1. DIONISIA (DIANNE) MARAGOUDAKIS-SOPHINOS Dianne is the recording secretary for the Cretan Voice chapter and the PAA’s District 7 Governor. She’s also a member of the Lake Park Historic Society and the Friends of Lake Park Public Library. Born and raised in Springfield, Mass., Dianne moved to Florida in 1978. She has her MBA in aviation and lives in and works in Lake Park, Fla., with her husband Louis and their three sons, Alexander, Andrew and Adam.
2. DEMETRI MAZACOUFA, ESQ. Demetri is the current president of the Samaria Chapter (No. 711) of the PAA and a trustee of the Pancretan Endowment Fund (PEF). He is an attorney in Atlanta, who claims his Cretan lineage through his mother Aryiro (née Tsourounakis) who was born in the village of Kalleryianna, near Kastelli, Kissamou.
3. MICHAEL SOFIANOS Jr. Michael is senior at Suncoast High School in Riviera Beach, Fla., and will be attending the University of Florida this summer. He is a member of the Cretan Voice of West Palm Beach, Fla., and is very enthusiastic and passionate about learning and practicing his Cretan culture.
4. JOSEPH ANTONAKAKIS Joseph is president of the PYA Delaware Valley Chapter TALOS and an active member of the N.J. Hellenic Federation. He represented the Cretan youth during the pilgrimage to Constantinople. Joseph is a second-year student at Rutgers University studying behavioral and social psychology.

Celebrating and Making History

his month we celebrate the 72nd anniversary of the Battle of Crete during World War II. On the morning of May 20, 1941, the Nazis launched an airborne invasion of Crete, code-named Operation Mercury. Greeks and the Allied forces along with Cretan civilians bravely defended the island. After one day of fighting, the Germans had suffered extreme casualties. The Allied troops were confident they would prevail against the German invasion. The next day, through miscommunication and the failure of Allied commanders to grasp the situation, the Maleme airfield in western Crete fell to the Germans, enabling them to fly in reinforcements and overwhelm the defenders. The battle lasted approximately 10 days. Cretan men, women and children fought with whatever they could use. The Battle of Crete was unprecedented in three respects: it was the first battle where German paratroops were used on a massive scale and a historical first airborne invasion. It was the first time invading Nazi troops encountered mass resistance from a civilian population. As a result of the heavy casualties suffered by the paratroopers, Hitler negated further large-scale airborne operations. However, the Allies, impressed by the potential of paratroopers, began to build their own airborne divisions. The enormous casualties and difficulty in taking Crete delayed Hitler’s plans of invading Russia, further crippling his troops during that winter and leading to their ultimate defeat. This Battle of Crete was recognized worldwide, which prompted praise from many, including Winston Churchill, who said “from here on out, we will not say that Greeks fight like heroes but that heroes fight like Greeks! May the great Cretans that fought in this legendary battle rest in peace and may their memory be always eternal!” Historic Visit In March, our group of 24 PAA members set out on the pilgrimage to Constantinople. The planned seven-day guided trip embarked with flights from New York and Chicago. Arriving in Istanbul, we were welcomed by a knowledgeable Armenian Greek tour guide who escorted us for the duration of our stay. Our hotel by Taksim Square offered amazing views of Istanbul, which claims a population of approximately 20 million – among

them just a few thousand Greeks! We visited sites I first learned of in Greek and Sunday school, such as Zoodochos Pigi, Panagia Blaxerna, Hagia Sofia, Saint George, the School of Halki and the Orthodox Ecumenical Patriarchate. The greatest blessing was meeting His All Holiness Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew. We had the honor and privilege for the last half of our trip of having with us the Archbishop of Crete His Holiness Irinaios, the Metropolitan of Rethymnon and Avlopotamou His Eminence Evgenios, and the very Reverend Father Makarios, representative of the Ecumenical Patriarchate to Crete. Words aren’t sufficient enough to thank them for taking the time to come from Crete and join the PAA pilgrimage! Coordinating on the PAA’s behalf from Crete was our PAA Representative and dear friend Ippokratis Beladakis; he is an amazing individual, and the PAA cannot thank him enough for his altruistic efforts. “Freedom of speech and freedom of religion” truly have a new meaning for me now! While out for dinner with the priests, we were asked to pray silently and avoid doing the sign of the cross publicly in an effort not to draw attention as Christianity isn’t welcomed! For that matter, when we entered Hagia Sophia, the iconic and historic church of our faith, we had to do our cross privately, otherwise the security guards would escort us out without warning. Although we said our prayers and carefully did the sign of the cross, it was made pretty clear to us we didn’t want to create problems for our religious leaders. The visit to the Patriarchate was scheduled for Saturday, the day before our departure. En route to the Patriarchate, it was disappointing to see the disrepair of former Orthodox neighborhoods, crumbling with once beautiful churches boarded up, intentionally disallowed to be repaired by the authorities in hopes they will collapse! Only a few blocks away, the Muslim neighborhoods are just the opposite. For our religious leaders it is an everyday battle and a sad way of life. As we walked into the Patriarchate, first we saw the church of St. George, which houses one of the continued on page 6

υτό το μήνα γιορτάζομε την 72η επέτειο της Μάχης της Κρήτης. Κατα τη διάρκεια του Β΄ Παγκοσμίου Πολέμου, το πρωί της 20ής Μαΐου 1941, οι Ναζί ξεκίνησαν επίθεση στην Κρήτη μέσω αέρος, με την ονομασία Επιχείρηση Μερκιουρι. Οι Έλληνες και οι συμμαχικές δυνάμεις, μαζί με τους κατοίκους του νησιού προέβαλλαν γενναία αντίσταση. Από τήν πρώτη κιόλας ημέρα της μάχης, οι Γερμανοί υπέστησαν μεγάλες απώλειες. Τα συμμαχικά στρατεύματα ήταν σίγουρα ότι θα επικρατούσαν ενάντια στη Γερμανική εισβολή. Ομως, την επόμενη μέρα, λόγω κακής επικοινωνίας, οι υπεύθυνοι υπεράσπισης τής Κρήτης δεν μπόρεσαν να αντιμετωπίσουν την κατάσταση, και το αεροδρόμιο Μάλεμε στη δυτική Κρήτη έπεσε στα χέρια των Γερμανών. Ετσι οι Γερμανικές δυνάμεις ειχαν την δυνατότητα συνεχούς ανεφοδιασμού και τελικά κατάφεραν να συντρίψουν τους συμμάχους. Η μάχη κράτησε περίπου δέκα ημέρες. Οι Κρητικοί, αντρες, γυναίκες και παιδιά πολέμησαν με ό, τι μπορούσαν. Η Μάχη της Κρήτης εμεινε πρωτοφανής στην ιστορία για τρεις λογους: ήταν η πρώτη μάχη όπου οι Γερμανοί χρησιμοποιήσαν αλεξιπτωτιστές σε μαζική κλίμακα και η πρώτη ιστορική εισβολή από αέρος. Επίσης ηταν η πρώτη φορά που τα στρατεύματα τών Ναζί αντιμετώπισαν τέτοια μεγάλη αντίσταση από άμαχο πληθυσμό. Οι βαριές απώλειες που υπέστησαν οι αλεξιπτωτιστές, ανάγκασαν το Χίτλερ να αναιρέσει τίς περαιτέρω μεγάλης κλίμακας επιθέσεις από αέρος. Ωστόσο, οι Σύμμαχοι εντυπωσιάστηκαν από τις δυνατότητες των αλεξιπτωτιστών και άρχισαν να ετοιμάζουν τα δικά τους αερομεταφερόμενα τμήματα. Οι τεράστιες απώλειες, η δυσκολία και η καθυστέρηση τής κατάληψης της Κρήτης υποχρέωσαν τον Χίτλερ να προχωρήσει στην εισβολή της Ρωσίας πολυ αργότερα απο οτι αρχικά υπολόγιζε, με αποτέλεσμα, τα στρατεύματά του να έρθουν αντιμέτωπα με τίς αντίξοες συνθήκες του χειμώνα, κατι που τελικά τον οδήγησε στην απόλυτη ήττα. Η γενναία αντίσταση τών αγωνιστών στήν Μάχη της Κρήτης αναγνωρίστηκε παγκοσμίως και σχολιάστηκε θετικά από πολλούς, όπως ο Ουίνστον Τσόρτσιλ, ο οποίος είπε ότι «από εδώ και στο εξής, δεν θα πούμε ότι οι Έλληνες πολεμούν σαν ήρωες, αλλά ότι οι ήρωες πολεμούν σαν Έλληνες!» Ας ειναι αιωνία η μνήμη τών γενναίων αυτών μαχητών! Τον περασμένο μήνα μία ομάδα απο 24 μέλη τής ΠΕΑ, πραγματοποιήσαμε Προσκύνημα στην Κωνσταντινούπολη. Το επταήμερο ταξίδι ξεκίνησε από τη Νέα Υόρκη και το Σικάγο. Φτάνοντας στην Κωνσταντινούπολη, μάς υποδέχτηκε ένας εξαιρετικά πεπειραμένος ξεναγός, Αρμένιος Ελληνικής καταγωγής, που μας συνόδευσε καθόλη τη διάρκεια της παραμονής μας. Το ξενοδοχείο μας, στην
πλατεία Ταξίμ, μάς προσέφερε καταπληκτική θέα στην περίπου είκοσι εκατομμύρια κατοίκους Κωνσταντινούπολη που ανάμεσά τους ειναι μόνο μερικές χιλιάδες Έλληνες! Επισκεφθήκαμε μέρη τα οποία ειχα ακουσει για πρώτη φορά στο Ελληνικό και Κατηχητικό σχολείο, όπως η Ζωοδόχος Πηγή, η Παναγία Βλαχερνα, η Αγία Σοφία, ο Άγιος Γεώργιος, η Σχολή της Χάλκης και το Οικουμενικό Ορθόδοξο Πατριαρχείο. Η μεγαλύτερη ευλογία για μάς ήταν η συνάντηση με τον Παναγιώτατο Οικουμενικό Πατριάρχη Βαρθολομαίο. Είχαμε την τιμή και χαρά για το τελευταίο μισό του ταξιδιού μας, να έχομε μαζί μας τον Αρχιεπίσκοπο Κρήτης Ειρηναίο, τον Μητροπολίτη Ρεθύμνου και Αυλοποτάμου Ευγένιο και τον Πατέρα Μακάριο, Εκπρόσωπο του Οικουμενικού Πατριαρχείου στην Κρήτη. Οι λέξεις δεν επαρκούν να τους ευχαριστήσω για τον χρόνο που αφιέρωσαν για να έρθουν από την Κρήτη και να μας συνοδεύσουν στο προσκύνημά μας! Ο εκπρόσωπος τής ΠΕΑ και αγαπητός φίλος Ιπποκράτης Μπελαδάκης ηταν ο υπεύθυνος συντονιστής τού ταξιδιού για τους συμμετέχοντας τής Κρήτης. Είναι ένα καταπληκτικό άτομο και η ΠΕΑ δεν μπορεί να τον ευχαριστήσει αρκετά για τήν ακουραστη και σπουδαία προσφορά του. «Η ελευθερία του λόγου και της θρησκείας» έχουν πραγματικά αποκτήσει ένα νέο νόημα για μένα τώρα! Οσο ειμαστε έξω για δείπνο με τους ιερείς, μας ζητήθηκε να προσευχόμαστε σιωπηλά και να αποφεύγομε να κάνομε το σημείο τού σταυρού μπροστά στο κόσμο, για να μην τραβήξομε την προσοχή κανενός, γιατί ο Χριστιανισμός δεν είναι αποδεκτός στην περιοχή! Για το λόγο αυτό, όταν μπήκαμε στήν Αγία Σοφία, η οποία ειναι το σύμβολο της πίστης μας, επρεπε να κάνομε το σταυρό μας κρυφά, αλλιώς οι φύλακες θα μας εβγαζαν εξω χωρίς προειδοποίηση. Φυσικά προσευχηθήκαμε και κάναμε προσεκτικά τον σταυρό μας γιατι οπως μας ειχαν προειδοποίησει δεν επρεπε και δεν θέλαμε να δημιουργήσομε προβλήματα στους θρησκευτικούς ηγέτες μας. Η επίσκεψη στο Πατριαρχείο είχε προγραμματιστεί για το Σάββατο μία ημέρα πριν από την αναχώρηση μας. Καθ ‘οδόν προς το Πατριαρχείο, ήταν απογοητευτική η εικόνα των ερειπομένων πρώην Ορθοδόξων περιοχών. Οι παλαιοτερα όμορφες εκκλησίες ειναι ετοιμες να καταρρεύσουν, αλλα η επισκευή τους δεν επιτρέπεται από τις αρχές, σκόπιμα, ωστε να καταστραφούν με τή πάροδο τού χρονου! Ενώ λίγα τετράγωνα μακριά οι μουσουλμανικές συνοικίες είναι ακριβώς το αντίθετο. Για τούς θρησκευτικούς ηγέτες μας, αυτό είναι μια καθημερινή continued on page 6

