You reach the lodge by gliding through the rainforest in a carved-out wooden canoe. Ingredients for the hearty, home-made meals (included in the price of the room) come mainly from neighbouring farms. Designed as a tourism project to aid the conservation of the Iguazú Rainforest, profits from the lodge help fund biological studies and environmental improvements on its reserve and the neighbouring community. Naturalists, ecologists and native Guarani people offer tours and talks about the jungle ecosystem. Expect to see monkeys, exotic birds (parrots and toucans) and countless stunning butterflies. Salta and Beyond The name Salta comes from the Aymara Indian word 'sagta', meaning 'beautiful one', and as you meander through the town's narrow colonial streets – lined with perfectly preserved 18th- and 19th-century buildings and houses with wooden balconies – you will see the name still very much applies. Nearby in Cafayate, drive through pink sand valleys dotted with cactus and taste the region's aromatic white wine, Torrontes. From the surreal Seven Colours Hill in Purmamarca, follow the Inca caravan route through Humahuaca gorge, a UNESCO World Heritage-listed site, where today, Quechuan women tend to their goats amid the ancient empire's ruins.

JakoTango Riding Safaris offers adventures on horseback with experienced guide and expert horseman Jakob van Plessen who was raised in Argentina and has been around horses since childhood. The journey begins at Estancia Tres Lagos on the shores of Lake Filo, north of Bariloche in the Andean Mountains. Here, the ride allows you to trek through picturesque mountain valleys astride your Gaucho pony. These purpose-bred Creolle ponies are sturdy, honest, stocky and able to trek up mountain passes which are otherwise inaccessible. The romance of your journey continues to Isla Don Felipe, a lush green island in the Tigre Delta, located upstream from Buenos Aires and the site of vast fruit plantations in the 19th century. The Tudor-styled villa is a welcome change from Patagonian climate and gives riders a chance to recharge before the next riding experience. Journeying south, a surprise awaiting you is the equally amazing homestead–Estancia El Boqueron–architecturally traditional in style and set in magnificent gardens, forests and farm lands. Both properties are owned by Jakob’s family and offer impeccable hospitality and access to elegant private homes not often open to the general public.
Those who enjoy hiking will want to explore the farm. You can also take a gentle ride through horizons of golden wheat fields, visiting neighbouring estancias en-route. Hunter-jumpers will want to try the 28-jump steeplechase course. For those keen on polo, take to the field and enjoy the thrill of the sport that is a long-standing Argentine tradition. There is also rafting, shooting, fly fishing, wallowing in cool, turquoise mountain rivers, croquet, pimms cocktails on the porch and plenty of Argentine tango–all on your doorstep. The ten-night adventures, limited to six riders, offer luxurious accommodations and breathtaking scenery. It is an equestrian experience of a lifetime. Departures are from November through to March.

Uruguay
Sandwiched between Brazil and Argentina, tiny Uruguay has a vibrant, yet under-the-radar, cosmopolitan feel—as well as historic estancias and surf-pounded beaches. Since it’s only a boat ride – or quick helicopter jaunt – from Buenos Aires, you will undoubtedly notice numerous simpatico similarities between the neighbours: Lingering over coffee and wine at cosy cafés is a legitimate hobby and asados turn out perfectly charcoal-roasted succulent steaks. Locals tote silver flasks filled with turbo-charged yerba maté tea (helpful for those late nights). Pretty and un-touristy Montevideo shines with historic Spanish and Italian architecture, charming small museum, local candombeé music hot spots and world-class shopping. Surrounding the capital is flat and forested countryside where the gaucho lifestyle thrives and staying on one of the vast estancias is a highlight to any holiday. Feel the country’s Portuguese past as you walk the charming cobblestone streets of the UNESCO protected village of Colonia del Sacramento. During the South American summer, jet-setters descend upon sandy Punta del Este as chic hotels, restaurants and nightclubs open their doors to stylish night owls and the otherwise sleepy beach town becomes a baby St. Tropez. And when you need a break from the glitz, visit some of the practically undiscovered beaches stretching up the coast towards Brazil.

High Andean peaks where majestic condors soar, steamy rainforests of the Amazon basin, nearly limitless coastal destinations and the almost mythical Machu Picchu. Once you see the mystically enchanting Andean highlands of Peru, you will understand why the Incas considered this place as the centre of their empire. Cradled by cloud-shrouded peaks, surrounded by cultivated fields of quinoa, the Inca erected stone temples without mortar. They laid roads the length of the country and melted gold into every form imaginable–from wall décor to hand plows. Over eight centuries later, we still thrill to seeing the sun rising behind the ruins of Machu Picchu and to hiking the mythical Inca Trail. This spellbinding country also has desert-meets-sea beaches, lush Amazonian jungle and magnificent volcanoes, as well as captivating cities that inspire travellers both young and old. Wander through a first century adobe city, feel colonial ghosts in the glorious Cusco cathedrals, fly over the mysterious Nazca desert drawings, visit the Uros people on floating islands in Lake Titicaca and feast on alpaca steak and ceviche in stylish eateries in Lima. Or go off the beaten track to the alabaster city of Arequipa, spot condors from a gorge twice as deep as the Grand Canyon, sandboard or buggy over dunes in Paracas and sail to Peru’s own version of the Galapagos Islands.

Ecuador
Amazonian rainforests, Andean peaks, foggy cloud forests, white-water rafting, the Galapagos Islands and a rich indigenous heritage–all this and more in Ecuador. Wedged between Colombia and Peru, little Ecuador is one of the most geographically and culturally diverse countries on the planet. Split by the Andes, a rocky spine of snow-capped volcanoes, the ancient Amazon is to the east. And to the west are misty bird-filled cloud forests, untouched coastline and, of course, the awe-inspiring Galapagos Islands. One day you will pick through hand-woven wool sweaters at a chilly indigenous market in Otavalo; the next day you will sweat all over your binoculars while spying on howler monkeys in the Amazon jungles of the Oriente. For the adrenaline junky, the choices are outrageous. Mountaineering and trekking are world-class (try the Quilatoa Loop); toss in some horseback riding and surfing and you will go home with a happily aching body. For the culture vulture, Ecuador’s indigenous heritage of traditional costumes and highland markets will enchant you. Ecuador’s exquisite capital Quito is the perfect base. Before jetting off to explore, meander the majesty that is the city’s UNESCO protected old town, the largest and best preserved in South America, drive north to stay at historic colonial haciendas and ride horseback in the countryside past Inca ruins.
