PANCRATIUM MARITIMUM SEA DAFFODIL

Pancratium maritimum is a white flower with a long neck and linear leaves, evergreen. It can grow up to 40 centimetres (16 in). It’s flower fruits are light and they look like small pieces of coal which can float on the surface of the sea. The flowers have a pleasing, exotic and very subtle lily scent, which becomes apparent during still, summer nights.

ď‚— The beauty of this

plant inspired Minoan artists who depicted it on their frescoes.

THE FORTRESS OF PALAIOKASTRO

Palaiokastro is a triangular Venetian fortress, built on a cliff above the sea, 8km west of Heraklion. Today, only part of the walls of the fortress remain standing. There was built a Genoese castle at the beginning of the 13th century. The Venetians rebuilt it at the end of the 16th century.

The fort of Palaiokastro is built on uneven levels due to the fact that it is located on a hill. Integrated on a side is the winged lion of St. Mark, which is clearly visible from a distance. A similar emblem can be found on the castle of Koule (castello a mare)

 CASTELLO •

A MARE

The Castello a Mare was possibly first fortified by the Arabs in the 9th or 10th century. In 1300, the tower was destroyed by an earthquake, but it was repaired. In 1462, the Venetians improved the fortifications of Candia. Old ships were filled with stone and were sunk to form a breakwater and increase the area of the platform on which the fortress was built. The fortress was completed in 1540.

In 1630, the fort was armed with 40 cannons The Ottomans eventually took the fort in 1669, after the Venetians had surrendered the entire city. The fortress has been restored, and it is now open to the public. Art exhibitions and cultural activities are occasionally held at the fort.

MOROSINI FOYNTAIN Morosini fountain: is placed in the center of Heraklion. It is considered one of the most beautiful Venetian sights of Heraklion and it is preserved in a very good condition. The purpose of its construction was not aesthetic but to supply with water the city. The inauguration took place on April 25, 1628 - St. Mark's Day. The inspiration for the project was from Francis Morosini, who gave his name to the fountain. The octal-shaped reservoir increases its periphery, so that more people can collect water.

MOROSINI FOYNTAIN The representations in the lobes are taken from Greek mythology and from the marine world. It is a great place to take a walk and it is visited by many tourists every year.

ALMYROS RIVER Almyros River is located a few kilometers west of Heraklion and it is an enchanting landscape for every visitor. The river is characterized by many as mysterious because its sources are supposed to be underground waters of unspecified length and origin. Part of the groundwater comes from mountain springs, but the origin of the other currents, that form the salty water composition, is unknown.

ALMYROS RIVER Impressive is the fact, that in the spring, when the lake supplies the largest amount of water, the river’s water is drinkable. Equally enchanting is the surface of the river combined with the lake and the palm trees that end up in the bay of Heraklion. Almyros River is one of the most important parts of our cultural heritage.