oldest icons in the city – that of Panagia holding Christ. On the other side of the church was a column, which has in it the nail that held the chains that Christ was chained to the day before His crucifixion! What a surreal experience to actually touch this! We lit our candles and said our prayers and proceeded to the Office of His All Holiness. We were guided to the Patriarchal Throne Room and asked to wait. In advance of our meeting, His All Holiness met with the Holy Fathers from Crete. They briefed him of the many PAA accomplishments and contributions in the United States, Greece and Crete. As our group waited their arrival, the room quietly filled with priests, bishops and metropolitans, including His Holiness of Crete Archbishop Irinaios and His Eminence of Rethymnon and Avlopotamou Metropolitan Evgenios. Last to join us was His All Holiness Patriarch Bartholomew. Unbeknownst to me why His All Holiness called my name and asked me to stand before him. It was a humbling moment as His All Holiness began to pray over me the investiture of Archon. I felt the power of the Holy Spirit from above. It is an honor for me and my family to be recognized; however, this honor I share with my PAA family—it’s all for you and because of you. His All Holiness was extremely pleased by our visit and blessed the PAA family, thanking us for our continued endeavors in support of the Holy Orthodox Mother Church in Constantinople, the U.S. and Crete. Thanks to Ippokratis Beladakis we offered gifts to the Patriarchate from our homeland Crete, which included “Apo to Topo Mas,” a custom made Cretan kouroupaki with the symbol of the Patriarchate in the middle; a bottle of Tsikoudia; a bottle of Cretan olive oil; and botany from our mountains. We also included the Holiday Edition of KPHTH magazine and the history of the PAA. My eternal gratitude to our spiritual leader, His All Holiness Patriarch Bartholomew for meeting with us. My sincere thanks to the Holy Fathers from Crete, His Holiness from America Archbishop Demetrios and His Eminence Metropolitan of Chicago Iakovos for their blessings and making this dream a reality. Also thank you to my wife Elena for keeping it all together and being by my side, to our representative in Crete Ippokratis Beladakis who worked tirelessly on the details, to our 2nd Vice President Stavros Antonakakis for doing all of the research and arranging several meetings with the Greek Consulate General and the Minority Leader, to our PYA representative Joseph Antonakakis who made us proud, and to all the PAA members and friends who attended this trip of a lifetime. In closing, allow me to remind you that the PAA National Convention is just around the corner. Please make sure to make your hotel reservations (the river views are already sold out!), purchase your packages and plan your trips. This will be a great convention, so don’t miss out! μάχη και ενας θλιβερός τρόπος ζωής. Καθώς περπατούσαμε στο Πατριαρχείο είδαμε για πρώτη φορά την εκκλησία του Αγίου Γεωργίου που έχει μία από τίς παλαιότερες εικονες της πόλης, την εικονα της Παναγίας που κρατάει τον Χριστό και από την άλλη πλευρά του ναού μια στήλη που έχει επάνω σε αυτήν το καρφί που κρατούσε τις αλυσίδες με τις οποιες ήταν αλυσοδεμένος ο Χριστός την ημέρα πριν από τη σταύρωσή Του! Τι συγκλονιστική εμπειρία να δει και να αγγίξει κανεις αυτό! Ανάψαμε τα κεριά μας, κάναμε την προσευχή μας και προχωρήσαμε για το Γραφείο του Πατριάρχη. Μας οδήγησαν στην Αίθουσα του Πατριαρχικού Θρόνου και μας ζήτησαν να περιμένομε. Πριν από τη συνάντησή μας με τον Παναγιώτατο, προηγήθηκε η συνάντησή του με τους Αγίους Πατέρες από την Κρήτη. Εκείνοι τον ενημέρωσαν για τα επιτεύγματα τής ΠΕΑ και τις εισφορές μας στις ΗΠΑ, την Ελλάδα και την Κρήτη. Καθώς περιμέναμε την άφιξη τού Πατριάρχου, η αιθουσα γέμισε με Επισκόπους, Ιερείς και Μητροπολίτες και μεταξύ αυτών, ο Αρχιεπίσκοπος Κρήτης Ειρηναίος και ο Σεβασμιώτατος Μητροπολίτης Ρεθύμνης και Αυλοποτάμου Ευγένιος. Τελευταίος κατεύθασε στην αιθουσα ο Παναγιώτατος Οικουμενικός Πατριάρχης Βαρθολομαίος. Χωρίς να ξέρω γιατί, ακουσα τον Παναγιώτατο να με καλεί με το όνομά μου και μου ζήτησε να σταθώ μπροστά Του. Ήταν για μενα μια συγκινητική στιγμή, καθως ο Παναγιώτατος άρχισε να προσεύχεται πάνω μου και να μου αποδίδει τον τίτλο του Άρχοντος, τοτε ένιωσα στα αλήθεια από πάνω τη δύναμη του Αγίου Πνεύματος. Η διάκριση αυτή είναι τιμή για μένα και την οικογένειά μου, ωστόσο, αυτή ειναι τιμή που την μοιράζομαι μαζι με ολους εσας, την οικογένεια που εχω αποκτήσει μεσω της Παγκρητικής, είναι για εσάς και εξαιτίας εσάς. Ο Παναγιώτατος, ήταν εξαιρετικά ικανοποιημένος από την επίσκεψή μας και ευλόγησε την PΕA ευχαριστώντας μας για τη συνεχή προσπάθεια μας, για την υποστήριξη της Ιεράς Ορθοδόξου Εκκλησίας της Κωνσταντινούπολης, τις ΗΠΑ και την Κρήτη. Χάρη στον Ιπποκράτη Μπελαδάκη προσφέραμε στο Πατριαρχείο δώρα από την πατρίδα μας την Κρήτη, τα οποία περιελάμβαναν “Από το Τόπο Μας” ένα χειροποίητο Κρητικό κουρουπάκη

PAA 300 Luncheon

he PAA 300 is excited to announce a special luncheon to be held at the PAA Convention in Akron, Ohio. The event will be on Thurs., July 4, at the hotel, and is going to be for all of the new members of the PAA 300. The luncheon will be an opportunity to thank those individuals and chapters that have made John Marakis a commitment to the PAA 300 and the funds that it jmarakis@gmail.com represents. At this event, the new members will re(586) 707-7279 ceive an item to thank them for their commitment to the PAA and for their support of the three endowment funds. The PAA 300 program has been set up to support the Philanthropic, Scholarship, and Culture and Education funds. With the success of the program, we will have an additional $1 million to put into each of these funds. I look forward to seeing you all at our convention in Akron, Ohio.

Greek Independence Day Parade
D
istrict 6 Cretan chapters were well-represented at the recent San Francisco Greek Independence Day and Cultural Parade on April 7. It was a busy day. It was a day chosen by the World Series Champion San Francisco Giants to hold a World Series Ring celebration at AT&T Park, attracting 41,000 fans. It was a day when President Obama had been visiting the San Francisco Bay Area. It was a day when hundreds of Greeks, Greek Effie Fourakis Americans and Americans, all Philhellenes, gatheffiejf@me.com ered to march in a parade to celebrate and showcase our beautiful Greek culture. Members of San Francisco’s Epimenides Chapter marched in the parade, led by their new president John Monolakis, his wife Demetra and their two children. John is the son of Steve and Toula Monolakis, long time members of Epimenides. The Icaros Chapter of San Jose, the Polirinia Chapter of Marin County and the Minoan Dancers, directed by Vasilis and Effie Fourakis (District 6 Lieutenant Governor and Secretary) joined forces to sponsor a parade float and rode in style along the parade route. The celebration continued after the parade with Greek music, dancing and food available on the square across from City Hall (see parade pictures on pages 28-29). District 6 members are looking forward to the biennial District 6 Conference to be held May 17-19 in Sacramento, Calif., hosted by the Zeus Cretagenis Chapter, and to the National PAA Convention in June. Θα χρωστάω αιώνια ευγνωμοσύνη στον πνευματικό ηγέτη μας, Παναγιώτατο Οικουμενικό Πατριάρχη Βαρθολομαίο για την συνάντηση που είχε μαζί μας. Ειλικρινείς ευχαριστίες προς τούς Άγιους Πατέρες από την Κρήτη, πρός την Αυτού Αγιότητα Αρχιεπίσκοπο Αμερικής Δημήτριο, και τον Σεβασμιώτατο Μητροπολίτη Σικά-γου Ιάκωβο για τις ευλογίες τους και που εκαναν αυτό το όνειρο πραγματικότητα. Επίσης, ευχαριστώ τη σύζυγό μου Έλενα για τη διοργάνωση του ταξιδιου μου αυτου και που ηταν στο πλευρό μου, τον εκπρόσωπο μας στην Κρήτη Ιπποκράτη Μπελαδακη που εργάστηκε ακούραστα για τις λεπτομέρειες, τον 2ο αντιπρόεδρο Σταύρο Αντωνακάκη πού εκανε όλη την έρευνα και κανόνισε συναντήσεις με τον Ελληνα Γενικό Προξενο και τον Αρχηγό της Μειοψηφίας, ευχαριστώ τον εκπρόσωπο της Παγκρητικής Νεολαίας Ιωσήφ Αντωνακάκη που μας έκανε υπερήφανους με την παρουσία του, καθώς και όλα τα μέλη της Παγκρητικής και τους φίλους που συμμετείχαν σ’αυτό το μοναδικό ταξίδι. Κλείνοντας, επιτρέψτε μου να σας υπενθυμίσω ότι το Συνέδριο τής Παγκρητικής πλησιάζει. Σας παρακαλώ φροντίστε να κάνετε εγκαίρως την κράτησή σας στο ξενοδοχείο (τα δωμάτια με θέα στο ποτάμι εχουν ήδη δωθει !) Αγοράσετε τα πακέτα σας, και προγραμματίσετε το ταξίδι σας. Candidate for the Office of President of the Pancretan Association of America
D
ear members, Article 1 of the Constitution of the Pancretan Association of America adapted in 1929 states: The Cretan Chapters in the United States and Canada unite in a confederation which will be hereafter known as the “Pancretan Association of America”. The fact that the PAA was formed by the clubs has always guided how I believe its president and officers should relate to the chapters and its members. The members of those clubs in 1929 felt an immense pride creating the PAA. As a national association, we have a greater force and the ability to combine resources beyond what any one chapter can do on its own. The creation of a PAA was, and still is, now the best way to bring together Cretans in the USA who are spread out across 3,000 miles. The PAA is an extension of the pride we feel to have originated from an island of people who were able to maintain our unique culture and traditions in the face of hundreds of years of oppression and numerous wars. The PAA has 84 years of great accomplishments thanks to you, the members of the PAA, and your families who devoted your time and financial resources to

