Cover designed for LSU Agenda
2015 / 2016 Langara Students’ Union Association Agenda / Day Planner is an annual publication is distributed for free to its members every semester.
The rocket and superhero illustrations imply the sense of going towards goals since the purpose of a day planner is also to set daily tasks done by a date. The fresh and energetic feel from the illustrations is designed to represent the young energy of the students. The yellow circles and clouds and blue circles with stars represents day and night relating to the objective of the daily planner. The Langara orange background stands for all the activities taking place at Langara.
A traveller’s guide to Stanley Park
A book of map and a book of guide combine together using creative binding to simplify the user experience of using map and guide.
The idea for this guide is to combine a map and a guide into one by designing a booklet. Based on my experience using one of the actual Stanley Park maps and guides, I aimed to solve the problem of the size and functionality by designing a guide that can be used comfortably, in which maps are on the left and the corresponding information on the right. This way, looking up the map and reading the guide becomes easy and handy. The two colors scheme helps to differentiate the map sections.

Nine O’Clock Gun
53
The 9 O’Clock Gun is a 12-pound muzzleloaded naval cannon that is shot every night at 9 p.m.
At the very tip of Brockton Point is the lighthouse, which is easily accessed by continuing along the seawall. Built in 1914, this is the second lighthouse on this site. The first, consisting of lanterns atop a mast, was erected in 1890. The current lighthouse is now automated but for many years a lighthouse keeper lived on site in the keeper’s cottage which used to sit on the grassy mound behind the lighthouse but is now sadly gone.
On October 15, 1898 the gun was fired for the first time in Stanley Park at noon. The Brockton Point lighthouse keeper, William D. Jones, originally detonated a stick of dynamite over the water until the cannon was installed. The cannon is now activated automatically with an electronic trigger which was installed by the Parks Board electrical department. It is still loaded daily with a black powder charge. The fluorescent lights illuminating the gun from overhead go out exactly ten seconds before it fires, and turn back on a few seconds afterward.
Brockton Point is a place full of history and worth researching at length as it tells of a time when the area was in many ways used very differently down through the years.

Totem Poles, Shore to Shore Monument
54
The nine totem poles are BC’s most visited tourist attraction. The collection started at Lumberman’s Arch in the 1920s, when the Park Board bought four totems from Vancouver Island’s Alert Bay. More purchased totems came from Haida Gwaii (Queen Charlotte Islands) and the BC central coast Rivers Inlet, to celebrate the 1936 Golden Jubilee. In the mid 1960s, the totem poles were moved to the attractive and accessible Brockton Point. The Skedans Mortuary Pole is a replica as the original was returned home to Haida Gwaii. In the late 1980s, the remaining totem poles were sent to various museums for preservation and the Park Board commissioned and loaned replacement totems. The ninth and most recent totem pole, carved by Robert Yelton of the Squamish Nation, was added to Brockton Point in 2009, September.
GUIDE B
Coast Salish Welcome Gateways Three beautifully carved, red cedar portals welcome visitors to the Brockton Point Visitor Centre and to the traditional lands of the Coast Salish people. Their form represents the traditional slant-roof style of Coast Salish architecture. The gateways show the history and thriving modern culture of Coast Salish people. Constructed over three years and installed in 2008, the gateways were created by Coast Salish artist Susan Point, in collaboration with Coast Salish Arts; Vancouver Storyscapes (a City of Vancouver Social Planning project to encourage aboriginal people to share their stories through a variety of media); the Musqueam, Squamish, and Tsleil-Watuth First Nations; and the Vancouver Park Board.

A campaign to bring up the public awareness toward invalid 9-1-1 call
Group project with Aline Rocha / Chayann Aravena
9-1-1 is for emergencies where health, safety or property is in immediate jeopardy, or there is a crime in progress. If you need police assistance that is not of an emergency nature (e.g. your situation is a valid police matter but does not require immediate attention), please use your local ten digit non-emergency numbers.
Everyday thousands of non-emergency calls are made to 9-1-1 dispatchers. Those calls defeat the purpose of 9-1-1 service, which is immediate response to emergency situations. The objective of this campaign is to educate people about what is a qualified emergency and to bring awareness about the nonemergency services.Â

Logo and packaging design for a Thai herb store
A Thai herb store located in downtown Vancouver looking to provide products for a market that likes natural products and clean and simple design.
The name “Therb” combines the words “Thai” and “herb” to communicate the origin of the product and make it easy to remember. The design of the logotype visually translates the name by using a bay. Green is the national color of Thailand to reinforce the concept and bring the natural feeling. Typeface Risaltyp appeals to the clean and simple design street culture in downtown Vancouver.

A bird house for a sparrow
The size of the House Sparrow birdhouse is 4 inches in width x 4 inches in length x 9-12 inches in height and entrance hole should be 1 3/16 – 2 inches in diameter.
The bird house is designed to be fun and ironic by using and upside-down house shape, positioning the door at the roof. Adding a big based was needed to stabilize the structure, which can also be used to hang the bird house on a tree. Since the bird house should be functional in an outdoor environment, the angle-top structure prevents rain from getting into the inner space.
A paper wreath created for Christmas
With the motif “Kinship”, a scene of gathering in Christmas is created on the wreath.
The design of the wreath connects to the motif—”kinship” with a tale-like home scene in Christmas. By overlapping different layers of representations of objects in a stage, the overlays of winter snow and the warmth of Christmas family gathering can be shown through the wreath.
End wall for Design Formation 2016 Grad Show Exhibit
The theme for the grad show was Framework, which presents what is behind the design. The design of the wall is based on the contrast between the structure and finished areas to represent the process behind the final design that the public does not see but is essential. The wall had to be cohesive with the entrance archway and continue the design of the exhibit.

To highlight Vancouver’s beauty with the theme “Kaleidoscope” by integrating sponsor-Interstyle’s glass tiles to create an inspiring, innovative and beautiful exhibition while applying the techniques learned in Design Formation.
Kaleidoscope structure inside the exhibit piece
This exhibit is to form a user friendly, fun, and informative exhibition by creating a spacious layout with a good flow so that each side of the exhibit piece can be visible from every side to suit a variety of people. When looking into the kaleidoscope the picture is distorted and can have many implications. Just like how Vancouver has its wonders and has an untouhed innocence of nature uncovering every bit of surprise it has to offer.

A dress reinterpretation in paper
One shouldered punk reminiscent little black dress shown on the 2004 Paris Fashion Week.
This is a reinterpretation of the Saint Laurent one shoulder punk reminiscent little black dress shown on the 2004 Paris Fashion Week. The dress is a combination of craziness and elegance with the puffy shoulder that makes the dress stunning. Layered tissue paper is used to mimic the puffiness on the one shoulder. The body is made by gluing two pieces together to give the illusion of one.
