Ayurveda has blessed us with multiple, effective and harmless treatments and medications. Viddha Karma is one of the eight Shastrakarma as defined in Sushrut Samhita. Viddha Karma also known as “Vedhan chikitsa” is the treatment of puncturing or piercing certain points that reduces pain and also helps to reverse the mechanism of pathology in certain possible way. It is also known as Suchivedhana.
Now a day, Viddhakarma has come to major treatment stream and has become widely popular day by day in pain management and is used as main therapy in the management of Musculoskeletal disorders like Low Backache, Shoulder Joint pain, Cervical Pain etc. It is also used in some chronic non responding ailments such as retinal disorders, abdominal diseases, ENT disorders, respiratory diseases, urinary system diseases and many more.
Pain is the common complaint in any musculoskeletal disorder particularly, pain related to work. Considering the cost effectiveness, practice of vidhakarma related to Pain management is increasing day by day. Ayurvedic surgery in ancient India was extremely advanced today there was no doubts that ayurvedic Viddhakarma originated from practice of using needles in surgery and the knowledge of special points (marmashtana).
In time of Maharaja Ashoka near about 8th century BC, at the Indian Buddhist University, Takshashila, under the auspices of King Ashoka, the study of Listed Science was conducted by a pioneer of Buddhist theology, 'Mosk'. Acharya Mosk was a staunch advocate of non-violence, urging any of his disciples to wield a weapon not allowed of course, he also insisted on not using the weapon for treatment.
This same religious significance lead to the birth of medical systems such as VIDDHAKARMA. Martial arts, now considered one of the most important sports, was born as a form of therapy in which the opponent is attacked at certain points of the body without a weapon for self-defense, which is the basic principle of VIDDHAKARMA therapy. The spread of VIDDHAKARMA therapy, which originated on the basis of Buddhism and developed on the basis of ancient scriptures and mysticism, is due to the scientific and cultural heritage of India.
In ancient time, VIDDHAKARMA was frequently used by qualified vaidyas. Its quick responding and least time consuming treatment modality with needles, which is indeed quite impressive. This method of treatment became prevalent all over India and developed from India…. Yes you read it right… It’s not the modified form of acupuncture which originated from china to India. It’s one of the purest form of Acharya Sushruta’s surgical expertise, knowledge and clinical implementation. After becoming prevalent all over India, Viddhakarma, later on widely got spread in to China, Japan, Korea, and Sri Lanka. VIDDHAKARMA therapy also has a special place in the United States recently. Due to the predominance of Buddhism in China, there was a large class of people who believed in it, so a lot of research was done on it. That is why VIDDHAKARMA therapy is known as form of acupuncture and part of Traditional Chinese Medicine which is not at all true. These both treatment modalities are totally different depending on their basic principles and mode of action.
Many get confuse Viddhakarma as an Acupuncture method. The principles used in Viddhakarma are entirely different than Acupuncture. Viddhakarma points are in relation to Marma points and uses particular Viddhakarma Shalaka for treatment. Viddhakarma points are based on cell morphology as defined in Vaisheshik Darshan, a branch of philosophy accepted in Ayurveda. In Acupuncture therapy, it involves the selection of specific points in the body, called meridians, and the flow of oxygen through the meridians throughout the body which is called "chi" in Chinese. The meridians connect the whole body to dynamic energy, harmonizing with the ecologiViddhakarma cal energy of the universe, providing evidence of the ubiquitous Loka-Purush samya siddhant. This again proves that acupuncture is originated from Viddhakarma.
METHOD OF TREATMENT
VIDDHAKARMA therapy involves selecting certain points of the body depending upon our purpose. Few numbers of needles are placed on those points for few minutes at a fixed pressure and at a certain distance. It is done mainly depending upon pathology we want to manage with. It is also useful as a medicine to treat certain type of acute form of pain as well as in the treatment of important diseases.
DISEASES TREATED WITH VIDDHAKARMA THERAPY
• Wide range of pain like- lower back pain, Pain in the groin, Migraine, Sciatica, Muscle pain, Frozen shoulder (shoulder pain), Neck pain • Different types of ophthalmic conditions starting from conjunctivitis to glaucoma and retinal diseases such as macular edema, macular degeneration, optic atrophy, retinal hemorrhages, retinal detachment etc. • Acute painful conditions like- Renal colic, Appendicitis, Cholecystitis, Pancreatitis, Gastritis etc. • ENT conditions like- Tinnitus, Deafness, Anosmia, Nasal blockage, deviated nasal septum, Sinusitis etc. • Stress, Anxiety, Depression, Sleep disturbance etc.
HOW IT WORKS?
Viddhakarma is a sterile procedure of puncturing or piercing selected points with special hollow needles called as “Viddha karma shalaka.” The immune system responses to this treatment by releasing endorphin which helps to reduce pain. This is how it can be explained in contemporary Medical language. It is implied to give an instant and acute pain relief. It doesn’t require any internal medication as an additive to enhance its effect.
Viddha and Siravedha(bloodletting) is a part of Ayurvedic treatment along with other Ayurvedic treatments.
As per Ayurveda, Viddhakarma works over Tridosha and Rakta. It open ups the route of entrapped Vayu in place of pathology and help it to move freely in body providing proper place of work. In addition by keeping entrapped Vayu free, it also promotes micro circulation.
VIDDHAKARMA therapy causes the body to secrete chemicals called opioids, which reduce pain levels in the body, while maintaining oxygen levels throughout the body. The balance of the three pillars vizVayu-Pitta-Kapha of the body is maintained. Vayu is the regulator in the body and is also responsible for pain in the body, which maintains the balance of energy and external energy in the body.
BENEFITS OF VIDDHA:
• It is a counter irritant without dermal allergies. • Releases endorphins and enzymes that relieve pain. • It indulge with scientific method of generating local static electricity generated that leads to polarization on cellular level, inducing micro currents; thereby moving metabolite waste products from cells to channels of transportation. • Most cost-effective treatment for Patient and
Physician too. • It is an OPD procedure, where patient doesn’t need to be hospitalized.
Viddhakarma therapy has spread to United States and other European countries in the 20th century. In addition, its scope of work has been proven by research through meta-analysis, which has proven the effectiveness of VIDDHAKARMA therapy in chronic back pain. In today's modern age, articles have been published in many scientific journals, proving the effects of Viddhakarma in many chronic as well as acute ailments. Researches have proven the effects of viddhakarma along with Agnikarma in diseases such as high blood pressure, migraine, heart disease, particularly in improving heart functions. Whereas, the original evidence lays in the ancient medical texts Sushruta Samhita since thousands of years back.
In the language of modern medical science, every nucleus is a set of nerves that carry a certain type of chemical substance, which is why we can experience the sensation of physical-mental pain. Acharya Sushruta has called eternal Ayurvedic Marma Chikitsa as half the treatment of the body because in the place of Marma there is the place of Soma, Vayu, Agni, Sattva, Raj, Tam and Bhutatma.
That is why it can be said that VIDDHAKARMA is based on the essence of medicine, the seeds of which were sown in the form of Ayurvedic medicine texts by our ancient Acharyas years ago. Just as the Gita contains the solution to every problem, so does the ancient eternal Ayurvedic medicine treats and solves every mental and physical ailment.
