bu76um52 Macro and micro scale problems of Taksim square and its surroundings and solutions Transportation: Since Taksim Square is one of the most important focal points of Istanbul, special importance has been given to transportation in every period. For this reason, there are various alternatives for accessing the square and there is no access problem. - Metro: M2 line passes through Taksim. The M7 line, which will be put into service soon, is connected to Taksim by funicular from Kabataş. - Tram: T1, the first modern tram line in Istanbul, ends in Kabataş and connects to Taksim by funicular. T2 nostalgic tram runs between Tunnel and Taksim square. - Cable car: The cable car that runs between Maçka - Taşkışla provides entertainment services rather than transportation. - Highway: Tarlabaşı Boulevard, which is one of the strongest urban roads of Istanbul and Cumhuriyet Caddesi, are underground in Taksim and provides uninterrupted motor vehicle transportation. İnönü, Mete and Sıraselviler Streets are the roads that provide access to Taksim Square on the ground. - Pedestrian axes: Istiklal Street, which is the most important trade and entertainment axis of Istanbul since the 19th century, has been pedestrianized and has an intense pedestrian mobility between Tunnel and Taksim. Apart from this, the sidewalks of the Cumhuriyet, Tarlabaşı, Sıraselviler and İnönü streets and the Gezi Park axis are other arteries that support pedestrian access to the square. Although there is no problem in accessing the square; The transportation facilities mentioned above make the square a transfer point. This situation creates a mess that is waiting for a solution in Taksim Square. Those who come to visit, see, gather and watch events and those who use the square as a crossing area coincide on the same plane. This is one of the problems waiting for a solution in the square. In a recent survey, the fact that 70% of users define the square as useless confirms this finding. Our solution suggestions on transportation: Due to the underground and funiculars and underground highway traffic, underground areas of various levels have been built under Taksim Square. However, the relationship of these areas with the square and each other has not been handled with a holistic approach and has not been solved at a sufficient level. In the proposed project, all the items related to transportation have been taken under the ground. All transportation relations are resolved at the level of 69.00 - 72.00. Mete Avenue has been taken to the level of 72.00 by taking into account the topographic status, all bus, minibus, minibus and taxi stops associated with this street have been resolved at the same level. The existing subway, funicular stations are integrated with the newly proposed underground use areas. The metro exits, which were in a negative position in the square, were rearranged and new necessary exits were created. In this way, the square has been given the opportunity to be organized in such a way that it will include navigation, cruise, gathering and activities. Tram: It is recommended to extend the “nostalgic tram” line, which serves between Tunnel and Taksim, to Harbiye. Thus, accessibility is provided with a public transportation opportunity parallel to the pedestrian areas. Bicycles: Bicycles will be used for transportation and touring purposes, with regular bicycle paths throughout the area. Both environmental awareness and human health make this necessary. Parking Lots: There is a 500 vehicle capacity parking lot next to the CRR Concert Hall. Considering the parking lots under the New Taksim Mosque and Opera House under construction and the parking lots of the big hotels in the area, it is not necessary to arrange new parking lots for the region. Strong access by public transport also confirms this decision. Green areas: There is an important green space potential in Taksim and its immediate surroundings, especially Gezi Park within the boundaries of the competition. However, these areas are fragmented by motor vehicle roads, passive green areas, some of which cannot be used.

Solution suggestions for green areas: One of the main suggestions of the project is to create one of the most important green areas of Istanbul by combining these disconnected, neglected and unused green areas. The basis of this arrangement; Gezi Park, which is one of the main pedestrian axes (Taksim- Nişantaşı Art Park), constitutes the “recreation, culture and tourism” axis. The “flying pedestrian bridge” that connects this axis with two points connects the green areas disconnected from each other. Access to green areas with vertical shafts is provided at necessary points. Another function of the bridge is vista element. A view of the Bosphorus can be seen on the green areas along the bridge.

“Ecological bridges” have been designed in places to provide pedestrian connection and ecological continuity between the two slopes of the divided Dolmabahçe Valley. Problems and solutions for pedestrian movements: Taksim Square has an intense pedestrian mobility due to its transportation, culture, trade, tourism and entertainment functions. Istiklal Avenue, which lies between Tunnel and Taksim and has been pedestrianized, is one of the leading causes of this mobility. There is no organized pedestrian area outside this street. The potential of Gezi Park cannot be used effectively today. From Taksim Square to the north; Gezi Park, Ceylan Interkontinental Hotel, Park Hotel, Hyatt Hotel, ITU Taşkışla Campus, Radio house, Hilton Hotel, Orduevi, Muhsin Ertuğrul Theater, Open Air Theater, Lütfi Kırdar Congress Center, Cemal Reşit Rey Concert Hall and connect Nişantaşı Art Park. ends with. Strengthening this axis and ensuring continuity of pedestrian and green areas is one of the main suggestions of the project. The “flying pedestrian bridge” strengthens the relationship of this axis with green areas. Partial suggestions and solutions within the competition area: Usage scenarios of Taksim Square With the underground transportation planning and the new arrangement in the subway entrances, the square has been freed from users for transportation purposes. Completely meeting, trip, concert, etc. made available for events. The new subway entrances are designed in such a way that they do not hinder and be affected by activities in the square. Usage alternatives: Monument oriented: Meetings on memorials, national holidays and days.

Gezi Park arrangement suggestions Gezi Park is protected with the entrance staircase and the retaining walls facing the square due to its importance in urban memory. In the past, the section where the Ä°nĂśnĂź statue is located will serve as an activity area and a stage. The southern part, which preserves the integrity of the park, has been preserved exactly by landscape restoration, and the regulations required by the metro exit and newly formed pedestrian relations will be made in the northern part. Culture & Art Canopy In the section where the old Gezi Park shops are located, an area with high density of cultural functions, consisting of steel construction eaves and open and semi-closed sections, has been created. The upper part of the eaves contributes to Gezi Park as a green area. If under the eaves; It is recommended to include functions such as open exhibition areas, art gallery, book sales booths, craft sales - exhibition areas, areas for street artists. This proposal aims to keep the memory of the Travel Shops alive culturally. The surroundings of Hagia Triada Church An arrangement aiming to improve the relationship the church establishes with the square is proposed by streamlining the construction around the church. The church is sitting The 81.00 level is recommended as a viewing terrace, and it is aimed to provide the legal development rights of the existing structures in the area between the 69.00 level, which is the underground transportation level, and the terrace. In the second stage, this arrangement will be resolved at the preliminary project level. Opera house - square relationship Mete Street has been taken underground in order to strengthen the relation of the Opera building under construction to the square. A connection was also provided to the Opera lower entrance from the shaft on the flying pedestrian bridge.
bu76um52 New Taksim Mosque environmental relations A new subway entrance was organized considering the pedestrian flow that will occur especially on Fridays and special religious days. The access problem of the mosque parking lot will be solved in the second stage. About the team structure for the second stage: In the second stage, in addition to the existing team, the experts listed below will participate in the study. As an author: -
City planner
-
Landscape architect
As a consultant: - Civil engineer - “Flying pedestrian bridge” and “culture and art icicle”, which are among our main suggestions, are design elements that require significant engineering participation. For this reason, a civil engineer will join our team in the 2nd stage. - Archaeologist - We believe that an archaeologist who is knowledgeable about the archeology of the city of Istanbul will contribute to the development of the project, even though the ruins likely to be found in the area have been significantly destroyed by previous excavations. - Painter, and sculptor.