make it successful. We have the best monthly magazine of any association; a vibrant youth; scholarships; cultural, educational and philanthropic programs; and many more accomplishments. If elected President, I will strive to have every action guided by the principle that the PAA exists to support and assist its chapters and to fulfill the purposes described in Article 2, to promote social relationships among the Cretans in the USA, to promote and develop education and scholarships and to support philanthropic projects here and in Crete. I have been an officer of the PAA Board almost continuously for over 30 years and I am proud to have served as Legal Advisor, Board member of the Pancretan Endowment Fund, General Supervisor, First Vice President and Chairman of two Conventions. I graduated from the University of California at Berkeley in 1973 and the University of the Pacific School of Law in 1977 and have been a lawyer since then in private practice. My father, Stavros Sargetis, who passed away in 1976, was from the village of Arevete, close to Vrisses, Apokorona. My mother Demetra (Tsourounakis) is from Galatas, Chania. My wife Vickie and I have two sons, George and Alexandros, who are both in college. I don’t want what it means to be from Crete to end with me. I want my sons and the next generations throughout our country to know and feel proud of our Association and Cretan heritage. The future of the PAA has always been in our youth, and we have the most dynamic youth in the history of the PAA. I thank our PAA President John Manos and the current Board for their excellent accomplishments during this past term. I accept the challenge, and if elected, I will strive with everything the PAA does, to make you feel proud to be a member, keeping in mind, always, that we exist to serve the good of the chapters and its members. Υποψήφιος για το αξίωμα του Προέδρου τής Παγκρητικής Ένωσης Αμερικής
A
γαπητά μέλη, Το αρθρο 1 του Καταστατικού τής Παγκρητικής το οποιο εγράφη το 1929 αναφέρει: Αι ανά τάς Ηνωμένας Πολιτείας και Καναδά οργανώσεις Κρητών ενούνται εις μίαν ομοσπονδία η οποία θα είναι γνωστή υπό το όνομα « Παγκρητική Ένωσις εν Αμερική». Τό γεγονός οτι η ΠΕΑ δημιουργήθηκε απο τούς συλλόγους ηταν και ο κώδικας συνεργασίας του προέδρου τής Παγκρητικής και του εκάστοτε συμβουλίου με τους συλλόγους. Η υπερηφάνεια τών μελών αυτών γιά την επιτυχία τού στόχου τους με τήν δημιουργία τής Παγκρητικής ηταν τεράστια. Σαν εθνική οργάνωση εχομε αναμφισβήτητα πολυ μεγαλύτερη δύναμη και ικανότητα για να ενώσομε τίς προσπάθειές μας και να εχομε καλύτερα και περισσότερα αποτελέσματα απο ότι ο καθε σύλλογος μόνος του. Η δημιουργία τής ΠΕΑ ήταν και εξακολουθεί να είναι και σήμερα ο καλύτερος τρόπος για να έρχοντε σε επαφή οι διάσπαρτοι σε 3,000 μίλια Κρήτες στις ΗΠΑ. Η ΠΕΑ είναι η επέκταση της υπερηφάνειας που αισθανόμαστε για τήν καταγωγή μας, για τους ανθρώπους που κατάφεραν να διατηρήσουν το μοναδικό πολιτισμό και τις παραδόσεις μας παρόλο που ειχαν να αντιμετωπίσουν εκατοντάδες χρόνια καταπίεσης και πολυάριθμους πολέμους. Εχει μια ιστορία 84 χρόνων με μεγάλα επιτεύγματα χάρη σε σάς τα μέλη τής ΠΕΑ και τις οικογένειές σας που αφιέρωσατε το χρόνο σας και βοηθήσατε οικονομικά για να κρατήσει και να διαπρέψει μέχρι σημερα. Έχομε το καλύτερο μηνιαίο περιοδικό απο κάθε αλλη οργάνωση, εχομε δυναμική νεολαία, προσφέρομε υποτροφίες, εχομε πολιτιστικά, εκπαιδευτικά και φιλανθρωπικά προγράμματα, αλλά και πολλά άλλα επιτεύγματα. Εάν εκλεγώ Πρόεδρος, θα προσπαθήσω κάθε μου ενέργεια να καθοδηγείται από την βασική αρχή ότι η ΠΕΑ υπάρχει για να στηρίζει και να βοηθά τούς συλλόγους της και να εκπληρώνει τους στόχους που αναφέροντε στο άρθρο 2 για την προώθηση των κοινωνικών σχέσεων μεταξύ των Κρητικών στις ΗΠΑ, για την προώθηση και την ανάπτυξη της εκπαίδευσης,

των υποτροφιών καθώς και για την υποστήριξη φιλανθρωπικών έργων εδώ και στην Κρήτη. Μέχρι τώρα έχω υπηρετήσει στο Διοικητικό Συμβούλιο τής PΕA σχεδόν συνέχεια για πάνω από 30 χρόνια και είμαι υπερήφανος που υπηρέτησα ως Νομικός Σύμβουλος, μέλος του συμβουλίου για το Παγκρήτιο Κληροδότημα, Γενικός Επόπτης, πρώτος Αντιπρόεδρος καθώς επίσης και Πρόεδρος Εργασιών σε δύο Εθνικά Συνέδρια. Αποφοίτησα από το Πανεπιστήμιο της Καλιφόρνια στο Δεν θέλω το τι σημαίνει να εχει Μπέρκλεϊ, το 1973 και το Πανεπιστήμιο of κανείς Κρητική καταγωγή να the Pacific School of τελειώσει με μένα. Θέλω οι γιοί Law το 1977. Από τότε μου αλλά και όλες οι επόμενες εξασκώ το επάγγελμα του γενιές να γνωρίζουν και να δικηγόρου και εχω δικό αισθάνοντε υπερηφάνεια για την μου γραφείο. Ο πατέρας οργάνωσή μας και την Κρητική μου, ο Σταύρος Σαρτζέτης, μας κληρονομιάς. ο οποίος απεβίωσε το 1976, ήταν από το χωριό Αραβήτη, κοντά στις Βρύσες Αποκορώνου. Η μητέρα μου Δήμητρα (Τσουρουνάκης) είναι από το Γαλατά Χανίων. Η γυναίκα μου Βίκυ και εγώ έχομε δύο γιους, το Γεώργιο και τον Αλέξανδρο, και πηγαίνουν και οι δύο στο κολέγιο. Δεν θέλω το τι σημαίνει να εχει κανείς Κρητική καταγωγή να τελειώσει με μένα. Θέλω οι γιοί μου αλλά και όλες οι επόμενες γενιές να γνωρίζουν και να αισθάνοντε υπερηφάνεια για την οργάνωσή μας και την Κρητική μας κληρονομιάς. Το μέλλον τής ΠΕΑ θά ειναι πάντα οι νέοι μας και αυτη την περίοδο έχουμε την πιο δυναμική Νεολαία στην ιστορία τής ΠΕΑ. Ευχαριστώ τον πρόεδρο τής ΠΕΑ Γιάννη Μάνο και το σημερινό Διοικητικό Συμβούλιο για τά εξαιρετικά επιτεύγματά τους την τελευταία διετία. Δέχομαι την πρόκληση για την προεδρία και αν εκλεγώ, θα προσπαθήσω με όλα οσα κάνει η ΠΕΑ, να αισθανεστε περήφανοι που εισαστε μέλης της εθνικής μας οργάνωση, καί θά έχω παντα στο μυαλό οτι υπάρχομε για να εξυπηρετούμε το καλό των συλλόγων και των μελών μας. Δ
έν έκανε πολύ νά βγάλουμε τά εισιτήρια γιά τήν πρώην Βασιλεύουσα, μεγαλούπολη Κωνσταντινούπουλη. Τό ιερό προσκύνημα ήθελα νά τό κάνω πρίν από 30 χρόνια. Κάθε φορά πού μού ερχόταν ή σκέψη, θυμόμουνα τά φρικτά δεινά πού υπέφεραν οί δικοί μας πρόγονοι καί ή απόφασις ήτανε αποκλειστικά όχι. Τοιουτοτρόπως αυτή τήν φορά αστραπιέα αποφάσισα πώς τά χρόνια περνούν ταχύτατα καί δέν έχουμε άλλο χρόνο νά περιμένουμε. Τό πρόγραμμα τής επίσκεψης περιείχε τό Οικομενικό Πατριαρχείο, τόν Καθεδρικό ναό τού Αγίου Γεωργίου, Αγία Σοφία, την Παναγία των Βλαχερνών όπου γιά πρώτη φορά εψάλει το τροπάριο «τή υπερμάχω στρατηγώ τά νικητήρια....», στό Τοπκαρί παλάτι όπου βρίσκονται τα λείψανα του Αγίου Ιωάννη τού Βαπτιστή, τό Μπαλουκλύ μοναστήρι της Ζωοδόχου Πηγής και τόν οίκο τών ηλικιωμένων, κοινώς Ελληνικό γηροκομείον, τίς υπόγειες δεξάμενες τής πόλης, τήν εκκλησία τών Αγίων Σωτήρων, σύντομη κρουαζέρα στόν Βόσπορο στά Πριγκιπόνησσα, επίσκεψη στό νησί τής Ιεράς Θεολογικής σχολής τού Χριστιανισμού Χάλκης. Επίσης επίσκεψη στόν εσώκλειστο παζάρι όπου πουλούν όλα τά αρωματικά μπαχαρικά τού κόσμου. Επίσκεψη στήν 12

Ή μετακίνησις μας από τό αεροδρόμιον στό ξενοδοχείον μας έδωσε καταπληκτική εικόνα. Ή περιοχή τού ξενοδοχείου ήτανε ωραία, οί δρόμοι στενοί και καθαροί. Δέν πέρασε πολύ ώρα νά καταλάβουμε από τήν επαφή μας μέ τό προσωπικό τού ξενοδοχείου πώς ή εξυπηρέτησις του προσωπικού ήτανε άψογη. Ή οργάνωση τών τουριστικών ταξιδίων στήν πόλη, ή αξιοποίησις στόν τουριστικόν τομέα, ή προβολή και ή εκμετάλευσις τού τουριστικού προιόντος από τήν Τουρκία είναι αξιοζήλευτη. ● Παλάτι Ντολμάμπακσε Μιά από τίς πρώτες επισκέψεις μας ήτανε στό παλάτι τού σουλτάνου. Κτισμένο στά νερά τού Βοσπόρου μέ ωραία θέα καί ωραία κατασκευή ήτανε υπερβολικό σέ χώρους καί πλούτο. Ή ομάδα μας μέ τήν βοήθεια τού ξεναγού τό είδε καί τό θαύμασε. Οί ουρές γίνοντε μεγάλες άν πάς λαθασμένη ώρα. Ό ξεναγός είναι απαραίτητος γιατί τό οικοδόμημα είναι σάν τό λαβύρινθο καί έχει πολλούς περιορισμούς. Τό οικοδόμημα από τήν εξωτερική θέα

● Αγία Σοφία Στό αντίκρυσμα τού φημισμένου μεγαλοπρεπέστατου ναού τής Αγίας Σοφίας ένοιωσα μιά βαθειά ανατρυχίλα νά κυματίζει στό σώμα μου καί ένα κρυφό δάκρυ νά τρέχει από τά μάτια μου. Τό θαύμα τής αρχιτεκτονικής καί τής ανθρώπινης σοφίας καθρεπτίζεται σέ αυτό τό θαυματούργημα. Στέκεσαι στό κέντρο καί νοιώθεις συναισθήματα κατάνυξης. Από λεγόμενες πληροφορίες έμαθα πράγματα πού δέν γνώριζα. Ό αρχαίος ναός θαύμα, τό θαύμα τής εποχής εκείνης ακόμη στέκεται όρθιος αγέροχος, παρόλο πού ή περιοχή είναι σεισμόπληκτος, ένας τών πολλών σεισμών ήτανε 7.5 της κλίμακας ρίχτερ. Όλα τά κτίρια κατέρευσαν εκτός τό θεόρατο οικοδόμημα τού μεγάλου Ιουστινιανού. Ή αρχική ονομασία τής πόλης ήτανε Βυζάντιο από τό ιδρυτή της τό βασιλιά Βύζα από τά Μέγαρα τής Αττικής. Ούτος έκτεισε τήν πόλη κατά τόν 4ον αιώνα π. Χ.. Ή πόλης μετονομάστηκε σέ Κωνσταντινούπολη 800 χρόνια αργότερα από τόν αυτοκράτωρα Κωνσταντίνο. Ή Αγία Σοφία εκτίστηκε από τόν Ιουστινιανόν τό 360 μ.χ.. Εκτίστηκε από δυό αρχιτέκτονες τόν Ισίδωρο τής Μιλίτου καί τόν Ανθαίμειον από τίς Τράλλες σέ ρυθμό βασιλικό. Ή πολύπλοκη αρχιτεκτονική, καί ή μεγαλιότητα του είχαν σκοπό νά αναδείξει τήν πόλη σάν τήν μεγαλόπρεπη πρωτεύουσα τής οικουμένης καί τό έκανε. Ή αρχιτεκτονική ήτανε σέ τέτοιο βαθμό πού προσπάθησε νά ενώσει τό κοσμικό στοιχείο μέ τό πνευματικό τής ορθοδοξίας. Η άγια Σοφία διατηρήθηκε ή μεγαλύτερη στόν κόσμο μέχρι πού κτίστηκε ό Αγιος Πέτρος στό Βατικανό. Είδαμε τό κατασκεύασμα τής Αγίας Σοφίας καί από μέσα, αλλά κ’ απέξω. Όταν βλέπαμε τό μεγαλείο τού ναού στό εσωτερικό τού ναού καί ατενίζοντας τίς εικονογραφίες αισθανόμαστε ότι ό τρούλος είναι κρεμμασμένος από τόν ουρανόν σέ μιά χρυσή αλλυσίδα καί ότι ό προσκυνητής σκέκεται υπό τήν σκέπη τού παντοδύναμου θεού. Τό κόστος τού ναού σύμφωνα μέ τίς πληροφορίες πού πήραμε έφθασε τό ένα τρισεκατομύρια δολλάρια, τό ακριβότερο κτίριον στόν κόσμο καί απίστευτο κόστος γιά τήν εποχή εκείνη. Το θαύμα του είναι ή καλιτεχνική του αξία κ’επιβίωσης του γιά τόσα χρόνια σέ μιά σεισμόπληκτη περιοχή. Κάθε μέρα προγραμματίζαμε δύο τοπία στίς εκδρομές μας καί σχεδόν κάθε μέρα περνούσαμε μία από τίς τρείς γέφυρες πού ενώνουν σήμερα τάς δύο ηπείρους Ασία, Ευρώπη. ● Ιερό Προσκύνημα στό Οικουμενικό Πατριαρχείον Απολαυστική ήταν ή επίσκεψη μας στό Οικουμενικό Πατριαρχείον τών Ορθοδόξων Χριστιανών. Ιερό ήταν τό προσκύνημα μας στόν ιερό ναόν τού Αγίου Γεωργίου τού Πατριαρχείου. Κάναμε μιά μετάνοια στό ιερό πανάρχαιο Ελληνικό χώμα του καί ευλαβικά βαδίσαμε πρός τόν αθάνατον ναόν τού Αγίου Γεωργίου. Θαυμάσαμε τήν απλότητα καί μεγαλοπρέπεια τού ναού. Ένα προσκύνημα, μιά απλή προσευχή, καί ή επιθυμία μας νά ανάψουμε 2-3 κεράκια μάς ανέβασε στούς επτά ουρανούς. Τόσο ό Αγιος Γιώργης, όσο καί όλοι οί

