TAKSIM GREEN HUB CREATING SUSTAINAB LE CO MMUNITY
TAKSIM GREEN HUB
The design o f Taksim master plan starts wit h two seemingly unrelated questions: 1. Have we ever wondered why we are fascinated by Taksim square? 2. W hat exactly do we want in Taksim square? "First, we want a place ...
Not because we can reconnect wit h nature by cycling , running and doing all sort o f outdoor activities, Not because granny could look forward to a weekend wit h t he whole family, enjoying a picnic on t he roo ftop, watching t he city skyline while laying in t he grass, Not because we can finally have an outdoor arena to support t he Ataturk Cultural Center performances, Not because we can go to t he street market and find any sort o f food, Not because Aybar and her local art group can have a chance to exhibit t heir artworks, Not because we can see and discuss about all t he future city planning and transformation. MAKING SUSTAINAB LE CO MMUNITY
The vision:" A place for everyone and everyt hing." Taksim Green Hub is t he largest cultural initiative o f its kind in t he world which will establish a major centre for outdoor/indoor events from forum for participatory city planning to music, performing and visual arts on a dramatic view-site in t he heart o f Istanbul. The cultural venues include a City lab wit h a museum o f modern art and a Civic center and outdoor Arena which will support t he new adjacent Ataturk centre. These facilities will encourage home-grown artistic talent and ensure t hat t he district provides
long lasting benefits for t he people o f Istanbul. B ringing toget her places to live and work, wit h galleries, studios, shops, cafes and restaurants, t he mixed-use district is designed to capture and recreate t he energy and unique urban character o f Istanbul, integrating t he cultural venues wit h t he everyday life o f t he city. The district features a magnificent new terraced park. Its sculpted terrain, wit h dense tree planting, will provide shade and shelter and bring t he countryside into t he city, while a series o f outdoor terraces will link t he Gezi
Park to t he Bosphorus and t he ot her landmarks. An uninterrupted five-kilometre-long greenway will give t he people o f Istanbul t heir first chance to look back at t he city's iconic skyline and t he needs o f pedestrians and cars are balanced by sinking t he main vehicle route below ground level. The heart o f t he endeavor was t he creation o f valuable human living space as well as compensation o f green space in what has become, especially in crowded cities like Istanbul, an important marketing argument.

Layered O rganisation: t he masterplan is organized into 3 layers:1. The linear park, which closes an existing green way passing t hrough t he Taskisla teleferic t he Macka Park and t he Vodafone arena stadium ending over Taksim square wit h its new roo f cit y garden. The loop provides a safe green pat h for cyclists and pedestrians to promote wellness and a sustainable lifest yle.

Great value for t he communit y
The green areas o f Taksim Green Hub represents an immense asset to all t he facilities o f t he Beyoglu district . The huge esplanade surrounded by shops and restaurants cinemas and hotels benefit from t heir green surroundings. Equally, all t he companies located in t he extraordinary o ffices gain significant value because t heir employees find a nice working environment in t he integrated green space, which increases t heir wealt h and happiness. The green landscape architecture is also a marketing argument o f t he Marmara hotel and t he Inter Continental Hotel which
will o ffer t heir guests a quintessential fantastic view o f t he park from t heir lo ft y heights. In t he heart o f t he cit y t he Taksim Green Hub is a green oasis for all, which will make t he location highly at tractive. The site has been redesigned to protect t he existing park and trees and extend t he green area as green space or green roo fs to improve t he t hermal comfort, reduce air pollution and lower t he emission o f co2. Features such as intimate open space, extensive greenery, traditional covered walkways and t he innovative environmental shade , are all
designed to provide weat her protection, improve ventilation , shading and rainwater recycling collection. The design creates a new open space identit y but more importantly gives neighbours and visitors t he sensations o f nature in t he heart o f t he cit y. Progect description: The Taksim green hub design comprises a total o f 40 corten steel planters supported by as many as columns t hat will rise above t he Gezi park to create a new parkland. The area o f t he planter is o f 265 sqm , laid out on

Hundred different species o f indigenous trees and plants and meadow species will fill t he planters to survive Istanbul hot summers and freezing winters. As t he raised terraces merge into t he square , t he slope increases gently by t he 4 % on t he long side and t he 8% percent on t he short side along t he Cumhuriyet Avenue enabling access for people wit h disabilities. culture, t he new terrace will be an hardworking canopy for t he underneat h square , to accommodate market activities and t he new building for art and civic centre. The buildings will have sloped roo fs and generous terraces and will o ffer views o f t he cit y. The public realm at Taksim Square will be a fascinating opportunit y to create a new environment for a modern cit y. The master plan has created a variet y o f public spaces which will form a patchwork o f complementary spaces across t he neighbourhood, wit h differing characters and opportunities.

The Linear park: Loop
The intervention is a light infrastructure t hat utilizes elements which already exists and some new element like t he pavilion and t he new pedestrian bridge to be bet ter connect t he park to t he public library. This bridge is located on t he east side o f t he site and is t herefore subject to furt her assessments . If for any political, financial or legal reason t he proposed bridge is not feasible, t here is an alternative plan for a slow double-lane avenue at t he road level. The pat hs are turned and twisted to always find a gentle sloping pat h leading pedestrians and bicyclists comfortably up and down t he hillside.
