If Asia were a person, we would say it has an old soul. It’s seen in the kind, crinkled face of the woman who lovingly guides her granddaughter through Tai Chi moves in the park each morning. In the shrug and grin of the fisherman as he returns at the end of a long day with a small catch. In the level gaze of the barefoot Buddhist monk who gathers alms before the sun is up. This is part of why I love Asia, and return often. To regain perspective and remember to appreciate what is good now. Remember to revere the past, but focus on the future. Remember to prepare food carefully, wasting nothing, and savoring every delicious bite. Remember to take time to greet neighbors and strangers politely and assist the elderly and the young… and the lost tourist. Which is not to say I am immune to the attractions of Asia’s idyllic beaches, full moon parties, ancient monuments and magnificent mountains; trips to Asia satisfy both the desire for peace and the desire for adventure. Enjoy your journey,