φαίνεται Ελληνικής αρχιτεκτονικής μέ όλη τήν μεγαλοπρέπεια τών Κορινθιακών ρυθμού κολόνων καί άλλων μαρμάρινων διακοσμήσεων. Στό εσωτερικό, παρ’όλο πού τό κτίριον είναι φτιαγμένο μέ ξύλα, τά ξύλα δέν φαίνονται πουθενά γιατί τά πάντα είναι καλυμμένα από σουβάδες, μαρμαρόσκονη καί επίχρυσα καλύμματα. Ή ομορφιά ατενίζοντας τόν Βόσπορον μάς έδινε δέος.

αλλοι ναοί τής πόλης από κάθε άποψη είναι τόσο ιδιαίτεροι, ειδικοί, καί μοναδικοί σέ τέχνη καί ιστορία σέ όλο τόν κόσμο καί στήν πόλη. Ίσως λόγω τής λαμπρής ιστορίας τής πόλης ασκούν μεγάλη έλξη πάνω μας (Δείτε τίς πολλαπλές φωτογραφίες πού βγάλαμε). Ώς είναι γνωστό ή κεντρική είσοδος στό Πατριαρχείο είναι ακόμη μανταλομένη είς τιμήν τού πατριάρχου Γρηγορίου τού πέμπτου τόν οποίον οί πολιτισμένοι Οθωμανοί κρέμασαν καί τόν αφήσανε επί τρείς μέρες νά αιωρείται, πρίν τόν βολοσύρουν μέ άμαξα 40 χιλιόμετρα γιά νά δείξουν τό έγκλημα τους στό πλήθος. Εντός τού Πατριαρχείου νοιώθεις πνευματική ανάσα, καί πνεύμα πνευματικής γαλήνης, περπατώντας στό καντιρίμι ενώ στό έξω μέρος στήνεται σχεδόν λαική αγορά, μέ κάθε λογής θρησκευτικού καί μή εμπορίου. Στό κτίριο τού Πατριαρχείου είδαμε καί φωτογραφίσαμε τό αιωνόβιο σύμβολο του Πατριαρχείου καί τής Βυζαντινής αυτοκρατορίας, τό δικέφαλο αετό. Πληροφορηθήκαμε ότι τό Ορθόδοξο Πατριαρχείον μας γνώρισε καί άλλες πολλές έδρες πρίν έλθει στό χώρο πού είναι σήμερα. Ή εγκατάστασις του στό Φανάρι έγινε τό 1600 μ.χ. σέ χώρο πού μάλλον ήτανε γυναικείο μοναστήρι. Το 1720 ανεγέρθη ναός μέ τρούλο ό οποίος έπεσε σχεδόν αμέσως μετά τήν κατασκευή του. Έτσι ό ναός ξανακτίστηκε στήν σημερινή βασιλική μορφή του. Σέ αυτό τόν μοναδικό ναόν νοιώθεις σάν νά συναντόνται τά επίγεια μέ τά επουράνεια πνεύματα, οί επίγειες σκέψεις μέ τίς πνευματικές προσεγγίσεις. Θεία φαίνεται νά είτανε η έμπνευσης τών ανθρώπων πού επινόησαν τήν κατασκευή καί αρχιτεκτονική. Tό εικονοστάσιο τού ναού είναι ωραιότατο, ένας τέλειος συνδιασμός μεταξύ χρυσοκαπνισμένων αγγειοπλαστικών καί ξύλου. Στά δεξιά τού ναού παραμένει αυτοκρατορικός, ό αιωνόβιος Πατριαρχικός Θρόνος. Πάνω από τό εικονοστάσι ή παραβολική σκεπή επιτρέπει στά παράθυρα τού ιερού νά βάζουν μέσα τό διάχυτο φώς τού ήλιου, καί νά φωτίζουν τό εσωτερικό τού ναού καί τό χρυσοκαλυμένο εικονοστάσι. Ολη ή παρέα μας ένοιωσε τό δέος, καί τήν κατάνυξη τού ναού. Τό μέν βόρειο μέρος τού ναού είναι αφιερωμένο στούς Τρείς Ιεράρχες, τών οποίων τά λείψανα παραμένουν στόν δεξιό τείχον. Τό δέ νότιον είναι αφιερωμένο στήν Παναγία τήν Παπαμακάριστον. Καί τούτο ώς ευλάβεια γιά τό ότι τό Πατριαρχείον είχε στεγασθεί γιά κάποιο διάστημα στόν ναόν της Παναγίας Παπαμακάριστον, στήν σημερινή συνοικία τού FATIH. ‘Η θαυματουργή εικόνα της μετεφέρθει καί ευρίσκεται εντός τού ναού. Ή κυρία
είσοδος τού εικονοστασίου είναι αριστοκρατική. Εκτός από τό τιμαφλή χρυσό, κοσμείται από σύμβολα σταυρών καί τόν δικέφαλον αετόν. Τό κέντρον τής εκκλησίας μεταξύ τού εικονοστασίου καί τών πολυελαίων φαίνεται πανοραμικό, διάχυτο τό φώς από τούς φεγγίτες, καί οφθαλμοφανής ή Φαναριώτικη θεοπρέπεια. Όλη ή παρέα τών πιστών άναψε τά κεράκια της καί έκανε τήν προσευχή της ευλαβικά. Όλοι μας θαυμάσαμε καί απολαύσαμε τό σεμνό πατριαρχικό ναόν τού Αγίου Γεωργίου. Μέσα σ’αυτόν τόν ιερόν χώρον νοιώσαμε θεοσέβεια καί γαλήνη μέσα μας. Δόξα νάχει ό παντοδύναμος πού μας αξίωσε νά κάνουμε αυτό τό σεβαστό προσκύνημα, στόν πιό ιστορικό τόπο τής Ελληνικής ύπαρξης- σέ μιά ακόμη χαμένη πατρίδα τών Ελλήνων. Βγαίνοντας έξω πήραμε μιά βαθειά ανάσα, κατεβαίνοντας από τήν πνευματική άνοδον μας, στήν επίγεια πραγματικότητα, νοιώθοντας τό γλυκό ανοιξιάτικο αεράκι τής κάποτε βασιλεύουσας πόλης βαθειά στά σωθικά μας. Ή χαρά μας είτανε ακόμη ζωγραφισμένη στά πρόσωπα μας. Είτανε χαρμόσυνο τό γεγονός ότι είχαμε τήν ευκαιρία έστω καί μιά φορά στήν ζωή μας νά δούμε καί νά προσκυνήσουμε τούς ιερείς πανάρχαιους Ελληνικούς ναούς οί οποίοι παραμένουν σκλαβωμένοι. Κατά τήν διάρκεια τής επίσκεψης μας ό Πατριάρχης μας Παναγιώτατος Βαρθολομαίος είχε αφήσει χρόνο νά μάς δεί καί νά μάς δώσει τήν ευλογία του. Αυτό πού δέν γνωρίζαμε καί μάς έγινε έκπληξις τήν τελευταία στιγμή, όταν είδαμε νά είναι μαζύ μας οί αρχιεπίσκοπος Κρήτης Ειρηναίος, ό θεοφιλέστατος Ευγένειος καί ό Ιπποκράτης αντιπρόσωπος ΠΕΑ εν Κρητη, όλοι νεοφερμένοι από τήν Κρήτη. Μάθαμε ότι ό πατριάρχης θά μάς εκπλήξει. Όταν βρεθήκαμε στό χώρον υποδοχής είδαμε τόν Παναγιώτατο νά φοράει τά ιερά άμφεια καί νά κάνει λειτουργική δέηση καί νά απευθύνει εγκώμια στόν άξιον πρόεδρον τής ΠΕΑ Ιωάννη Μάνον. Ούτος εχειροτονίθει στό αξίωμα τού «ΑΡΧΟΝΤΑ» τού Οικομενικού Πατριαρχείου. Πάντα Aξιος, αξιότιμε Κ. Πρόεδρε! Γιά μάς τούς Παγκρήτες τής Αμερικής ήτανε τιμή μας νά ανάψουμε τά κεράκια μας όπου πηγαμε, να προσκυνήσουμε τίς παμπάλαιες εικόνες, νά κάτσουμε στά στασίδια πού κάθησαν άρχοντες, αυτοκράτορες καί πατριάρχες καί νά ακούσουμε τόν ακάθιστον ύμνον πού επίσης ψάλθηκε τόν καιρό τής άλωσης. Νόμιζω όλοι μας πού πήγαμε σέ αυτό τό ιερό προσκύνημα, είδαμε τά μνημεία πού άφησαν πίσω οί Έλληνες, καί νά λάβουμε υπό όψιν μας ότι πρίν τό 1955 πού οί αθώοι Τούρκοι δημιούργησαν τά ξακουστά Δεκεμβριανά ό αριθμός τών Ελλήνων στήν πόλη ήτανε πάνω από 200,000 καί σήμερα παραμένουν εκεί μετά δυσκολίας 1000 με 2000. Χρειάζοντε τήν ηθική μας συμπαράσταση αφού έχουν αναλάβει τήν ευθύνη τής συντήρησις ναών κάτω από ανύπαρκτες συνθήκες. Έπρεπε νά βλέπατε τήν χαρά πού δώσαμε στό Ελληνικό γηροκομείον. Αυτοί οί άνθρωποι δέν έχουν κανένα δικό, κανένα συγγενή στό πάνω κόσμο, τούς χάσανε όλους. Ενοιωσα πώς χρειάζοντε τό κουράγιο μας καί τήν φιλία μας τά πιό μονάκριβα δώρα. Περπατώντας ώρες πολλές στά σοκάκια τής πόλης, ό επισκέπτης αισθάνεται αγαλίαση, καί απόλαυση.

