mosquitos to breed. What’s more, if they catch fire they can smolder for months. But in the Dakotas, one man has found an answer. The Standing Rock area straddles the border between North and South Dakota. Some years ago, environmental consultant Rhett Albers of Albers & Associates in Mobridge, SD was asked to put together an operation to handle local waste disposal. He did so, and immediately ran into a problem that wouldn’t go away – tires. The large proportion of residents on limited incomes meant that instead of buying new tires that last, a lot of people were buying retreads that wore out quickly. Landfilling fees discouraged proper disposal, so people were just keeping them. The area had a backlog of waste tires. Rhett was looking for some way to deal with them when Brad Kiecker of Komptech suggested shredding with the Terminator. After a couple of years of kicking the tires, Rhett decided to give it a try. He demonstrated the machine in March of 2012, started regular operations in June, and hasn’t looked back. Instead of a cost factor, it’s a revenue-generator. “We were impressed with the equipment,” he said. That might be an understatement. Its mobility lets him move it from site to site to provide shredding services to landfills over a wide area of North and South Dakota. Its omnivorous appetite lets him shred whatever other problem materials the customer might also have. Its tracks let it move on-site from pile to pile. But where the rubber really hits the road is

Did you know? 8

the Terminator’s sheer ability to chew through tires, 100 to 120 tons of them in an eight-hour day. “It’s actually hard to convince customers that we can handle their volume. They think we’ll be there for months, but we’re in and out in a couple of days,” Rhett said. But what to do with the tires once they’re shredded? Well, Rhett has thought about that – a lot. And he’s come up with plenty of uses for tire shred, right at the landfills where it’s made: Machinery pads: Most landfills are in areas of poor soil, which often means clay or shale. When it’s wet, machinery gets stuck. But tire shreds make a great bed – non-slip, firm, and porous for draining. Put a layer of aggregate over that, and you have a well-drained surface. Erosion control on unpaved roads: The same goes for haul roads – one company used tire shred instead of putting in a culvert. Pipe bedding: For methane and leachate collection pipes. Landfill cover: Tire shred is heavy and compacts well. Mixed with fill dirt, it’s an

An estimated 300 million tires are disposed of each year in the US. Currently only 10% are recycled; 40% are incinerated and the rest are landfilled.

ideal landfill cover. Its weight is a special advantage in the Dakotas, where there is usually a wind blowing and debris from landfills can travel long distances if not well covered. Landfills already have the tires; now they can turn them into useful materials. Rhett has no shortage of work, and anticipates the day when he’ll need a second Terminator – “or a third or a fourth,” he added. Prize-winner

In September 2012 Rhett and his company Standing Rock Sanitation Service were recognized by the State of South Dakota with an Innovation Award.

Pierre SD Deploys Topturn X53 to Boost Windrow Size

In May 2011 the landfill for the City of Pierre, SD took delivery of a new Komptech Topturn X53. It’s the smallest of the Topturns, but as Solid Waste Manager Val Keller said, “we’re a small operation, so for us it’s a big investment.” The new windrow turner was purchased to replace a Scarab that had reached the end of its working life. The major added benefit the Topturn brings is the fact that it can make windrows two feet higher than the Scarab could, for a significant increase in windrow volume. This is an important factor in view of the modest one acre pad of the Pierre landfill, and it makes all the difference in operational efficiency. Formerly, every autumn there would be a spike in yard waste volumes due to leaves, and the landfill would

frequently have to simply pile up excess leaves until windrow space came open. Now they can go ahead and windrow as the material comes in.

the Topturn has only about 100 operating hours under its belt. Crew Leader Rod Intorn noted, “So far it’s been a good product, and we hope it will last us a long time.”

The purchase process was a public invitation to bid, since the landfill is city-owned. Val was familiar with Komptech from trade shows and conferences, but what made the sale was the fact that Komptech was able to offer the right product at the right price. The Topturn was the only turner the landfill demo’d, and they were satisfied that it offered what they were looking for. To make sure replacement parts are available quickly, Komptech agreed to put parts on consignment, and the landfill pays for only what they use when they use it. However, the need hasn’t yet arisen since

The Pierre landfill serves the cities of Pierre and Fort Pierre, a total of about 18,000 people. With 11 employees who are crosstrained so they can each handle different jobs, the landfill provides composting, landfilling and waste baling services.

Komptech Knights Sales Stalwarts 10 Years, 100+ Machines

From left to right: Johannes Pohl, Josef Heissenberger, Todd Dunderdale, James Butler, Josef Imp

At the most recent Partner Day event in Austria, James Butler of Simplicity Engineering and Todd Dunderdale of Komptech USA were ‘knighted’ with the Gold and Diamond Komptech pin, in recognition of their 10 years of outstanding service in helping Komptech get established on the US market. James Butler was Komptech’s first dealer serving the Northeastern United States (NY, NJ, MA, CT, RI, VT, NH, ME). Ten years ago James sold his first Terminator to Pond View Recycling in Rhode Island, and the unit still works every day, with 9400 hours and counting. “The Terminator is the ideal shredder for C&D in the US, and we are very proud to be a Komptech Partner. Our work is made easier by the great support and technical backup we 10

receive from Komptech” said James, adding that he’s looking forward to the next 10 years. Todd Dunderdale has also been selling Komptech Equipment for over ten years, and he and James have sold more than 100 units between them. Todd started off selling for what was at the time called “Komptech Farwick” in California. There he developed the West Coast market and sold over 30 machines in California, Oregon, Washington, Arizona, and Texas. In 2005 Todd started Komptech USA, in order to have a factory presence in the US to provide better parts and service support for customers. His business model was to establish an extensive dealer network to provide fast local service as well as market exposure. It has been extremely successful, and currently there are

11 dealers in the US and two in Canada representing Komptech. As Todd put it, “I have always believed that Komptech produces the highest quality machines with the most advanced technology in the industry. But my dedication to Komptech ultimately stems from the integrity of the company. From top to bottom, they have always lived up to what they say they will do. We have developed a very tightly knit team and this has allowed us to be efficient and successful.” Komptech is proud of its many long term relationships with its partners around the world, whether dealer, employee or user. James and Todd’s thanks go out to everyone involved in marketing, selling and servicing Komptech equipment for the US market during the last ten years. We’re looking forward to the next 10 years!