Τά βαριά αισθήματα γιά μάς τούς Έλληνες καί οί ιστορικές σκέψεις πού διαπέρασαν τό μυαλό μας ήτανε είδος ονειροπολίας πού ισοδυναμούν μέ είδος θεραπείας, αφήνοντας πίσω τό έριγμα τού μίσους πού κουβαλούσε ό καθένας μας γιά τά βάρβαρα εγκλήματα πού οί Τούρκοι διέπραξαν στούς δικούς μας. Μία άλλη συγκινητική επίσκεψη ήτανε στήν Παναγία τών Βλαχερνών. Εκεί μέ δάκρυ στά μάτια μας ψάλαμε το « Υπέρ μάχω Στρατηγώ τά νικητήρια ώς λυτροθείσα τών δεινών......» Επίσης πήραμε από τόν αγιασμό της, βοήθεια όλων μας καί τής ΠΕΑ. Σέ γενικές γραμμές, στήν διάβα μας όπου πατήσαμε πόδι είδαμε κτίρια Ελληνικά
πού αποδεικνύουν τό μεγαλείο τής αρχιτεκτονικής καλαισθησίας καί Ελληνικού πολιτισμού τής πόλης. Είδαμε τήν ομορφιά καί μαγεία τής πόλης διαχρονικά στά βάθη τών αιώνων. Στήν προκυμαία υπάρχει ένα από τά ποιό ωραία εστιατώρεια νά απολαύσει κανείς τόν καφέ ή τό τσάι. Ή μαγευτική θέα σέ θέλγει καί σέ υπνοτίζει μέ τό Βοσπορινό αεράκι νά χαιδεύει τό πρόσωπο σου. Τό τοπείο είναι ένα ακόμη συναίσθημα πού κάνει τήν πόλη νά μπαίνει βαθύτερα στήν καρδιά σου. Όπου πήγαμε, όπου πατήσαμε τό πόδι μας οί ώρες πέρασαν αστραπιαία. Αυτό σημαίνει πόσο εύκολα μάς είχε αποροφήσει ή πόλης μέσα της. Τό ατένισμα τής Αγίας Σοφίας έστω καί από μακριά μας συγκλόνιζε, μάς μάγευε, μάς μαγνήτιζε κάθε φορά πού τήν θωρούσαμε. Θά είθελα νά ευχαριστήσω όλους τούς φίλους, μέλη τής ΠΕΑ, καί τό νέον άρχοντα της- τό πρόεδρον της. Μέ τήν όμορφη παρέα, τό φιλότιμο, καί καλαμπούρι όλων αυτών, ή επίσκεψις στήν πόλη μας ήτανε αξέχαστη, ή καλύτερη πού είχαμε ποτέ στήν ζωή μας, ή δέ φιλία μεταξύ μας, θά βαστήξει γιά πάντα. K

continue to press for its re-opening as an independent Orthodox educational institution. Halki is the Patriarchal flagship school that remains emblematic of religious freedom in Turkey. Prior to leaving the island of Halki, we met Nikiforo Metaxas and Vasiliki Papageorgiou, two musical composers who moved from Greece to Turkey. Their work includes the restoration of a former Greek high school building in town through their NGO “Bosphorus Cultural Alliance.” We toured the construction site of “Heybeliada International Sound Centre,” which will house a state-ofthe-art research, education and artistic production centre focusing on the musical traditions of the Mediterranean. On Thurs., March 21, we visited the Church of Holy Wisdom Hagia Sophia, the eighth wonder of the ancient world. It is an architectural and spiritual masterpiece that served as a Cathedral of the Ecumenical Patriarchate for nearly 1,000 years. Built by Emperor Justinian in 537, Hagia Sophia was the largest building in the world, predating St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome by some 1,000 years. The hierarchs, St. John Chrysostom and St. Gregory of Nazianzus, occupied the throne and preached in this magnificent church. It was an amazing feeling to stand on the hallowed ground where ecumenical councils took place, theology was formulated and Byzantine music and art were perfected. Our guide told us when King Vladimir of Russia sent envoys to determine the faith of Russia, they reported to him that when they entered Hagia Sophia they didn’t know whether they we were in heaven or on earth as they

beheld the splendor. Its immense center dome rises 182 feet above the ground with a diameter span of 103 feet. In 1453, the Church was converted into a mosque. Since 1935 it has been a museum. Sadly, last month Turkish courts approved a move to restore it back into a mosque. We concluded our journey on Sat., March 23, with the visit to the Greek Orthodox Ecumenical Patriarchate. During the Byzantine era, the Ecumenical Patriarchate was a much larger compound adjacent to Hagia Sophia. After the fall of Constantinople, it was forced to confine itself to its current minimal space to continue its existence. In 1941, the Patriarchate Compound was burned down in a devastating fire and had to be rebuilt. The Patriarchate Compound is comprised of the Cathedral of St. George, the Patriarchal Throne Room, The Holy Synod Chamber, the Residence and Offices of His All Holiness Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew, the Patriarchal Library and administrative offices. The main entrance of the Patriarchate has remained sealed since April 1821, in memory of Ecumenical Patriarch Gregory V who was hung for his role in the Greek Revolution. In the Cathedral of St. George, we saw the column of Christ’s flogging and also venerated the Holy Relics of the two most profound saints in all of Christendom, Saint Gregory the Theologian and Saint John Chrysostom. The greatest moment of our pilgrimage was meeting His All Holiness Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew, the leader of all Orthodoxy. His All Holiness is a bold, yet humble person. He speaks seven languages and he is an individual of profound intellect. His dynamic personality is warm, humble, loving and considerate with a Christ-like countenance. The visit with His All Holiness included a very rare event: PAA President Manos received the investiture of Archon Eftaxios—an honor reserved for individuals with outstanding service to the Orthodox Church. This honor extended by the Ecumenical Patriarchate carries with it a deep commitment and sincere dedication. It is an honor of obligation bestowed upon individuals of proven Orthodox Christian character, who conform faithfully to the teachings of Christ. AXIOS! His All Holiness bestowed his blessings along with those of the Ecclesiastical Hierarchs His Holiness Archbishop of Crete Irinaios and Metropolitan of Rethymno and Avlopotamou His Eminence Evgenios to all the PAA. ...an Influence in the Demise of the Nazi Empire MICHAEL SOFIANOS Jr.*
C
rete, the largest island in Greece, was viewed as an asset to the Nazi empire in their plan to conquer Europe and expand outward. But first, the Axis powers had to thoroughly move through Greece and secure the country’s ports to gain a secure naval position surrounding Crete. The Nazis used Greece as a chess piece in their naval army, but they also used the airstrips in Greece to fly the short distance to Crete. With these favorable military conditions, the Nazis believed their mission to capture Crete, called Operation Mercury, would only take a single day. To their surprise, they met fierce resistance when parachuting into Crete, and it took them 11 days to fully capture the island. The obstacles the Germans faced when trying to fully control Crete and mainland Greece influenced the demise of the Nazi empire. THE BATTLE On May 20, 1941, the Nazis carried out the largest aerial attack on Crete via Junkers Ju 52’s. These airplanes were used to transport paratroopers over the island for battle. A recollection of the events that occurred on that day was told in the documentary, “The 11th Day.” The Cretan civilians reported that the heart of fellow Cretans was unmatched, which led to a successful first day in safeguarding their homeland. Hitler originally had planned on taking over Crete in one day. One of his many goals was to capture the island’s airstrips. This plan failed, and, as a result, the Germans could not land aircraft filled with resources

on the island, which made the Germans incapable of replenishing their weapons and properly preparing for the ensuing battles on their desired island. The Germans viewed Crete as an ideal aerial and naval threat to surrounding nations in every direction. They also believed the island was a good holding place for resources and viewed Crete as the perfect outpost to help support their presence in captured nations and aid them with the possible capture of other countries or territories. The Germans believed if they could successfully capture the island, they would be able to fully control the central to eastern Mediterranean Sea. In fact, it took the Nazis 11 days to fully capture the island’s major cities — Chania, Heraklion and Rethymnon — and airstrips. The first three days of battle caused many casualties to the Nazis’ parachuting regime. The only way to successfully take control of the island was through an aerial attack that included thousands of paratroopers and hundreds of planes. An attack by water would not have proved successful due to the rocks surrounding the island and the fact that boats could be easily seen, unlike planes. Once the island was fully captured by the Germans, there were still outroars from the Cretan civilians, and maintaining full control was utterly impossible. The spirit, courage and determination that the Cretans displayed placed a great disadvantage on the Germans’ aim to control Crete. AMERICAN INTERVENTION In 1943, after two years of control by the Nazis, the Americans stepped in and aided the Cretans in their ongoing rebellion with the Nazis. The Americans planned on dropping food, guns and ammunition to the Cretans on the mountain of Psiloritis. The Cretans marked the location of the drop by making fires on top of the mountain. With help from the Americans, and even English soldiers, the Cretans kept the Germans on their heels. In September 1943, the Cretan resistance, now armed with weapons, had planned on capturing a Nazi general, named Muller, to show their determination in taking over Crete for the natives. Unexpectedly, General Muller was replaced with General Kreipe, who then became the target of the Cretan resistance. Cretan men went out to spy on the German general in the plains outside of his outpost and recorded the everyday movements General Kreipe made. Two Cretan spies were also able to acquire Nazi uniforms, and one night they “patrolled” the road that Kreipe was taking to his headquarters and stopped him in his car. These two men, along with other resistance fighters waiting in the dark, overtook the car and seized the general with ease. The Cretans treated the general with respect and did not torture him. After two weeks, the Cretans sent General Kreipe to a British headquarters in Cairo via boat. The act of taking the general hostage was a huge threat to the German army on Crete, and it also put a sense of fear in the Germans in regards to the Cretan resistance. In conclusion, the Nazi empire expected an easy capture of Greece and the island of Crete but instead suffered a substantial number of casualties and used a great number of resources. The Nazis were faced with a task, to capture Crete, but lost thousands of their men and gave the Allies a sense of hope due to their casualties. The largest airborne attack that the Nazis planned eventually led them to securing the largest Greek island, but “If there had not been the virtue they lost important resources such and courage of the Greeks, we as food, guns, ammunition and do not know what the outcome of World War II would have been.” men, who were supposed to help invade the USSR and capture that —Winston Churchill nation. The loss of men was just the first of many mistakes that the Nazis encountered. The battle of Crete
used guerilla warfare to kill thousands of Germans and impacted their operations on Crete. During the day, the Cretans would reside in mountainside caves and wait for night to fall. Once the moon rose, the Cretans would plant mines outside of the Germans’ camp and wait to open fire. These small attacks led to larger implications that would affect the Germans. The Germans lost resources, like ammunition, in retaliation to the attacks, and many of their men perished. After opening fire, the Cretans would sprint back to their caves. The consistency of the guerilla attacks on the Germans put them on the defensive when inhabiting Crete, and thoroughly controlling the island was difficult. The Germans stationed in Crete never had a peace of mind due to the constant attack from the Cretans who never gave up once their island was captured. This mindset was a difficult barrier for the Germans to overcome. The Cretans’ courage was even evident at their executions. Germans who were posted on the island reported seeing the courage in the Cretans’ eyes when they were being executed. This showed the determination of the Cretans, who may have lost the physical aspect of the war with the Germans, but never the mental battle. On June 9, 1942, the Cretan resistance planned an attack on the German-captured airfield of Kastelli and succeeded. During the night, the Cretans dispersed fuel all over the airplanes, and at one point lit them and ran back to their safe observation point. The Cretans destroyed 21 aircraft and burned more than 100,000 liters of aviation fuel in that one night. This surprise attack on the German’s military resources not only affected the Germans on the island of Crete but throughout Europe because they had to send airplanes and fuel into Crete that could have been used in other regions in Europe and possibly expand their reign. Due to the attack, the Cretans dented the Germans’ war supplies and destroyed costly weaponry.

Μάχη τής Κρήτης είχε αρχίσει ουσιαστικά απο τις 14 Μαίου μέ σφοδρό βομβαρδισμό στρατιωτικών στόχων, οπως τα αεροδρόμια Μάλεμε, Ρεθύμνου και Ηρακλείου, τα λιμάνια Σούδας και Ηρακλείου καθώς και οι μεγάλες πόλεις τής Κρήτης. Η Γερμανική αεροπορία πέτυχε να απομονώσει το Νησί απο την θάλασσα και να δημιουργήσει σοβαρό πρόβλημα στον ανεφοδιασμό τών συμμαχικών δυνάμεων που βρισκόταν στην Κρήτη για να βοηθήσουν στην υπεράσπισή της. Βρετανικά πλοία πλησιάζαν στή Κρήτη μόνο κατά τις μεσονύχτιες ωρες για εκφόρτωση και έφευγαν αμέσως. Οκτώ από αυτά βυθήστηκαν ή επαθαν σοβαρές βλάβες απο τις αεροπορικές επιθέσεις. Δύο ώρες αργότερα αρχίζει η πτώσης των αλεξιπτωτιστών, αφού στο μεταξύ ειχε αχρηστευθεί ολοκληρη η αεροπορική άμυνα των περιοχών Μάλεμε, Χανίων και Σούδας. Την ιδια μέρα αλεξιπτωτιστές πέφτουν στο Γαλατά, Αλικιανό, Περιβόλια, Αγιά, Βαθύπετρο, Βατόλακκο, Μουρνιές, Κολυμπάρι. Η μάχη εχει ηδη κριθεί. Τα βλέμματα τών Βρετανών στρέφονται πρός το Λυβικό, πού ευνοεί τη φυγή τους. Αν και η μάχη στά Χανιά ειχε αρχίσει απο το πρωί, η πτώση των αλεξιπτωστών στο Ρέθυμνο γίνετε το απόγευμα τής ιδιας μέρας. Οπως και στά Χανια και εδώ η κατάσταση ειναι τραγική. Αλεξιπτωτιστές σκοτώνοντε η αιχμαλωτίζοντε, αεροπλάνα καταρίπτοντε. Το Γερμανικό επιτελείο στην Αθήνα δεν εχει πληροφορηθεί το μέγεθος τής καταστροφής λογω των ζημιών στα τηλεπικοινωνιακά μέσα επαφής. Ταυτόχρονα με τις επιθέσεις στα Χανιά και Ρέθυμνο, το πρωι τής 20ης

Ο αιφνιδιασμός που περίμενε το Γερμανικό επιτελείο δεν πέτυχε στον αναμενόμενο βαθμό. Οι απώλειες από κάθε πλευρά ειναι τεράστιες. Οι βομβαρδισμοί, οι μάχες, οι καταστροφές και ο θάνατος συνεχίζοντε για τίς επόμενες μέρες σέ ολη τή Κρήτη και γίνονται ολο και πιό αγριοι. Οι πόλεις φλέγοντε, χωριά ολόκληρα παραδίνονται στις φωτιές, κάτοικοι ανεξαρτήτου ηλικίας εκτελούντε εν ψυχρώ, πτώματα παντού. Την 6η μέρα τα Βρετανικά στρατεύματα αρχίζουν να υποχωρούν. Οι Ελληνικές δυνάμεις υποφέρουν απο ελλειψη πυρομαχικών και τροφίμων, το ιδιο και οι Γερμανικές. Οι Κρητικοι εγκαταλείπουν τις πόλεις, τα χωριά και τα σπίτια τους και γίνοντε αντάρτες. Μόλις πέφτει η νυχτα βγαινουν απο τις κρυψώνες τους πλησίαζουν τα Γερμανικά φυλάκια, φυτεύουν νάρκες και σπύρουν το θάνατο στό Γερμανικό στρατό. Σιγά σιγά ολη η Κρήτη αναγκάζεται παρ ολη την γενναία αντίστασή της, να υποχωρήσει στην δύναμη τού κατακτητή. Τεράστιες οι απώλειες σε ανθρώπινο δυναμικό, οπλα και πυρομαχικά αλλα προ πάντων εντεκα ημέρες καθυστέρηση στα σχέδια τού Χίτλερ με αποτέλεσμα να φθάσει ο χειμώνας και οπως ειναι γνωστό να επιφέρει την γνωστη τροπή του πολέμου και να συμβάλει στην διάλυση τής Ναζιστικής αυτοκρατορίας. Αξιωσημείωτο το θάρρος των Κρητικών ακόμη και την ώρα τής εκτέλεσης τους, ειπαν οι ιδιοι οι Γερμανοι εκτελεστές αργότερα, κατι που έδειχνε την αποφασιστικότητα και τήν γενναιότητά τους. Dear Fellow Cretans, It has been almost two years since I became the President of the Pancretan Youth of America. It has been one of the greatest experiences of my life and one that I will definitely remember forever. The youth board has worked closely as a team throughout the two-year term to try and put together projects, old and new, that support and keep our Cretan traditions alive. Working as a team on the PYA board is the Chris V. key to a successful term. It is important that Marangoudakis everyone pulls their own weight in order for PYA President goals to be accomplished. George Liodakis Mr. George Liodakis is the current District 5 Governor from Salt Lake City, Utah. George came to the United States from Greece in 1989 and finished college in 1994. George and his wife Helen raised two sons, Manoli and Niko. George started his career working in the Ford automotive industry and then transitioned into real estate. His real estate investments were critical in getting him to where he is today. He would encourage all the youth to look into real estate as an option as they plan for, and invest in, their futures. Indeed, real estate investment can be the best 401k plan and can help provide for early retirement. George has also been heavily involved in the PAA on a local and national level. George first joined the Minos Chapter of Salt Lake City in 2000 and was elected vice president from 2002-2004 and president from 2004-2008. During his tenure as president, the Minos chapter purchased a Kritiko Spiti – the first Kritiko Spiti in Utah. George, with the help of the treasurer, Ted Makris, and others, were instrumental in making that dream a reality. George became involved in the PAA on a national level in 2005 when he was elected West Coast Youth Supervisor until 2009. As a youth supervisor, George enjoyed meeting, advising and assisting youth from across the United States. In 2011, George was elected District 5 Governor and is honored to serve in that capacity today.

PYA Board Candidates KATERINA MAKRIDAKIS
My name is Katerina Makridakis, and it is with great pleasure and enthusiasm that I announce my candidacy for the position of PYA president. I will be graduating from Northern Illinois University with a degree in computer science and a degree in operations and information management this May. I became involved with my local chapter and dance group at a very young age, and my love and passion for our Cretan heritage has kept me highly active throughout the years. Beginning as a dancer, and later as a trustee on the Chicago youth board, I came to hold the position of KriKri editor on the national board a few years ago and president of the Chicago youth. I proudly hold these positions today and put forth my best effort to go above and beyond what my fellow members expect of me. In addition to fulfilling these duties and roles, I also make it a point to involve myself in issues relevant to the well-being of our organization, such as constitution revisions and the Litsa funds. My idea for those funds was adopted, turning them into a $16,000 PYA philanthropic account, there for the purpose of assisting youth members in similar situations. Also, using my computer science background, I am working on creating a mobile phone app for the PYA! This is an exciting project that will help us stay connected and provide a means for us to have a little fun! It is not my ongoing involvement or strong drive toward academic success that I feel qualify me the most to become your president. First and foremost, before prior experience, before intelligence and before leadership skills, comes passion. Passion for our organization’s purpose, and passion for what it means to be Cretan. This passion transforms into dedication, and it is this relentless dedication that leads a president to take the best steps forward for the betterment of the organization. It is in my love for our Cretan roots and my respect for the PYA’s purpose that I have found this dedication. I would be honored if you gave me the opportunity to use it in the role of PYA president.
MARY PAPADAKIS
Hi, my name is Mary Papadakis from the Minotavros Youth Group in Salt Lake City, Utah, and I am excited to announce that I will be running for president of the PYA. I am a junior studying business management at Westminster College and will be getting my bachelor’s degree next spring. I also plan on going for my MBA in the next few years. Ever since I was young I have been involved in the syllogo. I started dancing when I was five years old and immediately fell in love. Everyone around me shared a passion for our Cretan culture. Since then I always wanted to share my passion with fellow Cretans. Locally, I was 16 when I first became a dance instructor for our intermediate group and hold that position still. When I was 17, I was elected Minotavros secretary and held that position for two years. After that, I was voted Minotavros president and currently hold that position. In that position my chapter has hosted a national District V Conference and a national Youth Conference. Nationally, I was appointed the Special Events Chair on the PYA board to finish the remainder of this current term. I am also the chairperson for two committees for the PAA National Convention to be held in Salt Lake City, Utah, in 2015. Aside from that, I have also taught Greek School for three years with our church program and now teach privately. As I was growing up I always looked up to the PYA officers. I listened to them at various meetings and admired them because they truly cared about this organization. Now that I am older I understand why they cared so much. It was because they wanted to preserve our culture and uphold our traditions in order to not forget our rizes. Now I want to continue that tradition for the generations to come.

My name is Christos Markakis; I’m currently 23 years old and I am a PYA member through the Detroit Youth Chapter “Levendoyenna.” I have just finished my university degree in English literature, and I am currently working at a Canadian Bank as a business systems analyst. I have been involved in the Cretan chapter of Toronto “Knossos” and of the Cretan Chapter of Detroit “Pseloretes” ever since I was a kid. I have been dancing in the Toronto dance group for nearly 20 years; I have also been dancing with the Detroit group for the past 6+ years and have been participating in the Ohio dance workshops for 10. It wasn’t until the Detroit Winter Youth Conference in 2011 that I was introduced to the PYA. It was at that conference that I fell head over heels in love with this great association, and I have been a dedicated member ever since. I have served as your cultural chair on the PYA board for almost a year, and before that I served on the temporary Minoan Village Investment Committee. These experiences have taught me that I want to contribute to the PYA even more than I currently have. I want to use my knowledge from these experiences (and those from my education and career) to help the PYA pursue any endeavors we yearn to grasp. It is because of this that I would like to announce my intention of running to be your PYA East Coast vice president for the upcoming term.

YIANNI DETORAKIS My name is Yianni Detorakis. I was born in Akron, Ohio. My dad’s parents came to Akron from the village of Gouves, near Iraklio, Crete. I play both the lyra and laouto. I received my first lyra as a gift from my yiayia when I was seven years old and immediately started trying to teach myself to play. Jason Nicolacakis taught me to play “Pote tha kamei xasteria,” and from there I taught myself how to play other songs from listening to Psarantonis CDs. I got my first laouto in August 2012. Before that, I taught myself how to play Cretan songs on guitar, so the transition to laouto was very easy for me. The most influential musicians for me are Psarantonis, Psarogiorgis, Nikos Xylouris, Thanasis Skordalos and Kostas Moundakis. Email: ydetorakis91093@gmail.com

JASON NICOLACAKIS When I was 20 years old, I asked family friend and Cretan lyrari Alekos Polychronakis to bring a lyra during an upcoming visit to perform in Akron. Polychronakis brought it, tuned it, handed it to me and then informed me that I need to learn the rest on my own. From then on, I used cassettes and CDs to teach myself to play the lyra. Currently, I am a member of the Akron chapter, but I was born in Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio. My Cretan lineage is on my father’s side, who is from Chania and the villages of Kamisiana and Neriana in western Crete. Today, I live with my family in the Akron area. Master lyrarithes that have influenced my style of music include Nikos Xylouris, Thanasis Skordalos and Kostas Moundakis. I also enjoy contemporary musicians Vasilis Skoulas, Manolis Alexakis and Alexandros Papadakis. Though I play primarily for my own enjoyment, I have also performed at a couple of weddings, baptisms and chapter events with whoever was available to accompany on the laouto. Christos Semanderes As long as I can remember, I have been exposed to Cretan music, lifestyle and traditions. One advantage of being first-generation American in your family is that the values and traditions of your ancestral heritage are still fresh. My father always made it a point to keep us connected to Crete by sending us there every summer. I never thought of picking up a musical instrument until my brother began dabbling on the lyra. As I began to get more involved and connected with the PYA, I learned to love Cretan music even more. It wasn’t until one summer in the DIAS program in Crete that I decided to take some lessons for laouto. I thought, “What have I got to lose?” By the end of that summer, I was mediocre at best, but I had developed a strong will to pursue the laouto because I witnessed the amazing sounds the professionals produced from this piece of wood. When I picked up the laouto to play or listened to a piece, I envisioned myself on stage being the center of the music and livelihood. Through this sheer motivation, I decided to pick up the laouto everyday, whether it was for five minutes or five hours. Returning to Crete each summer and being involved in the PYA nourished my motivation to its utmost. As I felt more comfortable with the instrument, I began to evolve into the player I am today. NIKOLI SEMANDERES I have been exposed to Cretan song, dance and culture since a very young age. At the age of 12, I held a lyra for the first time. It belonged to Andonis Moshonas, who was just learning at the time, and he showed me how to hold it properly and press the strings to play notes. The following summer I was in Crete again, and I spent some time with the Hatzis brothers at a “filoxenia” program. They sparked my interest in Cretan music, which, up until then, I viewed mostly as something to dance to. It wasn’t until a few months later, however, when I knew I wanted to play lyra. I was with my parents at “Nono” Savakis’ house and had become quite bored when I noticed a lyra laying on a shelf in his living room. I picked it up and played around with it for a little, and I found that I was able to play a couple basic songs. I immediately told my father I wanted a lyra, and when we were in Crete again, he bought me one. Since then, I have played at a number of small baptisms, weddings and even a couple glentia! But mostly I enjoy playing off stage with a good parea (kai kalo krasi!!). I encourage everyone to try and pick up an instrument, and, if anyone ever asks me, I will always take a few minutes to show them how to hold a lyra. Email: Nikoli5052@gmail.com

ARKADI-MALEME DANCE TROUPES OF PITTSBURGH, PENNSYLVANIA Arkadi-Maleme’s dance group began to form in the early 1990s under the direction of the then-newcomer to Pittsburgh, Helene Kapelonis Semanderes. Com-
ing from a Cretan dance background in New York City (a former member of the Minos and Omonoia dance troupes), Helene gathered a handful of youth and began instruction at the old locale of All Saints Greek Orthodox Church in Canonsburg, Pa. Since then, dance members have increased to more than 30, prompting a creation of three troupes determined by age level and skill. In the late 1990s, the chapter approved a sizeable budget for the purchase of dance costumes from Crete; the group now had costumes they could be proud of! Then, thanks to the great generosity Arkadi - Maleme dance troupe.

of George Varouh (the PAA’s Grand Benefactor), the youth were given the opportunity to attend and perform at PAA conventions and youth conferences, including the 1999 convention in Crete. The dance groups also travelled to chapters outside the district and performed at the Epiphany celebrations in Tarpon Springs, Fla. Each year, thanks to the effort of chapter member Mary Migias, the Arkadi-Maleme dance troupes are invited to Wheeling Jesuit University’s (West Virginia) Culture Fest to perform Cretan dances. And each year, the Cretan dance groups are
the highlight of this international food and entertainment festival. Our annual dance in 2010 was dedicated to honoring two decades of Arkadi-Maleme dancers. A total of 78 dancers and instructors (past and present) were honored with personalized engraved medals. Other than Helene Semanderes (helene@odysseygroup.net), who still directs and oversees the dance groups of Arkadi-Maleme, former instructors include Gregory Pappas, Kalliope Roumbakis Tsipras and Sophia Williard Alfaras, as well as current instructors Anthony Adelianakis and Christianna Sampson, assisted by Cleopatra Adelianakis and Erene Semanderes. —HELENE SEMANDERES

Honoring two decades of Arkadi-Maleme dancers and instructors.
CRETAN ASSOCIATION OF AKRON, OHIO DANCE GROUPS The Cretan Association of Akron, Ohio, has had a dance troupe consistently since 1995. Currently the chapter has two active troupes. The younger group has six active dancers (three boys and three girls), who have been performing from three to six years. The older group has eight active dancers (five boys and three girls), who have been performing six to 12 years. At times, members of both troupes perform together. The Akron dance troupes typically perform at the PAA District 3 conferences in May and at the annual Annunciation Akron Greek Orthodox Church festival. At times, they will perform at Cretan dances in Cleveland, Canton, Pittsburgh and other surrounding District 3 chapter dances. The groups have also performed at the area ethnic festival of other Orthodox churches, including the Russian and Romanian Orthodox Churches. Over time, we intend to seek out even more opportunities to perform; for example, at Akron-area international festivals and at area cultural diversity events, to gain more experience and also spread our Cretan culture. During the upcoming PAA National Convention this summer, as the hosting chapter, our plan is to have our younger dancers perform at Welcome Night and then have our older dancers follow. Other groups from the PAA will also perform during the week of the convention.
Over the years, the following people have served as dance instructors for the Akron troupes: Michael Detorakis, Jason Nicolacakis, Rise Poleondakis and Toula Elefter, with help from the older dancers to assist the younger ones. The current dance instructors are Jason Nicolacakis (jnicolacakis@teamhfa.com) and Michael Detorakis (iraklio@aol.com), who work with both the younger and older dancers. K

ένθος στις 30 Απριλίου στην Κρήτη, σε όλο τον Ελληνισμό αλλά και στον Ορθόδοξο κόσμο σκόρπισε η απώλεια του γέροντα Ειρηναίου ο οποίος εκοιμήθη σε ηλικιά 102 ετών. Διετέλεσε επί σειρά ετών Μητροπολίτης Κισάμου και Σελίνου. Μια από τις μεγαλύτερες μορφές της σύγχρονης Ορθδοξίας πίσω του αφήνει λαμπρό έργο και αναμνήσεις από μία ζωή πρότυπο για κάθε ιεράρχη. Έιναι προσωπικότητα που άφησε στο πέρασμά της ανεξίτηλα τα ίχνη της και άνοιξε δρόμους και ορίζοντες προφέροντας τεράστιες υπηρεσίες στην Εκκλησία, την κοινωνία, τον απλό άνθρωπο, τους νέους, τους ηλικιωμένους και τις γυναίκες. Γεννημένος οραματιστής και πραγματοποιός, αξιώθηκε να δώσει στην Εκκλησία κορυφαία κοινωνική διάσταση. Έφερε την Εκκλησία κοντά στον λαό με έργα μεγάλης κοινωνικής και εθνικής σημασίας, έργα που σχετίζονταν με την ανάπτυξη και την πνευματική ανάταση. Απέδειξε ότι ένας ιεράρχης μπορεί να εμπνεύσει ένα ολόκληρο λαό και προ παντός να εμπνεύσει το πλήρωμα της Εκκλησίας και να το οδηγήσει σε έργα πρακτικά, σε έργα που ο σύγχρονος άνθρωπος έχει μεγάλη ανάγκη. Ό Μητροπολίτης Ειρηναίος Γ. Γαλανάκης γεννήθηκε στο Νεροχώρι Άποκορώνου, τό 1911 και έλαβε τό όνομα Μιχαήλ. Μετά τό Δημοτικό Σχολείο, φοίτησε στο Ίεροδιδασκαλείο Αγίας Τριάδας Ακρωτηρίου και κατά τά έτη 1933-37 σπούδασε στη Θεολογική Σχολή του Πανεπιστημίου Αθηνών. Διορίζεται, στη συνέχεια, καθηγητής και υπηρετεί σέ διάφορα Γυμνάσια του Ν. Χανίων. Το 1943, απο αφορμή επαναστατικού κηρύγματός του στον μητροπολιτικό ναό 26

των Χανίων τα Εισόδια της Θεοτόκου, συλλαμβάνεται άπο τις γερμανικές αρχές Κατοχής. Διασώζεται από εκτέλεση χάρις στη δυναμική επέμβαση του Επισκόπου Κυδωνίας Αποκορώνου Αγαθαγγέλου Ξηρουχάκη. Τό 1946 χειροτονείται Διάκονος και λαβαίνει τό όνομα Ειρηναίος. Στη συνέχεια γίνεται Πρεσβύτερος και τοποθετείται στην Υποδιεύθυνση της Εκκλησιαστικής Σχολής Κρήτης Ι. Μ. “Αγ. Τριάδος Χανίων” όπου διδάσκει έως το 1957. Ενδιάμεσα λαβαίνει υποτροφία για τό Πανεπιστήμιο των Παρισίων και της Λίλλης, όπου παρακολουθεί μαθήματα Πρακτικής Θεολογίας, Κοινωνιολογίας και Παιδαγωγικής. Το 1957, εκλέγεται Επίσκοπος Κισάμου - Σελίνου και εγκαθίσταται στο Καστέλι Κισάμου. Χάρη στη δυναμική, το ήθος, το κύρος και την προσωπικότητα του, οι επαρχίες της Επισκοπής σύντομα αναβαθμίστηκαν. Ιδρύει πνευματικά και κοινωφελή Ιδρύματα, ώστε ή άνθιση καί η αλλαγή του προσώπου των επαρχιών αυτών να συντελεσθεί ταχύτατα και μοναδικά! Metropolitan Irinaios of Kisamos and Selinon Dies STAVROS ANTONAKAKIS, PAA 2nd VICE PRESIDENT
F
ormer Metropolitan of Kisamos and Selinon Mr. Irinaios Galanakis fell asleep on April 30, at the age of 102. He studied at the Seminary of Crete (1927-1931) and at the Theological Faculty of the University of Athens (1932-1937). He attended post-graduate courses on theology and sociology at the Catholic University of Lille in Paris and served as a layman professor of theology in various schools in the prefecture of Chania (1938-1945). In 1946, he was ordained deacon and then priest, with the title of Archimandrite, at the Holy Trinity Monastery in Akrotiri and was appointed Deputy Director of the Ecclesiastical School of Crete. From 1950 to 1952, he remained in France for broader studies. In December 1957, he was elected by the Holy Synod of the Church of Crete, Metropolitan of Kisamos and Selinon. A visionary during his episcopate through his bold actions, the following are some of the institutions he founded: The Orthodox Academy of Crete in Kolymbari, the new Cathedral of Kastelli, the Annousakeio Nursing Home and Infirmary in Kastelli, School for the Deaf and Dumb, the Cultural Centres of Kisamos, and the monasteries of Chrisoskalitissa and Parthenon in Kisamos. In 1971 he was elected by the Holy Synod of the Ecumenical Patriarchate, Metropolitan of the newly established Greek Orthodox Metropolis of Germany. During his episcopate there (1971-1981), the Greek Orthodox Metropolis of Germany was recognized as the third official Church in the country (year 1974), the Cathedral and the Metropolitan Hall in Bonn were built, including many new churches in major citys of Germany. he first District 7 Governor, Mr. Manuel Kastrenakes of Clearwater, Fla., once said: “For many years there were only six districts in the Dianne MaragoudakisPAA. The first four were in the Sophinos northeast and mid-eastern District 7 Governor part of the United States; the dionisia@bellsouth.net other two were in the west. Since the mid-1950s, the PAA had one chapter sitting alone in Miami. They were told they belonged to District 2, but being so far apart they had very little connection with District 2. Early in 1978, a new chapter was born in Clearwater. I was honored to be the first president. After discussing the possibility of forming a new district, the Miami chapter gave me their blessings to take my idea to the floor of the 1978 Salt Lake City PAA National Convention. Everyone was for the proposal, and District 7 was born. I am thankful to God that he gave me the light to plant the first seed in our district, and I am very proud of all the governors who came after me and have done an outstanding job. District 7 now is one of the best in our beloved PAA.” Today District 7 is comprised of the following states: Florida, Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Oklahoma, Puerto Rico, the Bahamas and Arkansas. These dance groups are very proud to perform at Cretan events, church festivals, conventions and other community programs. Currently there are two youth dance groups: Drosoulites from the KPHTH Chapter of Clearwater, Fla., and Ta Kamaria Tis Samarias from the Samaria Chapter of Atlanta. The District 7 board members who I enjoy working with are: First Lieutenant Governor James Boutzoukas, Second Lieutenant Governor John Doulgerakis, Treasurer Mia Boutzoukas, Secretary Eleftheria Winters, and Youth Advisor Sofia Karachalios. These members help cultivate and maintain the rich traditions of Crete. The following chapter presidents continue to take great pride in their membership and all members continue to strive for the best in their youth in promoting the Cretan culture and heritage:

Two chapters in the district have hosted a PAA National Convention: the Cretan American Association of Miami and the KPHTH (Crete) Chapter of the PAA, Clearwater, Fla., in 1984 and 2011. In 1981 the PAA Youth Convention took place. As a member of the Cretan Association of West Palm Beach - Cretan Voice since the mid-1980s, I have been serving as recording secretary for more than 20 years. Currently I am also serving as district governor. It is my responsibility to be informed from the PAA national level and communicating important issues to all nine chapters in the district. Atlanta’s Cretan Community Viable and Vibrant after a Slow Start

T
he first recorded Greek immigrant to arrive in Atlanta was Alexander Carolee from Argos, who came in 1890. He was followed over the next decade by others from the same region of Greece. According to the 1900 United States Census, there were 44 Greek-born persons living in Atlanta. Eventually, this small group of immigrants, joined by a steady flow of fellow Greeks, was large enough in 1905 to start the Greek Orthodox Church of the Annunciation, which would be the hub of Atlanta’s Greek community for the balance of the 20th Century. While most of these immigrants were from the Peloponnese, church records document that one of the earliest leaders was a Cretan named Demetrios Psaroudakis, who served as parish president in 1919. Those same records reveal that another Cretan, Sava Spanoudakis from Sitia, had moved to Atlanta in the mid 1920s. Like other young Greek immigrants, Sava eventually returned to Crete, 32

married and returned to Atlanta with his bride, Efthimia. Interestingly, the general Greek community had started referring to him as the man from Crete (Κρήτη) and, over time, this reference was formalized and legally became “Creety.” For more than four decades, Mr. Creety, his wife and their two children were the Cretan microcosm within Atlanta’s Greek-American community. The years immediately after the Second World War saw several newly arrived Greek immigrants with the distinctive “akis” ending to their surnames, but they considered themselves as hailing from Athens rather than acknowledging their ancestral Cretan roots. At the same time, other Greek Americans, proud of their Cretan heritage, started arriving in Atlanta from other American cities. Most notably, Anna Pappas (Pappadakis) was a young violinist who moved from Illinois in the mid-1950s to play with the Atlanta Symphony and shortly was followed by

from Rethymnon. Together, the two talked about the possibility of starting a PAA chapter in Atlanta. In the course of their conversations, they realized there were more questions than answers: Were there enough people of Cretan descent to make a chapter feasible? Even if the numbers were there, would they have an interest in forming a club? What would make a “Cretan club” different (and therefore relevant) from the many Hellenic organizations that were wellestablished in Atlanta (for example, AHEPA, which began in Atlanta decades before)? And, how would they go about creating a PAA chapter? These and many other valid questions were raised since Atlanta did not have a rich Cretan history like the Greek enclaves in Chicago, Denver, Detroit, New York, Pittsburgh, Salt Lake City and other immigrant-centric cities of the north and west. Either by chance or providence, a small group of these newly arrived Kritiki came together to form the nucleus of what would become the Samaria chapter of the Pancretan Association. The year was 2002, and individuals from Atlanta, unconnected with each other, yet needing to satisfy the yearning each of them had for authentic Cretan culture, made their way to a Cretan dinner-dance held by the relatively new PAA chapter in Charlotte, N.C., a four-hour drive from Atlanta. There, Zervos and his wife Demetra recognized several people from Atlanta who were also attending that event. Among

her Rethymnon-born parents. A few years later, some such as Tony Pappadakis, the current treasurer of Atlanta’s PAA chapter, moved to Atlanta from Savannah, Ga., where there was an established Cretan community. After that, others with a Cretan lineage arrived, so Atlanta’s Greek American community began to include those with last names like Halkos (Halkiadakis), Galifianakis and Stefanis (Xanthoudakis). Atlanta’s Cretan community was starting to take shape but not quite enough for a PAA chapter. This status remained until the days of Atlanta’s modern boom of the 1970s through the 1990s. These exciting times saw the expansion of Atlanta’s Greek American community around three other Greek Orthodox parishes beyond Atlanta’s original cathedral. These newcomers pushed the Greek American population to the suburban towns of Marietta, Cummings and Peachtree City, each with their own Greek Orthodox parish. At the same time, many of the newly arrived Greek Americans broke Atlanta’s strong mainland bias, as a healthy contingency of newcomers had Cretan roots. One of those newcomers, Mike Zervos, who had a rich Cretan and PAA legacy from his hometown of Salt Lake City, had a chance conversation with Fr. George Tsahakis, the newly arrived chancellor of the Atlanta Metropolis, whose Cretan father was

them were native born Cretan John Doulgerakis and his wife Beth and Costa Panos and his CretanAmerican wife Vicky. Inspired by his recent conversation with Fr. George and encouraged by his fellow Cretans attending the Charlotte dance, Zervos reached out to John Kokolakis, the then governor of District 7. He assisted Zervos, Doulgerakis and others to create a PAA chapter in Atlanta. On June 22, 2003, following a blessing by the clergy in the sanctuary of the Atlanta Cathedral, a small group of the soon-to-be Samaria members met with Kokolakis, national President Stavros Semanderes and Emmanuel Velivasakis to learn how to be recognized as a PAA chapter. Following the directions from these PAA leaders, that initial group solicited others to become members, and the Samaria chapter
of the PAA held its first official “meeting” a few weeks later. Displaying true Cretan grit, they planned their chapter’s first goal: to have their own Kritiko Glendi. Without a treasury, members pledged personal funds to cover the costs of the dinner dance. They booked musicians from Crete and in January 2003 held what was to become the annual Κρητικό Γλέντι in Atlanta. Today, 10 years later, this event is anticipated by the entire Atlanta community as a way to celebrate Cretan culture in the South! In its short 10-year-history, Samaria has proven to be a viable and vibrant chapter of the PAA. It has hosted two district conventions; each year it has sponsored a memorial service to honor the fallen during the Battle of Crete; and it has held programs to highlight Cretan authors and Cretan film. It is with great sadness that I inform you of the death of Nick Andrew Sfouggatakis of Clearwater, Fla., at the age of 66, following complications from a congenital heart disease. Nick was an interesting and opinionated person, and those who met him never forgot Nick Andrew Sfouggatakis him. He served the Pancretan Association of America in many national positions, including third vice president, investments and fundraising chair, Venizelion scholarship chair, and most notably the first PEF (Pancretan Endowment Fund) chair for the University of Crete, funding the University press. He was a member of the Omonoia chapter and the KPHTH chapter in Clearwater, Fla. In his personal life, he was a CPA, a consultant, an accomplished author, professor and investor. Nick was born on March 22, 1947, and died exactly 66 years later on his birthday on March 22, 2013. He is survived by his wife, Maro and brother, George. May his memory be eternal. Η κηδεία καί ό ενταφιασμός έγιναν στήν γεννέτηρά του, τήν Ανώπολη Σφακίων. CONGRATULATIONS Congratulations to Nektarios Ritzakis, who obtained his master’s of science in bioengineering from Northeastern University. The son of Christos and Virginia Ritzakis of Boston, formerly of Salt Lake City, Nektarios completed his year-long thesis extending from his undergraduate research using a touch-freezing apparatus. His innovative research has also enabled him to file a provisional patent application for the methods and results of his thesis. MEETING Thirty members attended the first meeting of the new year on Jan. 27. We shared a Sunday brunch at Executive Caterers. After cutting Vasilopita for everyone, we were pleased to welcome our newest member, Georgia Matthews. We look forward to her active participation. U.S. EDUCATION Marina Stavrakantonakis, niece of members Frances Pantelides and Maria Bourlas, is in the U.S. studying. She earned her first master’s degree from Ohio State University and is now working on her second master’s in public policy at the University of Chicago. Marina plans to go on to earn her doctorate in public policy. It was a pleasure to meet Marina at a recent Knossos Chapter meeting. We wish her continued success in her studies. IN MEMORY OF HARRY LAGGERIS Harry Laggeris was our Knossos chapter past president and a member for more than 50 years. In 1948, Harry married a true, 100% Cretan, Irene Vutetakis, and together they vigorously supported our Cretan Club and its charitable activities. They chaired Harry and Irene Laggeris dinner/raffle fundraisers, annual Christmas parties, picnics and many club meetings. Harry enjoyed these activities, but it was the friendship and fellowship of fellow members he deeply appreciated. Even though he was a Cretan by marriage, he was warmly welcomed by the entire Cretan community. Harry loved his family, his community and his church. A life-long member of St. Haralambos Greek Orthodox Church in Canton, he was active in the Men’s Club, Silver Liners and AHEPA. He served the Navy Air Force and Reserves for 36 years. Harry taught graphic arts at Akron Hower High School for 30 years and owned Towne Printing Company for 52 years. Harry and Irene were married 65 years. They have three daughters, three sons, and six grandchildren. Harry passed on Jan. 12. He leaves us a legacy of integrity, strength, generosity and joy. Harry remains in our hearts. TROUPE PERFORMANCE On April 7, a Greek Journey in the Windy City was held at Chicago’s Navy Pier. The event was filled with Greek food and music. We were very proud of our Cretan Dance group as they were one of the performances for this event. As always, their performance was spectacular and had everyone on their feet. We distributed literature to the Hartford church community describing the significant accomplishments of this Greek national hero, described as the “Father of the Greek Republic,” and one of the greatest statesmen of Europe. Afterward our chapter gathered for a luncheon at Elaine’s restaurant in nearby Wethersfield for a chance to socialize with our fellow Cretans. We were most honored to have with us our District Governor, Demitris Hatzis, and his family, as well as our board members: Andonis Aretakis, president; Rose Bonatsakis Vouthounes vice-president; Libby Artas (Aretakis) Sideriadis, treasurer; Christina (Tina) Meggie (Megalonakis) Smith, secretary; and Peter (Megalonakis) Smith, membership. We were also happy to see Elaine Bonatsakis Tsakiris, who was visiting from Greece. We listened to Cretan music and had a chance to hear the colorful story of Andoni Aretakis’ ancestors and their “coming to America” adventures. Tony also brought a beautiful picture of Venizelos, which has been in his family for generations. It was a wonderful opportunity to reconnect with our Cretan friends! ΑΙΩΝΙΑ ΤΟΥΣ ΟΙ ΜΝΗΜΗ
Στις 12 Φεβρουαρίου, 2013, απεβίωσε το αγαπητό μέλος του συλλόγου μας, Νίκος Παπαδάκης. Μια πολύ λυπηρή μέρα για την οικογένεια Παπαδάκη. O Νίκος γεννήθηκε στην Κρήτη και ήρθε στην Αμερική, Brooklyn N.Y., από όπου μετά μετακόμισε στο N.J. Υπήρξε θερμός υποστηριχτής και συμπαραστάτης του συλλόγου μας. Επίσης διατέλεσε και ψάλτης στην εκκλησία η Κοίμησης της Θεοτόκου στο Holmdel του New Jersey. Εκ μέρους του συλλόγου μας, το συμβούλιο στέλνει θερμά συλλυπητήρια στην σύζυγο του, κ. Αντωνία Παπαδάκη το γένος Πρωτοπαπαδάκη, τα παιδιά του, Ευτύχη και Ζαχαρία, Παπαδάκη, όπως και σε όλους τους συγγενείς του. Ο Θεός να του συγχωρέσει, και αιωνία η μνήμη του. CONDOLENCES March 15 was a very sad day for the Manioudakis family when Anna Manioudakis passed away to the eternal life. The Manioudakis family is one of the founding member families of our chapter, and Anna was a devout communicant of our church in Piscataway and always ready to participate in any undertaking necessary for our church. She was also an active member of the Philoptochos Society of our

community. Anna is survived by her husband Emmanuel and her two sons Nicholas and George. Our chapter extends our deepest sympathy and condolences to the Manioudakis family, and may Anna’s memory be eternal. March 20 was a very sad day for the Blazakis family when Mary Blazakis passed away to the eternal life. Mary was a lifelong active member of our church in Piscataway and always ready to participate in any undertaking necessary for our church. She was also an active member of the Philoptochos Society of our community and of the Daughters of Penelope. Mary is survived by her son John and her daughter Evangeline. Our chapter extends our deepest sympathy and condolences to the Blazakis family, and may Mary’s memory be eternal.

ΙΑΤΡΙΚΗ ΠΑΡΟΥΣΙΑΣΗ Ο σύλλογός μας συνεχίζοντας την προσπάθεια ενημέρωσης των μελών του και της παροικίας οργάνωσε στις 11 Φεβρουαρίου, στο Κρητικό Σπίτι, με την συνεργασία του «Hellenic Medical Society of Philadelphia», μια πολύ σπουδαία και μεγάλης σημασία ιατρική παρουσίαση, «Η Υγεία του Πνεύμονα». Η υψηλής στάθμης παρουσίαση έγινε από τους διακεκριμένους πνευμονολόγους ιατρούς καθηγητές, Dr. Denis Hajiliadis, associate professor of medicine και Dr. Anthony Lafranco, assistant professor of clinical medicine και οι δύο από το University of Pennsylvania. PERFORMANCES On Saturday, April 6, our dance groups performed at Wheeling Jesuit University’s Culture Fest in West Virginia. This annual event brings in hundreds of people to sample cultural presentations and cuisines of the world. The Arkadi-Maleme Pittsburgh troupes have been showcasing our Cretan culture at this nationality festival for more than 15 years. This year, the youngest members of the dance group got together several days before the event to make and bake koulourakia. The cookies were donated to the Greek food table and sampled by guests at the festival. The mothers of the dancers contributed foods and desserts for the Greek table as well. The groups performed a total of five Cretan dances that energized the crowd. Our chapter extends a big “thank you” to the dance instructors (Anthony Adelianakis, Christianna Sampson, Cleopatra Adelianakis, Erene Semanderes), the Cretan dancers, the members who contributed food for the event, and the organizing committee of Wheeling Jesuit University. EASTER It’s not a coincidence that Pascha always falls in the spring-time but rather a perfect plan of the Master for reminding us that like nature comes alive this time of the year so should our faith and souls, like nature springs new life everywhere so should we open our hearts and minds and embrace our faith. Spring is the time that most of us will take time to clean our homes and gardens. Hopefully the preparations for the resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ were pretty much the same: spring cleaning of our minds and souls. An understanding of our inner self and human existence in the trip of life. Condolences to the family of Antonia (Hamilakis) Fantakis, who passed away Friday, March 15, 2013. She was born on the Greek island of Crete to the late Menelaos and Eleni (Koutsourelis) Hamilakis. Antonia worked as a sewing Antonia (Hamilakis) Fantakis machine operator for many years for Gemini Inc. in Springfield. She was a member of
St. George Greek Orthodox Cathedral, the Philoptochos at St. George and the Cretan Ladies “Proodos.” Antonia was a very devoted wife, mother and grandmother. She led a very simple life because she valued family above all else. She was predeceased by her beloved husband of 35 years Nicholas Fantakis in 1993, the life-altering loss of her son Evangelos Fantakis in 2009, and her brothers Vasilis and Lefteris Hamilakis and sister Maria Stamatakis. Antonia is survived by her loving daughter Christine Dourountoudakis and her husband Costas of Ludlow, her daughterin-law Charlene Fantakis of Westfield, her five cherished grandchildren, Niko Fantakis, Ariana Fantakis, Kalista Fantakis, Dino Dourountoudakis and Maria Dourountoudakis and her fiancée Mike Matroni, her brother Aristedes Hamilakis in Greece, her sister Georgia Georgiakakis in Greece, her niece Christina Stebbins and her family, and sister-in-law Marika Hamilakis and her family.
